After the tight plotting and quirky intensity of Fargo, this casually amusing follow-up from the prolifically inventive Coen (Ethan and Joel) brothers seems like a bit of a lark, and the result was a box-office disappointment. The good news is, The Big Lebowski is every bit a Coen movie, and its lazy plot is part of its laidback charm. After all, how many movies can claim as their hero a pot-bellied, pot-smoking loser named Jeff "The Dude" Lebowski (Jeff Bridges) who spends most of his time bowling and getting stoned? And where else could you find a hairnetted Latino bowler named Jesus (John Turturro) who sports dazzling purple footgear, or an erotic artist (Julianne Moore) whose creativity consists of covering her naked body in paint, flying through the air in a leather harness, and splatting herself against a giant canvas? Who else but the Coens would think of showing you a camera view from inside the holes of a bowling ball, or an elaborate Busby Berkely-styled musical dream sequence involving a Viking goddess and giant bowling pins? The plot--which finds Lebowski involved in a kidnapping scheme after he's mistaken for a rich guy with the same name--is almost beside the point. What counts here is a steady cascade of hilarious dialogue, great work from Coen regulars John Goodman and Steve Buscemi, and the kind of cinematic ingenuity that puts the Coens in a class all their own. Be sure to watch with snacks in hand, because The Big Lebowski might give you a giddy case of the munchies. --Jeff Shannon

Not always hard on the logic enough.......2007-08-23
A simple film of total disorganization that is supposed to be funny. It is another "Pulp Fiction", but this time in chronological cutting order. The disorganized impression comes from the totally airy and eerie behavior of the characters. One more or less fake Jew who respects Sabbath when it is practical. An unemployed idler who lives on thin air, fresh water and all kinds of little gains and benefits he can find. A third rather detached younger one who will end up with a massive heart attack on a parking lot. They all play with theirs balls, I mean their bowling balls, because that is the only profession we know they have. Then they get entangled into some kind of embezzling by some rich man who is not rich but wants to pilfer some good amount of cash from the foundation he is a trustee of and at the same time get rid of his youngish latest wife who is hardly grown out of teenage puberty, without going through a divorce. Simple when you are as naïve as dumb can be and you don't know the alpha from the beta, not to mention the omega of crime in LA where you can end up playing the angel in no time. And they manage rather well since two will survive and one will die of too much emotion. Entertaining though slightly slow at times.

High Ranking on the Strange-O-Meter.......2007-08-22
Easily one of the strangest movies I have ever seen, but oddly a title that I felt I needed to own. When I finally added it to my collection, I couldnt figure out why. This is a movie that should be watched by all. Even if you dont like it, you can still say you have seen it and tell your friends just how strange of a movie it really is.
Hilarious.......2007-08-16
Somehow, it never gets old. I've seen it a dozen times and still love it.
Great Movie...........2007-08-05
This is prob in my top 10 favorate movies of all time. its a great buy and definently must have movie.
Goodman wins..........2007-08-04
This is a great and very funny film. A case of mistaken identity leads Jeff Bridges 'Dude' into all sorts of problems. The Dude is extremely laid back (stoned a lot) - the Coens wrote the part for Jeff Bridges.
A number scenes standout, but the Bowling Alley ones are particular favourites of mine. The cast are fantastic, and for me John Goodman as Vietnam Vet Walter just steals the acting honours. Walter is obsessed with Vietnam, to the point where he introduces Vietnam into any conversation regardless of whats being talked about. One of the very last scenes is an extremly funny example of this.
I've lent the film to a lot of people and there is a split with this film between those that love it and those that really don't get it. So if you're unsure catch it on TV or rent it. If you like it you will have to buy it and watch it again very quickly.

Based on Katherine Paterson's young-adult novel and filmed in picturesque New Zealand, Bridge to Terabithia has lessons to impart about empathy and self-expression, but the tone is never heavy-handed. Jesse (sleepy-eyed Josh Hutcherson, Zathura), a fifth-grade loner, lives in the country with his parents and four sisters, including pesky May Belle (Bailee Madison), who adores him. His strict father (Robert Patrick, The Terminator 2) works in a hardware store. Money is tight and classmates make fun of his hand-me-downs, so Jesse finds refuge in running and drawing. Everything changes when two writers and their daughter Leslie (wide-eyed AnnaSophia Robb, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory) move in next door. Leslie is faster than all the boys, which initially puts Jesse off, but the two soon bond over their love of make-believe. In the forest, they find a creek that can only be crossed by rope. Leslie names the land on the other side Terabithia, where they imagine themselves rulers of the kingdom. Jesse and Leslie also connect with their unconventional music teacher, Ms. Edmonds (Zooey Deschanel, Elf), who encourages their creativity. Despite the tension at home, Jesse's personal life is finally coming together when the unthinkable happens. Will he revert to his anti-social ways or will he grow from the experience? Though aimed at all ages, pre-school students may find Terebithia's creatures frightening. For grade-school kids and up, however, there's much to savor in this smartly written, sensitively acted film. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

Wow...Hear that Sound?.......2007-09-10
If you listen very carefully throughout the movie, you will hear a very high-pitched spinning sound throughout the soundtrack. Unfortunately, by the end of the movie you will come to understand that the source of the disturbing audio is Walt Disney spinning with disgust in his grave. Shame on you Walt Disney Company!
Bridge to Terabithia.......2007-09-09
It was a well done movie. Got it and watched with my grandson. Didn't hold his interest the whole time or mine. It was well done and it was good. Just wasn't one of my big favorites but you might enjoy it more than we did.
Heartbreaking And Heartwarming at the Same time. .......2007-09-08
This is the sort of movie that's VERY hard to leave a review for. You dont' want to ruin it for those that HAVENT read the book.
Parents be warned- it was poorly marketed as a FANTASTY, it is not. It has religious undertones, and suprisingly deep content for a childrens film. If you are even sensitive in the LEAST you WILL CRY. I know an older guy, who watched it with his daughter and cried for quite some time afterward. I cried for at least twenty minutes.
The acting by the two leads, and the adult characters is excellent. Annasophia has a Dakota Fanning-like quality to her, making her the PERFECT Leslie, and Josh Huchenson (I honestly cannot remember HOW to spell his last name) as Jesse, really does a fantastic job on his part. (But he's already proven to be a good actor from what we've seen of him on "Zathura".)
Parents- you might want to watch this with your kids and have a "chat" afterward.
Tepid tale of childhood friends.......2007-09-07
Ten-year old Jess, bullied at school and ignored at home, meets new girl Leslie, who's also looked upon as a weirdo and outsider. The two become friends and use their imagination to turn a secret spot in the woods into a beautiful kingdom. In "Terabithia," they rule over the strange but good creatures and battle the Dark Lord. Everything is great, until one day when Jess doesn't come to play.
This movie could have, and should have been wonderful, with flights of fancy that made me say, "WOW!" and touching moments that left me teary. Unfortunately, it missed the mark. The fantasy land the children created wasn't that big of a deal; we only saw fleeting glimpses of it and never had time to be awed by its wonder and wish it were real. The two young leads, Josh Hutcherson and AnnaSophia Robb, were competent, but not special. Neither of them had the charisma to own the screen and make me care about them. Of course, the big culprit was the script, which tried to include too much, ending up with not enough. We get Jess' poverty, artistic talent, and loneliness, Leslie's quirkiness and pluck, the bullies at school, his crush on his teacher, and the often-annoying cute younger sister, complete with precious lisp; with all this, there wasn't time to make Terabithia seem real or as fantastic as it should have been. The scene that should have elicited tears was abrupt and completely lacking in drama and power. So, it's an OK movie if you're stuck watching it on a plane, but not a flick to buy, unless your kids are fans of the book. 2.5 stars.
If you go into this expecting a big fantasy epic.......2007-09-06
....you'll be very disappointed.
This isn't a "Lord of the Rings" or "Narnia" knockoff, its a sweet/moving film about the power of friendship.
AnnaSophia and Josh give wonderful performances as Leslie and Jess, two bullied outsiders who find common ground in their love of make-believe and fastly become good friends.
Jess's home-life is chaotic and crowded... to escape he draws in his sketchbook...
Leslie's parents are writers and sometimes are too busy... her way of escaping is making up stories.
The special effects were great, they didn't overwhelm the story, they merely enhanced it.
There is a death of a young person in this film... the director portrayed this delicately. The anger/disbelief/grief were subtle but believable and not over the top.
Anyone whose ever lost a loved one/friend could relate. I had tears pouring down my face when they announced that this person died. The following scenes in the woods after the funeral were especially heartbreaking and you wonder if this character will pull through or just sink through despair.
I can highly recommend this film... just be sure to have some tissues ready :).
AnnaSophia is an excellent actress for her age... I see a bit of Kirsten Dunst in her. I can't wait to see what else she does.

My Guilty Pleasure!.......2007-09-04
When I got my HD-DVD player last year one of the titles I couldn't wait for was Big Lebowski. I hadn't seen it in several years and when I finally put it in the player, I was so glad I had waited. Not only is the picture and the sound excellent, but this is one of the greatest movies of all time.
The writing is so good. The acting is fantastic (Jeff and John's best acting performances by far). The comedy is still funny after 11 viewings. I still giggle to myself anytime I think about the scene where Walter jumps out of the car "To take the hill" and the machine gun is going off, while the Dude crashes into a telephone pole. Hilarious hilarious all the way through.
Just remember not to spread human ashes on the beach when the wind is blowing. LOL LOL LOL
Amazing movie...even better video quality.......2007-08-29
this HD DVD is amazing! The video and sound quality is amazing and the movie itself is a classic. Oh and as far as the guy below saying Blu-Ray is outselling HD DVD...times are changing quick my friend, check around.
Even if you'd already own the special edition, this one's definitely worth it!.......2007-08-16
I guess I don't need to say much about the movie.
Apart from being my favorite movie with superb acting of the entire cast (including the dog and the toe) and the incredible dumb and hilarious dialogue which still manages to blow my socks off everytime I watch the movie, this version truly is a must have.
No matter which character you (try to) analyze, they are all insane and ingenious, funny and inspiring (except of course the nihilists...)
The HD DVD transfer is far better than anything that came out before. Brightest colors when needed, good natural ones in the shades, sharp as .... well, you almost cut your feet at the rug that used to tie the room together. Sound is perfect, what is there left to say?
Stranger:"Sometimes you eat the bar and sometimes the bar eats you."
The Dude:"That some kind of Eastern thing?"
Com'on folks, let's go bowling! But only after having watched this one, PLEAEAEASE!
Where is the Blu Ray Release?.......2007-08-13
I hate it when a studio does preferential releases. Especially when Blu Ray is outselling HD-DVD 2 to 1! I'm sure once the format was is over, this will see a release on the opposing format. It just sucks we have to wait for one of the funniest movies ever made to be watchable on the PS3.
The Dude.......2007-08-08
The Dude definitely says that this is one of the greatest movies ever made - wow - what a great picture - have to love HD

X-Men: The Last Stand is the third installment in the popular superhero franchise, and it's an exciting one with a splash of fresh new characters. When a scientist named Warren Worthington II announces a "cure" for mutant powers, it raises an interesting philosophical question: is mutant power a disease that needs a cure, or is it a benefit that homo superior enjoys over "normal" human beings? No surprise that Magneto (Ian McKellen) and his Brotherhood of Evil Mutants resist the idea that they need to be cured, and declare war on the human race. But it's a little tougher for the X-Men, led by Professor X (Patrick Stewart), Cyclops (James Marsden), and Storm (Halle Berry). If you're Rogue (Anna Paquin), for example, your power means you can't even touch your boyfriend, Iceman (Shawn Ashmore). To compound matters, someone previously thought dead has returned, and might be either friend or foe.
With director Bryan Singer having moved on to Superman Returns, the franchise passes to the hands of Brett Ratner (Rush Hour), whose best work is done in the big action sequences such as a showdown between mutant armies. But it's difficult to manage the sheer volume of characters when adding longtime comic-book stalwarts such as Beast (Kelsey Grammer) and Angel (Ben Foster), and one character in particular deserved better than an off-screen dismissal. And fans of the original Dark Phoenix comic book story might be underwhelmed by the movie's resolution. X-Men: The Last Stand is presumably the last film in the series, but the ambiguous ending leaves possibilities open. Look for the two writers most responsible for making the X-Men who they were, Stan Lee and Chris Claremont, in early cameos. --David Horiuchi

X-Men 3.......2007-09-08
This would be a good movie IF it were not called X-Men. They have completely sabotaged the X-Men storyline from the comics. They came up with new stories, which is sometimes ok, but not here. Jean Grey is barely used, Storm looks weak and undecisive, and Scott, why did they even have him there? THe movie left too many things unexplained, changed the X-men Universe and forgot to give some depth to the characters. This is just an action film and only that. Only Wolverine saves the day and the movie.
For the Child in All of Us.......2007-09-03
Rarely does a movie make me so irritated. After all, it's just a movie. Call me insecure but I resent having my intelligence so obviously mocked. I'm glad I watched it on HBO for the price of cable. The thought that I might have paid to sit through this in the theater is just depressing. A thrown together live-action cartoon movie without depth, style, substance or a whit of genuine insight. A thinly veiled children's movie & two hour toy commercial. At least the first two X-Men were simple-minded mildly intriguing escapist fun. More intelligent than post-Connery-pre-Daniel Craig James Bond but less so than the Spider-Man movies. X3 is just money grubbing dreck that insults it's diehard fan base most of all. There is absolutely no indication that the filmmakers even tried to make a good movie.
I don't know what aspect of the movie I find the most tiresome. So much to choose from. Maybe the indifferent mailed-in acting by otherwise talented actors (McKellen, Stewart, Jackman, Berry, Paquin, etc.) Purhaps the silly, illogical, inconsistent, scribbled down script filled with convenient but insupportable leaps in logic is the most grating. The banal grade school dialogue and emotions are a good candidate. So is the lack of character development. To say the pacing is incompetent is to imply the director, scriptwriter or editor even tried at all. The poorly choreographed and rather boring action scenes were particularly irritating because the previous two X-men did, at least, have exciting action. I think what bothers me the most is the fact that it cost millions and millions to make and was made without the slightest respect for it's audience. That's enough. I think I've exercised my spleen & made my contempt plain enough. I feel much better now.
Quite good, finally..........2007-08-31
I was disgusted by the cliched and obtrusive politics of the first two X-men flicks. I almost felt like identifying with Magneto. But the action, when they got to it, was impressive and left you wanting for more. Someone wrote here at Amazon that this third instalment was less politics and more action. I don't remember whether the person considered that as a compliment. But it seemed like a compliment to me, so I picked up the flick. I was quite pleasently surprised. Or let's say my hopes were fulfilled. Great action, and no obtrusive catering to trendy liberals. Way to go, I say. Every film like this means a little bit more entertainment from Hollywood, and a little bit less propaganda. I only wish they had been more brutal with Logan at the climax. They could have shown some of his adamantium skeleton there. Remember the end of Terminator II? A good dramatic opportunity missed, a good allusion opportunity missed, too. The climax wasn't quite as climactic as it could have been. Wolverine's healing mechanism seemed to be a bit too powerful there for a while, and then it was all over, the climax, I mean.
Nevertheless, heartily recommended.
A Hottt One...BUT..........2007-08-28
For the record, the X-Men trilogy is among my favorite superhero movie collections. X-Men and X-Men United were dreams come to life...as was X-Men:The Last Stand. However...as a comic book purist,I have to agree with some of the other posts and say that X3 was a bit disappointing. Not that the action wasn't there, not that the suspense and the romance weren't there, definately not that the special fx weren't there...but I wasn't feeling the way major characters got killed off in the end, and even more agitating is the way the film ended in light of the fact that there's supposedly NOT going to be an X4. Questions are left unanswered about Phoenix and the characters she disintegrated and all we're left with is anticipation for the Wolverine spin-off and the rumored Magneto spin-off to the X-Men trilogy. Could've been a lot better.
Utterly, utterly dissapointed.......2007-08-23
I was shocked at how ridiculous this movie was. I loved the 2nd one and thought this would be the icing on the cake, but I was actually left speechless at the end. I could find nothing to say since I was so shocked at how stupid this movie was. It was a garbled mess and felt pointless. I truly was hoping to love it but instead I got the complete opposite.

One of the greatest Westerns ever made gets the deluxe treatment on this superior disc from Republic Home Video's Silver Screen Classics line of special-edition DVDs. Written by Carl Foreman (who was later blacklisted during the anticommunist hearings of the '50s) and superbly directed by Fred Zinnemann, this 1952 classic stars Gary Cooper as just-married lawman Will Kane, who is about to retire as a small-town sheriff and begin a new life with his bride (Grace Kelly) when he learns that gunslinger Frank Miller (Ian MacDonald) is due to arrive at high noon to settle an old score. Kane seeks assistance from deputies and townsfolk, but soon realizes he'll have to stand alone in his showdown with Miller and his henchmen. Innovative for its time, the suspenseful story unfolds in approximate real time (from 10:40 a.m. to high noon in an 84-minute film), and many interpreted Foreman's drama as an allegorical reflection of apathy and passive acceptance of Senator Joseph McCarthy's anticommunist campaign. Political underpinnings aside, this remains a milestone of its genre (often referred to as the first "adult" Western), and Cooper is flawless in his Oscar-winning role. The first-rate DVD gives this landmark film all the respect it deserves, beginning with a digitally remastered transfer from the original film negative. Additional features include the exclusive documentary The Making of High Noon, hosted by film historian Leonard Maltin and featuring interviews with the late Lloyd Bridges (who played Cooper's rival ex-deputy), director Fred Zinnemann, and producer Stanley Kramer. Also included is the original theatrical trailer and a special chapter stop highlighting the Oscar-winning song "Do Not Forsake Me." Offered in English and dubbed French and Spanish, with English closed-captioning or Spanish and French subtitles. --Jeff Shannon

The King and future Princess .......2007-08-23
Gary Cooper was king of western films and Grace Kelly was noticed by the Prince of Monaco enough to be take her as his Princess.
Gary Cooper's Oscar winning performance was well earned for this movie........2007-08-12
Gary Cooper pretty much carries the whole movie as a small town law man who must make one last effort to take down the bad guys in a small town where the people are as cowardly as sheep. By the end of the movie, you feel that Gary Cooper's character was let down by those he thought were his friends and he looks at them coldly as he and his new wife leave.
HIGH NOON, 1 OF HOLLYWOODS GREATEST WESTERNS.......2007-08-09
HIGH NOON, STARRING GRACE KELLY AND GAR COOPER IS A WESTERN CLASSIC THAT LIKE CASABLANCA; WILL REMAIN 1 OF THE ALL TIME GREAT MOVIES OF HOLLYWOOD. THIS REMASTERED COLLECTORS EDITION; IS AS GOOD AS IT WAS; THE FIRST TIME I REMEMBER SEEING IT. ITS 1 OF THOSE WESTERN CLASSICS, YOU WANT TO WATCH OVER AND OVER.
AS GREAT AS MOVIES GET!!!.......2007-08-01
Prior to watching "High Noon", I watched several very good westerns: "The Broken Arrow" and "The Man Who Killed Liberty Valance".
Then comes along "High Noon." All I can say is WOW!
This is not only a great western, it is one of the best movies ever made.
Be sure to watch film historian Leonard Maltin's segment at the end of the film where you will have the privilege of seeing some of the main artists involved in the making of the film talk about it. It is fascinating.
Without Gary Cooper, I don't believe this film could or would have been made. It required an actor who was an ambivert - not totally introverted or he could not have portrayed the role, but not totally extroverted either, or we would not have the nuances of an inner life which shown through Cooper's performance. His was the academy award that year, and it was wholly deserved.
If you haven't seen this film, don't hesitate. I somehow compare it to another great film, "Grand Illusion," also filmed in black and white with a low budget. When the talent, intelligence and integrity are there on the part of every important member of the creative team, these films show us that frills are just what they are: frills.
Don't miss this one and deprive yourself.
A Classic & Inspiring Hero Movie.......2007-07-20
High Noon is truly a classic movie. The story is moving; and of course moves at the rate of "real" time. Gary is superb and subtle playing his charater as moral, firm, sensitive, and when appropriate, kind. Grace is beautiful and ultimately makes a sacrafice and grows as a person and in relationship to the world. I strongly recommend this movie and wish everyone would see it. The soundtrack is also a big winner.

The man behind the books.......2007-09-09
I watched this movie as a TV movie and thought it was perfect for my boyfriend who is a new teacher. The fact that the protagonist had such a strong desire to be a teacher made it more realistic that other teacher movies. My boyfriend had read The Essential 55 and actually uses some of the rules for his classroom and enjoyed seeing them as they were developing. Probably the best inspirational teacher movie out there! It shows more than one student-type in the classroom and its more real than every kid being brilliant but lazy.
Inspirational Education Film.......2007-09-09
My high school teacher wife and I thoroughly enjoyed this film. We accidentally tuned in to it on cable TV. It reminds me a little of the "Stand and Deliver" movie. My wife wanted a copy for our DVD collection.
A story of inspiration........2007-09-03
This is a story of a teacher who changes his students lives. He provides them with the love and discipline they need to excel. Ron Clark is not only an inspirational teacher but an inspirational human being. You will love this movie.
Hollywood must've hokeyed it up!.......2007-09-02
I've seen all the famous teacher movies, so I had a little trouble believing this was a true story. All the cliches were there: loses his temper like Thackery in To Sir With Love, ruins his health like in Stand and Deliver, colleagues are burnt out - like every teacher movie. As a teacher for 20 years in the inner city, I can tell you it was terribly simplified. I haven't read his book - it's got to be better than the movie.
Okay, I have to admit I don't like Matthew Perry, so that did color my view too.
A true story of an inspiring teacher!.......2007-07-29
The Ron Clark Story is stark, dramatic, true, and inspiring! As a volunteer with teenagers, I bought the DVD because I had seen the movie some years ago.
It is an excellent portrait of a teacher who was tested to the utmost extreme in order to help the teens in a truly poor school to achieve far beyond their own and their parents' dreams.
His success and theirs is dramatically shown, and is an inspiration for any who are lucky enough to see it.
You will not regret buying it.

Harland Williams: What a Treat
ASIN: B000CEPE5A
Release Date: 2007-04-17 |
Product Description
Blast off for outrageously funny space travel in this screwball comedy that spins wildly out of control all the way to Mars! Though he's a whiz with computers, accident-prone astro-nut Fred Randall (comedian Harland Williams - "Dumb And Dumber") is the last guy on Earth you'd want on the first manned mission to Mars. But as bad luck and poor timing would have it, that's exactly what happens and Fred undergoes rigorous, if not hilarious, training at NASA. After that, it's t-minus a reality check as Fred blasts off with the rest of the space shuttle crew: a cocky, non-nonsense Commander, a sexy Mission Specialist and a mischievous space chimp named Ulysses. From the dizzying preflight foolishness to the even loonier landing, Rocketman is the out-of-this-world hit comedy that's more than go for launch, it's go for laughs!

Entertaining.......2007-09-08
This movie is corny. Several times I almost turned it off at the beginning, but gave it a chance and in the end found it entertaining. Sometimes it is so silly, it becomes funny. We have watched it several times now and shared it with family and friends. Everyone has been entertained by it. The film has some crude humor, which didn't bother us, but might bother others. Otherwise, it is appropriate for family, however, I didn't like the first scene where it shows a child inside a dryer, pretending to the an astronaut and the dryer starts revolving. I really don't want my grandchildren immulating this.
It wasn't me, It was Julie.......2007-09-06
Rocketman is a very funny film. I am shocked that it doesn't have a cult following. The movie is clean and funny. I have found that boys and young at heart males are the preferred audience. I have watched it 4 or 5 times and have enjoyed it every time. I think that if you like the Stooges or I Love Lucy or Ace Ventura, you will love this movie although; I must warn you that it is not for everyone.
Rocketman review.......2007-09-04
An under-rated classic comedy. Best original comedy since Airplane. Non-stop antics that you can't leave the room for, or you'll miss a couple.
Laugh out loud.......2007-08-30
This guy is a riot. silly comedy that sticks in your head and comes back days later. I have five kids. Farts ARE funny. End of story.
Love the move. Makes me totally laugh. My kids too.

Great movie, mediocre release.......2007-07-24
I remember seeing this movie when it aired on Disney channel oh so long ago, so when I saw it for $6.50 at Best Buy, I just couldn't resist.
While the movie itself is still hilarious, you can easily tell that it isn't a recent movie, what with some innuendo, racial comments, and scenes that would most likely foster a rating greater than PG nowadays. The most memorable scene for most viewers will probably be the series of tests main character Fred takes to see if he's got what it takes to be part of NASA's mission to Mars. And while the humor after that sequence of scenes isn't nearly as funny, it's still a great watch overall. Then again, that could be the nostalgia talking.
As for the DVD itself, it's not exactly the best. For one, you can't skip to different scenes, which is a real drag if you want to skip to certain scenes. Chapter selections are just something that even the most basic of DVDs should have, so it's strange to only see a play option on the main menu. You'll also notice if you check the back of the box that the movie was originally in widescreen, so it's another minus to have to watch the movie, knowing that it's not in the original aspect ratio.
But all in all, this was a great purchase, especially since this movie practically never airs on TV now. And I'm not exactly surprised that the movie lacks a widescreen and chapter selection option, considering how cheap I got it for. Sure I would have liked them in there, but this release will do for now.

Some called it a snooze-fest, while others tearfully clutched their Kleenex. In any case, Clint Eastwood was an unusual and (as it turned out) perceptive choice to direct and costar in this lush adaptation of Robert James Waller's phenomenally bestselling novel. Meryl Streep costars as Francesca, the lonely Iowa farmer's wife who is instantly attracted to Robert (Eastwood), the photographer from National Geographic who is in the area to photograph the bridges along Iowa's rural roadways. The two fall in love while Francesca's husband and children are away at a county fair, but the story's passion and lasting appeal derive from their decision to part forever after just a few brief days of intimate connection. Superbly acted with an emphasis on quiet, graceful moments of tender revelation, the film builds to a crescendo of powerful and conflicting emotions. Like David Lean's Brief Encounter (to which it bears marked similarities), The Bridges of Madison County is destined to become one of the classic movie love stories. --Jeff Shannon
Customer Reviews:
Wonderful love story.......2007-09-09
When I went to see this movie in the theatre years ago, I was so sure that I wasn't going to like this film. There was a loud rumbling in the romance community about this story being written by a man. At the time there were a lot of them. This one, Message in a Bottle and a Walk to Remember shortly after. So there I was in all my huffy glory, glaring at the screen. But all that nonesense was forgotten as this wonderful story started to unfold. Clint Eastwood and Meryl Streep had me smiling and melting in this forbidden love story in no time flat. By the time we reach the scene where Eastwood is standing in the middle of the street during a rain down pour, I was begging her to get out the car. Run, girl. Run to your true soul mate! Ah, amour. So despite my prejudices I fell helplessly in love with this story--and you will too. Highly recommended.
BRIDGES OF MADISON COUNTY.......2007-08-28
I own all of Eastwood movies.Including..Rawhide series. All his motion pictures are widescreen...all! What about'.....Madison County?Who in the world didn't stop to think..this too should be in widescreen..to get the whole pictureSCOPE of this great Romatic future classic.I do have it also on Laser Disc.& it's in widescreen.I just run a print to a blank dvd for now.
Come on you people who sell these movies..if nothing else...put both versions on dvd. They do that you know?
Loved This Movie ,Made Me Cry.......2007-08-25
I wasn't sure I would like this movie since I had already read the book and fell in love with this story.
I'll have to admit Clint Eastwood & Merle Streep did a beautiful job. There were parts that were left out of course but all in all a very good movie, still the book was much better and left me wanting more.
Too bad there cannot be a sequel since both characters are now deceased.
The only part I did not like was the beginning where her children found the story of her love story. I hated the actions of the son or maybe it was the actor.
Crud story, glorifying adultery - disgusting trash.......2007-08-15
This movie makes me sick. Basically it's a movie about a woman who betrays her marriage vows, betrays her husband, betrays her children. It's a movie about a man that commits sin by persuing a sexual relationship with a married woman. The first time I watched this movie (and the last) I found myself hoping the husband would come home and catch the two in the act. He would have been justified in kicking the snot out the filthy no good womanizer. There's no repentance for sin in this movie, no confession of guilt. Heck, for all we know the wicked man gave the married woman a mean case of the herps and then moved on to the next town where he did it all over again (that's the way these people are) How many marriages have been wrecked by this type of thing? And they throw it up on the big screen and package it as a love story? No, it's not a love story. It's a story of human depravity at its worst. If this movie had been advertised as such, I would give it 5 stars for it displays wickedness of unrepentant human hearts in grand fashion. But since this movie tries to pass itself off as a romantic interlude between two lonely adults.. uh uh. It's just horrible, new age agenda laden, anti-christian schlock. Avoid it unless you enjoy throwing up in disgust.
It only takes one love to complete the journey ..........2007-07-22
This review is dedicated to the boy who once slugged his subject line "To the girl who wisely wouldn't date me in the `60s." A road less traveled out of fear for the unknown can seem like your downfall. But, harbor no regrets. In fact there are paths we take to help fill the void. As trite as this may sound, one of those paths can be a great movie. "The Bridges of Madison County" has become both a life-saving tool (a bit dramatic) and an obsession for me. The DVD places its two main characters, brilliantly acted out by Clint Eastwood and Meryl Streep, into a state of infinite thoughts that transcend all boundaries. In his novel, Robert James Waller poignantly describes the fuse used to shape a lifetime of bliss in just four days, scenes the DVD expertly portrays and brings to life. Directed by Clint Eastwood, this epic tale is a much-needed time warp to a better place through the eyes of Francesca Johnson and Robert Kincaid, who share a passion for common ground that only comes along once.
