The winner of 10 Academy Awards, this 1961 musical by choreographer Jerome Robbins and director Robert Wise (The Sound of Music) remains irresistible. Based on a smash Broadway play updating Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet to the 1950s era of juvenile delinquency, the film stars Natalie Wood and Richard Beymer as the star-crossed lovers from different neighborhoods--and ethnicities. The film's real selling points, however, are the highly charged and inventive song-and-dance numbers, the passionate ballads, the moody sets, colorful support from Rita Moreno, and the sheer accomplishment of Hollywood talent and technology producing a film so stirring. Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim wrote the score. --Tom Keogh
Description
This brilliant (The New Republic) film sets the ageless story of Romeo and Juliet against a backdrop of gang warfare in 1950s New York. Directed by Robert Wise and Jerome Robbins and scripted by Ernest Lehman, the film combines Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim's unforgettable score ( Maria, America, 'somewhere, 'tonight ) with Robbins own exuberant choreography to achieve an exhilarating work of art (Saturday Review). A love affair is fated for tragedy amidst the vicious rivalry of two street gangsthe Jets and the Sharks. When Jets member Tony (RichardBeymer) falls for Maria (Natalie Wood), the sister of the Sharks leader, it's more than these two warring gangs can handle. And as mounting tensions rise, a battle to the death ensues, and innocent blood is shed in a heartbreaking finale.

WEST SIDE STORY IS THE WINNER OF 10 ACADAMY AWARDS INCLUDING BEST PICTURE IN 1961!.......2007-09-04
I am writing a review on the legendary landmark musical film entitled "WEST SIDE STORY" starring three of Hollywood's all-time greatest movie icons ever. I give you the late great and always beautiful NATALIE WOOD, RICHARD BEYMER and RITA MORENO. "WEST SIDE STORY" was originally released in 1961 by MGM/UA Motion Pictures.
Three days ago I wrote my last review on NATALIE WOOD'S last ever film entitled "BRAINSTORM" from 1983. However, I could not end my series of NATALIE on a bad note so I figured that I would write one more review on her in order to end my series on her on a better note. Throughout her incredible career, NATALIE WOOD has given us so many great legendary films to remember her by but I feel that the film that I'm about to review for all of you today will pretty much sum up her brilliant career in spectacular form. Again, as THE LATE GREAT ONE JACKIE GLEASON once said, "and away we go!"
When "WEST SIDE STORY" was released in 1961, this film was far ahead of its time. It actually took musicals into a different level and dimension unimagined. Who would have ever believed that rival gangs in 1950's New York would be turned into a beautiful and romantic Romeo & Juliet musical? The acting and dancing choreography in "WEST SIDE STORY" was so spectacular that the film won 10 Acadamy Awards including Best Picture for 1961.
"WEST SIDE STORY" is the romantic Romeo & Juliet love story of a guy and a girl that are separated and torn apart by their rival gangs. WOOD and BEYMER star as the star-crossed lovers from different neighborhoods and ethnicities. WOOD stars as the sister of the rival sharks gang leader and BEYMER stars as the rival jets gang member that WOOD falls for.
As for the acting, MGM/UA couldn't have chosen three more talented actors to portray the roles than NATALIE WOOD, RICHARD BEYMER and RITA MORENO. In my opinion, WOOD was perfect for the role. Her acting performance was taken to a different level that not even she could have ever imagined. BEYMER's performance supported and complimented WOOD perfectly. Lets not forget RITA MORENO'S performance. Her dancing was magnificent. MORENO complimented and backed up both WOOD and BEYMER in more ways than one. I have read that all three stars' voices were dubbed and were not their actual real singing voices. Despite that, their singing performances could have fooled me. And to add more, the fighting dance choreography scenes between both gangs were incredible. "WEST SIDE STORY" was one great realistic musical film, no wonder the film won 10 Academy Awards.
I highly recommend "WEST SIDE STORY" for everyone of all ages to watch and enjoy. As long as films are still around, "WEST SIDE STORY" will live on forever and will never be forgotten. "WEST SIDE STORY" has proven to stand the test of time indeed. So here's to you my late great sweet NATALIE, RICHARD and RITA. May you always rest in peace NATALIE. Thanks for reading my review and I truly hope that you have enjoyed reading it as much as I have enjoyed writing it for your reading pleasure. I also deeply hope that you will continue in reading all of my other reviews in the near future when time permits. NATALIE WOOD FOREVER! R.I.P. NATASHA NIKOLAEVNA ZACHARENKO A.K.A. Adapted by Robert Wise and Jerome Robbins from the long-running Broadway play, this triumphant production combines a brilliant score and jaw-dropping choreography with a heart-rending tale of doomed love. The miracle about Miracle is that it gets so many details right in telling its 24-year-old story about the historic victory of the U.S. hockey team at the 1980 Olympic Games. It's typical for Hollywood to compromise such period details as hairstyles and fashion when catering to a contemporary audience, but Miracle looks and feels right in every detail, capturing the downbeat mood of post-Watergate America while showing how obsessively determined Minnesota hockey coach Herb Brooks (Kurt Russell) managed to assemble a once-in-a-lifetime team and whip them into a victorious frenzy over their Soviet champion opponents. With sharp support from Patricia Clarkson (as Brooks's wife) and Noah Emmerich (as his long-suffering assistant), Russell grounds the film with a well-balanced combination of aloofness, intimidation, and closely guarded strategy. No doubt the real Brooks (who died in a car accident shortly after filming completed) would have approved. Thanks to director Gavin O'Connor (Tumbleweeds) and the producers of the similarly laudable sports films Remember the Titans and The Rookie, Miracle brings plenty of heart--and historical accuracy--to an old, familiar formula. --Jeff Shannon
Description
From the studio that brought you THE ROOKIE and REMEMBER THE TITANS comes the movie everybody loves -- MIRACLE. Filled with exhilarating nonstop hockey action and heart-racing suspense, it's the inspiring true story behind one of the greatest moments in sports history the 1980 United States ice hockey team's triumphant Olympic victory against the Soviet Union. Kurt Russell gives a brilliant performance as the dynamic and determined coach Herb Brooks, who had an impossible dream -- beat the seemingly unbeatable Soviets at their own game. Starting with a handpicked group of 26 undisciplined kids, Brooks coached them to play like they never played before, and turned 20 of them into a team that believed they could achieve the unachievable -- and in the process, united a nation with a new feeling of hope.

Great movie.......2007-09-07
My son has started to play ice hockey. In the past three years he has become obsessed with the sport. I remember wanting to see this movie when it came out because I was in high school when the US team won the gold medal. I never did see it when it was in the theaters. I bought this DVD as a gift for my son. What a great story. Well told and well acted.
Miracle.......2007-08-09
One of the best hockey movies. A must to have, and watch over and over.
Miracle.......2007-07-23
Despite our knowing the outcome, "Miracle" keeps us riveted right up to the final buzzer, revisiting a glorious moment in the storied history of the Olympics without resorting to all the familiar underdog-team clichés. Russell, assured in his role as Brooks, is ably supported by Patricia Clarkson, as his wise, supportive wife, Patty; Noah Emmerich as assistant coach Craig Patrick; and Eddie Cahill as team leader and goalie Jim Craig. Full of humanity and fun period detail (just check out Kurt's haircut and wardrobe!), "Miracle" scores as a first-rate family film.
This movie will get your heart rate going.......2007-07-23
I was 16 when this event happened and for some reason, I don't remember it. I saw the documentary "Do You Believe In Miracles" on HBO about three months ago, was totally in awe at this huge historical event, and to find out it was voted the sports event of the millennium in 2000 over incredible events such as Jack Dempsey, Joe Lewis, Seabuscuit, Secretariat, Walter Hagan, Joe Namath, Tiger Woods, Nadia Comaneci, Mary Lou Retton, MaEnroe, Billie Jean, Arther Ashe...and well.. it goes on and on, although I tend to agree with the other review before mine where sports is more commercially owned these days and more of a let down with it's drug use.
This movie depicts plays and events SOOO accurately you could have matched movie to documentary on tv's side by side and not seen much difference even where the players were on the ice!
The team for the movie was made up of real hockey players from the NHL, Canadian and Russian hockey teams.. only a couple were real actors, but ALL did superb in their portrayal of the player he was acting out.
If you are like me and didn't know of this most incredible event in American Olympic history (HOW did I MISS it??) I would highly recommend getting the documentary and the movie and soak in what it must have felt like.. you will leave this movie thinking "Wow.. maybe I can"...
A must see.
Like being there again..........2007-07-16
I was twelve years old when this event happened, sitting in a bedroom with my brothers and some friends, going absolutely crazy when they won the game. I wasn't aware of the larger implications, of the events in history that had been transpiring nor even the meaning of the Olympic games. I knew the Russians to be the bad guys, that was about it. Obviously I somehow knew there was something larger at stake because even my mother was surprised at how nuts we went when they won.
I hesitated to watch this film for a long time due, sadly, to the Disney attached to the film. I was afraid of it being given a gloss. Happily, this was not the case, as many reviewers here will attest to its accuracy and attention to detail.
The opening segue giving a quick and poignant synopsis of events that had been transpiring throughout that decade, with a few significant moments captured at various points throughout the film, grounds it in the history of which I was, at twelve years old, unaware.
Kurt Russell is incredible as the coach but it is the seasoned hockey players who were chosen to act in the film that really give this film its feel. Relive that moment or experience it for the first time, I highly recommend this film, especially in a day and age where the idea of sports has dissipated into big business. This was perhaps one of the last moments in sports history where there was something pure in the game.

Great Imax DVD.......2007-07-04
purchased for our 6 yr old grandson who watches the military channel religiously. He know all the names of the fighter planes that are retired & in service. We watched this DVD twice while we were visiting. The filming is fantastic.
Goosebumps all over.......2007-05-08
On the topic of the NTSC disc possibly not playing in "multizone" players outside of zone 1, I am happy to say that my JVC home theatre system (in Zone 2, PAL television country South Africa) had no problem in playing it in it's full glory. Despite it being obvious that quite a bit of the move was "staged", it doesn't detract enough from sheer moments of power, where surround sound comes to its right like never before, to warrant it not being given 5 out of 5. The Windows High Definition product also creates visuals on my computer monitor that has not been matched closely by anything else ever.
Despite the high cost of having it sent all the way to South Africa, it has already a "money well spent" item to me. No regrets (on the contrary, constant pats on the back!) on having taken the chance to purchase this product!

ok, but not great.......2007-03-27
The movie follows a fighter pilot sent to a elite training mission, however does not go into the more educational role as most IMAX movies do. It mainly tells a short story with no real details or plot line.
Very weak narrative, but some nice takes.......2007-03-17
The narrative is very weak up to the point of being embarrassed for those who wrote it.. But--the takes are nice and it gives a pretty comprehensive overview of what the exercise is all about.
Hollywood Gimmickry .......2007-03-12
I saw Fighter Pilot: Operation Red Flag on the USS Lexington museum in Corpus Christi, TX. At first I thought it was one on the most beautiful films ever made. But, I noticed some Hollywood gimmickry was afoot. In the dogfight scene, the pursuing F-16 didn't look right. Real dogfights are probably not that interesting in that computer guided missiles are fired many miles away so the aircraft never get that close. Also, in the live fire sequences, the bombs could not be seen and the explosions were too fiery. Wouldn't the target tank (as well as the camera) be destroyed?
Still, Fighter Pilot is an interesting film best seen at an IMAX theater with loud sound.

Product Description
A devastating story of war and a generation destroyed. In 1914 a group of German schoolboys, idealistic and inflamed with youthful patriotism, set off to fight in the "glorious" war. During their brutal basic training disenchantment begins; then, boarding a train for the front, they see the wounded being rushed back to hospitals. They begin to grasp the grim reality of war.
On their first night in action they come under heavy attack. In the trenches, they begin to fall. Their youth is stripped away by the violence, and the boys become as sullen as veterans.
When Paul (Richard Thomas) shoots a Frenchman and watches him die, he realizes the futility of the war. Wounded, he returns home to a different world, a place where he cannot fit in. Sent back into battle, he meets destiny on a day when the German High Command Communiqu states simply, All Quiet On The Western Front.

Taken from the novel by Erich Maria Remarque, All Quiet on the Western Front is a devastating portrait by Delbert Mann (Desire Under the Elms, Marty) of a small group of German soldiers throughout the World War I.
The star-studded cast is headed by Richard Thomas (The Waltons) as Paul Baumer, and includes such award-winning actors as Ernest Borgnine, Ian Holm, and Patricia Neal. As both narrator and star, Thomas occasionally seems to reincarnate his familiar John-Boy persona, but creates a character that has many more levels than that television alter ego. Watching Paul as he watches all of his high school buddies die is a highly emotional experience. He returns to his home a different person, conflicted in his feelings about the Army and war, evolving from an idealistic schoolboy to a fearful and humble veteran.
The scenery and costuming in this period piece are well done, and surely contributed to its winning the Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture Made for TV. Also contributing to the greatness of the film are the exceptional cinematography and special effects that, while realistically gruesome, truly emphasize the horrors of war. --Zachary Lively
Customer Reviews:
Great job, from 1979.......2007-09-12
This movie is very well done. I understand it was shot in the then East Germany or maybe Poland (?). Uniforms are correct, and it follows the book plotline pretty well.
It doesn't get the critical reviews that the 1930s film does, but I think that may be due to the wide acclaim that old classic has - and maybe due to some effects like the 1979 version being in color whilst the book never mentions colors - in fact, one can almost feel that era was all gray or black & white (and the 1939 film follows that theme, by necessity).
I think this film should be better known than it is, especially with some of the re-newed interest in the Great War after so long being overshadowed by WW2 and Vietnam...but understand, the book is not a happy one - its about hopelessness. This film version 'almost/sort of' tries to sidestep that, which is really impossible given the theme of the original book.
I wonder if it will ever be filmed again ??
Great War Film!.......2007-05-25
This is one of the best war films ever made. I've seen the first version also. This film is an improvement over the original although the original was done well with what they had back in early years of film. What really makes this war film great is that it doesn't glorify war at all but shows you the death and destruction of war. This film should be mandatory in all high schools! The book is very good also. The book is more descriptive than the movie. What happens to Paul in this film is happening to our young men and women in Iraq right now!!
The "Johnboy" version of AQWF is truly awful.......2007-05-01
This film might be okay for the general public or high school classroom, but this film brings almost nothing to the table for WWI buffs or lovers of the novel. It's hard to mention anything good about this film other than the fact that it is not as dated as the original film and is also in color.
Earnest Borgnine's casting as Kat is simply laughable. The boys' mentor in the trenches, the "old man," was "old" only in comparison to the teen-aged boys who surrounded him. The battle scenes do not inspire fear or horror. Equipment, uniforms, and sets are inaccurate and "made for TV quality" at best. The acting is wooden and hallow.
This film is a waste of time and is scornfully referred to as "the Johnboy version" by WWI buffs. It is universally reviled.
All Quiet on the Western Front.......2007-01-18
Great war documentary of WWI, there is very little available that shows this period in history on the front, but this one is a classic.
ALL QUIT ON THE WESTERN FRONT.......2007-01-17
I really enjoyed this movie. Not the typical "John Boy" movie. I have not seen the original, although I have recently purchased it. I will be able to make a better comparison once I have seen it. By itself, however, it holds it's own.

Description
A sprawling. Action-packed epic that sweeps off the pages of the Bible and across the screen recreating one of the most torrid tales of passion ever told, Gregory Peck delivers a commanding performance as David, King of the Israelites, who falls in love with Bathsheba (Susan Hayward), a beautiful woman- and wife of one of his captains. It's a story of sin and redemption, a searing saga of love as burning as the sands of the harsh landscape on which it was consummated. A love that violated the laws of man- and God. David, once the Chosen One, now risks God's wrath, his kingdom, and the life of Bathsheba, who may be stoned to death for his sin!

Hollywood At it's Best.......2007-07-06
For all those people who say all movies are junk, try this one it's not. Yes it's not totally acurate, but then who cares with Gregory Peck and Susan Hayworth.
If you are to young to know who they are, give them a chance. They were only the top in Hollywood for over 30 years.
The man at the top.......2007-06-13
I enjoyed this movie very much. Gregory Peck is a splendid actor who in my opinion appeal to the mature viewing public.
David & Bathsheba.......2007-05-20
As usual the delivery and condition of this DVD was excellant!!
I loved this movie. The acting was superb, how could it not be with such wonderful actors as Susan Hayward and Gegrory Peck!! Well worth purchasing!!
David and Bathsheba.......2007-05-17
i truly enjoyed this movie. It was a nice change from seeeing historical/biblical movies with a heavy violent content usually with a long war scene. This version gave a very clear understanding of this story, not just viewing it as a love story.
David and Bathsheba.......2007-05-12
Another great classic for your video/dvd library. I'm glad I didn't waste anymore time in getting it

This movie inspired me to truly live life.......2007-08-22
Josh Brolin of "The Goonies" fame stars in the best skateboarding movie ever made. This is back before sell-outs like Tony Hawk and before people played skateboarding games on "The Playstation".
Trashin' is basically like Romeo and Juliet except with skateboarding, really cheesy lines, and lots of being ridiculous. This movie never gets old. Even if you already have this movie, buy another copy and give it to a friend. They'll appreciate it.
I Like My Cheese Straight From The Can!.......2007-02-13
This is one of those "so awful it's unintentionally amazing" kinds of movies. It's everything that was cheesy about the 80's, only on wheels. I mean, this movie has so much cheese food goodness, it practically explodes from the can. You couldn't find more succulent cinematic trash (I mean "thrash") if you tried!
Need more proof? How 'bout this: the movie's theme song is performed by none other than Meat Loaf. That's right: you get meat and cheez - two essential sk8r food groups - right from the get go! What more do you need?! (Is it some great old skool skating you desire? Well it's got that too, with some of the greatest skaters of that time.)
And sure, Hook and the Daggers' (the "punk" villains) opening skate sequence is about as menacing as Pat Benatar's girlie group dance in the "Love Is a Battlefield" video, but c'mon - this here's a classic! Plus you haven't really lived until you've seen Hook's air guitar prowess. (Also, now-jailed ex-skater Gator plays one of the Daggers, so I really wouldn't mess with them...)
Yup. This movie is one that formed me. In fact, to this very day I often find myself thinking, "What would Radster do in a situation like this?" (trivia fact: Josh Richman, the actor who played Radley, now manages the band Deadsy, of Family Values Tour fame and acclaim).
And speaking of bands... I've always wondered how the Red Hot Chili Peppers (who appear at a party with their original lineup playing "Black Eyed Blonde") felt to be included amidst all the synthesized bleeps and blorps of the new wave Thomas Dolby-esque soundtrack? I mean, seriously - it's about the most anti-skate soundtrack you could possibly put together!
The song playing during the inevitable love scene is just hilariously awful - like a poor man's "Almost Paradise" (if you can even imagine a lesser version of that song). (All right, I'll admit that the Circle Jerks playing "Wild in the Streets" almost makes up for it) (almost) (but I was still glad to hear in the commentary that even this movie's director hates that song)
Suffice it to say: without this flick, I would have never known how to get ready for a joust (you paint your eyes like some sort of radioactive pirate raccoon, of course)! It seems so obvious once this movie shows you the way, but without it? Well, I wouldn't have a clue. (note: a joust is a skateduel where two people try to hit each other with combination maces/man-purses, later recreated as an homage by the Jackass crew.)
And I won't give away what happens at the spectacularly surprising and climactic climax at Tuna Canyon ("the steepest and gnarliest course on the circuit," dooood), but suffice it to say: it's bitchin'. I'm not kidding.
This DVD also features an awesome commentary track where they call Johnny Depp and rag on Tony Hawk (who appeared in this movie at age 15 but later dissed it in his book), among other things. There are so many great lines from the commentary track alone to make this worth your while, but I'll leave you with Robert Rusler (Hook) talking about Hawk: "If I knew that man was going to be a tri-zillionaire, I would've been nicer to him on the set." Heh!
robert rusler is my hero!!!.......2007-01-11
this movie is amazing! watch the movie with the commentary!!!
Heck yeah.......2006-12-31
Good flick, just like I remember it on VHS, just now in the durability of DVD. Very '80's, but fun.....still hate the bad guys, love watchin' the action. Good flick for you '80s junkies!!!! Now where the heck is Rad on DVD?
Great 80's skate scenes...........2006-12-17
The movie is pretty cheesy. The production quality is low, the acting is almost laughable, and you'll hear some of the worst music ever used in a motion picture (and definitely not representative of skating in any era). However, here is why the movie gets 5 stars. There is so much skating that takes place that even if you hate the story you can appreciate the movie for the on board action. It really reflects the mid-80's skate scene by including pool, ramp, streetstyle, freestyle, and downhill. The actors are weak but the actual skating stunt doubles were the best of their time - Tony Hawk, Tony Alva, Per Welinder, Mike McGill, Steve Caballero, Christian Hosoi, Lester Kasai, Billy Ruff, Steve Steadham, Tony Magnussen, & Lance Mountain. Also some of the earliest Red Hot Chilli Peppers footage you'll probably ever find.

Product Description
From the studio that brought you THE ROOKIE and REMEMBER THE TITANS comes the movie everybody loves -- MIRACLE. Filled with exhilarating nonstop hockey action and heart-racing suspense, it's the inspiring true story behind one of the greatest moments in s
Amazon.com
Customer Reviews:

A FITTING TRIBUTE.......2007-06-20
This film is a fitting tribute to the "Talvisota." I have a personal connection - my father was among those on the front lines, those that the movie depicts. He was one of TWO men to survive from his unit, and while he didn't like to speak of the war, the movie was extremely accurate from the accounts my father did share. As for the ending, I noted one of the reviewers didn't "get it." My dad said that one day they were shooting at each other, and the next they were fishing together. So, yes, the brutal combat ended in the blink of an eye, as soon as word came. Neither the young Finns nor the young Russians wanted to be there, they were just serving their respective countries.
As for the subtitles, I speak fluent Finnish, so I enjoyed the movie immensely. My husband, who is not fluent, wasn't particularly taken with the translation, so I translated for him and he enjoyed it more. All in all, though, I thought this was a fitting tribute to the young Finns who sacrificied their lives, and their youth - as my father did - to serve in the front lines and defend their country. Most importantly: KNOW YOUR HISTORY - FINLAND IS THE ONLY COUNTRY TO EVER REPAY ITS WAR DEBT TO THE UNITED STATES.
US DVD version cut by 70 minutes.......2007-04-13
Be forwarned! The US version of this film is 70 minutes shorter than the original version of 195 minutes. You are missing a lot! The PAL version, as far as I know, is only available in the EU.
Superb! .......2007-02-06
This is how war movies are supposed to be made. You feel tired by the end of this one because you almost feel like you were in those trenches with them. Outstanding movie making about a conflict which is often overlooked. Hollywood should take a lot of notes from this movie. Definitely belongs in the collection of any military history enthusiast.
SISU examined and explained.......2006-12-31
Any work of art must address the three aspects of our psyche: Intellect, Appetites, Spirit. This movie, unlike many others, addresses the entire psyche, and does so by weaving these three aspects through the soundtrack, the dialogue and of course the visual representation. After the first viewing, the actual historical account is told and the psyche is no longer overburdened with the obvious. Later viewings allow for a much more meaningful experience. In this, I believe that the production staff have succeeded in their task.
Finland being the underdog, does successfully thwart the massive Russian attack. Not being the aggressor and losing the advantage of first attack, Finland must respond to this attack of its country. But it is not a superior technology, nor numbers that is responsible for this victory of sorts. It is the spirit of man that allows for this page of World War II history to come alive, and if there is anything good from war, it is the ability for men and women to show the eternal and noble virtues within in each of us.
I was not born in Finland, but my parents were, and did raise me with more of a European background than Canadian. With some grade school level Finnish fluency, I found the subtitles to be mildly off target, but then again, there might be some disagreement in my interpretation too. While I would agree with other reviewers that sometimes it is difficult to read all of the subtitles, I am reminded by the fact that this movie was produced a number of years ago. I think that the movie can hardly be held to critical review for technical issues that were resolved after its production.
There is a word in Finnish, SISU, which has no English counterpart or translation. This movie while a wonderful rendering of this historic event, does in passing allow the non-Finnish speaking person a chance to understand what Finns mean by it.
I would heartily suggest this movie for its edu-tainment purposes, but if a History teacher were looking for something to engage children, this movie could very well do so. Being off the beaten path, the teacher would not find students who have already seen the movie.
Brave Finns on the frontlines!.......2006-12-02
One of the greatest, and most accurate war films made, yet little known by most English-speaking viewers. An army reserve unit is mobilized to man the fortified Mannerhiem Line, in the early days of World War II. The characters express all the usual concerns about the coming ordeal...and then it happens. The Soviet Union launches a massive armored onslaught against Finland. Despite Finland's lack of manpower, equipment, and supplies, they devasted wave after wave of Russian assaults. Finland had better-trained soldiers, repelling hundreds of thousands of expendable communist conscripts. In the years before, wisely foreseeing the inevitable conflict with the communist power to the east, Finland had a series of fortifications built in advance, and the Finns utilized these to maximum effect! This film portrays the frontline combat very well, but the entire war had various fascinating perspectives that should also be portrayed on film some day. To get a greater idea of the conflict, read the book, "A Frozen Hell" (which I have also reviewed).

Silent Night or Stille Nacht deserves DVD Steal Alert.......2007-09-10
First I want to say if you enjoy Hallmark style dramas you should go ahead and just buy this movie. Being a fan of most Christmas movies and reading a couple reviews here I figured for the price I couldn't go wrong. Well this is an excellent WWII drama, and the price is remarkable. You typically don't see prices like this on great DVDs very long. The only other movie I bought for such a bargain here was "Dreamkeeper" and that is a Hallmark movie. I highly recommend you purchase "Silent Night" before it goes out of print and becomes ridiculously priced. Linda Hamilton and the rest the cast are superb in this story based on historical fact. A few Americans and Germans had a Christmas Dinner together near the Huertgen Forest. One of the worst battles of World War II. Check out the episode in "Band of Brothers" on that battle or the movies "When Trumpets Fade", or "Battleground". I have only seen this movie available here at Amazon. You will be lucky to buy it or rent it elsewhere so I suggest you get it here.
Heart Warming.......2007-07-11
In the midst of a war, 8 people set aside their differences and come together to celebrate Christmas Eve. This is a very heart warming story. The best part is that it is based on a true story.
Silent Night.......2007-01-19
This has to be one of my favorite movies, not only at Christmas time, but I can watch it year round. The acting is absolutely great, the story line is wonderful, the Americans and Germans put their differences aside on Christmas Eve for the sake of this brave mother and her son. THE BEST !!!
my husband & Loved & he is hard to please........2007-01-14
It wase in WWII that even in war can be pease & Hope.
A Christmas Holiday "Must See"........2006-12-17
I first learned of this true story over 25 years ago when seeing a brief low-budget 35mm version produced by a religious organization. Though the quality of the movie was very poor, the inspiration of the true event was wonderful!
In this more current remake, Linda Hamilton portrays Elizabeth Venkin who host an unlikely household of Christmas Eve guest at the end of war-torn World War II Germany. Every person who I have shared this movie with have the same feeling of warmth and encouragement as they view this movie for the first time.
This is a must-see Christmas Season movie! One that if I don't have the opportunity to see it every coming year, my Christmas season will not be complete. The world would be in a different position today if it were filled with morally courageous individuals like Elizabeth Venkin!
