With the knockout one-two punch of 1992's Reservoir Dogs and 1994's Pulp Fiction writer-director Quentin Tarantino stunned the filmmaking world, exploding into prominence as a cinematic heavyweight contender. But Pulp Fiction was more than just the follow-up to an impressive first feature, or the winner of the Palme d'Or at Cannes Film Festival, or a script stuffed with the sort of juicy bubblegum dialogue actors just love to chew, or the vehicle that reestablished John Travolta on the A-list, or the relatively low-budget ($8 million) independent showcase for an ultrahip mixture of established marquee names and rising stars from the indie scene (among them Samuel L. Jackson, Uma Thurman, Bruce Willis, Ving Rhames, Harvey Keitel, Christopher Walken, Tim Roth, Amanda Plummer, Julia Sweeney, Kathy Griffin, and Phil Lamar). It was more, even, than an unprecedented $100-million-plus hit for indie distributor Miramax. Pulp Fiction was a sensation. No, it was not the Second Coming (I actually think Reservoir Dogs is a more substantial film; and P.T. Anderson outdid Tarantino in 1997 by making his directorial debut with two even more mature and accomplished pictures, Hard Eight and Boogie Nights). But Pulp Fiction packs so much energy and invention into telling its nonchronologically interwoven short stories (all about temptation, corruption, and redemption amongst modern criminals, large and small) it leaves viewers both exhilarated and exhausted--hearts racing and knuckles white from the ride. (Oh, and the infectious, surf-guitar-based soundtrack is tastier than a Royale with Cheese.) --Jim Emerson

5 out of 5 stars So cool........2007-09-02

Pulp Fiction is still raw, captivating, and completely mindblowing to this day. This is the only Quentin Taritino film that I truly adore, the whole cast are at their best here especially John Travolta, Samuel L. Jackson, Uma Thurman, and Bruce Willis. If you love a long and complicated film then Pulp Fiction is for you. I highly recommend it. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars My Favorite Movie of all-time!.......2007-08-19

I myself have had the pleaure of watching many great movies such as Shawshank Redemption, the Godfather 1 and 2. Etc..

But this movie was just that much better, at least in my opinion. The role of Jules Winnifield played by Samuel L Jackson was just brilliant. Bets character in the movie. I just loved this film. It's a film you actually have to watch twice to fully understand, I love movies that make you think and still have action and funny at the same time. Great cast as well...just an amazing move.

5 out of 5 stars One of the greatest movies of all time- no questions asked.......2007-08-19

Like any great work of art, it can be a bit difficult to write about a movie like Pulp Fiction. The movie has a kind of logic, an attitude, and a style all its own, a feel that simply doesn't exist in any other movie (not one that I've seen, anyway). It's hard to sum up exactly what's so incredible about it; sure, I could go on and on about the mouthwatering performances (seriously, is this cast a dream team or what?), the twisting mindbender of a plot, the jaw-dropping dialogue, the one-of-a-kind characters, or the instantly evocative set pieces, but there's more to it than just that. The movie is, in the truest sense of the phrase, so much more than the sum of its parts. Pulp Fiction is a world unto itself, a fantasy universe in which the most tantalizingly filthy aspects of American culture are transformed into high art. It's a world in which comic books, dime novels, gangster films, and surf music 45s are every bit as evocative and compelling as the works of Shakespeare or Da Vinci (seriously, I'm not exaggerating. This movie really has moved me to the same ecstatic heights that I reached after reading Hamlet for the first time). It's a movie that wraps you around its finger from the unforgettable opening scene and holds on to you until- well, it still hasn't let go of me. There simply aren't any bad scenes in this movie. Not a single line of dialogue that doesn't work. There isn't one lousy shot out of place, not a single moment that I seems like it can be improved. Now, I rarely fawn over anything the way I'm praising this movie right now, but then again, I've rarely ever experienced anything like this movie. It defies categorization. It's an absolute masterpiece. Get it. Watch it. Please!

5 out of 5 stars You know what they call a cheesy review in Paris? A review with Cheese.......2007-08-19

This film is all about dialogue, I know what your saying, Check out the big brain on Mike, I'm a smart mother father. This movie had me wanting to walk the earth, you know, walk the earth, meet people... get into adventures. Like Caine from "Kung Fu", just so i could get into conversations and practice dialogue such as this.
Of course, not all conversations are gonna go smoothly like in Pulp Fiction and there are going to be ignorant people who get angry and are ready to blow, to them i say. "Oh! Oh! You ready to blow?" Well, I'm a mushroom-cloud-layin' motherflower, motherflower! , I'm Superfly T.N.T., I'm the Guns of the Navarone!
You probably came into this review thinking here comes another plot synopsis, usually, most readers would be happy with some freeze-dried reviewers choice, but Mike springs this serious GOURMET shiznit on us!
A lot of movies try to be clever but aren't in the same ballpark as Tarantino's Pulp Fiction, it ain't the same league, it ain't even the same F'in sport.
So finally in closing I'd like to exuberantly add, mmmmmm this is a tasty movie, if it's ever on television check it out sometime. Actually if you haven't seen it yet, I don't wanna hear about no mf ing ifs. All I wanna hear from your anus is, You ain't got no problems, Mike. I'm on the mother-father. Go back online, order Pulp Fiction, and wait for the dvd, which should be coming directly.

2 out of 5 stars A staple in 90's film making; no wonder no one remembers the 90's.......2007-08-15

"Greatest movie ever, dude." "Aw, man, every bit of dialogue is instantly classic."

I watched Pulp Fiction again recently for the first time in years, a time in which I was a fairly large hater of Quentin's unoriginality and undeserved praise, but then one day, I was at a used DVD store and picked up Reservoir Dogs and this on a whim.

They were both as I remembered them being the last time I saw them; fairly useless, utterly unoriginal in every aspect and full of gimmicks to make up for lack of film making talent.

So, Pulp Fiction, some claim this as THE greatest film of the 90's, but I'm sure these are the same people who turn up their nose at anything in black and white, love Chuck Palahniuk and think House is a witty show.

Is it truly one of the greatest movies of all time? Absolutely, positively not, not even close, taking into consideration all of the films made, well, in the history of cinema, this doesn't even belong on a top 500, let alone to stand at number, I think, 3 on the IMDb top 250 (which is a joke of a list anyways.)

The dialogue is cute at first, clever in parts, but overall, and after 2 and a half hours, it shines through for what it really is; the soul of the film, and it's a fairly bland, repetative soul at that. Tarantino thinks he can write fantastic dialogue, he's under the impression that he can catch people being real; well, unfortunately, he can't.

Where Godard was revolutionary, Tarantino is just rehashing, I won't say strealing which is what he does but I'll be generous, old ideas. The Uma Thurman's drawing of a square and it appearing on the screen was so tacky it was almost sickening.

Writer/director Quentin Tarantino (Academy Award(R)-winner -- Best Original Screenplay) delivers an unforgettable cast of characters -- including a pair of low-rent hit men (John Travolta and Samuel L. Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars My top 5 Favorites!.......2006-08-15

This movie is the pinnacle of excellent movie making. While Quentin Tarantino stays in my mind as one of the strangest individuals in the entertainment business after perhaps Crispin Glover and Michael Jackson, I think his ability to creat a cinematic masterpiece is of the highest level.

This movie stands as one of the greatest movies of all time. The intertwining of movie making and storyline are what make this movie so wonderful! Casting was top notch, as well as makeup and costume design. I liked watching the movie, not being sure if I was watching mid-80's or present time. For the record this movie came out in 1992.

I think Samuel L. Jackson deserved an oscar nomination for this one. It was phenomenal watching him on the big screen, especially during the shootout in the apartment. I also very much enjoyed the dialogue between him and John Travolta, especially before the shooting, as they are waiting to enter the apartment.

I give this high marks, and hope that others will take the time to watch this wonderful movie.

Two thumbs up! MC White says check it out!!!

2 out of 5 stars PSP Technical Review - A Real Dissapointment.......2005-09-22

After 10 years, 'Pulp Fiction' still holds up as an absolute classic, and thankfully Beuna Vista/Miramax have released this gem on PSP for all us to enjoy.

How does it rate.....well, not so good I'm afraid.

Picture:
Like Kill Bill Vol 1+2, the picture is nice and sharp, and in it's Original Aspect ratio of 2:35. The black levels are a little mirky and lack that blackness of say Sin City, but still holds up well. A little desaturated on UMD, but i guess, so was the original film.

Score: 3/5

Audio:
This is where it falls to pieces. Basically, it stinks. A terrible audio presentation that begins and ends on the lowest volume I've experienced on any UMD. Even with the UMD volume set to +2 and on maximum, it's no-where near what it should be. It's trouble with the mastering. It's lacking on both the high ends and low ends. Lacking sharpness in the gushots that usually scare the hell out of me at the start, to the bass and richness of the infamous soundtrack...it lacks all.

Score: 1/5

Extras:
None, zilch, even the terrible menus were ripped straight from the DVD.

Score: 1/5

Overall:
One of my fav films, and one i was looking forward to all month, is below scratch. Not to say that it's unwatchable, just don't expect anything near great. Very bad Beuna Vista, very bad indeed.

Score: 2/5

5 out of 5 stars Impossible to forget!.......2005-09-15

Tarantino really makes his space in the director chair with this movie. Starting with the great cast, Uma Thurman, Bruce Willis, Samuel L. Jackson, John Travolta and more. Tarantino's amazing screen display, as well as an original plot makes this an amazing movie. From the beggining, to the end and beginning again(you'll get i't) you'll be blown by this movie. It mixes a lot of genres and the divisions of chapters and stories makes it really good for the trama. Really good movie and for the psp even better!!

Product Description

The artwork found on pulp fiction magazine covers has rankled American sensibilities since before your grandparents time. Now for the first time on film, Pulp Fiction Art: Cheap Thrills & Painted Nightmares takes an in-depth look at these incredible yet misunderstood works of art; some of which, due to their controversial content, are rarely seen in public today.

Pulp fiction art is more than simply an American art form; it is a state of mind. Politically incorrect, shocking, offensive and deliciously fun, it is unforgettable.

Pulp Fiction Art: Cheap Thrills & Painted Nightmares takes you behind the scenes of this forgotten art form with interviews of the artists who created these sinfully entertaining paintings and the collectors who have kept it alive. Winner of the 2006 Best Documentary award at both the Dragon*Con Film Festival and The International Horror and Sci-Fi Film Festival, documentary filmmaker Jamie McDonald gained exclusive access to the world s largest pulp art collection - owned by pulp art historian Robert Lesser. Whether you are a true fan of the art form or a curious newcomer, Pulp Fiction Art: Cheap Thrills & Painted Nightmares will leave you thinking differently about what constitutes true art

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Only in America.......2007-06-27

This is a fabulous documentary about a very appealing - to me, at least - American art genre, pulp illustration, which combined highly accomplished craftsmanship with tremendous imagination in what were often (certainly in the sci fi area) ground-breaking images. The artists were as good as anyone who made their living painting; many of those discussed in this film, Frank Paul, Rafael deSoto, Virgil Finlay, Hannes Bok, Margaret Brundage, rank as the best illustrators of all time. As Frank Frazetta was for Conan, J, Allen St.John for Burroughs, Jno. O'Neill for Frank Baum, so were these artists perfectly suited to the lurid adventure and sex of the pulps.

Weird Tales! Planet Stories! The Spicy mags! Margaret Brundage! An Oak Park, Illinois housewife, she created the most sensuous, rich, savage images dripping with sexuality. Died in near poverty, poor lady, and now her works (if they can be found) would sell for many tens of thousands of dollars. Frank Paul: not the greatest at drawing people, nevertheless his colors and monsters explode off the covers, psychedelia way before its time.

Robert Lesser, king of pulp art (and space toy) collectors, is featured throughout. Excellent film, very comprehensive given its length, recommend highly though I really don't need the competition in acquiring the magazines it may provoke. Still, I'm out of wall space.

5 out of 5 stars Kei Mizutani's Terminatrix is a Terminator.......2007-04-08

A take off of "The Terminator" featuring Kei Mizutani. James Cameron's original version of this flick featuring Arnold Schwarzenegger has nothing to fear from this cheap rip-off. Though the genius of Cameron who at only age 27 made "The Terminator" there are many people in this world who would prefer to watch Kei in "The Teminatrix" as opposed to Schwarzeneggar but who can blame them. Kei is absolutely beautiful although she can't act and lacks personality I prefer her over Arnold. This film is definitely one of her hottest commercial features. Also keep in mind that this film is called "Insatsu no Toriko(Slave To Dirty Killing) in Japan.

4 out of 5 stars Surprising.......2001-12-27

This is a soft core parody of the Terminator series that works well on several levels. The hook is that a pleasure robot was sent into the past to make a rebel's father impotent, there by causing her never to exist.
The portrayal of the rebel sent back to counteract the Terminatrix is done with a sense of humor. She is largely ineffective and finds her main problem being a fashion crisis that must be remedied before she can actually be effective. She winds up on the wrong side of the law as she has to constantly mug stray women for their clothing, and at times her choices cause far more problems than they solve.
The acting is as good as can be expected in a feature with this sort of limited budget. The facial expression are hysterical and not overblown, the English language translation seems right on the mark.
This DVD far exceeded my expectations. There are moments of extreme "South Park" style humor that really can't be mentioned in a public forum, but which shame their US counterparts by showing that this sort of feature can be done well.

i ordered five movies , all classics and they arrived on time and intact . they were a gift to my dear brother and he loves them .

5 out of 5 stars A Wild Ride!.......2006-11-01

After 12 years, I finally got around to seeing this one. I never figured my wife would enjoy it, but my stepson had it on DVD. What a wild ride, with career rescuing or career establishing performances by John Travolta and Samuel L. Jackson. Uma Thurman, Bruce Willis and Harvey Keitel, among others, add to the bloody, profane fun. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Pulp Fiction.......2006-10-02

Excellent movie!!! I did not see this movie when it came out in the theaters originally back in 1994. About a year ago, I saw it in the 4:3 format...was not really impressed. Recently, I saw the DVD version, WIDESCREEN format. Thouroghly enjoyed it...the movie, the direction, editing, sound track, acting, & so forth. Unique movie, both in content & style. Now I own the movie as well as the "sound track" CD...must for any movie buff.

5 out of 5 stars Superceding all the norms!.......2006-06-01

Sadly, too many people remain close-minded about the many experimental facets available in film-making. Despite my age, I have found this movie to be extraordinarily unique, having opened an entirely new genre in films. Hitchcock would have been proud to have seen Tarentino's trend-setting motif, and the many doors his insight has opened. Shame on those that can't see beyond the "Hollywood-ness", and experience the joy of a new dimension within films. Not all good movies rely on special effects to draw an audience. Tarentino has proven that...superbly. Hostel was every bit as riveting, and I highly recommend that movie...unless you are a prude and unable to accept the graphic subject matter covered. But all open-minded viewers will love Hostel every bit as much as Pulp Fiction.

1 out of 5 stars Worst movie ever.......2006-05-31

This is by far the worst movie I've ever seen. It jumps around to the point that it makes no sense, is boring, has horrible characters, even worse acting.. basically every bad thing that a movie could be.. this one is. Don't waste any money on this trash. The only reason I'm rating it as 1 star is because there is no option for 0 stars.
