Billy Bob Thornton wrote, directed, and starred in this mesmerizing drama with haunting overtones of To Kill a Mockingbird. Thornton plays a mentally retarded man who has spent 20 years in a psychiatric hospital for killing his mother and her lover. Released into the community from which he came, he befriends and protects a lonely boy regularly harassed and abused by his mom's boyfriend (a terrific performance by Dwight Yoakam). The story is ultimately about sacrifice, but Thornton certainly doesn't get twinkly about it. Some of the best material concerns the hero's no-big-deal efforts to integrate into a "normal" life: working, eating fast food, earning admiration for his handyman skills, and attaining a semblance of community among other damaged souls. John Ritter has a great part as a gay shopkeeper who tries to assuage his own loneliness by spilling his guts out to Thornton's uncomprehending character. --Tom Keogh

one of billy bobs best performances ever. movie had great depth and kept you wanting more.

5 out of 5 stars Billy Bob Thornton's Meisterwerk.......2007-07-20

An outstanding film by any standards - superbly directed, beautifully acted, an original story line and a rare build-up of suspense. I saw it when it was first released and acquired the DVD as part of my (highly selective) library. Congratulations, BBT - a wonderfully-crafted film.

5 out of 5 stars Sling Blade.......2007-07-17

Alternately haunting and sweetly affecting, "Sling Blade" is a beautifully accomplished debut by actor-director Billy Bob Thornton, who conceived, wrote, directed and starred in this absorbing drama. (He won an Oscar for his original screenplay.) Thornton's cathartic, humane portrayal of Childers--a mild-mannered simpleton who quietly protects and cares for Frank and his mom but is haunted by the past--stirs our deepest sympathies. In a nuanced turn, the late John Ritter excels as Linda's gay friend Vaughan, but the real surprise is country singer Dwight Yoakam, whose hateful, hard-drinking Doyle guides the film's tragic final act.

5 out of 5 stars Sling Blade .......2007-06-27

This story really shows just how we think of people that are a little slower than the rest. But, at the end you will see who is the retarded ones. I love this movie and watch it time & time again. The actors are great and the plot is even better. You must see it.

5 out of 5 stars Slingblade.......2007-06-27

This is a fantastic movie. An open-minded person with an understanding for special needs people...you'll love this one. Many of us that have seen this movie have agreed we believe it's Billy Bob Thornton's best ever.

3 out of 5 stars it was ok.......2007-09-14

I heard all this hype about Daryll Hannah in this movie.....It was ok. it'd be interesting to see a remake of this movie.

1 out of 5 stars NOT CLEAR THAT THIS IS THE DIRECTOR'S CUT.......2007-09-14

It is very unclear from the description that this is the so called director's cut, which is much different than the original theatrical release. In fact, no where does it explicitly say that's what it is.

Please make this more clear! People should know what they are getting here.

5 out of 5 stars Best Sci - Fi movie ever!!!!!.......2007-09-14

Produced in 1982, this film was so far ahead of it's time but filled with enough realism it separated itself from the Star Wars saga that seemed to never end.
The acting alone is about as superb as you'll ever see. The lighting and film effects were enough that it didn't detract from the story of the movie as say a James Bond film does (IMO).
The film was later even used to base a White Zombie song on "More Human Than Human.
I would have liked to have seen at least one follow up to this film but unfortunately the writer died I believe before the movie was even made? It's also one of the first films ever released on DVD also (The Original Voice over version).
Captivating and star-studded it shows many at the very beginning of their careers.
Not only is this Harrison Ford's best performance but one that will make him endure through the years in Hollywood as a genuinely great actor.

The best part of the movie is it leaves you thinking about some of the pauses and unsaid things in the movie. One that's captured the attention of Bladerunner fans for many years was "is Harrison Ford's character a Replicant"? I found out the answer to that after watching the movie the second time ;).

5 out of 5 stars Sci Fi Future.......2007-07-23

How do you explain this movie? I guess you just have to watch it and try to understand it. Certainly a movie for those who love to watch Harrison Ford, and Rutger Hauer. Sean Young is quite good in it too. Set in the future, it's crazy and noisy. He has to try and find androids and kill them. But is he one himself?

4 out of 5 stars Not as good as the 1982-version........2007-07-10

I miss Harrison Ford's voiceover. To delete it just leave the movie somewhat guttet. The few extra seconds of violence just seems like cheep ultra-violence. Something experimental from a bygone age. - I love Blade Runner; But I miss the 1982-version. I agree with those how thinks that the Director's Cut didn't add anything, it only removed something from the movie. And I don't feel I can pay 160 British Pounds for the 1982-versions...

Product Description

Rick Deckard (Harrison Ford) prowls the steel-and-microchip jungle of 21st Century Los Angeles. He's a "blade runner" stalking genetically made criminal replicants. His assignment: kill them. Their crime: wanting to be human.

The story of Blade Runner is familiar to countless fans. But few have seen it like this. Because this is director Ridley Scott's own vision of his sci-fi classic. This new version omits Deckard's voice narration, develops in slightly greater detail the romance between Deckard and Rachael (Sean Young) and removes the "uplifting" finale. The result is a heightened emotional impact: a great film made greater. Most intriguing of all is a newly included unicorn vision that suggests that Deckard may be a humanoid. Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? Is Deckard a replicant? As with all things in the future, you must discover the answer yourself.

Running Time: 116 min.

5 out of 5 stars Great flick!! A classic sci-fi!.......2007-08-06

Loved this movie when I first saw it in (1989?) Rutger Bauer is outstanding, as is Harrison Ford.

2 out of 5 stars disturbing, boring, and depressing.......2007-07-14

I'm a Harrison Ford fan, and was dissapointed in and depressed by this film. The plot, doalog, and action were glacial. The ceaseless rain, 2019 LA smog, gloom, hyper-stimulation, and overcrowding were depressing; and I didnt care much whether Ford found the "Replicants" or not. The Hollywood formula guaranteed he would, with suitable travail. The film's special visual effects were well done for the time, and added to my depression. I wondered if the directors / produceers meant this to be a visual morality play about our current overpopulation / media overstimulation / and ecological shifts in California. If so, it didnt make much impression on our society.

I wound up skipping ahead on the downloaded CD to see what happened. I will not watch this film again or buy the CD. Ugh.

5 out of 5 stars Highly recommended.......2007-06-15

If you're a Blade Runner fan, this is the one to own.

2 out of 5 stars Something has been lost since I first saw this movie.......2007-06-01

I heard the "suits" at Warner made Scott add the voice over because they thought the movie's plot was too vague without it, looks like they were right. But this movie has other weaknesses. First the FX which set the mood has lost much of its power to impress, granted that can't be helped, but its still a fact. The not so subtle Japan bashing, from a time when Japan was seen as our #1 threat, seems as corny today as a Red Scare movie from the `50s. Last the endless philosophizing by beings, that don't exist, and probably never will, on the subject of "are skin jobs human". Maybe expecting a movie to have the same impact 25 years later is unrealistic, or maybe it was based on once trendy now passé ideas.

5 out of 5 stars A deep look at humanity.. basic existencialism..and dystopia.......2007-05-10

43 yo No qualifications whatsoever as movie critic

This is one of my favorite films. I write recalling the first time I viewed it, somewhere in the mid 80's while in the university. The images and hidden messages is something that will captivate you and encourage always to look for some detail that may have been overlooked (trust me this is a movie to be seen)....fantastic images.. and yes.. Vangelis does the soundtrack...atmospheric setting

To me geniality of the movie lies in the fact of telling a tragic tell of a group of "humanoids"- improved biological replicas designed to have amazing physical powers- they were created to do chores and jobs such as soldiers, inter-stellar explorers and "pleasure models". Replicas have one limitation by design, they cannot live more than 4 years.

The replicas are manufactured by a supercorporation, whose CEO is a genious who still lives in earth (a place mostly inhabited by the degenerate, outcasts and unfit to pass the migration criteria for interplanetary travel).. a group of rebelious replicas want a to meet with their Creator and asks for more life, a request that this mortal god cannot concede... Harrison Ford is a retired "skin remover" - that is , a policeman in charge of removing replicas- that is forced back to his former job to help take the group of replicas or "become little people". He is a antiheroe we can quickly relate to.. the world is now a babelistic mixture of tongues, so we hear chinese, spanish and english words as a background of street pappiamento. No I am not going to spoil it for you.

At least the replicas have the chance to find their creator- they are moved by our same existencialistic motives, but they are not given the paths of faith to find the answers. What do they want? I guess the same as everyone else, they just want a fair share of life- We have created new slaves whose notion of equality is just to live longer or at least as much as we do.

I wonder what would I do if I found my maker and could openly ask for more life, and find out he has limitations on that? A god with limitations, if we could forget the damn Aristotelic and Scholastic tradition of the contradiction of such a term, and we indeed find a god- made into our same image- and listen to his benevolent amorous advice and consolation- but realice that- "Yes Virginia (I am so sorry to say)- there is no santa claus"-

I forgot where I read it, was it Nietche, was it Schopenhauer?, oh well, it goes like this " truth can only belong to those who can bear it"

In spanish sound better "La verdad es de quien la pueda soportar"

So many angles to start an interesting discussion with a group of good friends over a good argentinian Malbec wine.

Description

EL MARIACHI: All he wants is to be is a mariachi, like his father, his grandfather and his great grandfather before him. But the town he thinks will bring him luck brings only a curse of deadly mistaken identity. Forced to trade his guitar for a gun, the mariachi is playing for his life in this critically-acclaimed film debut from director Robert Rodriguez. Financed with earnings from a month-long stay in a research hospital, this astonishing action adventure was shot with no second takes, using borrowed equipment and a talented cast of unknowns. The riveting result is a wild bullet-dodging ride through a world of bandido violence, from the suspense of the opening shoot-out to the tragedy of the unexpected conclusion. With little more than a great story and a lot of heart, Rodriguez has created pure movie pleasure, setting new standards for independent filmmaking, and establishing himself as an unquestionable talent. "An enormously entertaining movie." (Roger Ebert, CHICAGO SUN-TIMES). DESPERADO: Antonio Banderas, Joaquim De Almeida, Salma Hayek, Steve Buscemi, Cheech Marin and Quentin Tarantino star in this stylish shoot-'em-up described as a south-of-the-border Pulp Fiction. Director Robert Rodriguez follows up his legendary debut film, El Mariachi, with this sexy sequel about a mysterious guitar player (Banderas) searching for vengeance against the men who murdered his girlfriend. ONCE UPON A TIME IN MEXICO: Leaping back into action, gun-slinging, guitar-toting hero "El Mariachi" is back in town in ONCE UPON A TIME IN MEXICO, as director Robert Rodriguez delivers the epic final chapter of his pulp Western trilogy. Starring Antonio Banderas, Salma Hayek, Johnny Depp, Mickey Rourke, Eva Mendes, Enrique Iglesias and Willem Dafoe ONCE UPON A TIME IN MEXICO is a full-frontal assault.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Awesome!.......2007-06-08

An absolutely terrific box set and a must have for all Robert Rodriguez fans. The Mexico Trilogy is great fun and the box set, with all three movies as well as all special features from the individually sold films, is quite a bargain at only $21. A great buy for sure!

5 out of 5 stars "Boy with camera" grows up.......2007-03-24

Starting with "Bedhead", and traveling through the Mexico Trilogy (sprinkled with a little "Spy Kids" here and there), you can see him educate himself and develop into a talented film maker. And he shares what he's learned with his audience along the way, by including his "Ten Minute Film (and Cooking) Schools".
You get the feeling, watching the special features included with the DVD packages, that he never sleeps, and that he needs to control all aspects of his creations, so that they are HIS and no one elses. This is a fine way to be (think Orson Welles); but I hope he can keep a grip on reality.

5 out of 5 stars Greatest Trilogy Ever.......2007-02-12

I watched all three of these movies. Fantastic. It's your typical shoot'em up movie with a vengeance. Great Price for all three. Does not take away from shelve space. Perfect.

5 out of 5 stars Loved it!.......2007-01-04

Bought it for the second movie - Desperado - which I loved, but ended up loving the first movie - El Mariachi - even more! Even though it's subtitled and in Spanish, it gives the beginning of the story and is campy and gritty, obviously low-budget but it's great. If you like foreign films and anything to do with Robert Rodriguez, you'd love this set of movies and it'd be worth adding to your collection.

5 out of 5 stars The best........2006-11-10

What is there to say... These movies have it all from drama, comedy, action, ect... If you're a dude get it for the action and gun fights, and for you ladies d'uh its got Antonio Banderas for you in there. Anyhoo stop reading this and buy it.

The recipe for Blade is quite simple; you take one part Batman, one part horror flick, and two parts kung fu and frost it all over with some truly campy acting. What do you get? An action flick that will reaffirm your belief that the superhero action genre did not die in the fluorescent hands of Joel Schumacher. Blade is the story of a ruthless and supreme vampire slayer (Wesley Snipes) who makes other contemporary slayers (Buffy et al.) look like amateurs. Armed with a samurai sword made of silver and guns that shoot silver bullets, he lives to hunt and kill "Sucker Heads." Pitted against our hero is a cast of villains led by Deacon Frost (Stephen Dorff), a crafty and charismatic vampire who believes that his people should be ruling the world, and that the human race is merely the food source they prey on. Born half-human and half-vampire after his mother had been attacked by a blood-sucker, Blade is brought to life by a very buff-looking Snipes in his best action performance to date. Apparent throughout the film is the fluid grace and admirable skill that Snipes brings to the many breathtaking action sequences that lift this movie into a league of its own. The influence of Hong Kong action cinema is clear, and you may even notice vague impressions of Japanese anime sprinkled innovatively throughout. Dorff holds his own against Snipes as the menacing nemesis Frost, and the grizzly Kris Kristofferson brings a tough, cynical edge to his role as Whistler, Blade's mentor and friend. Ample credit should also go to director Stephen Norrington and screenwriter David S. Goyer, who prove it is possible to adapt comic book characters to the big screen without making them look absurd. Indeed, quite the reverse happens here: Blade comes vividly to life from the moment you first see him, in an outstanding opening sequence that sets the tone for the action-packed film that follows. From that moment onward you are pulled into the world of Blade and his perpetual battle against the vampire race. --Jeremy Storey

5 out of 5 stars wesley snipes is one bad dude.......2007-07-09

The more I see this movie, the more I really, really enjoy it. While the entire Blade trilogy is wonderful, like most movies, its the first of the series that is tough to beat. The sequals might be loaded with some great action and loads of other fun, but overall, its the first Blade movie that sparkles in many ways.

The great things about Blade, if you haven't seen it yet, is that its like a couple of movies in one. If you love martial arts and all out kick butt hardcore action, this is loaded with it. If you like a "good" vampire movie, this is also that. If you are into some pretty cool characters, and actors that do a fantastic job making them seem just down right cool, this is loaded with that too. Perhaps the best thing, is Wesley Snipes, who takes a hero character and adds so much toughness to him, he almost could pass for a villain, and turns out to be just one bad dude who is extremely fun to watch.

Although the film isn't filled with a lot of dialouge, I found the story to be enjoyable and very well presented. Pacing is just fantastic in this film as there is always something cool happening, and usually, its a whole lot of action. Every action scene is different, yet very well done. Choreography is great and the fights come off as looking and sounding very hardcore. Martial arts action is definetly present, and is best witnessed in a final duo between the main opponents, Deacon Frost & Blade. It is a 3 minute fight that is fast, furious, and has some seriously sweet-lookin moves.

Simply put, this movie rocks. You will feel tougher just watching it. Wesley Snipes will make you want to go work out and start learning sweet one-liners. Blade is one-of-a kind for sure, and its hard to imagine this movie will dissapoint anyone. Again, the best of the series. Production of this film is just great all around.

4 out of 5 stars GREAT MARVEL COMICS MOVIE! ONE OF THE BEST!.......2007-06-25

It is a shame that so many of Marvels better known characters didn't get the fantastic movie treatment that Blade did. This is one exciting movie. Wesley Snipes does a fine job as the title character. The first film is far better than the sequels, but they are all good films. This is the one to watch!

1 out of 5 stars 1 and 1/2 hours of my life I'll never get back.......2007-05-28

dont even bother, unless you're just in it for the fashion and score (some nice techno sounds).

4 out of 5 stars Wesley Snipes is unbelievable in this movie.......2007-04-04

This is a great movie. Wesley is perfect in the role of Blade and Stephen Dorff makes an excellent baddie. It's fast paced, hard hitting from the very beginning and always has me gripped to the end. The fight scenes are brilliant as are the effects. I think the reason I liked it so much was the humor of the characters, it was done in a way that although the film is great it doesn't take itself too seriously.

Many films have been made with vampire subject matter being the main focus. It seems everybody has their take on vampire lore, be it the cross, the silver, the garlic, the aversion to sunlight, whatever. Some of those ideas are included here. The storyline is familiar... a group of vampires conspire to take over the world, with one person (mainly) standing in their way. Blade (Wesley Snipes) lives for the sole purpose of the destruction of the vampires masses, who have slowly but surely moved into the world, and share it with humankind. For the most part, the human race is blind to the fact that vampires exist all around them. The vampires have even taken familiars, people who aspire to be vampires and do the vampires' dirty work for them to show how worthy they are of eventually being "turned."

I just loved the special effects in this movie as well. From the blood-soaked vampire-style rave, all the way to the inevitable fight scene at the end. There's certainly enough blood and gore to go around, but after all, this is a vampire movie. The various shapes and sorts of weaponry Blade uses are fairly unique, and not generally used in contemporary action films. Snipes have more flair with a decked-out sword than he does with, say, a machine gun. Plus, there's so much more thought that goes into fighting with a blade than just blowing someone away. "Blade" isn't exactly like the comic books, but it is a great adaptation to this movie.

5 out of 5 stars Blade.......2007-03-22

I have bought all of the blade movies. I decided to watch it again the other day and had almost finished the movie when it quit and I had to eject the dvd. I had bought this used but never watched it. I threw it in the trash and ordered a new one. I love the blade movies and Wesley Snipes is great in all of them. I also like kris christofferson. This is a movie that is exciting from beginning to end. Pop you some popcorn, get a coke and sit back and enjoy this movie. This deserves a five star rateing.

Guns, guns, guns! And a few explosions as bodies fly through the air and crash into tables and fruit stands. Once Upon a Time in Mexico, like all Robert Rodriguez movies, is all about the kinetic kick of high-velocity action. Johnny Depp, blase and whimsical, plays a CIA agent who's drawn guitar-playing gun-slinger Antonio Banderas (long black hair flopping over his face like the ears of a Labrador puppy) into a ridiculously convoluted plot to overthrow the Mexican government. Along for the ride are a craggy-faced rogue's gallery including Willem Dafoe, Mickey Rourke, Danny Trejo, Ruben Blades, and (to balance things out) the smooth, tantalizing complexions of Eva Mendes and Salma Hayek. For sheer trashy fun, Once Upon a Time in Mexico is a step down from its predecessor, Desperado--but Desperado set the bar pretty high. For coherent storytelling, look elsewhere, but for action razzle-dazzle, this is your movie. --Bret Fetzer

Description

Robert Rodriguez returns with the mythic guitar-singing hero, El Mariachi (Antonio Banderas), in the third installment of the El Mariachi/Desperado trilogy. The saga continues as El Mariachi makes his way across a rugged landscape on the trail of Barrillo (Willem Dafoe), a kingpin who is planning a coup against the president of Mexico. Enlisted by Sands (Johnny Depp), a corrupt CIA agent, El Mariachi demands retribution, and the adventure begins. The character, made famous by Banderas, remains a slinger of guitars and guns, a tragic and bloodied hero, but a survivor forever.

5 out of 5 stars good movie.......2007-05-07

I really enjoyed this movie on Dvd. Now I have to for psp for travel.

2 out of 5 stars It doesn't get any more gratuitous than this..........2007-01-03

If gratuitous violence and gore are in your tastes, you will like this one. Johnny Depp's talent as an actor is obvious but that alone cannot carry this one above the blood-spatter and dismemberment. There are some that like such movies, more power to them. If you are on a low-gore diet, you will want to avoid this one.

5 out of 5 stars AMAZING.......2006-11-03

I absolutely loved this movie. Johnny Depp is such a diverse actor and I love seeing him work.

5 out of 5 stars Top Of Their Game.......2006-10-10

Sure this movie is silly. It's over the top and at times confusing. It's highly unrealistic and savagely brutal. It's also my favorite movie ever. The energy, the colors, the characters, the performances, the settings, the editing, the action sequences, the cinematography, the prodiction design...All top notch. Robert Rodriguez hits all the right notes in this gritty, violent psuedo-western; Antonio is the perfect fit in his best part, and Johnny Depp adds one of the most colorful and refreshing characters to a nice ensemble cast(inc. Mickey Rourke and Willem DaFoe). This movie just goes all out in what it's trying to do, and as far as I'm concerned it's more than successful. Some of the best one liners and action sequences you'll find in any movie, period. I'm just waiting on the prequel that details the life of Agent Sands before he came to be involved with this movie. Could be interesting if Depp would do it...

4 out of 5 stars Johnnie Depp is the Man!!!.......2006-08-15

Review disclaimer:
Please note: This movie was reviewed on my PSP, not the DVD. Also, not sure why Amazone has a "fun factor" for this "movie" not game? Confusing!

As said in an earlier review, Johnnie literally steals the scene, every scene he is in. The whole "eye-hole" with a patch, whoa, blew my mind!

I loved this movie! You will too! Why not rent or purchase from this website? Today!

5 out of 5 stars Amazing trilogy.......2007-07-03

Blade had three movies and none disappointed me. They all had great action, a great story to it, and all had excellent effects. I highly recommend this series to fans of the action genres. Snipes might be reduced to straight to dvd movies now but this is his finest hour.

5 out of 5 stars THIS IA A GREAT SET........2007-06-08

FOR SOMEONE HOW HAS FOLLOWED THESE MOVIES THIS IS A GREAT SET.

5 out of 5 stars A Collection With Bite..........2007-03-20

Sorry for the pun, but the statement is true.

I had never heard of the Blade comics, so when the first movie came out I went in expecting an action-packed thriller.

But, alas, what I found was a new obsession. Immediatly after watching the first movie, which does a good job of bringing the comic characters to life (even if a bit glamorized), I must say that I did not thoroughly read the comics, but rather get a nice feel for the darkness and anti-hero aspects of the Blade character.

But, back to the movies. Here's what I think:

Blade--Great intro film; special F/X are top-notch, stylistic, and fight scenes are choreographed to precision; story fun, but a bit choppy; overall 5/5

Blade 2--Rehash of first story was a bit annoying (watch the first one to know what I mean); F/X bigger/better; fight scenes aided with special effects, but still stylistic with the choreography; overall 4/5 (mostly because vampire gang annoyed me)

Blade Trinity--Great action film all around; introduction of two characters fits well into the franchise (and they both do a good job along side Wesley); more fight scenes, done again with presicion and excellence; much more F/X (good or bad thing); DVD extras are fun too; overall 5/5

In essence, if you are looking for a good 6 hours of exciting action scenes, expertly choreographed fight sequences, and vampires, well this is the triology for you!

5 out of 5 stars Blade Trilogy - The Ultimate Collection.......2007-01-10

For a Vampire killing movie. It is a fun/good adult movie. For something without Violence and a vampire movie I like I was a teenage vampire also a young persons movie.

5 out of 5 stars Blade Trilogy.......2007-01-05

One of the better trilogies around. Exciting, love the sword fights etc. But one does get into them and wants to go on to the next one right away.

Aptly described by critic Roger Ebert as "a vomitorium of viscera," Blade II takes the express route to sequel success. So if you enjoyed Blade, you'll probably drool over this monster mash, which is anything but boring. Set (and filmed) in Prague, the plot finds a new crop of "Reaper" vampires threatening to implement a viral breeding program, and they're nearly impervious to attacks by Blade (Wesley Snipes), his now-revived mentor Whistler (Kris Kristofferson), and a small army of "normal" vampires who routinely combust in a constant conflagration of spectacular special effects. It's up to Blade to conquer the über-vamps, and both Snipes and director Guillermo del Toro (Mimic) serve up a nonstop smorgasbord of intensely choreographed action, creepy makeup, and graphic ultraviolence. It's sadistic, juvenile, numbing, and--for those who dig this kind of thing--undeniably impressive. With the ever-imposing Ron Perlman as a vampire villain. --Jeff Shannon

Description

Get set for more action, more vampires and more Wesley Snipes in this second monster-hit installment in the Blade franchise.

4 out of 5 stars different than first but with loads of fun.......2007-07-10

Its hard for sequals to follow up on a great first installment, especially as one as good as Blade. There are two direction to go, which is stick close to the first film, so that the 2nd seems too much like the first, or go in a differect direction, which might take the story too far from the first film. Blade 2 does the latter, which doesn't provide as an exciting and tightly-developed story as the first Blade, but the tons of action of the first film remains, along with a lot of fun and excitement.

In Blade 2, a virus is transforming the vampires into a breed of supervampires, who are tougher, more agressive, and feed off of the normal vampires on a regular basis. The leader of the vampire nation calls in an elite team of vampires known as the blood pack, who's leader is played by the impressive Ron Pearlman (Hellboy, Alien: Resurrection). Among the team, is also a member played by Donnie Yen (Kill Zone, Shanghai Knights, Hero) for all you martial art fans out there. The team forms a very uneasy truce with Blade, in order to have some help defeating the supervampires and to seek out the vampire nation's leader's son - who has been turned into a supervampire too. Whistler returns to the scene, which is a little confusing after the first film, since it appeared he shot himself. However, Blade 2 decides to bring back his character and explains this in the beginning of the film.

Most of the movie is action packed, and great action at that. The story isn't as sharp as the first, because a lot of screentime is devoted to hunting out the supervampires. About 2/3 through though, story gets a bit more exciting and takes some twists and turns until the end. As for the action, overall there is even more this time around, but several scenes overdo the cgi a little, and it is evident and distracting. For fans of Donnie Yen, he has one very cool scene with exceptional choreography, and his character (though without any dialouge) is just bad (in the cool way). Blade is not quite as cool as in the first film, but he's still just downright fun to watch. He has a final fight against the leader's son, which is 3 minutes of one of the better fights I have ever seen. I loved it more than the final fight in the first Blade. This fight is even faster, harder, and longer. It is definetly an edge of your seat fight.

Blade 2 may not take itself quite as seriously as the first Blade, but it is almost more enjoyable in a fun kind of way. Tons of action, plenty of gore, and even some frightening moments make it seem scarier than the first Blade. A hardcore fan may be dissapointed with the direction the sequal took, but someone looking for an enjoyable movie will still love this.

2 out of 5 stars NO WHERE NEAR AS GOOD AS THE FIRST FILM 2 1/2 STARS.......2007-06-25

There is plenty of action in the sequel to the excellent Blade, but it just doesn't hold up to the first film. The sequel does have some cool FX,but the story just seems silly. It is better than some other Marvel movie that have been done though.

4 out of 5 stars Commentary tracks enhance this "Opera of Brutality".......2007-05-08

There's 334 other reviews so I'll skip the movie comments except to say it was fun.

Snipes and Goyer (the writer) have a good track. Snipes explains the rationale of each of the fight scenes and has stories of stunt mishaps.

The Director, Del Toro and the producer Frankfurt have a party on their track. They mock some of Goyer's dialogue and applaud the stuff that worked just right. A lot of fun.

There's even an isolated score track! (Just the music.)

3 out of 5 stars This movie is a comic book; take it or leave it........2007-01-14

Everything about this movie is completely over-the-top. The colors are strong, the kung fu is fast, the lines are cheesy... if you're expecting a serious movie, you're in the wrong place.

The only major complaint I had with this movie was that the CGIs all pretty much looked like what they were, and there's a fight sequence with no people in it, which is lame. I found the first Blade movie more satisfying, for what it was, but there's only so many times you can watch the first movie.

Also, the commentaries with Guillermo del Toro and the cast are really cool.

2 out of 5 stars Wasted Effort.......2007-01-08

Think about how much money was spent on the special effects for this gruesome movie. You know, I've worked in the funeral business where I've seen real-life gore, and trust me, it's not fun to see. I guess I just never understood the demand for lots of gore in films.

Now that doesn't mean you can't make a good movie with gore and stuff in it. Red Dragon is a good movie with lots of gore. Unfortunately, Blade II just isn't a good movie. It's nothing but vampires getting killed over, and over, and over again. The plot never advances beyond vampires being slaughtered for a good hour and thirty minutes. Doesn't matter that it has lost its shock value after the first five killings. I was thinking the concept of horror films was to put characters in new frightening situations that they haven't yet adapted to so the shock value could carry on. I mean, it doesn't take us 80 minutes to figure out that Blade can kill vampires. And man, the effects are disgusting. I'd rather watch the four most boring Dragnet episodes ever back-to-back than go through another viewing of this.

Adapted from Cormac McCarthy's award-winning novel, All the Pretty Horses cries for epic length but runs only 112 minutes for theatrical release. Drastically shortened during a lengthy stretch between production and release, this operatic drama feels as if huge chunks are missing, and what remains are fragments of a masterpiece that might have been. Unless a more definitive version is revealed, we must settle for this faint echo of McCarthy's ambitious narrative, in which dispossessed Texas rancher John Grady Cole (Matt Damon) ventures to Mexico in 1949 to revive his fading dreams of cowboy glory. With best friend Lacey Rawlins (Henry Thomas), Cole's odyssey takes him from youthful idealism to rugged, often horrific, and ultimately ennobling tests of integrity.

Much of Cole's ordeal is sparked by his forbidden love for Alejandra (Penelope Cruz), the beautiful daughter of his Mexican employer, whose family honor is threatened by their mutual attraction. A gunslinging teenager (Lucas Black) casts a black cloud over them all, and All the Pretty Horses becomes a test of Cole's ability to navigate a labyrinth of distorted truth, imprisonment, and hard-fought redemption. All of which begs for emotional depth and carefully developed characters, but this truncated film lacks both. Scenes jump from one to the next with obvious gaps between them, lending no opportunity for emotional investment. It's clear that director Billy Bob Thornton is attempting to redefine the Western, and the effort is laudable on many points, notably in its perfect match of visuals and a flavorful musical score. There's much to admire in this film, making its shortcomings all the more lamentable. --Jeff Shannon

4 out of 5 stars Totally Underrated.......2007-08-02

I first saw this film in the theater, and was very impressed with it. It was one of the few films from that year that stuck with me long after I viewed it. All The Pretty Horses was a MUCH better film than most critics and audience members gave it credit for. Here are a few reasons why:

1) With lots of movies based on books, whether you have read them or not (and I have not read this one), there is a feeling that permeates the whole film that says, "WE ARE MAKING A MOVIE ADAPTATION OF AN IMPORTANT BOOK." You know what I mean. There's a certain reverential treatment, a feeling that the filmmakers are keeping the material at arms length. This is not so in this film. It stands completely on its own, has an immediate, gritty feel, and gives one the impression that it is the singular vision of the filmmaker.

2) The performances are all excellent. Matt Damon and Lucas Black are especially impressive, but Thornton has coaxed great, understated performances from all.

3) The film explores-with incredible depth and subtlety-both the emotional journey of its characters (especially Damon's and Cruz's) and the journey of a nation (particularly the West). Thornton says so much about both of these journeys with so little, from the smallest change in expression on Damon's face to the symbolic images of fences and wild horses. In many ways this is a coming-of-age story, both for the main characters and for America. Characters make difficult choices, and in doing so, they grow up and accept some difficult consequences. But like a once-wild nation that is growing up, they also leave behind some things of great value.

4) The scenery, music and cinematography are beautiful.

5) The actors pull of some pretty convincing regional Texas accents (I include the word "regional" to counter others' criticism that everyone has different accents in the film--accents vary greatly in different parts of Texas).

6) The relationships between characters are facinating, and very real. The friendship between Damon and Thomas, the way Damon Protects the Blevins character, the ache of the relatinship between the Damon and Cruz characters--all these are so well-played and are given lots of air to breathe in.

This movie could have been even better if Thornton had been allowed to make the 4-hour movie he wanted to make. But that said, it is a near-masterpiece, even with the chop-shop treatment it got from the studio. People who did not like this movie seem to want it to be something it's not.

3 out of 5 stars Losing and winning. .......2007-07-16

A unique story about loss in the American Southwest.
The immigration template is run in reverse. The oft-told narrative is of Hispanics coming to America for a better life that comes with its share of culture shocks. But author Cormac McCarthy's "All The Pretty Horses" has poor Texans crossing into Mexico for a bumpy ride with a wealthy family south of the border. (Yes, Virginia, there are rich Mexicans).
Matt Damon does OK in the lead. Henry Thomas ("E.T.'s" friend Elliott all grown up) is strong in a supporting role. Penelope Cruz, playing Damon's love interest, is barely audible but that adds to her mystery.
Nicely shot and edited movie. Neat meditation on the age-old truism that love always involves losing. Yet loss clears the dross, connecting us better with our essential selves. Recommended.

1 out of 5 stars this one's just awful..........2007-06-12

Not much I can say here that hasn't been said by others. "All the Pretty Horses" (the book) was one of the best novels to be written in the past 20 years. "All the Pretty Horses" (the movie) has been edited to a point where it makes no sense.

Also, John Grady and Alejandra are supposed to be 16 and 17 years old, respectively. In a coming-of-age story, that's kind of important. Matt Damon and Penelope Cruz are WAY too old for the roles.

5 out of 5 stars What is UP with all the negative reviews ?!!.......2007-02-25

I think this is a good film as I explain below. Others on this review area disagree. I can only attribute the many negative reviews for this film to a few possibilities: The movie is certainly not as 'complete' as the book. As with any film-adaptation, the movie bears differences from the book ( though it follows the main theme and plot closely ). The main differences being that scenes had to be deleted from the movie that were in the book. Perhaps many reviewers had read the book and were disappointed by the differences. If the movie is viewed as its own entity, I believe it stands very well by itself and is a great work of art

Other reasons that I can only attribute the bad reviews to are these; Maybe the reviewers wanted the cowboy-main characters to be wise-crack, cocky, with-an-attitude kind of guys like sutherland and harrelson in "The Cowboy Way" and other modern westerns. Or, as other reviewers have said, this wasn't a predominately love-story movie, as perhaps billed.

In any event, All The Pretty Horses definitely makes my list of top movies I've ever seen. The main characters have a certain humility and quietness to their character and their way. I imagine this is the way men who roamed the range in the 1940's probably were - Not like today's urban, fast-talking, slick, always having a witty in-your-face comeback, like so many protanganists in movies today. It's refreshing to see the aforementioned humble and courageous type of character pitted against the unfairness of life.

This movie is about decisions. It is about events that we don't want to happen. That we may try to prevent. And then, when these events happen, more bad fortune follows....almost as we knew it would....and it does. This is the unfairness that is real life. But more than unfairness, the theme of courage and holding to one's honor culminate at the end of the movie.

The music is wonderful and appropriate for the western setting. The acting is very good. There is drama, action, the proper building of expectations and tension and then its resolution, and humorous scenes as well. I agree that the movie could have been longer as I was wanting to watch these characters more. But Hollywood wanted a nice, compact, 'western-romance'.....and Billy Bob, the director, wanted to tell his story of the novel on film.....the compromise that resulted was a shorter film than he wanted. Nonetheless, this film is a well-directed and powerful drama which gives life to the mythic frontiers of the old southwest.

3 out of 5 stars McCarthy this ain't............2007-01-29

If you haven't read the book, you will have a much tougher time enjoying this as it is very difficult to follow standing on it's own. If you've read the book before you saw the movie, then feel perfectly free to B!tch about how it doesn't do any justice to McCarthy's novel, because it doesn't. This movie is flawed and edited to the point of incoherence, you are unable to connect with the characters if you are not already familiar with them. It might have one of the worst soundtracks for a piece of this magnitude that I have ever heard. The reason I am able to give it three stars is because I have read all of McCarthy's books and can find some level of enjoyment watching his work be produced visually, but it just doesn't hold up to the novel in any way. If you're expecting a good old love story, then this is definitely not for you. McCarthy doesn't write heartwarming happy-tales for young lovers. His work deals with grittiness, vast landscapes, morality, mortality, and manhood. I think this is actually the happiest of all of his stories, and it ain't that happy. I hope if they make the second book of the trilogy into a movie, which is actually better than this book, they get a production team capable of handling such a large quantity of material. Billy Bob is just not suited to handle something so big. His strength lies in smaller details and stories, like Sling Blade. The supporting cast is fine, however, and Damon as good of a performance as you could give for a flawed script and being miscast.
Their just aren't to many happy endings when it comes to Cormac McCarthy.

Eddie Murphy needed a comeback after The Adventures of Pluto Nash, but I Spy didn't provide it. As with his previous turkey, Murphy's the least of this movie's problems; his spitfire delivery begs for better plotting and dialogue, and his teaming with Owen Wilson had even more promise than Wilson's Shanghai comedies with Jackie Chan. But this unfunny hash--bearing no resemblance to the 1960s Bill Cosby-Robert Culp TV series that inspired it--undermines Murphy and Wilson at every turn, stranding them in scenes that play well in isolation but never form a coherent action-comedy. It's not that director Betty Thomas is incapable; she just seems uninterested, going through the motions while Eddie, Owen, and Famke Janssen play spy games in Budapest, chasing after a villain (Malcolm McDowell, wasted again) who's stolen a sleek, invisibility-cloaked jet bomber called the Switchblade. Explosions, shootouts, double-crosses... ignore it all, and find what pleasure you can in Eddie and Owen's aimless banter. --Jeff Shannon

I agree with another reviewer that the sewer scene in Hungary is hilarious and the "Sexual Healing" scene is over the top funny! If you enjoyed movies like Old School, Anchorman, or Along came Polly then you won't want to miss this one!

3 out of 5 stars Average Grade Thriller.......2007-03-08

I Spy has little in common with the 1960's TV series of the same name. However, there is just enough juice in I Spy to cause it to rise to the C grade level. True, both Eddie Murphy and Owen Wilson basically phoned their performances in. However, Malcolm McDowell contributes one of his greatest performances ever and this combined with the great cinematography helps to make up for many of the deficiencies in this movie.

Bottom line, this is a decent movie that is worth a rental.
