By now, Bond pictures are as elegantly formal as a Bach chorale, and this one opens on an unusually powerful note. A stunning pre-title sequence reaches beyond mere pyrotechnics to introduce key plot elements as the action leaps from Bilbao to London. Bond 5.0, Pierce Brosnan, undercuts his usually suave persona with a darker, more brutal edge largely absent since Sean Connery departed. Equally tantalizing are our initial glimpses of Bond's nemesis du jour, Renard (Robert Carlyle), and imminent love interest, Elektra King (Sophie Marceau), both atypically complex characters cast with seemingly shrewd choices, and directed by the capable Michael Apted. The story's focus on post-Soviet geopolitics likewise starts off on a savvy note, before being overtaken by increasingly Byzantine plot twists, hidden motives, and reversals of loyalty superheated by relentless (if intermittently perfunctory) action sequences.

Indeed, the procession of perils plays like a greatest hits medley, save for a nifty sequence involving airborne buzz saws that's as enjoyable as it is preposterous. Bond's grimmer demeanor, while preferable to the smirk that eventually swallowed Roger Moore whole, proves wearying, unrelieved by any true wit. The underlying psychoses that propel Renard and Elektra eventually unravel into unconvincing melodrama, while Bond is supplied with a secondary love object, Denise Richards, who's even more improbable as a nuclear physicist. Ultimately, this World is not enough despite its better intentions. --Sam Sutherland

One of Brosnan's better Bond films.......2006-11-26

Pierce Brosnan is back and has to save the world from a mad man once again. Robert Carlyle is really good as that mad man and is one of the best Bond villians in my book. You also have Sophie Marceau and Denise Richards as two sexy Bond girls. Most Bond fans just mostly picked on the film due to Denise Richards acting abilities. Which are limited. I never had much of a problem with her, I guess I was too busy looking at her and not watching her acting abilities as closely as other Bond fans lol.

I do think Brosnan's Bond films did try too hard in casting Bond women though. I mean most of them were too recognizeabke and just casted on looks basically. I think Goldeneye had the best casting though of any of his films. I mean I don't even know what else that Bond girl was in after Goldeneye or before it for that matter and she could act too. I do like the casting of Sophie Marceau here more than the Denise Richards casting though. Not only because she's a better actor but because she doesn't stick out like a sore thumb. I mean I just know her from a bad David Spade film.

Anyway I think The World is Not Enough is one of Brosnan's better outings as Bond. It's surely better than Tomorrow Never Dies. Plus I think Robert Carlyle is as memorable as a Bond villian as Sean Bean in GoldenEye. I don't know why people talk about the villian in Die Another Day like he was the best of the Brosnan films, he did nothing for me really. Brosnan doesn't shine here as much as he does in GoldenEye but I do find his line at the end both crude and funny and he delivers it well. Denise Richards' name is Christmas and he says somthing like "Christmas doesn't come once a year"....lol.

Most Embarrassing Bond Movie Ever.......2006-11-18

This is simply the worst Bond movie ever, also included, the worst Bond Girl ever - that being Denise Richards. Denise was not glamorous or smart as past Bond girls, essentially if she were left out of the story no one would have noticed. She looked like some chick Bond picked up from the mall, denim jacket included, who just provided unnecessary commentary. The story was disjointed and hopes that it would go anywhere and went no where. M is kidnapped, yeah, that had nothing nor any relevance to the story. This movie seemed rushed to produce and you can tell.

Bond films seem very critic proof since they're not meant to move you to tears and they're not meant to be laugh riots or creep into your skin. They're action movies pure and simple and arguably no one does it better. But seeing as how we're already on Bond 19 and while it's not that the series has completely run out of ideas, there is a sameness and familiarity to it all that prevents it from being the best Bond it can be. Doesn't mean that the filmmakers don't try really hard though.

After the killing of oil tycoon Robert King, 007 James Bond is hired to protect his daughter, beautiful Elektra. The main villain orchestrating everything is Renard, a man who was shot in the head and affecting his brain so that he can't actually feel pain, although the bullet will eventually kill him. Bond has to team with nuclear physicist Christmas Jones (Bond girls have had pretty strange names but this is just stupid) in order to avert a world-threatening plan (natch).

First, the casting: Sophie Marceau personally is my choice for the hottest Bond girl but acting-wise it's very extreme from one end to the next without any in-betweens. And Denise Richards is arguably the biggest miscast I've seen in a film. As for Pierce Brosnan, well this is #3 for him so he's still as suave and Bond-esque with the action hero coming into play whenever he needs to. As for the villain, Robert Carlyle is one of those Bond baddies where the premise is there but he's just not as compelling, in fact he seems kind of wimpy.

The Bond series lately has been going for that bigger is badder approach but there's a couple of goodies: the opening with a big boat chase is one of my favorite openers in the series but then we have a kind of meh ski escape as well as Bond versus a helicopter with sawblades attached which is as exciting as it is preposterous. But that's what's expected with any Bond film so I don't even mind anymore but there's almost a too over-the-topness to it as if the films tried to eclipse Bond wannabe films of late.

Is it the best Bond? No. The best Brosnan film? No. But it's a solid if very faulty Bond. I'd recommend it anyway though.

Great Movie!.......2006-05-31

This is a pretty exciting movie. I have to say Pierce Bronsan makes the best James Bond, even better than Sean Connery in older James Bond movies. Some of the top action scenes include the Boat Chase, James Bond and Electra King(a very beautiful woman) getting chased while skiing and the helicopter scene. The basic story is that James Bond is sent to protect an oil heiress, whom unknown forces are trying to kill.

Bond thinks it is because they don't want competition from her Oil pipeline. However, the story takes a surprise twist that most won't see coming. For that reason I give this movie 5 stars; for this unusual twist that is not there in other Bond movies.

Smorgasbord For Bond Fans.......2007-07-07

While it may be assumed that those looking to buy a box set of James Bond films have already seen them all and formed a favorable opinion of them, that's not necessarily true. For instance, I had previously seen none of these, but had seen enough other Bond films to want to acquire them all and so I started with this set.
Like several other reviewers, I was at first annoyed that they were not presented in chronological order. But then, the rightful profit motive of Eon Productions is immediately transparent. If they had been issued in chronological order, then those who preferred one Bond over another might be likely to buy only the set with their favorite in them. By presenting them in seemingly random order, Bond fans will have to get them all. Beyond thirst for profit, Eon Productions has done the fan a favor. The Ultimate Edition series is truly a smorgasbord for Bond fans. In order for the fan to get his money's worth, he will be forced to reevaluate his original opinion of a Bond film by having to watch it a second time. If the viewer follows the sequence of the random order, he can then usefully compare and contrast the films either to reaffirm his old view or form a new one altogether.
I like all the films in this set to varying degrees. Some of them sometimes rely too much on gadgetry and loads of sexual innuendo to carry them, but they all do what they are supposed to do: entertain. While Goldfinger is often cited by critics as the benchmark by which all other Bond films are to be judged, its not my favorite here. Here's my list of favorites from most to least:
1) The Living Daylights: That surprised me because Timothy Dalton is far less famous as James Bond than any except perhaps George Lazenby. Great action, exotic locales, obligitory evil villains and a luscious Maryam D'Abo as Bond's latest love interest. The scenes in Afghanistan are of topical interest because we are now there instead of the Russians. My favorite action sequence is the thrilling chase of Bond and defecting cellist Kara Milovy (D'Abo) through the snow by Czech troops and their subsequent escape into Austria from Czechoslovakia. Next I enjoyed Bond's thrilling fight with his nemesis while clinging to a cargo net dangling precariously from a plane flying high over the Afghan desert. The fight scene in the truck as it careens down a narrow mountain road on Gibraltar is no slouch, either. This one is an under-rated gem.
2)The Man With the Golden Gun: Good story and acting although the martial arts scenes were somewhat cartoonish. Roger Moore makes an excellent Bond here and Christopher Lee as Francisco Scaramanga is delightfully wicked. I was surprised that to see that Scaramanga is not actually played by an Italian, because in the film his character has very classically Italian features. Britt Ekland as Goodnight is attractive, but her character is ditzy and often "dumb blonde". Even when she does something right, she somehow screws up. My favorite scene is the chase through the canals of Bangkok followed by the frantic effort to escape Scaramanga's disintegrating hideaway before it detonates.
Herve Villechaize adds much to the menace of the film with his cunning portrayal of the not-so-loyal Scaramanga flunkey Nick Nack.
3)Diamonds Are Forever: Sean Connery is back as Bond and in top form. Its another good but improbable story. The film is filled with appropriately evil villains who have the wits to nearly match those of Bond, another beauty in Jill St John, and more silly names to snicker at: Blofeld and Plenty O'Toole. My favorite scene is the moonbuggy chase through the desert followed closely by the scene in the mortuary where Bond was nearly cremated. Plenty of gags, a couple of wise-cracking gay assassins and sly innuendo will keep you laughing.
4)Goldfinger: Here's an early look at Sean Connery as Bond. Suave, debonair, a real ladies man yet ever ready to meet danger. Bond insinuates himself into the affairs of super-tycoon Auric Goldfinger and just happens to overhear the name of his masterplan. What that plan entailed, Bond was soon to find out, and what follows is a non-stop sequence of action-packed thrills. There are plenty of interesting gadgets though fewer here than in some of the later films. There are the silly names Auric (=AU=gold) and Pussy Galore which though likely tittilating at the time of the film's release now sounds lame. My favorite scene is the climax of the film when the battle is on for Fort Knox. Auric Goldfinger's plot comes close to succeeding, but you know it won't.
5)The World Is Not Enough: A very improbable story line, but not impossible. The film has great topical appeal even today considering on-going oil supply worries. There is action aplenty, of course. I like the helicopters that use huge saws to cut through every obstacle. The best scenes are the early ski chase and then the later battle on the ramshackle oil piers of the Caspian Sea. Villains abound and who is friend or foe not always clear. And of course, Bond always gets the girl(s) one way or the other.
The biggest question to ask yourself before buying the set is "will I get my money's worth?". The answer to that is a resounding yes. Even if you don't like one of the films, Eon Productions gives you added incentive to buy the set by adding discs filled with extras for each of the movies. This is one instance when you are better off buying the box set rather than each movie individually. Now that I've thoroughly enjoyed the James Bond Ultimate Edition-Volume 1, its on to Volume 2!

Fabulous Restoration Makes Bond Collection a Must!.......2007-06-09

Although 'Deluxe' Bond editions have appeared, in recent years, the new 'frame-by-frame' restorations make "James Bond Ultimate Edition - Vol. 1" ESSENTIAL, if you are a fan of the 007 films!

The title selections may be head scratchers, but the pristine quality of each film offers a look and sound that is breathtaking!

"The Man with the Golden Gun" (1974), Roger Moore's second outing as 007, suffers from the decline into campiness that would plague many of his films; targeted by hit man Christopher Lee, Bond journeys to Asia to track him down, aided by annoying Britt Ekland and ridiculous redneck sheriff Clifton James. While Maud Adams is lovely, and Thailand, breathtaking, Hervé Villechaize is silly, and the attempt to incorporate the kung fu craze, while amusing, turns 007 into a joke. Add an awful theme song, and you have a major disappointment! (2 stars out of 5)

"Goldfinger" (1964), for many fans, the 'perfect' Bond film, kicked off the 60's worldwide 007 craze; piggy meglamaniac Gert Frobe plans to nuke Fort Knox, and it's up to 007 Sean Connery, at his sexiest, to stop him. Fabulous women (Honor Blackman and Shirley Eaton), a superhuman henchman (Harold Sakata), an unforgettable theme song (sung by Shirley Bassey), and spectacular action makes this one solid gold. (5 stars out of 5).

"The World Is Not Enough" (1999), Pierce Brosnan's third 007 outing, is, arguably, his best; assigned to protecting sexy oil heiress Sophie Marceau from terrorist Robert Carlyle, Bond discovers nothing is as it seems! Offering Judi Dench's finest performance as M, and more plot twists than usual, one can almost forgive buxom Denise Richards' one-note portrayal, and the series' decline into derivativeness. (4 stars out of 5).

"Diamonds Are Forever" (1971), best-known as Sean Connery's 'comeback' as 007 after a one-film hiatus (and his final Eon Bond film), the film marks the beginning of the 'comic' Bond films of the '70s. Villain Charles Gray, as a sly, droll Blofeld, launches a diamond-powered laser satellite to blackmail the world. Shot largely in Las Vegas, Connery is graying and paunchy, Jill St. John, sexy, but ditzy, and one-liners and brainless action dominates the plot. Funny, but quite a letdown from "On Her Majesty's Secret Service". (3 1/2 stars out of 5)

"The Living Daylights" (1987), Timothy Dalton's debut as 007, is best remembered, today, as the film Pierce Brosnan would have starred in, had NBC not renewed "Remington Steele". The silliness of Moore's Bond is gone, as a more serious Dalton falls for cellist/would-be assassin (Maryam d'Abo), and uncovers an arms plot involving three villains (Jeroen Krabbé, Joe Don Baker, and Andreas Wisniewski). An Afghan/Soviet war subplot 'dates' the story, and the film, released in the same year as "Lethal Weapon" and "Batman", would not be a hit, but time has proven it to be a superior 007 outing. (4 stars out of 5).

Even if you've seen these films, I recommend this new collection; Bond films have never 'looked' better!

James Bond Vol. 1.......2007-05-19

The first James Bond movie that I saw was "Goldfinger". It was great. I wanted to see them all. Now I can with these great box sets. A lot of people don't like them because they're not in order. I like them that way. It gives you a good mixture. Let's get on to the reviews for all the movies in Vol. 1.

Goldfinger- This is the first James Bond movie that I saw. It is great. Sean Connery IS James Bond. If you've never seen a James Bond movie, watch this one first. 5 stars

Diamonds Are Forever- This one is great. It returns Sean Connery as James Bond. 5 stars

The Man with the Golden Gun- This one is pretty good. It stars Roger Moore as James Bond. I've always wanted to see this one. Now that I have, I am very happy. 5 stars

The Living Daylights- This has a weird title, but it is still good. It is the first James Bond movie with Timothy Dalton playing Bond. He is pretty good. 5 stars.

The World is Not Enough- This one is really good. I always like Pierce Brosnan as James Bond. He is excellent in his second to last movie as James Bond. 5 stars.

Overall, this recieves 5 stars.

Thank goodness for these sets.......2007-05-15

These four JB sets are the perfect way to get your Bond fix in enormous doses. The special features are great and the quality of the picture is unbeatable. My only small quibble is that the setup of the DVD menus is sort of obnoxious, but that seems to be the way of DVDs these days. If you are a Bond fan, or if you have a Bond fan in your home and want to give him an amazing gift (I did), these aren't to be missed.

Finally, sets that do the Bond legacy justice.......2007-03-31

James Bond Ultimate Collection.

INTRODUCTION:
When it comes to film franchises, very few measure up to Ian Fleming's legendary secret agent, James Bond. For decades this series has never failed to entertain. With girls, guns, gadgets, and everything in between, the series rarely fails to please. The franchise has been through many highs and lows in its several-decade history, and numerous collections of the films have been released over the years. In 2006, MGM released four Ultimate Collections.

OVERVIEW:
The James Bond Ultimate Collection consists of four box sets, each including ten discs - five films and a bonus disc for each. The boxes' content are as follows:
-Volume One (Gold): Goldfinger (1963), Diamonds Are Forever (1971), The Man With The Golden Gun (1974), The World Is Not Enough (1999)
-Volume Two (Blue): Thunderball (1965), The Spy Who Loved Me (1977), A View To A Kill (1985), Licence To Kill (1989), Die Another Day (2002)
-Volume Three (Red): From Russia With Love (1963), On Her Majesty's Secret Service (1969), Live and Let Die (1973), For Your Eyes Only (1981), Goldeneye (1995)
-Volume Four (Silver): Dr. No (1962), You Only Live Twice (1967), Moonraker (1979), Octopussy (1983), Tomorrow Never Dies (1997)

Note that these are sets of the official EON productions films. As such, non-EON productions such as the David Niven/Peter Sellers version of Casino Royale and Thunderball remake Never Say Never Again are not included.

REVIEW:
I'm not going to go through and review each individual film (that's what the movies' individual Amazon pages are for), I'm just gonna focus on the box sets and their execution here. Here is a list of the pros and cons for every set.

-THE GOOD-
-ALL TWENTY FILMS READILY AVAILABLE ON DVD AGAIN. It's been a long time since we've been able to get the movies on DVD, and it's about time they got reissued. Finally, this shortage has reached its end.
-A QUICK AND EASY WAY TO COMPLETE YOUR BOND COLLECTION. You could hunt down each individual film, and spend a lot more money and do a lot more searching. Or you could just get these four sets. Much quicker and easier.
-A BONUS DISC OF MATERIAL FOR EVERY MOVIE! If you're a Bond fanatic, you're going to get a kick out of all the extra material MGM gives you in these sets. Deleted scenes, trailers, interviews with cast and crew, these bonus discs are pure gold for you if you're a Bond die hard like me.
-REMASTERED. VERY WELL. Normally I don't mention remastering of movies in my reviews, as it's usually a rather shoddy job that does little to improve the picture quality. NOT THIS TIME. MGM has given us the films with FRAME BY FRAME RESTORATION. If you thought earlier issues of Bond films on DVD had crappy picture quality, MGM redeems themselves here. This is, hands down, THE GREATEST FILM REMASTERING JOB I HAVE EVER SEEN. Even Dr. No, the first Bond film, has stunningly beautiful picture quality! My hat goes off to MGM here. This is reason alone to buy the sets, even if you own the older boxes.
-SUPERIOR TO THE OLD DVD BOXES OF THE SERIES. Everything they did, these sets do better. Picture, extras, you name it, this set does it better.

-THE BAD-
-STILL NOT IN CHRONOLOGICAL ORDER. This has been under hot debate from Bond fans as long as boxes of the films have been on the market. MGM clearly wants to make a few bucks. Let's face it, if all of the Connery films were in one set, everyone would buy that set and no others. Rather than getting the films in chronological order, we get uneven and scattershot mixes. For instance, the fourth box set features Dr. No and You Only Live Twice, two of the masterpieces of the series. But the set is dragged down by two of the major stinkers in the series, Moonraker and Octopussy. With every set it's this same "balancing act" phenomenon, with great films and weak ones alike. I must admit, a rather ingenious marketing strategy on MGM's part, but not what fans want (of course, you can do like I did and buy all the sets and make your own box and put them in order.) Fortunately, this is the ONLY major flaw of these sets.

OVERALL:
When it comes to the Bond films on DVD, "Nobody Does It Better" than MGM with these box sets. Beautiful picture and sound, extras galore, and all twenty films readily available again, there's no reason not to own these if you're a Bond fan. Even if you already have a few films on DVD or some of the older sets, these are still worth getting for the picture quality and bonus features alone.

Sean Connery casts a long shadow over the James Bond legacy. Roger Moore took over the role and his fourth effort was Moonraker, a misguided sci-fi entry that takes Bond to space for a physically impressive but dramatically lackluster adventure with Richard Kiel's steel-dentured Jaws. After that brief digression, For Your Eyes Only returned Bond to globetrotting high adventure and teamed him with his most endearing ally (Topol as a gregarious smuggler). The torch was passed to Timothy Dalton in The Living Daylights, an attempt to clear away the camp elements of Moore's portrayal and return to a lean, hard-edged spy thriller for the post-cold war era. It lacks the larger-than-life characters and spectacle of previous Bond pictures, but Dalton was a tough, ruthless 007 and a worthy inheritor of the legacy, which was then passed on to Pierce Brosnan. In The World Is Not Enough, Bond takes on post-Soviet geopolitics, with Robert Carlyle as the villainous Renard and Sophie Marceau and Denise Richards as love objects.

Good Set, but Wow $$$$.......2006-11-29

Let me start off by saying that this collection has some good points. Those good points are From Russia with Love, a great Sean Connery movie, For Your Eyes Only which a pretty good Roger Moore film, and (many may disagree with me on this one) my favorite Brosnan Bond, The World is Not Enough. The other films in this collection are ok, but I don't think there is any film in the Bond series that I really dislike. Now that being said, DON'T PURCHASE THIS SET. I don't know who the people are that are reviewing this with 5 stars and saying great low price, but I wonder if they are the ones trying to sell them. My problems with this set is the picture and sound quality. They are what you would expect on a movie from the era each film was produced. The older Connery Bond movies look like your watching them on 1960's film. The other problem I have with these sets are the prices. To purchase this set used will cost you about $170, the price new is over $200. There is no reason to pay that much for this set. I would recommend if you are looking for the Bond collection to purchase the Ultimate Editions (UEs). The movies have been restored so picture quality is great. The UEs are also set in 5.1 surround sound, and the special features are great. Also the price of the UE compared to this set is a lot better, when you consider that you can purchase all 4 of the UE for about the same price this Vol 2 will cost you. In sort if you want the Bond movies, buy the Ultimate Editions.

3 Repeats in This Series!!!.......2006-09-04

I just bought James Bond Collection, Vol. 2 for my brother and much to my surprise found that THREE of the titles were also in Vol. 1 of the series (which he has). What a rip-off! Paid over $100.00 for 3 new discs. Very disappointing.

A great mix of Bond movies.......2006-08-19

This is my favorite of the 3 Special Edition boxsets. For one thing, it's got 3 great Connery movies: "From Russia With Love" (007 tries to get a Russian decoding machine while surviving a SPECTRE trap); "You Only Live Twice" (007 in Japan must take on SPECTRE, which has been kidnapping spaceships to start war between the USSR and the USA); and "Diamonds Are Forever" (classic Connery 007, in Las Vegas tracking a diamond smuggling trail that leads to Blofeld). I find all those Connery ones entertaining, and YOLT and DAF are two of my personnal favorites, both very entertaining and with great settings. Next, there are two Roger Moore flicks: "Moonraker" (007 goes onto a space station to stop a madman from destroying the world); and "For Your Eyes Only" (007 must recover a stolen piece of technology). "Moonraker" is a bit silly, but I'll admit I find it to be entertaining and I enjoy it more than most Moore films. And "FYEO" is my favorite Moore film, the most hard edged and realistic. There's also a Timothy Dalton film, "The Living Daylights" (007 must stop a group of Soviet renegades from smuggling heroin). It's Dalton's first film, and he's my second favorite, next to Connery. Dalton's Bond is more dark and serious, yet "TLD" is still a good thriller. Finally, there's Pierce Brosnan's third outing, "The World Is Not Enough" (007 tries to stop a nuclear sub exploding and destroying much of the world's oil supply). "TWINE" is one of Brosnan's best, certainly better than his first two. Overall this boxset contains some of the lightest Bond movies, and some of the darkest, offering a good variety of styles and a good variety of Bonds.

For all the positive reviews, am I the only one who noticed that the cheapest you can get one of this box set for amounts to over $25 a movie? Maybe its just because it the holiday season and due to the amount of shopping impressed upon me at this time of year, but it occurs to me that this is rather outrageous.

Brosnans Best .......2007-06-07

This was my fist 007 film I got to see in the theaters, so needless to say I do have a little soft spot for it. Ever since that first viewing in 1999 I have loved it. The action scenes, the story, the acting, and the score are all just perfect. This has the most action of any other Bond film yet. Its packed and feels like it would never stop. Those scenes of action are done well and look very good. I loved the twists and turns with the story and the chemistry between Bond and Elektra. It keeps the film more dramatic and less like just another Bond film. Pierce was very comfortable in the role by this time. This is his best work as James Bond. Like noted, the music in the film is also top notch. David Arnolds best work as well. The title song by Garbage is my favorite title song in a 007 film yet. Like I said, I have a soft spot for this one. There is so much I love about it and very little I dont. In many ways its an underrated film, but I do see it get credit a lot. It deserves it. A great James Bond 007 film.

Running on Cruise Control.......2007-03-13

Pierce Brosnan returned in 1999 for his third appearance as James Bond in the 19th official Bond film. Brosnan was excellent as Bond in "Tomorrow Never Dies," and he was pretty good in this movie, but it seemed to me that churning out three movies in less than six years was causing a little fraying around the edges. This movie is just not as good as "Tomorrow Never Dies" and perhaps not even as good as "Goldeneye."

This Bond film begins just as Bond films always do, with Bond attempting to save someone. This time he has become involved in trying to rescue Elektra King (the stunningly beautiful Sophie Marceau). While Bond does not rescue Elektra (who soon after frees herself), Bond does recover the ransom money. It probably would have been better if Bond had not rescued the ransom money because it makes a big hole in MI-6's headquarters. An assassin nearly kills Bond, who then goes chasing the assassin about in Q's nicely appointed fishing boat. When I say nicely appointed, I mean rocket boost, torpedoes, a submarine mode, and a computer that has a cool mapping feature.

Once Bond stops chasing the assassin he learns that Elektra King is being threatened by a terrorist, along with her family's oil pipeline. At least, that is what appears to be the situation. Bond soon encounters danger as he tries to protect Elektra from terrorists. Bond encounters even more danger when he discovers that the terrorists plan to steal a nuclear weapon from Russia. While in Russia, Bond meets Christmas Jones (played by Denise Richards - their meeting generates one of the best jokes in the movie). The nuclear bomb soon shows up in the King pipeline. But wait, there's more! Some of the nuclear material is missing from the bomb (I will let the viewer discover how Bond learns that little tidbit). Bond is forced to learn what happened to the remaining nuclear material. During Bond's search for the remaining material he encounters one of the most nefarious weapons yet seen in a Bond film, a helicopter with a series of cutting blades that is supposed to be used for trimming trees.

The plot thickens and builds until a final encounter with terrorist Renard (Robert Carlyle) aboard a Russian submarine that is well on its way to going kaboom, which will ultimately contaminate a goodly portion of the Mediterranean.

This special edition two disk DVD includes a wealth of extras, a couple of audio tracks, multiple features and documentaries. The audio commentary by Michael Apted was somewhat lackluster, but the audio commentary by Peter Lamont (production designer), Vic Armstrong (second unit director) and David Arnold (composer) was good.

This Bond movie is not one of my favorites. While there are portions that I think are outstanding (specifically, the opening boat chase, the chase scene in the mountains, the helicopters with the tree trimming blades, and the scenes involving Q and John Cleese as R), this movie seems to have much less creativity overall than the previous few Bond movies. I am unable to fault Pierce Brosnan, who does very well. Perhaps after churning out two Bond movies in the previous four years the level of creativity was running low. I have to balance my comments a little by the six awards this movie won and the eight awards this movie was nominated for. However, one award and one nomination were for Razzie awards for Worst Supporting Actress (Denise Richards, who won) and Worst Screen Couple (Brosnan and Richards, but no winner this time).

In spite of the weakness of this movie, it did well in the box office, setting a new record for the opening weekend of a Bond film, and grossing more than any previous Bond movie. The main reason is that there is no such thing as a bad Bond film. There may be weak Bond films, but they are all watchable. The only question is how often you would like to watch them again.

This film does mark the passing of an era. Desmond Llewelyn passed away shortly after this film was released in the United States. We will forever miss Desmond and his explanations of his gadgets. While it is said that anyone can be replaced, the question that is usually not asked is how well they can be replaced. There was only one Desmond Llewelyn and while someone may take his function in the movies, they will not replace Desmond in our hearts.

I have this Bond film because it is a Bond film. Admittedly weaker than average, it remains one of the series and I have watched this one several times, and I will watch it again. Sometimes having all the movies in a series is more important than just having the best.

If you see only one Bond movie, DON'T see this one.......2007-02-05

I'm a fan of both the novels by Ian Fleming and the movies, and have been for decades. This movie in my opinion ranks 21st out of 21. It is just bad. The writers/producers by this time had finally run out of Fleming's stories and the other scraps of his works they'd managed to scrape together to form other movies, and the ideas they did come up with are not thrilling, not funny, not believable, and not good. It's as though they knew that the movie would bring in the money (which it did), and therefore no one really had to try at all. Especially Brosnan. He clearly makes that assumption, along with his added assumption that HE is why the movie will make money. Maybe he was partly right, but it's sad.

Good luck thinking of Denise Richards as having a doctorate in nuclear physics and being fluent in Russian without laughing yourself to tears. She can barely speak the lines, so she makes it hard to believe she can read, let alone any of the rest. There are many beautiful actresses who could have pulled this off, but Richards was apparently flavor of the month, or cheaper than the rest, or something.

Robert Carlyle has been good in other movies I have seen. He gets a break as a "Bond villain," and turns in a very poor performance. Performance? No, if someone shows up, stands where they are told, speaks when they are told and wears the costume they're given, I suppose you can say they "appear" in the movie. "Performing" means being more than a cardboard cut-out. I suppose an "appearance" was cheaper too.

If you are familiar at all with the rest of the Bond movies, particularly the good ones, or any good movie at all for that matter, you will find this one completely sub-par, and somewhat insulting to your intelligence and good taste.

Bond Character Reexamined .......2007-01-05

Occasionally in an action film series, one of its entries attempts to deal with the persona of its hero with equal intensity as it handles its central storyline. Such is the case with THE WORLD IS NOT ENOUGH. Director Michael Apted attempted to show James Bond's obsession for a woman, Sophie Marceau, for whom he had become intrigued with. Mishandled and mistreated by British Intelligence, Bond becomes enamored with her plight and tries to rectify it out of his attraction for her. Unfortunately this idea never came satisfactorily across upon this film's initial release. The change of pace to the Bond formula and Brosnan's desire to expand the depth of the James Bond character never seemed to come to fruition at the time. Somehow I think some of the action elements essential to this plotline got in the way. For instance, the opening sequence in Patrick Malahide's office demonstrates Bonds skills instantly take control a situation and an intensity to avenge the fate of a fellow operative. This is a great action scene and his driven emotional energy. In contradiction, the pipeline scene with Brosnan and Denise Richards is perfunctory and mundane and does not advance any of the complexities of Bond's character or plot of the film for that matter. Reexamining the film, I also see a complex relation between villain Robert Carlyle and Sophie Marceau and even Judi Dench as M and Sophie Marceau. This film abounds with complexities that were somehow overshadowed by the hype that surrounded it. It is another good Bond film. All that being said, Pierce Brosnan really has the part of James Bond down to an art and science in a rather ethereal fashion.

Indeed, the procession of perils plays like a greatest hits medley, save for a nifty sequence involving airborne buzz saws that's as enjoyable as it is preposterous. Bond's grimmer
