Krav Maga is a peerless martial art in the modern world. The content in the DVDs is informative and,in my opinion, worth the money. It's realistic and easy to follow.
An interesting look at self defense........2006-03-20
Krav Maga is oriented towards people who cannot, or will not, dedicate the time and effort it takes to become a refined martial artist. This is not an attack on the system itself, but just a fact. Practitioners of Krav Maga seem to take pride in this fact.
The fundamentals are simple and straightforward and if done with commitment and a bit of training they can make the difference between life and death. There is nothing really unique in Krav Maga except that it teaches many simple moves for a variety of situations and emphasizes learning those techniques very effectively.
Would Krav Maga, as it is taught in it's core curriculum, stand up against a someone who has seriously studied martial arts? Absolutely not. But perhaps that wouldn't matter because most street thugs or criminals aren't disciplined enough to learn martial arts in the first place.
Does this mean that you can watch these tapes once and have them magically turn you into a Krav Maga expert? Of course not. However, if you were to say, watch them once a week and practice them move for move, perhaps keeping a log of where you left off, then I would say you would be in a much better position to defend yourself and loved one's in a violent attack.
My only real complaints about his set are the knife defenses. Personally I would never use these techniques and I also think they aren't taught properly. For example, during a knife attack the position of your body is one of the most essential aspects of survival and yet they don't really give any attention to foot work (where your feet go your body will follow).
My other complaint is the first DVD of this set is really just an infomercial for Krav Maga and of absolutely no use whatsoever. It's not even a very good infomercial.
But out of all the self defense systems that I've seen oriented towards those who do not know what to do if they are attacked and have little or no experience with realistic martial arts instruction, then I would say you would be wise to purchase these DVDs and train with them. It's far from a complete education but all it takes is a few techiniques understood well to save your life one day.
Very well done and I would have given 5 stars easily but I think the knife problem is a BIG problem and perhaps should have been dealt with accordingly.
