Great movie.......2007-09-09

A great movie being made available in it's finest presentation.

I am a high def enthusiast and love watching everything I can in HD. I chose the HD DVD format for it's price, picture, interactivity, and the fact that players can be upgraded via the ethernet port.

All these Blu Ray babies crying, really need to get a life. Paramount, Dreamworks seen the light and seen that there are 3 to 1 HD DVD players over Blu Ray players in American households. Consumers are going to buy what is affordable and movie studios are going to go where they can make the most profit. Also, it is more profitable to make an HD DVD disc over a Blu Ray disc, as HD DVD uses similar technolgy shared with DVD.

It's been noted that the BD Java code needed to write Blu Ray disc is alot more complicated than the Microsoft HDi code used to writing HD DVD. In turn it makes HD DVD have much more features and come out with less bugs than Blu Ray. This makes HD DVD more profitable for the simple reason that studios don't have to pay programers to learn a new code for making movies.

Plus do you really think that Sony didn't grease Disney's pocket to go exclusive with Blu Ray?

Bottom line is technology is made for consumers and Sony has always tried to make it proprietary for them. Examples, mini disc, umd, memory stick, betamax, atrac3 (music format) and blu ray. Look at all the failed formats Sony has tried to push onto consumers that have all failed. Did you really think it would be different with Blu Ray?

I am so looking forward to this video... even re-bought aviator sunglasses and was quoting top gun quite a bit recently. I really need to be in a top gun support group... if you are on myspace search for the top gun support group and u'd know what i mean.

Bad move by Paramount to drop Blu-ray for HD-DVD. I hope they wise up and get back to Blu-ray quicker than 18 months and drop the desperate bribing HD-DVD format. Idiots!

To the person who uses a review feature to complain about Paramount dropping Blu-Ray -- GROW UP! Go complain to Fox, Disney and Sony for not supporting HD DVD, or stop being a complete hypocrite! Sony is the one that brought on this fiasco of a format war, trying to strong-arm the consumer into their overpriced technology. Go cry somewhere else.

Better yet, go play with your PS3. Oh, I forget, Sony forgot to develop any decent games for it.

Description

In TOP GUN, Tom Cruise stars as Maverick, a talented training pilot in an elite U.S. school for fighter pilots. When he stumbles upon some MiG's over the Persian Gulf, and his wingman panics, Maverick cleverly talks him through the situation to safety. Consequently, he is moved up in rank and sent to the Top Gun Naval Flying School. There he has several conflicts with other students while trying to live up to his deceased father's reputation. Unable to cope with the death of his best friend, and fellow pilot, Goose, Maverick contemplates dropping out, but follows through with his dream and ultimately becomes one of the "best of the best."

Iceman, Maverick and Slider: while they make great names for members of a tracksuit wearing boy band, they make even better names for shirtless, pretty boy pilots! And Tom Cruise is the prettiest and shirtless-liest of them all as Maverick, a bad boy aviator who lock horns with the large-toothed Iceman (Val "The Island of Dr. Moreau" Kilmer) and locks other things with the saucy MIT-educated Naval consultant Charlie (Kelly "Supergator" McGillis). And if you're a fan of music that is likely to be heard in an aerobics class, you'll love the pulse-pounding soundtrack by disco top gun Giorgio Moroder! For this RiffTrax, Mike flies high with his Mystery Science wingman, Bill Corbett. It will literally "take your breath away"!*

Aspen Extreme, better than average.......2007-04-06

Being that I am a Skier I guess I am more predisposed to liking this movie. But, that said, there is more here than just skiing. We get multiple stories woven into the thread of the Movie. It's one part buddy Movie, and one part guy gets girl, loses girl, gets girl again. Then add a Warren Miller element because the skiing in the Movie is good, really good. I would recommend this Movie as a very good Movie. I have heard some describe it as a great movie. I don't buy into that, but it is worth viewing and I have a hard time seeing how it will disappoint if you go into it just wanting to see a good movie.

One of the best 80's ski films out there!.......2006-03-18

If you love to ski or snowboard (especially if you love the 80's) you must see this film. It pretty much (along with Hot Dog!) defines the 80's ski scene. Great stunts, good story line and awesome clothes and soundtrack make this the perfect film to enjoy watching after a long day on the slopes (drink in hand of course!).

I watched this movie thinking it would be some shallow t&a movie- but one with great ski sequences (which I why i thought it worth a look). How wrong I was!

Aspen Extreme is one of the rare films about male friendship that gets its right.

It portrays, as few films do, how a close male friend can simultaneously be your emotional anchor and greatest competitor. Dexter and TJ ( the main characters) have that complexity and paul gross and peter berg are great actors- you actually believe they are lifelong friends who need each other, even while they know they may be going in different directions as they get older.

The ski sequences are excellent and teri polo shows why she should have become a major star a decade ago (if there was any justice in the world)

the only negative- fiona hughes was too one dimensional and not on par with the three leads- you never once get the feeling this person is a successful businesswoman!

the plot twist towards the end is a little shocking- but moving and effective.

Aspen Extreme....Life Unforgiving.......2005-06-05

"Dexter Rutecki lived a life that was short and funny and sad and hard and good. Most of the time it was good. It was good the day he died. The snow was deep and pure white. The sun high and cold. He was my best friend."

This film, while some will cry "Predictable", is entirely watchable and utterly enjoyable, almost to the point of sin. Granted, it's not "Chicago", "Phantom of the Opera" (2004 version), "Dances with Wolves", or "Titanic". However, it is certainly not cutting room floor crap either, and WAY better than "Hot Dog" because it doesn't rely on nudity to sell the story. Come to think of it, that's probably why the film wasn't a smash at the box office. YES! That's it! I'm sure of it! No nudity, that remains this film's fatal fault for the vast majority of America.

As for me, this film deals with far more human issues than simply throwing the odd breast on the screen to drawn in crowds. No, this film deals with two friends desire to attain success together (and not in that way).

This is an overall good film if one can manage to see the issues at hand. A man's climb to the top, the value of friendship, and the horror when your world comes crashing down. Then, yes, there is death, remorse, and dealing with all of those feelings in a way that leaves you among the living.

Predictable, yes, but if it wasn't it would either be "too real life" or "depressing". So what if it's predictable. That is why we see films. We watch to either be happy, or sad, or vindicated. Predictability is a good thing. If it wasn't, you'd take your date to what was supposed to be a "chick flick" and need a ride home at the end.

Bravo for predictability and Bravo for Aspen Extreme. It's a fine film and a guilty pleasure sure to be watched countless times over.

Lot's of skiing, women that were hot in the nineties, and a little bit of cheese combine to make this the best drama of all time for skiiers. This movie teaches essential survival skills like exactly how to handle a French jackass ski-instructor if he ever blames you for stealing his heli-ski clients. What you do is offer to split the tip with them, then when he says with his french accent, "I don wan to split de tip", just slam your ski locker in his face and come up with an extremly witty comment, then call him an azzhole as you walk away.....brilliant!!
Also, what do you do when you've been invited up to the mansion of a European lady with enormous teeth and you search the whole house for her, only to find her her in the indoor swimming pool wearing nothing but the fur under her arms? When she asks if you swim you answer, "like a fish" and whatever you do don't take your clothes off. This would take too much time. Just kick off your high-tops that aren't laced at the top and dive in. When you come to the surface of the water, the hair flip to get water out of your face must be perfect or she may not invite you to stay the night. PERFECT!!
I look at Aspen Extreme more as an instructional video for these situations. Thanks TJ & Dex, because of you I now live in my van and life is sweet.
I'm kidding about all of this but it still is my favorite ski flick for sure.

Parental Caution: Nudity Surprise.......2007-04-10

We purchased this set and checked the ratings for viewing by our children. Don't let the PG rating fool you into thinking "Airplane" is okay for kids!!! My 9-year-old had the surprise of his life (as did I!) when a nude woman crossed the screen. Took days to wipe the smile off his face. Now his brother wants to watch...

Continuity from Bush Senior to Bush Junior.......2007-08-20

This is an old film that came out in 1994. It was direct propaganda from the Democrats against the Republicans and Bush Senior who had been defeated by Clinton in 1992. As such it revealed the very obscure and twisted policies the United States of Reagan and Bush Senior had had towards Iraq, Iran, Israel and the Middle East in general, not to speak of the world. But what meaning can it have in 2007? In retrospect it shows how the US produced their own enemy and made him as strong as strong could be, how they helped him embezzle enormous sums of money in order to pay for some armament projects that were totally out of proportion but very good for business. And then they had to have a first war to force him out of Kuwait, and then they decided to have a second war to oust him out of power. And they had to lie to the whole world to justify their unilateral decision to invade Iraq. And that war that was supposed to be a joyride because they knew there were no Weapons of Mass Destruction and hence the Iraqis could not resist them, has turned into a nightmare and a quagmire that is swallowing the US like a quicksand trap in the middle of their only way. The Indians and Sinhalas have an interested saying about how an elephant cannot escape from drowning in a pool of mud as soon as they have dipped their first foot in it. If the film demonstrates something it is that when you lie, when you embezzle, when you manipulate people or events or circumstances or whatever, sooner or later you have to pay the bill and foot the expenses. Unluckily the price is paid by the Americans first of all, then by the Iraqis particularly the civilians, and finally by the whole world that is forced into dangerous situations that could and should have been avoided. This film's meaning has completely changed from 1994 with Bush Senior as its intended target to Bush Junior as an unintended circumstantial target. But one element is still true and unchanged: the US have been fishing in very muddy waters over the last twenty years or so and the price to pay will be unimaginably high for everyone.

I WAS AWARE OF BITS AND PIECES OF THIS STORY SO I WAS INTERESTED IN SEEING THE WHOLE STORY. THE LATTER WAS WELL TOLD FOR THE TIME AVAILABLE. I ESPECIALLY ENJOYED THE INSIGHTS INTO HOW THE MAN THOUGHT. I WOULD THINK THE FILM WOULD HAVE A LIMITED AUDIENCE; MAINLY PHYSICISTS OR ENGINEERS.

Amateurish.......2006-11-15

This film is proof that an excellent cast cannot rise above inferior scriptwriting, directing and editing. Most scenes of this movie struggle against a script that sacrifices character development to the conveying of information. Mercifully, this is most blatant in the first 10 minutes of the movie in which choppy editing jerks the audience from scene to scene in a series of pogo jumps that instruct us on the childhood aspirations and early professional career of the protagonist, Gerald Bull. The ticker tape of facts continues through what must be the most leaden performance of Kevin Spacey's filmography, as he intones yet more information needed to convince the viewer that this is surely a very exciting film. Add to this the director's dispiriting decisions to have Arab characters speak to each other in English, and to have pivotal moments preceded far in advance by crescendos from the orchestra, and we can only be thankful that the flim provides, at the very least, a useful history lesson.

espionage..and the merchants of death.......2006-09-19

watch this movie closely..It will show you all you need to know of the world of international espionage and those who play the great old game...This Movie truly expains how enemies are not really all that bad and how ones friend can be the monster lurking in the shadows..In my opinion the movies highlights the closing heyday of the Reagan-Bush international crusades and how the foot soldiers in the Intelligence field work ferverishly to fufill their masters agenda....And how a goverment can use, abuse, discredit and discard you if you refuse to play the game their way..This movie had a great cast, and was a real diamond in the rough. It has 2 parts.It highlights the genius of Gerald Bull,, and shows the darkside of a political agenda..

Here's to the engineers.......2005-08-23

As an engineer's son, I have never seen a better portrayal of an engineer's enthusiasm for new problems and new challenges. In one unforgettable scene, Frank Langella brought to the screen for the first time in my opinion what can only be called, "the-joy-of-development."

Too often films that deal with invention focus on that moment when the problem comes together and is solved. What they fail to recognize is the first step, when the men and women are looking at the challenge ahead, has even more emotional potential.

Thankfully the writers and actors in this film did not forget this human truth.

The cast is excellent. The script is uneven, but the only reason this is obvious is because instead of staying mildly good throughout, like most made for cable films, this movie is mildly good with occasional scenes of brilliance; such as almost any moment what Langella or Spacey grace the screen.

If you are an engineer or just have one as a friend or member of the family, see this film. It's a wonder.

Interesting Prespective on Aircraft Carriers.......2007-06-12

I live in Hawaii overlooking Pearl Harbor. Needless to say, I see aircraft carriers on a regular basis. Over the years I've had the opportunity to get "personal" tours on at least ten different carriers . . . by "personal" I mean one-on-one tours with a sailor assigned on the ship, a much more in-depth tour than tours open to the general public which usually include only the flight deck and hanger deck. This DVD gives you much the same "feel" as a "personal" tour. With this DVD, you can get a true look at the people manning these magificant ships as well as their families. Although I've seen them many times, I still stand in awe of of their size and power.

Well Worth it For Kids!.......2002-11-19

WOW ALL FLYING!!! I bought this for my 4 yr. old for x-mas. After purchasing Top-Gun, I noticed he only liked the flying scenes... Well, when it arrived, of course I had to PREVIEW it (like Santa would do! hehehe!). I was very pleased to see ALL FLYING, very good views, and alot of action. I was only displeased at the soundtrack. But I heard all of it to make this review, (I'll turn on my Cd-player in the background when he watches it.) The editing, and cut away shots don't match up enouph for a "perfectionist" adult dvd'ist like myself. But I know my little boy will Love me for it! MERRY X-MAS Son! I'm sure all kids that like flying would enjoy this more than any Documentary style Dvd!

I bought this for my 4 yr. old for x-mas. After purchasing Top-Gun, I noticed he only liked the flying scenes... Well, when it arrived, of course I had to PREVIEW it (like Santa would do! hehehe!). I was very pleased to see ALL FLYING, very good views, and alot of action. I was only displeased at the soundtrack. But I heard all of it to make this review, Uhgg! I'll know to turn on my Cd-player in the background when he watches it. The editing, and cut away shots dont match up enouph for a serious adult dvd. But i know my little boy will Love me for it! MERRY X-MAS Son!

The DVD offers some of the best fighter jet scenes I had ever seen. All of the new state-of-the-art aircraft were featured in the video. From the new European fighters, to the newest Mig, to the advanced F-22 Raptor.

I was expecting a documentary style feature, but instead they are multiple scenes of the aircraft, and music playing in the background. The music was mostly 80's rock, and seem pretty boring to me. However, I didn't mind the music because the angles in which the aircraft were captured were pretty amazing.

If you expect to learn something from this video, try looking at Wings. Not a word is mentioned here, except for a few pilot chatter, otherwise is just aircraft and music.

This DVD is excellent. Nothing but flying. It shows many of the worlds fighters in flight, weapon tests and other footage. It's very cheap and the footage is amazing. No commentary just pure flight. I have watched it about 50 times and enjoy it every time. My only complaints are it's a little short [But then look at the price and length of the average Imax film.] The music is a little annoying. But for the price it is worth it.

Piture is good but duplicating again and again.......2000-10-14

The picture qulity is really good and sound as well, but too many scenes are duplicated again and again, as many as 5 times for some segments.
