A movie like this promotes violence. People ought not watch this stuff at all. Violence only begets more violence. This country has not benefitted from this battle or others. Let's have movies about peaceful places like Switzerland, which hasn't had a war in over 500 years.

Takes a great movie, add awesome sound and superb video and you get 1 Great Blu-ray! No Regrets, especially on an older movie such as this.

This movie hasnt delivered the story is ok but it doesnt satisfying and deep
like other films the picture quality is great especially the actionscenes with
all that mud and particles flying arround great sound too.

Black Hawk Down-Blu-ray.......2007-05-28

I'm previewing the Blu-ray version of this film.

Video: picture quality was slightly above average with some grain in dark parts opf the movie. In other part of the movie, the picture appeared really sharp and Hi-Definition-like. Overall quality was good, but not very consistent throughout the whole movie. I viewed this movie on Hi definition projector with 101" screen on the new Samsung BD-P1200.

Audio: Slightly above average

Finally, it's worth mentioning that the image froze only once, but still that seems to be a common and annoying problem with Blu-ray discs. Cleaning the BD with a microfiber cloth help sometimes, but it takes away the fun if you have to take out the BD and clean it, then put it back in the machine and wait for it to load and then you have to go to the selection menu and try to figure out where you were before the disc froze.

im sure most of us already know the movie but what comes as a pleasant surprise is the sharpness afforded by the HD transfer. every pore on the face and every bead of sweat jumps right out at you! in fact, anything with texture - war ravaged walls and rocks are all brilliant crisp and tactile. the bonus is the behind-the-scenes making of documentary (pretty long) which is very comprehensive and could be a video on its own. highly recommended.

I know a few guys who knew some of the actual crew from the Blackhawk, and everyone I've talked to from Colonels to junior enlisted say that this is the most accurate military film to date. Ridley Scott did an excellent job. All the actors did an excellent job and we had a slew of nationalities: American, British, Australian, Canadian.

The compelling story of the tragic outcome to what was supposed to be a textbook simple military mission fuels this well-told, often difficult to witness, 2002 Ridley Scott film. Recounting the 1993 daylight raid by US forces into a section of Mogadishu, Somalia controlled by agents of guerilla strong man Muhammad Aidid, and the eighteen-hour nightmare many of the American peacekeepers endured when that mission went horribly wrong, Black Hawk Down is a violent, frequently sad, realistically-depicted re-creation of events from that fateful time. In my experience Black Hawk Down is also the sort of film that needs more than one viewing, not only because the density and scope of the on-screen action can overwhelm almost anyone, but also because it is easy to lose track of who is who among the identically-dressed, similarly-featured young (shockingly young, to be honest) men who are caught up in the firefights that compose so much of the movie, and both the story and the actual human beings about whom it is concerned deserve to be recognized and distinguished as to what role they played in the battles, and what the ultimate outcome was for each of them. Black Hawk Down may or may not enter the pantheon of cinematic military classics, but in post-Vietnam/pre-Iraq War America, this depiction of violence and death in the horn of Africa was uniquely unsettling.

Great movie.......2007-07-14

If you like action movies and you like playing war games, this is a good movie to watch. The action is great. When I first watched the movie, it made me think that this was one of the most stupidly planned battles ever. But when I watched it again listening to commentary by the actual soldiers, it all made sense and didn't seem stupid after all. I think the movie makers and especially the news journalists like to portray this battle as a huge disaster because that's what gets TV ratings and sells magazines & newspapers. They always take an extremely negative slant on almost everything because most people pay attention to negativity and problems. The world isn't half as bad as the news people say it is.

Review: Deluxe Edition 3-disc set.......2007-06-24

I rate BLACK HAWK DOWN only below BAND OF BROTHERS as the best war dvd available (I don't include SAVING PRIVATE RYAN because of the Hollywoodized, heavy-handed ending) for its accurate and graphic portrayal of combat.
I have the 3-disc Deluxe edition, which I recommend over the 1-disc because it includes the History Channel's THE TRUE STORY OF "BLACK HAWK DOWN" and PBS' FRONTLINE: AMBUSH IN MOGADISHU. The tv versions give more information on the political situation which led to the battle (which are only briefly mentioned in the movie) and provide more accurate accounts of the battle (the movie had to change some details in order to fit the entire battle into the given time, make it easier for the movie audience to understand and dramatize certain events). The 3-disc set also includes features showing the enormous amounts of computer-generated special effects which are so realistic that I was unaware they were CGI (the first Black Hawk helicopter crashing is entirely CGI, the dust clouds during the helicopter landings are CGI, many of the explosions, etc. are also CGI).
In response to some earlier reviews, here's some clarifications:
1. In the movie, Pvt. Blackburn is shown falling from the helicopter rope after the helicopter suddenly swerves to avoid a rocket-propelled grenade. This is a dramatized version--the dvd commentary by the real Sgt. Eversmann said there's no real explanation for why Blackburn fell from the rope as Blackburn doesn't remember although everyone remembers the helicopter did suddenly jerk, but not to avoid a RPG.
2. Col. McKnight (Tom Sizemore) actually did walk upright during combat despite the constant Somali gunfire. This is mentioned in the book and the dvd commentary.
For the very best in movie portrayal of combat and war, I highly recommend this dvd set.

Are there parallels with the Allies' recent incursion into Iraq and the subsequent occupation? That was one of the questions I asked myself from a military perspective when I recently watched this film again. The missions seem ill-defined in both cases. The military opposition is overwhelming to the point where conventional weaponry and tactics seem outmoded and ineffective to accomplish what thumbnail sketch of a mission there actually is.

It often seems that moments of courage are a result of military expedience characterized simultaneously with a predilection of military ineptness. How a general could ever let his men enter a maze-like city surrounded by thousands of hostile inhabitants is beyond comprehension. Sam Shepard as that general exceeded the scope of his mission and his command putting his men in harm's way in broad daylight. Ridley Scott seems uniquely capable of ferreting out the military decisions that led to this debacle but places no blame. However, all the blame is up there on the screen if you choose to take note similar to the way Sam Shepard watches it on his TV monitor. Scott instead places the viewer into a 180-degree maelstrom of bullets, bombs, shrapnel, blood, sweat and tears. In 160 years of technology it is amazing how some of the images are reminiscent of the last stand at the Alamo. What has been learned in all those years? Every good war film needs a hero and Tom Sizemore gives the best performance as one hardened and dedicated officer. The most interesting shot in this film is where a tired and weary group of Americans finally emerge from the city covered in dirt, gunpowder, blood and grease and they are greeted by foreign United Nations troops wearing turbans. These UN fellows offer the Americans glasses of water served from silver trays with white linen napkins draped over their arms. So much for modern technology it would seem.

One thing that is certain is the strength of the cast assembled for director Ridley Scott's film. The cast includes Ewan McGregor, Josh Hartnett, William Fichtner, Eric Bana, Jason Isaacs not to mention Sam Shepard and Tom Sizemore again. They are a strong ensemble of actors making this film very realistic and thought provoking.

If you want love, romance, and bunnies, this ain't the movie for you.

It was the top action movie when it came out in theathers, and it still the best action movie now.

Imagine thousands of bullets and guns, gore, and tons of action, multiple it by 100 and it wont even come close to how awsome this movie is.

Brotherhood of War.......2006-07-10

I saw this movie in the theater shortly after I returned to the US from a year in the Republic of Korea (ROK) where it had played to great excitement among the Koreans. Although there were some overplayed stereotypes in the movie, I highly recommend it. I had several Koreans (in the ROK) tell me to be sure to go see the movie as they felt it accurately portrayed both the frontline and homefront brutality and complexities of the Korean war. The pain of the division of both their family and their nation surmounts any political agenda - save reunification perhaps. Some of the visuals could come straight from Saving Private Ryan; expect lots of violence.
