5 out of 5 stars Job Well Done...Van Damme at his finest!.......2007-06-09

This movie was well made and it truly displays Jean-Claude Van Damme at his finest. He has been criticized recently for his focus on action based movies, but then again, it is what he really excels at. Job well done and I recommend this one to any fan or just anyone who is looking for a great and entertaining action movie "Van Damme" style.

5 out of 5 stars WOW DANG ONE OF THE BEST TV DVD-MOVE FOR SHORE EVER DONE.......2007-05-08

NOW I COULD EASYLY SAY THIS WILL GO DOWN AS ONE OF THE GRATEST MOVE EVER MADE IN THE WORLD THAT IS SO FOR SHORE & THAT IS PUTTING IT LIGHTLY

4 out of 5 stars earlier is better.......2006-11-09

this is one of VanDamnes earlier movies---and one of his better ones-----the story line is fair and his acting is good

4 out of 5 stars the movie has heart.......2006-10-03

Lionheart is one of Van-Damme's better movies. It is filled with great fighting, decent characters, and a good story.

Van Damme plays a French Legionnaire named "Leone", who escapes to America, where his brother has been killed. In an attempt to help his sister-in-law and niece, Leone enters the underground of fighting for money to help them out, where he becomes known as "Lionheart". The movie displays, through its story, that a good heart eventually defeats all forms of evil and deception.

The fights are awesome in the movie, as well as the fight locales ranging from a parking garage, a raquetball court, and even a near-empty pool. The final fight is between Lionheart and a massive fighter named "Atilla" (who also played the deadly Mongolian fighter in Van Damme's movie "The Quest"). The fight displays great Van Damme kicks, lots of blood, and lasts about 7 minutes.

If you love underground fighting for a variety of fights, Lionheart will definetly please. You even get a decent story with a happy ending as a bonus.

3 out of 5 stars where's the letterboxed edition.......2006-08-02

5 stars for the movie but only one star for the company releasing it. Much like "timecop" another terrific Van Damme movie, there's no letterboxed edition. Why do they do this to us? The horror...the horror...

2 out of 5 stars Rather shallow.......2007-09-06

I've seen some superb productions in the Empires "series". Holy Warriors, however, is not one of them. To keep this short, I will just say that much of the film consists of slow-motion scenes of Richard, Saladin, or battles, while the voice over narrator gravely and dramatically intones his explanations of what we are seeing. Even the scholary comments by the academics don't seem to be able to contribute much to the story line. This documentary is a disappointing and rather superficial treatment of a great historical story.

3 out of 5 stars Empires - Holy Warriors: Richard the Lionheart & Saladin.......2007-05-13

A sobering documentary in light of the current state of world politics.

3 out of 5 stars Well crafted with small amounts of bias.......2006-11-04

I appreciated the style of the movie and thought it engaging, entertaining, and visually excellent. However, I disagree with the other reviewers that claim the movie is biased in favor of Richard the Lionheart. The cover of the dvd case states that Richard earned the name Lionheart "as much for his murderous brutality as for his chivalry." Saladin is contrasted from the outset for his "mercy towards the crusaders in contrast to the demonized caricature of popular modern-day Western myth." It seems that the intention of the DVD was to show Richard as more cruel than chivalrous and Saladin as more compassionate than cruel. The intent is therefore obvious and is carried throughout the movie that casts most blame for the crusades/bloodshed on westerners and the intolerance of Christianity. Richard, and westerners in general, compared far less favorably to the enlightened, more tolerant Muslims and Saladin. It was the Christian crusaders that intolerantly slaughtered the inhabitants of Jerusalem in the first crusade. It was Richard that slaughtered 6000 prisoners of war at Acre (as if over a delay in the negotiations for the true cross). Saladin is pictured as much more honourable and thoughtful. It was Saladin that showed the "moral superiority" of his religion by not slaughtering the inhabitants of Jerusalem. This was a not so veiled jab at the West's current political situation. It is quite possibe that Saladin only fairs less favorably to his own idealized reputation as a reluctant peaceful warrior. Both men sought power politically and both men coveted Jerusalem for religious and political reasons. It is quite obvious that the film did not set out to portray Richard as a brave chilvalrous man only wishing to please God. I think the DVD comes under fire more for its attempt at showing both men as political, religious products of their time than the men that we wish them to be--morally superior extentions of our own traditions.

5 out of 5 stars i enjoyed this.......2006-07-12

i really loved this documentary, i don't pretend to be a scholar in either islamic or christian propaganda, but just really enjoyed the theatrical presentation of two men that history has lumped together forever. i think a lot of the other "reviewers" missed the point. this isn't about the crusades or religion, its about two men tied together by history and popular myth, for good or bad Richard the lionheart and saladin are like cats and dogs, peanutbutter and jelly, and yes, pickles and motor oil!!! well, maybe not pickles and motor oil.

5 out of 5 stars An Engaging, Well-Done Account of the Shown-Down Between Saladin & Richard I.......2006-05-09

I found this documentary very compelling and well done. I particularly liked the actors who they cast in the roles of Saladin and Richard I (the Lionhearted). They looked perfect for their parts. The visuals were beautiful, there were some unnerving make-up (or dummy) special effects, and the narrator was easy to understand.

I disagree with those who thought that the documentary was biased in favor of Richard I. Most of the historical commentators in the documentary were Arabic and greatly favored Saladin's position, and even one of the English commentators said that Saladin was far more noble than Richard; that they came from "different worlds," that Islam is about tolerance, and that Christianity was very intolerant at that period in history, and that Saladin was too noble to comprehend Richard's brand of dirty fighting. They also glossed over the massacre of the survivors of the Battle of Hattin, but gave a fair amount of time to the massacre of the 3000 Muslims of Acre.

From what I have heard of Saladin and Richard, Saladin probably really was more humanistic than Richard, and the Crusades were not the highest point in Christian tolerance (not that it was the high point in Muslim tolerance either), and I think that this documentary makes it very clear which religious group attacked the other first, and who was nobler of the two great military leaders. Neither the Christians nor their leader look very good in this documentary.

In light of a certain amount of anti-Muslim sentiment in the West following 9/11 and the attacks in Europe, and the ensuing war, it is understandable that the makers of the documentary would look back on the Crusades and find fault in Western behavior. I just find it strange that so many commentators actually thought it biased in favor of Richard I.

The Crusades were a very morally troubling period for both sides to the conflict. There were noble leaders who arose in the midst of it, but no one national, ethnic, or religious group was free of blame for the bloody path that it took. This documentary, like many others produced by Westerners, turns the bulk of the criticism inwardly, and examines the role played by Europe in perpetuating the conflict.

This extensive and exclusive DVD celebrates the 225th anniversary re-enactment of America s momentous 1781 Revolutionary War victory at Yorktown, Virginia. The four-day commemorative event was held October 19-22, 2006, with many of the events staged on the original field. Four different battle re-enactments feature re-enactors from around the world portraying Continental Soldiers, American Militia and Riflemen, German Hessians, British Regulars, the French Army in America as well as cavalry, artillery, camps, 18th century women and sutlers. Our cameras were "embedded" with these soldiers on the field of battle and in their camps, carrying the viewer on this journey to final victory in the American Revolution. For the first time in 225 years, and within days of the actual anniversary of the formal British surrender, nearly 2,000 re-enactors met on the original, hollowed "Surrender Field" to commemorate the British defeat to the allied American and French forces led by General George Washington. Never since 1781 had this event been re-staged so authentically. Directed by multi-award winning filmmaker Kevin R. Hershberger, this is a commemorative DVD unlike any other ever produced about the American Revolution. with exciting sound effects, dynamic editing and cameras that were "embeded" with these 18th century soldiers - this DVD is an unprecedented document of a justly honored battle for American Independence.

Australian teenager Jesse Martin became the youngest person to sail solo, unassisted, and nonstop around the world, and his battles against monumental obstacles are chronicled in Lionheart, much of which Martin shot himself with a video camera mounted aboard his sailboat. Martin's 1999 journey was inspirational (25,000 people assembled to watch him arrive back home in Australia at the journey's end), and the film plays heavily upon the theme of Martin being a role model for young people. Some of the many who were rooting for him, including Peter Garrett of the Aussie rock band Midnight Oil, appear on camera to speak glowingly of Martin's determination. The footage, including some searing scenes of him freaking out while his boat was being battered by relentless bad weather, is dramatic. But at times the inherently claustrophobic nature of the tiny cabin on the small boat seems to undermine the drama taking place on the open ocean. --Robert J. McNamara

    Description

As a 17-year-old teenager, Jesse Martin set out on a journey to fulfill a dream few thought possible. From the joy of watching dolphins chase Lionheart to the dramatic moments as Jesse battles terrifying storms and unrelenting knockdowns, this documentary captures all the highs and lows of his incredible journey. This is truly a story of sheer inspiration and the power of chasing a dream that will uplift and motivate people of all ages.

My Wife & I purchased the Lionheart DVD after reading the book of the same name.

What a fantastic documentary! The film was put together very well, using footage taken from the trip by Jesse, then linked with post-trip interviews. The result was a film that was powerful in its message, as well as being very moving and inspiring.

Buy this DVD - it WILL change how you view the world and the opportunities you have within it.

    3 out of 5 stars Lionheart.......2005-10-05

    Lionheart
    Jesse Martin

Lionheart is an autobiography written by Jesse Martin, who sailed around the world by himself. Jesse Martin sailed around the world, unassisted and non-stop when he was only 17 years old, trying to break a world record. I wanted to read this book because it looked very interesting. I wanted to know what it would be like to sail around the world alone. This is a story about the journey of the human spirit.
Jesse learned to sail when he was very young in Australia where he lived. He sailed on a flimsy catamaran with his dad and brother when he was 14. He also did a kayaking trip with his brother around some of the islands of Australia. When he was a little older, he sailed around the world with his friend Dave on a yacht. All these trips slowly prepared and inspired him for his solo trip around the world. "I was going to attempt to become the youngest person to sail, solo, non-stop and unassisted around the world (pg. 49)."
Jesse only had half a year to prepare for his journey (because of his age, he wanted to be the youngest person to sail solo, non-stop and unassisted around the world). He sent in letters for sponsorship to many companies. Jesse's main sponsor was an electric company called Mistral. He also had to pack food for 9 months. He found a nutritionist named Jacinta Oxford. He also had to prepare his yacht, the Lionheart. He had to get sails, solar panels for power, wind vanes, and safety items. After all the preparing, he was finally able to leave. All the preparing got Jesse more ready and organized for the trip. " No gun shot to mark the start, and no spectators. Just my Dad somewhere around me on his small catamaran, a distant observer in the lighthouse, and the setting sun to witness what was the biggest moment of my short life (pg 97)."

The journey around the world had begun. There were lots of storms on the first part of the journey. But, he finally got past Cape Horn, which boosted his confidence way up. After that, he barely had any wind. When he reached the Azores his family was there and he got another boost of confidence and raced towards home. He rounded the Cape of Good Hope and sailed through the finish line. When he got back home, he was greeted by thousands of people and the media. On his trip, he learned what he was capable of doing anything he set his mind to do. But if he learned anything from the trip, he learned more about himself. "But I have the most important ability in the world- the ability to dream (pg 240)."
Jesse Martin set out on this trip to learn. He learned what it felt like to be alone for 10 months. He learned how to sail solo and courageously, but he also learned about himself. He learned he had the ability to dream. His dreams and thoughts inspired him throughout the trip. His dreams led him to learn how to sail, to sail with his dad and brother, and to sail around the world by himself. Because he could dream the world knows what he is capable of, but more importantly, he knows he is capable of everything.

    5 out of 5 stars An all-time favorite .......2005-01-19

Bottom line first: This is a must-read book, among the best to be found.

I actually saw the film on DVD first. I found it one day more than a year ago while surfing for some information on sailing. It looked interesting, and I have a large DVD collection, so I added one more. But it was much more than I imagined, so good, in fact, that I bought the book, which was even better. I've read and re-read it many times, and I show the DVD to any friends who will sit and watch. I was actually so compelled by it that I sought Martin's email address and began a correspondence with him.

In November of 2004, had the opportunity to travel to Australia and Papua New Guinea to meet Jesse and all of his family. They are, each and every one, the nicest people I've ever met. My assessment of Jesse is that while he may have peers, there is no finer person on the planet! That may sound pompous or even ridiculous, but I stand by the remark emphatically.

Everyone, young or old, should read Jesse's book, see his video, and watch for more coming in the future. "Lionheart" is by no means Jese's first or last adventure. I've read a draft of his upcoming book, which is yet another winner. He's so down-to-earth and real, I think he's unable to write a clunker! They're all great... I've ordered copies to donate to my local library!

5 out of 5 stars The Best Book Ever.......2004-10-06

If you like reading about adventure/nature , this is the book for you. Jesse's is a very talented man and he should be a source of inspiration for all of us. This is my favorite book in the entire world and i can't wait to read the new book. :)

    4 out of 5 stars Extraordinary true-life story.......2004-09-04

We happened upon this film on satellite TV recently and were captivated. Jesse Martin, the Australian who at age 17 set out to become the youngest person to sail around the world alone, does not appear to be an extraordinary teen-ager. Yet he displayed a wisdom and poise that was truly remarkable as he embraced the challenge. This short documentary combines interviews after the journey with footage shot by Jesse with his onboard camera. There is great beauty in his footage (dolphins, whales, Cape Horn, etc.), tedium (no wind), humor and delight (Jesse playing the guitar and singing, reminding one a lot of Tim Robbins in "Bull Durham"), typical teenage grumblings at little things going wrong, and lots of footage of the power of the ocean against a small sail-boat. In a gut-wrenching scene toward the end of his journey, Jesse is battling one storm after another, experiencing terrifying knock-downs, and he is seen on camera shivering uncontrollably from the extreme cold and his being soaked through to the skin with no way to get dry and warm. It was clear from the accompanying interview that Jesse knew he was facing death that day and his breakdown on camera is unforgettable. His tumultous welcome home by 25,000 people at the end of the journey was well deserved.

This is a remarkable story of the strength of the human spirit. Highly recommended.

        Description

Their extraordinary stories are part of the fabric of a nation: they were men of royal blood whose deeds shaped the past and built the foundation of England as it is today.

Alfred the Great... lawmaker, scholar and scourge of the Danes.
William the Conqueror... courageous warrior and ruthless politician.
Richard the Lionheart... fearless crusader and central figure in one of England's most enduring legends.
King Henry VIII... much-married autocrat and founder of the Church of England.
King Charles I... the Royal Martyr.

Featuring accurately dramatized reconstructions, superb period imagery plus commentary and analyses by a team of leading authorities, these films are your ticket for a voyage through the pages of English history...

Few kings in English history deserve the title "great" more than Alfred, King of Wessex.

In an age and country devastated by Viking invasions, Alfred inflicted a major defeat upon the Norseman at Edington in 878 and set about conquering the Danelaw territory to secure the unity of England. The great king also organized his forces into a standing army and built a navy.

However, Alfred was not only a fine warrior and a natural leader; he was also a lawmaker and a scholar, working to improve the kingdom's laws as well as encouraging the further education of his people.

This is the story of William, the first Norman King of England.

It was on the bloody battlefield of Hastings in 1066 that William, Duke Of Normandy, defeated and killed the gallant but battle-weary Harold II of England. From that day forward, England would never be the same. Multiple uprisings in the north were mercilessly crushed and a new ruling class of Norman Barons was gradually established within the region.

This program paints a unique portrait of a remarkable man who was at once a great warrior and a ruthless politician and statesman. The architect of the Domesday book, builder of Westminster Abbey and countless other beautiful churches, William the Conqueror's twenty-year reign truly shaped the future of England.

The reign of Richard Coeur de Lion (Richard The Lionheart) was one of the most eventful and colorful in England's long history.

The third son of Henry II, Richard devoted his life to crusading and defending his lands in France -only five months of his ten year reign were spent in England. An outstanding and courageous soldier, he was arrested and imprisoned in Germany in 1193: his brother John tried to seize the crown, and the enduring legend of Robin Hood was born.

England has never seen a more colorful monarch than King Henry VIII.

His unyielding power over the thrown was constantly overshadowed by his infamous matrimonial problems, which had such a profound effect on a deeply religious country. A man of passionate nature, he also possessed a cruel streak, the King's six wives will forever adorn the pages of history.

From dashing youth to gout-ridden old age, this is the story of `Good King Hal.'

No one has ever doubted King Charles' deeply held religious beliefs, his love for his family or his many qualities as King. But his duplicity and procrastination contributed greatly to the bloodshed of the English Civil Wars and to his own eventual downfall. How could a man so good be so bad a king?

`King Charles I' features reconstructions and re-enactments, dramatized `eye-witness' accounts, superb period imagery and commentary and analyses to tell the dramatic story of England's most tragic monarch.

3 out of 5 stars Informative, but Cheap and Possibly Offensive.......2007-07-10

This documentary is filled with modern Brits dressing and acting as medieval people, so this will remind you of "Monty Python's Holy Grail." The work mentions Sherwood Forest, King John, and a returning king, so it may also remind you of the many version of Robin Hood.

I was pleased to learn about Richard the Lion-Hearted. I'm a bit surprised that medieval British people knew about lions, but perhaps they learned about them through the Romans and their past coliseum games. Unlike other documentaries where the homosexuality of celebrated, historical figures is denied, this work was bold enough to mention that Richard liked males. However, the narrator states that he was handsome, yet the actor portraying him has Steve Buscemi-like qualities. The Europeans and the Arabs didn't just fight each other in the Crusades; the kings of the warring groups knew and had contact with each other. This may make people think too much about "300" and other current schisms between the West and the Middle East. Be careful as a viewer.

Old James Bond movies didn't have realistic car chases. They had characters pretend to drive as a screen of a busy highway plays in the background. This used the same cheap trick. The documentary makers did not take the actors to the desert; they just show a screen with a desert background. They have one actor who actually looked like he was of Arab descent. However, for the Saladdin the king, they put heavy brown makeup and fake facial hair on an actor. This type of "brownface" seemed too much like the racist "blackface" used in the 1800s in the United States. I am sure Britain has many talented, Arab actors who could have played the role. The use of this racial drag is offensive, and possibly racist. Further, the actor uses an accent that sounded more French than Arabic. The narrator, in addition, had poor French pronunciation skills.

            Description

Of all the Kings of England, none captured the public imagination quite like Richard 1, the Lionheart. To his subjects, Richard was tall, handsome and athletic, a true hero, a fitting monarch and for more modern enthusiasts, the legendary protector of the much-loved outlaw Robin Hood and his band of merry men. Where Richard the Lionheart's concerned, it has however been a case of the truth never being allowed to get in the way of a good story, because this is an incredible tale of a Plantagenet King who was not necessarily quite what history would have us believe. Of the ten years Richard was on the throne, he literally spent only seven months in England and he cost the nation an abolute fortune, firstly to fight the Crusades in the Holy Land and secondly for payment of a King's Ransom when he was captured. ''Richard the Lionheart'' is a programme designed to take you on a journey of discovery to follow in the footsteps of this powerful, Royal, Crusader Knight who convinced the world, past, present, and probably future, that he truly was the best King of England that money could buy.

4 out of 5 stars Solid Doc on Richard The Lionheart!.......2006-10-24

Enjoyed watching this documentary. Helped me to understand the story of Richard the Lionheart. Some good detailed information about the events and places. Although the pacing could be a bit faster I enjoyed this program and will show it to my family.

1 out of 5 stars Poor quality, amateur-ish and inaccurate.......2006-08-06

This is an extremely low-quality documentary: an over-simplistic script, with poor quality graphics (hideous cartoons of the kings, and some of the castles depicted are not the ones that are mentioned), and a narrator, Sue Hosler (also the producer), who sounds as if she's reading very slowly for the benefit of small children taking dictation.

It is very Anglo-centric, looking at Richard's acts only in terms of how they affected England, and ignoring the fact that the mainland part of the Angevin Empire was far more important. It makes the Third Crusade look like Richard's doing, and ignores the dispute over the succession to the throne of Jerusalem. It omits the real reason for Richard's arrest by Leopold of Austria - suspicion of the murder of Conrad of Montferrat, King of Jerusalem - and simply blames Richard's "poor people-skills" for alienating Leopold. "Poor people-skills" is an interesting euphemism for being suspected of arranging a stabbing.

The Robin Hood legends are mentioned, as if they grew out of the circumstances of Richard's reign in 12C; in fact, they are 14C, and Walter Scott is largely responsible for associating them with the 12C in 'Ivanhoe', a novel. The Blondel myth is also trotted out, and that of the crock of gold at Chalus.

I can only think that this is aimed at schoolchildren, and even then is of such a low standard, I would be worried by its use in schools. Avoid.
