This gorgeous adaptation of Lucy Maud Montgomery's classic children's story is well worth watching with the whole family. Produced for Canadian television, it's one of those rare productions that actually sticks to the book and even enhances it through first-rate performances and an excellent script. Set on bucolic Prince Edward Island in the late 19th century, Anne of Green Gables is the story of Anne Shirley, an imaginative and headstrong orphan. When brother and sister Marilla and Mathew Cuthbert decide to adopt an orphan boy to help Matthew work the farm, they are astonished when Anne arrives at the train station by mistake. "What use is she to us?" grumbles the gruff Marilla. "We might be of some use to her," answers Matthew, who has taken an instant liking to the talkative Anne. As Anne grows up, her adventures are both hilarious and moving. It's a delight to watch as she forms a friendship with the beautiful Diana and her admirer--the dashing Gilbert Blythe--then dyes her hair green, cracks a slate over Gilbert's head when he calls her "Carrots," and finds a sympathetic teacher who encourages her to attend college.

Richard Farnsworth is perfect as the shy and gentle bachelor Matthew, who confides to Anne that he never went courting because "I would have had to say something." Colleen Dewhurst delivers a nuanced and powerful performance as Marilla, a seemingly cold-hearted spinster whose no-nonsense exterior conceals a warm heart. And as Anne, Megan Follows strikes the perfect note, maturing from freckle-faced orphan to elegant and poised young woman. --Elisabeth Keating

Solid story that teaches many important lessons. It's not just a movie for young girls. Richard Farnsworth was one of the best!

I love Anne of Green Gables and I ordered it off of Amazon with no problems. It arrived in the mail a week later. Perfect!

5 out of 5 stars Anne of Green Gables.......2007-09-02

Again I bought this DVD for my wife. I had given her Anne of Green Gables The Sequel several years ago and she had tried to find the original story of Anne of Green Gables but could not find it in local stores where we live. She loved it so much that after watching it she watched the sequel again and has now ordered the Continuing Story of Anne of Green Gables. It is nice to know there are still some nice, clean movies out there that have a good story and can entertain you without listening to vulgar language and watching violence.

1 out of 5 stars oh, lordy..........2007-08-27

This simpering little twit plodding her way through this series should be used as forced-viewing punishment for people who take organized sports too seriously. I suffered through an hour of this with my wife and I wished she's fall down a well and not come out. Or fall off a horse-drawn carriage that's going at full speed. Or, well, you get the idea.

5 out of 5 stars beautiful, intelligent and delightfully entertaining..............2007-08-26

This great 1985 production gloriously brings the characters from the "Anne" series, written by Canadian writer Lucy Maude Montgomery, to life. I remember well watching (and reading) this story as a small child. It was magical, then, and it remains so more than twenty years later. Anne (Megan Follows) is a lively and strong-willed orphan adopted by Marilla (Colleen Dewhurst) and Matthew (Richard Farnsworth) Cuthbert, siblings in need of a helper on their farm. Originally, they had expected to adopt a boy, but fate has other plans for them. Anne proves to be just what they needed. She brings them her youth, indomitable spirit and flare for getting into mischief. Along the way, Anne meets and befriends neighbor and classmate Diana Berry (Schuyler Grant) and butts heads with "would be" suitor Gilbert Blythe (Jonathan Crombie). Anne's slew of adventures and misadventures are a lot of fun to watch (especially an instance where she attempts to die her red hair auburn--turning it green instead!).

The strength of this wonderful film is in the engaging acting, warm direction from Kevin Sullivan and the luscious photography. You really feel like you have been transported to St. Edward Island in Canada, in the early 1900s. You'll laugh, you'll feel the pangs and poignance of Anne's trials and tribulations and you will absolutely lose yourself in the story.

Alan Rickman and Sigourney Weaver form the quintessential indie-film odd couple in this intimately observed drama that makes a memorable detour from the usual high-concept, special effects-laden studio fare. Rickman is in his element as Alex, a morose, laconic ex-con just released from prison. A tragic twist of fate brings him to a Canadian small town and the doorstep of Linda, a functional autistic woman with a decidedly anti-social personality. Weaver is a wonder in a fiercely committed, vanity-free performance. "I don't like normal people," Linda states, and neither does Snow Cake, the heart of which is clearly with the outcasts and misfits, including Vivienne (Emily Hampshire), Linda's vivacious, hitchhiking daughter, who bums a ride with Alex because he looks lonely ("Lonely people have the best stories," she observes) and Linda's neighbor, Maggie (Carrie-Ann Moss), a nurturing type who is very quick to take damaged soul Alex into her bed. This is a palpably heartfelt project (screenwriter Angela Pell has an autistic daughter) that--the unfortunate title notwithstanding--mostly manages to avoid the cloying or manipulative. The smiling faces pictured on the DVD cover suggest an upbeat romantic comedy, but Snow Cake is a slice of something much more filling. --Donald Liebenson

Description

Sigourney Weaver, Carrie-Anne Moss, and Alan Rickman star in this film about what happens in the aftermath of a young woman's death. Recently released from prison, Alex (Rickman) offers a ride to a hitchhiker, only to have her killed instantly when their car endures a brutal accident. Alex then approaches the girl's mother, and the events that unfold change his life and other around him dramatically.

5 out of 5 stars The must-see drama of the year!.......2007-09-13

This movie was fascinating and full of little surprises that made me laugh and cry alternately. One of the unique aspects of Snow Cake is that the cast is made up of sci-fi/action heavyweights! Sigourney Weaver is all too used to dousing slimy aliens with flamethrowers; Alan Rickman generally chews scenery as the sorcerer Severus Snape; and Carrie-Anne Moss will go down in history as the leather-clad, cool-shades-donning femme fatale of the Matrix trilogy. Yet here we get to see an overwhelmingly tender and subtle side to these actors, who are all absolutely brilliant in a small drama as well as their usual big box office outings. I urge anyone who has an interest in the human condition to watch this movie.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible.......2007-09-08

I absolutely loved this movie. I fell in love with the characters immediately. The plot was amazing. I also work with Autistic children and loved the way the movie was so accurate with the behaviors of people with autism. Heart touching movie everyone should see!

4 out of 5 stars "Your comments are interesting and tough to answer.",per Sigourney Weaver! .......2007-09-06

My name is Andre Jonathan, and I had the pleasure to see the premiere screening with the Cast,Director, and Writer of this movie at the 2006 Tribeca Film Festival. In addition, I was chosen from a few to comment, and ask a question to Sigourney Weaver personally during the Q&A. Moreover, my comment and question, along with my presentation I guess,to my surprise, was the only one to get applause and laughter from the audiance;in which Ms. Weaver's response was "that's a tough and interesting question to answer",and then she began elaborating for at least three(3)minuets to my question/comment). I don't quite remember what I said per se, but it had something to do with her advertent and/or inadvertent comedic skills I thought she displayed in a serious character role as an autistic woman! By the way, I thought the movie was touching, moving, serious, semi-provocative, and at times ackwardly funny! Furthermore, the overall CAST was COMPLIMENTRY & GREAT!!

Thanks,
Andre Jonathan

5 out of 5 stars A Gem.......2007-06-24

I saw this movie on PPV and had been waiting for it a long time. I initially wanted to see it because of Alan Rickman (Alec). He was wonderful as usual, but his real genius in this film was to sit back and let Sigourney Weaver (Linda) play off of him. Not that Rickman didn't have his moments, but Weaver was really outstanding. In one scene, Alec is sobbing uncontrollably and Linda looks at him quizzically and asks if there is something wrong with the tea. That's just one little gem of a scene.

Don't look for romantic fireworks or a dramatic ending in this movie. It's just the story of three people with their own secrets brought together by a tragic event. I found myself drawn into their lives, as they were drawn into each other's lives.

Once you see this movie, you will understand why I say it was "dalzious."

4 out of 5 stars DONT MISS THIS ONE.......2007-06-18

A long overdue reminder that it all starts with the script, quirky interesting.Nothing like this film will be coming out of Hollywood.Alan Rickman and Sigourney Weaver are both Amazing in there performances.

3 out of 5 stars Not my favorite season...........2007-09-09

"Ok, it is difficult for anyone to avoid getting stuck in a rut. My little voice was telling me that we should be doing more interesting or funny back stories. But what could I do? I was a big movie star at the time. After all, Quigley was about to come out."

I love Magnum P.I. I even have some trivia up on my web site. But the shows in seasons five and six kind of bore me. They don't have an edge to them. They're like a pasture or minister. Sure you like happy positive stories some times, but you also want to see the darker side of humanity. I think the biggest problem with this season is that the B-stories or side-stories do not have enough conflict. They're not sexy or nasty enough. For a TV show to be good, you have to have good side stories.

If you like Magnum P.I., read my book or watch seasons one through four or seven and eight. If you love, love, love Magnum then you might as well buy this one too. But I doubt you'll go to this box first when you have an itch to watch a Magnum episode.

5 out of 5 stars Another great season..........2007-06-26

This is yet another great season from the makers of Magnum PI. It is a great addition to my collection. You really need to purchase it to see for yourself.

5 out of 5 stars ups and downs..........2007-06-26

Every show has its ups and downs...and Magnum's downs are a lot higher than the ups of most shows...

5 out of 5 stars Best TV Show ever.......2007-05-17

Easily the best tv show ever, every episode is a delight.
I dont mind if some dont like it, but some of the reviews of this by so called fans are nothing short of insane....maybe these people cant recognise quality...let them go and watch Big Brother and find their IQ level there.

Great series, great main actors, great characters...everything is just right...cant wait to get every season on dvd...considering the 8th season is so short...why cant we have season 7 and 8 in one package?!

2 out of 5 stars Not Magnum at its finest hour, but necessary for the collection.......2007-05-15

Beginning with Season Five, the writers of Magnum P.I. began to tinker with the shows format. Something not out of the ordinary when a show reaches beyond the four season mark. While most of season five's episodes work with this new formula, season six tries to continue with this formula, but instead misses the boat more times than not. Gone are the days of Magnum swimming on the beach or hanging out at the club to meet a client. Higgins no longer bargains with Magnum for guest house privlidges, and their customary banter only happens occassionally. This was done perhaps, the emphasize the fact that Magnum was getting older, and several episodes stress the fact that he may soon want to do something else with his life. Even though Magnum is quick to point out how great Hawaii is, one can get the impression at times that he's searching for something with a little more meaning.

Overall, the tone of the season is darker and much more serious. Come to think of it, most episodes of season six are shot entirely out of Hawaii (Deja Vu, Going Home), and several episodes go by where you see no trace of the guest house or estate for that matter. Episodes like the previous two mentioned and "The Way of the Stalking Horse," are some of the year's bright spots. I give the writer's credit for trying to branch out, but Magnum's sharp decline in ratings at this time(Number 8 in 1984 to out of the top 30 by 1985) was an indication that viewers preffered the old formula, and that the show was running out of steam. All is well however, because season seven and eight revert back (for the most part) to the show's old formula. Although I have not seen all of these episodes, the one's I have (Missing Melody, Laura, Little Girl Who) are, in my opinion, some of the best of the series.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars "I made it Dad... why didn't you?".......2007-07-11

OK, so I am not the biggest Magnum P.I. fan to ever watch the show. Sure, I liked it when it was on... but come 1984, my interests shifted over to MIAMI VICE... and they never returned. Oh I still watched.. but to be completely honest, I never really cared that much if the show was on or not.

But...

When the Season Four premier episode entitled HOME FROM THE SEA first aired on 29 September 1983, I - like many other viewers - was treated to one of the most moving episodes of the entire Magnum P.I. series. I must admit that I only ever saw that episode one time... on the day it first aired... but it stuck with me for over twenty-three years. HOME FROM THE SEA was the only episode from the entire series that I vividly remembered for all of that time. It was the one episode that I told anyone and everyone about. It was the one episode that I tried and tried to catch when the show went into syndication. I never found it. So when Universal started releasing the series on DVD, I searched and I waited.

I purchased this boxed set FOR THAT EPISODE AND THAT EPISODE ONLY. And that episode alone warrants the five star rating. I cannot stress enough the impact this one show had on my psyche. I simply never stopped thinking about it. Just watch it and you will understand. I cried and so did my Wife.

I am sure that I will enjoy watching the rest of Season Four, and that may even cause me to want to buy some of the other Seasons. But all I really wanted is HOME FROM THE SEA, and now I have it. It only took twenty-three years for me to find it. I doubt if even Thomas Magnum could tread water for that long. If you are even remotely a Magnum P.I. fan, this is the Season you want because this is the Season with HOME FROM THE SEA.

FROM www.tv.com:

It's the 4th of July, and Higgins is playing in a polo match, T.C. is taking his baseball team to a professional game, Rick is out with his latest girlfriend on the King Kamehameha II yacht, and Thomas is observing his annual Independence Day tradition of a solitary day at sea -- until his surf ski is capsized in the wake of a recklessly driven speedboat and set adrift. Carried off further and further away from land by the powerful Molokai Channel, Thomas relies on childhood memories of his father's training him to tread water to keep himself afloat as he struggles desperately to stay above water and fend off a menacing shark. As the hours pass, Higgins, T.C. and Rick each have a sixth sense that Thomas is in trouble, and they team up to rescue him. Thomas approaches the twenty-four hour mark in the water recalling his wedding to Michelle and his father's burial -- on July 4, 1951 -- as Higgins scoops him out of the ocean, with T.C. in his helicopter overhead and Rick on the yacht nearby.

5 out of 5 stars Magnum P.I. - The Complete Fourth Season.......2007-06-28

Being Magnum fans I purchased the first four seasons as an Anniversary gift for my husband. We are really enjoying the DVD's.

We had them for a few days when a storm caused us to lose power off and on for 3 days...thankfully I had 3 of my four hour batteries charged for our compact DVD player. We spent 4 hours the first night of the storms watching Magnum. We had forgotten that the theme music had been changed, kind of strange at first.

We have been very happy with the quality of the DVD's so far and are anxiously awaiting for season 7 and 8 to be released.

4 out of 5 stars Cheesy from Childhood, But Still Golden.......2007-03-20

How is it that Tom Selleck is still so appealing, despite the clunkiness of an 80s sitcom? It's a cheesy 80s sitcom. But Tom Selleck still makes it appealing.

1 out of 5 stars Spoiled by DVD Quality.......2007-02-10

As previous reviewers have said, 5 stars for the show, and 0 for the DVD's. 3 episodes in my set had serious problems. Thank God Season 5's discs are not double sided. Hopefully, they will be better.

A ratings hit for eight seasons on CBS, the action-mystery series Magnum, P.I. makes its DVD boxed set debut in an impressive five-disc package that offers not only the entire first season, but some rarely seen episodes. Positioned in the old Hawaii Five-O time slot (Thursdays at 9) in December of 1980, Magnum quickly became a hit, thanks to the combination of smart and witty scripting, gorgeous locations, and the considerable charm of lead Tom Selleck as former Naval Intelligence officer Thomas Magnum, who gives up his position to become a private investigator on Oahu with the help of fellow Vietnam vets T.C. (Roger E. Mosley) and Rick (Larry Manetti). Magnum also provided security for the lavish estate of wealthy (and never-seen) mystery writer Robin Masters, which gave him access to the author's expensive vehicles (including a prized Ferrari), much to the disapproval of Masters's manservant Higgins (Jonathan Hillerman).

A rare series that skillfully blended action, humor, drama, and suspense, Magnum, P.I.'s first season gets the boxed set treatment its fans have been hoping for, with all 18 first-season episodes (including the two-part pilot, "Don't Eat the Snow in Hawaii") included on four discs. The fifth disc contains four rarely shown bonus episodes, including season 3's "Ki'ls Don't Lie," which featured a crossover plot with Simon and Simon, as well as its conclusion ("Emeralds Are Not a Girl's Best Friend"), which kicked off S&S's second season; the latter episode has never been aired as part of Magnum's syndicated package, which is another reason for fans to pick up and enjoy this long-awaited set. --Paul Gaita

    4 out of 5 stars Magnum P I season 1.......2007-08-13

Well if you loved the TV series how can you go wrong with this? It is so campy and the first episode is so good ("Don't look at the dogs work the lock. You looked at the dogs!").
If you love Magnum this is well worth the money.

    5 out of 5 stars Magnum, P.I. - The Complete First Season.......2007-06-28

5 out of 5 stars Great start to a great series!.......2007-04-21

I really forgot how good some of those first season early episodes were until I bought the season 1 DVD. "Skin Deep" is probably the most entertaining episode of the series. Other standouts are "China Doll" and "J "Digger" Doyle". What I enjoyed most was the 1982 crossover episode as the featuring Gerald McRaney and Jamison Parker from Simon and Simon from season 2. Also the Simon episode "Emeralds are a girls best friend" and although not as big a fan of later seasons, the 2 part season 5 opener w/ a young unknown Sharon Stone playing a psycho...big surprise there. I found it neat with the discoesque theme song for the first 10 episodes too. You could see how the 4 main characters found their niche as the season progressed.

Yesterday I received the product I bought. Excelent product and very good disposition from Amazon when the first product I bought lost it. Thank you very much.

4 out of 5 stars Surprisingly good for a "guy show".......2007-03-11

I never really watched this show on tv originally because it did not appeal to me. I bought the 1st season for my husband and wound up watching it with him. I was pleasantly surprised at how good it is. I would recommend this to women even if you are not a Tom Selleck fan. The character development makes this show so it's good to start out at season 1 and you'll appreciate it more. Each episode plays on Magnum and his friends and there are always interesting guest stars who everyone will probably recognize. Give this P.I. show a try.

Twenty-two early episodes of the breakthrough television series, Cagney & Lacey, are gathered in this Season 1 pack, though these do not include those with early Cagneys Loretta Swit and Meg Foster. Directed by Karen Arthur, written by a female team, and starring two filmic heroes of the feminist movement--Sharon Gless as Christine Cagney and Tyne Daly as Mary-Beth Lacey--the show pioneered on-screen presentation of independent, working women. With Cagney as the career-minded single woman, and Lacey as the mother/wife juggling job with home time, the two detectives serve as foil characters, the way other cop shows such as ChiPs, Moonlighting, or Charlie's Angels starred police with opposing opinions. But where other shows cast the foxiest people possible, Cagney & Lacey relied on character development instead of sex.

That is not to say that Gless and Daly aren't attractive, for indeed they are. Episodic narratives include Cagney & Lacey fighting female spousal abuse in "A Cry For Help"; date rape in "Date Rape"; racism in "Let Them Eat Pretzels," and many other issues targeted in the consciousness-raising feminist movement of the '70s and '80s. Many of the episodes, compared to the lightning fast-paced cop shows airing today, are slow and surprisingly non-humorous. But regardless of the show's occasional descent into tedium, Cagney & Lacey did much to promote the image of the self-made, multitasking woman. The two-part featurette, "Breaking the Laws of TV," starring heavyweights such as Gloria Steinem, critically places the show in TV history by contextualizing what was happening in the women's movement concurrent to the show's airing. Though the show may have its dull moments, it is fascinating to remember how television has changed over the decades. —Trinie Dalton

    Description

A ground-breaking show that re-defined its genre, Cagney and Lacey was something entirely new: a cop show featuring two strong and intelligent female detectives, with real lives and real problems--ordinary women doing extraordinary jobs. Now recognized as a true classic, this remarkable show tackles poignant social issues and explores the human side of hard-boiled detective work. Starring Tyne Daly and Sharon Gless as one of the most compelling detective duos of all time, this Emmy Award-winning drama is landmark television at its finest.

Cagney & Lacey was my favorite show on TV. I am very happy that it is finally coming out on DVD. I have been waiting a long time for this show. If you don't know Cagney & Lacey please buy it. The Show stars two of the Best Actresses television has ever seen. Sharon Gless and Tyne Daly. Watching the shows again was like visiting old friends.

    5 out of 5 stars C & L, how I missed you........2007-08-20

Cagney and Lacey has always been one of my favorites shows. The relationship between these two women in and out of work is so wonderfully written. Partners (detectives) working in a man's world is quite challenging. These characters were an inspiration back in the '80s and, I believe, that they still are.
I have been anxiously waiting for this to come out on DVD. It has been years since I have found C&L being broadcast in syndication. Well, I am not disappointed. This set may not have any frills and is double-sided but the quality of the picture on my HGTV is excellent. I enjoyed each and every episode.
This is almost like a drug. I am missing it already and want the next season. I need a C&L fix. I will purchase all episodes if MGM changes their minds and continues to release the rest of the seasons. In the mean time, I am thinking of buying a bootleg version of the series. That is how badly I would like to own C&L.

5 out of 5 stars Stupendous!!! More more more!!!! We want ALL seasons on DVD!.......2007-08-15

I can't say enough about Cagney & Lacey. I loved it and watched it when it was on the air, and literally raced through the DVD set. I was left wanting more episodes!

I really hope ALL seasons of the show get released soon. It's a top notch show, still very relevant, with superb acting and writing. The DVD extras are also good.

I highly recommend the set! It's a DVD set you will REALLY WATCH! And ENJOY!

Return to the Big Island for more adventure with Tom Selleck's charmingly roguish detective hero, Thomas Magnum, courtesy of this three-disc set, which compiles the entire second season (1981-1982) of Magnum, P.I.. The 22 episodes included here (among them the two-part "Memories Are Forever") crystallize the key to the series' success: an appealing blend of action, drama, mystery, and comedy, cemented by Selleck and his likable castmates, especially John Hillerman, who would earn a Golden Globe for his work on Magnum in '82. Highlights of the season include Magnum's attempt to stop an international assassin ("The Jororo Kill," with Tyne Daly), the arrival of Hemingway-esque author Mad Buck Gibson (Darren McGavin) in the episode of the same name, and the aforementioned two-parter, which reunites Magnum with a woman he thought to have died after marrying her while serving in Vietnam. The usual array of classy guest stars are also on hand for this season; in addition to the aforementioned actors, there are turns by Mimi Rogers, Vic Morrow, Vera Miles, Jill St. John, and Elisha Cook Jr. (who plays a much different character than his recurring role as "Ice Pick" in future seasons). And Magnum obsessives should note early appearances by Gillian Dobb, who played Agatha Chumley in numerous subsequent episodes, as well as one of Higgins's colorful, estranged half-brothers in "The Elmo Ziller Story." It's unfortunate that the set itself doesn't match the quality of the Episodes--extras are limited to second-season episodes from Knight Rider and The A-Team--but Magnum fans should be pleased to have all the episodes in a single set, and best of all, commercial-free. --Paul Gaita

5 out of 5 stars Second only to the first season.......2007-09-04

Enjoyed the second season very much and recomend it to all fans of Magnum. The background of Hawaii is well photographed in the series and adds to the enjoyment.

    4 out of 5 stars Magnificent Magnum.......2007-07-21

Most everyone knows this is an excellent detective series filmed in beautiful Hawaii. What I would like to mention that makes the DVD sets better than most is that the menu for each episode shows the airdate and a short synopsis of what the episiode is about. In addition each set includes a couple episodes of another TV series from the period. This set includes an "A-Team" and "Knight Rider" episode from their second seasons. So in addition to watching this great season of Magnum, P.I. I got to view a couple other TV series. I recommend all the Magnum series. My only complaint is the picture quality is not consistently sharp. Some parts do not look cleaned up. Otherwise I would give it five stars.

    5 out of 5 stars Magnum, P.I. - The Complete Second Season.......2007-06-28

3 out of 5 stars Magnum hits its stride.......2006-03-04

The first season of Magnum was plagued by poor production values, poor acting by the extras (and often the guest stars too), and a "sameness" that made watching episodes close together (as happens when you have a DVD) a little dull. With the second season, all these issues are alleviated to a great degree (although not entirely eliminated), and the show becomes more fun to watch.

It's not that the average episode is written much better - that will have to wait for later seasons, although the last disc in Season two is solid from top to bottom. No, it's that the characters are now in full form and the stories are richer for the interplay between the 4 main characters (Magnum, Higgins, TC and Rick). In fact, the extended universe starts to finally take the form it would keep for the rest of the series, with first appearances by Michelle (Magnum's wife), Agatha (if not the character, at least the actress), and the first of Higgin's legendary half-brothers (Elmo Ziller, from Texas, which allowed us to finally hear John Hillerman's real accent!). Similarly, the shows "feel" more like Magnum, leaving some episodes with bittersweet conclusions, and others without real conclusions at all - like the episode "Mad Buck Gibson" where we never learn if Mad Buck survives his last death-defying stunt. Why not? Well, it wasn't the point of the show, and the show ends just as it should, with Mad Buck appealing to Magnum mano-a-mano and talking him into allowing him to try hang-gliding to Maui.

Unfortunately, I had to deduct a star for the quality of the DVD set. Like all 2-sided DVD's, it's difficult to keep both faces clean, so there were issues with episodes seizing up, or the menu not initialising, etc. Similarly, the presence of the intrusive and extremely annoying Universal fanfare at the beginning of every single episode - luckily the first chapter break occurs right after the theme, but it's still annoying to have to skip ahead every time (Columbo Season 2 has the same thing - what were the Universal execs thinking?!). Finally, there are no extras, except a couple episodes from other shows (A-Team and Knight Rider), although these episodes do set off how well Magnum has aged relative to other pop-dramas made at the time.

1 out of 5 stars Greatest Show Ever,...DVD is JUNK.......2006-01-17

Another reviewer, Mick Black from Cleveland had it right. The video skipped and stopped cold on a few episodes. I carefully cleaned the disks, and the same thing happened. It's a shame one of the great shows off all time is not given it's proper respect by Universal. I didn't expect a lot of "extras," just the original episodes with no frills or technical problems. No such luck.

4 out of 5 stars Sellick carries this season through thick and thin.......2007-05-12

Magnum is a show that follows the "star + ensemble" formula that has always been a mainstay of the action movie and TV industries. Nowhere does the formula been more successfully used, especially in the later seasons of Magnum. Stories are often set up through the backgrounds of the supporting characters. But it's still up to the star, in this case Tom Sellick, to carry the bulk of the load. Luckily Sellick is up to the challenge, and I think this season relies on Sellick more than any previous season to keep the show interesting and entertaining. Whenever the plot gets a little silly - and that happens in every season of Magnum - Sellick's down-to-earth and lovable portrayal of Magnum makes the show a joy to watch.

So what happens in this season? The most important plot points are the return of "Mac" (reincarnated as a charming con man), the development of Carol, the district attorny, and the increasing use of Icepick, Rick's godfather-like underworld connection. Few, if any, of the episodes are among the best of the series, but there are lots of good shows here to make the purchase price worthwhile. "Mac's Back" is the most obvious must-have episode of the season. Unlike others, I find the 2-part premier of the season to be overly melodramatic and possibly the worst shows of the season. The other 2-parter, featuring a rescue mission to a Cambodian jungle village, makes good use of its time and even brings Higgins back into his military acoutrements.

Many fans feel the show decreased in quality over the last few seasons. I am of the opinion that the show continued to get better - mostly due to the richness of the back stories and the quality of the supporting cast. Season 5 may not be the best season, but it's still a lot of fun to watch. Although there are no extras on this DVD edition, at least this season finally puts to rest the technical problems that plagued the releases of earlier seasons: for the first time, there was not a single show marred by segments unreadable by my DVD player.

    5 out of 5 stars Magnum P.I. - The complete fifth season.......2007-03-14

If you are a Tom Selleck fan, this is for you!! I like the action and antics that Thomas and his buddies get into in each episode. I also love that this is set in Hawaii. You can almost feel the warmth of the sun. It's like taking a mini vacation with each episode.

    1 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2007-01-18

We own all the seasons of Magnum PI. While the content of this season is very good, the DVD quality is poor.

4 out of 5 stars Beginning of shows decline.......2007-01-17

As a huge Magnum PI fan only 2nd to Simon and Simon, season 5 was the beginning of the shows decline through some outlandish subject matter through some of the episodes. There's always been political elements to the show, but they seemed to stretch one's imagination beyond realism. Season 2 through season 4 are the 3 "must owns" if you were to only have 3. The shows subject matter was at its peak and was fresh during those seasons. The Vietnam era ended right around the time I was born so being under 40, I tended to enjoy the episodes most like season 2's football episode featuring Dick Butkus, Season 3's episode with Rick and AJ Simon along with Morgan Fairchild, as well as season 4's with Magnum meeting Alan Trammell and Lou Whitaker.

4 out of 5 stars Difficulties in playing the DVD.......2007-08-28

The series is one of my all time favorites, the episodes here are great. BUT whoever is responsible for manufacturing these disks should appear before the public in sackcloth and ashes, re-manufacture them and offer exchanges for free. I have FOUR DVD players and each one of them had trouble playing side one, disk 3, cuts 3 and 4. I have yet to go thru the other episodes on the back. However I did find that my computer DVD drive will play all the episodes with no problem. What's going on here? There is no reason for this shoddy production.

Had to drop 5 stars down on the series...because it deserves the high rating...these characters were apart of me while growing up and I watch every intro because just like M*A*S*H, it takes me back to laying on the living room floor getting pumped to see Magnum, Rick, TC, and Higgy baby.

    3 out of 5 stars I'm stumped. Is he?.......2007-05-06

Is it just my imagination or is there something really, really wrong with Magnum? There has to be. Here we see him getting in all these exotic adventures and, nearly always, landing a top-quality girl in the end.

Not just that, but the girls in question are invariably bright, seductive, and willing. Make no mistake: over the years, Thomas Magnum has bagged dozens and dozens of high-class babes! Rarely do we see him strike out.

    And yet, something is awry.

Come the next episode, the newly-won girl is nowhere to be seen. Magnum is once again free as a bird, with no prospects on the horizon. What's happening?

I can imagine if one or two of these women turned out to be total flakes: addicted to drugs, interested only in a one-night stand, besaddled with serious emotional problems, etc. But all of them?

I have a theory. Magnum, you see, despite his manly physique and swoon-inducing moustache, is possessed of private parts that are laughably diminutive. Or categorically non-functional.

This is the only thing that could explain how Magnum can never seem to hang on to a single girl, regardless of how taken with him the woman seemed at the end of the last episode.

I can see them now, storming indignantly out of the guest house, chuckling cruelly as they light a cigarette and hail a cab, refusing to waste another moment with our protesting hero, who stands wrapped in a bedsheet at the door, tears welling in his eyes.

The curiosity of Quentin Tarantino's Jackie Brown is Robert Forster's worldly wise bail bondsman Max Cherry, the most alive character in this adaptation of Elmore Leonard's Rum Punch. The Academy Awards saw it the same way, giving Forster the film's only nomination. The film is more "rum" than "punch" and will certainly disappoint those who are looking for Tarantino's trademark style. This movie is a slow, decaffeinated story of six characters glued to a half million dollars brought illegally into the country. The money belongs to Ordell (Samuel L. Jackson), a gunrunner just bright enough to control his universe and do his own dirty work. His just-paroled friend--a loose term with Ordell--Louis (Robert De Niro) is just taking up space and could be interested in the money. However, his loyalties are in question between his old partner and Ordell's doped-up girl (Bridget Fonda). Certainly Fed Ray Nicolette (Michael Keaton) wants to arrest Ordell with the illegal money. The key is the title character, a late-40s-ish flight attendant (Pam Grier) who can pull her own weight and soon has both sides believing she's working for them. The end result is rarely in doubt, and what is left is two hours of Tarantino's expert dialogue as he moves his characters around town.

Tarantino changed the race of Jackie and Ordell, a move that means little except that it allows Tarantino to heap on black culture and language, something he has a gift and passion for. He said this film is for an older audience although the language and drug use may put them off. The film is not a salute to Grier's blaxploitation films beyond the musical score. Unexpectedly the most fascinating scenes are between Grier and Forster: two neo-stars glowing in the limelight of their first major Hollywood film after decades of work. --Doug Thomas

4 out of 5 stars Movie's Real Star is the Music!.......2007-08-19

Quentin Tarantino pays homage to the blackploitation era of the 70's in this film based on Elmore Leonard's novel, "Rum Punch". Unlike the book, the film's lead character is black, not white. That change actually enhances the movie, making it more authentic. Pam Grier gives a Oscar worthy performance as the flight attendant hooked into a dangerous plot. Robert Forester gives one of his best performances of his career as bail bondsman, Max Cherry. Couple that with an all-star cast featuring Robert DeNiro, Michael Keaton, Bridget Fonda and Samuel L. Jackson. But what makes this film shine is the music. Fans of late 70's soul music will be asking for the soundtrack. Though a notch below Pulp Fiction and Kill Bill, Tarantino's "Jackie Brown" still delivers the goods! Very Good Film!

    5 out of 5 stars Jackie Brown.......2007-07-13

This pitch-perfect adaptation of Elmore Leonard's "Rum Punch" delivers the goods--and then some. With its cheeky dialogue, blasts of violence, and an eccentric gallery of characters, "Jackie Brown" exemplifies the kind of robust, genuinely thrilling material a Tarantino-Leonard match-
