Some diehard Batfans have been slow to warm to the animated series Batman Beyond even though it was created by the same team responsible for the excellent Batman cartoon of the early '90s. The Dark Knight should be a brooding avenger in a noir-nightmare Gotham City, the purists argue, not some smart-aleck teen four decades in the future, with jet packs, invisibility shields, and other sci-fi gizmos loaned him by an elderly Bruce Wayne (voiced, excellently as always, by Kevin Conroy, his stony bass given a raspy hint of old age), now confined to hobbling about on a cane and monitoring his protégé's activities from the Batcave. Between its respectful reexamination of the "tortured hero" mythos and its sleek, anime-inspired look, this feature-length movie should go a long way toward quieting their complaints. Of course, it doesn't hurt that they've brought back the most legendary figure in the Rogues Gallery (voiced by Mark Hamill, deliciously deranged), but exactly how and why the Joker has managed to turn up 40 years after his last meeting with Batman still as youthful and diabolical as ever is explained not only logically but terrifyingly as well. The secret behind his arrival is perhaps the saddest, grimmest twist any purported "kids' show" has dared to attempt. (Parents may well want to preview this tape before screening it for the very young.) Once again, Warner Brothers' cartoon Batman has outshone all the live-action films, never allowing the thrilling action set pieces or flashes of wry humor to drown out the drama, even tragedy, of the all-too-human superheroes. --Bruce Reid

5 out of 5 stars I'm tanned, I'm Rested and I'm Ready to Give this Town a Wedgy Again!.......2007-09-14

He was thought dead. The laughter was supposed to have ended.

But evil never dies.

The Joker is back!

His mission? Why, give Gotham a wedgy again!

But this Gotham is different than the one the Joker left behind. It's a new Gotham with a new Batman.

Plenty of surprises abound in this thrilling chapter in the Batman Beyond universe.

This movie is brilliant, pure and simple.

I've seen both the regular and the uncut versions of this film and it's the uncut version that's being reviewed here (the regular is virtually the same and has only a few altered scenes).

The uncut version doesn't hold back and isn't sensitive to the viewer's eyes. This one's much more violent than the regular version. In the original release, certain events were only implied. In this one, they are shown. (If anything, I was surprised at how graphic this cartoon was compared to the Batman Beyond and Batman: TAS episodes.)

Ah, yes, the joys of direct-to-DVD releases.

The Batman in Batman Beyond, Terry McGinnis, is real. You care about him, you relate to him. You want to be him even when the tension mounts between him and his mentor, Bruce Wayne.

The Joker's nasty in this and once more Mark Hamill, with that creepy laugh of his, reminds us why he was born to play the Joker. The dialogue, the jokes--utterly fantastic!

The story is stellar, with multiple plots going on at once. It also answers the questions you have about the fate of the characters from Batman: TAS, which had a series finale that fell flat. (It was just another episode, really.)

The first time I saw this film I couldn't believe what happened to one of the Bat regulars. It still blows me away every time I see it.

Evil never dies.

Language warning: Blasphemy

5 out of 5 stars Great Long Episode.......2007-09-06

This "movie" (particularly the uncut version) is quite good. It's certainly the best episode of Batman Beyond there ever was, and adds to the series as a whole. I really enjoyed the plot and the Animated Joker was, as always, top-notch. Certainly worth the money.

5 out of 5 stars Batman Beyond finally shines!!.......2007-05-26

The Batman Beyond series was definately not as good as Batman TAS or The New Adventures of Batman. It wasn't that the idea wasn't good. It's just Terry isn't a Bruce Wayne and definately not the original Batman. Also the black and red with no cape does take some getting used to. But I do like some secrets that are revealed like Bruce and Babs relationship. Who woulda thought!? Anyway, when The Return of the Joker came out it was pure gold. The flashback to the good ol' days was great, although sad. Too bad for Tim. I definately recommend the Uncut version. It's definately as PG-13 as they warn. Talk about Murder anyone?? Torture?? Definately pick this one up. If you don't like Beyond, you'll definately like the Bruce/Babs/Tim/and Joker angle. Great Stuff.

5 out of 5 stars Better!.......2007-05-15

It's like a totally diffrent movie from the original release.
The re-addition of the cut scenes makes it a much, much more powerful movie. It also makes a heck of a lot more sense this way that it did as the WB butchered version.

Very recomended even if you have the original release. If you don't, then this is the version you need to have.

5 out of 5 stars Not your older brothers Batman, this is better.......2007-04-01

I relate the critics view of this series to the Transformers vs. Beast Wars crowd. That to be true to the source material the story has to be THE same with updated animation. I think that is wrong. This is a brilliant series, with this movie being the Pen-Ultimate. Sadly, the animation and story are so good, that everything that came in the season after, was just not as good. Although Batman Beyond's appearances in the later Justice League show is brilliant. This movie also has one of the darkest and twisted ends for one of our great heroe's that has to be seen to believed. Not since Batman "Death in the Family" from the comics, has innocence been this lost. Not for young viewers. Great movie.

For fans and newcomers, this boxed set holds a great collection, including all four great movies. The first in the series, Batman (1989), and arguably the best of the four movies, exudes the moodiness of the Dark Knight's character. Tim Burton's direction and Michael Keaton's rendition of Batman are an electrifying combo. Together they capture the sinister atmosphere of Gotham City and Batman's darkness. Jack Nicholson as the fiendish Joker and Kim Basinger as the resourceful and gorgeous Vicki Vale lend their charm. Three years later, in 1992, Burton and Keaton reunited for Batman Returns. This time our pointy-eared hero has to combat two villains: Danny DeVito as the disturbed and freaky Penguin and Michelle Pfeiffer as Catwoman. In Batman Forever (1995), Joel Schumacher gave his direction to the story with Val Kilmer under the cape. Kilmer keeps the moodiness but adds a little panache to his rendition. His archenemies this time are the Riddler (Jim Carrey) and Two-Face (Tommy Lee Jones). Luckily, he enlists the help of the Boy Wonder, Robin (Chris O'Donnell). The final movie in the series, Batman & Robin, is great eye candy, and this time Schumacher returns with George Clooney as the leading man and Chris O'Donnell again as Robin. Together Batman and Robin battle the icy Mr. Freeze (Arnold Schwarzenegger), with a little help from Batgirl (Alicia Silverstone). Delve into the Gotham City world with the Dark Knight to protect you, and don't forget to make lots of popcorn for this Batman marathon. --Samantha Allen Storey

3 out of 5 stars Batman Series.......2007-07-07

The recently released "Batman Begins" is better than all of these movies combined. Here is how I rate the films in this set:

Batman:
Jack Nicholson is great as the Joker, but that is about it. The ending is bad. Apparently Joker is both bullet proof and missle proof; and his little gun can shoot down Batman's plane. That was really stupid. How the Joker died was dumb too. A plastic statue that weighed maybe 5lbs was stronger than him and a helicopter. Robert Wuhl sucked in the film. Who is that loss? hahaha
B-

Batman Returns:
Danny Devito ruined this movie. He was absolutely atrocious as the Penguin. He died in the end because he couldn't get a glass of ice water hahaha. Christopher Walken was terrible in it as well. The Walken character and his stupid son were useless in the movie. They wasted the Penguin as a villian as this story was absolutely ridiculous. Not much positive things to say except that Michelle Pfiefer was in it.
D-

Batman Forever:
The best of the series. Val Kilmer was good. Nicole Kidman and Jim Carrey were excellent in their parts. My favortie scene is when ED Baglel Jr. gets killed by Riddler. Good stuff. Unfortunately some of it was annoying. Like any scene Tommy Lee Jones was in.
B+

Batman and Robin:
Pretty bad. They should have stopped before making this. George Clooney was pathetic. Not as bad as Batman Returns, but close. I wish Mr. Freeze would have frozen everyone before they could have started the cameras rolling hahaha. This might have been responsible for ending Chris Odonnel's acting career. Where has he been? hahaha. I haven't seen him act since. Uma Thurman was one of the few bright spots.

3 out of 5 stars Not the Real Deal.......2007-06-30

I had seen 'Batman' awhile back. I then purchased and watched 'Batman Begins'. So much for what came before. I will now give the 'Anthology' to whomever wants it. Batman Begins is true to the DC comics and, what I would decribe as, more serious. It is in a way and epic story. Since this is a review of the 'Anthology', it's OK for what it is. But what it's not is 'the real deal'.

3 out of 5 stars Batman...before Bale.......2007-05-25

Alright. I'll try to be brief.
Batman was good. Joker was weird. but it was interesting to see the 80's take on Batman. The new rubber suit looked very, very stiff. I know they all are, but this was the stiffest. I liked the beginning, but the bat sign on his chest has too many sharp angles that looks ugly. Other than that the story was good, very dark too. Keaton doesn't play the rich boy, playboy persona too well but you get used to it. Surprising that it was joker who killed his parents. Very surprising. 3 out of 5 stars.
Batman Returns was really good. Loved the suit.It fit more on Keaton and wasn't bloated like the first. Absolutely great Catwoman. Michelle Phieffer nailed that part.Penguin was really weird but Danny nailed it too. My one gripe is that they should really stage some good fight scenes. It seems like Batman is just a walking display. Good movie. 3 1/2 out of 5 stars.
Batman Forever...well it was a strange movie. New Bruce...New Batman...Different style. Extremely bright crazy lights and alot of an overreacting Two Face. Riddler was great and funny. Good job Jim. I liked this when it first came out mostly because the action improved alot. Great fights. Hideous Batmobile. Great Robin story. I give it a 3 out of 5, only because it was a lot less realistic than Returns.
Batman and Robin was a complete joke. I actually saw this in the theaters. What a bad movie. Period. I heard the same guys who made the Power Rangers kid show made this. No wonder. Way to goofy and stupid. Even the action couldn't save it. Bad Ivy, Bane is a walking, bulking dunce who only says "AAUUURGHH!" What is with Mr. Freeze. Arnold? Of all the people. Arnold? He was so cheesy in this. Batgirl doesn't help either. This is where everyone thought (including myself) that Batman sunk and would never be ressurected...until he "Begins" again in '05. This gets a 1 out of 5.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Box Set! Shame on Amazon!.......2007-04-10

Well, I must tell you guys: this product is awesome! It has everything a fan of Batman needs and wants! The only bad thing about it (at least for me) was that I thought all the discs had Spanish subtitles and that was why I bought it, but then when it arrived home, I noticed that only the movies had the subtitles, the other discs with all the bonus features didn't.

I think Amazon should specify which discs have subtitles and which discs don't, so we -all the customers- know what we are going to get. Is it so difficult to write something like: AVAILABLE SUBTITLES: English, Spanish and French (only in discs 1, 3, 5, and 7). That would be fair; Amazon is not a garage shop, it is an international web site where people from all over the world buy products.

5 out of 5 stars Decent collection of Batman Animated films........2007-05-15

I loved these as a Kid, and now as an adult I still enjoy these. Good stuff.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent animated movies.......2007-03-09

Mask of the Phantasim is an oustanding Batman movie. Good plot, great animation, and action. Just like the animated series, but this is an original movie. The fight scene in the end when the Joker tries to escape on a jet pack is pretty cool.

Return of the Joker is an original movie from the Batman Beyond animated series. I prefer the original Batman, but this is a pretty darn good animated movie. It shows the last battle between the original Batman and the Joker, and the Joker returns from the dead to cause problems for the new Batman, and his mentor Bruce Wayne.

Sub-Zero is pretty decent. great explosion scenes in the end when Batman and Robin rescue Barbara Gordon (Batgirl) from Mr. Freeze.

This is a MUST for Batman fans!!!

4 out of 5 stars so is Joker CUT or UNCUT?.......2006-12-09

alright, this is getting a bit confusing...
so we finished watching the 3 films from the batman original movies box set, excellent stuff, especially Return of the Joker

now i was annoyed at the DVD being full screen
so we went online and did a little research... then outpopped all these questions we can't seem to find true answers to:

1. the RotJ that comes with this boxset... is it CUT or UNCUT?
cuz according to amazon, the separately sold UNCUT disc is 77 min, while the separately sold CUT disc is 70 min. and when i checked the info on MY disc? it says 76 min
so then i checked amazon for the box set info, and it says it contains the PG-13 director's version (so i'm assuming it's the UNCUT version?)
THEN i read reviews and have seen several folks saying the RotJ included in this boxset IS the CUT version?
THEN i read several other more reviews & i see someone saying the UNCUT is 4 min longer than the CUT (PG13 vs PG) instead of the 7 min i saw earlier (77 min vs 70 min). but my disc from the boxset says 76 min? so wHAT IS what?

needless to say, all these conflicting infos just left us confused as hell...

***so WHAT EXACTLY is shown on the UNCUT disc that is gone on the CUT disc?
how long r the actual movies from both versions?
if someone can please inform us THE CORRECT INFO then we can finally know for sure if we're missing out on the UNCUT or not...

2. was this film shot in widescreen at all?
what we saw on ours was fullscreen, but then i also read that if it is shown in wide-screen, it's a fake widescreen with added black bars on top/bottom, and by releasing the picture that way it actually makes the image smaller... so then why do we see full screen on our version (from the box set)...??

PLEASE, someone plz clear this up for us, many thanks!

3 out of 5 stars Just some advice take it if you want.......2006-11-18

I borrowed this set from my friend and return of the joker is the CUT version. At least it was on his. The overall boxset it doesn't come with any additional features. It is the exact same version if you buy it separate. Recently I bought them separate. I recommend you search for them individually. I found all three of those to include the batwoman brand new and payed much less then the boxset price. The USED boxset price. I payed less than $10 without countin' shipping. So I say search first, you might get lucky.

5 out of 5 stars If you like the Batman animated series, you'll like these. .......2006-08-09

If you have the cash, why not purchus all three of these hit movies together in one package. Two of them are set during Batman the animated series. In Mask of the Phantasm, the past and present collide for Bruce Wane. Several gangsters in Gothum are being killed by a terrifying figure known only as the Phantasm. And Batman is accused of being the murderer. Now, he must discover the identity of this mysterious assassin, and keep one step ahead of the Joker as well. As far as I know, this movie may be set some time around the first season of the animated series.
In Subzero, which seems to take place directly after the events in episode 84(Deep Freeze), Mister Freeze is desperate to find a blood transfusion for his beloved wife, who's stasis tube was shattered. The Comissioner's daughter, Barbara, has the appropriate blood type. Now Batman has to rescue her.
Return of the Joker is set during the Batman Beyond animated series. It seems as if Batman's greatest nemesis has returned, but an aged Bruce Wane refuses to believe that this clown is the real deal. Now Bruce's successer Terry must do all he can to find the answers. Fans of the series are in for a real treat along the way as well. This one's one of my favs. So enjoy this set if you choose to purchus it.

Amazon.com essential video

The first Batman sequel takes a wicked turn with the villainous exploits of the freakish and mean-spirited Penguin (Danny DeVito), whose criminal collaboration with evil tycoon Max Shreck (Christopher Walken) threatens to drain Gotham City of its energy supply. As if that weren't enough, Batman (Michael Keaton) has his hands full with the vengeful Catwoman (Michelle Pfeiffer), who turns out to be a lot more dangerous than a kitten with a whip. As with the first Batman feature, director Tim Burton brings his distinct visual style to the frantic action, but this time there's a darker malevolence lurking beneath all that extraordinary production design. --Jeff Shannon

Like the groundbreaking 1989 original, Batman Returns is directed by the wizardly Tim Burton. And like the first blockbuster, it's a dazzling adventure that leaves you breathless.

5 out of 5 stars Catwoman... nuff said........2007-09-12

I got this DVD because of Michelle Pfiefer's performance. This is by far the best Catwoman movie ever. This DVD should be renamed to Catwoman because she steals the show. Tim Burton is a genius, I love the darkness of the movie, it's so edgy. I love how he got so deep with the Catwoman character and even the Penguin. You can feel and understand why they are the way they are. Burton does an outstanding job at getting into the psychology behind all of the characters, right down to the nitty gritty. While some people may have not liked the dark raw nature of the film, I loved it and it's one of the reasons why I love Batman and Catwoman. No one ever claimed this movie was meant for little kids. I really get tired of all of the other cookie cutter carebear superhero movies where everything is hunky dory and the good guy always comes out on top in the end. No one will ever top the Catwoman performance of Michelle Pfeifer and it is such a shame that the recent Catwoman movie totally destroyed the image of Catwoman.

3 out of 5 stars Batman's Actually in this One!.......2007-09-11

A mysterious "penguin man" surfaces and takes the city by storm, so much so that evil business tycoon Max Shreck, played by Christopher Walken, thinks he can turn Penguin into the city's new mayor. But Penguin is not all what he seems and he secretly controls the Red Triangle gang, who are wreaking havoc across the city.

Add to the mix is one Selina Kyle, Shreck's lowly assistant, er, secretary, who, after a bad night with her boss, becomes Catwoman.

The bat signal shines and the Dark Knight returns to once again rid Gotham of chaos and restore order.

Michael Keaton is back as Gotham's Guardian and brings to the role all the mystery and edge that made the '89 movie so popular. What's even better is that this movie actually has Batman in it and the vigilante appears, clad in black armor, more than just four times like in the previous flick.

Danny DeVito as the Penguin does a great job given what he had to work with. Though the Penguin in this film is not the same as the one in the comics, DeVito still did well portraying a man who was born...a little different.

Michelle Pfeiffer pulls off the dual role of Selina Kyle/Catwoman nicely. In fact, she plays four distinct roles in this film, all in one character: nerdy Selina, hip Selina, crazy Selina and Catwoman.

This film is filled with action, darkness and fun, all set in Tim Burton's eerie Gotham City, which was a character on its own in this film and its predecessor.

It's the hokey plot that's earning this film a lower rating than the previous one. Had the story been better, this movie had the potential to be one of the best superhero flicks ever.

2 out of 5 stars BETTER THAN.., NOT AS GOOD AS.., COULD HAVE BEEN..........2007-09-03

These are the words many reviewers use to start their reviews. Whether a movie is a sequel, a prequel, or a first time original, it owes it to itself to be the best movie it can be. I really had a hard time choosing how many stars I should give this movie. There's all this cool stuff going on in this movie, I want to give it 5 stars. Then there is so much heavy bog down, slow pacing, and scenes that could have been shortened, to a qaurter of it's lenghth, I wanna give it 1 star. Many reviewers have asked for a zero stars category. Now I think there should be a I'm-just-not-sure how-many stars category. I saw this movie twice at the theater. I really enjoyed it the first time because there was so much action going on and because it was different from the first BATMAN. When I went the second time there was not as much action as I thought in fact most of the movie was time filler, very boring time filler. Then I realized different does not mean better or worse. It just means different. But this movie was not just different it was worse. When Batman 1989 was being made Tim Burton had to answer to John Peters and Peter Guber who were what I'll call casual Batman fans. In this movie Burton was given free reign. And because of this, he let everyone know he wasn't much of a Batman fan at all. Then the part that really raised a red flag was when Michael Keaton said he would not do the third Batman movie if Tim Burton wasn't going to direct it. I've got news for you Mr Keaton Tim wasn't that great of a director. Was there something going on between you two that would institute the don't ask don't tell policy. BIG FISH and SLEEPY HOLLOW were definately his best work. But his work on the Batman movies was just a job to him. He has no love or understanding for what Batman means to so many people. I don't know why some of you people praise him so much. I still recommend you get this 2 disc set or the 8 disc Antholgy. Remember bad Batman is better than no Batman.

5 out of 5 stars A Feast For My Eyes.......2007-07-11

Batman Returns is a classic movie. It has great effects, wonderful acting, cool photography, a fantastic score, and is directed by the greatest director of our time. I dont know if this is Burtons best movie as a director, but its certainly worth more than five stars. The film has aged so well and still looks absolutely gorgeous. The film is so dark and moody. I love it. Batman has always been one of the more darker heroes, this film really captures that. I cant stand when people say that Batman isnt hardly in the film. I agree with Tim Burton who says that Batman is meant to be more hidden. Dont let those opinions stop you from watching this true work of art. The film also has some great action scenes and a good chemistry between the actors. Its quite hard to describe how incredible the film is. I cant see how the original can ever be said to be better than this.

2 out of 5 stars A total failure except for production design and score........2007-06-19

Batman Returns followed the amazing Edward Scissorhands. And it showed that Tim Burton could not translate his personal vision to megabudget Hollywood fare. It is a grating, unfunny, depressingly awful film that virtually no one in their right mind would recommend. Audiences knew it, critics knew it.

The positives: The cat suit looks amazing, and Michelle Pfeiffer was a good choice. This was one of the first films that featured Dolby Digital encoding and it sounds to this day, 15 years later, incredible -- particualarly with Danny Elfman's Ed Scissorhands rip-off score. Bo Welch has ideas to spare, some of them great (Selina's apartment, The Penguin's political hideout) some of them not so great (the ridiculously overdesigned Gotham City, Joe Versus the Volcano air-conditioning units). But onto the really bad:

The Penguin is a disaster of Tim Burton's doing, where we see him attempt to expand one of his little pen and ink cariciatures into something capable of empathy amd humor. Yet he's patently ridiculous; pathetic, juvenile, and mean-spirited, Burton's character fails by every measure and is a complete bore. Trying to kill all of Gotham's babies? Really a lame criminal plot, out of place in this kind of movie and a new low. He is not a character that illicits much more than disgust. No matter how you slice it, that's not what you want for your arch-villain.

Catwoman gets the only great scene in the movie, her transformation. The campy sense of humor, music, and acting all gel for about five minutes. Otherwise, the Gloria Steinam in latex bit is silly. Daniel Waters: nice try. Michelle Pfeiffer manages to make it just tolerable enough. But if you are going to go the dominatrix route, let's see her really mess with Batman's head.

The plot is convoluted and nonsensical. There's not much to say other than Daniel Waters simply has no idea what he is doing in this three-ring circus. That empty-calorie feeling you get after watching Batman Returns? Look no further. I don't think Burton knows or cares. Listening to his commentary is not encouraging.

5 out of 5 stars An open Request.......2007-03-06

To the owners of the t.v. series starring adam west and burt ward: Please, please put the show on dvd soon, so we can share this wonderful show with our children before they grow up. It was done so well, good clean humor and it's obvious the actors are enjoying making the show. I will pre-order the moment you decide to release.

4 out of 5 stars A Bat-Documentry with a story line.......2006-08-01

Growing up in the 60's and watching Batman series, which I knew was corny, campy but cool, this movie is sort of a story, plot documentry using flashbacks that Adam West & Burt Ward have throughout the movie. I enjoyed it very much, and now know that the dynamic duo were also dynamic womanizers. This is a great movie for anyone who grew up watching the Batman episodes with a towel cape around his or her neck. The actors who portray the dynamic duo in the flashbacks are dead ringers as well. Delightfully done !

4 out of 5 stars Some days you just can't get rid of an old TV show........2006-05-19

Seeing as I'm a huge Bat-Fan (hence the name), I was immensely entertained by this here Reunion flick. The chemistry between Adam & Burt is still as strong as it was back in the 60's, and the "flashback" cuts are pretty comical sometimes. Not the best Batman movie ever, but it's cool to have if you love the old TV show like me.

5 out of 5 stars Corny, but fun!.......2006-04-29

It's not a "movie" but a reunion show of the corniest kind. I loved every minute of it! Always good to see Adam West and Burt Ward together. I remember as a kid meeting Burt Ward in the Robin costume, and asking the dumbest questions! The campy show may have ruined the darkness that Batman was supposed to be (although resurrected by Frank Miller) but the show was a fun romp as is this reunion special.

3 out of 5 stars Reunion DVD.......2006-03-07

Be warned, it is not exactly what you may think a reunion special may be. A little tongue in cheek, a little seriousness, a little downright boring, but may appeal to diehard fans.

Adam West and Burt Ward reminisce about the old days while also trying to unravel the missing Batmobile. Two look-a-likes portray them in their younger years (Marsden and Brewer). OK, that's fine, but it would have been nice to include as much as the archival footage as possible eg. more footage from the actual TV show. Unfortunately that has been kept to a minimum throughout, so kind of loses the nostalgic appeal. Too much of the film is given to the actors portraying West and Ward.
