Get ready for some seriously big hair. The Last Dragon--or, to call it by its full title, Berry Gordy's the Last Dragon--is a stunning example of 1980s camp cinema. One-name kung fu wonder Taimak plays Leroy Green, a.k.a. Bruce Leroy, a humble student of kung fu who has achieved the highest level of skill, but hasn't yet found his inner master. Wandering through the streets of New York in a Chinese peasant outfit, he accidentally becomes the protector of nightclub hostess/video jockey Laura Charles (played by former Prince protégé Vanity, who also costarred in the trash classic Action Jackson). She's being threatened by a height-challenged mobster who wants her to play his girlfriend's video (the girlfriend is something of a Cyndi Lauper look-alike, played by Broadway star Faith Prince). Meanwhile, a man who calls himself Sho'Nuff, the Shogun of Harlem, wants to kick Leroy's ass and prove himself the baddest kung fu master in town. Add to this Leroy's smart-mouthed brother Richie (who calls Leroy "the chocolate-covered yellow peril"), a dregs-of-Motown soundtrack (DeBarge is a high point), ninja battles, pseudo-Eastern philosophical babble, and a jaw-dropping club performance by Vanity, and you have a hilarious example of why we're all so very glad the '80s are over. Featuring a bit role by William H. Macy (Fargo, Magnolia). --Bret Fetzer

4 out of 5 stars One to Remember..........2007-09-04

I remember when this movie hit the theaters. It was 1985 and instantly this movie became one of my childhood favorites. Although, this movie wasn't academy awarding winning material it did leave a long lasting impression on many. The movie covered romance, drama, comedy, and action. I wouldn't say that Taimak and Vanity were the best of actors at the time, but Taimak instantly became every teenaged girl's fantasy as did Vanity for every teenaged boy.

This film was one of the movies that began the spoof era. It's just one of those films because it wasn't award winning and it was a predominately African American movie, you couldn't help but support it. This movie came along when blaxploitation films had fated, but right before inner city hood movies were the rave (i.e. Boys in the Hood, Menace II Society, and Dead Presidents). We fell in love with this movie, Krush Groove, and Breakin' because it was about the black man underdogs and how they overcame their challenges.

5 out of 5 stars Kung Fu for the Ghetto!!!.......2007-08-13

Great pop culture classic. If your into "TRUE" hip-hop, then you'll definitely appreciate this movie.

5 out of 5 stars "You are the last dragon. You posses the power of the glow.".......2007-08-04

Even though this movie might be cheesy compared to the movies that come out now, this is still a classic martial arts film...If you are a fan of karate movies and you haven't seen this one, then you are missing out...I love how they even pay a tribute to the best karate movie ever made "Enter The Dragon" when a fight between Sho' Nuff and other people breaks out in a movie theater and they are playing that movie in the background...

5 out of 5 stars Cheesy Cult Classic.......2007-07-16

But great! For an at-home double feature, pair it up with Caveman (w/Ringo Starr).

5 out of 5 stars Great Nostalgia!.......2007-07-16

This movie is a classic, it really took me back, and it was just as good as before.

Description

In one of his early films, acclaimed director John Woo crafts an action-packed tale of a son who recruits two master swordsmen to help avenge his father's murder.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars "So, boozing saved my life? Yeah, you could say that.".......2007-09-05

Thank you John Woo for directing this, one of my favorite films of this era in kung fu cinema. One of the things that put this film so high on my list is the great characters and how interesting and unique they are. Even the characters with less screen time shine here nearly as bright as the stars of the film themselves. The assasin Pray for instance, has fantastic presence in all of his scenes and has the best fight scene in the film when he battles Chang to the death (my opinion of course). Characters, plot, action, choreography, twists, humor... it's all here and I can't recommend this film enough (not to mention 30 of the last 40 minutes is non-stop action!). Dragon Dynasty as per usual gives it all the respect it deserves with top notch picture, sound, and special features.

5 out of 5 stars Another magnificent Dragon Dynasty release .......2007-07-24

Wei Pai stars as a master swordsman who loves his sister and always tries to help people in need. Damian Lau (Duel to the Death) stars as a drunkard who's sword skills are at least equal to Wei Pai's. A man named Master Kao is looking for men to revenge his family who were killed at the start of the movie. Master Kao gets the 2 swordsmen to help him out, but he seems to be hiding what his plan really is. I thought I knew exactly what was going on, but I got a major surprise during the last act of the movie. The story is good for the most part, but the action is definitely the best thing about the movie.

If you have seen The Hand of Death, then you know that John Woo was a good kung fu movie maker. Last Hurrah for Chivalry is his masterpiece. There are plenty of heroic moments, and it gets pretty bloody, but John Woo's style is very unique. The story is told well, the 2 heroes have some good comedic exchanges, and the villains are all extremely tough. It covers all the essentials. 110% effort was put into every part of this movie, including the sets. Golden Harvest tried hard to rival the Shaw Brothers sets, and their hard work really pays off. The sets never feel cheap, and the outdoor locations are also stunning. The cinematography always feels alive and makes scenes better than they would be just sitting idle. You can see why John Woo moved onto bigger and better things not long after making this.

The action is top notch. The choreography isn't the absolute best you will ever see, but the directing and editing are superb, and the action scenes are very intense. Fung Hak-on (the fight choreographer) has the best fight of the movie vs. Wei Pai, and all of the other fights are good. This is the best physical performance I have ever seen from Damian Lau. His sword skills are of course excellent, but his athletic skills also impressed me. Lee Hoi San is great as the main villain, but Chien Yuet San steals the show as the Sleeping Wizard. I have seen the sleeping style used in 4 or 5 movies, but this is by far the funniest version. And the action is not strictly sword fighting. There is a great hand to hand match with Lee Hoi San, and even during the sword fights there are a lot of punches.

4.5/5

The picture quality is too bright and there is some speckling, but the picture quality is still pretty good. Sound quality is perfect. The English dub is hard to listen to, but luckily the original Cantonese track is included. Subtitles are well written.

Special features include a great commentary from Bey Logan. He is a very knowledgable Hong Kong film expert, and he gives tons of interesting info. This is one of the better Dragon Dynasty commentaries I have heard.

In the 9 minute interview with Fung Hak-on, he talks about how he came to work with John Woo. He also talks about having to film 100 strokes in a single take. This might seem unbelievable, but he says that he messed up on the 99th stroke and had to film it over again. It ended up taking too long, and John Woo had to edit it. Filming fight scenes in great kung fu movies did not take a day or two, it could take half a year, or sometimes even longer depending on how many action scenes are in the movie. He also talks about his assistant Chien Yuet Sang and his crazy sleeping style. And it seems that this movie is where that style came from. Fung Hak-on is definintely among the best ever fight choreographers, and it is always a joy to hear every word he has to say. The great thing about the Dragon Dynasty DVDs is that they always get new interviews with the actors. It is really a kung fu movies fan's dream come true.

The 11 minute interview with Lee Hoi San is great. He talks about his long friendship with Fung Hak-on, his role in the movie, and other things.

The 11 minute Legendary Weapons featurette is another Dragon Dynasty exclusive. It is hosted by Bey Logan and he gives short descriptions of the weapons used in the movie, and also gives demonstrations. Then some Chinese guy gives a more full demonstration. Yet another excellent special feature from Dragon Dynasty.

I am stuck between whether I should give this movie a 4 or a 5 star rating, but the special features easily bump this disc up up to a 5.

5 out of 5 stars Possibly the best saga of Dragonball.......2007-05-24

I dont find dragonball all that great. In fact I rarely watch it. But this saga is my favorite of Dragonball. The series doesn't pick up until the Commander Red Saga when Kid Goku fights Mercenary Tao and destroys the Red Ribbon Army. This saga forces Goku to answer for his apparent killing of Tao. The 22nd Martial arts Tournament takes place and Kid Goku and Krillin finds themselves fighting for their very lives. This could be the best of the volumes due to its stories and the epic battle between Goku and Tien. This battle focused on skills and martial arts instead of the powering up and energy attacks you later see in DBZ. If you must own anything before the DBZ era, then this set is definitely the one to own. It is a great saga. It features 18 episodes on 2 disks.

5 out of 5 stars the conflict between the crane and turtles pupils.......2006-08-14

This saga has the crane hermits pupils in the tournement only to find out that goku had fought tao and defeated tao and that fired them up.So that makes even harder for goku and krillin. And it also has the return of jackie chun the champian of the the last world tournement. And finally tien turns from his evil ways. But at the end we find after goku forgets his power pole and the four star dragonball at the restraunt entrence. krillin offers to get it but goku senses danger but still lets him go but after awhile he does not come back.Goku can hear krillin in his head so goku rushes out of the restaraunt only to find his best friend dead with the man that announces the tournement laid next to him with goku furious of his freinds death that ends the the saga for now.I personnaly love this saga because it has pretty good fights.I give this five stars.

5 out of 5 stars Ten Shinhan Saga.......2006-07-21

I loved this saga mostly because of the action. This saga contains 18episodes (9episodes on each disc. Tien won the tournament because Goku had bad luck and crashed into a stupid truck. I thought that that was extremely cheap but what really fascinated me was in the end of the saga. Krillan was killed by a mysterious new villain. I really suggest buying this saga because you'll have a lot of fun!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Not my favorite Dragon Ball saga, but close.......2006-07-10

The Tien Shinhan Saga is wonderful. It contains 18 episodes of Dragon Ball on only 2 discs which is just incredible. This saga deals with the 22nd Annual World Martial Arts Tournament. Once again Goku, Krillin, Yamcha, and Jackie Chun enter the tournament, but who are these two new fighters who seem to know Master Roshi? A new master from Roshi's past is revealed. The fights are not to be missed as almost all of them are spectacular. My personal favorites were Tien vs. Jackie Chun and Tien vs. Goku.

This saga is my second favorite in Dragon Ball due to the final episode entitled, "The Fallen." This episode's title has a double meaning in that it literally means Goku and Tien are falling from the sky and only one can become champion, but it also means the death of one of our heroes. This episode sets up for in my opinion the greatest saga of Dragon Ball, the King Piccolo saga.

Overall, the Tienshinhan Saga has a great amount of fighting and many episodes. I would recommend it to any fans of DB or DBZ.

5 out of 5 stars The best DB set.......2005-06-19

Arguably the best saga in the original Dragonball anime, we find that Goku, Kuririn, Yamcha, and Master Roshi/Jackie Chun are once again participating in the Tenkaichi Budokai. However, Tenshinhan and Chaozu, the two warriors Goku encountered at the end of the Fortuneteller Baba set, have also entered, and soon what starts out as a fun-filled time turns into a fight for life! You see, Tenshinhan and Chaozu's master is the evil Crane Hermit, and he just happens to be Master Roshi's rival! Not only that, but Tao, the assassin Goku defeated, happened to be his younger brother! When the Crane Hermit learns what happened to his baby bro, he's determined to make sure that Goku and Kuririn die no matter what! Complicating matters are the mysterious Manwolf, who seems to have it in for Jackie Chun, and the fighter Panputto, who's sleazy agent is determined to make sure he wins the Budokai. Not only that, but despite Tenshinhan's claims that he wants to become an assassin, Master Roshi realizes that there is some good in him. Will he be able to get Tenshinhan to change his ways?

Of course, this saga is a tournament, and with that you can expect tons of fighting, correct? Well, of course! With 18 episodes total, there are a ton of brawls throughout, but the highlight for me has to be the final five. These form a whopping 5-episode battle between Goku and Tenshinhan, which are some of the greatest parts of the entire Dragonball storyline ever. The ending also ends on quite a cliffhanger, leading into the next set(King Piccolo, part 1), but even though I don't own that one yet, but, I'm more than happy with this one, which is easily worth the $40 price.

5 out of 5 stars The Red Ribbon Army Falls.......2006-07-11

This saga contains ten episodes of the terrific television show Dragon Ball. Goku has defeated General Blue and recovered the Dragon Balls. Now he moves on still searching for his granpa's four star ball. His quest takes him to the land of Korin, a mysterious forest which is said to be watched over by a legendary martial arts master.

Meanwhile, General Red has become tired of all his men losing to one boy. He sends Mercenary Tao after Goku. Tao is by far the most powerful opponent Goku has faced in the show as of yet. After making new friends at the foot of Korin Tower, Goku soon finds himself struggling to survive a battle with Mercenary Tao that he may not be able to win! As all hope seems lost, Goku must search for the legendary Korin himself and hope he can drink the Sacred Water guarded by Korin. Can Goku reach Korin and get the Sacred Water? Can he defeat Mercenary Tao? Is it possible for the entire Red Ribbon Army to fall at the hands of a mere child? Buy this volume and find out!

I recommend this volume to any fan of DB or DBZ, but some scenes are graphic and should not be viewed by younger audiences. (I speak mostly of Mercenary Tao's viciousness and the delight he takes in killing.) I specifically enjoy this saga because it is the first time Goku actually loses to a villain and also introduces Korin, a major character for the rest of the series.

5 out of 5 stars Commander Red Saga.......2003-12-07

This is the set of DVDs after General Blue. In this series, the evil Mercenary Tao tangles with Goku, and WINS!! But Goku goes through a series of adventures and finds in himself strength.

If you're looking at this DVD, you probably already know the quality of Dragonball. However, the previous two DVDs in the set were not up to standard. This series is much better than the previous General Blue and Red Ribbon sagas. Instead of almost random plots in each episode, there is a definite start, finish and character development. The plot is much better, back to the quality of the first two DVDs.

The only complaints I have is that there are only 10 episodes in this set, not the 12 or 16 on previous Dragonball DVDs. This is better than most of the other drek on TV, and definitely worth buying.

5 out of 5 stars My girls love them!.......2007-01-14

My 9 and 12 year old girls watch these episodes over and over again. It's like "Harry Potter" for girls except it's "good fairies" battling "bad witches". Other than the skimpy costumes the characters wear sometimes, I have nothing bad to say. I've watched a few episodes and they have some good lessons to teach.

5 out of 5 stars Winx Club Volume Two: The Power of Dragon Fire.......2006-07-28

The second volume of Winx Club has six episodes, and each one of them is, as Musa (one of my favorite Winx Club fairies) would say, slammin'! Bloom, Stella, Musa, Tecna, and Flora are five fairies at a magical school called Alfea. (My favorite fairies are Musa and Flora, who have the powers of music and flowers.) Buy this DVD so you can join them and their friends in their many magical adventures! I loved this DVD, and I watched it over and over again many times. It is very helpful because it let me catch up on the early episodes I hadn't seen yet. I'm eleven, and Winx Club is my favorite TV show. I can watch it every Saturday morning at 9:30 on 4Kids TV.

    Winx Club Theme Song:

Close your eyes, and open your heart, believe in yourself, that's how it starts! Dreams will come true, just wait and see, 'cause the magic's in you, and the magic's in me! We are the Winx, we are the Winx, come join the club, we are the Winx, we are the Winx, we are the Winx, come join the club, we are the Winx! Magical flowers, digital powers, rhythms and tunes, the sun and the moon! Keep on searching, far and wide, for the fire burning deep inside! We've got the style, and we've got the flair, look all you want, just don't touch the hair! We are the Winx, we are the Winx, come join the club, we are the Winx, we are the Winx, we are the Winx, come join the club, we are the Winx!

    5 out of 5 stars Baba's Five Warriors.......2006-07-11

After defeating the Red Ribbon Army, Goku learns finding the final Dragon Ball won't be as easy as he thought. For some reason, it can't be seen on the Dragon Radar. As Goku wonders how he can find the final Dragon Ball, Master Roshi knows of a way, but it won't be easy. Goku and his friends search out Fortune Teller Baba who can find anything with her powers. Goku and friends find that she charges $10 million zeni for her services. (Zeni is money in the DB world) However, if Goku and the gang can defeat Baba's five warrior's she will show them the way to the final Dragon Ball.

Baba's warriors are very unique and each have funny and exciting battles. Goku is sure in his abilities until he faces off with Baba's last warrior, a man in a Bunny Mask! How does this man know all of Goku's moves and weaknesses and why does he smell nice to Goku? The secret is revealed, as well as the location of the last Dragon Ball, in the 16 episode Fortune Teller Baba Saga!

I like the battles in this saga as well as the touching moments when you remember Goku is still just a kid at heart. (Buy the episodes and you'll see what I mean.) I recommend this volume only to older fans of DB and DBZ because it contains quite a bit of nudity, more than any other saga. (Goku and Bulma come to mind) Still, this is a good saga with comedy and action and it's tough to beat a great deal like 16 episodes on just 2 disks.

5 out of 5 stars use audio/subtitle in innovative way to enjoy this disc.......2006-06-15

I am writing this review for this set as it was quite fun using the audio/subtitle options on this dvd set. First, I found that the subtitles for the Japanese dialogue are almost completely different from the english audio/subtitle. SO you can watch it in English Audio & have the japanese subtitle[option 2] and watch the differences in meaning & intent.

Another way is to watch the Japanese Dialogue but w/ the english subtitle[option 1] & you will notice how WILD the english audio was, especially in the baba saga.

Personally I enjoy the Japanese audio w/ japanese translated subtitle for 99% of Japanese anime as they convey the original intent of the creator's work. But funimation had changed the INTENT for the ENGLISH audio & it is quite funny in a camp/kitsch way.

And the fortuneteller baba saga had a lot of out-of-the-way dialogue vs Japanese subtitle, which is not the case for Commander Red saga where the differences between the english & translated subtitles are not that great.

I put the enjoyment level for Baba saga English dialogue in terms of wit, camp & kitsch as the first 13 episodes of Dragonball. And I would put it to you that the differences in the english & translated subtitle makes this & other dragonball dvds worth it vs HK subtitles. In addition, these differences makes you wonder whether you are getting an accurate translations, especially the RANMA 1/2 dvds which only have 1 set of english subtitles which match the english dialogue.

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorite sections of Dragon Ball!.......2004-03-12

When Goku loses the location to the final dragon ball, he and the rest of the gang are forced to visit the Turtle Hermit's psychic sister to help find it. Of course there is a price, and Toriyama (the author) delivers with an over the top tournament involving the Invisible man, Dracula, the mummy, and the Devil, who fights in a giant toilet (you'll have to see it to understand)! The grand finale is one of the top 5 fights in Dragonball history. Definitely recommended, one scene even shows Bulma's breasts. Cartoon boobs are cool! Buy this now!

4 out of 5 stars Arduous search for the last Dragon Ball.......2003-12-09

For those of you who bought the Commander Red saga, it seems a bit unfair that the last episode of this set would leave us hanging in the midst of a crucial battle. Kind of like the end of the first (Saiyan) saga of DBZ that saved the decisive victory over Vegeta until the first episode of the second (Namek) saga. Anyway, Goku is still struggling against the last holdout in the Red Ribbon fortress, the wily, disgruntled Assistant Black. Seems that Red pushed Black a bit too far and Black shot him in the head. It's kind of refreshing to see the smart black guy take down the stupid white guy. Black is still a bad guy, so Goku will beat him, even though Black is driving a mecha.
However, the main part of this DVD centers around the search for the last Dragon Ball needed to bring Bora back to life. I won't tell you who has it, only that it's someone who's given Goku a bit of trouble before. The one who can tell Goku and Co. where the Dragon Ball is none other than Master Roshi's "big" sister, Baba. DBZ fans have seen Baba before; she's the little witch who floats around on a crystal ball. Baba charges a VERY steep price for her fortunes, but those who can't pay can beat her fighters instead. Of course, you know what Goku does to get the fortune. The fighters are silly looking but tough, particularly the one who wears the bunny mask. You'll see why Goku has such a hard time with Mr. Bunny Mask when you watch this DVD.

5 out of 5 stars Short and Sweet- Not your typical Dragon Ball GT.......2007-08-08

Looking at the cover for this movie, I bought it thinking that I would get the proper dosage of over-the-top action that defines DBGT.
Boy, was I glad to be wrong.
The cover is simply packed with lies, as to this is not an action-packed Chop Socky-fest. Instead, it focuses on Goku Jr., a decendant of (who else?) Goku, who's trying to find the 4-star Dragon Ball to save Pan, who is his grandmother. Along the way he encounters a hot bluish-green chick who wants to eat him, and teams up with a bully who's tormented him for ages.
No long, drawn-out fights here, just good storytelling and character development.
While there are plot inconsistincies (where in the heck are Goku Jr.'s parents?), this is a nice way to end Dragon Ball. Entirely worth the cash.

4 out of 5 stars An excellent TV special.......2007-08-08

Dragon Ball GT: A Hero's Legacy

FUNimation's box art is wrong. This is a TV special, not a movie.

    INTRODUCTION:
The Dragon Ball franchise is one of the finest anime series in the world. The series, created as a manga by Akira Toriyama in 1984, has always been popular, and it isn't hard to see why - interesting characters, cool locales, and intriguing plotlines. However, Dragon Ball GT, the third and final chapter in the trilogy, was NOT created by Toriyama and generated a very mixed reaction from fans. To accompany the series, a single TV special, set one hundred years later, aired during the initial run.

    OVERVIEW (RELEASES):
This is the GT TV special, which aired on Japanese TV in 1996 during the initial run of GT.

    OVERVIEW (MOVIE):
This special is set 100 years after GT takes place, but PRIOR to the very end of GT with the "100 years later tournament" scene. Goku Jr., Pan's grandson, is a far cry from his several-generations-ago grandfather who has long since passed on. He's a wimp and a weakling who is bullied constantly, But when his grandmother falls ill, he sets out on a journey to Mount Paozu, to retrieve his ancestor's magical Dragon Ball, in an effort to cure his grandmother.

    REVIEW (MOVIE):
Not bad. I actually preferred this special to most of the actual GT anime. From start to finish, with its emphasis on adventure, this felt more like an episode of the original Dragon Ball than anything GT related. It's got its share of touching moments and action scenes. But if you're looking for DBZ/late GT-style action-filled combat, this movie may not be for you. Just the same I enjoyed it, and feel it's a nice addition to the catalogue. Thumbs up.

    OVERALL:
Excellent special. Well worth adding to your collection if you're a fan.

    EDITION NOTES:
FUNimaton released an uncut DVD with Jap and Eng versions.

4 out of 5 stars An interesting experience.......2006-08-06

I've been a Dragonball fan for a while now, and this has to be the most interesting dragonball movie yet. This brings back the adventurous quality that was found in the "Lost Episodes" of Dragon Ball GT, or the Dragonball series as a whole. Its an enjoyable experience, but the main character, Son Goku (Not the one we all know, his Great great Grandson) is a bit of a wimp, which is disappointing to see.

Overall, if you want a good anime experience, or you just like Dragonball, this movie is worth watching again and again

    3 out of 5 stars Make a sequal.......2006-05-30

First of all this isn't a bad movie but it just could have been a lot better. The movie is about Goku J.R the granson of Pan who is a adult now. Pan wants Goku J.R to get stronger and stand up to pepole. However Goku J.R isn't really strong and gets picked on by bullys and gets his stuff stolen. After Pan hears about it she is outraged and tells him to beacome stronger but then she has heart failer and has great chances of diying. Goku J.R decides to save his grandma and goes to find the Dragon Balls to save pan. On the road Goku J.R meets the bully who picked on him after being tricked by a truck driver they seet of to help eachother a meet a lady who lets them stay at her house. But, this lady was really a monster who attacks them but Goku J.R and his friend escape. After being scared to help his friend at a bridge his friend falls after the bridge beacomes lose and dies. Goku J.R is sad but it will take me to long to tell the rest of the movie but the movie dosn't have enough action and a little more bit of drama. This is great if you like drama anmie but if you like action you might want to check out the Dragon Ball GT series. A ok movie but they should make a sequal.

4 out of 5 stars Finally, uncut DB on DVD.......2006-09-30

    Dragon Ball (1986.)

    INTRODUCTION:
It was in 1984 in Shonen Jump Magazine that manga artist Akira Toriyama premiered his next big thing - Dragon Ball. Toriyama, best known at the time for his previous series Dr. Slump, had created a new series based on the classic legend, Journey to the West - but with his own unique spin on things. It wasn't long before the manga became a phenomenon and inspired a long-running anime series. And now, at long last, FUNimation has released the Dragon Ball anime in America, uncensored! Read on for my review.

    OVERVIEW:
The Dragon Ball anime series, based on the manga, was first created in 1986. The anime consists of over a hundred episodes, and takes place prior to the more popular sequel series, Dragon Ball Z. The DVD released have broken the series into eleven volumes: Pilaf, Tournament, Red Ribbon, General Blue, Commander Red, Fortuneteller Baba, Tien Shinhan, King Piccolo 1, King Piccolo 2, Piccolo Jr. 1, and Piccolo Jr. 2. The Pilaf saga has not been released uncensored, however, as an earlier dubbing company still retains the DVD rights. Each set is two discs, and features an uncut dub and sub track, plus some modest bonus features.

    STORYLINE:
Dragon Ball is the precursor to the considerably more popular sequel series, Dragon Ball Z. When the series begins, Goku is a young boy and befriends Bulma, the smart-but-spoiled city girl. The two set off on an adventure to gain the Dragon Balls - mythical crystal balls, that when all seven are gathered, will grant a person any one wish they desire. While the series starts off on an adventure/comedy tone, it fast shifts more toward the action end of the spectrum. As the series progresses, Goku meets many other characters - Oolong, a perverted pig who can change his shape, Master Roshi, the incredibly powerful (and equally lecherous) martial arts master, Yamcha, a former desert bandit turned good guy, Krillin, Goku's fellow martial arts student who always lives in Goku's shadow, and a variety of others. In a number of cases, Goku's foes become his friends and fight alongside him in later episodes. The series progresses on for over a hundred episodes, before Dragon Ball Z begins.

    REVIEW OF SERIES:
Dragon Ball is an amazing series. Adventure, comedy, action, romance (to a lesser extent) - pretty much everything you could want in a series, Dragon Ball serves it up over and over again. Toriyama's characters are incredible, and certainly evolve over the course of the series to keep things interesting. While I don't quite like the original series as well as the more popular Z series (most fans share this opinion), it is still awesome, and it's a shame that it has to live in the shadow of the more popular sequel. Even if you've already seen Z, it's worth going back and watching the original Dragon Ball - you get to explore the origins of many of the characters (and if you have only seen Z but never the original, you'll be in for a shock at how many of Goku's allies used to be his enemies!) Regardless of who you are, Dragon Ball is well worth checking out.

    REVIEW OF DVD:
Let's not sugar coat it. FUNimation's DVD releases of the DBZ series are crap. They charge twenty-five bucks for a measly three episodes and no extras other than trailers - totally unforgivable even if the episodes are uncut.

To put it bluntly, FUNimation has handled the original series WAY better.

Each one of these sets is around thirty-five to forty dollars, and in these sets you get usually somewhere between twelve and eighteen episodes! A much better value than those rip-off Z sets. The menus are well designed and easy to navigate.

However, the extra features are just about as lacking as the Z DVDs. They're a slight step up but nothing major.

Likewise the picture quality is not the greatest, but it's about as good as you can do for a twenty-year-old cartoon, so that isn't really FUNimation's fault.

    THE DUB:
Anyone who knows me knows damn well I am not a fan of FUNimation's dubbing of the Dragon Ball series, be it the original series or Z. Fortunately, their redubbing of the original series isn't terrible. It's butchered in a few places, and I won't deny that - a major change being that Master Roshi's pervertedness is toned down severely. However, it's definitely a better dub job than they did for Z. Still, I'll be sticking with my sub track.

    OVERALL:
Overall, I am very satisfied with the DVD releases of the original Dragon Ball - more more so than I am with the Dragon Ball Z DVD releases. Why didn't FUNimation give this same treatment to the Z series? Oh, well. These sets are Dragon Ball done right. If you're a fan, don't hesitate to pick them up.

    EDITION NOTES:
These sets are fairly recent releases, and as such, most major video/multimedia stores tend to have most of the sets in stock.

    5 out of 5 stars A new begianing.......2006-02-07

This is the saga were dragon ball starts to turn into dragon ball z becuse everyone grows up.Anyway the saga starts out with everyone meating for the wrold tournamet untill they realize that king piccolos son piccolo is thare and has his sights on goku to kill him.Not only that gokus friends are thare we also get to see chi chi genral tao and some new fighters.Thare are not alot of really strong battles in here but thare are some godd fights still. The thing that was kinda bad was most of the humor was gone which made me a little disaponited.Anyway this still chould have been a better saga but it is still good.

3 out of 5 stars not near as good as part 2, still okay though.......2005-03-25

this dvd does not have any heated battles, the sound is not all that great and animation is a bit crumbly, but that is because it was originally made in the 80's. everybody grows up in this dvd, which saves it from a 2 out of 5. but it is DB and the story is okay. part 2 is way better.

5 out of 5 stars Its Bomb Diggity Fresh.......2004-12-12

I just bought the Uncut version and the episodes are really good it shows where piccolo comes from and there is a really good tournament with Goku vs. Piccolo I really recommend you buy this DVD its great if you have any questions please e-mail me at gunitsoldier671@aol.com

3 out of 5 stars Disappointing quality, but good DB episodes.......2004-12-05

I just purchased this DVD set, and I thought it average. Of course I would only watch the subbed Japanese version, and I was disappointed both with the grainy picture quality and the sound quality (which is in mono, not stereo). Some of the subs were off, and there were a few misspellings (like "alright" instead of "All right" or "earned" instead of "learned"). In one episode in particular, I found that the subbers were pulling an old (and annoying) Funimation trick - replacing the original dialogue with their own creation (like putting in "Man!" or "Totally radical!"). The overall quality, though, is better than the 45 MB fansubbed episodes I had downloaded awhile back, which is why I purchased this DVD set. The "extras" are nothing to write home about, but I was interested in the actual episodes anyways.

5 out of 5 stars Goku's back in action, just when things go to Cell!.......2005-04-19

If you want me to be honest, I really didn't care for the Cell saga overall. However, that is not to say I didn't enjoy some parts, and this is definitely one of them, namely the much anticipated and long-awaited fight between Son Goku and Cell himself! Last volume featured the warm-up, but now things get serious as Goku battles the deadly android that not only has all of his powers, but also his friends' and foes'! But things really get insane when Cell decides to throw the rules of his own tournament out the window, forcing Goku to go to the extreme in an attempt to defeat him! Can he win? The DVD features some of the best fighting I've seen in the series, and best of all costs much less than the usual volumes, thus making it more affordable. Another good volume, one that I definitely suggest adding to your collection!

    5 out of 5 stars A Worthy Addition.......2004-07-14

The long awaited rounds of the Cell Games, with the aid of time, finally find their home on DVD. This particular DVD contains the decisive battle between Goku and Cell. With the exception of the first (and poorly animated) episode, the disk ascends the series to levels never seen before, and in some cases never seen again. The fight moves at astounding rates, leaving you wishing it could last longer, but that's why we have Gohan. In addition, Funimation finally provides us with a reasonable price tag. If you slept on the Cell Games thus far, immerse yourself, because you won't regret it.

5 out of 5 stars Some of the best Fight Scenes.......2004-07-07

In my opion the cell games is by far the greatest saga in DBZ and this dvd is no exception. On this dvd u see goku fighting cell with everything he has got these are three exellent episodes of fighting and tension for all those who enjoy the fighting. i Rate this for any DBZ fan

    The three episodes are:
Cells bag of tricks - Cells use his stolen abilites on goku will it work
No more Rules - Cell destroys the ring to continue his fight with goku till there is one man standing
The fight is over - Goku thinks the fight is over after blasting cell with a kamea kamea blast or is it

5 out of 5 stars Let the fighting begin..........2004-07-01

Finally the main event in the Cell Games gets underway, Goku vs. Cell.
In the first episode: Cell's Bag of Tricks - Cell uses all of the Z fighters moves to try to stop Goku, but will it work?
The second episode: No more Rules - The ring gets destroyed by Cell, now the fight will end with only one left standing, Who will it be?
The Last episode on the DVD: The Fight is Over: What looks to be a very nice victory is cut short and Goku is running out of energy, with this said a new Z fighter is about to enter the fight as Goku steps down, Who is it?
The rest of the Cell Games now will have plenty of fighting and finally it will all be avaiable on DVD, I recommend this DVD as well as the rest, you won't be disappointed.
