Description

With high-flying entertainment and messages about friendship, acceptance, courage, and believing in yourself, Walt Disney's DUMBO is "a timeless classic for children of all ages. Walt Disney at his finest" (Us Weekly). Meet Dumbo, Mrs. Jumbo's sweet little "Baby Mine" who charms all who see him . . . until it's discovered that he has huge floppy ears! With the support of his very best friend, Timothy the mouse, Dumbo soon learns that his spectacular ears make him unique and special, allowing him to soar to fame as the world's only flying elephant. You'll love all the daring adventure, colorful characters, award-winning music, and a circus tent full of fun bonus features! Go behind the scenes with DisneyPedia's "My First Circus," an all-new activity where you can learn about your favorite circus animals. This Big Top Edition also features Sing-Along Songs, a DVD Storybook, a new digital transfer, and much more.

Amazon.com

A Disney "classic" that actually is a classic, Dumbo should be part of your video collection whether or not you have children. The storytelling was never as lean as in Dumbo, the songs rarely as haunting (or just plain weird), the characters rarely so well defined. The film pits the "cold, cruel, heartless" world that can't accept abnormality against a plucky, and mute, hero. Jumbo Jr. (Dumbo is a mean-spirited nickname) is ostracized from the circus pack shortly after his delivery by the stork because of his big ears. His mother sticks up for him and is shackled. He's jeered by children (an insightful scene has one boy poking fun at Dumbo's ears, even though the youngster's ears are also ungainly), used by the circus folk, and demoted to appearing with the clowns. Only the decent Timothy Q. Mouse looks out for the little guy. Concerns about the un-PC "Jim Crow" crows, who mock Dumbo with the wonderful "When I See an Elephant Fly," should be moderated by remembering that the crows are the only social group in the film who act kindly to the little outcast. If you don't mist up during the "Baby Mine" scene, you may be legally pronounced dead. --Keith Simanton

5 out of 5 stars My favorite 'older' Disney movie.......2007-08-23

Very sweet, very touching. Dumbo is adorable and he doesnt even say a word. The scene when his mom is rocking him on her trunk gets me every time. Truly beautiful.

5 out of 5 stars Disney Video.. need I say more?.......2007-07-30

My kids love these timeless classics just as much as I did. I only wish that Disney wouldn't be so stingy and would sell all of them all of the time. I also wish that these were in the movie theaters all the time. I would love to see this on the big screen with my son and have him eat popcorn with other kids oohing and aahhing just like he is doing.

1 out of 5 stars Crippled DVD that you can't transfer to your iPod, a waste of money.......2007-07-23

I get a lot of kid's DVDs that I load onto my iPod for my daughter. It's great for long trips since a good movie will keep her occupied. The problem with this DVD is that it incorporates a new copy protection scheme that makes it much more difficult to format shift it to an iPod (I use HandBrake for this). It seems the only reason Disney released this edition was to prevent consumers from converting this DVD to other formats. The 60th Anniversary Edition released in 2001 has more content and doesn't have this restriction. So if you intend to put this on your iPod, PSP, AppleTV, etc. don't buy this edition and look for the older Dumbo (60th Anniversary Edition).

5 out of 5 stars Perfect.......2007-07-09

Perfect and wonderful. As described. Great movie to buy at a great price.

5 out of 5 stars Dumbo.......2007-06-21

Disney's fourth full length-feature (running just over one hour) remains a powerful, poignant family film, offering kids a clear and useful lesson on the virtues of tolerance. Dumbo's initial cruel treatment is still hard to watch, since we've all witnessed similar behavior. The empathy we feel for this misfit elephant only makes his ultimate triumph more satisfying. A defining classic in Disney's film legacy. Best for smaller fry.

Kevin Costner's 1990 epic won a bundle of Oscars for a moving, engrossing story of a white soldier (Costner) who singlehandedly mans a post in the 1870 Dakotas, and becomes a part of the Lakota Sioux community who live nearby. The film may not be a masterpiece, but it is far more than the sum of good intentions. The characters are strong, the development of relationships is both ambitious and careful, the love story between Costner and Mary McDonnell's character is captivating. Only the third-act portrait of white intruders as morons feels overbearing, but even that leads to a terribly moving conclusion. Costner's direction is assured, the balance of action and intimacy is perfect--what more could anyone want outside of an unqualified masterpiece? --Tom Keogh

Description

A "truly spectacular" (The New York Times) film that combines action, romance and breathtaking adventure, Dances With Wolves is "a cinematic masterpiece" (American Movie Classics) that is nothing short of "a triumph" (Roger Ebert)!Sent to protect a US outpost on the desolate frontier, Lt. John Dunbar (Kevin Costner) finds himself alone in the vast wilderness. Befriending the very people he's sent to protect the outpost from, the Sioux Indians, Dunbar slowly comes to revere those he once feared. But when the encroaching US Army threatens to overrun the Sioux, he is forced to make a choiceone that will forever change his destiny and that of a proud and defiant nation.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A story every American should see.......2007-09-10

Great scenery, great music, poignant story have the fading of the great frontier and the demise of the Souix nation - an inevitable yet tragic clash of cultures

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful experience.......2007-08-16

Kabajhed enterprises delivers again. What wonderful cinematography. This is truly a classic for all times. While Costner is not always known for his acting ability, this one is a plus mark for him. I would recommend this to everyone.

3 out of 5 stars Good Film, bad disk arrangement, what a dumb idea.......2007-08-09

Although the film is a good one, I had to write this bad review, not for the film, but for the DVD arrangement on this Collector Edition. The first disk is two sided and has part 1 of the movie on side 1 and part 2 on the other side. The second disk contains the special features. Whatever moron decided this was a good idea has no clue about collectors and what they look for. This should have been put on three disks or at least put the special features on the B side, so the movie could be watched without having to manually remove the disk from the player and turn it over. I have a multi-disk player so I can just put them in the player and select which movie I want to see, sort of like a juke box, but with this DVD's arrangement, that isn't possible. Out of over 400 DVD's this is the only one that does such a thing (other than having a full screen on one side a widescreen on the other, that's Ok). The problem isn't the kind of thing one can return it for, so this one will go in the reject pile while I look for a better version (probably not available).

4 out of 5 stars Very good movie, but don't buy into all the mythology.......2007-08-06

Let me just get my quibble with the aura around this movie down first so that all the people who want to give me unhelpful votes will have some ammo in their guns: what about the Pawnee? This movie was credited with turning around the cinematic view of Native Americans by making them the good guy. And to a large degree it does just that, showing the Sioux through the eyes of an outsider who grows to love and respect them while spurning the decadent culture he used to be a member of. However, while the Sioux are portrayed wonderfully and humanely, the Pawnee come across just as badly as any "Red Indian" ever did in the 1950s. They scalp a defenseless man, launch an attack on a defenseless community full of women and children, make evil-sounding war cries, etc. Oh, and in Stands-with-a-Fist's flashback sequence, we learn that Pawnee massacred her whole family too. This isn't really a major problem, but it is certainly something that should be thought of before heaping so much praise on the film for its "revisionist" leanings, especially since (as far as I'm aware) the Sioux were the masters of the Great Plains rather than the Pawnee.

Nonetheless, the movie still earns a hearty 4/5 star recommendation. While I wouldn't have minded focusing a little less on Stands With A Fist and more on the more interesting Sioux characters, I recognize that this is John Dunbar's story and she represents a large part of it. The acting is very good (including a career-best turn by normally-iffy Kevin Costner), the action sequences are good verging on spectacular, and it comes to a very emotional but unmanipulative conclusion. A little long (made by Costner after all) but a nearly-great film

5 out of 5 stars Dances With Wolves.......2007-07-11

Long but engrossing Western is staggeringly beautiful as it details the tragic outcome of our expansion westward: the virtual annihilation of a proud society and culture. Costner has never been better as the most conflicted of men, a U.S soldier converted to a way of life that is dying, due to the destruction and injustice wrought by his own countrymen. An outstanding achievement for Costner, as the star/producer/director took home Oscars for Best Picture and Direction.

With six episodes spread out over four discs and a running time of well over six hours (in addition to an interactive CD-ROM filled with extra features), director-producer Jack Leustig's sprawling 500 Nations, a history of Indians in North America, is likely the most comprehensive effort of its kind ever undertaken.

Mention the word "Indian," and most will conjure up images inspired by myths and movies: teepees, headdresses, and war paint; Sitting Bull, Geronimo, Crazy Horse, and their battles (like Little Big Horn) with the U.S. Cavalry. Those stories of the so-called "horse nations" of the Great Plains are all here, but so is a great deal more. Using impressive computer imaging, photos, location film footage and breathtaking cinematography, interviews with present-day Indians, books and manuscripts, museum artifacts, and more, Leustig and his crew go back more than a millennium to present an fascinating account of Indians, including those (like the Maya and Aztecs in Mexico and the Anasazi in the Southwest) who were here long before white men ever reached these shores.

It was the arrival of Europeans like Columbus, Cortez, and DeSoto that marked the beginning of the end for the Indians. Considering the participation of host Kevin Costner, whose film Dances with Wolves was highly sympathetic to the Indians, it's no bulletin that 500 Nations also takes a compassionate view of the multitude of calamities--from alcohol and disease to the corruption of their culture and the depletion of their vast natural resources--visited on them by the white man in his quest for land and money, eventually leading to such horrific events as the Trail of Tears "forced march," the massacre at Wounded Knee, and other consequences of the effort to "relocate" Indians to the reservations where many of them still live. Along the way, we learn about the Indians' participation in such events as the American Revolution and the War of 1812, as well as popular legends like the first Thanksgiving (it really happened) and the rescue of Captain John Smith by Pocahontas (it probably didn't).

With its sometimes New Age-y music and many beauty shots of the great outdoors, 500 Nations has a rather different vibe than the average Ken Burns documentary. That may lessen its value for sober historians, but for the rest of us, this is an illuminating and important work. --Sam Graham

Description

500 Nations is an eight-part documentary that explores the history of the indigenous peoples of North and Central America, from pre-Colombian times through the period of European contact and colonization, to the end of the 19th century and the subjugation of the Plains Indians of North America. 500 Nations utilizes historical texts, eyewitness accounts, pictorial sources and computer graphic reconstructions to explore the magnificent civilizations which flourished prior to contact with Western civilization, and to tell the dramatic and tragic story of the Native American nations' desperate attempts to retain their way of life against overwhelming odds.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Finally, the truth is honored........2007-08-23

500 Nations is an excellent, documentary.
This series is very well made and well narrated,
but most importantly, it fills in a lot of the
history of which American shcool children are never
exposed, in our primary and secondary schools.
I think every American should see this documentary.

The ancestors have waited a long, long time,
for the truth to be told and this series bares that honor.

2 out of 5 stars One sided production........2007-07-23

So much effort and time went into this series, it's such a pity that the main theme is a one sided and anti "white settler" agenda. We have to imagine that Kevin Costner's lead role in "Dances with Wolves", has made him an authority on the history of the Native American peoples.
This series gave us the highly sanitized version of the lives of Native Americans; peaceful, down to earth types, totally in touch with nature and their Creator. Left out was the brutality of some of the plains indians and tribes of the South West, where rape pillage and torture were the accepted way of life.
We were told of some horrendous and unjustified massacres of Native Americans for example, at Sand Creek and Wounded Knee, but where was mention of the atrocities committed by Native Americans during the period from Jamestown to Wounded Knee?
Serious students of history know that only after researching many and varied sources, can they make credible comment on their subject.
Getting objective and accurate history from Hollywood is much like learning English Literature from a Marvel Comic. 500 Nations is certainly not objective, nor is it accurate due to its omissions.

3 out of 5 stars It's pretty one-sided.......2007-05-26

Tells the history from one point of view. It would have been more fair to include all sides. I get a little tired of one segment of the human race being held responsible for all the mistreatment in the world.

5 out of 5 stars awesome.......2007-05-07

This was a very well executed film series and the music is great. The truth is a wonderful thing.

2 out of 5 stars Not as titled.......2007-03-11

I bought this in the expectation that it would cover the People of the "New World" as they existed before Columbus. Instead, it was basically a recap of the cruelty of the Europeans to the native populations viewed through the standards and sensibilities of today. I read 'Bury My Heary at Wounded Knee' and 'The Chronicle of the American Indian's Complaint' 30 odd years ago and being part Cherokee there was nothing new in the DVDs. Correction, there were many new things, most of which didn't happen. A good example is the DVD version of the conquering of the Aztec (Actually they were called Mexica but the DVD got that wrong as well). Read 'Conquest' by Hugh Thomas for the best book on the subject.

The Crow set the standard for dark and violent comic-book movies (like Spawn or director Alex Proyas's superior follow-up, Dark City), but it will forever be remembered as the film during which star Brandon Lee (son of martial arts legend Bruce Lee) was accidentally killed on the set by a loaded gun. The filmmakers were able to digitally sample what they'd captured of Lee's performance and piece together enough footage to make the movie releasable. Indeed, it is probably more fascinating for that post-production story than for the tale on the screen. The Crow is appropriately cloaked in ominous expressionistic shadows, oozing urban dread and occult menace from every dank concrete crack, but it really adds up to a simple and perfunctory tale of ritual revenge. Guided by a portentous crow (standing in for Poe's raven), Lee plays a deceased rock musician who returns from the grave to systematically torture and kill the outlandishly violent gang of hoodlums who murdered him and his fiancée the year before. The film is worth watching for its compelling visuals and genuinely nightmarish, otherworldly ambience. --Jim Emerson

4 out of 5 stars The Film Brandon Lee died on .......2007-09-07

The only reason I even know about this film is because of the tragic death of it's star Brandon Lee.I watched for that reason to see Brandon in his last screen role, I was suprised to find that I really enjoyed this film.It has everything a movie could have action, comedy, drama, horror, and a tragic love story.I think that this was a ground breaking film as far as effect go shot reminicent of the first Batman film so the visuals alone are a reason to watch the film not including the stuff I mentioned above so if you are in the mood for a moody superhero movie check this out.

4 out of 5 stars One not to have in your collection.......2007-09-03

I have viewed the The Crow when it was first release at the theater and later on two different formats VHS and laser Disc, both formats as good as there were at the time, don't come close as good as on DVD.
The colors were as close as you can get on the big screen (in a theater setting).
The Crow is formatted for 16X9 wide screen TVs which is must for those of you who don't have a wide screen television to enjoy the full color and dramatic impact this movie makes. Scenes with dark areas, stood out with clarity, even with scenes that had too much Red satuation were reduce to give a clearer picture.
DTS and Dolby Digital 5.1 were a added bonus to a great movie as it was met to be heard. So have your volume crack up and enjoy the sound track that plays in the back ground, you won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing........2007-06-02

First time I saw this film, I watched it on VHS. Not that great. It was extremely dark and I had a hard time seeing things. I popped in the DVD and WOW! I could see what was going on! It's great. The story is beautiful, dark but powerful. I highly recommend this film. Especially this eddition.

5 out of 5 stars classic.......2007-05-27

1994 saw the release of Alex Proyas' cult-classic "The Crow". The plot of the film is pretty straightforward; a vigilante killer, one year after the murder of himself and his girlfriend, goes out for revenge. In terms of the plot there aren't a lot of twists and the film is, dare I say...predictable...You know exactly how the film will unfold twenty minutes into it. Apart from the fact the vigilante has risen from the dead, movies with similar plots have been done before. Still, almost immediately after its release, "the Crow" achieved cult-status, enjoying a large, dedicated following. Why is that, exactly?

One reason that "The Crow" has struck a nerve with people is its theme of love defying death. The reunion scene between Eric Draven (Brandon Lee) and Shelly Webster (Sofia Shinas) is one of most bittersweet moments in film that I can recall. The relationship between the "good" characters (and there are very few) is also quite touching. Sarah (Rochelle Davis) is a quite likeable kid and there is genuine warmth in her scenes with her dysfunctional mother, Lee and Sergeant Albrecht (Ernie Hudon).

Most of the thugs in this film, apart from "Top Dollar" (Michael Wincott) are pretty generic. They are so vile, however, that it's satisfying when Lee takes them all down. The dark atmosphere, (dark streets, urban decay, cemeteries) cinematography, and action sequences are all quite exciting and well done.

Even if the film, at its core, (vigilante killer after bad guys) doesn't have the most original story line, the rich charectors, setting and themes of friendship and undying love more than make up for it. The abundance of excellent music (NIN, The Cure, RATM, there isn't a bad song on the soundtrack, infact) throughout the film is also a great bonus.

While Brandon Lee, sadly, never got a chance to really develop as an actor, his role of Eric Draven in this film no doubt ensures that his legacy has at least one classic.

After Elvis Presley got out of the army in 1960, he was instantly ushered into this Paramount movie about an Oklahoma singer who (surprise) gets out of the army and wants to open a club. Making a potentially lucrative bet that he can seduce a cabaret singer (Juliet Prowse), Elvis instead falls in love. Refurbished from his rockabilly roots into a slicker model for early-'60s pop, the Elvis of this movie is the one who made almost 30 more just like it. The songs include the title track, plus "It's Not Good Enough for You," "Tonight Is So Right for Love," and "Wooden Heart." Directed by Norman Taurog, a studio veteran who made his first film in 1928 and worked numerous times with Presley as well as Jerry Lewis. --Tom Keogh

The DVD is very sharp and clear. There are no glitches in it like in some of the ones I have purchased other places. My husband and I are thoroughly enjoying it.

When i first saw this mvie many years i wasn't too impresed, mainly because i expeted too much. Now having reviewed it again i find its actually a fun movie. A lot of the times we spoil our own enjoyment by expecting something to be what it was not meant to be and by being too bigoted in our views.having said that i guess over time we become a more forgiving of its flaws ad short commings. This is a perfect example of learning to enjoy something for what it is , and i did. picture quality is fine execpt for a couple of superimposed background scenes which arent perfect but that is a flaw common to the time it was made. The sound is also very acceptable.Go ahead and enjoy!

As Elvis once said this woman has a body that would make a preacher stamp his foot. Her dancing (as a professional dancer myself) is esquisite, she moves like a cat, and Elvis was as charming and charismatic as always, I enjoyed this movies when it first came out and never tire of watching it, and am going to purchase it.

2 out of 5 stars Too Much "Money" business.......2005-02-23

2003 plays like 2nd generation video, Elvis is fuzzy, not clear.
"Too many re-recordings", older originals a better buy.
I'm gonna try for an OLD vhs 1st release. The audio is now STEREO-Hi-FI. Stereo was started with THE Beatles "Rubber Soul", and "After-Math", by The Rolling Stones. In the 1956 time era for original Elvis Presley, there was mono. Anything re-created in 'Stereo' is not original Elvis.

Set in the chillingly possible future of 2054, Steven Spielberg's Minority Report is arguably the most intelligently provocative sci-fi thriller since Blade Runner. Like Ridley Scott's "future noir" classic, Spielberg's gritty vision was freely adapted from a story by Philip K. Dick, with its central premise of "Precrime" law enforcement, totally reliant on three isolated human "precogs" capable (due to drug-related mutation) of envisioning murders before they're committed. As Precrime's confident captain, Tom Cruise preempts these killings like a true action hero, only to run for his life when he is himself implicated in one of the precogs' visions. Inspired by the brainstorming of expert futurists, Spielberg packs this paranoid chase with potential conspirators (Max Von Sydow, Colin Farrell), domestic tragedy, and a heartbreaking precog pawn (Samantha Morton), while Cruise's performance gains depth and substance with each passing scene. Making judicious use of astonishing special effects, Minority Report brilliantly extrapolates a future that's utterly convincing, and too close for comfort. --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars Underrated & A Film To Think About.......2007-09-08

This gets high marks for being an involving film that, despite a long length of almost two- and-a-half hours, keeps ones interest all the way. Being a Steven Spielberg-directed film, it's no surprise that the photography is first-rate. This is nice-looking movie. Tom Cruise also was very good in here, not the obnoxious character he sometimes portrays (or did more often in his younger days.).

The film is a good mixture of action and suspense. Only the one chase scene was overdone with Rambo-like mentality of the good guys not getting hit when they should, and vice- versa. The subject matter is interesting, too: what would do you (or the police) had very reliable information on crimes that were about to be committed, that you could prevent things from happening before they actually did?

I am of the opinion that this is one of Spielberg's underrated gems.

5 out of 5 stars Spielberg doing what he does best........2007-09-04

Minority Report is a sci-fi thriller that poses the question, if you haven't commited a crime yet, how can you be charged for it. That's what John Anderton has to come to terms with when he's accused of the murder of a amn he does not know. This sends him on a tale that'll change his life.

Wonderful movie. Well crafted, beautiful, and a fun ride as well. Steven Spielberg crafts yet another wonderful movie to watch. You won't be disappointed.

Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Has Spielberg ever disappointed you?.......2007-08-11

Minority Report is a spectacular science fiction masterpiece directed by the great Steven Spielberg and loosely adapted from a short story by Philip K. Dick, one of the fathers of the cyberpunk genre. The movie shows us a world filled with dazzling technology but tells a personal story of a man who is betrayed by the system he worked for. There's plenty of action throughout the film but there's also some philosophy to make you think for hours after the end.

Minority Report is set in Washington, in the year 2054 and it's a great time to live in. The world has changed considerably and advanced technology pervades every aspect of life. Moving pictures draw your attention to every ad and poster. Holograms enable you to live out your wildest fantasies. Mag-lev vehicles ensure that 'car accidents' are a thing of the past. Retinal scanners are everywhere and the cops have jetpacks so the potential criminal has nowhere to run. In fact there hasn't been a single murder in Washington for six years thanks to a group of psychics who see every murder that's going to happen in the future. The police arrest these would-be criminals and place them in suspended animation. It's a good thing the system can't be tampered with and the precogs are never wrong.

At least that's what John Anderton the chief of police thinks until the precogs show him killing someone he doesn't even know. He must use all of his skills to escape and outwit the now-hostile system and find out the truth about the precogs, the conspiracies and his own destiny. All the actors give great performances, especially Tom Cruise and Samantha Morton.

Can we make choices that change our destiny or is the future inevitable. Is it fair to imprison someone for a crime they didn't commit...yet? Is this a worthy price to pay to maintain a murder-free society? Minority Report will give you a lot to think about and its engrossing mystery will keep you engaged until the very end. However, it is not a happy movie and some scenes are very heartbreaking so stay away if you don't like that sort of thing.

4 out of 5 stars philosophy meets crime prevention meets sci-fi.......2007-08-05

How much is it the elimination of murder worth? How much would we pay to erase the weeping bereaved from our television screens?

MINORITY REPORT foresees a moment in 2054 when technology has made such a world possible. Or so it seems.

As with all utopias in which the human report remains untransformed--that is, all of them to date--one smells a rat. This rat moves secretly to a Spielbergian rhythm until the hunting down of 'Precrime's' central and heroic figure (Tom Cruise) for a crime he is supposedly about to commit leads to the unraveling and the entrance into the system of--dare we say it--a measure of doubt.

Is it worth the occasionally mis-prosecuted innocent for a system that works most of the time? But not all of it?

In working out this plot via some of the wittiest screenplay to come along in a while and one or two superb chase scenes, the movie entertains and provokes.

Colin Farrel threatens to outshine Cruise, but both do their job well.

Possibly not a film to be watched more than once. But promising of a very enjoyable *once*.

4 out of 5 stars Engaging.......2007-07-23

This movie has all the makings of a classic. Great Sci-Fi with a turn the tables story that is compelling and engaging. Just enough in the way of special effects as to not detract from the story but to convey a future of both optimism and the terror associated with too much trust in technology and human institutions.

In all, great storytelling!

Director Joe Johnston has always had an entertaining sense of adventure, and with Hidalgo he proves it in spades. It's yet another underrated film for Johnston (along with such enjoyable popcorn flicks as The Rocketeer and Jurassic Park III), dismissed by many critics but a welcome treat for anyone drawn to good ol'-fashioned movie excitement. In his first role since playing Aragorn in the Lord of the Rings trilogy, Viggo Mortensen brings handsome appeal to his low-key portrayal of Frank T. Hopkins, a real-life long-distance horse racer who, as the movie opens, has witnessed the appalling massacre of Native Americans at Wounded Knee in 1890. Drifting into Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show, he agrees to compete, with his trusty mustang, Hidalgo, in "The Ocean of Fire," a treacherous 3,000-mile horse race across the Arabian desert. Toss in a bunch of conspiring competitors, a noble sheik (Omar Sharif), his lovely daughter (Zuleikha Robinson), and enough fast-paced danger to fill 133 minutes, and you've got a rousing, humorous, and lightly spiritual adventure that's a lot of fun to watch. It hardly matters that it's almost pure fiction (the real Hopkins was known by many as "a pathological liar"). More important is the love of movies and moviemaking that Johnston so delightfully conveys. --Jeff Shannon

Description

A sandstorm of epic proportions. A swarm of locusts so massive it obliterates the relentless sun. Deadly traps that defy imagination. These are just a few of the astonishing obstacles Frank T. Hopkins, the greatest long-distance racer ever, faces in the rousing action-adventure HIDALGO. Based on a true story and starring Viggo Mortensen (THE LORD OF THE RINGS Trilogy), Hopkins (Mortensen) and his mustang Hidalgo enter the ultimate extreme sport of its time -- the Ocean Of Fire. Underdogs challenging the finest Arabian horses and riders, they must not only survive the grueling race across 3,000 miles of the Arabian Desert's punishing terrain, but they must thwart the evil plots of competitors who vow victory at all costs! A great story of personal triumph, amazing special effects, and memorable characters make HIDALGO one of the most thrilling adventures ever.

if you love a great movie and like horses, this is the movie for you. i have watched this movie more time than i can count.

3 out of 5 stars The Wild, Wild Mideast.......2007-07-11

The strong presence of Viggo Mortensen makes this movie work as well as it does, and also carries it: a slightly ironic statement since it is the dogged mustang, Hidalgo, who carries Mortgensen's character across the Arabian peninsula. This is a "based on actual events" film about a death-defying horse nineteenth-century race that pits all comers against both one another and the nearly indomitable hazards of the desert terrain. While many begin the contest of living will against mindless nature, few, one, even none typically live to finish it, and never before has a white man so much as tried. Beginning in the vanishing realm of the American west around the time of the Wounded Knee massacre and soon transferring to the scenic desert of southern Asia, this tale of a rugged man named Frank Hopkins and his legendary horse Hidalgo has moments of greatness but overall spreads its brave plot too thin. There is a brief subplot about Buffalo Bill and some of the others in his colorful and refreshingly non-PC traveling show, and Omar Sharif is always nice to see in any movie, but these are all more distractions than additions. Mortgensen's fans will adore this movie, as will those who go in for animal flicks or the historical genre, but others who might see it strictly for its being an adventure story (which it really isn't) will probably find it disappointing.

4 out of 5 stars The kind of movie I never get tired of seeing.......2007-05-11

My profile. 43 yo (and getting better). No qulaifications as a movie critic whatsoever

This is one of those adventure movies I just cannot stop seeing... everything is perfect, the production, the choosing of the actors, the action.. and the love between man and horse united in such way that makes you actually hear the horse's thoughts..

5 out of 5 stars Painted Horse.......2007-03-15

Know one thought Frank Hopkins horse would win, Hidalgo went the 3,000 miles, over the desert of fire. This horse out ran a sand storm, This movie will be my favorite for a long tine.

4 out of 5 stars missed television worth seeing.......2007-08-26

I missed the Crow when it showed on television, and purchased it on a whim. The first five or six episodes seemd to be the basic superhero plots, pitting the crow against all too human enemies. Then the show changed and got deeper and better, with enemies that were not as easy to take down, and a providing a look into the afterlife that is the basis of the mythos of the Crow. Neat and fun. I'm glad to finally see the show.

5 out of 5 stars dacascos is dabomb.......2007-08-17

I am not a Crow purist, but I've been a fan of and followed the talents of Bruce Lee, Jackie Chan, and Jet Li over several decades. I've seen Brandon Lee's Crow, and when comparing the two Crows, I am even more a fan of the pure martial arts talent of Mark Dacascos. It's a pity that Dacascos does not have many huge martial arts roles in major motion pictures, and has spent his talents on Iron Chef America. BTW, do not bother seeing Cradle to the Grave as a sample of Mark's talents.

3 out of 5 stars OK I guess..........2007-08-14

Its OK and my kids enjoy it and watch it often. However, I prefer the original swedish version. The songs in this one are annoying and Tami Erin was a bit too old for Pippi (she has her own website, for all of you who were wondering what has happened to her). The whole thing just feels kind of awkward and peiced together. I am now ordering the original version in the hopes that it is what I remember and the kids don't notice the voice over as much as I do.

4 out of 5 stars Pippi is cool!.......2007-05-29

My best friend and I have grown up watching this movie. Now that we're older, we have begun to notice some of the corny special effects and lines, but I still think The New Adventures of Pippi Longstocking is cool!! I know that the way Pippi is portrayed in the movie is a bit of a character stretch, but, quite honestly, I saw the movie before reading any of the books. If it had been the other way around, I might not like the movie as much as I do. For me, this movie is a lot of fun memories.

4 out of 5 stars Pippi makes the kids say yippie.......2007-05-13

My kids love this movie. They didn't want to watch it because "Dad that movie is old." Yes it is old as far as they (9 yr old boy and 7 yr old girl) are concerned but I bribed them into watching it and they loved it. My daughter watches this several times a week. I think my son has a thing for Pippi. This is a good family movie and unlike the "family" movies they put out today you don't have to hit the FF button because there are no family un-friendly parts. Buy this movie and spend an evening with the kids. You'll be glad you did.

5 out of 5 stars Coming into your town.........2007-02-19

Worth it simply for the sentimental value. Seriously, it's pippy longstocking!

Product Description

Amazon.com essential video

--Tom Keogh
