Before making the original Halloween into one of the most profitable independent films of all time, John Carpenter directed this riveting low-budget thriller from 1976, in which a nearly abandoned police station is held under siege by a heavily armed gang called Street Thunder. Inside the station, cut off from contact and isolated, cops and convicts who were headed for death row must now join forces or die. That's the basic plot, but it's what Carpenter does with it that's remarkable. Drawing specific inspiration from the classic Howard Hawks Western Rio Bravo (which included a similar siege on disadvantaged heroes), Carpenter used his simple setting for a tense, tightly constructed series of action sequences, emphasizing low-key character development and escalating tension. Few who've seen the film can forget the "ice cream cone" scene in which a young girl is caught up in the action by patronizing a seemingly harmless ice cream truck. It's here, and in other equally memorable scenes, that Carpenter demonstrates his singular knack for injecting terror into the mundane details of daily life, propelling this potent thriller to cult favorite status and long-standing critical acclaim. --Jeff Shannon
Description

Carpenter Turns The Corner.......2007-06-18
How many movies do you remember seeing back in a different lifetime that you thought were really cool only to check 'em out in the current day and find that they really were average at best? Don't worry...Assault on Precinct 13 is not one of those movies.
There's just something about movies made before the early 80s that just scream, "this-movie-was-made-a-long-time-ago." And Assault on Precinct 13 does too. 31 years is a long time, but after watching Assault on Precinct 13 again this past weekend for the first time since 1976, I was surprised to see how affective the movie still is.
This is one of the first R-rated movies that my dad took me to. So I chalked up the memorable impression that Assault on Precinct 13 made on me to...well...being an impressionable 15 year old kid that was just excited to being going to an R-rated film. Who knew that the reason was really that back in 1976 I was watching the movie that turned the corner for Director John Carpenter from B-movie director to one of the best Horror/Action/Sci-fi storytellers of all time?
The story is simple and the acting is pretty good. Some guy and his daughter have the unfortunate experience of crossing paths at the wrong time in the wrong place with a violent street gang. After a brutal exchange between family and gang, the guy retreats to Precinct 13 with the gang close behind, and the Assault ensues. (I'm not much into spoilers, so my vagueness is deliberate. I will say that the intense ice cream truck scene stayed in my mind for 31 years as if I'd seen it a day ago.)
The movie is presented in a nice widescreen aspect, but the audio is only stereo (which you won't even notice unless you have a Surround system). The tinny stereo sound was a constant reminder throughout that I was watching an "old" movie.
Overall, though, this classic cult film is worth a look...especially since Jean-François Richet's 2005 remake Assault on Precinct 13 (Widescreen Edition) was only fair at best.
Masterpiece!.......2007-03-24
A lot of social and political commentary relevant to todays culture. A lot of gray area amongst the characters. The 2 inmates were "heroes" when they had to be. Also, the element of police "overreaction" to gang members at the beginning which led to an assault on a police precinct. It's surprising you don't hear about precinct assaults in the news. You get enough disenchanted people together, much damage can be done. Their mentality is a lot like terrorists today with the "martyr" attitude towards their cause. This flick and Stallone's "Nighthawks" unfortunately depicted what the world has become today with enough disenchanted people in this world to make each and everyone of us vulnerable whether we are in a department store or on a lonely nature trail. I refuse to see the remake that was released. This movie is classic and everyone should see once with an open mind. The "Ice Cream" scene is also reality and was considered too graphic 30 years ago. Hear about needless shootings everyday here in Buffalo, can't imagine what major cities encounter.
Cool movie.......2006-09-19
This is one of my personal favorites. And after seeing the new version I wont say one is really better than the other. This one is much darker than its successor. The darker setting will actually send chills down your spine. The shoot outs are very graphic and intense. However this movie does send a frightening thought. What could happen really, if a motivated street gang as shown in this movie today, were able to get their hands on heavy armaments such as this. I seriously doubt it would be something pretty. Anyway, this is one of the best cop movies I ever seen and I recommend seeing this at least once. The newer version is worth a watch also.
disturbingly super!.......2006-08-25
this movie far exceeds its later edition. this edition is disturbing, but excellent. the violence, the gore, everything is heart-pounding.
Awesome.......2006-07-04
if you consider when it was done this movie has not aged that badly. It is a fantastic movie even if you did not take into account the shoestring budget it was made on. The tension is unbelievable as the police station is being attacked by the faceless gang. As many have written the motives are not entirely clear besides revenge against the police for executing gang members at the beginning, following which the remaining gang members go on a killing spree. The remake was unfortubnately a catastrophe but this remains to this day a classic. Also the comments by John Carpenter are great to listen to in retrospect.

GREAT ACTORS, GOOD PLOT, GOOD MOVIE!!.......2007-09-01
everything is good, ethan hawke, laurence fishburne, drea de matteo, ja rule, john leguizamo, the action, the suspense, the whole thing. the criminals, the bad guys, and the cops, the good guys, or are they? this gave me my action fill, good has to unite with the bad to make it through. i really recommend it. the only negative is why did ethans crush have to die?
Great Re-Make.......2007-08-26
Far better than the original Ethan Hawke and Laurence Fishburne are great in this bad cop movie.
Corey Cotta, Author of All of Yesterdays Tomorrows.
What a Surprize.......2007-07-29
Man,this movie caught me off guard.
This was very intertaining from the first scene to the last.
Plus the cast is really good.
Laurence Fishburne is terrific !
I saw this as a rental, now I will buy it.
Stay away from this one.......2007-03-09
The plot is just stupid: a crooked police department try to kill a criminal and an entire police precinct (one of their own) that guards said criminal.
And it get worse. Police tactics from SWAT entries to sniper shooting are so wrong. How about just walk in the precinct, dressed as police officers, and tale over. How about tossing the people inside a phone and talk to them. Save your money and time. Stay away.
HD DVD version is fantastic.......2007-01-31
This is one of the better movies to enjoy as HD DVD version. The picture quality is stunning. 80% of the movie plays at night or in dark environment. That's when you see the difference to the standard DVD: Where the DVD version was murky and impossible to detect any details in dark areas, the HD DVD shines. I was able to see wall structures in finest detail and things like that add to the true movie feeling. I whish there were more HD DVDs like this one.
The sound is good, too. Even though the disk makes no use of the new audio standards for HD DVD, it still rocks. To my ears, it was not better than the DVD version, though. The surround effects are well placed and the subwoofer had plenty to do.
Yeah, I know I only talked about the tech aspect in this review; but HD DVDs are still scarse and early adopters are frankly more interested if the picture and sound quality is good. Believe it or not: Even if this was a really bad movie (and it isn't), most owners of HD DVD players would still watch it just to test their precious high tech home movie theatre.
If you read the other reviews it's clear: The movie IS good. Thank god. Unfortunately, there are only a few really good movies on HD DVDs out there and this is one of them.

Carpenter Turns The Corner.......2007-06-18
First, let me suggest that if you are looking to purchase Assault on Precinct 13 that you go with the enhanced Special Edition Assault on Precinct 13 (Special Edition) instead of this one .
The Special Edition (in the link above) is presented in a nice widescreen aspect, but the audio is only stereo (which you won't even notice unless you have a Surround system). The tinny stereo sound was a constant reminder throughout that I was watching an "old" movie. The version in this edition is full screen, and has no extras.
Overall, though, this classic cult film is worth a look...especially since Jean-François Richet's 2005 remake Assault on Precinct 13 (Widescreen Edition) was only fair at best.
ASSAULT AND BATTERY.......2005-05-14
John Carpenter's cult classic is a fine example of this director's genius, that has been evidenced only strongly in two later movies: HALLOWEEN and his remake of THE THING. In this tense and brutal film, a soon to be shutdown police station is attacked by a bunch of ruthless gang members. Carpenter takes his time (using his hypnotic musical score) to set up the confrontation, with teasing bits of impending doom, the most noteable being the scene with the little girl and the ice cream man. That scene alone will blow your socks off. The movie's "stars" were unknowns at the time, and this lack of familiarity helps make them more convincing. Austin Stoker as the besieged lieutenant and Darwin Joston as convicted killer Napoleon Wilson have a credible chemistry, and Carpenter regulars Nancy Loomis and Charles Cyphers round out the cast. The movie is like Halloween in its shadowy depiction of the gang members and the violence is almost Western-like in its relentless brutality. I haven't seen the recent remake, but they'd be hard pressed to capture the stark ruthlessness of this well done thriller.
A Carpenter classic, but buyer beware.......2005-05-03
Two years before John Carpenter made a name for himself with the original Halloween, he put together this low budget classic in which desperate cops and prisoners must band together to withstand a siege. The original Assault on Precinct 13 mixed elements of Rio Bravo and Night of the Living Dead as a rather large gang wages a street war on a soon to be closed police station. Weaving an engaging character study with some incredibly intense action sequences, Assault on Precinct 13 still manages to pull out all the shocks today that it did in 1976, including the infamous ice cream truck scene which helps set the stage for police station siege. Forget about the recent watered down Hollywood remake; the original Assault on Precinct 13 remains one of the best low budget action films ever made, and one of the best films to come from the mind of visionary John Carpenter. Buyer beware, do not mistake this version for the Special Edition version which happens to have the same cover artwork. This cheaply priced edition has no extras whatsoever, and can be found in bargain bins.
Low cost version of the original.......2005-03-13
If you want to refresh your memory before seing the new release, this is better than a rental. You can find this version in the bargain bin for about $5.
Originally filmed in 1976, this movie follows a fairly common theme of that era. Criminals on a rampage.
They mayhem starts with the assasination of a group of gang members by police. This is followed by the sensless killing of a young girl and her father's attempt to strike back at the gremlins. He stumbles into an abandoned police station that is occupied by a handfull of cops and some convicts on their way to Death Row. Everyone must join forces and defend themselves against the assault that follows.
Since 99% of the movie takes place after dark, it is very difficult to pick out details in the scenes. A noticeable error was the weapon used by one of the prisoners against the gang members. He is given a silenced handgun that he uses during the assault. Note to the technical staff...a suppressor (silencer) doesn't work on a revolver.

Action buffs will have a fine time with the spray of bullets, shattering glass, and pyrotechnic silliness that makes up the bulk of Assault on Precinct 13. Updated from the little-known cops-and-robbers classic John Carpenter made in 1976 (two years before he made his name with Halloween), this high-concept thriller is mostly a lowbrow kill-fest, and is very happy with itself for being so efficient in both categories. A decrepit police station on its last night before retirement--New Year's Eve, no less--plays unexpected home to a gang of criminals who become snowbound in the basement lockup. Another mysterious gang of people who stealthily gather in the blizzard outside want one of the particularly nasty criminals (Laurence Fishburne) dead, and they'll take the rest of the precinct down too, by golly. The odd lot of characters trapped inside include a burned-out sergeant (Ethan Hawke), a sexpot secretary (post-Sopranos Drea de Matteo), an even sexier police psychologist (Maria Bello), and various other good guys and bad guys who variously go down in blazes of guts, glory, bullets, and fire. Hawke and Fishburne are opposite sides of the coin: the law, and the bathroom scale. Their need to partner in order to survive the guns outside is the movie's moral conflict, and both actors chew on Precinct 13's peeling walls and scuffed floors to drive the point home every chance they get. Obvious filmmaking fakery abounds in everything from the irksome snowstorm, frequent gunshots to the head, and a shadowy forest that conveniently presents itself in an industrial section of Detroit for the climactic showdown. No matter, this Assault is for non-thinkers who want blood and gunpowder, with no messy slowdowns for logic, please.--Ted Fry

Second Assault.......2005-02-07
Assault on Precinct 13 ('05) compares with Assault on Precinct 13 ('76) only in concept. The former is a big budget, star-studded, cop drama while the latter is a lower budget, gritty, near remake of Night of the Living Dead using gang members in place of zombies. While the old John Carpenter film might loose certain viewers due to its slow, deliberate pacing, it has remained a classic because of its many layers and subtext. For the new Richet version, a dramatic cop vs. gang boss plot has been stamped in and all layers, subtext, and richness tossed out. However, the stamped in plot is pretty well put together, with its weakest most forgettable moment installed as a preface (haven't filmmakers realized that prefaces and flashbacks almost always signal a script problem?). The preface serves as bad character motivation for Ethan Hawke's Sergeant Roenick. Go get your popcorn after the opening previews and miss the `undercover blues' setup as to why Roenick turns into a pill-popping loser only to save the day by the end. That aside, the film works as an action romp. The shoot-outs are good, tension always fills the air, and there are even a few zombie references: the bad guys take multiple hits and just keep coming, they are all suited in such a way as to be stripped of individuality, and some of the gorier kills hearken back to the Romero classics. Byrne and Freeman are fun to watch, as both take their roles coolly, using smallness rather than the over the top bigness that Hawke uses (not that effectively). John Leguizamo and Ja Rule play throw away characters, and that's exactly what happens to them (and you won't be disappointed when it happens, believe me.) So, while it's no cop/horror/masterpiece... it is a fun Saturday night action flick.
It's scraping average - not the best, not horrible.......2005-02-06
It's an action movie that won't be as good as the previews made it look. Other reviews say "The best movie ever by far" and things like that - well, maybe they're used to movies like Relic, Narc, and Kiss of the Dragon. Compared to them, sure the movie is good. But next to top rate action thrillers like The Recruit, Bourne Identity/Supremecy, Terminator movies, etc. it just feels like an average trek through action territory.
At leaste the guy from the Matrix renewed his name a bit - his stunt on the tanker Biker Boyz looked like it could have been his last role. Hawke is fine for the part, as is Ja Rule for Smiley. The cast fits the parts, but the movie overall fails to leave a lasting effect. The end is very cut and dry, let's wrap this up style. Cliche, immediate "semi - happy ending" (somewhat happy ending, but no spoilers here so I won't be specific) with a twist of mystery.
Recommend to rent, but not to buy. If you aren't afraid to spend some extra and aren't expecting a revolution, maybe even catch it at the theater if it's still on.
Note to concerned - Rated R for repeated strong language, drug content (beginning), and violence (head shots, etc.).
Peace out.
great movie.......2005-02-02
this was a very action packed movie from jean francois richet. since this movie has alot of nice action scenes.
Excellent!.......2005-01-31
I had seen the original movie in the 80s and was not very keen on seeing this one but I watched it last night since I didn't have anything better to do and boy was I impressed! This movie is VERY WELL MADE and keeps you on the edge of your seat...stunning visuals and extremely well planned action sequences with just the right mix of humor. On the whole, a thoroughly enjoyable film; I can't wait for the DVD to come out - this one's a KEEPER! :)
The return of cheese.......2005-01-30
First of all...if you like movies in the vein of "Cobra" and "Commando," then please feel free to add at least 3 stars to my review. For those of us who have long since outgrown movies of this type, well...read on.
First: Dont'cha hate reviewers that always put in a plot synopsis? I'm sure if you're reading these reviews, you already know what the movie's about.
So why my low rating? Plot holes, plot holes, plot holes! Throw in some really bad dialogue and you've got yourself a very poor movie.
Here's a small list of the plot holes I can remember. I'll try to be spoiler free, but be careful:
1. A police sargeant would shave and comb his damn hair before work.
2. The bad guys sure had a lot of equipment (that they would have had to sign out from their station's arms room...leaving a huge paper trail). And a helicopter? Did some cop have that in his backyard? How are the bad guys NOT going to get caught, even if they succeed in their task?
3. Within 10 seconds of meeting Iris, we're pounded over the head with the fact she's a slut. We GET IT, ALREADY.
4. The snow is super fake.
5. The sun rises VERY fast in them parts.
6. For those of you who've seen it, you'll know what I'm talking about: Any cop that says "No, there's nobody else out there" to cops who are walking into a potential firefight (with civilian Iris leading the way...wtf?) deserves to lay there and bleed to death.
7. Hey! The bad guys have laser sights! Why do they use them only once?
8. I know there's a blizzard going on, but is there NOBODY ELSE LIVING IN THIS CITY??? I mean, wouldn't an all out assault on a police precinct cause a LITTLE alarm? Oh...wait...it does. In the final minute of the movie. After everything dies down.
I have to agree with the previous reviewer who said the first 5 mintues were great. John Leguzamo (sp?) and Lawrence Fishburne were the only other saving graces. All in all, I'd highly advise you save the $5/$8/$57 dollars it'll cost you to see this flick (depending on where you live) and make a car payment or something.
