"Remember, remember the fifth of November," for on this day, in 2020, the minds of the masses shall be set free. So says code-name V (Hugo Weaving), a man on a mission to shake society out of its blank complacent stares in the film V For Vendetta. His tactics, however, are a bit revolutionary to say the least. The world in which V lives is very similar to Orwell's totalitarian dystopia in 1984: after years of various wars, England is now under "big brother" Chancellor Adam Sutler (played by John Hurt, who ironically played Winston Smith in the movie 1984) whose party uses force and fear to run the nation. After gaining power, minorities and political dissenters were rounded up and removed; artistic and unacceptable religious works were confiscated. Cameras and microphones are littered throughout the land, and the people are perpetually sedated through the governmentally controlled media. Taking inspiration from Guy Fawkes, the 17th century co-conspirator of a failed attempt to blow up Parliament on November 5, 1605, V dons a Fawkes mask and costume and sets off to wake the masses by destroying the symbols of their oppressors, literally and figuratively. At the beginning of his vendetta, V rescues Evey (Natalie Portman) from a group of police officers and has her live with him in his underworld lair. It is through their relationship where we learn how V became V, the extremities of the party's corruption, the problems of an oppressive government, V's revenge plot and his philosophy on how to induce change.
Based on the popular graphic novel by Alan Moore, V For Vendetta's screenplay was written by the Wachowski Brothers (of The Matrix fame) and directed by their protégé, James McTeigue. Controversy and criticism followed the film since its inception, from the hyper-stylized use of anarchistic terrorism to overthrow a corrupt government and the blatant jabs at the current US political arena, to graphic novel fans complaining about the reconstruction of Alan Moore's original vision (Moore himself has dismissed the film). Many are valid critiques and opinions, but there's no hiding the message the film is trying to express: Radical and drastic events often need to occur in order to shake people out of their state of indifference in order to bring about real change. Unfortunately, the movie only offers a means with no ends, and those looking for answers may find the film stylish, but a bit empty. --Rob Bracco

Standing on its own I thought it was a fantastic movie........2007-09-12
This is one of my favorite all time movies. Its not designed for children as it doesnt contain that kind of hero. I cant think of any other movie so loved and hated at the same time! Politics aside I thought it was a very good movie and without a doubt is different then all the other movies out there. I can understand why people can hate this movie based on todays political environment but I feel its unjustified. This is a movie that will last the test of time and will be considered one of the greats 10 years from now.

George Orwell, 1984, Alan Moore, and V.......2007-09-10
I read the graphic novel of "V for Vendetta" when it was originally released in the mid 1980s. Right from the beginning, I could see that this was Alan Moore's homage to Orwell and "1984" - he was most likely inspired by the book as the title's date approached and Moore observed Thatcher's England and Reagan's America unfold. What an amazing story "V for Vendetta" told. Alan Moore saw that Fascism was still alive and well in the world of 1984 as it was in Orwell's Post WWII 1940s.
Jump forward 20 years, and we have a retelling of this amazing story, but this time on film instead of the comic panel. In this day and age of Terrorism, the fear of Terrorism, and the Fascist use of that fear, the story is more important than ever in Bush's America/World. Fear is the most powerful tool of the fascist as has been demonstrated in both the real world - Nazi Germany and Post 9/11 America - and in fiction - "1984" and "V for Vendetta". "V for Vendetta" capture's this by potraying a not-to-distant future where plague and terrorism have crippled the world and are cooped by the fearful conservative right (where all fascism is born as they are similar psychoses) to control the masses and "protect" the people.
Though Moore set "V" in his native England, 20 years after its writing it could have been set in Post 9/11 America where even treehugging is consider terrorism by the ruling administration. Yes, this film portrays a terrorist as the "good guy", but it actually delves deeper into the heart of all of us; and it challenges every one of us to stand up for ourselves BEFORE we would need to resort to acts of violence to safeguard our freedoms - or worse have to reclaim them. Watch this film to be inspired for what we have to loose, before it becomes what we have lost.
A final note on Alan Moore not endorsing the film...Moore doesn't endorse any of his works being made into film. But, I would like to think that he will see it and see his vision properly realized; this is what I saw in the film...his vision on screen (though I was disappointed that the musical numbers found in the graphic novel were missing!). With this film, I await "The Watchmen" even more.

Very few films come close to the brilliance Kenneth Branagh achieved with his first foray into screenwriting and direction. Henry V qualifies as a masterpiece, the kind of film that comes along once in a decade. He eschews the theatricality of Laurence Olivier's stirring, fondly remembered 1945 adaptation to establish his own rules. Branagh plays it down and dirty, seeing the bard's play through revisionist eyes, framing it as an antiwar story. Branagh gives us harsh close-ups of muddied, bloody men, and close-ups of himself as Henry, his hardened mouth and willful eyes revealing much about this land war. Not that the director-star doesn't provide lighter moments. His scenes introducing the French Princess Katherine (Emma Thompson) are toothsome. Bubbly, funny, enhanced by lovely lighting and Thompson's pale beauty, these glimpses of a princess trying to learn English quickly from her maid are delightful.
What may be the crowning glory of Branagh's adaptation comes when the dazed, shaky leader wanders through battlefields, not even sure who has won. As King Hal carries a dead boy (Empire of the Sun's Christian Bale) over the hacked-up bodies of both the English and French, you realize it is the first time Branagh has opened up the scenes: a panorama of blood and mud and death. It is as strong a statement against warmongering as could ever be made. --Rochelle O'Gorman
Description
He ruled a massive empire...and fought a mighty war! Kenneth Branagh, Paul Scofield, Derek Jacobi, Ian Holm, Emma Thompson and Judi Dench star in this heroic, action-packed epic based on the timeless play by William Shakespeare. "Magnificent, passionate and steeped in powerful emotion" (The Washington Post), Henry V is a "stunning," (Leonard Maltin) OscarÂ(r)-nominated* adventure that takes its place amongst the greatest war films of all time.Having recently been crowned King of England, Henry (Branagh) commands a massive invasion to assert what he believes is his legal right to the throne of France. But a mighty army stands in his wayÂ...and the young monarch must rely on untested reserves of courage and cunning as he personally leads his outnumbered forces into a desperate battle for the honor and glory of the British Empire. *1989: Director, Actor (Branagh), Costume Design (winner)
Customer Reviews:
Better than the play.......2007-08-18
The play Henry V is "wordy". A handful of the Bard's plays are. On the one hand, plays such as Macbeth and King Lear with the greatest economy of words. On the other, the wordy plays - both the Shakespeare-Fletcher plays (The Two Noble Kinsmen and Pericles Prince of Tyre), Love's Labours Lost, and Henry V. Central to the brilliance of this film production of Henry V is Branagh's inspired editing of the play. Hold a copy of the play in your lap as you watch the film: You'll see Branagh has thrown out the excess baggage and put Henry V into the pure-protein league of Lear and Macbeth. The result is electric. Throughout, Branagh's cadence and delivery are sterling, highlighting Henry's pure character and love of God. Henry the martial, the nonconformist, the devout, the tender - a character built on Faith.
Though not as great as Hamlet, Henry V is packed with some of the best dialogue and soliloquies in English literature (until Tennyson's epic poem Idylls of the King centuries later):
1. The (beautifully edited) speech of the Archbishop of Canterbury (Act I sc 2)
2. The livid "dressing down" of the French ambassador (Act I sc 2)
3. The ferocious condemnation of Lords Cambridge, Scroop, and Grey (Act II sc 2)
4. The martial "Or close the wall up with our English dead" (Act III sc 1) and "What say ye, ye men of Harfleur?" speeches before the ruined gates of Harfleur (Act III sc 3)
5. The stern epitaph for his dear friend Bardolph (Act III sc 6)
6. The profound "Ceremony" soliloquy (Act IV sc 1) followed fast by the wrenching guilt and horror of Henry's kneeling, tearful, devout prayer to God before the battle (Act IV sc 1)
7. The galvanizing "band of brothers" speech to his "all-besmirched" army on the field of Agincourt (Act IV sc 3)
8. The tender, tears-with-laughter epiphany of Fluellen's dialogue with Henry once the field is won (Act IV sc 7 and 8) - "Here was a royal fellowship of death."
9. And once the field IS won, Henry - having lost nearly all he loved to serve God, his country, and conquer overwhelming odds - refuses to boast when told of his triumph:
"Praised be God, and not our strength for it... And be it death proclaimed through our host to boast of this, or take that praise from God which is His only."
Magical. Unbelievable. Passionate.
"O God of battles: Steel my soldiers' hearts.
Possess them not with fear. Take from them now
Their sense of reckoning if the opposing numbers
Pluck their hearts from them. Not today, O God,
O not today! Think not upon the fault
My father made in compassing the crown!"
A frustration for the hard-of-hearing.......2007-08-17
I have waited a long time to watch this movie. Imagine my disappointment when I found no Closed Captioning or English subtitles. I am hard of hearing, and lack of captioning forced me to turn the movie off in frustration within 10 minutes.
How much trouble can it be to offer this simple thing that would make a movie accessible to those with hearing loss? Thumbs down to those who exclude us.
I will take the word of others that this is a very fine movie, but I sure would have liked to find out for myself.
Henry V.......2007-08-13
Great seller and the movie arrived fast, and it was in excellent condition. No problems. Thanks.
Amazing!!!.......2007-07-26
Knowing a bit of British history did help with the understanding of the historical context. I saw it in the theater when it came out and absolutely was blown away. Sir Lawrence Olivier's Henry cannot hold a candle to this. Riding into camp after the battle on a perfectly clean white mount and impecabbly groomed just does not convey the sense of realism Kenneth Branagh brings to the performance. Olivier's Henry has just fought a viscious hand-to-hand battle in the rain and mud, yet miraculously stays spotless. You get the feeling that Shakespeare would very much approve of this rendering--that this was exactly what he had in mind when he wrote it. England needed a hero, and Shakespeare gave them one. The cast is supurb. Kudos to Robbie Coltrane as Falstaff and Paul Scofield as the French king. Perfect casting all around. Sometimes I get it out just to watch the St. Crispin's Day speech which hands down has to be the finest bit of theater I've ever seen. Kenneth Branagh is simply amazing.
Shakespeare was above all a dramatist and he often sacrifices historical truth for dramatic license, witness his Richard III. The real historical Henry probably was not as humble or heroic as portrayed, there was really no good reason to attack France at that juncture, and he had to trot out the hundred-year-old claim of his great-grandfather (which in its day was a good one), for going to war. This probably went right over the heads of those not aquainted with it. But Henry was a battle commander extradonaire, of that there can be no doubt, and much feared by the French, as were "the other lions of his blood."
I cannot recommend this movie highly enough.
See It to Believe It.......2007-05-12
This is a film so good it is hard to review. Henry V is not a major Shakespeare play, but rather a strong cross section of who Shakespeare was in his own time, aiming to rouse and please an audience with memory of a universally loved hero-conqueror king, before the debacle of the war of the roses. It is all straight up heroism with no looking back, with bombast that only makes sense when performed, and loads of unabashed patriotism.
Branagh spectacularly made his entry into film here, having long directed Shakespeare on stage. In many ways it is his most defining moment; many think it his best, and it is hard to argue with them. The film is full of verve and gritty realism, Branagh having learned much from Orson Welles' depiction of medieval war in Chimes at Midnight. The plot is about as simple as you can get -- the young British king invades and conquers France, and gets a French wife in return for letting up. Yet I would disagree that this, like Chimes, is some kind of anti-war statement. This is the way the world once was folks, and there are no knowing winks to the modern audience or tongue in cheek ironies here. Branagh gratefully plays his Shakespeare straight, and we are supposed to cheer, not moan, when the king ruthlessly dispatches traitors and derelicts, including one of Falstaff's merry crew.
Of course, the new dimension of realism possible with the film camera makes some of the heroics incongruous to certain modern sensibilities -- Branagh in fact introduces the film studio in the opening chorus section, as if it is another character in the drama. This is directorily wise and shrewd, but Branagh's only concession to the present moment. Mano a mano is the game, both in the story line and in offscreen ambitions -- Lawrence Olivier being the offscreen shadow opponent. Branagh bested the master here, in this memorable and ever fresh production.

On the DVDs
On disc 1 is a 16-minute documentary "Freedom! Forever!: Making V for Vendetta" with discussions on the movie's origin and themes by the principal cast and crew (no Alan Moore or Wachowskis, to no one's surprise, but the graphic novel's illustrator David Lloyd is on hand to call the movie "a very good version"). On disc 2 is a 17-minute production featurette, a 10-minute history of Guy Fawkes, and the 15-minute "England Prevails: V for Vendetta and the New Wave in Comics." Lloyd and others from the comics industry such as Paul Levitz and Bill Sienkiwicz talk about the graphic novel and how it appealed to a different, older audience. The second menu of the second disc also has an easy-to-find Easter egg of a rapping and swearing Natalie Portman on Saturday Night Live. --David Horiuchi

"Remember, remember the fifth of November," for on this day, in 2020, the minds of the masses shall be set free. So says code-name V (Hugo Weaving), a man on a mission to shake society out of its blank complacent stares in the film V for Vendetta. His tactics, however, are a bit revolutionary, to say the least. The world in which V lives is very similar to Orwell's totalitarian dystopia in 1984: after years of various wars, England is now under "big brother" Chancellor Adam Sutler (played by John Hurt, who played Winston Smith in the movie 1984), whose party uses force and fear to run the nation. After they gained power, minorities and political dissenters were rounded up and removed; artistic and unacceptable religious works were confiscated. It is through their relationship where we learn how V became V, the extremities of the party's corruption, the problems of an oppressive government, V's revenge plot, and his philosophy on how to induce change.
Based on the popular graphic novel by Alan Moore, V for Vendetta's screenplay was written by the Wachowski brothers (of The Matrix fame) and directed by their protégé, James McTeigue. Controversy and criticism followed the film since its inception, from the hyper-stylized use of anarchistic terrorism to overthrow a corrupt government and the blatant jabs at the current U.S. political arena, to graphic novel fans complaining about the reconstruction of Alan Moore's original vision (Moore himself has dismissed the film).

Description
Set against the futuristic landscape of totalitarian Britain, V For Vendetta tells the story of a mild-mannered young woman named Evey (Natalie Portman) who is rescued from a life-and-death situation by a masked man (Hugo Weaving) known only as "V." Incomparably charismatic and ferociously skilled in the art of combat and deception, V ignites a revolution when he urges his fellow citizens to rise up against tyranny and oppression. As Evey uncovers the truth about V's mysterious background, she also discovers the truth about herself - and emerges as his unlikely ally in the culmination of his plan to bring freedom and justice back to a society fraught with cruelty and corruption.

Excellent Movie! Excellent HD-DVD.......2007-09-10
I don't know if you guys have priced HD-DVD's locally at places like Best Buy, but the prices at those retail stores are CRAZY! If you browse the HD-DVD's here on Amazon, you'll notice most are around $19.99. Well I went to best buy and the absolute cheapest one was $24.99 and most were $29.99 and up! You just can't go wrong with buying HD-DVD's at Amazon. And no i don't work for them....I've just already done the research...so you don't have too!
Back to this particular movie on HD-DVD. Looked great to me on my Toshiba HD-A2!
Natalie Portman.......2007-08-26
Natalie Portman with her best British ascent is great in this movie. Britian has become a fascist state in this tale of the future.
Corey Cotta, Author of All of Yesterdays Tomorrows.
haunting.......2007-08-17
I haven't made up my mind if I like this or not. I watch it once and awhile because it has a haunting quality to it. Love Portman. Can't get the lines by V out of my head.Has some truths in it that you can't forget.

Produced by Oprah Winfrey, this lush, yet earthy telefilm was adapted from the 1937 novel by Zora Neale Hurston. Set in rural Florida, the story begins several years after emancipation. Janie (a soulful Halle Berry) is a dreamy-eyed teenager, who never knew her parents. She was raised by the bitter Nanny (Ruby Dee), an ex-slave, who marries her off to an older man the minute she gets the chance. Mr. Killicks works Janie like a dog, but leaves her alone otherwise (he's abusive in the book). Then Janie meets the courtly Joe (Ruben Santiago-Hudson, Lackawanna Blues), who whisks her away from the muck to the black township of Eatonville. The two proceed to transform the town from a patch of dirt into a real community. Along the way, Joe becomes mayor and Janie a mere helpmate. Except for her friend Phoeby (Nicki Micheaux), the townspeople confuse her sadness for conceit and she ends up lonelier than ever. Twenty years later, Joe dies and Janie takes up with the younger Tea Cake (Michael Ealy, Barbershop). Much like the other literary adaptations with which she's been associated (The Color Purple, Beloved, etc.), this Oprah production boasts an impressive line-up of African-American talent, including Terrence Howard (Crash) as the covetous Amos. A mostly successful mix between suds and substance, Their Eyes Were Watching God, which premiered on ABC, was directed by Darnell Martin, co-written by Pulitzer Prize winner Suzan Lori-Parks, and graced with a classy score by frequent Spike Lee collaborator Terence Blanchard. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

Amazon.com essential video
The Monterey International Pop Festival, the three-day event staged in 1967 that has become one of rock music's most famous and in some ways greatest concerts, gets the royal treatment with this three-disc boxed set.
Material on two of the three discs has already been widely available. Monterey Pop, D.A. Pennebaker's 79-minute, 1968 film, effectively sets the scene for the festival, which took place during the fabled "Summer of Love," when the hippie ethos was in its fullest flower, especially on the West Coast. And while not all the featured performances are thrilling, those that are--principally by the Who, Jimi Hendrix, and the amazing Ravi Shankar--are worth the price of admission, especially in the high-definition digital transfer and new 5.1 mix seen and heard here. The same can be said for Jimi Plays Monterey and Shake! Otis at Monterey, which appear in the boxed set on a separate disc and provide a much fuller look at Hendrix's and Otis Redding's incendiary sets (literally, in the former case).
Those two discs are also loaded with bonus features, including audio commentary by Pennebaker, festival producer Lou Adler (on Monterey Pop), and author Peter Guralnick (Shake!); audio-only remarks by some of the performers; photos; trailers; and other material. There's also a substantial booklet, filled with essays and photos. But it's the third disc, "The Outtake Performances," comprising some two hours of music that didn't make the final film edit, that will be of most interest to many viewers. The disc supplies a taste of some of the artists who didn't appear in Monterey Pop at all (the Byrds, Buffalo Springfield, Quicksilver Messenger Service), and a more complete look at some who did (the Who, Simon and Garfunkel, the Mamas and the Papas). A nice addition to an already very impressive DVD collection. --Sam Graham

4.5 Star... The Summer of Love happened 40 years ago this summer.......2007-08-03
Historical value: 5 stars; DVD collection: 4 stars
Let's start with the obvious: this collection is a vast improvement over the single DVD set of the movie previously available. DVD1 brings us that movie, in its original length (80 min.), and remains a fascinating time capsule of what happened that summer weekend 40 years ago. If you have the proper sound installation at home, you will enjoy the 5.1 mix of the performances to no end. Also quite interesting is the subsequent 40 min. interview of a couple of years ago with D.A. Pennebaker (the movie director--he of Bob Dylan fame) and Lou Adler (the festival producer), who in a nice little twist "interview" each other.
DVD2 collects "Jimi Plays Monterey" and "Shake! Otis at Monterey". The Hendrix piece is for me the more enjoyable one. Interestingly, prior to the footage of Jimi's actual performance of Monterey, there is a short introducory piece on him, including footage of Hendrix at a show in London, playing the title track of "Sgt. Pepper's Loneley Heart Club Band", which literally just had come out then. Fascinating!
DVD3 brings a two hour long hosh-posh of performances that were not included in the movie, and while it is enjoyable to watch this (such as Buffalo Springfield, the Byrds, and more of the Who--including the mini-suite "A Quick One", the Mamas and the Papas, and Simon & Garfunkel, just to name those, I couldn't help but think to myself "I want more"! Surely there is tons of unused footage (I believe Pennbaker says at some point that they shot more than 500 hrs of footage, but don't quote me on that). One of the strangest MIA is of course the Grateful Dead. I caught about 2 seconds of their performance in the original theatrical trailer, which is included on DVD1, but otehr than that, there is absolutely nothing. How is this possible?
I watched DVD1 with my 17 yr. old daughter. Both of our jaws were on the floor watching (re-watching for me) the legendary "Ball & Chain" performance by Janis Joplin/BBHC, among others. It was fascinating and fun pointing out artists that she had heard of by name, but never actually seen perform. In summary, "The Complete Monterey Pop Festival: Criterion Collection" is far from complete, yet a must-have for any fan of rock music, and for any historian interested in looking what "the Summer of Love" looked like. That said, I can only hope that in due course more as of yet unseen performances from the festival will be released.
Where is the rest or it?.......2007-07-31
I bought this supposed 3-disc set for my brother as a birthday present. He called me now a week later to tell me that not only is one of the discs missing, but that the other material on the discs is out of order according to the menus and box. So what the heck did I pay all this money for. Criterion is a highly respected company as far as I'm concerned... and they totally blew it. I hope at least Amazon will give me some sort of exchange!
The birthplace of 60s Rock Festivals.......2007-07-24
The eqipment used to make this movie was only fair. HOWEVER, for good reason this my favorite. The performances of The Who, Jimi Hendrix, Otis Redding, Janis Joplin, and more, are terrific. It is quite fun to see Mama Cass's reaction to Janis Joplin's "Ball and Chain." The ending of the festival is fantastic-- Ravi Shankar's group plays the longest and most wonderful raga, or whatever one would call it. Have you ever listened to some performer-- and the performance is so incredible that at the end you stand up applauding? The performance has literally pulled you out of your seat? Well Shankar's raga pulled everyone out of their seat-- even Micky Dolenz of the monkees. I have owned the video for 20 years or so, and it is by far the best 60s rock concert I have ever heard.-- Sam Yulish, author of WHERE HAVE ALL THE HIPPIES GONE and THE HESITANT PSYCHIC AND OTHER STRANGE STORIES.
A cultural icon.......2007-07-19
The Monterey Pop Festival, held over three days in mid-June of 1967, just seems like one of those defining definitive moments of the Sixties, one of the era's cultural icons. And though at the time, the hippie countercultural movement in California had been around for a couple of years. this festival was really the first time that people from outside of California had really had any interaction with hippies, heard this type of music, and began adopting the wardrobe and lifestyle for themselves. It's also nice how the shots of the crowd juxtapose the flower children with more status-quo individuals, such as cops and traditionally-dressed people. They were able to mingle peacefully, in striking contrast to how everything seemed to erupt in flames at the end of the decade. And just like how most people outside of the area had never been exposed to the hippie culture before, so too had most people never heard a lot of the artists on the bill.
The film itself does leave a bit to be desired, since only a handful of acts get more than one song, but it's more about what the festival represented than who was included over whom, and which songs were excluded. It was meant to be shown in theatres as a feature film, not an exhaustive documentary covering every single moment of the festival. It's more like giving the viewer a representative slice of what went on, although I will agree that some of the shooting seems to have been the result of amateurishness and/or acid, such as how a good portion of "Today" consists of the back of Grace Slick's head. Probably the best performances showcased on the film are from Ravi Shankar (who has a very long, but amazing, concluding performance), Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, The Who, and Otis Redding. Bonus features include a trailer, audio commentary, interviews, and a gallery of photos and PR materials.
Disc two contains the films 'Shake! Otis at Monterey' and 'Jimi Plays Monterey,' giving us the full-length performances from these two respective artists. For both of them, Monterey really gave their careers a boost; most white audiences, in America at least, had never even heard Otis, let alone knew who he was, and while Jimi was a huge star in England, he wasn't yet very well-known in his native America. Both of them are just bursts of energy and professionalism. Prior to viewing this, I barely knew anything about Otis Redding, though after seeing his hugely energetic performance, I'm definitely interested in hearing some more of his music. And as on the first disc, the second disc also contains commentaries, interviews, and trailers.
Disc three contains about two hours worth of outtakes, some of them from artists who weren't represented in the film at all, such as The Association, Al Kooper, The Paul Butterfield Blues Band, Laura Nyro, The Byrds (whose performance includes a famously horrible rendition of "Hey Joe"), and Buffalo Springfield (introduced by Peter Tork). There are also additional performances from artists already represented in the film, to give a more complete view, such as Simon and Garfunkel, Jefferson Airplane, The Mamas and The Papas (whose entire closing set is included), and The Who (who didn't really become huge in America for another two years and who were still not yet the killer live act they were to become after 1969). Unfortunately, there are also four songs by the novelty performer Tiny Tim. The space given up to his bizarre and rather annoying Dr. Demento-type music could have been much-better served giving more extra performances to a group like Buffalo Springfield or Big Brother and the Holding Company. The bands showcased on the afternoon of day two, the blues bands, also only get one number apiece. While I'm not really a fan of blues, I would have far preferred hearing some more music from them over even one song from Tiny Tim! It's also a pity how some of the bands have minimal or no surviving footage, such as The Association, who only have one song, and The Grateful Dead, whose footage is supposedly lost.
Overall, it's a great snapshot of that hopeful era in time, when people cared about peace, love, and changing the world, when music really mattered, long before the artificial vapid noise on MTV today, when all kinds of people and all kinds of bands could unite in a three-day festival without coming to blows, when there really were people who wore flowers in their hair and psychedelic clothing. Besides being a great representation of what the Sixties were all about, it's also bound to introduce the viewer to at least a few acts s/he hasn't been exposed to before and to expand one's musical horizons.
Great Rental, Lousy Purchase.......2007-07-14
Great film and content, but needlessly spread out over three discs and $20-$30 too expensive. The Monterey Pop film, Otis and Jimi sets, and performance outtakes are all great, but the disc devoted to Otis and Jimi only has about an hour's worth of film which could have easily been fit on to the other two discs or could have included more content to justify the whole extra disc and price. Spreading this much material out over three discs seems like a ripoff to charge more money for an extra DVD that's more than half empty. I'd highly recommended watching these to any 60's rock fan, but I'd recommend renting now and don't buy it until it's available at a deep discount or secondhand.

Despite the presence of hack director Arthur Hiller, this hybrid comedy-thriller works most of the time as pleasant faux Hitchcock. Gene Wilder is a book editor who is relaxing by taking a cross-country train ride. Then he gets caught up in a murder--and becomes a suspect. It's up to him to prove his own innocence. As noted, the script, by Colin Higgins, owes a big debt to Alfred Hitchcock; but the mystery isn't all that mysterious and the comedy isn't all that hilarious--at least not until Richard Pryor shows up, which is at least halfway through the film. Things definitely pick up from there. Jill Clayburgh, as the love interest, is merely along for the train ride. Wilder and Pryor eventually teamed up for several other films, but they were never as funny together as they are in this one. --Marshall Fine

Silver Streak.......2007-07-04
A diverting, infectious Hitchcock spoof mixing romance, intrigue and murder on a cross-country train trip, Hiller's "Streak" was a box-office smash in 1976. Pairing Wilder and Pryor for the first time (they'd make three pictures together), the movie gets a lot of comic mileage out of their nutty rapport, though Pryor doesn't show until the film is half over. Still, with a solid cast including McGoohan as the villainous Roger Devereau, Ned Beatty as a federal agent and Ray Walston as an old-time hood, "Silver Streak" is a fun, zany ride.
Lots of humor - lots of action. Great!.......2007-06-08
An excellent cast, many very interesting characters. The action is fast, but well-laced with humor. If you like your "krimi" films to be tempered with a good mixture of the human touch, this one is for you. The finale is fantastic and very true to life. Can only recommend Silver Streak most highly.
Silver Streak -- DVD.......2007-03-20
I'm a railroad kid so I loved the train and the ambience of the train. This is a wonderful film. Whenever I hear someone has taken a train ride, I always recommend this film to them afterwards. I love the dramatic ending and don't want to scare anyone before their ride.
One the greatest films I have ever seen.......2007-03-05
This was one of the first films I have ever seen at the theatre and one of the greatest. I have been telling friends and family for over 20 years that they need to watch this picture. Gene Wilder is calm and caring but also very funny. Richard Pryor is sneaky and clever but also hilarious at the same time. I have always been fascinated with train travel so it helps that this picture takes place on a train. The scenery is beautiful, the music is sweet and the people that Wilder and Pryor come across are entertaining. Gene Wilder tries to milk a cow, goes flying in a bi plane and even tries to pass for black by putting shoe polish on his face with the help of Pryor. This film was nominated for a few awards and walked away with some as well, I can see why.
Silver Streak .......2006-07-19
One of Gene Wilder's best performances. I saw this in high school and have wanted to have a copy. Nothing is better than Wilder trying to pass as black. Great movie.

Whether your intellect is completely engaged or passively detached, any viewing of Naqoyqatsi is likely to provoke a fascinating response. You can view it as a magnificent, visually stimulating music video (as critic Roger Ebert suggested you should), or in context as the third and most unsettling film in director Godfrey Reggio's "qatsi" trilogy, each titled from the Hopi language, and preceded by Koyaanisqatsi and Powaqqatsi ("Life out of Balance" and "Life in Transformation," respectively). "Life as War" is the translation of this film's title, and Reggio's theme is not one of conventional warfare, but of daily life as warfare in the age of rapidly evolving technology. The entire trilogy views humankind as a blight on the pristine nature of Earth, but here the theme is taken to its inevitable extreme: a constant flow of new and archival images--manipulated with solarization, digital enhancements, thermal effects, 2-D and 3-D animation, etc.--combine to convey athletic and military regimentation, culminating in the doomsday flowering of missiles, rockets, and all varieties of nuclear weaponry. The cumulative effect, when combined with Philip Glass's mesmerizing score (his best of the trilogy, with cello solos by Yo-Yo Ma) is one of doom-laden portent, but, as Stephen Holden observed in the New York Times, the film is also arrestingly beautiful as it weaves its hypnotic, apocalyptic spell. For those who wish to delve further, Reggio, Glass, and editor/visual designer Jon Kane provide valuable insight in a bonus panel discussion. --Jeff Shannon
Description
Miramax Home Entertainment and Oscar(R)-winning filmmaker Steven Soderbergh (Best Director, TRAFFIC, 2000) present NAQOYQATSI ("Life As War"), from filmmaker Godfrey Reggio, in collaboration with composer Phillip Glass, whose original score features renowned cellist Yo-Yo Ma. In this cinematic concert -- the concluding film of the Qatsi Trilogy preceded by the critically acclaimed KOYAANISQATSI ("Life Out Of Balance"), and POWAQQATSI ("Life In Transformation") -- mesmerizing images reanimated from everyday reality, then visually altered with state-of-the-art digital techniques, chronicle the shift from a world organized by the principles of nature to one dominated by technology, the synthetic, and the virtual. Extremes of intimacy and spectacle, tragedy and hope, fuse in a tidal wave of visuals and music, giving rise to a unique artistic experience that reflects Reggio's visions of a brave new globalized world.

Gorgeous and Stunning.......2007-08-19
Loved it, even though I'm still not sure what the message is!
Koyaanis was straightforward, simple and impactful. Strongest entry in the series.
Powaq was too esoteric. Unless you knew intimately what the locations, cultures, rituals and routines the film depicted were, you were missing the point, as I always have.
Naqoy returns to the subject of the USA, but I'm not sure what Reggio is saying. I expected something immediate and impactful, as Koyaanis had been, but instead I'm puzzled and feel the meaning to be very vague.
Maybe it's a matter of cracking the code. I hate to say it, but the film needs a commentary track by Reggio in which he deliniates what the images mean to him and why he chose them!
For all that, it's still a deep, beautiful, and confounding film. It certainly twists my mind around, but in a way too ineffable to understand.
Music video or feature film?.......2007-05-18
Having read some other reviews here, I have to agree with their basic criticism. Then again, perhaps this film should not so much be critisised as a feature film, but as a music video, or in fact a video installation that took the wrong door. Watching this as a feature film is unbearable for anyone with a sense of plot. Also, it has so many flashy effects that there should be a seizure warning on the package. But the film certainly goes well as a background for Phil Glass' very enjoyable music, or for running it in the background during a weird, geeky party you are having in an abandoned Detroit warehouse...
very, very disappointing... and bad.......2007-01-23
The first film in this trilogy, Koyaanisqatsi, is a classic.
The second, Powaqatsi, is not as good but still worth watching.
Naqoyaqaatsi, to quote some other reviewers, is just 'a mishmash of computer-treated footage, signifying nothing'... 'all quite forgettable'... except that the feeling of disillusionment and disappointment is hard to forget... The absence of Ron Fricke and his incredible cinematography that mad the other films so great stops this from even being interesting.
Don't waste your time.
Amazing........2007-01-12
If you have not watched this yet and have any inclination to, PLEASE DO. It is not a "movie with a plot" so to speak, but a film/documentation of society and culture. I love it. (But watch Kooyanisqatsi first. ) In comparison, it is what Kooyannisqatsi would have been had it been made 20 years later. I think it's brilliant.
Very disappointing end to the series.......2006-12-13
The first film in this trilogy, Koyaanisqatsi, is a classic, and features what is possibly the best score Philip Glass ever wrote for anything.
The second, Powaqatsi, is not as good but still worth watching.
This third installment offers none of the thought-provoking imagery of the first two films. It's just a mishmash of computer-treated footage, signifying nothing, and all quite forgettable. I wonder what went wrong?
Don't waste your time.

In this day and age of Terrorism, the fear of Terrorism, and the Fascist use of that fear, the story is more im
