The latest entry in the Harry Potter saga could be retitled Fast Times at Hogwarts, where finding a date to the winter ball is nearly as terrifying as worrying about Lord Voldemort's return. Thus, the young wizards' entry into puberty (and discovery of the opposite sex) opens up a rich mining field to balance out the dark content in the fourth movie (and the stories are only going to get darker). Mike Newell (Four Weddings and a Funeral) handily takes the directing reins and eases his young cast through awkward growth spurts into true young actors. Harry (Daniel Radcliffe, more sure of himself) has his first girl crush on fellow student Cho Chang (Katie Leung), and has his first big fight with best bud Ron (Rupert Grint). Meanwhile, Ron's underlying romantic tension with Hermione (Emma Watson) comes to a head over the winter ball, and when she makes one of those girl-into-woman Cinderella entrances, the boys' reactions indicate they've all crossed a threshold.

But don't worry, there's plenty of wizardry and action in Goblet of Fire. When the deadly Triwizard Tournament is hosted by Hogwarts, Harry finds his name mysteriously submitted (and chosen) to compete against wizards from two neighboring academies, as well as another Hogwarts student. The competition scenes are magnificently shot, with much-improved CGI effects (particularly the underwater challenge). And the climactic confrontation with Lord Voldemort (Ralph Fiennes, in a brilliant bit of casting) is the most thrilling yet. Goblet, the first installment to get a PG-13 rating, contains some violence as well as disturbing images for kids and some barely shrouded references at sexual awakening (Harry's bath scene in particular). The 2 1/2-hour film, lean considering it came from a 734-page book, trims out subplots about house-elves (they're not missed) and gives little screen time to the standard crew of the other Potter films, but adds in more of Britain's finest actors to the cast, such as Brendan Gleeson as Mad-Eye Moody and Miranda Richardson as Rita Skeeter. Michael Gambon, in his second round as Professor Dumbledore, still hasn't brought audiences around to his interpretation of the role he took over after Richard Harris died, but it's a small smudge in an otherwise spotless adaptation. --Ellen A. Kim

4 out of 5 stars Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (Two-Disc Special Edition).......2007-09-13

When this movie was first released on DVD, I ended up with the single-disk edition. The two disk edition has great special features including "makings of" and behind the scenes, as well as deleted scenes. The "games" are difficult and challenging for any age level. This two-disk edition is well worth a couple of dollars extra over the single-disk edition!

3 out of 5 stars Wide screen version is very DARK on non-HD TV.......2007-09-11

This movie is great, however, the picture is extremely dark on the widescreen version. It might be better viewed on a High-def television. Otherwise, I would choose the version that is formatted for regular tv.

5 out of 5 stars Great book, great movie.......2007-09-10

I love the movie, just like I loved the book. The only small problem I have is with the actor who plays Dumbledore. He just doesn't fit the mental image I have for him. Other then that, I highly recommend it for people that have never seen the movie.

5 out of 5 stars Harry Potter & Goblet of Fire (4).......2007-09-08

This one as all other's keeps you watching and waiting for what is next to come. If you haven't seen this one please see it. You are missing a wonderful set of movies and books if you don't enjoy these. Mine will be handed down to my grand children to enjoy over the years. I'm waiting for the other books to come out in movies and I'll buy those too. Then I'll have the complete set of books and movies to read and watch over and over.

1 out of 5 stars The Book Is Better.......2007-09-07

if you read the book, you will hate this movie. the books has several, strong story lines. the movie had to be condensed so much so, that it was completely obvious what was cut out, and what wasn't.

go to the wikipedia website, and you can see a comparision of both the book and the movie.

the movie as a piece of art sucked as well. in the first half an hour, i honestly couldn't keep my eyes straight. everything was so fast, that you didn't see the characters faces for more than a second. it was also very choppy. take a look at the scene where ron and hermione are mad at each other during the yule ball. right after that they are walking out of the ball room, without harry. that 2 minutes of film is so incredibly choppy, you know somehting was cut out.

the deleted scenes don't help either. even if you burned the movie together, you'll still be lost.

for those who didn't read the book, you may like this as a movie. but honestly, there wasn't enough to hold your interest, except the scenes with mad eye moody. i though dumbldore couldn't get any worse than movie 3 - i was wrong. this guy is awful. he obviously didn't read the book either.

i have this dvd because i am a harry potter nut, and needed it in my collection. i didn't buy it though, until movie 5 came out in theatres just so i could compare them.

On the DVD
The highlight of the two-disc set is a half-hour conversation with actors Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint. They discuss their reactions to the film and other topics with British writer Richard Curtis . Then they answer questions from contest-winning fans, such as what are their favorite kids' books (Watson bypasses the obvious answer in favor of Roald Dahl and Philip Pullman) and what scenes are they looking forward to in upcoming films. More routine extras include the "Reflections on the Fourth Film" featurette (14 min.), though it has comments from some of the other young cast members, and "Preparing for the Yule Ball" (9 min.). The 10 minutes of additional scenes are mostly skulking and skullduggery, plus a long musical number from the ball. The remaining material is grouped along the lines of the Triwizard Tournament, with behind-the-scenes looks at each of the competitions (about 22 min. total), two longer featurettes on He Who Must Not Be Named (11 min.) and the workday of the other contestants (Robert Pattinson, Stanislav Ianevski, and Clémence Poésy, 13 min.), and four games, playable with the directional arrows on the remote control, that can be frustrating to figure out. --David Horiuchi

The greatest trilogy in film history, presented in the most ambitious sets in DVD history, comes to a grand conclusion with the extended edition of The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King. Not only is the third and final installment of Peter Jackson's adaptation of the works of J.R.R. Tolkien the longest of the three, but a full 50 minutes of new material pushes the running time to a whopping 4 hours and 10 minutes. The new scenes are welcome, and the bonus features maintain the high bar set by the first two films, The Fellowship of the Ring and The Two Towers.

What's New?
One of the scenes cut from the theatrical release but included here, the resolution of the Saruman storyline, generated a lot of publicity when the movie opened, as actor Christopher Lee complained in the press about losing his only appearance. It's an excellent scene, one Jackson calls "pure Tolkien," and provides better context for Pippin to find the wizard's palantir in the water, but it's not critical to the film. In fact, "valuable but not critical" might sum up the ROTK extended edition. It's evident that Jackson made the right cuts for the theatrical run, but the extra material provides depth and ties up a number of loose ends, and for those sorry to see the trilogy end (and who isn't?) it's a welcome chance to spend another hour in Middle-earth. Some choice moments are Gandalf's (Ian McKellen) confrontation with the Witch King (we find out what happened to the wizard's staff), the chilling Mouth of Sauron at the gates of Mordor, and Frodo (Elijah Wood) and Sam (Sean Astin) being mistaken for Orc soldiers. We get to see more of Éowyn (Miranda Otto), both with Aragorn and on the battlefield, even fighting the hideously deformed Orc lieutenant, Gothmog. We also see her in one of the most anticipated new scenes, the Houses of Healing after the battle of the Pelennor Fields. It doesn't present Aragorn (Viggo Mortensen) as a savior as the book did, but it shows the initial meeting between Éowyn and Faramir (David Wenham), a relationship that received only a meaningful glance in the theatrical cut.

If you want to completely immerse yourself in Peter Jackson's marvelous and massive achievement, only the extended edition will do.

And for those who complained, no, there are no new endings, not even the scouring of the Shire, which many fans were hoping to see. Nor is there a scene of Denethor (John Noble) with the palantir, which would have better explained both his foresight and his madness. As Jackson notes, when cuts are made, the secondary characters are the first to go, so there is a new scene of Aragorn finding the palantir in Denethor's robes. Another big difference is Aragorn's confrontation with the King of the Dead. In the theatrical version, we didn't know whether the King had accepted Aragorn's offer when the pirate ships pulled into the harbor; here Jackson assumes that viewers have already experienced that tension, and instead has the army of the dead join the battle in an earlier scene (an extended cameo for Jackson). One can debate which is more effective, but that's why the film is available in both versions. If you feel like watching the relatively shorter version you saw in the theaters, you can. If you want to completely immerse yourself in Peter Jackson's marvelous and massive achievement, only the extended edition will do.

How Are the Bonus Features?
To complete the experience, The Return of the King provides the same sprawling set of features as the previous extended editions: four commentary tracks, sharp picture and thrilling sound, and two discs of excellent documentary material far superior to the recycled material in the theatrical edition. Those who have listened to the seven hours of commentary for the first two extended editions may wonder if they need to hear more, but there was no commentary for the earlier ROTK DVD, so it's still entertaining to hear Jackson break down the film (he says the beacon scene is one of his favorites), discuss differences from the book, point out cameos, and poke fun at himself and the extended-edition concept ("So this is the complete full strangulation, never seen before, here exclusively on DVD!"). The documentaries (some lasting 30 minutes or longer) are of their usual outstanding quality, and there's a riveting storyboard/animatic sequence of the climactic scene, which includes a one-on-one battle between Aragorn and Sauron.

One DVD Set to Rule Them All
Peter Jackson's trilogy has set the standard for fantasy films by adapting the Holy Grail of fantasy stories with a combination of fidelity to the original source and his own vision, supplemented by outstanding writing, near-perfect casting, glorious special effects, and evocative New Zealand locales. The extended editions without exception have set the standard for the DVD medium by providing a richer film experience that pulls the three films together and further embraces Tolkien's world, a reference-quality home theater experience, and generous, intelligent, and engrossing bonus features. --David Horiuchi

5 out of 5 stars Wish I could give it 10 stars.......2007-08-22

This is my favorite film. Probably ever. It is an absolute MUST for any movie lover in general. Along with the other 2 films of course. The platinum edition is pretty damn sweet. I loved the intertwined extended/deleted scenes. I wish other directors did that more often. Yes the movie is 4 hours but for people who love movies and love great movies, it shouldnt matter how long a film is. If it was 6 hours, I would still watch it without complain. I cannot gush enough about this movie. Peter Jackson created a masterpiece that noone could possibly match. At least not anytime soon.
His attention to every detail is evident in this movie. The acting is wonderful, I even stopped cringing at Elijah Wood's acting after this film. And I absolutely adore the score to this. I own the soundtrack to all 3 films. I love them all. I dont own many other soundtracks but this is a must for anyone. I could go on and on.

4 out of 5 stars "No! We need him alive. We need him to talk".......2007-08-09

Why has it taken me three and a half years to review this movie on Amazon? Because it's taken me that long to decide whether I like it or not.

My initial reaction to "The Return of the King" was one of disappointment. Not only was there no way it could have lived up completely to the hype in advance of the release of the third film in the most acclaimed film trilogy ever, but many of the specific decisions Peter Jackson made with respect to this film, both in the scripting process and in the editing room, seemed calculated to infuriate die-hard fans of the book, the films' core constituency. Certainly the most controversial example was the omission of Christopher Lee's Saruman from the Theatrical Edition.

In this Extended Edition the Saruman scene is, of course, restored to its place in the film, but turns out not to be as satisfying as one might have hoped. The manner of Saruman's death is certainly not faithful to the book, and the scene is indeed, as the filmmakers have said to explain their controversial decision to cut it, a structural encumbrance on the front of the movie. One is left to wonder whether "The Return of the King" may have been better off without the scene after all.

This is a recurring pattern with the additional scenes in the Extended Edition. Each of the new scenes most anticipated by fans of the book proves to be so far inferior to its book equivalent that the film was probably better off without it in the first place. The Extended Edition gives us a Gandalf/Witch King confrontation which is harmful rather than helpful to Gandalf's character and a Mouth of Sauron scene which is profoundly untrue to Tolkien's philosophy of warfare. Of the three Extended Editions, "The Return of the King" has been the most poorly received by Tolkien fandom, probably deservedly so.

But away from the hype of its release, the film as a whole can be seen to be an awesome piece of work. Not quite as perfect a literary adaptation as "The Fellowship of the Ring" or as cinematically compelling as "The Two Towers", "Return" nonetheless provides a powerfully emotional climax to a film trilogy fully worthy of Tolkien's beloved epic. The climactic scenes of the story may not live up to one's imagination of them in reading the book -- how could they? -- but they are more memorable than anything in the vast majority of the movies I have seen.

"The Return of the King" will always be my third favorite of Jackson's "Rings" trilogy, but that still makes it one of the greatest fantasy films of all time.

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorites.......2007-07-30

Amazingly creative, scary, and inspirational. Wonderful story full of drama, moral examples, and deep meaning. It's hard to add to 622 reviews. It's not for the faint of heart.

5 out of 5 stars Return of the King DVD.......2007-07-30

Great movie. THe series is just awesome and this last movie is wonderful and suspenseful.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Movie.......2007-07-26

This is an excellent movie. That is why I bought it. The theatrical version of this movie made you say, "Wow, what a great movie." The extended version raised the bar to, "Oh WOW!! What a totally awesome, AMAZING movie!" That is all.

The otherworldly landscape of Iceland lends an appropriate touch of dark fantasy to this modern retelling of Beowulf, the oldest epic poem in the English language. Gerard Butler (The Phantom of the Opera) brings the right balance of physicality and world-weariness as the Swedish hero Beowulf, who travels to Denmark to fight the monstrous troll Grendel (Icelandic superstar Ignvar Sigurdsson), which has been plaguing the house of King Hrothgar (Stellan Skarsgård, buried under a mound of prosthetic hair). However, what transpires is not a battle between good and evil, but a convoluted mystery of sorts, with Beowulf playing the detective who discovers that his foe is more human than monster, and Hrothgar less wronged innocent than catalyst for his own downfall. Director Sturla Gunnarsson succeeds in pulling this legendary story from the dust of academics by contemporizing the dialogue (Andrew Rai Berzins has an excellent ear for hard-bitten palaver), and his visuals are nothing less than striking, but the film attempts to be both monster movie and melancholy drama, while never quite satisfying the requirements of either genre. Regardless, the quality cast (which includes Sarah Polley from Dawn of the Dead as a sharp-tongued witch with a connection to Grendel) and some well-handled action sequences should hold viewers' attention even when the unnecessarily complex plot does not. --Paul Gaita

2 out of 5 stars Not enough action and too much bad dialog.......2007-09-06

Grendel and Beowulf is yet another retelling of the epic 6th century poem Beowulf, but is not a good one. The film looks great, filmed in Iceland you can really believe you're in Denmark or Sweden fifteen centuries ago. The clothing, armor and swords are well done as well. But for telling an exciting story, this movie is pretty dull. There's a lot of talking and standing around, but not much action. Other problems include sporadic dialog that is too modern and out of place, and the actors accents. The hero, Beowulf, who is from Sweden, is played nicely by Gerard Butler but he makes no attempt to hide his Scottish accent. Sarah Polley plays a Danish witch with a flat American accent. Everytime they spoke I found it jarring as it just didn't fit. The character of the witch and a few other elements are add-ons to the original material and aren't needed and don't really work. This is a nice looking film, but not a good one.

5 out of 5 stars awsome movie.......2007-08-29

This blew up 300 by a long shot. I didnt like all the slow motion in 300, it made it corny.

5 out of 5 stars Beowulf and Grendel.......2007-08-26

The cinematography of this movie, shot in Iceland, is breathtaking. The movie seems to capture the dreariness of the "indoor life" as I imagine it was while carrying us along an amazing viking adventure at the same time. This is a movie I have watched several times, purchased for my library and endlessly recommend to friends.

4 out of 5 stars Bold and challenging to moviegoers!.......2007-08-24

This movie will not leave you comfortably in your seat; we watched this as a large group, and had varied reactions. Some hated the movie because it lacked the finesse of major Hollywood blockbusters, while others cried foul! that such a job would have ruined the telling of this tale.

The scenery is simply stunning and deserves five stars for itself. Hats off to whomever picked Iceland, it gave the movie an entire other-worldly feel from the first frame.

If you are looking for quick and slick brainless and mindless drivel, don't bother to watch. However, if you want to watch Beowulf come to life in a modern, stark telling that will be bold and challenging to moviegoers, then take a good look at this movie.

Best parts: the scenery, the casting.
Worst parts: some language seemed too contrived (very little).

And there was a good surprise at the end, if you're not familiar with the various Beowulf legends.

1 out of 5 stars TERRIBLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2007-08-23

I have seen some bad movies in my life, but I can honestly say THIS IS THE WORST ONE I HAVE EVER SEEN! The movie was so bad; I'm not even going to go into detail about what was so bad about it. It boggles my mind about how people gave this a great review. If you don't believe me, go ahead and rent it...I dare you! I had to give it one star because Amazon rating doesn't go into negative numbers.

5 out of 5 stars Teen Fantasy Come True.......2007-09-09

If wishes were fishes, we'd all have a fry. As a teen in high school, Louise (Robin Lively) has a chance to fulfill all her wishes. It's just that most wishes are for personal gratification and rarely are concerned about the dreams or hopes of classmates, friend or foe. We all have had such desires and seeing Louise deal with such power only brought back my days of high school envy. So enjoy some nostalgia for a little bit and put yourself into her shoes.

C.S. Lewis's classic novel The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe makes an ambitious and long-awaited leap to the screen in this modern adaptation. It's a CGI-created world laden with all the special effects and visual wizardry modern filmmaking technology can conjure, which is fine so long as the film stays true to the story that Lewis wrote. And while this film is not a literal translation--it really wants to be so much more than just a kids' movie--for the most part it is faithful enough to the story, and whatever faults it has are happily faults of overreaching, and not of holding back. The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe tells the story of the four Pevensie children, Lucy, Peter, Edmund, and Susan, and their adventures in the mystical world of Narnia. Sent to the British countryside for their own safety during the blitz of World War II, they discover an entryway into a mystical world through an old wardrobe. Narnia is inhabited by mythical, anthropomorphic creatures suffering under the hundred-year rule of the cruel White Witch (Tilda Swinton, in a standout role). The arrival of the children gives the creatures of Narnia hope for liberation, and all are dragged into the inevitable conflict between evil (the Witch) and good (Aslan the Lion, the Messiah figure, regally voiced by Liam Neeson).

Director (and co-screenwriter) Andrew Adamson, a veteran of the Shrek franchise, knows his way around a fantasy-based adventure story, and he wisely keeps the story moving when it could easily become bogged down and tiresome. Narnia is, of course, a Christian allegory and the symbology is definitely there (as it should be, otherwise it wouldn't be the story Lewis wrote), but audiences aren't knocked over the head with it, and in the hands of another director it could easily have become pedantic. The focus is squarely on the children and their adventures. The four young actors are respectable in their roles, especially considering the size of the project put on their shoulders, but it's the young Georgie Henley as the curious Lucy who stands out. This isn't a film that wildly succeeds, and in the long run it won't have the same impact as the Harry Potter franchise, but it is well done, and kids will get swept up in the adventure. Note: Narnia does contain battle scenes that some parents may consider too violent for younger children. --Dan Vancini

5 out of 5 stars THE BEST OF FANTASY AND MAGIC!!!.......2007-09-07

how could anyone give this film a low rate. what?? i don't get it. excellent picture i absolutely loved it. it had a huge dose of magic, tons of fantasy, and a tad bit of reality. this is for both children and adults, and very enjoyable by both. the story is great, the whole setup, the animals, everything was beautiful. their imagination really went out of the roof with this one. it had four young children, a magic wardrobe, talking lion, icy witch, the cutest beavers, and just about any other imaginable animal you can think of. it's good against evil, and the prophecy will be fulfilled. if you have not seen it, it is a must see. this story just makes you want more of it. i expected good, but not great. and this sure greatly exceeded my expectations. it's okay to escape reality every now and then. first there was neverland and now there's narnia. it's movies like this that make you wish these place really exsisted. just a short 135 minute escape from the real world.

5 out of 5 stars Well done........2007-09-04

I was hesitant to put too much confidence in this movie, as I have been disappointed by book-to-movie translations in the past. However, this movie was very well done, keeping the points in the movie that the book emphasized. and doing a good job with it. There are no digital effects that look hokey; they are all well done.

I highly suggest all families see this movie. The message of one person laying thier life on the line to save others is strong, especially for kids (and adults) that live in our self-centered world.

Get this movie, and watch it over and over.

5 out of 5 stars A Picturesque Fairy Tale.......2007-08-28

This has all the elements of a classic fairy tale: the entry into another world through the wall of a closet, a witch who was power to freeze everyone, monsters, animal-like warriors, and the like.

Little Lucy finds a magic entrance through the back of a wardrobe. Not surprisingly, her older siblings scoff at her and say that she is living in a little-child's fantasy world. But they soon find out otherwise.

The initially frozen world of Narnia is graphically shown. Imagine living in a world that used to have seasons but is now a world in which winter never ends!

There is irony in this tale. Lucy and her siblings, who had been sent to live with a relative in the countryside in order to avoid the war (the German bombing of British cities) instead find themselves right in the middle of the war going on in Narnia.

The author, Clives Staples Lewis, intended a spiritual application for his tale. The parallel between the deaths of Astlan the Lion for rescuing the people from the power of the witch, and of Jesus Christ for the rescue of the world from Satan, is obvious.

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent Version of TLTWATW.......2007-07-26

This is an excellent version of "The Lion, the Witch & the Wardrobe". It is in wide screen format and includes additional scenes. The additional scenes in the battle were very well done, although the scene where Peter skewers a harpy in flight with a spear while riding at a full gallop stretches even this fantasy a bit - but it looked great!
The additional features were also very good. I especially liked the biography of CS Lewis. All in all, this was a wonderful package.

5 out of 5 stars Cool Movie.......2007-07-17

Based on Jill Murphy's book, this charming movie is set in an English boarding school for witches--complete with orange and black school uniforms, broom-flying exercises, and potion assignments for lab. The incompetent student of the title, Mildred, is played by a fetching young Fairuza Balk. Diana Rigg is the nasty head teacher, Tim Curry the (oddly) idolized Grand Wizard, and TV's Facts of Life maven Charlotte Rae does double duty as the school's kindly dean and her evil witch twin, who's bent on taking over the school. Directed by Robert Young, this 68-minute video features less than state-of-the-art effects and several songs that stop the action--most bizarrely an outdoor assembly performance by Curry that turns into a weird music video. Still, preteen girls will identify with the beleaguered heroine who overcomes her wickedly snooty rival, a teacher who doesn't believe in her, and a band of dastardly witches and, of course, saves the day. (Ages 6 and older) --Kimberly Heinrichs

Maturation is a process fraught with insecurity and angst, and Sabrina (Melissa Joan Hart) is experiencing all the normal teenage emotions while simultaneously trying to hide her powers as a witch, and fit in at a normal high school. Imagine her surprise when, on her 17th birthday, Sabrina discovers that on top of her already packed schedule she must somehow find time to study for a test to earn her witch's license. What's worse, her Quizmaster (Alimi Ballard) from the other realm can be counted upon to throw a pop quiz whenever Sabrina least expects it. From mandatory enrollment in witch boot camp to working on the school parade float with her snooty nemesis Libby (Jenna Leigh Green) and joining her class on a field trip to Disneyworld, Sabrina's 17th year yields lots of important lessons about taking responsibility for her actions, nurturing a compassion for others, overcoming jealousy, and identifying the truly important things in her life. Luckily Sabrina's Aunts Hilda (Caroline Rhea) and Zelda (Beth Broderick), talking cat Salem (Nick Bakay), boyfriend Harvey (Nate Richert), and new friend Valerie (Lindsay Sloane) can be counted upon to lend their support and help Sabrina through even the most stressful days. A huge cast of guest stars throughout the 26-episode season include John Ratzenberger as Santa and Johnny Mathis as himself in "Sabrina Claus," Patrick Thomas O'Brien as Cupid in "The Equalizer," and a performance by 10,000 Maniacs in "A River of Candy Corn Runs Through It." 4 out of 5 stars i love this show!!!.......2007-08-31

I think that no one in this world could love this show as much as me. It was the best teenage sitcom that ever came on TV. I have both the first and the second season and i am eagerly anticipating the third season, does anyone know when it is coming out? I was very disappointed however that so much was cut out of the second season, I notice a couple places were the songs were changed and little scenes were cut out here and there, why do they do this? I see no point in taking out things when your are paying so much to have the whole season! The song change, though disappointing, does not upset me as much as missing part of the episodes, I really hope that the third season is better and they leave everything in it. And as a bonus some extra features would be nice! I only give this 4 stars because of the missing pieces, and I hope i can give season 3 5 stars!! I can't wait for the rest of the seasons!! I hope they come quickly!! I love this show!!

5 out of 5 stars A Wholesome Family TV Show.......2007-08-23

Sabrina the Teenage Witch TV series is a time-less classic. It has all the ingredients of a classic family show. It is very entertaining. Non-offensive. It is a good-feel show. And it is a show with simple stories.

Watching the Sabrina dvds now is just as entertaining now as well as when it first aired. I can't wait for future dvd releases of the TV series other seasons.

It is unfortunate that the star, Melissa Joan Hart, grew up and could no longer continue this teenage series.

4 out of 5 stars shame about the editing.......2007-08-20

I eagerly waited for this to come out on DVD and though the show is still great it's a shame that they have included cut version episodes for the DVD. A couple of the episodes don't make as much sense because there seem to be bits cut from them. They have also changed the music on one of the episodes. It's not a huge deal but it does take something away from the overall quality of the collection. The episodes improve more and more towards the end of the DVD where the show seems to get into its stride a bit more. I love the Disneyworld episode. I love Salem...I actually find myself believing he's a real cat! Overall, great. Only gets 4 stars because episodes have been cut and because there are no extras. A behind the scenes look would be nice

4 out of 5 stars great show, a few drawbacks on dvd.......2007-08-11

The show is geared towards kids and young adults but some of the jokes are appealing to everyone. I think the 2nd and 3rd seasons were the show's peak, after that it went downhill. It's a great value if you liked the show - but like other people have mentioned it contains no special features and they removed a lot of the original music. If you haven't seen it in a while, you might not notice but if you're like me and you watch the reruns on ABC Family, you'll quickly pick up on that. I mean honestly, how much money would it have cost them to keep the song "Are you Jimmy Ray?" in the episode "When Teens Collide". I'm sure it wouldn't have amounted to much in royalties, jeez!

If you're trying to decide between the first and second seasons, I'd say go with the 2nd season. The show really got it's "stride" in it's second year, the writing/comedy is much better, as are the special effects, but both are great in their own rights.

And yeah, for such a great and memorable show they should have included bonus features. There's not even a commentary!

3 out of 5 stars Are you kidding me?.......2007-08-09

I was soo happy to get Sabrina the Teenage witch, I was just super exitied! It was my favorite TV show for so many years...but i was so disapointed with the DVDs! They cut stuff out!!! I recorded them on VHS off the TV so i could watch them way back when it first aired, so i have been re-watching them on VHS for years, and I was mad when the TV station cut stuff out, But to put it onto DVD with the stuff cut out, that is WRONG! I am so MAD! I looked forward to haveing the entire episodes...but I have the TV cuts of it. This sucks. They cut out some of my favorite parts
For example, in Witchs Licance part 2, Hild, Zelda, and Salem go to the other realm to get a lab top. Remember that? And Hilda got into an argument with a kid to push a button that said, 'Don't Push'. So it was hard to get the joke that came next at the house.
You may think that it is so little, but since it was my favorite TV show, it hurts. It majorly sucks. I feel like i got a ripped off copy of it out of a guys jacket in an ally. I am actully about in tears over this. This rediculous!

Amazon.com essential video

This splendid adventure-fantasy from 1990 was adapted from Roald Dahl's book and directed by maverick British filmmaker Nicolas Roeg, who turned out to be a perfect (if seemingly unlikely) interpreter of Dahl's fiendishly clever tale of witchcraft in contemporary England. Scary, funny, and wildly entertaining, it's all about a young boy named Luke (Jasen Fisher) whose parents have died in a tragic accident, and whose grandmother (Mai Zetterling) takes him to a posh hotel in England, where a secret coven of witches is holding its annual convention. The Grand High Witch (Anjelica Huston, in a scene-stealing performance) has decreed that all children in England be turned into mice, and Luke and his pal Bruno (Charles Potter) are the first victims on the list. That's when the movie magicians from Jim Henson's creature shop have their work cut out for them, turning Luke and Bruno into clever little rodents and The Witches into a dazzling display of imaginative special effects, using a seamless combination of real mice and superb animatronic puppets. Director Roeg doesn't compromise the sinister edge of Dahl's story, but comedy gets equal time from the brilliant cast including Brenda Blethyn (from Secrets and Lies and Little Voice), Rowan Atkinson (of Black Adder and Mr. Bean fame), and Jane Horrocks (Little Voice) as the Grand High Witch's beleaguered assistant. Although it was largely neglected during its brief theatrical release, this wonderful movie has since enjoyed a thriving appreciation on video--see it and you'll understand why. --Jeff Shannon
