Good message of the story, dark, and manipulative directing of the movie........2007-09-10
The message I got from the movie is that no one is greater or any less than anyone else. The message, about the equality, is exactly the way God views people. God does not favor one over the other.
There were many other things that were said in the movie that were Biblical. For example, letting go of sins, pleasures of this world, as well as the most important, a lying spirit (in the movie portrayed as evil self)...
I liked the title and bought the DVD, but I had to be patient. And so will yo. The movie is a bit slow in the beginning and kind of creepy. I expected it to be more beautiful, more colorful, peaceful may be?... But it wasn't, at least not until curtain climaxes. I'd say it's pretty dark for the most part and pretty uplifting in other.
Also, the message although good, is mixed with tons of Biblical teachings as I've said before, but Buddah is mentioned rather in a respective way in the movie and Jesus is mentioned in a form of guys cursing at each other, like "well, Jesus man, blah, blah...". I donno about the book, but it was clear to me that the directors of it tried to give a new age impression of the movie to the viewer. Which they failed, because the message taken from the book pierced through and spoke to a heart that hears. Even the writer of the book admitted that the producers tried to do their own thing with the movie, which resulted with having lots of flaws, but he says that the main message cut through the flaws and will only motivate the viewer to actually buy the book after watching the movie because they'll want to learn more. So I recommend to watch it, but read the book regardless! Hope that was helpful.
All the best,
God bless,
Nick
kept my interest.......2007-09-06
This movie had a powerful message--still something was missing and I cannot put my finger on it!
A good story for anyone confused about their place in life.
Maybe the book is better.
Happiness Surely Is In The Journey!.......2007-09-04
The inspirational unfolding of a young man, who at such a young college age, realizes there's more to life than beer, fun, sex and girls. How refreshing to sit back and watch this movie!
Anyone with an ounce of purpose or passion can relate to this fabulous story. Who doesn't have a dream?
I was given this DVD by a friend of mine. It sat on the bookshelf for about a month until just last night when I was bored and decided to watch a movie. So, I popped 'Peaceful Warrior' into the DVD player. Not knowing what to expect (I had never heard of Dan Millman), I must say I was intriqued from the beginning. I was also elated to read that it was inspired by true events. I watched it a second time within 24 hours.
Yes, one must empty the trash they've accumulated over the years from parents, education, and society. Discovering who we really are and what we can accomplish comes from separating ourselves from the collected garbage into a KNOWING.
Dan had a fascination for mystique when Socrates was introduced in the movie. The mind is inquisitive about things it doesn't understand. Thankfully, in his case, as in the lives of many others, the drawing unto us what we need, when we need it, does not go unfulfilled - even in the midst of the seeming ignorance surrounding us. The time has come when more and more people are realizing their higher capacity of intelligence, wisdom, and purpose.
As a child, I was in an auto accident. Like Dan, I had crushed bones. And, like Dan, I recovered miraculously to perfection in a short time despite warnings and dire predictions from the medical profession. Nothing is impossible (to God). My experience was over 50 years ago, and just last year my old school principle (now in his eighty's) told me he never forgot it. Like Dan's classmates, my friends also wanted to know about the 'magic'. But like Dan said, "It ISN'T magic". (And, as we all know, magic is an illusion, anyway!)
What time is it, Dan? It's NOW (as he realized). That's the only time we have. Use it to perfection.
If this movie does nothing more than make someone THINK about endless possibilities, it has done its good. If it makes someone ACT to achieve those endless possibilities, it has done even more good. Kudos!

Peaceful Warrior is awesome.......2007-09-01
I have read the two books in this series an I think this movie did a pretty good job of putting the core messages from the book accross. Although it didn't follow the book's details or the fact that Socrates exit wasn't near the same, it was still a good movie with a great set of learning tools for life. if you have seen the movie and not read the book I would recommend reading the book. I definitely recommend the movie too.
TIME WELL SPENT.......2007-08-23
This movie is magical - inspired by a book that reflected the spirit of the 70s: the search for meaning. Although the message of Peaceful Warrior is the movie's strong point, it is matched by the superb acting, direction, and cinematography. This is the kind of movie that, depending on your personal evolution, may have a profound impact on how you approach the rest of your life.
Description
Brad Pitt picks up a sword and brings a muscular, brooding presence to the role of Greek warrior Achilles in this spectacular retelling of The Iliad. Orlando Bloom and Diane Kruger play the legendary lovers who plunge the world into war, Eric Bana portrays the prince who dares to confront Achilles, and Peter O'Toole rules Troy as King Priam. Director Wolfgang Petersen recreates a long-ago world of bireme warships, clashing armies, the massive fortress city and the towering Trojan Horse.

The Warriors combines pure pulp storytelling and surprisingly poetic images into a thoroughly enjoyable cult classic. The plot is mythically pure (and inspired by a legendary bit of Greek history): When a charismatic gang leader is shot at a conclave in the Bronx meant to unite all the gangs in New York City, a troupe from Coney Island called the Warriors get blamed and have to fight all the way back to their own turf--which means an escalating series of battles with colorful and improbable gangs like the Baseball Furies, who wear baseball uniforms and KISS-inspired face make-up. Pop existentialism, performances that are somehow both wooden and overwrought, and zesty, kinetic filmmaking from director Walter Hill (Southern Comfort, 48 Hrs.) result in a delicious and unexpectedly resonant operatic cheesiness. The Ultimate Director's Cut doesn't radically alter the movie--some of the editing is tighter, the Greek legend has been added as an introduction--with one exception: in transitions, scenes begin and end as scenes from a comic book. While The Warriors always had a comic book flavor (and Hill, in an interview, says he deliberately pursued that sensibility), this device--similar to The Hulk--seems a bit overkill. But it's a minor problem; the movie holds its own, even 26 years later. The dvd has no audio commentary, but there are four short documentaries (really, one documentary in four parts). These include excellent interviews with Hill, actors Michael Beck, James Remar, David Patrick Kelly, and Deborah Van Valkenburgh. The producers, the cinematographer, the costume designer, the stunt coordinator, and many others give lively and in-depth descriptions of how the movie came to be. One of these documentaries includes portions of a deleted scene that was used when The Warriors was screened on television; no other deleted scenes are included. --Bret Fetzer
Product Description
A battle of gigantic proportions is looming in the neon underground of New York City. The armies of the night number 100,000; they outnumber the police 5 to 1; and tonight they're after the Warriors - a street gang blamed unfairly for a rival gang leader's death. This contemporary action-adventure story takes place at night, underground, in the sub-culture of gang warfare that rages from Coney Island to Manhattan to the Bronx. Members of the Warriors fight for their lives, seek to survive in the urban jungle and learn the meaning of loyalty. This intense and stylized film is a dazzling achievement for cinematographer Andrew Laszlo.

Great Urban Tale.......2007-08-27
Although it doesn't really portray gang life in New York at the time the movie is entertaining. "Warriors come out and play."
Corey Cotta, Author of All Of Yesterdays Tomorrows.
Is everybody packed ?.......2007-05-31
WARRIORS (1979) is a quintessential late 1970's movie partly in from
the automobiles shown, the debilitated housing and neighborhoods
specifically chosen, and the cheesy 70's era hard rock soundtrack.
Its strength is that it touches on the basic survival and
self-preservation instincts that people have when in danger. Some
may have come to recognize this as fear, and the reaction that ensues
in varying degrees. Those in the military know this well, in combat,
for example.
The story stresses the need for physical fitness (running, jogging,
weight lifting) and excellence in one-to-one hand combat to properly
engage opposing gangs. At the time, this did not encompass gun powder
weaponry, as the arms perhaps were difficult to obtain, and the minds
of the gangs did not see a need for mortality, but rather, "just"
baseball bats, switch blades, molotov cocktails, physical brutality,
arson of vehicles, subway stations, etc.
Above all, what works most, is the amusement and the reaction to a
host of ridiculous scenarios, such as a policewoman working
undercover in a park, looking to actively entrap johns or rapists.
Other examples are the fashion or clothing selections of some gangs
(purple vests anyone?), or even the intro that suggests this plot
being on the same level as the ancient wars told by Homer in respect
of the Greeks and Trojans before the Roman Empire.
The formation of gangs is not entirely unrealistic, in some respects,
as they are often built by ethnicity, with the Warriors being the
sole exception.
The plot is reasonable, starting with a jamboree of sorts attempting
to get various gangs to unite together, for profit maximization of
their untold activities, with the except of a gang of anarchists.
The role of the police is well presented, as they are shown as being
effective, against literally dozens of platoons of thugs, mainly
comprised of youths who seem to have unlimited amounts of free time
on their hands, mainly in the evenings and at night, in the public
transportation systems of NYC and streets.
Amusingly, but unrealistically, a Radio DJ comes on from time to
time, with her score sheet (as if assisting to a boxing match), to
provide the listeners with the latest on the gang strife. (This is
the same actress that shows up in Enzo Castellari's movie, as a gang
leader of stylish dancers in New Barbarians.)
With NYC's dark underbelly (neighborhoods) exposed, it brings into
focus the territorial limits, that gangs feel should not be crossed
by opposing ones, as a matter of pride and of economic control.
Although this DVD is not a true wide-screen release, it does not
distract at all from the action. The filming is good, sharp and good
quality, well edited, if not for the erroneous artistic choice of
using cartoons in between scenes, unfortunately, which takes the
audience out of their surreal experience.
The eye-candy of Deborah Van Valkenburgh obviously works well, as a
contrast to the bleak subway scenes, and to the combat and action
scenes, yet, implausible in her eagerness to forego her own gang and
join Swan.
In sum, Warriors is obviously a popular movie among a segment of the
population, above all, those below 15 or 21, or those in high
schools, owing to the interaction and interplay between gangs and
within the gangs, that is one-on-one, consistently, which makes the
action personal to the audience, never anonymous, impersonal, or
inconsequential. In 2007, the music is a liability, as it has no hip
hop or other styles that were invented and now dominate radio.
The Warriors ultimate directors cut........2007-05-26
I am a long time fan of the movie and from a rather young age I thought it was gritty and very striking. I was about 10 when I first saw the movie and I thought it was told rather well.I wasn't really looking for the movie when I came across the sale for it it brought back a lot of memories. I think as I'm sure most do the bottle rattling was probably the most telling part of the movie and the most memorable scene. In the new cut I really liked the new layout like a comic it was a new twist on the transitions The begining dialog would have made more sense had he Drawn more relevance to the warrior gang than he did.I do think this is a good version of the film and I would recomend it for those that were fans of the original cut.
Re-Mastered so Much Better!.......2007-05-16
Just finished watching 'The Warriors'
I have not seen this movie in 10+ years and was surprised at how well it has stood the test of time.
Very Simplistic and yet Very Complex in it's story telling.
Loved the cartoon angle infused in the Editing.
The 5 stars is for the 'Special Features'.
Very very cool to have the Director, Producers, Editors and Actors explaining the thought process of the movie and how some changes were made mid-flight during the actual shooting of the movie and the technical difficulties that arose and were overcome .

Enough is Enough.......2007-09-04
Listen I love a Great Sword & Sandal movie and "Troy" delivered on all parts, but I get tired of all the Special Editions, Super Special Edition, Directors Cut Super Duper Special Edition and so forth. Release the movie with the Unrated Edition and leave it at that. If these additional scenes were so good they should've been in the movie in the 1st.place.
Fantastic Director's Cut.......2007-08-30
I am lucky enough to have seen a screening of the Director's Cut for Troy prior to this DVD's release. I haven't seen the DVD extras, so all I can address here is the movie itself. It is fanstastic - the 40 minutes of additonal material adds meat to the bones of the original. The added footage and new score gives the movie a grander scope and serious gravitas. The colors are richer. There are additional scenes that give you a better insight into the Paris and Helen relationship as well as scenes that give more depth to Odysseus and Priam. I loved it.
I was already a fan of the original, and now cannot recommend this new improved version highly enough.
Seriously... why?.......2007-08-29
Tell me something: were there really a group of hardcore die-hards of "Troy", somewhere in the world, asking Wolfgang Peterson and/or Warner Bros. for a definite edition of this lukewarm toga-fest?
I don't know, maybe it's just me, but even rabid Brad Pitt fans don't seem to really care about this flick - not that it's really a bad film per say. It's just... irrelevant. The best scene in the movie, hands down, is that fight between Pitt and Eric Bana; everything else has been DONE TO DEATH in MUCH BETTER pictures.
So the idea of another 2-disc edition completely puzzle me... or not - let's face: execs at Warner Bros. would sell out their own mothers to make a buck!

No computer graphic can ever surpass what a real human body can do--and what the body can do is on spectacular display in Ong-Bak, a Thai action movie starring the lithe and flexible Tony Jaa. When the head is stolen from a holy statue in Jaa's rural village, he goes to Bangkok to get it back. Of course, it just so happens that the thief is connected to a bar where criminal big shots gamble over bare-knuckle brawls, and Jaa is--despite his virtuous efforts--drawn into the game. But that's only the beginning; a chase through the city streets rivals the ingenious acrobatics of Jackie Chan, with Jaa leaping between panes of glass, over a bicycle in motion, and through a wreath of barbed wire. Jaa's fighting prowess has been compared to Bruce Lee, Jet Li, and just about every other martial arts master, but he has an equal degree of charisma as well. He won't win acting awards, but his engaging presence carries the movie. One word of warning: The numerous fights will make you wince as much as gape in astonishment. Ong-Bak follows the action-flick tradition that the hero needs to be as battered as possible before he ultimately triumphs, and the battering is intense. --Bret Fetzer
Description
When the head of his village's sacred Buddha statue is stolen, simple country boy Ting (Tony Jaa) is sent to Bangkok to retrieve it. Raised by a monk who has trained him in Muay Thai, Ting has vowed to never use his lethal martial arts skills. But once he arrives in the big city, Ting is forced to fight. It's non-stop action as Ting infiltrates Bangkok's seedy underworld and takes on a series of lowlifes and criminals in his quest to obtain the sacred head.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent Martial Art Realism.......2007-08-27
There are a handful of movies that have true raw martial arts skills shown and not so much special effect talents demonstrated. Bruce Lee is one that comes to mind most. Although I enjoy Chuck Norris and Steven Seagal's movies and they showed their talents, there were certainly more special effects and stunts than true raw skills demonstrated. This movie shows raw talent and will remind you of the early Bruce Lee movies. I imagine we will see Tony Jaa again soon. This foriegn film has English subtitles. Unfortunately they are only for those that can't hear so you will read it when birds chirp and techno music plays. A minor complaint but a bit distracting. Overall this will appeal to fans of martial arts movies. mainly. I suggest you rent it if you enjoy foreign movies or martial art movies.
Tony Jaa plays Ting, a Thai whose village is invaded by thugs that steal the head of their Buddha. His village pleads with him to get it back since there is a festival coming and he won the tree climbing contest and is a known accomplished fighter. The villages pitches in and gives him all their money. He goes to Bangkok to look for the men and he ends up visiting an Uncle who is into gambling. He takes Tings money and gambles it away. Ting must then fight in competitions to recover it and the head of the Buddha. Very thrilling fight scenes in different locales. The movie gives a good feel for life in Thailand and has good production values. As for critics, considering the sheer number of martial arts moves in this movie I was in awe of the very few slightly missed hits. Choreographing this kind of movie is a nightmare because if you aren't doing full on hits it is more difficult to show realistic fight scenes. So my hat is off to Jaa for so many moves and so few mistakes.
The only martial arts movie that made me want to buy it.......2007-08-04
Im bryan and im 15 I love this movie, it was the actual movie that started me wanting to collect martial arts movies, I recomend the protector if you see it available, Tony jaa is the best guy for this job, the fights are amazing, the feel is so very real, and every bone break, and elbow, and knee, he gets his opponent with is just something amazing, this movie is worthy of any martial arts dvd collection!
Amazing athletics........2007-06-16
While not a fan of these kind of movies I watched this after hearing about the incredible skill of the star. While the premise, storytelling, and acting aren't great, it's not what people watch these movies for.
But as a centerpiece for the abilities of Tony Jaa, it works. The dvd box stresses that there are no camera tricks or special effects, and it looks like that's true. The 'stunts' that Jaa does are incredible, and I can recommend this only for that. Some of the staged stunts come across as cheesy regardless of the amount of skill and strength needed to perform them. Like him walking across his pursuers shoulders to get away from them, or that some of the stunts are show many times but from different angles.
Entertaining for fans of the genre.
Tony Jaa is WICKED!.......2007-05-21
This movie is what you should expect from a low-budget foreign produced movie. Not shot for American viewing, but the stunts he does are SO INCREDIBLE it more than makes up for the shallow story line and acting.
Great movie........2007-05-07
People got to see this movie. Tony Jaa is fantastic in martial arts stunt but true. He is the new Bruce Lee. Now I'm interested on learning the Muay Thai myself.

1 good news and 2 bad news.......2007-09-02
I was delighted when i saw this movie available in HD and i rushed to buy it.Yes the madmax "icon" is still alive since 1982 but the movie has difficult to live well today.
The good news is about the picture quality which is very good withy no grain.
Despite what you may think about typical Mad Max actions scenes the movie is boring for 2 reasons
a) there is nearly no dialog and instead of this there is a permanent horrible music with trumpets and brass instruments who try to give the rythm in the movie. This kills everything.
b) the audio is realy under average. don't expect to hear the engines roaring and the explosion to blow yr living room.
So my opinion is at least rent it before to buy it
In the opposite and maybe in the same category "Waterworld" in HD DVd is something totaling amazing at all levels.
HD DVD delivers.......2007-07-17
I won't go into the movie itself, since everyone has seen it by now and knows it is a classic. This HD disc is great though, for a movie of this budget and age. There are a few short segments that look soft, but overall this disc has spectacular razor sharp HD, and I never thought Mad Max 2 could ever look this great. Seriously, some of these scenes are some of the best I've seen from my HD-A2.
Now for the not-so-good. Sound is adequate, but it won't knock anyone's socks off. The disc is absolutely bare bones. But if you gotta have this movie in HD, I doubt you would be disappointed.
The classic post-apocalyptic sci-fi thriller.......2007-07-05
Sequel to the earlier Mad Max movie, The Road Warrior is a blast of fun and looks great on HD DVD.
I hadn't seen this in years but picked up the HD DVD right away, and it sure looks good. A very fun movie with the classic anti-hero hero Max and, of course, the great chase scene at the climax.
I seem to recall that the third movie, Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome, was a bloated bust of a sequel, but that hasn't been released on HD DVD yet...
The best it's going to get for Mad Max fans.......2007-06-13
I'm rating this 5-stars not because it's the best look HD-DVD ever, but because I believe this is certainly the best presentation of Road Warrior that's ever been released, or will ever likely be released. It's a keeper.
I remember seeing this movie in the theater. I don't think even the film as shown in the theater contained this much detail, as I noticed details in the movie that I had not seen before. It's a excellent picture.
The sound is good, but nothing like blockbuster movies from recent years, because Road Warrior was made several years ago, and not exactly on a huge budget. Still, it's the best sound quality you're likely to hear for this movie.
Some purists may enjoy the fact that the movie is shown with the title "Mad Max 2" rather than "The Road Warrior" at the beginning, but I don't like it. When I saw the movie in the theater it said "The Road Warrior", and had a bright shining metal effect. I wanted to see THAT, not something that was originally shown in Austrailia. However, I'm not going to get all misty over it and lower the star rating.
If you have Road Warrior on DVD or LaserDisc this is one title that you should absolutely buy the replacement HD-DVD. It makes a big difference.
Finally!.......2007-05-19
I'm saying "finally" because we've finally received a version of the Road Warrior that looks outstanding! The picture looks the best I've ever seen and while the sound isn't as great in terms of bass reproduction, it still sounds very clear, just a tiny bit lackluster. Several of the scenes have a bit of softness to them probably due to age but I'd say about 95% of the film looks crystal clear. There aren't many extras other than an introduction by film critic Leonard Maltin and a filmmaker commentary. A bit lacking in the extras department but the commentary is informative enough for film enthusiasts and fans of the film. It'd be nice to get a retrospective documentary one day on this classic.
At the end of the day, the movie is delivered in an above average presentation and definitely worth a peek in HD.

Impressive transfer.......2007-08-03
I have always been a fan of this and the original Mad Max movies. I was pleasently suprised with the quality of the transfer to Blu-ray fo rsuch an old movie. It had it's poor quality moments, but they were far out-weighed by the quality cheesey-ness of the films story. Loved it!
Great Movie - Great Transfer to HD.......2007-07-19
So most people are already familiar with the story. It is basically a post apocalyptic view of the world where society has completely broken down. For action movies, this is a classic film. However, we have not seen The Road Warrior in anything more that 480p since its original theatrical release. I will say right now - this Blu-Ray disk does the movie justice. The transfer is fantastic in both audio and video. When the camera is low to the pavement at 100mph, you can see the texture in the road. You can see the nasty, stringy hair on top Lord Humongous. When Max busts open the shotgun shell, you can see the individual grains of powder. This is a fantastic transfer of an action classic.
"The Last of the V8 Interceptors".......2007-07-19
Since I was a kid I loved this movie, the best villains (Lord Humungus), coolest car chase scenes ever, and the movie is down right raw... And now on Blu-Ray, things couldn't be better. Except for some more extra features and stuff, but all in all, 2 thumbs up.
An action classic in its full glory.......2007-07-06
The Road Warrior is a classic action film and the movie that first demonstrated what a star Mel Gibson would soon be. Filmed in Australia by George Miller, this sequel to their original film, Mad Max, is a post-apocalyptic demolition derby. It was created before the dawn of CGI, and all of it's stunts are for real, and breathtaking; particularly a stunt where one of the road predators is thrown end-over-end out of his crashed vehicle.
The Blu-ray version of the movie is brilliant, the film probably never looked as good in it's initial theatrical run. There is no comparison between the Blu-ray and DVD images. The colors and detail in this HD presentation are spectacular. There are moments in the film where the focus is somewhat soft on the edges, but I suspect this is a flaw in the principal photography and not the new transfer. The night time scenes in the middle of the film weren't a solid black, but had a little noise which I again attribute to the original negative, considering how good the rest of the film looks.
I definitely recomend this Blu-ray for any action movie fans and fans of this film series.

What happened to The 13th Warrior? Directed by John McTiernan (Die Hard), it's the tale of young Arab ambassador Ahmahd ibn Fahdalan (Antonio Banderas), who's vanquished from his homeland for loving the wrong woman. On his journeys he associates with a ragtag group of Vikings who are traveling back to their homeland to confront a nefarious threat that's cloaked in such superstition they're forbidden to speak its name. It is prophesied by a witch doctor that 13 warriors must confront the evil; however, the 13th chosen man must not come from the north. Suddenly Banderas is forced into the breach, somewhat against his will. More poet than battle-worn warrior, he must not only fight the aggressors but come to terms with the unfamiliar Norse culture. What follows is a vigorous and brutal adventure reminiscent of Kurosawa's Seven Samurai. Sumptuous and invigorating battle sequences fill the screen from beginning to end as the brave Norsemen battle insurmountable odds.
Sounds good. So why did this film, once known as the Eaters of the Dead, sit on studio shelves for two years? Presumably because of the thoughtless editing that trimmed down the film to its bare bones, crafting an actionfest out of an epic. It's not often that you crave for a movie to be longer, but The 13th Warrior could've benefited from fleshing out of its subplots and characters. On the surface it's good eye candy with some fine pulse-quickening moments, and Banderas and the accompanying cast turn in sympathetic performances, epitomizing camaraderie in the face of impending doom. However, if you're looking for a good thematic tale from the Dark Ages (akin to Braveheart), you may be disappointed. --Jeremy Storey

Customer Reviews:
Barely qualifies as Fantasy.......2007-08-10
I watched this movie because I wanted to see a fantasy story. To me fantasy means something that does not exist or has not been proven to exist in our world. I'm not sure that this movie qualifies at all. Its only claim to the genre is that it is yet another adaptation of the ancient story of Beowulf and Grendel. Some villages are under attack from a mysterious race of creatures called the Wendol, which seem to be half-human, half-bear. They quickly turn out to be just a tribe of cannibalistic cave-dwelling savages who wear bear skins to terrify and confuse their victims.
The movie stars Antonio Banderas as Ahmad ibn Fadlan, an Arab who was exiled from his homeland and meets up with a group of vikings lead by Buliwyf. Then they spend the rest of the movie fighting the Wendol, one battle after another. Some of them die, some of them survive but I couldn't bring myself to care about any of them. Ahmad ibn Fadlan was a real person who lived in the 10th century AD. This doesn't make the story any more interesting and just further dilutes fantasy aspect. Watch this movie if you like sword fights. The 13th Warrior has plenty.
The film is fun.......2007-07-27
The 13th Warrior is fun. The landscapes are sweeping, the northern village is entirely adequate, and the politics are personal. Any great messages? Beyond quests, swords & battles, and one's word, no. But the movie is highly enjoyable in the old Saturday afternoon at the movies style. Maybe mead ( or beer ) instead of popcorn, but hey.
It is of course based on Crichton's Eaters of the Dead, which in turn was based on Beowulf. The movie is seen through the eyes of a non Northerner who is brought along to rid a mead-hall of a curse, Grendal (loosely portrayed by a pack of Neanderthtals ), and the removal of Grendal's mother (loosely portrayed by a Goddess worshipping priesthood in decline). Perhaps this last bit is where so much objection comes to this movie. But this is just a movie, and may say more about Crichton's politics than anything else.
There is an early scene in the 13th Warrior of a Viking funeral, "in the old way", that appears well documented in the book The Buried Soul, by Timothy Taylor. Taylor is discussing the funeral as it was recorded by an Arab who was in the area at the time. That Crichton brought together the saga with the Arab account of the funeral works, and is an interesting take on history. Read Taylor's book, for the Viking funeral if nothing else.
This appears to be the origin of the "Lo, there do I see my father" prayer, although something similar is in Taylor's excellent book.
The 13th Warrior.......2007-07-21
I have watched this movie dozens of times. I like the action and charcters in the movie. The story line is good. Over all I liked the way the friendship developed between the characters. There was no mushy stuff, but good action and scenes.
A nice adaptation of 'Eaters of the Dead'.......2007-04-30
Far be it from me to quibble about the book Eaters of the Dead being better than its movie adaptation. However, I could easily have lived with a longer cut of this 'Beowulf epic'. Nevertheless, inspite of the evident & drastic culling of scenes, 'The 13th Warrior' remains a movie-goer's treat. Antonio Banderas continues to amaze me with his flair for subtle comedy. The rest of the cast too play their viking parts to near perfection. The action sequences and 'battle scenes' are down-to-the-earth raw (no CGI magic!), intelligently done, and immensely enjoyable. My recurring complaint being that the movie was about 30 minutes too short ...
Turn on your home-theater, kickback, relax, and enjoy the visuals for sheer entertainment value.
Set in a time long, long ago.......2007-04-16
I just watched this for the 2nd time to be sure. Simply the best Modern era, Viking type movie I have seen. Excellent story, good acting, action and a touch of realism with just enough movie effects. Well done cinematography and good, solid acting all around. Some nice attention to detail. I liked the "learning to speak the same language" and prayer sequence as well. These scenes are clever and very well done as examples. Tightly put together. An excellent tribute to the loosely, historical action / adventure films of the classic movie era. If you enjoy this you should probably see the 1958 (yes, way back to 58) movie The Vikings staring Kirk Douglas, Tony Curtis, Ernest Borgnine, and Janet Leigh. After that "a more distant maybe" the Long Ships. In any case, if you like good, rousing tales of yore type movies, you'll like this one.

A strong candidate for the designation of most thrilling action movie ever made (the turbo-charged exhilaration of its full-throttle highway chases has never been equaled), the second part of George Miller's post-apocalyptic trilogy is also a magnificently imagined movie myth. Like the Star Wars trilogy (by that other George) the Mad Max films draw their inspiration from the works of mythologist Joseph Campbell. In the 1979 original, Max (Mel Gibson) is a policeman, the last guardian of civilization and order in a devastated world reduced to chaos. But when a leather-clad gang of sadomasochistic speed demons mows down Max's family, his remaining connections to humanity are also permanently severed. After brutally exacting his revenge, Max wanders off into the wasteland alone, "a burned out shell of a man" who (to paraphrase The Searchers) is destined to wander forever between the winds. In The Road Warrior, Max rediscovers a sliver of his shattered humanity, and a spark of redemption, when he helps an embattled colony of pioneers fight off the savages who are after that most precious of all commodities: "guzzline." Max is transformed into a legendary hero, just as Mel Gibson was catapulted to international movie stardom. With its final stirring images, The Road Warrior transcends its genre (whatever that may be--science fiction? Western? action adventure?) and becomes something timeless. It's a great movie. --Jim Emerson
Customer Reviews:
Unique and Marvelous. .......2007-08-16
I first saw this movie over 20 years ago and didn't like it because I didn't like any of the characters. Flashforward two decades and I now like at least six of them. That tells you the way time builds human understanding. As a kid I assumed that the world was a good place, but now I know it to be equal parts good and evil. Few films showcase this eventuality more artfully and powerfully than the Road Warrior. This is an amazing production and I truly envy you if you've never seen it before.
The Road Warrior is both entertaining and deeply enlightening. There is more truth in its portrayal of human nature than a million self-help books and a hundred Hollywood movies. Civilization's veneer is thin. Without police and a government we would revert to shameful behaviors and attempt to survive by any means necessary. Max and the Gyro Captain are great but I still think that the feral boy character steals the spotlight from everyone else. The movie also tells us much about the nature of friendship along with the way we quickly bond with others in times of need. If you haven't seen it please do.
WOW.......2007-08-12
So it is the future and gasoline is like gold. Well this is obviously dated because when I fill up now I feel like I am paying a gold bar for a tank. Besides that, most of the places now do not allow you to pump and then pay, because so many people are stealing from the pumps. They call these "Driveoffs" and we need a guy like the one Gibson plays in this movie to chase them down!
The nice thing is in this movie is that on these roads you do not have to worry about a speed limit. So yeah, sorry peoples but the radar detector you just got would be worthless in this film.
The part that is not realistic is of course the roads themselves. C'mon peoples everywhere you go they are always having detours due to construction and road repair, in reality if this kind of thing played out, you would get a flat tire from all the potholes and debris that would fill up on the road over time. I mean really where are the streetsweepers? You have to be realistic even in a Science Fiction environment, but hey no problem, it is still good.
A fight to the death for gasoline.......2007-08-09
The second film of the trilogy is getting off the banality of the first one with its rape, infanticide and vengeance. Here we get to a world that is a real war to the death of one tribe against another and there is no law anywhere close. It is war for survival hence for the only thing that has some value in this desertic world where you can only move safely in motor vehicles, hence with gas. A fight for a tanker of gas, that's what the stake is. Mad Max gets on the side that controls the tanker in order to get gas for his car and he manages to serve them in a way and be accepted, though he tries to go away on his own when the service is finished. But he gets wrecked and has to be brought back by some accessory to the action who has some kind of unidentifiable flying object, some kind of ancestor of the chopper. So he will be the hero of the essential part of the film, the chase after the tanker. We will follow it with anxiety especially since a tanker like that is a bomb on wheels. The successive attacks against the tanker will be creative and some people will die on both sides and the driver will be seriously endangered by the attackers, to the point that he will not be able to avoid the final crash. And surprise, surprise, the tanker will not explode. The good old valueless gas had been transferred to the school bus in which the women were traveling. But the wreck of the tanker will incite the attackers, or what's left of them, to go away. Strangely enough they will not verify the content of the tanker and will not be able to think that the gas was somewhere else: these attackers are barbarians somewhere, hence they are intellectually retarded. And the final leg of the migration to safety could start and Mad Max could disappear in a mirage in the desert like some sand on a wind. Entertaining but in no way too intellectual: you will not get any nightmares nor headaches. Just funny after all. But that kind of chase will be imitated galore in the coming years after 1981. And that's probably one reason why it became cult: it was one of the very first films to work on the technique of shooting and editing such a chase.

Can you say "Peak Oil" boys and girls?.......2007-08-01
Hehehe I knew you could;-) Mad Max, when it came out in the states was seen as a post-nuclear war vision. One where the US and Russia wipe each other out, but the rest of the world just faces the economic collapse that the two superpowers war causes. The Australian perspective was more to do with the energy crunch of the Opec embargo, one that hit Australia very hard. Mad Max is more of a 'peak oil' series than a 'post nuclear' series.
And we are facing the beginnings of that dark future now. It could be 20 years, it could be tomorrow. Once the fuel prices spike high and stay that way, the panic it will cause will alone be enough to disrupt, possibly destroy civilization.
This is a movie that we should put back in theaters. Like the budget theaters that some cities/towns have. People will come for the action and Mel Gibson, then they'll remember the beginning and the end of this movie, the narrative.
The Road Warrior.......2007-07-10
Technically a sequel to Australian director George Miller's "Mad Max," this gripping, hyperkinetic sci-fi action film not only stands on its own, but actually throttles past its predecessor. Gibson, reprising his role as Max, is all nerve and bone as the rugged, laconic loner, and his visceral performance has star power written all over it. In supporting roles, Emil Minty is touching as Max's feral-child sidekick, while Kjell Nilsson is unforgettably fearsome as tribal leader Humungus. Miller's "Road Warrior" is one long adrenaline rush, epitomized in the climactic scene involving a band of crazed villains pursuing an oil tanker at breakneck speed.

Customer Reviews:
Great movie, but the "Ultimate" cut isn't so ultimate.......2007-08-23
I still think this movie is a classic, but allowing the director to change his vision 20-some years down the line resulted in a movie that is less than the original. The comic book scene transitions are jarring and yank you right out of the movie. Maybe this really is the movie he intended to make originally. I'm sure that if I'd seen this movie back then I would still have been impressed, but having seen the original cut I'm less than fond of the Ultimate Director's Cut. Luckily I still have my memories (and original DVD).
That said, the picture quality of this disc is obviously head-and-shoulders above that early DVD. I'm just afraid that the only time it'll be taken out of the cabinet and shown is when I want to rant about the disservice that was done to the movie by releasing this cut. Maybe "sometime in the future" there will be a HD release of the original.
Perfect video, but poor cut and sound!.......2007-08-10
The Blu Ray HD is pefect! Everything looks like you are on the scene. HD gives you the closet thing to a time machine! Very few movies actuall LOOK old in HD.
The bad part is, this "director's cut" sucks! They claim it was how he originally wanted it to be, but if that were true, he could have done it! There were no technology restrictions back then! All he did was butcher this film in an attempt to try an modernize it and make it look 'cool' for the young people of today while completely forgetting about those who grew up with the film!
This comic book transistions BS is a distraction while watching. It makes it look silly. I know the film on a whole (the gangs) look silly now, but you can deal with that on it's own without them trying to make it look as if they made it look silly on purpose. Also, many songs in the film run a lot longer and overlap dialog that was previously there! This is also distracting and takes away some of the suspense. They even totally edited out the end 'walk on the beach scene' and replaced it with a static comic strip! That alone ruined this 'cut.' That scene said alot. It represented the end, the end as in the Warriors are presumably going home and the end of the movie. It is also the memorable scene I recall of cabel all those years ago. These cuts were almost as bad as the Star Wars DVD's!
What they should do is to in clude the original intro which truly sets up the story. Forget that it took place in the daylight! They should alos include all deleted scens to give in some length and GET RID OF THE COMIC BOOK BS!
The sound is horrible! That is, the Dolby Digital. The center channel(dialog) disappears and the channels get crossed. You end up not being able to watch it in surround sound! I hope it is not my amp, but I have not had a problem up to this point. This sound is hard to deal with. If the channels were correct, it would be fine. I await the "director's orignal cut!"
Even better with Blu-Ray.......2007-07-22
This has always been one of my favorite movies. Now that I have it on Blu-Ray I'm thrilled. Even though this is an older movie, the video quality is outstanding. When I look at the detail on the leather jackets, I'm more than impressed, I'm amazed!
Great Transfer!.......2007-07-19
The movie itself is great, the video transfer is superb, a nice PCM track would have made this movie tops!
Awesome Experience!.......2007-07-17
Popped this baby into my Samsung BD-P1000, cranked up the sound on my yamaha and had a great time! This is one of the best popcorn movies ever made! The Blu-ray version looks better than any version I've seen and the sound quality was great too. It was great seeing this movie in high-def. Definately a welcome addition to my collection!
Just another reason to be happy I went with Blu-ray!
