5 out of 5 stars ROBERT G DURANT.....in HD DVD rocks the house.......2007-09-01

This is one of my favorite Raimi films and with this HD DVD release, it really does the film justice. True there are no extra supplements here, but the picture quality alone makes this release worth every penny. The color and sharpness of the picture quality is 100% improvement over the standard dvd edition. Don't miss out on this title and lets hope Universal contiunes to release films of this quality to the HD DVD library. :)

5 out of 5 stars superb .......2007-08-31

Darkman has been made in the nineties at the time where they were no computer for spécial effects.Nevertheless the results are amazing.
The scénario and the acting is excellent and thrilling. Darkman is now a "cult movie".
This Hd DVD version is great for the picture quality.
As for the sound this is very clean with good dynamic; mostly left/center/right with nearly no surround effects and an average presence in the subwoofer.
I have no possibility to try the Dolby true HD track.
In conclusion buy this HD DVD for your collection.

4 out of 5 stars Darkman is Swamp Thing on Steroids. Hd dvd features/pic and sound quality below........2007-08-31

When I say this is Wes Craven's Swamp Thing on steroids I'm comparing films not actual characters. The thug/henchmen Pauly in Darkman was also a thug/henchmen in Swamp Thing named Bruno. Darkman has the feel of a adult superhero film, picture Lon Chaney's phantom from Phantom of the Opera and is also part action, adventure, crime, horror, drama, sci-fi film covered with dark humor with a sprinkle of cartoon as when Peyton Westlake/Darkman played by Liam Neeson does a road runner move on top of a moving truck while hanging from a hook that is suspended from a helicopter.

Liam Neeson does an effective job, who better down the road to train Christian Bale to become the Dark Knight than Darkman himself. The bad guys are great and dark, the leader played by Larry Drake (Dr. Giggles) is notable and has a collection of fingers that he takes from people.

Seems like Raimi has wanted to do a super hero movie long before spider man. He eases Bruce Campbell into being a hero from evil dead 1 and 2, then three years later does Darkman who would be one cool super hero but he's not quite there yet, although I haven't seen the sequels, Raimi does create one cool character. Then a couple years later does Army of Darkness and Bruce Campbell has evolved into a super hero character on his own, or maybe it's because Bruce is Darkman, when you see the ending of Darkman you'll know what I'm saying. Finally he stops beating around the bush and does Spider man. Spider Man 2 is one of the best super hero movies out of all super hero movies in my opinion.

So, Darkman has something for everyone. If you like super hero movies this is for you, if you like action/adventure this is for you, and if you liked Swamp Thing your going to love it.

The hd dvd looked fine as most do, however there really aren't many bright colors that pop in the picture to really show it off, it wouldn't be my reference hd dvd for picture quality, I would recommend Hot Fuzz or 300 to show off your picture quality. The sound was very impressive. There are no special features to mention.

Thanks for reading.

5 out of 5 stars Impressive HD! What All HD should look like!.......2007-08-02

After being sorely disapointed by HD releases of Excalibur and Army of Darkness, I was extreamly happy when I saw the opening menu for Darkman.

As soon as the clips began to roll behind the menu I knew they'd done the job right here. This film was largely missed in theaters and the home video and DVD versions where grainy, washed-out presentations that greatly diminished the style of director Sam Rami.

This is a must for HD DVD players. The pitcture is fully restored, crisp, clear, vibrant and devoid of all film flaws such as dust and scratches. Where some HD DVD versions are nothing more than the original DVD digital masters transfered to the new format (much the way many early DVD's where really Laser-disk copied to the then new format) this is not!

Darkman is a great, twisted peice that blends the ultra-violent comic-book styles seen in now in films like Sin City with the breakneck actions sequences of films like Spiderman.

See it again for the first time on HD DVD! This is the sound and fury of Home Theater and one of the best restorations I've ever seen!

BTW, if you have a smaller HD set (1280X720p max)that only accepts up to 1080i, then set your HD DVD player only to output 720p, it reduces the pixelation in the dark grays and blacks and reduces motion blure. I use this with my Toshiba Player and 42" sony grand wega through HDMI and the picture is flawless. Remember, if your set is 46" or under, 720p is mostly likely it's native resolution and outputing at that resolution can cause major improvement.

When attorney Julie Hastings (Frances McDormand) uncovers corrupt city real estate dealings, evil thugs attack her scientist boyfriend, Peyton Westlake (Liam Neeson). Left for dead after his lab is detonated, he miraculously survives when the ensuing blast hurls him into the nearby harbor. Treated as a John Doe at a city hospital, he is unknowingly submitted to radical therapy which numbs his nerves to feeling--but which heightens his strength and his emotions. Once conscious, Peyton escapes from the hospital and builds a ramshackle lab in an abandoned industrial plant. Horribly burned and scarred by the lab explosion, he uses synthetic skin to impersonate his would-be murderers and seek retribution for their evil deeds. Peyton also tries to reunite with Julie, who believes him to be dead. While the film has an average script, it is overcome by the flashy cinematography of Bill Pope, the bombastic score by Danny Elfman, and the well-choreographed direction of Sam Raimi. The director confidently walks the line between suspense, action, comedy, and romance as he examines a bitter, victimized antihero who risks becoming as monstrous on the inside as he appears on the outside. --Bryan Reesman

    3 out of 5 stars A very sad film.......2007-08-10

I always felt like crying when the bad guys messed up that man and left him bitter and disfigured! I can't imagine this story being a comicbook! Seems too dark for a comic book!
Then again I haven't read many comics from America except Archie-comics!

This movie as far as I'm concerned is about a man's descent into darkness! I don't think this movie is the best but I find the notion of a man's descent into darkness to be an interesting concept! I just felt this movie is lacking on the impact it could have potentially had!

    4 out of 5 stars It's Dark.......2007-07-28

No one wanted to give Mr. Raimi the rights to make a movie based on a comic character(of course we all know how that changed years down the line), so he just made up his own hero, or anti-hero as it were. I've seen this movie quite a few times over the years since it's initial release and I've always enjoyed it. I always felt Raimi had a better character going in his Darkman creation than he ever did in taking on that dorkus Spiderman crap. Darkman's, well...dark. He's seems to be pieced together from bits of classic Universal horror characters-with just a pinch of the Hulk-without being too much like any one of them in particular. The film is total R-rated material which we never see anymore in major theatrical releases, especially those with a comic character theme. Sure, it's a bit cornball, and it bit cliched, but what action/comic style film isn't to some degree? And how many have Larry Drake as a villain?? Think about that one, Bubba. Raimi's first dip into the mainstream was definitely his best because he still kept his style. Sure, it was a little restrained, but he kept it. Yeah, he would go all crazy again with Army Of Darkness, but I believe this was actually a bigger production...but don't quote me on that. Well worth your time, and fun too!

    4 out of 5 stars Formative Years.......2007-05-14

There are some movies that one remembers as they grow up and even fewer films have a direct impact on their development. Darkman is not one of them but I do remember quite a bit of it.

Day after day I would come home from school, curl up in front of the VHS player and do my homework while watching this movie. Rewatching it today satisfies a feeling nostolgia for those times. It's amazing how much of the film I remember. It may not be as good as I remember but that is not at the fault of Sam Raimi and the other collaborators on the film per sae as the quality of the final product was highly influenced by the socio-economics of the Studio at the time of the production which is unfortuante: a film that is way too short to unfold the interesting mythology which had potential to be a great story arch that never came to fruition (run on sentences are applicable in film reviews).

All and all, a terrific iconic film from the early 90's that deserves a repeated viewing every year or so.

1 out of 5 stars the Worst Action movie I've ever seen.......2006-08-22

I guess success turned around for Sam Raimi in 2002 & 2004 with the two Spider-Man films, but first he created this "V" like character in this garage of a movie, I liked "V for Vendetta" but not this "Darkman" if want to see a badly burned viligante in a mask see "V for Vendetta" don't see "Darkman"

5 out of 5 stars Horrific And Awesome Action Movie With Heart And Rage.......2006-01-06

Years before moviemakers really starting getting comic book adaptations right with films like "Spider-Man" and "Batman Begins" came "Darkman", a brilliant action-horror movie that came closer than any show before it to capturing the darker, more developed comics of the modern era. It's a gory and action-packed - and intelligent, emotional and quite often humorous - tale as Peyton Westlake (superbly played by Liam Neeson) becomes the Darkman after barely surviving an attack by mob thugs employed by the crimelord Durant (Larry Drake), who Westlake's attorney girlfriend Julie (Frances McDormand) is trying to bring down. A scientist researching the development of a perfect synthetic skin to aid burn victims, it's being immersed in this liquid in its unstable corrosive state and then left for dead following the explosive destruction of his lab that is largely responsible for Westlake's metamorphis into Darkman.

Unable to feel physical pain but constantly assailed by emotional and mental anguish. Enhanced strength due to the maximum adrenaline now coursing unchecked through his system constantly, 24 hours a day. Serious rage problems. Severely altered, scarred physical appearance. Westlake/Darkman can create perfect masks of any human being (and mimic their vocal patterns precisely) but the masks break down after a finite period in sunlight, and thus he most frequently appears in his new identity's trademark garb of bandages and black trenchcoat and hat. I realize typing that that it sounds like a dopey outfit but it's actually a striking and intimidating look onscreen thanks to the great effects and costuming. Hellbent on a path of revenge against Drake's crime empire, and on protecting his love Julie from the shadows, the violent and vengeful reign of the Darkman begins. A movie that possibly could only have been made by a man capable of directing such diverse films as the "Spider-Man" epics, the "Evil Dead" trilogy and "The Gift". Highest recommendation.

Sam Raimi created Darkman with a potential franchise in mind, and his original movie had enough flair to suggest a sequel was warranted. Unfortunately (or perhaps wisely--for Raimi), he handed over the straight-to-video sequel duties to rookie director Bradford May, and nobody bothered to come up with much of a screenplay. As a result, Darkman II plays like a bad pilot for a proposed Darkman TV series, with Arnold Vosloo (best known as a villain in Jean-Claude Van Damme's Hard Target) doing his best to replace Liam Neeson in the title role. Sporting a dastardly scar and delivering lackluster punch lines as he kills his many enemies, Larry Drake returns from the first film as the villainous Durant, who wreaks havoc in his attempt to finance and manufacture the world's most destructive automatic weapons. As he supports the synthetic skin experiments of a like-minded scientist, the scarred hero known as Darkman thwarts Durant's ruthless plot, but the case proves costly for the intrepid crime reporter (Kim Delaney, pre-NYPD Blue) who allies herself with Darkman's efforts. Basically, this by-the-numbers plot serves as a tissue-thin vehicle for lots of explosions and gratuitous violence, and it's all about as inspired as a bad syndicated action show. Of interest only to those who were dazzled by the original Darkman, and even then it's a disappointment. --Jeff Shannon

    4 out of 5 stars His Name's Not "Buddy". It's Durant!.......2007-07-28

Considering this is a direct-to-video sequel to a hit film missing it's star, the film is very good. It manages to capture the look and feel of the first film better than you'd expect. Not 100% mind you, but the title sequence and the flashes of Darkman's rage and the music are duplicated perfectly. This no doubt has to do with Sam Raimi and Robert Tapert being on board as executive producers. It's the return of Durant(that's Robert G Durant to you), and he's no mere henchman this time around, but the big cheese. It's a bit difficult to believe he actually survived that helicopter crash, and even more difficult to believe that if he did survive, that he wouldn't be covered with major third degree burns not unlike Darkman himself. But this is a B action film, who the hell cares? Did we question why Arcane just showed up in Return of the Swamp Thing all alive and healthy for no logical reason? Of course not, you just accept it. Durant's got a plan to corner the market on arms sales by creating one big whoopass gun, but he's having a few problems with some folks who won't sell their building so Durant can convert it to a manufacturing plant. Add to that, Darkman problems. Darkman has now become full fledged crimefighter(at least I think so. In the beginning he puts the hurt on a guy who was shooting up a car full of people, but then switches his attention solely to Durant), and lives a kind of Batman existence underground. He even has a mini railway car. He's still having a hell of a time trying to get that synthetic skin to hold together though. He finds hope in another scientist who's working on the same thing, but that's quickly down the tubes coz the scientist is the guy who won't sell Durant his building....and we all know what happens when folks don't cooperate with Durant, don't we? So now Darkman's double pissed. Again he tries to infiltrate Durant's organization through his clever disguises and it all leads to an explosive showdown as you would expect from this kind of film. Though most of it's by the numbers, this movie is pretty good. Don't be discouraged by the fact that Liam Neeson isn't here. After all, he had more important things to do like star in that rotten Star Wars movie(Rob Roy was cool though!). Arnold Vosloo isn't what you'd call a household name, but most folks might remember him as the guy who played the mummy in the films with Brendan Fraser. Vosloo was actually picked by Raimi and Tapert as Neeson's replacement, and it's easy to see why. I actually like Vosloo better as Darkman. He's got charisma, charm. Hell, the guy is smooth. And when needed he can jump into action mode, no problem. I like Liam Neeson, but he was a little too mumbly and whiney. Vosloo is more of the badass you picture a guy like Darkman to be. Of course a lot more screen time is given to Larry Drake. Actually, I'd even go so far to say he's the star of the film. Great job as always, he looks like he's having fun. Of course he usually looks like he's having fun. A very good performance, a very mean and over the top villain. Darkman 2 is worth checking out, you just might be a bit surprised.

    2 out of 5 stars Sadly,.......2005-03-29

The lack of Liam neeson and raimi's directing is what ruined this movie for me. While Mr. Vasloo is superb in his taking on the burden of the Liam created character and mr. Drake always has appeal, the movie as a whole needed a much better script. It was too predicatble, too phoney.
On the bonus side, they did manage to keep the hapahazard and crazy comments Darkman makes during chases and fight scenes in tact, so that was a plus.

5 out of 5 stars Another great movie!.......2004-07-04

This movie is a fun filled movie that delivers nonstop action and isn't one second boring! Brilliant!

    5 out of 5 stars A big surprise!.......2004-07-04

After I saw this movie I realized that it is not so bad as everyone described it to be. Although they changed the person who plays Darkman, this movie is still good and fun to watch more than once. It's a good movie!

    5 out of 5 stars Very good!.......2004-07-02

All I can say is that I loved this movie from start to finish because of its splendid acting, cast, script, and everyting else. This movie is must see for all comic book fans because it's just GREAT!

4 out of 5 stars Do The Darkman.......2007-07-29

Aw hell, since I reviewed the other two, why not part 3, eh? Continuing in pretty much the same style as part 2, Darkman 3 gives us a new villain in the form of Jeff Fahey. Fahey's into marketing steroids and he's a lousy husband and father. Darkman's on hand to throw a wrench in his steroid operation. But when Fahey captures Darkman(thus screwing him once again right when he's on the verge of perfecting his synthetic skin. Man, this guy's always having the rug pulled out from under him at the last minute), he finds a way to make a super steroid from Darkman's blood, thus injecting his henchmen with the steroid and giving them Darkman's strength. He plans to make big bucks with this neat new drug. Darkman gets away and goes after Fahey, but along the way becomes infatuated with Fahey's wife and daughter who he feels sorry for since they are treated like dirt. Darkman does what he does best by being master of disguise and sneaking around Fahey's operation. One amusing scene has him wearing Fahey's face and searching his home for a computer disc and then finding himself in the middle of a surprise birthday party thrown for him. Of course it all leads to the big confrontation with Fahey and his supergoons. Typical, yet fun little action flick. There's a little bit more of an attempt to go for Darkman's emotional side again, moreso than the last film. Vosloo's not gonna get the academy's attention around Oscar time, but he's still suave and cool as all hell as Darkman. Fahey makes for a rather sinister, soft spoken villain. He's no Robert G Durant, but he's a mean SOB. If you liked the style of the second film, then there's no reason you shouldn't find this entertaining. Harmless family fun.

    4 out of 5 stars This ROCKS.......2005-11-29

Hi! I loved this dvd! The effects are good, and I think its scary! But i am 10. The disfigurement is great and is really scary. I don't think it was as good as the 1st one, but it was a lot better than the 2nd one. I think Liam Neeson was best in the part, Larry Drake was BAD. And Jeff Fahey was good. Nice voice.

3 out of 5 stars darkman is back..for round three............2005-10-19

this movie is a great popcorn muncher!! sit back relax and enjoy...although not as : powerful" as the first one it still has a decent plot my only gripe is the dvd ..there are no extras period not even a trailer or anything talk about bare bones..still if you liked darkman one and 2 which i thought were excellent pick this one up just for the film..

1 out of 5 stars dont waste your time.......2005-06-20

I look at the average raiting for this movie. # stars, now thats supposed to mean its ok. Well ppl, this plotless load of junk is getting more than it deserves. I read some review saying the musicwas good, and, well, from my perspective It seemed like the music was played at entirely random moments. Like it could skip from a fight scene to a dramatic we feel sorry for darkman moment, and i would almost barely knotice, if it wasnt for stupid clips they play of images that make no sense. It was like they didnt know what to show so they figured this is kinda how he feels so lets just put this here. Save your money. I bought this after seeing the first, which was lame, but i though it was ok, and hoping this one would hae like maybe better action sequences or something. Well this was in 6th grade. HUGE mistake i hated it when i first saw it. It seemed like they wanted to make a sequel but never got around to doing it. And about the actrion sequences it looked like i was at six flags watching that batman show they play. Good, considering its live, but lame as far as movies get.
Oh, and the villians who were supposed to seem smart or truly evil, just seemed spiteful and annoyingly upsessed with killing. I really think this is one of the most absolutely stupid films ever made. But that was untill I saw reptillian. Which is kinda depressingly awfull.

3 out of 5 stars "Darkman" Has Potential as TV Show..........2005-01-08

Lets stop making lame sequels boys and girls. I mean this isn't a real bad sequel, but they are getting lamer. Why not slow it down, and turn it into a TV series. It would be exciting and different from anything else on the boob tube. Jeff Fahey is always welcome in any movie, but doesn't have the menacing premise that Larry Drake had. Still, loaded with lottsa action and suspense. Good special effects enhance the story, and lets face it, you need this one to complete the set.
