When Sultan Said discovers his wife locked in a passionate embrace with his only brother, he flings his sword at the prince and accidentally murders his adulterous queen. Tortured by his wife's ghost, the maniacal and cowardly sultan must marry another to save his kingdom, but to avoid future matrimonial disgrace he plans to have her executed the morning after the wedding. Fortunately for him, Scheherezade, the grand vicar's daughter played by the lovely Mili Avital, jumps at the challenge and the chance to marry her childhood love. A master storyteller, the newly crowned sultana escapes death night after night with her mesmerizing tales of Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves, Aladdin and his Magic Lamp, countless warriors, supernatural duels, and ferocious genies.
Although the main story line falls short of Scheherezade's seductive tales, audiences will be enchanted with fantastic special effects, elaborate costumes, and the magic of Persia. Wonderfully directed and edited by Steve Barron, Hallmark's Arabian Nights will particularly appeal to fans of magical computer-effects laden television miniseries. --Melissa Asher
Customer Reviews:
Good adventure.......2007-08-24
This is a well done production. Bought the DVD for my 10 yr old daughter, but she lost interest. I thought it was good however. The story gets a bit slow in places and it would have been nice if the comedy was bit better. However, this has been the best Arabian Nights film that I have seen so far and would recommend to anyone into this genre.
must watch for anyone interested in storytelling.......2007-08-03
I've watched this over and over again, so many times it's embarassing. I still can't believe this was made for TV. The costumes, sets, special effects . . . look as if it was a high budget blockbuster. Stories told within a story - the other reviews have the details already - well written to preserve the great teachings of the original and to entertain, the script is very funny though sometimes subtle. Excellent acting for the most part. I can't say enough good things.
awesome.......2007-07-31
it is like owning four movies in one. They tie all the stories together so nicely it is really worth owning and it is geatly priced
botched culture nights.......2007-04-19
Did anyone else find the glaring cultural mixups distracting? Interesting how they mixed Indian dance, Indian clothing, inauthentic clothing, English accents into this movie.
Arabian Nights .......2007-04-07
I'm 63 years old and never get tired of this movie. A pleasure to watch with a bowl of pop corn and my family. Mili Avital is enchanting and uses hers brain to keep the story going. Finally a movie where filthy language and sex aren't used to entertain the viewer. This movie has its silly moments and fantasy abounds. The special effects are really very good making this move a classic for the ages. There is some old slapstick comedy which keeps you laughing. without telling secrets out of school this movie is worth the almost 3 hours a viewing. I would consider this a top 10 for family viewing.

Warning: Technicolor silliness ahead, as Universal's nutty series of turban-and-camel movies comes into view. Arabian Nights was the first of these confections, and after it became a big wartime hit it spawned a series of follow-ups, most of them starring some combination of Maria Montez, Jon Hall, Sabu, and Turhan Bey. The story is nonsense, with Hall as a deposed caliph battling his half-brother (Leif Erickson) while remaining incognito amongst a group of traveling players. Montez plays dancing vixen Scheherazade, and her crazy costumes and limited acting range give ample evidence for her later enshrinement as a camp icon. The film's level of seriousness is aptly demonstrated by the casting of Shemp Howard (of the Three Stooges--like there's another Shemp Howard?) as Sinbad; John Qualen plays Aladdin, and vaudeville pro Billy Gilbert plays the leader of the troupe. Coming off best is Sabu, the young star of The Thief of Baghdad and The Jungle Book, whose innate likability is infectious even in these inane circumstances. Arabian Nights probably isn't the most fun of these movies; check out Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves and Robert Siodmak's crazed Cobra Woman, too. They work on two fronts: family-movie fodder and high camp. --Robert Horton
Customer Reviews:
Arabian Nights.......2007-05-25
Excellent movie from the 40's these old movies are the best with great actors, like jon Hall, Sabu,Shemp, and of Course Maria Montez I think she is one of the most Classical Beauty's of a bygone era I love movies with her in them as well as Jon Hall,Turhan Bay check out Allie Baba and the Forty Theives another great one. Everyone should have this movie.
What can I say Wonderful, Great, good plot ,great actors of a bygone era.
We Want MORE Montez.......2007-04-23
This DVD is absolutely gorgeous. The technicolor is so vivid and beautiful-like an early Disney film. I have watched my new copy already three times- it is so much fun to watch on every level. Lovely to look at and the best campy humor to top it off. While I love this film, it is quite tame compared to some of the wonderful excesses that were to follow in this cycle of cult favorite Maria Montez classics.
Thank you Universal for finally releasing one of your classic "Easterns" onto DVD. But please don't stop!! Maria's fans are legion. Her films are some of the hardest to find and most desireable to collectors. Remember of the six films she did with Jon Hall at Universal, only two were ever even released on VHS. The demand is high. Please Universal- give us a "Maria Montez Collection" with the remaining five Easterns. "Cobra Woman" alone is probably the most famous camp classic to never merrit a DVD release.
We want more!
The Most fun you can have in a film........2007-03-11
This is a great film, and they really dont make them like this anymore. It's funny, has some good action scenes and a light hearted story. It's even got Shemp in it. I saw this for the first time yesterday and I enjoyed it so much i went out and bought it.
Entertaining camp classic is enjoyable "sand and sandals" epic..........2007-03-10
MARIA MONTEZ, JON HALL and SABU made some very entertaining Technicolor "sand and sandals" epics at Universal and this DVD restoration showcases them in brilliant Technicolor.
It's strictly Saturday afternoon matinee stuff, nothing to really ponder in the way of complex plots--just the usual good vs. evil with Hall coming to the rescue of beautiful princess Montez in her usual damsel in distress kind of role.
Exquisitely photographed on desert sands, it's exotic fun fare for adults and children with lots of eye candy to keep things interesting. TURHAN BEY is effective in a brief role but it's Montez and Hall who keep the story moving along at a lively pace. Well worth viewing and nostalgic fun for fans of the Universal series starring this trio of stars.
KNAB, UTAH IN GLORIOUS TECHNICOLOR!.......2007-03-02
Universal's first 3-strip Technicolor feature is stunning to behold with Knab, Utah standing in for the Arabian desert. Technicolor is the highlight of this fun film. Inspired by the success of Alexander Korda's THE THIEF OF BAGDAD (1940), this was the start of a very popular series of fantasy adventure films from Universal with the beautiful Maria Montez and Jon Hall. The film is a lot of fun, but it pales when compared to THE THIEF OF BAGDAD, which not only had Technicolor, but one of the greatest musical scores (Miklos Rosza) ever created for a film as well incredible sets and art direction. The earlier film is the true classic of fantasy films, but the ARABIAN NIGHTS is a lot of fun in its own way -- just not a classic.

My Daughter Loves Scooby.......2006-11-04
My 4 year old daughter loves Scooby Doo and loved this movie. She laughed at everything but was disappointed the rest of the gang was not in the movie.
Not Even Worth The Single Star I Gave It!.......2006-07-15
Like countless others have said... It's a dud. Not worth the money spent or the time wasted. So boring and even though i love scooby doo and my collection is huge... I would have not have even bought it for the collection if i had seen it first. I don't care who you are, NOT worth "5" stars. EVER!!! Please save your money. I would suggest these Scooby Doo Dvd's if you would like an alternative.
- Scooby Doo Season's 1 & 2
- Any Of The "What's New Scooby Doo Series"
- Scooby Doo & The Witches Ghost
And Many Other "Full Length Features"
You can't Get Any Worse Than This. Instead Of Scooby Doo, It Is For Sure A Scooby Don't.
So your child(ren) will thank you, unless you are looking for something to get them to fall asleep. Or like another reviewer wrote flat out leave the room in under 10 min.
Enjoy!
The worst Scooby-Doo I have ever seen........2006-02-15
I am sorry whoever made this movie, but I hated it. It was pointless. If you are not a collector then there is not any reason for you to buy this. If you are a collector like me then you should wait untill someone is selling it for 1 dollar or less, then only buy it if you have to. I have it, but I will most likely never watch it EVER again. And I am sure you would never ever either.
Scooby and Shaggy are the only ones from the gang in it, and they are only in it for around 5 minutes, it gets sooooo boring because Shaggy is just telling a bunch of stories to get out of trouble with the king.He even dresses up like a girl...then the knig wants to marry him, and all of that happens within 5 minutes...stupid.
This one is just way to far out there for me, I never watch it, EVER. It was a waste of my money.
not scooby doo.......2004-07-19
We rented this dvd and I was very disappointed. A major portion of the show doesn't even have scooby or shaggy in it. Glad we rented this one instead of buying it.
Scooby Doo where are you (and Shaggy)?!.......2004-03-09
My kids love the Scooby Doo DVDs. We bought this one hoping to add more Scooby to choose from. The kids actually walked away from the TV. It was almost unrecognizable as a Scooby Doo cartoon. It was more like "Hannah-Barbara rips off Scooby Doo". Don't waste your money because you will just be disappointed with the whole thing.

Description
A ruthless Sultan (Dougray Scott) enacts a barbaric decree to avenge his unfaithful first wife by bedding--then beheading--the women of his empire. The wise Scheherezade (Mili Avital) devises a desparate plan to save her kingdom by seducing the Sultan's imagination with the fantastical tales of Aladdin, Ali Baba, and larger-than-life heroes, warriors and djinns. Mind-blowing adventure and extraordinary special effects set against the backdrop of mysterious Arabia make this an exhilarating trip through the greatest anthology of all time.

he second part of Pasolini's Trilogy of Life (beginning with The Decameron and ending with Arabian Nights), is based on the fourteenth century stories of Geoffrey Chaucer. Plunging with gusto into some of the blackest and bawdiest of the tales, Pasolini celebrates almost every conceivable form of sexual act with a rich, earthy humour and weaves a visual magic that draws on the work of artists such as Bruegel and Bosch.

This set is worth buying just for "Jason and the Argonauts." The "Arabian Nights" is a delight. "Moby Dick" and "The Odyssey" were very nicely mounted, but somehow a little less fun than the first two. As for "The Lost Empire" it was a great movie, but somehow didn't fit with the rest. Perhaps because it was based on a Chinese tale, or perhaps because of the notes of realism (the story is framed by modern events) that were jarring in what is essentially a "fairy tale."
As all reviewers have noted, these are handsomely mounted with not apparent sparing of expenses. Great attention to detail in costuming and settings. Also the stories, particular "The Arabian Nights" move at a clip that is brisker than one expects in made-for-TV movies. I do wish that one was 10 hours longer.
These movies are a delight for young and old, though not for sensitive youngsters, for, as in the original works, there are acts of violence and other sorts of despicable behavior.
I bought mine new from Amazon and am sad to see the set is not still available. If you want to collect them do them in roughly this order:
1. Arabian Nights/Jason and the Argonauts
2. The Lost Empire
3. Moby Dick/The Odyssey
A must have for any DVD collector.......2006-03-31
I really bought this set just for Moby Dick, and since it's about the same price for five movies, as it is for a single. I figured this wasn't a bad deal.
Moby Dick, Jason and hte Argonauts, the Lost Empire and the Odyssey are all wonderful movies, but the best in my opinion is Moby Dick. With stars Like Patrick Stewart (STTNG, X-Men 1-3, Ted Levine (Memoirs Of a Geisha, Monk, The Hills have Eyes, Gregory Peck and Henry Thomas (Legend of the Fall,) you cannot help but love this movie. Its a classic movie at its greatest, but don't worry if the time on the box reads 145 minutes. Since I had origionally owned the VHS version which only runs for two of the three hours, I for one was rather worried on getting gyped again. But the DVD version is the full three hours, and after watching it, you won't ever go back to the VHS version ever again. So much of the character and plot development had been cut out, that all you were really getting was just the basics of the film. Definatly not as blood stirring and wonderful.
Again, I highly reccomand this collection for those that love Hallmark movies, good classics or just the intrigue of worlds and centuries long past. Trust me...you'll be glad you spent the money.
A Wonderful Movie Collection To Own.......2002-10-09
As always, Hallmark has out done itself. I Own all of the Hallmark movies available, and it was a sheer delight to add these 5 movies to the collection. The movies combine Myth, Fantasy, Magic & Adventure. In Jason and the Argonauts, Jason embarks on a perilous voyage to fulfill his destiny. The Odyssey braves the terrors of a mysterious world, matching wits with a fantastic array of being both mortal and monstrous. In Moby Dick the captain and the crew go into the unchartered waters of their darkest fears. The Lost Empire has a God who was trapped for 500 years & A powerful monkey king who together battle against an army of demons and other creatures of evil. Arabian Nights brings to life some of the most timeless fables to come down through the ages (Aladdin, Ali Baba, and other larger then life heroes.)

Ultimately Hollow.......2007-06-01
The work really drew me in initially by showing ancient and modern, Arabic and Chinese, drawings of tales from the Arabian Nights. However, then it does nothing but keep re-showing those images. There is a paucity of interviewed scholars. Leonard Nimoy states that Ali Baba, Sinbad, and Aladdin are the most famous of the stories and then he summarizes each one. Well, that ate up time! The documentary asks many questions that it does not answer. It's mentioned that linguist Richard Burton eroticized some tales, but the tales that include same-sex sexuality are never brought up. This work presents itself as teaching something, but actually presents close to nothing.

Description
Legendary director Pier Paolo Pasolini (Canterbury Tales) combines the heroics and hedonism of the classic Arabian tales with his dreamlike vision of bawdy pleasures and sublime sensuality to create "Arabian Nights," the masterwork of his Trilogy of Life.

Arabian Nights.......2004-06-16
As if I walked into a dream; actually many dreams. The stories are interwoven and you get hooked on each.
A DVD zone THEY LIKE IT BUT I DON'T.......2004-01-24
I perfectly understand that the cinema of, let's say, Werner Herzog, King Vidor or Andrei Tarkovski, can be described as poetic but I don't think that this adjective is relevant regarding Pasolini's ARABIAN NIGHTS. I didn't find in this movie an ounce of poetry. To present Arab tales in a very realistic manner, with the exception of one or two scenes, is maybe original, perfectly boring but not at all poetic.
Furthermore, I'm not specially excited by the presentation of nude teenagers, masculine and feminine, making love in a rather mechanic manner and by the erotic toys shown by Pasolini in his movie. So I strongly advise you to reread or buy a copy of "A Thousand and One Nights", a book that has the merit to plounge his reader in an imaginary poetic world and leave ARABIAN NIGHTS to Pasolini's aficionados.
If it's dreamlike, then it was a bad dream.......2003-10-08
Like a National Geographic documentary about this part of the world with scenes of bad acting edited in, all incoherently edited and incompetently filmed. Some of the Italian seems dubbed at times, and the "sex" scenes are so unsexy, devoid of any molecule of desire--like a stag film with bad production values. Don't get me started on the scene in the tent with the golden bow and "arrow"! I paid $8.50 to see this at a theater and walked out 2/3 of the way through. The only bright light is the arresting young actress who plays the doomed Aziza.
ARABIAN NIGHTS -.......2002-07-08
My first experience with Pasolini was his "Salo" movie and it was a mixed experience I am still contemplating. However, "Arabian Nights" was my second outing with this director and I found this film to be an enchanting, atmospheric work of art. This is what the real tales of the Arabian Nights must have resembled. No Hollywood glitz, no gilding of any lillies, only alluring scenery filled with lurid tales of love, lust, revenge and fulfillment. Really try to see this masterpiece! Next for me will be the "Decameron" and then, "Canterbury Tales". Thank you.
Outstanding, poetry in cinema..........2002-02-18
I've been recently watching this movie again and I was so glad that I went through the expense and bought this out of print DVD. This is the movie that is bigger that its genre, it is a poem indeed. This is the case with other films that are art and not just entertainment. I actually find Arabian Nights more exotic and romantic that Canterbury Tales, but I would not judge which is my favorite among the three of them (i.e. plus Decameron). Each has its own character and I believe Pasolini excelled in conveying that special air and mood that each book represents. I find Arabian Nights also the most melancholic and mysterious, and I think that it was Pasolini's goal, also. I wouldn't say that the people in this film are necessarily beautiful - Pasolini aesthetics are quite controversial and might not be universally accepted. This is the case with all his films. The incredible result, though, is that with non-professional actors and himself not having any cinematography education, he achieved the pinnacle of cinema art. For me, films like this is the same to cinema as Michelangelo's creations are to sculpture, and it is only incomprehensible how come that it's almost impossible to buy Pasolini's DVDs at a reasonable price, especially when looking at the mass production garbage that occupies shelves of video stores. The irony is that Pasolini was tormented by the same question about the role of crude and mindless entertainment being served from TV. I hope that despite everything, his art will live and win over people minds...Last advice for viewers - steer clear if you don't like "boring foreign movies with subtitles and without action". This is exactly it.
