Take two male figure skaters, throw in a preposterous storyline, and you've got Blades of Glory, a surprisingly funny film that almost makes you forgive Will Ferrell for his back-to-back 2005 clunkers Kicking & Screaming and Bewitched. This time around, Ferrell eats the scenery in his role as a sex-addicted, cocky skating champ named Chazz Michael Michaels. When he gets into an on-podium fight with his nemesis and co-gold medallist Jimmy MacElroy (Jon Heder, Napoleon Dynamite), both skaters are banned from competing in men's figure-skating events. Forever. Their fall from grace is brutal. Chazz is forced to work for a D-list skating show, while pampered Jimmy is disowned by his wealthy and cold-hearted adoptive father (excellently played by William Fichtner), who only wants to be around winners. When Jimmy points out that he tied for gold, his dad cruelly says, "If I wanted to share, I would've bought you a brother." Flash forward 3-1/2 years and Jimmy's No. 1 stalker Hector (Nick Swardson) says he's found a loophole. Jimmy's been banned from men's singles events, but there's nothing that says he can't compete in pairs skating. After a chance meeting with Chazz, mayhem ensues as the two rivals team up to go against the brother-and-sister team of Stranz and Fairchild Van Waldenberg (played by Will Arnett and his real-life wife, Amy Poehler of Saturday Night Live and Mean Girls fame). The Van Waldenbergs will stop at nothing to beat the competition, even if that means literally beating up the competition. They have no qualms manipulating their sweet little sister (Jenna Fischer, The Office) to seduce both men to try to break up the team.

The finale will be no surprise to moviegoers who know that comedies like this aren't set up to make its leading men losers. But there is one brief skating sequence set in North Korea that will surprise (and shock) many viewers because of its brutality. Ferrell and Heder make a great comedy team. Though he has been accused of playing the same role since his breakthrough performance in Napoleon Dynamite and, to a certain extent, plays a similar type of role here, Heder is spot-on as Jimmy. He manages to convey innocence, bitterness, and longing--all within the span of a few seconds and while wearing a peacock unitard (You can understand why Hector is so enthralled with him). Look for guest appearances by real-life skating champs Scott Hamilton, Brian Boitano, Peggy Fleming, Dorothy Hamill, Nancy Kerrigan, and Sasha Cohen, who gets to sniff Chazz's jockstrap. --Jae-Ha Kim

1 out of 5 stars 1.5 hours..........2007-09-14

Of complete garbage. I didn't laugh, not once, through the whole movie. It's not funny. Period. My wife didn't laugh either, and we generally love Will Ferrell. I'm a fan of comedy, and there are some classics out there. This isn't one of them. Will Ferrell has went from original to old hat, simply repeating the garbage someone called a script and handed to him along with a paycheck.

"Elf" was hilarious. "Anchorman" was awesome. "Talladega Nights" and "Blades of Glory"? No thanks. That's an hour and a half I'll never get back again.

I just don't understand how anyone seriously thinks this is a funny movie. There is zero originality, the lines are pointless and uninspired, and the CGI and cable work for the ice skating scenes are garbage. Watch "The Cutting Edge" which was made at least 10 years ago, the skating scenes are at least 10 times better.

Go rent "Office Space", or "Tommy Boy". Those movies have character, substance, and will have you laughing out loud, and not because someone made some grade-school joke and called it humor. Those movies had real genius, and Will Ferrell did too, once upon a time. Come back Will, and ditch these movies where the main characters could be replaced by any B-list actor and be just as effective.

My honest opinion, I'd rent before you buy :(

3 out of 5 stars Well, it's a Will Ferrell movie.......2007-09-09

Personally, I think Ferrell has yet to find a film that really showcases his true comic ability. He did some fine work on SNL that none of his movies rival. That being said, this has some very funny, silly moments that will keep you watching. Heder is fine here. Craig T Nelson and William Fichtner - just weird. If you liked Dodgeball, you'll probably enjoy this.

3 out of 5 stars "Ice Blows' ~ Pairs, Personal Problems And The Iron Lotus.......2007-09-09

Synopsis: The film opens with the two best singles ice skaters in the world, Chaz Michael Michaels (Will Ferrell) and Jimmy MacElroy (Jon Heder) competing against each other for the last time. When the judges voting ends in a tie a fight ensues resulting in a lifetime ban from the sport for the two combatants. However their careers are revived when a loophole in the rules allows them to return to the ice as the first all male pairs team and compete in the Olympics. If they hope to win over the judges they must come up with a routine unlike anything ever seen before. They decide to attempt the legendary and deadly Iron Lotus maneuver. If done correctly they could win the gold, but if they do it wrong death awaits one of them.

Critique: The '07 comedy release `Blades of Glory' stars two of the funniest actors in the business, Will Ferrell and Jon Heder. The film starts out fast and funny but eventually bogs down with overdone arguing and the usual clichéd comedy bits that fail to raise the film to a higher level. `Blades of Glory' is enjoyable overall, but not nearly as good as it could have been however I'm sure hardcore Ferrell and Heder fans will feel otherwise.

My Rating: -3 1/2 Stars-.

4 out of 5 stars "Mind Bottling, Isn't It?".......2007-09-09

I loved Jon Heder in "Napoleon Dynamite" and have found Will Ferrell funny for years. I didn't expect this to be groundbreaking cinema, and it's not, but it is mindlessly entertaining and frequently hilarious, if a bit predictable and formulaic.

Will Ferrell plays Chazz Michael Michaels, a tough, dumb skater from the streets of Detroit who is apt to say ridiculous things (my title is one of his quotes; likewise he thinks Louis Armstrong went to the moon). Jon Heder plays Jimmy MacElroy, an effeminate rich pretty-boy who has always led a pampered lifestyle. They get into a fight at an awards ceremony and are banned from men's skating for life...or are they? Of course the plot requires that there be a loophole in the rules, and the loophole is that they aren't barred from skating in pairs' competition.

The two former enemies learn to get along through a cavalcade of entirely predictable, yet amusing, confrontations and situations and eventually become pairs' champions despite the nefarious tactics used by their evil opponents. There are many entertaining lines in the film, more than a few of which come from the color commentators (who include Scott Hamilton; "These guys put the 'bone' in 'Zamboni!'"), and Craig T. Nelson, who is hysterical as their coach.

Parts of the film are simply stupid (the "flying skates" segment at the end comes foremost to mind), but parts are inspired comedy (Nelson's journey into the dark world of North Korean figure skating was inspired). While the movie isn't exactly "Citizen Kane," it does deliver consistent laughs.

2 out of 5 stars 30 minutes' worth of humor stretched out for 90 minutes.......2007-09-08

I really wanted to like this movie, but it fell flat for me. Everything seemed very formulaic and predictable. Will Ferrell played his usual clueless-but-cocky character, and Jon Heder seemed out of his league as Ferrell's rival (and eventual partner). Some of the physical humor was mirth-provoking, but the off-the-ice scenes seemed labored. The highlight of the movie, for me, was the brother and sister team played by real-life spouses Will Arnett and Amy Poehler. I'd give this movie 2.5 stars if Amazon allowed that. I'm going with 2 stars to lower the average rating a bit.

3 out of 5 stars Will Ferrell gets all the laughs in this one. Great picture quality by hd standards/hd dvd features below........2007-09-14

As I said above pretty much all the laughs provided in Blades of Glory are provided by Will Ferrell who is becoming as bankable a box office draw as Adam Sandler. With Last years Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby taking in $148,213,377 domestically and Blades another $118,245,842. The latter film Talladega Nights provided much more effective laughs specifially the grace scene then Blades where a lot of the jokes fell flat and Jon Heder basically doing his Napoleon Dynamite impression once again. However there are plenty of laughs from Ferrell's character Chazz Michael Michaels an erotic figure skater who also suffers from a sexual addiction. The film is entertainment and the 93min run time doesn't drag on.

I would recommend if you have a netflix membership renting this one or waiting for cable and saving yourself the money, perhaps purchasing a cheaper version than the hd. Speaking of the hd the transfer did look great even compared to a lot of hd titles.

1 out of 5 stars Saw it at a friends house, picture quality is poor, audio is worse.......2007-09-02

For a next gen release this film is lacking.

----- Video -----
This movie was not encoded in the superior VC-1 video format, instead it uses MPEG-4. Comparing this movie to recent greats such as 300 that is encoded in VC-1, there is just no comparison. Why on earth did they go with MPEG-4?

Score: 1/10

----- Audio -----
Don't expect great audio from this title. The best you can get is Dolby Digital Plus 5.1, it's great for entry level consumers perhaps watching this title on an XBOX 360 add-on, but will not satisfy midrange to high-end equipment owners. The lack of Uncompressed Lossless PCM audio tracks and support for up to 7.1 channels was a real let down.

Score: 1/10

----- The film -----
While this film was funny and not the worst Will Ferrell movie I've seen, it was not nearly as funny as Talladega Nights. It sort of played on homophobia all throughout the movie, which was funny to begin with but quickly got old.

Score: 2/10

----- Summary ------
Video - No VC-1
Audio - No Dolby TrueHD or PCM, no 7.1 support
Film - Funny at first, but beats a dead horse

----- Conclusion -----
Really only recommended to the entry level crowd, the video and audio are not up to par of a next gen release. If you enjoy this genre and are using entry level equipment the go for it. Otherwise forego this title.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT COMEDY in HI-DEF GLORY!!!.......2007-08-31

This film is a riot!

Chazz Michaels was a kid from the streets who always ice-skated. Nobody ever trained him. He is a sexy macho beast on ice (laughs) who usually ends his presentations with fire. His greatest nemesis is Jimmy MacElroy, a wonder kid who was adopted by a millionaire and trained into becoming an olympic hero.

After both of them get banned for a HILARIOUS fight on the podium, they spend some horrible time trying to find a new life away from the thing they truly love: ice-skating. Suddenly, they decide they can still go back to business... but only as a couple. And that will not be easy because not only they have to learn to get along... but also they must beat the Waldenbergs - the perfid couple who want to preserve their "ice-skating darlings" status.

Aside from all that, this film gives us a HILARIOUS look at the corny side of ice-skating. It is a exaggeration, of course, but it is so funny you'll never look at ice-skating without remembering this film.

My two favorite moments:
a) when we see a recording of the Golden Lotus: a routine so dangerous it decapitated one skater. (i know it sounds horrible, but believe me: you'll be laughing like mad!!!)
b) the Waldenbergs' dreadful presentation as JFK saving Marylin Monroe from suicide. Her spewing the pills during a "ice-skating" Heimlich maneuver is hilarious.

Watch this film. It is guaranteed laughter.

This film is available in three editions:
DVD Widescreen
DVD full screen
HD DVD for those lucky ones who have a HD DVD player (in fact, this film inaugurates Paramount's exclusive support of HD DVD).

And there are plenty of extras:

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Comedy Destined To Become A Classic!.......2007-08-29

If you haven't seen this movie and love or even like comedy...then this movie is for you. I cried in laughter while watching this movie at the theater. I am definitely looking forward to seeing this movie in HD. As far as the snub towards Blu Ray with all Paramount movies, all I can say is business is business. Paramount had a choice to make their movies for both hd formats, however they decided not to. Hopefully those who own Blu Ray players don't hold a grudge towards the hd dvd format. Both hd formats have their own advantages and disadvantages, however these reviews should really just focus on the quality of the movie that was released. I give it two thumbs up!

Conversations With God was given to me by a friend. It had such an impact on me that I immediately ordered additional copies to pass on to others. This is a film that should not be missed!

3 out of 5 stars Positive, heartwarming, new age drivel.......2007-09-07

Interesting movie with lots of heart and a very unique and compassionate look into the lives of homeless people. The movie is a drama and quite slow-paced, but did not bore me. The acting is decent and the story compelling enough to keep intrigued viewers from dosing off.

I agree with the previous reviewer who said that this movie is more of a story about Neale Donald Walsch's transformation from poverty and homelessness to best-selling author than it has anything to do with a conversation with God; however, the entire movie builds up to the "encounter" with God so the story is effective to the plot.

While most people who are familiar with Neale Donald Walsch's writings will relate to the content, Christians who are considering viewing or purchasing this movie (because of its title) should note that this is not presented as a "Christian movie" nor does it contain a Christian sub-theme. The "God" in this story is a "new age" concept, which basically has nothing to do with God in actuality at all, let alone a biblical view of God. To put it in basic terms for folks that have no knowledge of New Age philosophy, Neale Donald Walsch's god is, in a certain respect, "his consciousness" (his "inner voice"), not really an external deity. Walsch's teachings include a mix of monism (all is one and one is all), pantheism (all is God and God is all), and is heavily slighted by experience and emotions rather than words (doctrines). Walsch was once asked, "Are we all gods? Or all part of God? Or are we all collectively God?" to which he answered, "Yes, to all of the above!" (just to give you a sense of his logic) Walsch sometimes quotes Scripture (where it serves his opinion) but ignores context. His beliefs include an ideology that there really is no right or wrong, no sin, no Divine Father to son/daughter relationship and everyone is basically good (even Hitler will be in "heaven" according to Walsch).

Fortunately, these expansive views of New Age spirituality are not focused on in this movie so, if a person can set the detail that Walsch is "new age" aside, they will likely be able to find some positive insights from the film. At the very least there is a quality emotional element to the movie and, as a previous reviewer noted, one of the rare few films that focuses on the homeless and with such a positive, compassionate perspective.

Personally, I'm not a fan of "guruism" and that's exactly what Walsch has made himself (IMHO). My personal conviction is that a person who has been truly impacted by God does not rush out to sell that experience for a profit. Walsch, like virtually all new age authors, have made themselves fortunes off their generic value, Hodge podge smorgasbord of feel-good theology (much like many televangelists as well). In observing Walsch's personal beliefs, there are moments when he touches truth and says things eloquently enough, but again, his more elaborate reasonings on faith (most of which do not align with anything one might consider biblical Christianity) are not effectively covered in this film.

Decent film, emotionally satisfying, but certainly not Oscar worthy and Christians will not identify with the content.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2007-09-06

This Dvd was very thought provoking and inspiring. The Dvd format is excellent because I can teach my 8 year old vital life skills without him having to read the book. Also the scene preview feature is great because I can go directly to the scene that I want to discuss without tiring myself out or my son by sifting through the rest. Great product!

5 out of 5 stars There may be more of a purpose to this movie that we realize..........2007-08-27

This movie was very well done, and Henry Czerny is remarkable in it. There is one scene in particular, where Neale is at his lowest and just desperate, which moved me to tears. When you watch the movie, you'll know just which scene I'm referring to. Czerny is superb throughout this film, and in this poignant scene especially.

As I watched this DVD, my husband came in to the room to sit with me during the last 20 minutes of the film. He watched quietly, then asked me "WHAT movie is this?" I told him, and although I read the Conversations With God books years ago, my husband does not share the same areas of interest that I do, so he had never heard of them. I explained the background of books and the author to him.

He wanted to see the entire movie, (which was surprising to me since this movie doesn't have a single explosion or car chase in it) so the next night I watched it again, this time with him. When it was over, he asked me if I still have the books. "Of course!" (I'll have those books forever). He asked me if I would find them so he can read them.

Now, this is a man who was raised Catholic and has felt disconnected from the church for quite some time. Not from God, but from church. There is a difference. I can't help but wonder if this movie will bring an entire group of people to re-discover these books.

1 out of 5 stars Conversations with God.......2007-08-25

I enjoyed the books in the series so I was excited when I saw the video and ordered it immediately. The video basically recounted how Neale Donald Walsch hit rock bottom and pulled himself back up out of dispair and being a homeless person to someone with a bestselling book and financial freedom. The video was done in a series of flashbacks that were irritating after awhile. I was disappointed that the scenes with Walsh giving talks, he appeared facetious and extremely self serving in his lectures. I would never have bought the video if I had been able to rent and watch the video. It is not one that I would have especially wanted in my collection.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Forgotten Heroes.......2007-09-06

This film follows a small group of colonial soldiers from different parts of the old French empire as they make their way through occupied Europe during WWII. It moves quickly from 1943 to 1945 and includes an impressive full-scale battle scene, moments of personal grief and happiness, and an impressive and saddening conclusion. Always present is the tension between the colonial soldiers and the nation whom they are serving.

You'll notice some similarity with Private Ryan, but it's a very different film. It's saying: "You made our country part of your empire and, because we resented your presence and tried to do something about it, you killed our families and said it was in the name of peace. When the Germans invaded, your resistance collapsed in 6 weeks. We heard the call and came to fight and die for you; but you wouldn't treat us as equals. You promised us a place in the history of the liberation, but you pushed us aside and gave the victors' laurels to Frenchmen. Then, when it was all over, when those of us who left our homeland and families, who lost friends and saw the terrors of war at first hand needed your help, you paid us a derisory pension which you then froze."

The French behaved towards their colonial fighters no worse than the Brits did towards the Gurkhas. Shame on them both.

The battle scene at the end it first-rate - a realistic piece, not some over-blown load of bollocks. It's a sad end to a good film.

5 out of 5 stars A glimpse into Berber history.......2007-08-29

Rarely will you find such an extradinary cast of actors and such a compelling story of injustice toward indigenous people who fought for the glory of colonial France, suffered continual discrimination, and sacrificed their lives without recompense. The film caused me to begin studying the history of the Magrib.

3 out of 5 stars Saving Private Ryan... with French North-Africans.......2007-08-12

Really, that's all it is. I could go on, but i really don't need to because all it takes is about 10 minutes of film time & you too can predict pretty much every remaining minute of the film. Take a few hard-boiled caricatures, give them a historical time & place in which injustice still burns (bonus points for the politically correct "Muslims are brave & selfless but Western Whites are gutless oppressors" theme), then sprinkle with at least a good dozen war movie cliches that even pre-teens have seen a hundred times. Let stand 10 minutes, then serve, while acting like no one has ever seen Saving Private Ryan. Voila!

5 out of 5 stars Samuel Fuller transformed into an Algerian-French epic.......2007-08-03

perhaps one of the best films of its gendre, both cinemagraphically and thematically. gives a wonderful insight into why shortly after WWII ended that the Algerians rose up against French Colonialism. Israelis would do well to watch this film closely to absorb the historical lessons there in.

4 out of 5 stars DAYS OF GLORY Indigines.......2007-08-01

The film even with subtitles, give ,s a very accurate description of Frances attitude toward its colonial troops, The same attitude prevailed in Vietnam. The attitude of the French is that colonial troops are to be used as cannon fodder and very expendable..

It actually underscores the power and distinctiveness of Gary Cooper's movie stardom that this isn't so much a true collection as gleanings from the odds-and-ends table. That's not a knock; three of the four films are solid entertainments and would be well worth recommending on their own. But the only thing unifying them is the beauty and enigma Cooper brought to them, and the professionalism with which he addressed these wide-ranging assignments.

Three of them date from the '20s and '30s and were produced by Samuel Goldwyn. The 1926 silent The Winning of Barbara Worth gave Western stunt man and bit player Cooper his first featured role (by accident--the actor originally cast didn't report for work!). A cowboy whose visionary surveyor father aims to "redeem the desert and make it one fine garden," Cooper's character is the third corner of a romantic triangle, ordained by the Hollywood caste system to lose lifelong sweetheart Vilma Banky to engineer Ronald Colman. Colman has lots more screen time than Cooper and bears the moral-ethical brunt of the eco-conscious drama; he's also surprisingly persuasive wearing a sweat-stained Stetson and trading gunshots with the bad guys (if this were a sound film, Colman could never have gotten away with it). But the camera and the audience are locked onto Cooper whenever he's on screen. In longshot or vulnerable closeup, he's already one of the gods of the cinema. As for the movie, the quality of the print is excellent, its clarity intensified by bronze, yellow, and moonlit-blue tinting that often seems on the verge of resolving into full color. Director Henry King shows a good eye for action and bold vistas, and a visual adventurousness mostly absent from his later work.

Next up chronologically is The Cowboy and the Lady (1938), and the best thing about this misbegotten movie is Garson Kanin's description, in one of his Hollywood memoirs, of how Leo McCarey sold the idea for it to Sam Goldwyn. McCarey was, of course, a comedic master (recently Oscared for directing The Awful Truth), and his exuberant pitch convinced Goldwyn and his staffers that audiences would "piss" themselves laughing at this romantic comedy about a daughter of privilege (Merle Oberon) who falls for a rodeo rider (Cooper) and learns homespun values. Goldwyn paid McCarey off, assigned some writers to the script, then realized there was no real story--"no there there," as Gertrude Stein might have put it. The resultant unfunny and unromantic endeavor oozes bad faith from every pore, with neck-snapping life changes foisted on the hapless Cooper and Oberon from reel to reel, and excruciating scenes (jitterbugging in a drawing room, playing house back on Cooper's ranch) that strain charmlessly for McCarey's patented brand of fey. H.C. Potter directed, understandably without conviction.

We and Cooper are back on track with The Real Glory (1939). The reliable Henry Hathaway helmed this second cousin to his and Cooper's The Lives of a Bengal Lancer, with Cooper as an Army doctor assigned to the Philippine Constabulary on Mindanao in 1906. The movie was well-received when it came out; encountered in the shadow of the Iraq War, its tale of U.S. occupiers trying to help the local populace "stand up" against a fanatical and murderous insurgency takes on new fascination. There are some amazing passages--two horrendous murders by bolo knife--and the final battle sequence puts the CGI-riddled action films of the present day to shame. But the most impressive element is Cooper, and we can't improve on the verdict of that astute film critic Graham Greene: "Mr. Cooper ... has never acted better.... Watch him inoculate [Andrea King] against cholera--the casual jab of the needle, and the dressing slapped on while he talks, as though a thousand arms had taught him where to stab and he doesn't have to think any more."

For the final film in the set we jump into the '50s--the century's and Cooper's. Vera Cruz (1954) casts him as a former Confederate officer who's ridden into Emperor Maximilian's Mexico, hoping to make a fortune in the new civil war south of the border so that he can rebuild his own devastated homeland. Costar Burt Lancaster (whose company Hecht-Lancaster was producing) plays another mercenary, a real sociopath, and it's fascinating to watch these two stellar icons of very different Hollywood eras make common cause--Lancaster at the height of his grinning-predator mode, Cooper an aging knight whose aim is still true. Director Robert Aldrich keeps finding dynamic uses for the SuperScope format and flavorfully fills it with sublime uglies like Ernest Borgnine, Jack Elam, Charles Horvath, Jack Lambert, and Charles Buchinsky-about-to-become-Bronson. Pieces of this movie found their way into the dreams of Sam Peckinpah and Sergio Leone. --Richard T. Jameson

5 out of 5 stars Terrific!: Gary Cooper Movie Legends Collection.......2007-08-25

In my opinion, Gary Cooper was one of the finest actors America has produced. The films in this set are excellent examples of his work. One, in particular, however, caught my attention and I have have watched it many times since buying the set. "The Real Glory" is seldom seen on TV, but has immense relevance to today's news. Set in roughly 1900 in the Phillipines, it describes the impact of a US Government decison to draw down US occupation forces in that country (following its occupation during the Spanish-American War in 1898) at a time when the indigenous Moro (Moslem) peoples were fighting viciously to drive the occupying American forces out. The movie begins with a US Army officers' discussion of a newly received order to withdraw, with a discussion amongst the US Army officers present of the likely murderous effect of withdrawal by the US forces on the non-Moro Phillipino inhabitants. Filmed in the late 1930s, the comparisons to today's headlines are remarkable. I HIGHLY recommend the set, if only for this one movie.

5 out of 5 stars FILM HISTORY LESSON REQUIRED.......2007-07-30

The title "Gary Cooper MGM Movie Legends Collection" is totally midleading here. Gary Cooper was never a part of MGM's hammy stable of contract players in the traditional sense although he did do some films for that studio. The films here aren't among them. "Vera Cruz" was released through United Artists. The other 3 titles were Samuel Goldwyn films also released through United Artists. Sam Goldwyn was never part of MGM. Film history readings will explain, to those interested, how his last name wound up as part of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer.
In my opinion, MGM has always been about self-aggrandizement and I guess they'll get it any way they can take it. That's too bad as it can create confusion for even arm-chair film researchers studying the old studio system of filmmaking. I always think of post-Thalberg MGM as the "blow-hard" studio with its process packaged films (although there are a healthy number of exceptions).
This Gary Cooper/United Artists collection features 4 terrific films that I highly recommend. I saw a clean print of the rare "The Winning of Barbara Worth" on the big screen a couple of years ago and Cooper's star quality is instantly apparent.
I highly recommend this set.

4 out of 5 stars An Entertaining 'Look' at Legendary Gary Cooper!.......2007-06-16

It's a shame that Gary Cooper, today, is largely remembered for only "High Noon", his Hawks and Capra films ("Sergeant York" and "Mr. Deeds Goes to Town"), and as Lou Gehrig in "The Pride of the Yankees"; in his day, he was as sexy and popular as Clark Gable, and more esteemed as a cowboy star than John Wayne!

"Gary Cooper MGM Movie Legends Collection" offers a selection of titles that will, hopefully, spark renewed interest in this most charismatic American 'Original'. While, sadly, the collection offers little in bonus features, and, with the exception of "Barbara Worth", appears to be unremastered (which is why I only give it 4 stars), each film is very entertaining!

"The Winning of Barbara Worth" (1926), was, of course, Coop's breakthrough role, after three years of stunt work and bit parts, and is a bona fide classic. As 'Abe Lee', the young cowboy/surveyor suitor of Vilma Banky, his sexy, natural style would steal the film from star Ronald Colman (in Colman's defense, his role was more restrained, and less interesting). The film, based on a best-selling novel about harnessing the Colorado River to irrigate the desert, garnered great reviews and box office, and gave Coop a spectacular 'start'... (5 stars out of 5)

"The Cowboy and the Lady" (1938), a 'modern-day' Western comedy/romance, presented Coop the way 1930s' audiences loved him best, as a slow-talking, incorruptible cowboy irresistible to women, but a 'gentleman', in the best sense of the word! Falling for the daughter of a Presidential hopeful, posing as a maid (Merle Oberon), he marries her, discovers the charade, then storms into a posh political dinner and speaks so much 'common sense' that her family moves to his ranch! With life-long friend Walter Brennan as his sidekick, this is a real charmer! (5 stars out of 5)

"The Real Glory" (1939), released shortly after his classic version of "Beau Geste", another 'action-oriented' adventure, though lacking the "Geste" polish and style. Coop is a military doctor in the 1906 Philippines, who, with friends David Niven and Broderick Crawford, attempts to help the Filipinos fight off an army of insurgents. Action was never producer Sam Goldwyn's forte, and the film lacks the warmth of a "Gunga Din", although it does offer a rousing climax... (2 1/2 stars out of 5)

"Vera Cruz" (1954), produced by Burt Lancaster and Harold Hecht, is a spectacular, large-scale western, filmed in Mexico. Ex-Confederate Cooper and bandit Lancaster are uneasy partners guarding Denise Darcel and millions in gold, during the Mexican Revolution. While the aging Coop wasn't well during production, he still gives a solid performance, although overshadowed by Burt's flashy portrayal; the film offers a
fabulous supporting cast, including Ernest Borgnine, Charles Bronson, Cesar Romero, and Jack Elam. "Vera Cruz" was a major influence on Sergio Leone, and has achieved legendary status, among fans of the genre! (5 stars out of 5)

There is a LOT to enjoy, in this Gary Cooper collection!

5 out of 5 stars Great collection of films by Coop.......2007-05-17

Gary Cooper is my favorite actor and this is an excellent collection to showcase his diversity as an actor.

The Winning of Barbara Worth is a silent film made in 1926 and was his first credited screen appearance. The story revolves around a young woman named Barbara Worth, her family and other members of the town they live in out in the Nevada desert where they are trying to reroute the Colorado river in order to irrigate the town and make it more habitable. After a year of appearing in movies as a stunt rider, a 25 year old Gary lobbied to win the supporting role of Abe Lee, the son of the surveyor who is working on the irrigation project and a childhood friend of Barbara who he is also in love with. He had already been hired to be a stunt man but he wanted to try his hand at actual acting. They had already cast that part but the actor who was to play it was still finishing another movie. As it became clear he would not be able to make it they gave Gary the part. The irrigation project is successful and the river is diverted but unfortunately after a short time the system is in danger of failing and flooding the town. Gary's character must endure a 24-hour horse ride into town from the dam site to warn them. He is supposed to arrive at Barbara's house and knock on the door. When it is opened he is to say the dam is about to break and then fall flat on his face worn out from his long, arduous journey. He absolutely nailed the scene and indeed he was so good that the studio was afraid he would end up being the star of the picture and not Ronald Colman who plays the lead and is the son of the man in charge of the dam construction project. They were instructed to either cut that scene or reshoot it with Colman making the journey instead, they opted to cut it so unfortunately it does not appear in the film. However this scene as well as his others gave everyone a glimpse of the wonderul, natural acting ability Gary had even that early in his career. This movie was a huge hit when it was originally released and it has an interesting story and incredible special effects as seen when the dam does break and the town floods.

The Real Glory was made in 1939 and is set in the Phillipines during the early 1900s. Gary plays an army doctor named Bill Canavan and his outfit is part of a small group of soldiers that are left on the island to try and help the natives defend themselves from other warring tribes. It is a very good adventure story with lots of scenes shot in the jungles and also in raging rivers. There's a nice love story mixed in and the characters are well developed and very likeable.

Vera Cruz was made in 1954 by Burt Lancaster's production company and he costars with Gary in this very entertaining western set in and filmed in Mexico. Gary and Burt play two men who sell their services as soldiers of fortune to the highest bidder during the Mexican revolution of 1866. They end up on the side of the emperor and are charged with protecting a lady friend of the emperor on her journey to Vera Cruz. However it gets complicated when the two men realize that along with the beautiful woman they are also transporting a large chest of gold that is going to be used to buy weapons. They along with the woman played by Denise Darcel hatch a plan to make off with the gold themselves. Burt and Denise for selfish reasons but Gary intends to give it to the people who are fighting to oust the emperor. There are many wonderful scenes including displays of fancy sharp shooting at the emperor's palace and also of a festival in a small Mexican town with brightly colored costumes and decorations. Wonderful acting performances all around and a very entertaining film.

The Cowboy and the Lady was released in 1938 and is a very funny, charming story about a wealthy young woman played by Merle Oberon whose father is running for president. She has a very boring life and is not allowed to have much fun so one night she rebels and goes to a night club to dance but unbeknownst to her it's also a gambling den which is raided by the police. In order to keep her out of any more trouble her father sends her to his house in Palm Springs. Here she meets a cowboy played by Gary who is in town for the rodeo. He's from Montana (in real life he was from Montana) and he's making the rodeo circuit looking for a wife. She pretends to be a ladies maid so no one will discover her real identity of a presidential candidates daughter and she and Gary fall in love. He proposes to her but she brushes him off because she knows her father wouldn't approve of her marrying a cowboy. Her heart gets the better of her however and she catches the boat he's sailing to Galveston on just as it's leaving. While on the trip they get married and she decides to head back home to Palm Springs while he finishes up his tour with the rodeo then they will meet back up at his Montana ranch. However before that can happen he discovers that she lied to him about who she was. But don't worry, it has a happy ending and is just a joy to watch. My favorite scene is of Gary on his ranch pretending to play house in the new home he's building. It's just a frame so all the workers on the ranch can see him pretending to seat his wife at the dinner table and then also pretending to eat. When he's caught he invites them all inside and serves them imaginary drinks!!!

One of the very best films about the Civil War, this instant classic from 1989 is also one of the few films to depict the participation of African American soldiers in Civil War combat. Based in part on the books Lay This Laurel by Lincoln Kirstein and One Gallant Rush by Peter Burchard, the film also draws from the letters of Robert Gould Shaw (played by Matthew Broderick), the 25-year-old son of Boston abolitionists who volunteered to command the all-black 54th Regiment of the Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry. Their training and battle experience leads them to their final assault on Fort Wagner in South Carolina, where their heroic bravery turned bitter defeat into a symbolic victory that brought recognition to black soldiers and turned the tide of the war. With painstaking attention to historical detail and richness of character, the film boasts superior performances by Denzel Washington (who won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor), Morgan Freeman, Cary Elwes, and Andre Braugher. Directed by Edward Zwick (co-creator of the TV series thirtysomething), this unforgettable drama is as important as Schindler's List in its treatment of a noble yet little-known episode of history. --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars This Movie helped me understand the plight of African American Civil War Soldier .......2007-09-09

If you have never seen this movie, you are in for a treat!

After having watched "GLORY" for the 40th time, it re-enforced these key points: At every turn, whether it was clothing, food or pay, the Civil War, African American soldier was at best given 2nd rate treatment. Despite this, he was still expected to perform like any other soldier in the Union Army.

A common re-occurring theme throughout the movie is how each character would boldly (or reluctantly) step forward to accept greater responsibility and in the end evolve into a stronger person. Examples of this: Colonel Shaw accepting command of the 54th, Morgan Freeman's character reluctantly accepting SGT stripes, an illiterate, freed slave learning to read, Thomas refusing to be sent back despite being shot and finally the greatest moment in the film, Private Tripp (Denzel Washington) lifting "Old Glory" from a fallen soldier's hands despite a lifetime of beatings by slave masters and having a long standing Hatred for anything "White".

In a sense, this movie wasn't really about a war with the Confederacy. It was instead, a movie about a collection of separate personal battles. In the end, each man doing their best to overcome their individual "weaknesses" or doubts to contribute to the greater Good.

My compliments to the producers and actors for creating what I consider the Greatest "War" film of all-time

5 out of 5 stars "We men, ain't we?" "Uh..... we men, ain't we?".......2007-08-07

GLORY was on cable today and, even though there was just an hour left, I thought I'd watch it, even though I'd seen it a gazillion times before. I watched it to be amazed, yet again, at the unbelievable talent of the performers. Denzel W. was magnificent as always and certainly deserved his Oscar, but I believe Matthew B. was equally as good. A few moments before the battle at Ft. Wagner, he stood by the ocean and the look on his face was heart-shattering. You could tell what he was thinking. His facial expressions said more than a thousand words. He was just unbelievably outstanding in the role of Shaw.
I saw my first movie at age 5; nearly 60 years ago and of all the great movies I've had the pleasure of viewing, none of them touched me like Glory. And none ever will.
If you're one of the few who hasn't seen this movie, you simply must see it. Rent it, buy it, tape it..whatever, but you musn't miss out on, what I believe, is the best movie ever made.

5 out of 5 stars A Civil War Masterpiece!.......2007-07-29

"Glory" is the type of film you don't see everyday; it combines fine acting, good cinematography, and an exceptional musical score to make a powerful as well as enjoyable film. The battle scenes are well shot and realistically brutal. The film has very good sound as well. The scenes leading up to the tragic assault on Fort Wagner, the assault itself, and the aftermath are some of the most moving in the film. Overall, an excellent film.

5 out of 5 stars Glory.......2007-07-16

This portion of our history was greatly told, as well as being kept authentic in clothes, life styles and attitudes.

5 out of 5 stars They, too, were soldiers..... .......2007-07-06

Freed Slaves fighting for their own freedom... seems like an odd concept but it's true. Freed from one bond of servitude, these men of color were chained to another bond of servitude, the U.S. Army. Battling for freedom and equality that was nothing if not weak and half-imaginary, these brave men fought valiantly to earn a previously-unsung spot in history.

Denzel Washington and Morgan Freeman lead a magnificent ensemble cast in a movie that is about more than just a war. It's about an epic struggle. A struggle between men, between races, between thoughts, between ideas, between societies and between past and future.

The bravery of the men depicted in this movie should never again be forgotten. The unselfish sacrifice and the reward they were denied for so long should stand as a lesson for all time. They were given nothing though they were expected to give their all in the service of a country that hated them, that thought they were no more valuable than a horse, a mule or the dog sitting on the front porch.

The courage and the humility is must have taken... it gives me shivers just thinking about it.

Don't be surprised if you feel a dry, tickling sensation in the back of your throat after watching the slam-bang racing documentary Dust to Glory. It's probably from the lingering sand and silt spewed from the knobby wheels of an array of machines that skitter from one end of the Baja Peninsula to the other. Using 90 cameras in a variety of formats, director Dana Brown captures the giddy danger of the race with truly visceral force. In 1967, a few California thrill-seekers had the Eureka spirit to take their homemade race cars for some whooping-up in the wide-open land just a few hours away. Since then, the Baja 1000 has turned into a party-fueled happening that's more akin to Burning Man than the Indy 500. It's billed as the world's longest nonstop race, running point-to-point for 1,000 miles through the Mexican desert from Tijuana to La Paz--pretty much the entire length of Baja.

Dana Brown is the son of Bruce Brown, whose 1966 film The Endless Summer sparked a surfing craze, and still holds up as an incomparable ode to the existential surfing lifestyle. Dust to Glory is by no means so profound and uses more of a Warren Miller thrill-marketing style (he of the annual throwaway extreme-skiing films). Cameras swoop down from helicopters, careen through silt, and are put into tracks over which vehicles pass at extreme speeds. In spite of the adrenaline rush, Dust to Glory is ultimately more about what people think about the higher implications of the competition. One veteran finisher describes it this way: "It's like having all 10,000 close calls of your life in one day. It makes regular life feel like slow-motion." --Ted Fry
