Undoubtedly the first movie in history to have played in theaters with three different endings (depending on which theater you attended), Clue is a silly whodunit based on the familiar board game featuring Colonel Mustard, Mrs. Peacock, and all the other usual suspects. A broadly comic cast play the sundry suspects gathered in a mansion to solve a murder, knowing that one of their numbers is the culprit. Michael McKean, Eileen Brennan, and Tim Curry are the best of the bunch, and the film is as lightweight an experience as a round of the game itself. Directed by Jonathan Lynn (My Cousin Vinny). The video release contains all three endings. --Tom Keogh
Customer Reviews:
A Tim Curry Showcase.......2007-09-04
The classic board game comes to life in this film. A bunch of characters have been summoned to a strange mansion where they are given aliases. Eventually they meet a strange character named Mr. Body. When he is mysteriously killed the fun really begins. Who killed Mr. Body? The characters don't know and they all suspect each other. The police are on the way and everyone could be guilty. The only hope is to solve the murder before the police arrive.
Despite the strong cast this movie really showcases Tim Curry the most. The film was originally released in three versions, each with a different ending. On this disk you can choose to watch the theatrical release with a random ending or you can watch the video release that includes all three endings back to back. Other than that, there are no real features other than the basics (chapter menu, subtitles, etc). The story works well and moves at a madcap pace obviously inspired by movies such as Murder By Death and The Cheap Detective while still managing to make the plot and action true to the board game. A good choice if you are looking for a zany comedy. Check it out.
Finally saw Clue for the first time last night.......2007-08-17
Even though I was only on this planet one year before Clue was released you would think I would have watched this little gem by now. I loved all the characters (especially Tim Currey) and the murder/mystery aspect made it even more enjoyable. I saw it for free, but now I just ordered my copy here. I suggest you do the same, if you weren't smart enough to already do so years ago. Prepare to sit back, relax and laugh of course!
256 5-Star Recommendations Should Mean Something.......2007-08-02
It means you should see this film, that is if you haven't already. There are few movies which I would give a 5-star rating to and this is one of them. The movie is only 90 minutes in length and very easy to sit through. It has a nice mix of both verbal and physical comedy. It takes multiple viewings to catch all that's going on. But, it isn't like you have to sit and concentrate or you will miss something, totally the opposite. This is a fun movie. Just put it on and relax.
The basic synopsis is: guests are invited to a isolated country mansion for dinner. They are confronted with the fact that they have something in common, they are all being blackmailed. Locked in the house with the blackmailer, murder (and comedy) ensues. There are 3 endings to the movie which you can program to either play one after the other or just one at random.
The only disappointing thing to the DVD is the lack of extras. I was hoping for a 20-year anniversary edition filled with extras, but alas.
Clue.......2007-07-03
Another great classic! You can't go wrong buying this movie. It's still good and funny no matter how many times you've seen it.
hilarious movie.......2007-06-02
This is one of my favorite movies and has been since I was a little kid. I'm not sure it would hold up to most people's tastes, but it makes me laugh every time. Some of the best movie quotes made into inside jokes. Playing the game when I was little only made some of the references more amusing.
One of the best parts is the end - there are three! You can watch one randomly or all three. Something I wish would happen more often with silly movies made nowadays.

Before Harrison Ford assumed the mantle of playing Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan hero in Patriot Games, Alec Baldwin took a swing at the character in this John McTiernan film and hit one to the fence. If less instantly sympathetic than Ford, Baldwin is in some respects more interesting and nuanced as Ryan, and drawing comparisons between both actors' performances can make for some interesting postmovie discussion. That aside, The Hunt for Red October stands alone as a uniquely exciting adventure with a fantastic costar: Sean Connery as a Russian nuclear submarine captain attempting to defect to the West on his ship. Ryan must figure out his true motives for approaching the U.S. McTiernan (Predator, Die Hard) made an exceptionally handsome movie here with action sequences that really do take one's breath away. --Tom Keogh
Description
Based on Tom Clancy's bestseller, directed by John McTiernan (Die Hard) and starring Sean Connery and Alec Baldwin, THE HUNT FOR RED OCTOBER sweats with high-tech anxiety and the tension of men who hold Doomsday in their hands. A new technologically-superior Soviet nuclear sub, the Red October, is heading for the U.S. coast under the command of Captain Marko Ramius (Connery). The American government thinks Ramius is planning to attack. A lone CIA analyst (Baldwin) has a different idea: he thinks Ramius is planning to defect, but he has only a few hours to find him and prove it - because the entire Russian naval and air commands are trying to find him, too. The hunt is on!

Hunt for Red October, Outstanding.......2007-09-09
This copy replaces a destroyed VHS copy. Giant of a movie. Watched it many times, but when played it is always the first time. A good nail biter.
The Hunt for Red October.......2007-09-01
Great movie, Sean Connery played his role outstandingly. The Hunt for Red October (Special Collector's Edition)
Like, so 80's.......2007-06-24
This is a really good yarn, but the film adaptation is marginal - Connery and Baldwin are real, compelling, and entertaining, but the other actors leave much to be desired. Some really good shots of underwater scenes, and a good suspense level, but the acting could add a lot to this film.
The hunt for Red October.......2007-05-27
Connery at his best. A fantastic film. Definitely an owner movie.
Excellent Movie.......2007-05-02
I can't stand Alec Baldwin, but he did well in his first major motion picture. Sean Connery was good as he always is. I liked everything about it. The music is good. The special effects don't match these days, but I can live with it. A very dramatic, well acted movie I think.

Cute but silly, this 1983 cautionary fantasy stars Matthew Broderick as a teenage computer genius who hacks into the Pentagon's defense system and sets World War III into motion. All the fun is in the film's set-up, as Broderick befriends Ally Sheedy and starts the international crisis by pretending while online to be the Soviet Union. After that, it's not hard to predict what's going to happen: government agents swoop in, but the story ends up in the "hands" of machines talking to one another. Thus we're stuck with flashing lights, etc. John Badham (Saturday Night Fever) directs in strict potboiler mode. Kids still like this movie, though. The DVD release has a widescreen presentation, theatrical trailer, Dolby sound, director commentary, optional English, French and Spanish subtitles. --Tom Keogh

Classic to share with a new generation.......2007-08-08
I've had a great time sharing this title with my kids. It's a bit of a nostalgic look back at the era of my own youth. If you don't spend much time on the sappy "no one wins global thermonuclear war" message, it's quite fun to watch.
good movie.......2007-08-07
When I watched this movie for the first time, I was only a teenager and I loved it. Now that I got to watch it again, I loved it again, but I had to add some nostalgia and good memories to it this time!
The movie is cool, BUT THE SPANISH SUBTITLES WHAT ABOUT IT???.......2007-07-10
I was expecting the new releases of this movie can be now with spanish subtitles, but I'm comfirming now many spanish-talking people can't enjoy the movie because the MGM guys failed in the final edition and they never put the spanish subtitles.
The movie is great, nice 80's value, cool older remembranza but all of us who were expecting to find the spanish subtitles option active now are deceptioned.
Bad move for the latin-american talkers MGM.
Instant Teen Classic.......2007-06-28
In the era when nuclear threat was real and era of the Personal Computer birth, this film with an excellent story played by the wisecracking young Mathew Broderick and the really young Ally Sheedy (What happen to her she was really good and pretty) introduce us to the world of computers and hacking in the era of Cold War Tech with two countries fighting for supremacy and they stuck in the middle.
This film makes me go to college and study Computer Science, John Badham excellent direction and the Art Background is superb.
This Classic has to be in your collection if you where young in that time and if you haven't see it, would be educational to see what computers look like in the early eighties and what they could do.
It Takes Two Hands To Handle A WOPR.......2007-06-10
All storytelling revolves around three themes: Man against Man, Man against Nature, and Man against Himself. In the latter half of the Twentieth Century, a fourth paradigm was added, that being Man Against Machine. Largely told in the cinematic mode, Man against Machine has given us any number of low-budget American International Pictures releases, as well as such classic films as FAIL SAFE, DR. STRANGELOVE, COLOSSUS: THE FORBIN PROJECT, 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY, the TERMINATOR films, THE MATRIX and its sequels, and WAR GAMES.
WAR GAMES is a late Cold War Era entry (1983), and probably the only Teen Angst movie of this kind. Despite the inherent weaknesses of the Teen Angst genre, WAR GAMES manages to have been (and remain) satisfyingly entertaining, even after a quarter century. WAR GAMES remains timeless.
David Lightman (played by a pimple-faced, squeaky Matthew Broderick) is an underacheiving teenage computer genius who spends his time entertaining himself by hacking into the school computer and changing people's Grade Point Averages. Somehow, David manages to hook up with the pretty and popular Jennifer (played by a presumptively virginal Ally Sheedy). While trying to impress Jennifer with his pocket-protector machismo, David hacks into what he believes to be an online War Gaming site. Presented with a whole plethora of possible games, David, of course, skips over such boring choices as tic-tac-toe, poker, chess, and even the intriguingly named Falken's Maze to play Global Thermonuclear War.
David HAS hacked into an online War Gaming site. Unfortunately for David, and for us, it's NORAD. Having just completed a study showing that human button-pushers won't push their buttons in the event of an attack, NORAD has given the ultimate responsibility for button-pushing to a new computer, WOPR (the acronym is a little vague). WOPR doesn't realize that David is a hacker. WOPR also doesn't know that it's all a simulation. So WOPR starts World War III. David and Jennifer, realizing that it is all a terrible misunderstanding, spend the rest of the film trying to turn off the rambunctious little toaster oven. The ending is a Cold War parable.
After two and a half decades part of the fun of watching WAR GAMES is looking at all the quaint high-tech antiques. The computer geeks are an army of screaming, whining, barely toilet-trained four-eyed migraine makers. David's modem is a hard dock model that basically swallows telephone receivers. Reel-to-reel tape drives still look impressive. 5.25 disk drives are on the cutting edge. PCs as such don't exist, but 8088 integrated monitor-dual floppy drive-keyboard models are everywhere. No one's heard of the Graphical User Interface yet, and everything is reduced to green typing on black screens, the equivalent of computer cuneiform. DOS doesn't and Windows wasn't. Amazingly, David's home dinosaur can turn the typed word into an audio feed, allowing WOPR to talk. Tres cool, man!
As for the WOPR itself, it is appropriately named, being about a third of the size of a typical Burger King restaurant. Very well endowed with more beeping and flashing things than a Vegas Casino, WOPR has about as much computing power as an abacus, and works just about as well, but it is pretty to look at.
Even though the WOPR couldn't play a DVD, your computer can, and WAR GAMES is a fun popcorn-and-soda flick that's worth having in your collection.

The miracle about Miracle is that it gets so many details right in telling its 24-year-old story about the historic victory of the U.S. hockey team at the 1980 Olympic Games. It's typical for Hollywood to compromise such period details as hairstyles and fashion when catering to a contemporary audience, but Miracle looks and feels right in every detail, capturing the downbeat mood of post-Watergate America while showing how obsessively determined Minnesota hockey coach Herb Brooks (Kurt Russell) managed to assemble a once-in-a-lifetime team and whip them into a victorious frenzy over their Soviet champion opponents. With sharp support from Patricia Clarkson (as Brooks's wife) and Noah Emmerich (as his long-suffering assistant), Russell grounds the film with a well-balanced combination of aloofness, intimidation, and closely guarded strategy. No doubt the real Brooks (who died in a car accident shortly after filming completed) would have approved. Thanks to director Gavin O'Connor (Tumbleweeds) and the producers of the similarly laudable sports films Remember the Titans and The Rookie, Miracle brings plenty of heart--and historical accuracy--to an old, familiar formula. --Jeff Shannon
Description
From the studio that brought you THE ROOKIE and REMEMBER THE TITANS comes the movie everybody loves -- MIRACLE. Filled with exhilarating nonstop hockey action and heart-racing suspense, it's the inspiring true story behind one of the greatest moments in sports history the 1980 United States ice hockey team's triumphant Olympic victory against the Soviet Union. Kurt Russell gives a brilliant performance as the dynamic and determined coach Herb Brooks, who had an impossible dream -- beat the seemingly unbeatable Soviets at their own game. Starting with a handpicked group of 26 undisciplined kids, Brooks coached them to play like they never played before, and turned 20 of them into a team that believed they could achieve the unachievable -- and in the process, united a nation with a new feeling of hope.
Customer Reviews:
Great movie.......2007-09-07
My son has started to play ice hockey. In the past three years he has become obsessed with the sport. I remember wanting to see this movie when it came out because I was in high school when the US team won the gold medal. I never did see it when it was in the theaters. I bought this DVD as a gift for my son. What a great story. Well told and well acted.
Miracle.......2007-08-09
One of the best hockey movies. A must to have, and watch over and over.
Miracle.......2007-07-23
Despite our knowing the outcome, "Miracle" keeps us riveted right up to the final buzzer, revisiting a glorious moment in the storied history of the Olympics without resorting to all the familiar underdog-team clichés. Russell, assured in his role as Brooks, is ably supported by Patricia Clarkson, as his wise, supportive wife, Patty; Noah Emmerich as assistant coach Craig Patrick; and Eddie Cahill as team leader and goalie Jim Craig. Full of humanity and fun period detail (just check out Kurt's haircut and wardrobe!), "Miracle" scores as a first-rate family film.
This movie will get your heart rate going.......2007-07-23
I was 16 when this event happened and for some reason, I don't remember it. I saw the documentary "Do You Believe In Miracles" on HBO about three months ago, was totally in awe at this huge historical event, and to find out it was voted the sports event of the millennium in 2000 over incredible events such as Jack Dempsey, Joe Lewis, Seabuscuit, Secretariat, Walter Hagan, Joe Namath, Tiger Woods, Nadia Comaneci, Mary Lou Retton, MaEnroe, Billie Jean, Arther Ashe...and well.. it goes on and on, although I tend to agree with the other review before mine where sports is more commercially owned these days and more of a let down with it's drug use.
This movie depicts plays and events SOOO accurately you could have matched movie to documentary on tv's side by side and not seen much difference even where the players were on the ice!
The team for the movie was made up of real hockey players from the NHL, Canadian and Russian hockey teams.. only a couple were real actors, but ALL did superb in their portrayal of the player he was acting out.
If you are like me and didn't know of this most incredible event in American Olympic history (HOW did I MISS it??) I would highly recommend getting the documentary and the movie and soak in what it must have felt like.. you will leave this movie thinking "Wow.. maybe I can"...
A must see.
Like being there again..........2007-07-16
I was twelve years old when this event happened, sitting in a bedroom with my brothers and some friends, going absolutely crazy when they won the game. I wasn't aware of the larger implications, of the events in history that had been transpiring nor even the meaning of the Olympic games. I knew the Russians to be the bad guys, that was about it. Obviously I somehow knew there was something larger at stake because even my mother was surprised at how nuts we went when they won.
I hesitated to watch this film for a long time due, sadly, to the Disney attached to the film. I was afraid of it being given a gloss. Happily, this was not the case, as many reviewers here will attest to its accuracy and attention to detail.
The opening segue giving a quick and poignant synopsis of events that had been transpiring throughout that decade, with a few significant moments captured at various points throughout the film, grounds it in the history of which I was, at twelve years old, unaware.
Kurt Russell is incredible as the coach but it is the seasoned hockey players who were chosen to act in the film that really give this film its feel. Relive that moment or experience it for the first time, I highly recommend this film, especially in a day and age where the idea of sports has dissipated into big business. This was perhaps one of the last moments in sports history where there was something pure in the game.

A thinking person's thriller, Spy Game employs dense plotting without sacrificing the kinetic momentum that is director Tony Scott's trademark. The film has the byzantine scope of a novel, focusing on veteran CIA operative Nathan Muir (Robert Redford), whose protégé Tom Bishop (Brad Pitt) is scheduled for execution in a Chinese prison. It's Muir's last day before retiring (cliché alert!), and Bishop is being deliberately sacrificed by oily CIA officials to ensure healthy trade with China. Muir has 24 hours to rescue Bishop and his perfunctory love interest (Catherine McCormack), and Spy Game connects the mentor's end-run strategy to flashbacks of his student's exploits in Berlin, Beirut, and beyond. Ambitious but emotionally bland--and not as exciting as Scott's Enemy of the State--Spy Game offers pass-the-torch humor between leather-faced Redford and pretty boy Pitt, and although their dialogue is occasionally limp, the movie compensates with efficient style and substance. --Jeff Shannon

Excellent movie in companionship and excellence under pressure.......2007-08-31
My Profile: 43 yo (and getting better), no qualifications whatsoever as a movie critic
I never get tired of watching this movie, the tutor apprenticce relantionship is superb and I think the documentation on the inner works of the CIA and their everyday lives of their field operatives is very well researched and credible.
The movie has many plots in which to recreate on, the acting of both Pitt and redford is superb and one can appreciate the strong bonding that they make.. a bond that holds no mater if Pitts character goes roge and is left to his own death by the CIA, but the fundamental role is undeniably in the hands of Redford, who under inmense pressure is able t use the CIA owns inner strings to conduct the game he wants to be played, it is mixture of skill, inside knowledge and at the same time an act of redemtion, for Redford's character is in his last days on the CIA prior to retirement, we see a man that now is tired of playing the office game and seeing how the world he once help construct (thorugh dubious schemes) is now meaningless and devoid.
You could also see a healthy critisism of the CIA unescrupulus tactics in scenarios we are now prone to forget such as the cold war and the lebanon of the civil war of the late 70s... yet to me this is not a movie designed to expose a political angle, I guess today this sort of movie would be censored for it may carry a message that may weaken institutional moral against terrorism, or some croc along those lines.
This is rare glimpse at aworld of spies not taylored to the glamour that hollywood highlits of a marvel james Bond type of hero, we see real people, facing friendship, love, political backstabbing, alienation, etc.
Redford is cool.......2007-08-24
Great movie, story was interesting. Brings the cold war to the screen in an unusual way. Awesome ending, Redford is cool.

Smart Viewing in style.......2007-08-06
The movie has been 'BOURNE' out (pun intended) in previous critque's but, HD gives some great visual-gasm's to the system.
If your designs are to have a story that takes intellect and marries to it great acting and visuals to match....Here's your winner!
Nothing special with Spy Game.......2007-07-30
Unfortunately Redford, although an incredible actor can also hit a wall now and again. I found this film to have a large concentration on conversations that were supposed to be meaningful in regards to the mentoring ability of Redford's character. Instead it ends up being just talk, and at times almost seems to appear as if it has no real purpose. They would have been better off finding some real former spies and making a film based off of those experiences instead of the dull, boring effect that this thing emits. Really just could not find anything good in it, and although it has a great cast, the roles they fill are just that...filled, but not enough to make this film have any rewatchable value.

Description
BloodRayne is the action-packed film in the vein of Elektra and stars an incredible all star cast including Kristanna Loken, Ben Kingsley, Michelle Rodriquez, Billy Zane, Michael Madsen, and Meat Loaf. This comic book super-hero battles to save humanity from the dawn of an advancing vampire army. Features terrific action scenes and special effects.
Customer Reviews:
Absolutely terrible.......2007-08-21
Wow, is this movie a piece of crap. The plot has something to do with vampires, vampire hunters and a half human/half vampire. None of it really matters because the movie is so bad. It's supposed to be the 16th century but I always felt I was watching people in costumes on a set. There is nothing believable in this movie. The effects are badly done, the acting is terrible but then the words they have to say contribute to it. As for the directing, who is Uwe Boll and why do people give him money to make films? It was no surprise to see Michael "anything for a paycheck" Madsen here but what was oscar winner Ben Kingsley doing in this dog turd?
Pretty much what others said.......2007-07-18
One star for the movie, three stars for the game. Warning to those Blood Rayne fans, no this is not even Rayne, she's not really that cool. Not Kristanna's fault.
The game is a bit hard to handle for PC game, I had to reconfigure my key bindings to fit my style. Perhaps it's my frist time on action game after since I stopped playing super nintendo, I got a little rusted and took me no less than 10 tries just to beat the first boss. Rayne in the game, is just cool like freezing tundra of Northrend and hot like infernal nine hell of baator.
Since my video card is pretty outdated I couldn't give any scores on graphics but the game content itself worths 3 stars comparing to others of same genre.
Yes, I bought it just for the game.
Somebody kill me!.......2007-07-17
I rented this movie entirely for the box cover. Kristanna Loken is an eyeful of eye candy but no amount of physical beauty can save this disaster. My chihuahua/jack russel speaks better dialogue. Want to watch a hottie heroine? Go with ULTRAVIOLET, FIFTH ELEMENT, RESIDENT EVIL, ELEKTRA. Do NOT buy this movie...do not even RENT it!
Just Didn't Work, What's Going on UWE BOLL !!.......2007-07-15
Being an aspiring film maker myself, I don't know why Uwe Boll cannot make a decent movie. Every movie he has made has just been HORRIBLE FLOPS !! "House of the Dead" could have been good, but NO. "Alone in the Dark" just sucked. This movie was not good, it was suppose to be Kristanna Loken's breakout film from the T3 shadow if I remember right, but NO. Now it up to the "Painkiller Jane" TV series, and I don't think thats woking for her. Rayne could have been good, with more blood sucking action, more fight sequences, more effects, more nudity ( since Loken likes that !), and sex & violence. If all that was put in the movie it probably should have lasted a little longer, for gamer fans. I will say that the best part of the film for me was the sex scene, with Loken, when she broke out of her prison and "raped" her love interest, as a man that's what you dream of. This film just didn't work in anyway, I like some dumb movies, and this wasn't even that. Maybe if it didn't try to be serious, it would have been OK. BE LOOKING OUT FOR SEQUELS TO BLOODRAYNE AND ALONE IN THE DARK. OH, UWE !!!
Keep Moving ... Still Nothing to See Here ...........2007-07-14
Here's a riddle for all of you. What's do you call ten gallons of ice cream and a spoonful of manure? Ten gallons of manure.
I don't care how much they dress up the DVD version of this movie, it won't change the fact that it's terrible. I'm only giving this one-star, but keep about five or six Advil handy. That ought to be enough to cover you for this.
A couple of tid-bits about this disaster:
1. It's made by Uwe Boll, helmer of two of the WORST movies I've ever seen in 'House of the Dead' and 'Alone in the Dark.'
2. In what (to me) was a staggering moment of brutal honesty, Boll himself admitted that he didn't cast the movie until TWO WEEKS before filming began. What he wound up with are a bunch of "names" that happened to have a hole in their schedule and showed up for a quick paycheck and a free trip to Romania. It shows too, the whole film feels like they just totally skipped rehersal and nobody looks even half-interested in making an honest effort.
3. Will Sanderson and Michael Madsen may have discovered the only way to survive a Boll film. They were reportly completely drunk through the whole production.
4. Ben Kingsley, who previously had to deal with Madsen on the film 'Species' refused to even be on the same set with him.
5. In the harem scene with Meatloaf, those are HONEST TO GOD, 100% FULL-BLOODED ROMANIAN PROSTITUTES. I swear you can't make this stuff up. Apparently, Boll couldn't afford real actresses (their union rates made them too expensive), so he decided he could cut costs by just ordering-out for the real thing.
This is a disaster from front to back. I'll give it this though, it's better then his last two films. 'Bloodrayne', at least, is a little bit unintentionally funny. Even having said that though, I could never recommend anyone ever see this. It'll only encourage the man to keep going.
Uwe Boll, without a doubt in my mind, is the most talentless film-maker I've ever seen. I'm absolutely astonished that this guy keeps finding his way behind a camera ...

Product Description
From the studio that brought you THE ROOKIE and REMEMBER THE TITANS comes the movie everybody loves -- MIRACLE. Filled with exhilarating nonstop hockey action and heart-racing suspense, it's the inspiring true story behind one of the greatest moments in s
Amazon.com

The Legendary Battle Continues In Smaller Form...........2006-02-07
For those of you who've not seen Underworld, not just on PSP but on dvd also, you're missing out on a terribly good movie. Not only does this movie have style , but it also has some of the best action sequences in a vampire movie, as well as one of the best storylines, which is sometimes hard to find in a vampire movie. This movie looks just as sleek and sexy in mini form, as does Kate Beckinsale. So please, do yourself a favor and get this movie for your PSP. This may well be your favorite UMD, I know it's mine. Hope this helps. Enjoy!

The enemy is mysterious and incredibly powerful with only one mission: survival of their species no matter what the human cost. Director Paul Verhoeven (Showgirls, Total Recall) reunited many from his 1987 Robocop team for this $100- million science fiction adventure, adapted from Robert A. Heinleins 1959 novel, originally serialized in The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction (October-November, 1959). After graduation, Johnny Rico (Casper Van Dien) volunteers for the Mobile Infantry to do his Federal service -- but also to win over his girlfriend, Carmen Ibanez (Denise Richards), who has signed with the Fleet Academy to become a starship pilot. Johnny joins other boot-camp recruits -- Dizzy Flores (Dina Meyer), who has had a crush on Johnny since school, and Ace Levy (Jake Busey). Ace and Johnny become pals, and Johnnys abilities earn him the squad leader position. A training accident occurs on Johnnys watch, and he is about to resign when Earth is attacked by alien insects intent on eradicating all human life. Johnnys home, Buenos Aires, is no longer on the map. Horrified, he chooses to stay on and fight to destroy the insect threat. Heinlein Is Hard to FIlm (UMD Mini for PSP).......2006-09-11
This movie takes one of Robert A. Heinlein's books and attempts to translate it into film. This film follows the general precept of the book that mankind is in a war with a race of insect-like creatures that have various castes. As with the book the movie does not attempt to resolve the war, but does intend on providing some hope.
Heinlein has been called the Dean of Science Fiction. Because of his phenomenal success he was able to write beyond the boundaries of many of his contemporaries to express his viewpoints regarding society. The novel on which this movie was based was laced with several political viewpoints as well as predicting a future for the military that we can be seen as the trend of our military today.
When Heinlein wrote this novel in 1959 he tried to convey the simple concept that citizenship in the most free society on earth was taken for granted. Heinlein thought that perhaps one way of changing the definition of citizenship was to require that it be earned. Thus Heinlein advocated that all citizens should give two years of public service. Some people have narrowly construed this service to mean military service, but in his book Heinlein clearly stated that the service was governmental service and did not specify the type of service. In any case, earning the right to vote was central to the book. That concept was minimally discussed in the movie in favor or making an action-packed military monster movie.
Heinlein's future military was focused on the individual, with incredible weapons and training. Interestingly, our military continues to rely on ever-better weaponry with the individual soldier wielding ever more power and hopefully having better training as time passes. Again, the movie threw out this concept in order to make the movie move faster with multiple rescue scenarios. While Heinlein's bugs were not sympathetic, by having the bugs callously destroy a chunk of Earth real estate enables the audience to loathe them even more.
After throwing out two of Heinlein's key concepts, the result is a B science fiction movie with lots of gore and action. However, even with traditional science fiction themes, I liked this movie. The acting is only fair, much of the movie is "golly gee whiz" and salute the flag, and the plot has more holes than cheesecloth, and for all that it is a fun and exciting movie that I have watched at least four or five times. Some of the scenes are dramatic and scary, such as when the flying bugs attack and when the ground bugs spear people. The scenes with the tanker bugs are incredible. I have spent too much time trying to figure out how their burning dissolving fluid works.
There are places in the movie that are likely implausible, and yet, maybe not. When Carmen Ibanez (Denise Richards) pilots a huge spaceship out of dock she does it by eye and barely keeps from damaging the ship and the dock. Clearly not standard operating procedure and had the ship been damaged she would have been fried (or should have) by her boss. However, she is cocky and overconfident and takes responsibility and authority, all traits that we try to cultivate in our military within the framework of standard military discipline. So perhaps parts are a bit far-fetched, but maybe not too far-fetched.
One aspect that I think Heinlein would have approved is the brutality of military training. People broke bones and suffered pain, just as they would in actual combat, though situations that cause death are clearly unacceptable. While the scenes of injury in training are initially shocking, medical technology in this future has the capability of repairing such injuries and being capable of handling the shock of seeing those injuries or withstanding them could give a soldier a combat advantage in the field; gruesome, but effective scenes.
The film was intended to be shocking, and it succeeds. This movie is not for children. I would not let anyone under the age of 14 watch this movie, even though there are a few video games with similar levels of violence. I think the movie is too violent for even young teenagers, and it deserves its "R" rating. There are a few scenes involving nudity and one involving sex that again may be shocking, but given the equality of men and women in this army of the future, the scenes make sense.
I have read the book and I still like the movie. This movie is not going to win any awards, but who cares? I think this is a great bowl of popcorn movie action film where you can relieve some stress as thousands of bugs are gruesomely terminated. There are times when you really want to root for the human race, and this one allows you to do so without guilt.
Starship Troopers... great UMD fun.......2006-02-26
Hi... I'm new reviewing articles here in Amazon, so i hope to give good advice to anyone interested.
The movie is some kind of Platoon meets Starwars plus Sweet Valley high story. Althought at first, after the short introduction of Klendathu the movie slows down quite a bit during the high school part, but fortunately a few minutes later it gets speed again and don't lose it until basically the end of the show.
About the disc, the picture quality is great, and the sound is quite enjoyable, strongly recommended to have a good set of earphones to appreciate the real deal of the music and sound effects.
In a few words.... Great portable movie to go everywhere.

Not another bug movie!.......2005-08-30
In defense of our world, school kids from Argentina join the military upon graduation. Military service is required for full citizenship. During their term they learn their new environment and grow together or apart as they battle big bugs from outer space.
Yep it is another bug movie. And the bugs are big. Too bad for the people that read the book. There is no way to justify this movie to you.
However this is a great parity on military types with the grunts being boxy shaped faces and bodies to match, the elite having pointy accouterments. And the gung-ho getting their brains sucked out. This looks like a pilot for a TV series. Male associate soldiers from the book were replaced with female soldiers who improved the shower scenes.
If you just have to take the 'Fascist Utopia' thing seriously then watch a serious movie where there is still a Paul sucked into the same situation by his teacher and others in "All Quiet on the Western Front" (1930).
