Thoughtful, Weel Crafted Thriller.......2007-09-14
I've seen the third Bourne movie three times now and I'm very much looking forward to it's video release so I can add it to the first two movies. Both of which are so well crafted - though by two different directors - that (with the additional of the third) they will make one of the most enduring movie trilogies (or series if we're so lucky as to get a fourth movie) ever created.
Matt Damon throughly inhabits the character. The casting is perfect down through the extra's. The director(s) use the locations to great advantage. The cutting moves the action along at a blistering pace, yet in repeat viewings there are plenty of delightful discoveries to make that reflect the care put into the production.
My only quibble is the excessive reliance on "shaky cam" (combat video) film-technique. Thankfully the effects of which are minimized on the small screen. While I think it adds excitement and energy, the flurry of camera movements distracts from the choreography of the martial arts in the second and third movies. Yes, it's a minor disappointment, but the fight scenes are very well-thought out and as carefully crafted as everything else in the production.
On days when my own life seems incoherent, I can always put one of the Bourne movies in the DVD and spend a couple of hours with someone who always knows what he should do next and has the resources to pull it off.
Not a fan of the Shaky cam.......2007-09-09
But over all a great movie. I love the Fights But in this movie the camera shakes so much that its hard to see them.
Movie review.......2007-09-08
If you like action then this is a great movie. You should watch the Bourne Idenity first for context.
'the moment you entered her life she was dead'.......2007-08-28
Certainly different from its predecessor, Supremacy puts its emphasis on political intrigue and espionage rather than personal matters... most of the time. The agency here is not entirely bad anymore.
Treadstone is dismantled but its shadows still hanging heavily.
This installment is not as even as the first one. There are a couple of really emotional scenes, showing loss, anger, and redemption and they rival anything from the first movie. Then there are suspiciously long stretches devoid of emotion. The action too gets a tad lower mark. The beginnings of mad cameraman are already evident, fast cuts, crazy angles, dark and noisy action... the style, which was further `perfected' in the third film.
JB has no clear-cut friends here, acting alone, and more methodically than ever. The tale here is a bit grimmer, too.
The score now has a central theme. Firstly introduced in Goa scenes, its slower version comes back from time to time. I liked it.

Very entertaining action-packed movies. The "file" packaging is clever marketing. We enjoyed the extras provided on disk 3 which included interesting pieces featuring author Robert Ludlum. Looking forward to The Bourne Ultimatum.

The Power of Observation keeps Bourne ahead of his predators..........2006-07-22
As a strategy consultant, & whenever I go to the movies (or watch movies at home), I often take the opportunity to seek out possibilities of using them to teach life (survival) skills to participants in my seminars & workshops.
The two Bourne movies, namely The Bourne Identity & The Bourne Supremacy, are two great examples.
Both movies are loosely based on Robert Ludlum's work, which included The Rheinmann Exchange, The Osterman Weekend & the Holcroft Covenant. They have also been made into great movies.
In the first move, with the opening scene: An unconscious young man is pulled out off the Mediterranean coast by a fishing boat one stormy night. Thinking that the young man is dead, a curious fisherman with a scalpel finds two bullets in his back & a microchip in his hip. The chip reveals a Swiss bank account. But our wet hero isn't dead but realises that he has amnesia. He then rushes to Zurich. In the bank vault, he discovers his name, Jason Bourne (played by Mark Damon). In addition, he finds a baffling pile of different passports, all with his picture, and a large chunk of cash. In the US Embassy, he bumps into Marie (played by Franka Potente), along with the fact that someone wants to kill him. Armed with a bag of money and superb martial arts skills, & with Marie by his side, he scours Paris for clues about his identity and past life...& finds himself in the middle of two assassination plots (one assassin was played by Clive Owen, as 'The Profesosr') masterminded by rouge elements of the CIA.
In the second movie, with the opening scene, continuing from the first movie: Jason Bourne is recovering in Goa, India with Marie. He spots a mysterious dark-glassed man with the wrong clothes while jogging. He escapes with Marie but she is shot in the ensuing chase. The next scene shows CIA operatives under deputy director Pamela Landy (Joan Allen) conducting a sting operation to fish out a mole in CIA but something goes wrong. Her subsequent investigation leads to the highly-classified Treadstone project, which apparently involves Jason Bourne. She even finds evidence that Bourne is behind what happened to her botched operation. So Bourne sets out to clear his name. The remaining part of the movie shows Bourne outsmarting CIA operatives - & the assassin (played menacingly by Karl Urban as Kirill) - & tracking down the rogue elements in the CIA with shady connections to the Russian mob, who have jointly framed him in the first place.
In the two movies, Jason Bourne demonstrates his uncanny ability to observe & pay attention to what's around him - note: notice the exceptions in the details of the environment - which allows him to constantly stay ahead of his predators & at the same time, stay agile (mentally & physically) to anticipate dangers & get out of precarious situations.
For example...remember the scene in the second movie...after he had jogged at the beach, he observed a dark-glassed man whose clothing & behaviour somehow did not match the environment...
His ability to stay calm, size up dangerous situations & come up with super-quick, innovative solutions to escape from capture is well demonstrated in both movies.
For example...remember the scene in the first movie, where he jumped down several storeys with a dead body as cushion while blasting his gun at his assassins running up the staircase...the scene in the second movie, where he improvised a weapon out of rolled newspapers & an explosive escape using a magazine stuffed into a burning toaster in a quickly engineered gas-filled room...Wow! that was great!
Naturally, I am also fascinated by the many unique fighting sequences (particularly the one within a tight environment in the second movie), car chases, cat & mouse games, etc. in both movies.
Additionally, what I like about both movies is the total absence of super-duper gadgets commonly found in such spy-thriller movies. Jason Bourne used only his sheer human ingenuity & creativity to outsmart his enemies.
To end my review, I must add that I have enjoyed watching both movies, experientially as well as educationally.
Bourne movie series are GREAT, but the books suck.......2006-05-13
A warning for those of you thinking of reading the books that the movies were based on: The books (B. Identity, B. Supremacy, and B. Ultimatum) and the movies (B. Identity and B. Supremacy starring Matt Damon) have absolutely no relationship whatsoever. The movies were excellent, the books are a miserable waste of time.
The plotlines in the two movies aren't anything like those in the books. The plots laid out in the books are completely implausible, and frankly moronic. The movies writers obviously realized that the books were crap so they just wrote their own story lines.
Bottom line: Don't waste your time on these books, watch the movies instead.
Who am I??.......2006-04-06
Matt Damon is marvelous at rogue agent Jason Bourne: fluent in several language, martial arts expert, holder of multiple passports, a Swiss bank account, and high intelligence. Both movies were great except that Marie was murdered in the sequel. Ludlum's Bourne really does come alive in Damon. From Asia, to Berlin, Moscow, Paris, New York, this is way better than James Bond!
Mindless - and Good.......2006-02-01
Mindless action entertainment - and good. Fantastic martial arts and car chase scenes, clever plotting, and excellent acting by the ensemble casts in both films
make them highly entertaining. When you need a little adrenalin boost, these films can be just the thing.
Bourne away.......2005-09-03
Robert Ludlum may have passed on, but his work is definitely alive in the cinema. His taut Jason Bourne series has been adapted into two movies (so far), "The Bourne Identity" and "The Bourne Supremacy," which are action-packed but also brimming with flaws.
"The Bourne Identity" opens with an amnesiac (Matt Damon) being hauled onto a fishing boat, with two bullets in his back. Once he's recovered, he goes in search of his identity -- and finds links to a sinister organization that is out to kill him. And as he goes on the run, Jason Bourne must uncover who he is and why he is a fighting machine.
"The Bourne Supremacy" opens with Bourne tormented by nightmares, even though he's living peacefully in India. But then his enemies are after him again, and even destroy his beloved girlfriend. Now Bourne is out for revenge against the people who won't leave him in peace -- assuming that they don't kill him first.
What can an action movie do that hasn't been done before? That's a hard question to answer, and most efforts (any "XXX" movie, for example) fall horribly flat.
But these two movies attempt to find something unique. And they succeed to some degree: "Bourne Identity" has a stripped-down appeal, complete with down-the-stairs car chases and stark European cities, and although the story seems to meander at times, it isn't peppered with stale witticisms and gadgets.
Unfortunately, the second movie was done by a different director -- a far less talented one. And so the cinematography is downright atrocious, with half the scenes done in a shakycam style. Even on a small screen, it's enough to make you seasick. At least it distracts from the stumbling if tense plot.
Matt Damon obviously threw his all into these films. His acting is made intriguing by its intensity, which keeps him from seeming like yet another James Bond clone, albeit one with amnesia. Much of the film's tension comes from Damon, and he also provides it with some surprisingly realistic-looking fights.
And "Supremacy" is graced with two excellent performances, in the icy, taut Joan Allen and the sinister Karl Urban. Bourne's love interests aren't quite as good: Julia Stiles doesn't have enough screen time to make us like her character, and Franka Potente plays a dizzy, inglorious Bond girl for Damon to bed.
Though "Bourne Supremacy" is a dizzying shakycam trip, the films together are a taut action duology, yet they lack equally taut storylines. Matt Damon's intense performance is what keeps it from being mediocre.
Amazon.com
Good enough to suggest long-term franchise potential, The Bourne Supremacy is a thriller fans will appreciate for its well-crafted suspense, and for its triumph of competence over logic (or lack thereof). Picking up where The Bourne Identity left off, the action begins when CIA assassin and partial amnesiac Jason Bourne (a role reprised with efficient intensity by Matt Damon) is framed for a murder in Berlin, setting off a chain reaction of pursuits involving CIA handlers (led by Joan Allen and the duplicitous Brian Cox, with Julia Stiles returning from the previous film) and a shadowy Russian oil magnate. The fast-paced action hurtles from India to Berlin, Moscow, and Italy, and as he did with the critically acclaimed Bloody Sunday, director Paul Greengrass puts you right in the thick of it with split-second editing (too much of it, actually) and a knack for well-sustained tension. It doesn't all make sense, and bears little resemblance to Robert Ludlum's novel, but with Damon proving to be an appealingly unconventional action hero, there's plenty to look forward to. --Jeff Shannon
Description
They should have left him alone. Academy Award winner Matt Damon is back as expert assassin Jason Bourne in the stunning, non-stop action hit. Fuelled by awesome fight scenes and some of the most breathtaking chase sequences ever filmed, it's a state-of-the-art espionage thriller that explodes into action and never lets up!
Customer Reviews:
How, I reapeat, how can this have been authorized?.......2004-09-28
Paul Greengrass, mark this name.... How can the studio approve such a lame picture? This movie is a swindle from beginning to end. Why? Let me explain.
We had a previously decent, intriguing, sometimes exciting spy action thriller with THe Bourne Identity. What do we hav in this sequence? Let me answer:
1) ZERO suspense. You can miles ahead who is (are) the bad guys. Absolutely nothing like the first movie.
2) How can a director, ON PURPOSE, decide to shoot a film in such an obnoxious way, using a hand camera all along the way, and ordering his cameramen to shake it, shake it, and shake it once more, and then goes into the editor's room and orders the editor to cut from frame to frame in less than a second, along THE WHOLE MOVIE. It's not only in the action scenes. It's in the WHOLE MOVIE! It's something to wonder when a director shows such contempt for his audience, not showing ONE SINGLE fight sequence in a way that we could follow! And, even doing so, he receives a lot of reviews like "Oh, except for that shaky camera work, the movie is very good..." How can a movie be good, no matter the quality of its plot, if we CAN'T WATCH IT??
The same way that Greengrass showed contempt for me (as a member of the audience paying nine bucks for watching this mess), I show contempt for him, and I do not intend to watch any more movies directed by him. I'd also like to know if Damon has been bitten by the famous "Affleck's Virus", and began to choose his roles only for the paycheck, because I refuse to believe that he got satisfied with the final editing result of this mess.
THE BOURNE SUPREMACY is a mess of a movei, COMPLETELY ruined by the director's choices. It's a shame that no one above him put a halt to it. Anyway, the movie is making money, so they must be proud of making audiences sick while watching it.
Deceiving media campaign..........2004-09-28
It's incredible how sometimes a movie sometimes has the "blessing" of all the media... IT seems all of the critics are getting bribbed....
It's absurd. They hailed this movie as a "smart action flick", "one that has brains", "better than the original". Don't believe all these lies. Whatever merits this movie may have, they are ruined by one single fact: THE EDITING OF THIS MOVIE SUC..S!! It's the worst I've seen in a long time. It's video clip / MTV edition all the way, you can not follow the car chase or the fights. It's annoying, really annoying. The camera don't star "firm" in position for more than one half of a second
The lack of quality of the story is another point. It's much less, I mean MUCH LESS, suspenseful than the first one. Youc an see miles away waht happened.
I don't recommend this movie wven for rental.
The Bourne Supremacy Rocks!.......2004-09-25
Yeah, the camera work might have ruined the experience, but it was so much better than the first one! The acting was so much better (especially by Julia Stiles). She had a much more bigger role as Nikki in this movie. Great twist with having Brian Cox as the bad guy in this movie.
This movie beats out some spy movies (especially James Bond). Lets get Bond to fight against Bourne. Lets see who will win. (most likely bourne). Both The Bourne Identity and The Bourne Supremacy are incredible movies and kicks James Bond in the ass. Incredible! Love IT!!!!!!
Great sequel to a good movie.......2004-09-07
Not many sequels are better than the movies they follow, the Bourne Identity in this case. Fewer are better than a very good original. Even fewer are lots better. This is one.
This movie stands well by itself, but also follows seamlessly from the first. Our hero, Bourne, has escaped a career as a government assassin. He is living a small, happy life in a remote village, with the woman he loves. Then she is killed in an attempt on his life. Bourne has just declared war on the CIA, and the CIA had better defend itself.
After that, the movie is pretty much one long chase scene. Saying almost anything more would give away one of the movie's surprises, and the movie is full of surprises. I can tell you that the big car chase is a great sample of its kind, with lots of banging around in narrow, crowded streets. I'd certainly put my money on Bourne in any demolition derby.
A few characters from the first movie have roles here, creating a strong continuity across the two. Watch for changes in the characters' roles, though - there always seems to be one more surprise ahead, right to the last seconds of the movie.
This is a very good spy/action flick. The characters are all larger than life, without crossing over into distortion. The action starts at a run, the pace just picks up until the very end, and insistently pulls the viewer along. If you like action movies, this will grab you.

Action Packed Thiller.......2004-09-04
The Bourne Supremacy is a great Action movie. The car crashes and chase scenes are astounding. The cinematography done during the car crashes is just completely amazing and thrilling. If you
want to see great action in a movie, this is the movie to see.
Matt Damon is a great action-adventure star. Joan Allen is perfect as the head of the agency out to stop Bourne. Julia Stiles shows what a great actress she is, she is completely believable in a a great role.
A fun and adventurous movie that will have you on the edge of your seat.

Customer Reviews:
Bourne away.......2005-11-23
Robert Ludlum may have passed on, but his work is definitely alive in the cinema. His taut Jason Bourne series has been adapted into two movies (so far), "The Bourne Identity" and "The Bourne Supremacy," which are action-packed and tautly directed but also brimming with flaws.
Bang bang, blast blast, add a few naked bodies, and that is all they do for innovation.
But these two movies at least attempt to find something unique. And they succeed to some degree: "Bourne Identity" has a stripped-down appeal, complete with down-the-stairs car chases and stark European cities, and although the story seems to meander at times, it isn't peppered with stale witticisms and hokey gadgets.
Unfortunately, the second movie was done by a different director -- a far less talented one, alas. And so the cinematography is downright atrocious, with half the scenes done in a shakycam style that bobs all over the place.
He's really trying, it seems. Much of the film's tension comes from Damon, and he also provides it with some surprisingly realistic-looking fights.
And "Supremacy" is graced with two excellent performances, in the icy, taut Joan Allen and the sinister Karl Urban. Bourne's love interests aren't quite as good: Julia Stiles doesn't have enough screen time to make us like her character, and Franka Potente plays a dizzy, inglorious Bond girl who's just there for Damon to bed.
Though "Bourne Supremacy" is a dizzying shakycam trip, the films together are a taut action duology, yet they lack equally taut storylines. Matt Damon's intense performance is what keeps it from being mediocre.
