After they first worked together on the 1966 film This Property Is Condemned, director Sydney Pollack and Robert Redford continued their long-lasting collaboration with this 1972 drama set during the mid-1800s, about one man's rugged effort to shed the burden of civilization and learn to survive in the wilderness of the Rocky Mountains. Will Geer is perfectly cast as the seasoned trapper who teaches Jeremiah Johnson (Redford) how to survive against harsh winters, close encounters with grizzly bears, and hostile Crow Indians. In the course of his adventure, Johnson marries the daughter of a Flathead Indian chief, forms a makeshift family, and ultimately assumes a mythic place in Rocky Mountain folklore. Shot entirely on location in Utah, the film boasts an abundance of breathtaking widescreen scenery, and the story (despite a PG rating) doesn't flinch from the brutality of the wilderness. In addition to the original theatrical trailer, remastered Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack, and informative production notes, the DVD also includes The Saga of Jeremiah Johnson, a promotional documentary on the making of the film. --Jeff Shannon

Spectacular scenery and Redford never looked better, but SAD....
Chronicles the challenges and losses of a man who turns to the wilderness to find himself.
Did I mention it was sad?
Still vey worth watching.

5 out of 5 stars Back in the day. . ........2007-08-26

I'm an English teacher, trying to introduce American Literature in a friendly way to a media-sabotaged generation who think movies must say and tell all, leaving nothing to the imagination. Here is a movie made when movies were movies, made with care and accuracy, multi-thematically rich: man vs. nature, inter-racial marriage, and outcasts combining perfectly into a believable family. Redford is incredible, his 'squaw' is every bit his equal in portraying innocence and youth forced into a marriage she didn't choose, and 'Caleb' says everything without saying a single word. How did they do this? Done in a day when movies were magic and sheer talent filled the screen. Where has all the magic gone, long time passing. . .

5 out of 5 stars One tough naturalist........2007-08-07

Robert Redford plays Jeremiah Johnson,in the 1880's ?, a man not content to live among the people in the lowlands. To the mountains he went to live.
He meets an old mountain man and learns tips for survival .Never staying to long in one place he meets another man left for dead by a group of Crow Indians. The man is obnoxius and a louse. Liking to travel light and happiest alone, he ends up married with an Indian wife and saddled with an orphaned boy. The boy won't talk and the Indian wife cant speak english. He is a patient man and begins to draw the traumatized boy out of his shell. The Indian wife is patient as well and begins to gain Jeremiahs love. Jeremiah learns to love his strange family. A band of savage Indians, Crows again, ambushes the cabin when he is not there and murders his family.
Jeremiah becomes consumed with rage and thirsty for revenge he hunts down the Crows and kills them. Finally when his revenge is satiated he becomes again what he was before a loner in the mountains.
This is a beautiful film and a complex story you may need to watch it 2 or 6 times, because its just so enjoyable.

5 out of 5 stars Good stuff.......2007-08-02

Redford is awesome. The mountains are captured beautifully. A simple, yet intelligent, man at peace enough with himself to be all alone and depend solely on his own judgement.

An oddball love story about a fey loner named Sam (Johnny Depp), who falls in love with the mentally unbalanced Joon (Mary Stuart Masterson), who lives in the care of her protective brother Benny (Aidan Quinn). This 1993 story is hard to swallow, with its message that love can conquer a brand of mental illness that manifests itself in pyromania: Joon has a bad habit of going a bit around the bend and setting fires, but Sam's tender care apparently has the cure for what ails her. Still, if you want proof that Depp has significant chops as a physical comedian, give this film a try: He does note-perfect renditions of slapstick routines made famous by Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton. --Marshall Fine

I'd forgotten what a great movie this is! Johnny Depp, Mary Stuart Masterson, and Aidan Quinn are fabulous. This most untraditional romance will really touch your heart.

5 out of 5 stars Benny & Joon.......2007-08-23

A wonderful but somewhat little-known film that continues to add to the range of Johnny Depp.

5 out of 5 stars I love this movie!.......2007-08-03

This is one of my favorite moview for the human interest, the delicate handling of a difficult reality for many people...the humor and the performances. I have used the poker game scene to inspire "yardsale poker" were we all bet with used possessions and it was a BLAST. I never won or bet a cousin....yet. :)

5 out of 5 stars Calling all Johnny Depp Fans!.......2007-07-24

I will keep this short and sweet. If you are a Johnny Depp fan, this is a must to add to your collection. It is a great story and as always, Johnny Depp is a great actor.

5 out of 5 stars Psychologically stimulating.......2007-07-21

Interesting concepts, moving, heartfelt, wonderfully entertaining and comidic humor. Another great film wonderfully directed with the young Johnny Depp. A gamut of emotions are stirred. A clean, funny and beautifully written piece.

Men who piloted the hottest fighter planes in the world found themselves suddenly transformed from hotshots to humiliated prisoners during the Vietnam War. The story of how American prisoners survived in North Vietnam's notorious prison camps is dramatically told in this documentary, an installment of the American Experience series on PBS. The men, who survived appalling treatment, relate their experiences, and vintage footage, including propaganda films shot by their captors, portrays what they endured. A former POW describes how he was coached before being put on public display, yet he spelled out the word "torture" in Morse code by blinking his eyes, a defiant action that can clearly be seen in footage that the North Vietnamese provided to the world's media. Another former prisoner, who somehow survived massive injuries despite being denied medical care, describes how he had to lie on the concrete floor of his cell for nearly a year, just trying to get his arms and legs to function again. These inspirational stories lead up to an emotional climax as the prisoners, including Arizona Senator John McCain, describe what it was like to be freed after their long captivity. This is a deeply moving and inspiring story told by men who overcame great depths of human suffering. --Robert J. McNamara

Description

RETURN WITH HONOR tells the powerful, moving story of American pilots shot down over North Vietnam and their challenge to survive with honor as POW's. A tribute to heroism, endurance, and brotherhood under duress, the film recalls the transformation from top-gun aviators to captives. Told in their words, rich with survivor humor, and complete with North Vietnamese archival footage, the film is a universal story of honor and duty.

4 out of 5 stars Not Forgotten.......2006-07-12

A classic in the genre of Vietnam documentaries. This 1999 film is about American POW airmen, and their ordeal throughout the Vietnam war. What I love about this film is that there is no political angle - these men tell their own stories in their own words, framed by America at the time. No one can walk away from this film and not feel touched.

5 out of 5 stars A Very Thorough, Powerful Documentary.......2005-09-15

It is simply the best documentary on the American POWs in North Vietnam. After reading numerous books on the Vietnam POW experience, this film is very thorough. It gets chilling when the POWs are speaking, then a flashback film footage showing their conditions at the time of their captivity. My anger towards Jane Fonda was heightened as I watched this film. I'll never forget her calling the POWs "liars and hypocrites" and also stated that "history will judge them harshly." She also made the insane claim that they were not tortured. I'm glad they omitted Fonda and her POW role, as she would denegrate this film and the truth it displays.

5 out of 5 stars Perhaps the best television I've ever seen..........2004-02-09

This piece is incredible. I caught it on PBS during one Memorial Day weekend a few years ago and was spellbound. I taped it onto VHS and watch it several times a year. It is an incredibly powerful documentary--the best television I've ever seen (thank goodness it's on DVD now as well).

4 out of 5 stars Common Men, Uncommon Courage.......2003-10-26

Many of the descriptions of the experiences of the POW's of the Vietnam War that I was aware of centered around the torture that they went through. This video gave a fuller description of who our POW's were rather than the specific torture that they experienced. I don't know if enough was said about the leadership of people like Denton, Risner, and Stockdale. I was amazed at how normal the men looked given the horrors that they went through. I heard nothing of permanent damage. There was a brief section on what the wives experienced. I don't remember anything on the diet of the POW's. I never knew that there had been at least one escape (for which the recaptured POW's and remaining POWs paid dearly). I would have liked to know how many POW's died in prison. I was also surprised to hear that some thought their treatment got better after the death of Ho Chi Mihn.

For a full picture of who our pow's were and what they experienced done in a format that was tolerable for the more squeamish among us I think this was very well done.

5 out of 5 stars An exceptionally good documentary...........2003-05-03

In what is probably the most revealing documentary ever created on ex-POW's from Vietnam, Return With Honor is an outstanding testament to absolute courage, honor, bravery, camaraderie, and survival.

Individual interviews woven with footage from United States and Vietnamese archives paint a very vivid and oftentimes emotional picture of the brutal experience suffered by our U.S. servicemen held captive in Hanoi.

Leaving very little to the imagination, this documentary explores the many facets of captivity to include barbaric torture, communication processes between prisoners, coping with solitary confinement, demoralizing loneliness, and inhuman living conditions. Additional interviews with the spouses of POW's reveal their pain and emotion they dealt with on the home front while not knowing the fates of their husbands.

Finishing off with their triumphant return home, it is truly inspirational and heartwarming to see the footage of these heroic men reunited with their families.

This DVD itself has superb sound and video qualities and offers good additional features such as 26 biographies of POW's and interviews with the producers on the making of Return With Honor.

This documentary comes very highly recommended to everyone and leaves you with a resounding message of patriotism and a deep respect for America and her U.S. servicemen.

4 out of 5 stars Good if You Don't Take it Seriously.......2007-07-20

This isn't the best movie I have ever seen, and it isn't the worst. For the most part the acting was good with the exception of one or two actors and actresses, but for the most part it was an interesting movie that was able to keep me watching it. The whole premise of the guy going from guy to girl after drinking some weird formula is a little far fetched, but the actor and actress playing those two parts were able to pull it off perfectly. As long as you can get past the premise of he/she changing sexes constantly, and don't take the movie seriously, you will enjoy watching it

4 out of 5 stars COOLEST MOVIE.......2002-06-25

Alright, this was the best movie I have seen and it was damn funny too. I havent seen it in a while so some details might be off. In the begining the main charicter (a man) creates a formula to make their sexual stamina or something like that go up(for the person who drinks it.) Anyway,he tests it on himself and transforms into a very, very, sexy woman. The first time he transforms he runs into the ladies-room and is starting to enjoy his new body. He feels his breasts alot.(Im a guy so I have to admitt that if I turned into a girl that loked like him (h is a man just in the form of a woman) that I would be excited and do more. Anyway I think that he only transforms when he gets sexualy excited. There was also a part when he was offered a job to be the head of sexual products or something like that. So thats all I remember.

4 out of 5 stars Someone Who can not only ACT but do it with her face........2001-09-16

This is a slap comedy but very funny.
The lead Actors who play, Robert and the She-Robert are great.
This movie has some actors who are far from, "GOOD". But the lead
actors are well casted. Stephanee LaFleur "MAKES" this movie. She is someone who we will deffently see making her way in "A" films.
She not only can act but she can act with her face. Jeff (Robert) has some great acting as well. As far as the rest of the cast we will deffently only see them in "B" movies.
This movie is well worth watching. It's funny and it is fun to watch the He/she Robert make his way through this movie.

3 out of 5 stars Good, goofy gender-bending fun.......2000-08-17

What would you do if you were a male scientist whose newest discovery caused you to transform into a woman every time you became sexually aroused? "Sexual Chemistry" provides the amusing answer. Although an extremely low-budget shot-on-video feature, "Sexual Chemistry" offers an amusing storyline and competent, if broad, performances. Be warned that this could be considered soft-porn by some viewers, as a number of simulated sex scenes are included. But the fact that most of them are humorous in nature takes the edge off, and the lead actress (playing the "new" woman) is just a lot of fun to watch and beautiful to look at, to boot. If you're a fan of transgendered films or just like sexy movies, give "Sexual Chemistry" a try.

5 out of 5 stars --Very entertaining--.......2005-06-15

After The Harvest is a well done film with a lot of interesting characters. Sam Shepard gives an excellent performance portraying a complex and domineering man who completely controls his wife and four children.

The story begins when a young schoolteacher arrives in a rural area to live with a farm family. The mother and children of the family are distant and make very few overtures of friendship towards the teacher. The father lets her know that he will be watching her conduct and is responsible for her since she is living in his home.

Although the ages of the children are not stated. They appear to be in their late teens to early twenties. Their father works them all very hard and the girls labor along side their brothers. They tend the animals, mend fences, and plant and harvest the crops. Their mother is aloof and there is no love or affection shown by either parent towards their offspring. The teacher is the catalyst and becomes friends with the oldest daughter, Jude, who is a strong character and the one who usually stands up to her father; however, all of his children fear him.

When the teacher encourages Jude to socialize and date, things change for the entire family. Surprisingly, the mother becomes a key player when she makes a startling discovering and has to come to grips with her own past.

This film was made in Canada, and is really worth seeing.

5 out of 5 stars Well done drama.......2004-08-19

My husband and I both enjoyed this drama set in rural Canada in the 1920s. The writing was good, as was the acting. The opening scenes were filmed particularly beautifully. I believe this was made for Canadian TV, making me think that Canada must have much higher entertainment values than America. The themes of love, tyranny, destruction, and survival were thoughtfully handled, and parents would not be embarrassed to share this film with (mature) older children.

After they first worked together on the 1966 film This Property Is Condemned, director Sydney Pollack and Robert Redford continued their long-lasting collaboration with Jeremiah Johnson, a 1972 drama set during the mid-1800s, about one man's rugged effort to shed the burden of civilization and learn to survive in the wilderness of the Rocky Mountains. --Jeff Shannon

The first feature film to be photographed and projected in the panoramic three-camera Cinerama process, the epic Western How the West Was Won is almost as expansive as the West itself, chronicling a pioneering family's triumphs and tragedies in numerous episodes spanning three generations and a half century of westward movement. Divided into five segments directed by veteran Hollywood filmmakers Henry Hathaway, George Marshall, and the legendary John Ford (and including uncredited sequences directed by Richard Thorpe), the film was one of the most ambitious ever made by the venerable MGM studio. Its stellar cast reads like a virtual who's who of Hollywood's biggest stars. Debbie Reynolds plays a sturdy survivor of many pioneering dangers, and the eventual widow of a gambler (Gregory Peck), who is later reunited with her nephew (George Peppard), a Civil War veteran and cavalryman who heads for San Francisco as the transcontinental railroad is being built. Many more characters and stories are woven throughout this epic film, which is dramatically uneven but totally engrossing with its stunning vistas and countless outdoor locations in Illinois, Kentucky, South Dakota, Monument Valley in Arizona, California, Colorado, and elsewhere. --Jeff Shannon

4 out of 5 stars campy fun and great Amsterdam.......2007-05-20

This movie was so unbelievable, it was fun. Agreed with the opinions of the great Amsterdam scenes. I had never seen a movie made there. Charming place.

I enjoyed the boat bum. All the parts where the girl gets the best of the hitman were so unbelievable. In one part a supposed 10-year-old (she looks 16, if she's a day), swings from a beam in an elevator shaft and kicks the hitman off balance. Picture a normal sized 10-year-old girl doing this. Which makes the whole thing really nutty. Oh, and the ambulance chase with the William Hurt character hanging on outside was pure Charlie Chaplin. I expected him to lose an arm grabbing the crowbar at such high speed. I cringed at the crashes and hoped nothing in that lovely antique town was damaged.

1 out of 5 stars I want my hour and forty minutes back ! ! !.......2007-05-17

I just wish there was a way to rate this one with negative stars. I've never rated anything, but cannot bear the thought of some other poor bored soul losing precious time with this stinker. I watch a lot of movies, and this may very well be the worst I've ever seen. To quote the person who watched it with me "Shame on William Hurt. Shame on Denis Leary and Jennifer Tilley. Shame on the kid who brought sandwiches to the set at lunch!"

Apparently there were no Dutch in Amsterdam while filming this because everyone spoke with an American accent. Maybe the Dutch read the script first and knew better.

If you want to spin a positive on this movie, then turn it into a drinking game. Every time Bill Hurt switches back and forth from a Southern drawl to his normal voice, take a shot of your favorite liquor. Mercifully you will pass out before wasting time on the ending.

3 out of 5 stars Silly, Impossible Action in Amsterdam Starring Hurt & Tilly.......2004-05-20

Well, I admit, this is a very, very silly film by cult Dutch film maker Dick Maas, starring William Hurt, Jennifer Tilly, and Dennis Leary. Like all the Maas's films -- did you see Naomi Watts in "The Shaft"? -- "Silent Witness" is an uncomfortable blend of thrill and laugh, and though the actors try their best, the result is not as good as is intended.

The film is also titled "Do Not Disturb," and quite appropriately starts with the scene where newly-arrived family (Hurt and Tilly ... most unlikely husband and wife) check in Hotel De L'Europe in Amsterdam. They also have a pretty daughter (Francesca Brown) who cannot speak (hence, Silent Witness), who, well, witnesses a murder done by a hitman (Corey Johnson).

The rest of the film is about the 10 year-old girl's attempt to save her life and tell the truth to the parents. The cat-and-mouse situation sometimes becomes silly when this girl can foil the professional hitman's attacks, displaying the impossible ruses you can never imagine yourself. And when in real trouble, an American Dennis Leary (who happens to live in the small boat in the city's canal) offers a help.

Still, ridiculous as it is, the film is always good to see for its locations. The seductive charms of the night of Amsterdam are beautifully captured, and after all Dick Maas lived in this city for more than 25 years, so why not? And the film comes with the surprisingly good action sequences shot on the streets of the city.

If you have absolutely nothing to do, or just want to see the beautiful city of Amsterdam, "Silent Witness" is a place to go. Otherwise, stick to Bruce Willis's "Die Hard" which this film is definitely not.

3 out of 5 stars Movie set in Amsterdam.......2002-03-17

An American businessman, played by William Hurt, takes his family to Amsterdam on a combined business/pleasure trip. While they are there his daughter, a mute, witnesses a murder. She is pursued by the murderers and shows courage and resourcefulness which would be extremely rare in a 10-year-old. There are some exciting scenes, but the acting on the part of Hurt and his screen wife, Meg Tilly, is not up to their usual standards. The movie pretty well depends on the special effects and they are not strong enough to maintain this film.

    1 out of 5 stars In a Word: Terrible.......2001-06-19

It is hard to imagine William Hurt in a film that is absolutely terrible but he manages it in this lame vehicle. He even has trouble maintaining a Southern accent throughout the film, sometimes using one, sometimes not. Dennis Leary, the comic turned actor, is also wasted here but his onscreen time is very small. The plot is that Hurt's daughter, a mute ten year old, witnesses a murder in Amsterdam. For the rest of the movie, the villain's hit man tries to kill the girl. Not only can this ten year old manage to constantly foil a "professional," but this hit man must have failed Hit Man School. He absolutely cannot do anything right in carrying out his job and cannot even manage to own a gun that works properly. Bottom line: steer clear of this one.

--Robert J. McNamara

This documentary comes very highly recommended to everyone and leaves you with a resounding message of patriotism and a deep respect for America and her U.S. servicemen.
