If this five-disc, 20-episode, tenth season set really is the end of Stargate SG-1--and considering the number of reprieves the show has already had and the rumors of various movie spin-offs, not to mention the fact that the final installment is entitled "Unending," who knows?--then the folks responsible for this durable sci-fi series can be proud that they finished it off in style, with a run of episodes that are for the most part highly entertaining, exciting, and fun, offering resolution if not complete closure. And if sharks were jumped, at least they were small ones. As was the case in Season 9, and to a large extent in Season 8 as well, original series star Richard Dean Anderson is little in evidence here. Portraying Lt. Col. Cameron Mitchell, Ben Browder, who came to Stargate SG-1 from the underrated Farscape, is now entrenched as leader of SG-1, the Stargate project's ace team in the field, joining series veterans Amanda Tapping, Christopher Judge, and Michael Shanks (as Samantha Carter, Teal'c, and Daniel Jackson, respectively). Most notably, fellow Farscape alum Claudia Black has an ever-expanding role as Vala, whose cheeky wit and irreverence bring a consistent spark to the proceedings. The big, bad villains known as Ori are back as well. We still can't see them--they are, after all, "ascended beings," represented by the blind, monk-like Priors, who roam the universe intoning "Hallowed are the Ori" and ensuring that all will submit to their will (the element of scary religious fanaticism remains as relevant as ever). But the Ori are also still the most implacable, irresistible force our heroes have ever encountered; nothing less than the fate of the entire galaxy is at stake (again)! And now there's an added twist: the Ori have a frontwoman, if you will, whose powers make the Priors look like pikers. Known as Adria (or "the Orici" to believers), this beautiful young woman (played by Morena Baccarin) also happens to be the daughter of Vala, whom the Ori chose to bring their demon seed into the world; the uneasy (to say the least) Adria-Vala relationship provides many intriguing moments. On the minus side, the show tends to break its own rules (for instance, for a character who's supposed to be invincible, Adria often seems awfully, well, vincible), and the commingling of Arthurian legend, Greek, Roman, and Egyptian myth, magic, and other sources is occasionally over-the-top, even for this franchise. Some episodes are plot-heavy, bogged down by too many characters (past bad guys like the Goa'uld, and Ba'al reappear, as do several Stargate Atlantis principals in one episode) or excessive techno-rap about time dilation fields, flux capacitors, and something called the Clava Thessara Infinitas (don't ask). Episodes in which the writers move away from the central Ori theme are less than stellar; "200" exists mostly as an opportunity to make fun of the TV business and is as irrelevant and silly as "Citizen Joe," the worst episode from Season 8. And finally, without revealing details, suffice to say that "Unending," which offers a possible fate for our heroes before totally pulling its punches, may frustrate some longtime adherents. By and large, though, Stargate SG-1 has all the elements--humor, action, great effects, good story-telling and acting, characters you care about--to more than justify its ten-year run. It will be missed. Special features are again bountiful, including audio commentary on all episodes, various featurettes, and five "directors series" entries devoted to particular episodes. --Sam Graham

1 word...Fantastic!!! I hated to see the series end, but anxiously await the movies to be released.

5 out of 5 stars Final Season of a great Series!.......2007-09-12

Stargate SG-1 was a great and original sci-fi series. The combination of great writing, quality special effects, and an unusually well-balanced cast playing beleivable characters you cared about, made it truely unique. Season Ten did a good job, I think, given the cast and bad guy changes along the way, in concluding the series. In one way, it left you feeling that the end was ready to happen, and in another way, you wanted some more - and it gave one both. Well done!

Awesomew Awesome Awesome,,,,Love it, Love StarGate SG1, will miss it immensley. One of the best SciFi's out there, had believable things going on .It's great
at least we will have the movies & Amanda Tapping in Atlantis..

5 out of 5 stars The end...but not quite.......2007-09-11

Yeah, as so many others have said, a great series. While not as "hard" as Babylon 5, and not as gritty as Battlestar Galactica, it did not take itself too seriously, had some *great* fun moments (a few purposefully campy), and told a good story arc all at the same time. Even my gf was hooked by this series (whereas she doesn't share my love for B5 or BSG). Yes, it's a shame it had to end (my gf is pretty unhappy about that!), but really, 10 years is a good run. And the story doesn't end with this DVD collection, as most SG-1 fans know. There are coming two follow-up movies that will wrap up the Ori story arc before SG-1's time is done. Then the stage will be open for other teams to tell their stories (if the producers opt to pursue this, that is).

5 out of 5 stars Stargate SG-1.......2007-09-09

Always buy this series, and am sorry that it is, as a weekly show, ending. Therefore it is good to be able to have the last season (I have all the others) as it is one of the best in the field - science fiction - apart from old faithful Star Trek. Always miss Richard Dean Anderson, that wry and handsome wit, but Shanks and Browder, let alone Claudia Black, what a terrific actor! more than make up for his loss. I always wish more of Amanda Tapping's abilities apart from sheer mathematics that she is forced by plot to come out with at least four or five times per episode could be utilized in more interesting directions, but she is the greatest also. Look forward to her in Stargate Atlantis.
Stargate SG-1 season 10 is a worthy product and has been added to my collection with great satisfaction.

5 out of 5 stars season 3 of Stargate Atlantis.......2007-07-29

This was a Excellent season as always, very good jobs on all parts i thought they really brought out a lot of the characters like they said , even Joe Flanigan's character John Sheppard , but only problem i have is with the cover art for the box set , it just looks so ugly i can't believe they are using it wow, anyway they are suppose to be a production company better then regular people and this what they give us it looks horrible they first one was just fine

4 out of 5 stars Neat special effects.......2007-07-23

This season we saw the Atlanteans return, more spaceships, more replicators, and finally the station blasting into space. I'm a bit tired of Tayla's culture--most of the Jaffa centered episodes in the other series were rather weak. But Atlantis has some potential left (though I'd like to tackle the ascension angle a bit more--these wraiths don't have quite enough dimension to them).

5 out of 5 stars Gets Better and Better.......2007-07-22

I just loved this series and I'm very glad they are releasing it on DVD so soon! season 2 took forever to come on DVD.

I have to say that Stargate Atlantis is a wonderful show, darker and yet funnier than SG1 I guess the writers got to get better at their job while working on SG1 and the now 3 seasons of Atlantis.
If you watch the show, this is a most, and if you are just starting well now you have 60 episodes available to watch without having to wait.
Love all the characters can't wait for season 4 to begin!

3 out of 5 stars Good at times but overall fails to realize its potential.......2007-07-08

Warning! There are multiple spoilers in the following review!

I've watched STARGATE ATLANTIS from the beginning and have more or less enjoyed it from the start. I definitely plan on continuing to watch it, but I have some concerns about the show that I'm convinced have to be addressed for it to continue to be worth watching.

First and foremost, ATLANTIS has always had and continues to have serious cast problems. They have now had three complete seasons to address these problems and while they have played with it some, most of their decisions have been odd at best. I really like Joe Flannigan as Sheppard and David Hewlett as Rodney, but beyond that the cast is mainly made up of liabilities. There was one other actor I liked a lot on the show, Paul McGillion as Beckett, but inexplicably in remaking the cast they chose to kill off one of the few strong characters on the show. Rachel Luttrell as Teyla is more baffling. Her character has never been very interesting, but I'm not convinced that Luttrell is untalented. I suspect that for whatever reason the writers have simply not been willing or able to come up with any interesting arcs for her (apart from having an interesting connection to the wraiths, which by and large has been underutilized). My hope is that they will rethink Teyla and either do both her and us a favor and kill her off, or become more aggressive in writing her character and give her some significant arcs and character development. Jason Momoa as Ronon, however, is probably a lost cause. He is perhaps the most wooden actor on television today and they have done virtually nothing of interest with his character. David Nykl, however, is good as Zelenka. I always enjoy his scenes with Rodney. Finally, I really want to like Torri Higginson (not least because she bears a scary resemblance to an ex-girlfriend of mine). I love shows that feature strong and interesting female characters, but after three years she remains yet another character with whom they've been unable to do very much. In her case, however, it appears that the producers have decided to either write her out of the show entirely or reduce her merely to a recurring character. I will continue to watch and sometimes enjoy STARGATE ATLANTIS, but they really need to do some serious rehabilitation.

Some help is on the way. We know that Amanda Tapping and her character Samantha Carter will be moving over from the cancelled STARGATE SG-1 to become the new head of the Atlantis project. I think she will bring more strength to the role than Torri Higginson did. Normally I would also applaud the casting of Jewel Staite as the new base doctor. I loved her on FIREFLY as Kaylee, but I still regret Beckett's leaving the show. But I honestly feel that the cast needs several more major changes. The show has had to rely far too heavily on Sheppard and Rodney.

The end of Season Three did, however, leave hope for new and better things. Atlantis has emerged as the name not of a location that cannot be moved, but of a truly mobile city that can relocate . . . well, to anywhere. The season ends with the city blasting off into space. I'm anxious to see what happens next. But whatever they do, I would like to see the show continue the risks it started taking in Season Three. Killing Beckett was an abominable mistake (especially given that there were some other characters who could have been killed with far greater profit to the show), but it at least started giving the show something that both it and SG-1 have always lacked: a body count. The good adventure shows have body counts. SG-1 had next to none. The only truly heartbreaking death in ten seasons was when Dr. Frasier was killed. It is no accident that that the episode in which that occurred was one of the finest in the series' run. If you don't have a body count, you get no sense of danger. On shows like BUFFY, LOST, and BATTLESTAR GALACTIC they have killed off some important characters. As a result when a character is in danger you get a degree of danger that you never, ever get on ATLANTIS or SG-1. Well, at least until they killed off Beckett and at least seriously injured Weir. I dearly hope they continue doing this in the future.

I also hope that we see Season Four taking the stories of the Wraith and the replicators to newer and more complex levels. The series has had some great moments over the first three seasons, especially when they let situations get really desperate. Hopefully they will continue to do this.

While Season Three frequently left me wanting more due to the weaknesses in the overall cast, there were some great moments. The season finale (both SG-1 and ATLANTIS have had some fine season enders) was splendid. And the season featured what may be my favorite episode of the entire series so far in "Common Ground," in which the Genii kidnap Sheppard and enclose him with a wraith who is allowed to feed on no one else. Christopher Heyerdahl has played several wraiths on the series, but in this episode he was allowed to give this particular wraith a dignity and complexity not allowed any other wraith with the exception of Michael. He gradually drains the life out of Sheppard out of sheer necessity before the two of them, cooperating as human and wraith never have before, manage to escape from the Genii. Then, in a moment that could lead to interesting plot developments in the future, we discover that the wraiths cannot only drain another creature of life, they can also imbue them with it, and as a sign of comradeship he heals Sheppard. I want arcs like this one! On a host of other series some of the most interesting characters have been those who came over from the other side. On STAR TREK: VOYAGER, we had Seven of Nine; on BUFFY we had Angel, Anya, and Spike; currently on BATTLESTAR GALACTICA we have Sharon Agathon and (possibly) Caprica Six; and on SG-1 we had Teal'c. I think it would be fascinating if they could do something like that with a wraith.

So I wait for the beginning of Season Four with some nervousness. The show has some weaknesses and problems, but they are fixable. The series has not lost any of its potential. But until we see how the new city in the air Atlantis works in terms of story and how the new cast changes affect the chemistry we won't know for sure. One thing is for certain. Season Four should bear little resemblance to any of the first three seasons.

4 out of 5 stars Definate Improvement Over Season 2 & Possibilities For An Even Better Season 4!.......2007-06-28

Season 3 was a definate improvement over season 2. There are a number of different reasons for this; *WARNING*: Some Spoilers ahead!

First off, more interesting stories with both gains and losses! They fleshed out a few of the characters a bit more like Ronan and Rodney, but again left Teyla out in the cold! I thought her character was pretty good in the first season, but around the middle of season 2 through the end of 3, I completely lost interest in her. She basically just stands around as a little eye candy; when she is even in a scene! Lately she has come across as somewhat condesending with a "holier-than-thou" attitude. If they killed her off, I wouldn't miss her! (I read somewhere that she is pregnant, so the writers are putting that in some of the 4th season episodes, meaning less screen time! The rumor also hinted that she will rejoin "what is left of her people", and leave SGA!)

This also brings up characters that ARE lost, and others we will gain. The first character we lost was Dr. Carlson Beckett in the episode "Sunday"! A very sad episode! I really liked his character. He was a really nice, cool and calm guy, providing a moral center like Daniel Jackson did for SG-1, which was a perfect "yin" to Rodney McKay's hypertensive, egocentric and often rude "yang". Replacing him will be Jewel Staite as Dr. Jennifer Keller (best known from Firefly). She looks more grown-up, adult-like on SG Atlantis than her more kid-like character did from Firefly. (Which is good if she is to be taken seriously) And as always, she is definately still a hottie!

Another character will be Dr. Elizabeth Weir. Her role has been slowly spiraling downwards in season 3, so much like Teyla, I won't really miss her! Although her fate was undecided at the end of this season, she is going to die in season 4 and will be replaced with an SG-1 veteran, Col. Samantha Carter! She will become the new Atlantis commander and should replace Carson as a spring board for Rodney. With their past chemistry it will be like mixing acids and bases, getting quite a volatile reaction at first, but neutralizing in the end. Sheppard and her should also butt heads a lot as she will out-rank him militarily.

Lastly, I've also read some of the previous reviews and would have to disagree with some of their comments. First off, Rodney McKay is HILARIOUS! His character's annoying, smug attitude is what makes him so funny! Especially with the different reactions the other characters give Rodney when interacting with him! (Ex.'s: Sheppard and Ronon threaten him when he gets annoying; Carson (use to) patronize him even though Rodney didn't realize it, etc.) One thing I didn't like about this season was how the Wraith were practically non-existent! Instead they replaced them with the Replicators! These done-to-death bad guys are really starting to get old since they've been used so much in SG-1. I think the only good point of having them on Atlantis was learning more about their origins. They need to bring the Wraith back since they are the pre-dominant bad guys for Atlantis and need to delve deeper into their culture, weaknesses, etc.

Whatever your opinion on the 3rd season of Atlantis, most people will agree it has gotten better since season 2. And with all the quick changes at the end of the 3rd like 2 major characters dying/replaced and Atlantis itself heading off to a new planet to put down new roots, it gives potential for an awesome season 4! Lets just hope they don't screw it up!

If Stargate Atlantis isn't the coolest sci-fi series on television, this five-disc, 20-episode box set from the second season (2005-06) offers ample evidence that it's right up there. The writing is good; the stories are intriguing, and the science part of the equation is credible enough to justify our suspension of disbelief. The characters are for the most part well-defined, and the acting, while perhaps not Emmy-caliber, is just fine. The action is exciting, the effects work impressive, the costumes and sets first-rate. But what Atlantis really has going for it is the presence of some of the baddest bad guys in the cosmos: the Wraith.

With their flowing white locks, cat-like eyes, pale, almost translucent skin, and teeth so bad they'd make the British blush, the Wraith rock. They also have a constant need to feed--on humans, of course--and are a serious threat not only to Atlantis but to the entire known universe, including good ol' Earth. And although there are occasional diversions, the producers and writers have wisely kept the focus on these implacable antagonists; in fact, the newest member of the team, one Ronon Dex (played by the dreadlocked and hunky Jason Momoa), is a "runner" who escaped the Wraith's clutches, was a fugitive for years before being found by our heroes, and specializes in dispatching the villains with cold precision. In the course of the season, via single episodes and several multi-parters, the Stargate team, commanded by Dr. Elizabeth Weir (Torri Higginson in the show's least interesting role) and led by insouciant Major John Sheppard (Joe Flanigan), with genius-neurotic Dr. Rodney McKay (David Hewlett) handling the scientific intricacies and yet another doc, Carson Beckett (Paul McGillion, affecting a Scottish brogue), overseeing medical matters, deals with the enemy on many fronts. Lt. Ford (Rainbow Sun Francks) defects after assuming Wraith-like characteristics. The team experiments with a "retrovirus" designed to turn Wraiths into humans (the results are decidedly mixed). They encounter a human who raised a Wraith female from childhood and insists she's just like us (she's not). They're captured and imprisoned on a Wraith "hive" ship. And in the final episode, the humans and the Wraiths even form an alliance of supposedly mutual convenience (the episode is a cliffhanger that awaits resolution until Season Three, but anyone who thought this "partnership" was a good idea for our side clearly hasn't been paying attention). As was the case with the Season One set, bonus materials are generous, including audio commentary (by actors, directors, and others) on every episode, various featurettes, photos, and more. Now if only there were a few Wraith interviews... --Sam Graham

Stargate SG-1 soldiers on with this five-disc, 20-episode set from the sturdy franchise's ninth season (2005-06), incorporating numerous changes while continuing to distinguish itself as one of the television's best sci-fi shows. Longtime star Richard Dean Anderson makes only brief cameos these days, after seven seasons as Lieutenant Colonel and one as Brigadier General Jack O'Neill. Stalwarts Amanda Tapping, Christopher Judge, and Michael Shanks (as Samantha Carter, Teal'c, and Daniel Jackson, respectively), are still on hand, but with Season 9, Ben Browder (known to many genre fans for his lead role in the excellent Farscape series) takes over as leader of SG-1, the Stargate project's ace team in the field. As Lt. Col. Cameron Mitchell, Browder effectively projects the same kind of cocky irreverence that was Anderson's trademark, but he has a ways to go before he fully equals the latter's appeal. More engaging is fellow Farscape alum Claudia Black as Vala (Daniel Jackson's one-time love interest and a vixen, thief, and liar who becomes an integral part of the team during the several episodes in which she appears), while Beau Bridges is capable but uninspiring as Major General Hank Landry, who runs the show back on Earth.

Then there are the bad guys. With longtime nemeses the Goa'uld having essentially been eliminated, we now have the Ori, whose agenda of domination through religion provides the season's principal story arc. They're certainly a timely addition. With their "Book of Origin," rejection of free will, and goal of subduing all heretics and "unbelievers," the Ori resemble extreme fundamentalists of various stripes; on the other hand, when the U.S. military talks about crusades and "ridding the galaxy of evildoers," parallels to the Bush administration's war on terror are obvious and unavoidable. Problem is, while we know that the Ori are relentless, devious, and bloated with the pride that always attaches itself to false gods, we can't actually see them. They have semi-human apostles, called Priors, who spread "enlightenment" and bad mojo (not to mention plagues of carnivorous bugs) all over the universe. They have mighty ships that that leave the good guys in dire straits in the climactic battle that ends the season (typically, little is resolved, leaving viewers to salivate for Season 10). But the Ori themselves are kin to the all-knowing Ancients, who exist not in recognizable physical form but as energy; unlike previous villains, from the Goa'uld to the Replicators to Stargate Atlantis' Wraith, when it comes to the Ori, there's no there there. Meanwhile, the writers' replacement of the ancient Egyptian iconography used in earlier seasons with various aspects of Arthurian legend (Merlin, Knights of the Round Table, sword in the stone) is sometimes cool, sometimes merely hokey.

As always, Stargate SG-1's production values and effects remain first-rate, even as the stories become more character-driven and less dependent on spectacular action sequences. The DVD transfers are excellent. Special features are similar to previous box sets: audio commentary on all episodes, featurettes focusing on sets, props, and special effects, and five "directors series" entries devoted to particular episodes. --Sam Graham

5 out of 5 stars An Addiction Waiting to Happen.......2007-08-24

Stargate SG-1 Season 9 Boxed Set is an addiction waiting to happen. Each episode builds on the last. It is very difficult to want to put it away after you've finished each episode and even worse after each disk. Beware! If you don't have the time, you may have to hide the rest of the box to get through your day! Every episode is enjoyable and a joy! Ben Browder and Claudia Black are a great addition to an already great team!

We have been waiting for this season in Oz for ages and it was well worth the wait.

5 out of 5 stars remade better.......2007-08-07

I was following SG-1 on and off since around its 2nd season. It became close to unwatchable in its middle run, probably because the formula got old and some of my personal annoyances got really annoying and the writing overall became less interesting (or stale).

Looking back, I practically couldn't stand the character of Daniel Jackson, and Jack O'Neal with his awkward sleep-inducing comedic timing (RD Anderson, pretending to be an actor). Those two obstacles are gone in season 9, since O'Neal is rarely seen anymore.... And Daniel Jackson finally got some spank after being banned from his ascension paradise (and then i understood that it's not the actor, Michael Shanks, i was hating but the character he played!), ditched his nerdy ways, grabbed a gun, but retained his knowledge, and gained a new, more... sarcastic(?) attitude.

Next excellent move, dethroning Goauld as chief bad guys in favor of possibly the most spooky sci-fi villains on TV so far in this millenium and undeniably the coolest (yes, even spookier than Cylons, even tho' BSG is a better show overall). The Ori and their so-called Priors.
However, I got to point out how wonderfully the goauld lord Baal is portrayed in this season and also the next one, menacing and genuinely scary but at the same time amusingly funny.

Final, and the best change was recruiting two actual actors with great charisma (Claudia Black, Ben Browder) taken from a series akin to a cross between muppet show and sesame street, aka Farscape, and one veteran actor which complements the REVIVED SG-1 nicely, Beau Bridges. Shame that so late, tho.
They bring a lost (or never existing before?) humor and kinetics to the series and fine dramatic acting, too.

Seems like writing got better and bolder a notch or two, as well.

3 out of 5 stars Stargate SG-1 Season #9 -not in HD HOW SAD.......2007-08-06

Was disapointed that SG-1, seasons 9 & 10 were not mastered in HD like the first eight seasons. I hope that something is done to make this right. I hate having the last two seasons different than the first eight.
I'd buy them and upgrade my collection if they were done in HD.

It's not a franchise on the order of Law & Order, CSI, or Star Trek--not yet, anyway--but with Stargate Atlantis, a more than worthy successor to SG-1, Stargate is becoming a nice little cottage industry in itself. The premise, in a nutshell: The Ancients, the greatest race the universe has ever known (or something like that), abandoned Earth millions of years ago, taking Atlantis with them; they then sunk the entire city in order to escape the clutches of the dreaded Wraith, an implacable bunch of villains who nourish themselves by sucking the life from humans. Now, as the two-hour "Rising" pilot details, a new team has gained access to the legendary city. Once they arrive, Atlantis loses the power to sustain its protective shield and rises to the surface, and thus begin the team's adventures (i.e., using the stargate to travel to other planets in the Pegasus galaxy, encountering aliens both hostile and friendly, and trying to defeat the Wraith, or at least stay out of their way).

Jack O'Neill (Richard Dean Anderson), SG-1's driving force, is missed, but Atlantis has a strong replacement in Major John Sheppard (Joe Flanigan), easily the most charismatic member of the new team. Like O'Neill, Sheppard is a wiseacre and a loose cannon, as well as a superb pilot with an innate understanding of the Ancients' arcane technology. His humor, humanity and conscience provide a welcome contrast to the other characters, especially brilliant-but-neurotic Dr. Rodney McKay (David Hewlett) and ultra-serious project leader Dr. Elizabeth Weir (Torri Higginson), who has little to do but give orders and stand up for her people. The Wraith, who resemble a vampire mutation of the albino blues guitarist Johnny Winter, are the focus of most of these 19 episodes (including the pilot). These bad boys will stop at nothing--nothing, I tell you!--in their quest to snack their way through every galaxy in the universe, with Earth their ultimate feeding ground. And while the final four episodes, dealing with the Wraith's massive attack on Atlantis, end with an unsatisfying cliffhanger (basically, nothing is resolved), earlier shows effectively keep their ominous presence in the forefront. The episodes in which the Wraith play little or no active role are often compelling as well, including "Thirty Eight Minutes" (one of our heroes' "puddle jumper" spacecraft gets stuck in the stargate), "Childhood's End" (we meet a race whose members are convinced that only ritual suicide is keeping the Wraith at bay), and "The Eye" (a planet-size hurricane/tsunami bears down on Atlantis). As is the case with SG-1, the visual effects work, especially by TV standards, is excellent; in fact, one might wish for bit more cool sci-fi action and less talk in some of the episodes. Special effects include commentary (by directors, writers, and/or actors) for every episode, as well as the occasional behind-the-scenes featurette. --Sam Graham

Description

When a secret base, abandoned by the original builders of the Stargates, is found buried in the ice of Antartica, the newly formed Stargate Atlantis team is born. The team's discovery leads to a daring expeditiion to the distant Pegasus galaxy, where they encounter a primitive human civilization and a sinister new enemy that threatens human life everywhere. The Stargate Atlantis mission is headed by Dr. Elizabeth Weir, a specialist in diplomatic relations. Her political savvy is balanced by the bravado of her military counterpart, Major John Sheppard, a courageous pilot. Rounding out the crew are Lt. Aiden Ford, Sheppard's second-in-command, Dr. Rodney McKay, a clever and quick-witted astrophysicist and Teyla, a beautiful young leader among the primitive alien civilization that the Atlantis team encounters.

Even if you have already seen all the episodes, this dvd has enough extras to make the purchase more than worth while. There are actor profiles, making of extras, and some of the funniest commentaries I have ever heard.

5 out of 5 stars best season so far.......2007-06-02

Stargate: Atlantis is an excellent and entertaining show that really stands above its parent show (Stargate: SG-1). This spin off not only has beautiful locations and solid writing, but a solid cast of characters. You really come to love each of them and episodes are dedicated into exploring their real issues and trials. This first season is my favorite (barely beating out the 3rd) because of some of the Rodney McKay centered episodes. All of the interactions between McKay and Sheppard are immensely entertaining. Nerd references and fun abound in this kick-off season.

5 out of 5 stars Stargate Atlantis The Complete First Season.......2007-03-17

For those Stargate fans, Stargate Atlantis is a must have! The have found the lost city of Atlantis in the Pegasus Galaxy and instead of meeting the Ancients, the gate builder, the awaken the Wraith. A vampire like creator that can suck the life right out of you. In their exporation of the Pegasus Galaxy they make friends as well as enemies. They also have cool spaceships, puddle jumpers, left buy the Ancients to help in their exploration.

4 out of 5 stars It's Stargate Atlantis........2007-03-15

I'm impressed with the series. I've always been a big Stargate SG1 fan, and I feel this is a very good split from the oringinal series. I especially love the character interaction between McKay and Sheppard.

The only thing I'm not impressed with is the DVD authoring. The bit-rate encoding shows rendering errors across a broad spectrum of color. (Think dithering on a 16-bit display attempting to show a 32-bit color scheme)

It's noticable on my television as well if I look for it, but the only time I really see it is on my computer using NVDVD. Then again, I'm only a few inches away from my LCD. So the difference makes sense.

Either way, this is a very impressive series and no Stargate fan will be disappointed.

The beat goes on for Stargate SG-1 in this five-disc set containing all 20 episodes from the show's eighth season. If that beat is now a bit more faint than in previous years, that's not particularly surprising when a franchise has been around this long; what's more, if Season 8 has some fairly odd aspects to it ("Threads," which appears to have been planned as the final episode of the entire series, is followed by two more in this set alone… not to mention an unexpected renewal that led to an all-new Season 9), that too isn't exactly unusual in the wacky world of series television.

Some significant changes are apparent in Season 8. Jack O'Neill (series star Richard Dean Anderson) has been promoted to Brigadier General and is now top dog (as he puts it, the guy who "spent my whole life stickin' it to the man" now is the man). The existence of the stargate, an artificially created "wormhole" through which one can instantly travel to different worlds light years away from Earth, is no longer a well-guarded secret. And Stargate Command itself now exists primarily to "develop new weapons and technologies to defend the planet" from our various alien antagonists--principally the "Replicators," relentless little bug-machines poised to take over not only Earth but the entire galaxy.

The rest of the SG-1 core cast (Amanda Tapping, Christopher Judge, and Michael Shanks) is intact. But whereas Anderson, who has steadily reduced his role in the show, wasn't much missed in Season 7, one wishes there were more of him this time around; O'Neill's general insouciance and aversion to techno-speak are a welcome antidote to the kind of sci-fi gobbledygook (discussions about "a time dilation field on the planet Hala" and such) that now threatens to take precedence over the action and fine special effects that distinguished earlier seasons. Most of all, while there are still all manner of villains (Anubis, Ba'al, the ever-present Goa'uld) to contend with, as well as a few good guys (the Asgard, the rebel Jaffa) to help our heroes fight the good fight, Stargate SG-1's writers and creators may be running out of steam. Hence we get an episode like the very peculiar "Citizen Joe," featuring Dan Castellaneta as an average guy who sees "visions" (i.e., clips from past episodes) of the SG-1 team in action and becomes obsessed with proving that the whole stargate project really exists; an uneasy combination of self-parody and self-congratulation, this episode, while not unamusing, sticks out like a sore thumb.

Bonus features include audio commentary (mostly by the various directors) on 19 of the 20 episodes, along with photo galleries and one featurette per disc. --Sam Graham

3 out of 5 stars They've lost Their Zing!.......2007-06-08

While all of the Star Gate episodes still feature the original cast with the exception of General Hammond who makes limited appearances, but has been re-assigned, the show seems to have lost some of its zip. Most of the episodes take place on earth, while the ones that are off world are lacking the humor that Jack would have had. Jack is now head of Star Gate Command and rarely goes through the gate. However, I would recommend buying season eight if only as a means to begin to get some closure with the team.

Before they unleashed the idiotic mayhem of Independence Day and Godzilla, the idea-stealing team of director Roland Emmerich and producer-screenwriter Dean Devlin concocted this hokey hit about the discovery of an ancient portal capable of zipping travelers to "the other side of the known universe." James Spader plays the Egyptologist who successfully translates the Stargate's hieroglyphic code, and then joins a hawkish military unit (led by Kurt Russell) on a reconnaissance mission to see what's on the other side. They arrive on a desert world with cultural (and apparently supernatural) ties to Earth's ancient Egypt, where the sun god Ra (played by Jaye Davidson from The Crying Game) rules a population of slaves with armored minions and startlingly advanced technology. After being warmly welcomed into the slave camp, the earthlings encourage and support a rebellion, and while Russell threatens to blow up the Stargate to prevent its use by enemy forces, the movie collapses into a senseless series of action scenes and grandiose explosions. It's all pretty ridiculous, but Stargate found a large and appreciative audience, spawned a cable-TV series, and continues to attract science fiction fans who are more than willing to forgive its considerable faults. --Jeff Shannon

3 out of 5 stars Pre-Independence day.......2007-09-03

If you are a fan a Roland Emmerich movies then this is for you! If you like fast paced and interstelar with huge scale space battles then you may want to skip to another movie. I can tell you this: this was the Pre-Independence movie preview! Excelent production as you can expect! On a desert in Egypt some scientits find a huge ring and they try to find out what it is. A social loser but a genius in translating is cast to translate the symbols in the ring, which turns to be a stargate to a far planet where an alien has turn a human colony into slaves. Weak performance of Kurt Russel if you ask me. The movies runs slow alowing you to enjoy the dialogs and the landscapes. I think Emmerich was still trying to find his pace and the exact kind of movie he wanted to make. In the end this group of US soldiers defeat the alien liberating the human colony and our loser turned to saviour decides to remain in that planet. I can tell you this, if you are into alien ships, desert planets, soldiers dying in battle, innocent children turned to slaves and not yet so well developed drama then this one is for you. If you are a Roland E. fan just get it so you can see the evolution until the monumental Day after tomorrow came up!

5 out of 5 stars Great movie for a low price!.......2007-08-15

I was so surprised to find this movie for such a great price! I thought it would be like a lot of the other movies that were put on DVD and bumped back up to $20 a piece. Even if you don't like the series you'll like the movie!

5 out of 5 stars My Video Tape Finally Wore Out.......2007-08-14

The ultimate fantasy movie. Yes, it is science fiction, but does a wonderful job of giving you a sense of wonder as you follow Jackson on his pedantic adventure. The movie stands on its own and is also the introduction to the Stargate cable/television series.

As a father of five sons, I have enjoyed sharing this one with each boy when he reaches 7 or 8 (on a smallish screen but with big sound).

I would warn all families away from the pilot episode for the first year's series (Stargate SG-1), due to gratuitous nudity and overly graphic display of the Goa'uld larvae habits... Have the kiddos skip the pilot. The series however is hilarious, and reasonably wholesome considering it started on cable. It is somewhat skit style, with actors stepping out of character and poking fun at almost every sci-fi movie ever made (including itself).

5 out of 5 stars Great Movie.......2007-08-08

I loved the original, and this one is just as good, if not better. I thought the new opening scenes helped to tie the storyline in later. The other added scenes are subtle, and unless you've seen the original many times, you probably would have a difficult time noticing which scenes were added, but in my opinion, that's how good this movie is. The added scenes help to give the viewer a fuller idea of the entire story. About the extras on the disk, I wish there would have been more, like maybe some "making of" footage or interviews with the actors, producers, director, etc. But I'm not complaining (very few films of that time have many extras when converted to DVD). The one special extra they do have on the disk more than makes up for the lack of interviews, in my mind. I don't want to spoil the surprise, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. It'll make you think or re-think many ideas. Overall, I'd highly recommend this version to anyone who liked the original Stargate movie.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic series with only one flaw..........2007-08-03

... it never had a broadcaster who deserved it.

The storyline is epic and captivating, expanding on the original movie and introducing hundreds of new aspects. The acting is what it should be - quick, sharp witty one-liners said with ease and conviction - and the pace of each episode is perfect.

However, it's the action and special effects that make the series exciting. Sure, it's repetitive at times, but that sense of jeopardy, danger and adventure never lets go, making it fantastic entertainment.

5 out of 5 stars Enter the Stargate.......2007-07-18

Most TV shows spun off from movies are uninvolving and uninteresting ("Blade," anyone?), but such wasn't the case with "Stargate SG-1." Starting as a simple exploration series, the series expanded into a brilliant tangle of politics, aliens, and Earth's spirit and guts -- excellent writing, acting, and a sense of humor about itself and its characters.

The Stargate has been inactive for a year. Then a bunch of Egyptian-styled warriors come through and kidnap an officer. General Hammond (Don S. Davis) pulls Jack O'Neill (Richard Dean Anderson) out of retirement, and sends him to Abydos to find out what happened. O'Neill is reunited with Daniel Jackson (Michael Shanks) -- only to have Daniel's wife and brother-in-law abducted by the evil Apophis. A rescue attempt sparks off a war with the Goa'uld -- aliens who have been impersonating human gods for many centuries.

So the team SG-1 -- made up of O'Neill, Jackson, scientist/pilot Sam Carter (Amanda Tapping) and Apophis' ex-slave Teal'c (Christopher Judge) -- explore through the Stargate, finding plenty of hostile aliens, strange allies (the Unas, the Asgard), and humans scattered all over. Not to mention the gate-builders, who have ascended to another plane.

Frst they battle the arrogant Apophis, then the devil-imitating So'kar, and the malignant half-energy Anubis and his army of undead warriors. The Goa'uld power structure starts to splinter, and new secret organizations make power plays on Earth, as SG-1 uncovers the hidden legacies of humanity's ancestors.

Even after the Goa'uld storyline ends, things haven't ended for SG-1. Cameron Mitchell (Ben Browder) is given command of SG-1, and manages to gather the disbanded team back together, with the help of a quirky alien mercenary, Vala Mal Doran (Claudia Black). Together, they find that the Milky Way faces its most deadly threat ever -- the Ori, evil ascended beings who demand that everyone worship them... or else.

Previously all "exploration" sci-fi focused on people on ships. "Stargate" avoids the usual space opera approach -- even when ships are introduced, the main focus is on walking through a big stone ring. It's also full of real military, political battles (both on and off Earth), and a very plausible reason why everybody in the galaxy (more or less) looks just like us.

It's graced with elaborate, opulant sets, solid special effects, shoot-'em-up action from Marines and Air Force, and some truly kinetic space battles (including one that resembles the climax of "Star Wars IV"). The storyline stumbles somewhat in the last two seasons, with the sudden switch in villains and cast. But all ten seasons are sprinkled with very warm human moments -- Daniel's farewell to his wife, Sam bonding with a doomed little girl, and Teal'c's struggle for freedom.

Best of all is the snappy script. Some of it comes from Teal'c ("Undomesticated equines could not remove me"), but mostly from the tart-tongued O'Neill ("Well, I guess we all start shooting. There's blood, death, hard feelings... it'd suck"). Other characters get great lines too (" I think the circle means 'the place of our legacy'...or it could be 'a piece of our leg', but the first seems to make more sense").

The cast is nothing short of brilliant -- Anderson does a quirky, disrespectful, pop culture-lovin' guy with a hidden tragic past, while Tapping and Shanks are great as an enthusiastic geek and a smart, capable military woman. And Judge is absolutely astounding as Teal'c, who slowly turns from a stoic, tragic warrior to a warm legendary hero.

Corin Nemec had a one-season stint as Daniel's "replacement," and he makes a nice, eager young newbie, and Ben Browder channels much of O'Neill's quirkiness when Anderson left. Black is kind of annoying at times, but she's admittedly quite funny and quirky, with a tragic past of her own.

"Stargate SG-1" is undeniably the best TV spinoff, and one of the best "exploration" shows to make it onto the air... and stay there for a whole decade. Definitely worth seeing, from beginning to end.

Stargate Atlantis - The Complete First Season: It's not a franchise on the order of Law & Order, CSI, or Star Trek--not yet, anyway--but with Stargate Atlantis, a more than worthy successor to SG-1, Stargate is becoming a nice little cottage industry in itself.

Stargate Atlantis - The Complete Second Season: If Stargate Atlantis isn't the coolest sci-fi series on television, this five-disc, 20-episode box set from the second season (2005-06) offers ample evidence that it's right up there.

5 out of 5 stars Stargate Atlantis.......2007-09-05

Finally a great spin-off series. I was a little sceptical when they created a spin-off to Stargate SG-1, but I was amazed from the very first episode. They managed to create a new enemy in the wraith, which is nothing like what you've seen in SG-1. This is one of the best sci-fi series ever created. All Stargate and sci-fi fans out there should own a copy of this as well as one of Stargate SG-1.

Plain and simple, if you like star trek, stargate sg1 or just good sci-fi you will love this.

5 out of 5 stars Stargate Atlantis - The Complete Seasons 1 & 2.......2007-08-29

My goodness !!! 'Unputdownable' TV. I unfortunately missed the series when it first started in NZ, but was hooked on it when I saw the reruns of Season 1. I love this show. My family love this show. It is not unusual for us to sit and watch 3 episodes in a row. Yes, I know that is sad! I love the acting, the special effects and the general storylines. The Wrath petrify me like the cybermen did in Doctor Who when I was a wee girl. I am waiting somewhat impatiently for Season 3 to arrive on my doorstep. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!!

4 out of 5 stars Great show!.......2007-08-12

If you love adventure, you'll love SG: Atlantis. Although they stumble in spots, this show has been a pleasure to watch, and this package was a great deal. I'm glad I waited.

5 out of 5 stars Stargate Lives On!.......2007-07-12

Fans of Stargate will enjoy this spinoff about a civilian and military operation in another galaxy. The Lost City of Atlantis used to belong to the Ancients, an advanced human society. Now our new Stargate group has set up base in this ancient city which has one mystery after another to unlock. Of course, trouble ensues when they encounter the great enemy of the galaxy, the Wraith. The Wraith feed by clasping their hands against their victims chest and literally suck the life out of them. This series is darker than Stargate SG-1 but is still engaging and fun. The best reason to watch is to see David Hewlett who plays Rodney McKay. McKay is easily the guy you hate to love! If you're a fan of Stargate or just want a good sci-fi action series to watch, this is it!

Product Description

The advertisements for Stargate declared ominously, "Sealed and buried for all time is the key to mankind's future." Well, mankind didn't fare too well, but director/writer Roland Emmerich and co-writer Dean Devlin did pretty well with this highly derivative science-fiction success that paved the way for Emmerich and Devlin's mega-hit Independence Day. The story begins in Giza, Egypt, in 1928, where an archaeological expedition unearths an ancient ring with cryptic hieroglyphs. The film then moves to the present day, where Egyptologist Daniel Jackson (James Spader) is busily trying to convince a group of skeptics that the pyramids were not built by man, but by an extraterrestrial force. After the lecture, a military man approaches him and offers him a job translating ancient tiles housed in an Egyptian archaeological site. The tiles turn out to be the key that turns a lock in a stargate which leads to an Earth-like world on the other side of the universe. The army sends over resident crackpot colonel Jack O'Neill (Kurt Russell) to travel through the stargate and see what's on the other side. O'Neill and his troops enter the stargate and end up in a place that resembles the Arabia from Lawrence of Arabia. The only difference is the three moons in the sky. It turns out that O'Neill has stumbled upon the land of Ra (Jaye Davidson), a sexually indeterminate Egyptian sun god. Ra was the intelligence behind the creation of humankind on Earth and this world as well, and is perturbed with the ancient Egyptians for sealing off their portion of the space and time portal, trapping Ra on the planet. Ra wants to get back to Earth and has decided the use these obtuse earthlings to do it. ~ Paul Brenner, All Movie Guide

2 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2007-07-21

I have always been a fan of this movie. I saw it on the big screen, I own it on VHS, DVD, and now Blu-Ray. I don't really have anything to add to the many available reviews of this movie, but I will comment on the Blu-ray transfer.
The BD disc is easily the worst of the several Blu-ray discs that I own. Granted it's an older movie, well over 10 years, but the technology exists now to produce the best-ever transfer of this movie for the new HD formats. The fact that neither the picture or sound of this BD is scarcely better than the existing DVD transfer suggests to me that they rushed this out for a quick market share grab with barely any regards to quality.
If you already own this on DVD, don't bother with the Blu-ray, at least not unless and until they produce a new, remastered transfer.

3 out of 5 stars To another world.......2007-07-19

"Stargate" is, obviously, the movie that later spawned the hit "Stargate SG-1" TV series, and its spinoffs.

But taken on its own merits, "Stargate" is a pretty entertaining blockbuster with some big flaws. It uncomfortably straddles the fence between "shoot-em-up bombs'n'action" and "mythology sci-fi," but provides a solid villain, some sketchy writing, and the foundation for a hit TV show. Well, it's definitely far better than your average sci-fi blockbuster.

Egyptologist Daniel Jackson (James Spader) has just lost his job, when a mysterious old lady invites him to become involved in a secret military project. Soon he finds out why -- a massive stone ring found in Giza decades ago, with strange symbols on a central ring. When they use his calculations, the Air Force is able to open a wormhole to a distant galaxy.

Obviously a recon team is sent through, led by the grieving Colonel O'Neil (Kurt Russell). This new world is a desert planet, inhabited by a race of primitive human slaves who practically worship the strangers. But things turn deadly when a pyramid ship descends on the desert, and a malevolent "god" decides to obliterate Earth -- using a nuclear bomb O'Neil brought along.

It's a pretty straightforward action plot -- scientist opens gateway to new planet, bad guy shows up and makes trouble, good guys attack bad guy with the help of plucky natives. "Stargate" doesn't add much to the typical formula, but it does dress it up with gilded robes, giant stone statues, glittering starships and sandswept deserts.

In fact, spectacle is what "Stargate" excels at -- it has big armies of invading, big ships, big pyramids, and big battles with Ra's warriors. When it comes to gun battles and explosions, Roland Emmerich does a pretty decent job. However, he gets mesmerized by the gilded interior of Ra's starship and the prettyboy alien slinking around -- the middle part of the movie is very slow-moving.

It's more clumsy at the intimate stuff of character development, such as Daniel's serious romance with a chief's daughter, or O'Neil's depression over his son. It just never feels natural or deep. The accompanying dialogue is usually pretty solid, but sometimes gets downright clumsy ("I don't want to die. Your men don't want to die. These people don't want to die. It's a shame you're in such a hurry to").

Spade pretty much steals the show as a lovable geek who sticks to his guns, even if it makes him a laughingstock. And the geek gets the girl, not the military grunts -- a nice change. Russell is stuck with a rather stiff, humourless military man, although he loosens up in the last lap. And Alexis Cruz, Mili Avital and Erick Avari all get kudos for making the lovable, deep characters come alive without a word of English.

"Stargate" is a fun movie for the spectacle and slam-bang action scenes, so long as the weak scripting doesn't hold you up. And it served as a good foundation for one of the best "exploration" sci-fi series in ages.

5 out of 5 stars The Subtitles are there if you took the time to look.......2007-06-27

The only complaint I've found is that there's no subtitles for the Alien language without turning on subtitles for the whole movie. There is a second English subtitle option that just has the alien language. It wasn't in the menu itself because it's supposed to play automatically, but if you just use the subtitle button on your remote it comes up. Took a whole two minutes to find.

3 out of 5 stars Stargate on Blu-Ray-The Best Version Available! But..........2007-05-30

First, let me start by saying that I love this movie. Perhaps because I traveled to Egypt when I was 16 and I saw the glory of the giant pyramids in person (just don't tell an Egyptian that it was the aliens who built their pyramids and not their ancestors, he or she will be mad at you forever!).
I also love Sci-Fi flicks, and this movie has a great story. if you haven't seen it and you like Sci-Fi movies, even adventure movies with Kurt Russell, you'll love this one.

Now about the Blu-ray DVD:

Let me say that I have been a happy HD DVD owner for almost a year now, but seeing some the movies that I love in Blu-ray only, made me decide to get a Blu-ray player.

Video: The picture quality of this Blu-ray disc shows excellent CLARITY and BRIGHTNESS and BETTER COLORS that were not on the standard DVD. It seems that the brightness level was boosted, but also at the cost of some graininess and video noise.

The Picture looks almost perfect in the bright sunny desert scenes, but with very visible grains indoors.
Overall, comparing this version to the dark (less grainy SD DVD) is like the difference between Day and Night!
Also, This BD has a cool disc menu with ancient Egyptian Hieroglyphic that turn into English letter.

There was a problem with the subtitled translation of the Alien language or ancient Egyptian (I'm not sure if this language was actually made up in Hollywood like the "Clangon" language in the Star Trek Movies). The problem is, the translation should show up in English whenever that language is spoken, but it doesn't!!!!!! One helpful reviewer on this page suggested going to the main menu and selecting English subs, and it works!, but you end up with subtitles throughout the whole movie. This release might have been rushed to the market (like many Blu-ray releases of 2006 in order to compete with the other HD format). How long do we "Stargate" fan have to wait again before we get a release with a good picture quality (hopefully grain free and no subtitle problem)????

Audio: very good

Conclusion: I can say that this is the best version of this movie available to date! but it has its problems. If you can't wait and you don't mind turning on the subtitles during the whole movie, it's a great release under $20.

5 out of 5 stars I love this movie.......2007-05-13
