Steven Spielberg's deeply flawed but sporadically fun and moving update of the Peter Pan legend stars Robin Williams as the grown-up Pan, a corporate-takeover type who must embrace his old identity in order to save his kids from Captain Hook (Dustin Hoffman). The stars put on a good show, including Hoffman's read of Hook's hysterical personality, Julia Roberts mini-turn as a tiny Tinker Bell, and Maggie Smith's touching performance as the aged Wendy. The visual contrast between the adult Pan's bustling outside world and the insulated fantasy of Neverland is striking, but Spielberg's ideas about the Lost Boys--politically correct in their ethnic diversity, energetic on skateboards--are contrived and cheapening. On the plus side, the story's theme about adults finding their innocence again through their children is very touching (though some people have found it cloying). If you can look beyond the glaring problems, there's plenty to like here. --Tom Keogh

5 out of 5 stars Great Peter Pan story.......2007-07-23

This is the best Peter Pan story. It reminds all of us how we forget what our childhood was like. It reminds us of what it takes to be a good parent, since our children don't stay little for long. Tinkerbell is such a tragic figure in it. This IS a classic!

1 out of 5 stars Very poor interpretation for children........2007-07-06

My son disliked it so much he turned it off halfway thru.
Very misguided work.

5 out of 5 stars GOOD MOVIE FOR FAMILY.......2007-06-18

My 5 years old son love to watch this movie. He also watch Disney Peter Pan(anime) but after few months I bought Hook and peter pan(no anime) then he liked it very much because he know the story from Peter Pan animation so it is easy to understand.

5 out of 5 stars Heart-warming.......2007-03-03

This film warms my heart, makes me laugh, provides some good points for teaching and sermon illustrations. I am surrounded by people who have forgotten who they are. Tinkerbell's push to help Peter remember has deeper meaning than perhaps it's meant to have, but it's true nonetheless.

1 out of 5 stars embarrassing.......2007-02-28

Seldom has so much talent (and MONEY!) been wasted on such unentertaining silliness.

Robin Williams, Dustin Hoffman, Maggie Smith, Julia Roberts, Bob Hoskins--it is painful to watch them cope with the bad writing, overemoting, over-elaborate (and dull) sets, and just general aimlessness of this picture.

Everybody works REALLY hard, and the strain shows.

The fun seems forced, the situations pointless, the message ham-handed, and the music--oh, my goodness--the music is the most syruppy mess this side of "Pearl Harbor."

Even the special effects are less than special.

All in all, very uncomfortable to sit through.

This screen adaptation of John Irving's novel A Prayer for Owen Meany was appreciated much more by audiences than by the majority of disapproving critics. Irving's books have fared only moderately well on film, and while The World According to Garp garnered critical praise, The Hotel New Hampshire was waiting in the wings to counteract the fanfare. Simon Birch is one of those nostalgic movies--determined to view the past in rose-colored hues--despite the fact that its protagonist, a dwarf named Simon Birch, is wholeheartedly unsympathetic. The film opens weepily, with Jim Carrey as the adult version of the film's main character and narrator, Joe Wenteworth (played as a youth by the serious young actor Joseph Mazzello). He's mourning at the grave of his best childhood friend, Simon Birch, with whom he had bonded instantly because both were misfits--one a dwarf, the other illegitimate. The deck is stacked from the beginning, especially when the camera dwells on Joe's luscious mom, Rebecca (Ashley Judd), who refuses to reveal the identity of Joe's father, which in turn urges Simon and Joe to embark on a quest to discover Joe's paternity. In a plot point that resembles The Scarlet Letter, the tide of fate turns on the "immoral" mom just as she's on the verge of finding true love with a decent fellow (played by Oliver Platt). Simon Birch ultimately descends into crudeness, though it asks the audience to continue to engage with its crass lead character. By the end, the film is reduced to drivel, cliché, and melodrama to tug our heartstrings into submission. All the things that should have been the film's focus--guilt, self-loathing, and redemption--remain elusive. --Paula Nechak

4 out of 5 stars Simon Birch.......2007-09-09

Simon Birch is an awesome movie, mainly because it apprears that Simon (the super short 12 yr. old) has more faith in God than even the Priest or his sunday school teacher. The sunday school teacher and others, except for his special friends, treat him really bad. The ending will amaze you!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Little Simon Birch.......2007-08-07

This movie is absolutely wonderful! You have to get past the handful of sexual references to see the true meaning behind the movie. It's def. not a movie for children under the age of 13. Other than that, Simon Birch is an absolute gem! Funny and very uplifting!

5 out of 5 stars an often overlooked gem.......2007-07-28

Simon Birch is an overlooked gem. This is a must see. Great for the whole family.

5 out of 5 stars Simon Birch.......2007-07-19

This is almost as good as The Mighty. Funny, dramatic, thoughtful, wonderful. Great movie for the whole family!

5 out of 5 stars Kudos for Simon Birch.......2007-07-14

What a wonderful movie!!! This is a movie to watch again and again. Ian Michael Smith does a wonderful job in his role as Simon Birch, as does the rest of the cast. I personally don't go out to the movies often, there isn't much good stuff out there, but I'm sorry I missed this when it was in the theaters. This movie will warm your heart. It will make you laugh and bring tears to your eyes and truly touch your heart. I think this movie should have won many awards. I know this is on my list of all time favorite movies. This movie has a message.

Harry Hook's adaptation is not as faithful to the William Golding novel as you'd wish (they excised the Lord of the Flies dialogue with Simon!) and because of it, the movie is less allegorical and less resonant. A group of young men from a military academy are stranded on an island. The group quickly becomes fractious with a passive section led by Ralph, trying to get rescued, and a hunter faction, led by Jack, trying to procure meat and "have fun." Peter Brook's 1963 filming seemed to get closer to the Darwinist sense of this cultural disintegration. Here, the hunter faction seems more like Peter Pan's Lost Boys than the bloodthirsty murderers they are. The performances, particularly young Getty, don't quite carry the weight of the situation. It's still, however, sobering to slowly watch the school uniforms traded for war paint, and the little boys turn into little savages. --Keith Simanton

Description

With 'sharply expressive performances (Peter Travers, Rolling Stone) by its young cast, this stunning adventure explores the deep dark corners of the human soul, as a group of adolescent castaways are thrust into an intense world where law and accountability are governed by the rules of survival. After a harrowing plane crash into the sea, a group of American military cadets finds itselfmarooned on a deserted island. Realizing the minimal chances of being rescued, the boys band together out of fear and desperation. But as the island paradise becomes their own, competition and power struggles split them into two packs. Ralph (Bathazar Getty) leads one group and preaches civilized ingenuity and togetherness, but Jack (Chris Furrh) wants nothing of it and builds a faction of barbaric hunters who ultimately go to war with Ralph. This powerful shift in conscience transforms ordinary kids into primal killers, setting off a devastating battle of good versus evil and presenting a haunting metaphor for the savage in us all.

4 out of 5 stars I'm glad I was never trapped on an island w/ these kids..........2007-06-07

This was a very good movie that came from an even better book. When I was younger I didn't understand people who would claim that the books were better than movies. Now, I do. However, I feel that for this statement to be true, one must have a vivid imagination and be able to immerse themselves in the world that the author created.

Anyway, I loved the book and I thought the movie was well done too. The kids are pretty good at acting. Almost too good, as if they were actually dropped off on an island and told that they had to figure out a way to survive. I would recommend watching this movie w/o children because I think it may be a bit much.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty Good Movie.......2007-06-04

It doesn't follow the book that much, but I think it's pretty realistic of what you see in the movie. It should be different since it's expressing someone's own idea and point of view to the book. Pretty intense and a really great movie. Buy it.

5 out of 5 stars Great Product.......2007-03-11

The product was received in great condition and timely delivered by the seller. I would buy again

4 out of 5 stars It is an ok movie.......2007-02-11

This updated version of this movie is quiet a change from the book. But, just because it is a change from the book isn't a good reason for me not to like it. I did like the movie over all and I thought that the point that the director tried to make came across fine. Even though there were no adults there, the children did develop a "government" and those differences came out in the group that won compared to the group that lost followers. Also, in developing a "government" there was a hierachy of leadership and blood shed. See the movie for yourself and come to your own conclusions about the movie. For myself, I did enjoy it and will probably see it again.

3 out of 5 stars Not the Best Adaptation.......2007-01-07

I read the book and then decided to purchase the film I thought it was not that bad but the swearing it was over the top. If you want to show this movie to students I'll be cautios there are more than 200 swearing words through out the film. There is an older version of this film, which is black and white, but far better than this one.

If you don't think Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery (1997) is one of the funniest movies of the 1990s, maybe you should be packed into a cryogenic time chamber and sent back to the decade whence you came. Perhaps it was the 1960s--the shagadelic decade when London hipster Austin Powers scored with gorgeous chicks as a fashion photographer by day, crime-fighting international man of mystery by night. Yeah, baby, yeah! But when Powers's arch nemesis, Dr. Evil, puts himself into a deep-freeze and travels via time machine to the late 1990s, Powers must follow him and foil Evil's nefarious scheme of global domination. Mike Myers plays dual roles as Powers and Dr. Evil, with Elizabeth Hurley as his present-day sidekick and karate-kicking paramour. A hilarious spoof of '60s spy movies, this colorful comedy actually gets funnier with successive viewings, making it a perfect home video for gloomy days and randy nights. Oh, behave!

"I put the grrr in swinger, baby!" a deliciously randy Powers coos near the beginning of The Spy Who Shagged Me (1999), and if the imagination of Austin creator Mike Myers seems to have sagged a bit, his energy surely hasn't. This friendly, go-for-broke sequel finds our man Austin heading back to the '60s to keep perennial nemesis Dr. Evil (Myers again) from blowing up the world--and, more importantly, to get back his mojo, that man-juice that turns Austin into irresistible catnip for women, especially American spygirl Felicity Shagwell (a pretty but vacant Heather Graham). The plot may be irreverent and illogical, the jokes may be bad, and the scenes may run on too long, but it's all delivered sunnily and with tongue firmly in cheek. Myers teams Dr. Evil with a diminutive clone, Mini-Me (Verne J. Troyer), then pulls a hat trick by playing a third character, the obese and disgusting Scottish assassin Fat Bastard.

Despite symptoms of sequelitis, Austin Powers in Goldmember (2002) is must-see lunacy for devoted fans of the shagadelic franchise. Unfortunately, the law of diminishing returns is in full effect: for every big-name cameo and raunchy double-entendre, there's an equal share of redundant shtick, juvenile scatology, and pop-cultural spoofery. All is forgiven when the hilarity level is consistently high, and Mike Myers--returning here as randy Brit spy Austin, his nemesis Dr. Evil, the bloated Scottish henchman Fat Bastard, and new Dutch disco-villain Goldmember--thrives by favoring comedic chaos over coherent plotting. Once they've tossed Austin into the disco fever of 1975 (where he's sent to rescue his father, gamely played by Michael Caine), Myers and director Jay Roach seem vaguely adrift with old and new characters, including Verne Troyer's Mini-Me and pop star Beyoncé Knowles as Pam Grier-ish blaxpo-babe Foxxy Cleopatra. A bit tired, perhaps, but Powers hasn't lost his mojo.

Description

I am a fan of all Michael Myers movies. I loved the first two movies of series and am going too buy them soon! Too bad I can't say the same for the third one. The first "Austin Powers" movie is funny and not too crude (4 stars). The second one is funny, but is a little more crude (3 stars) and the third one is nothing but fart jokes (2 stars). If people agree wiht me, don't buy this whole entire series, just buy the first two. If you are a die hard fan, buy the whole pack.

Description

In the fourth season of this award-winning show, the action at New York City's 15th Precinct is as hectic as ever. While Lieutenant Fancy continues as precinct commander, Detective Andy Sipowicz, although still a bit rough around the edges, has mellowed with the birth of his son. Detective Bobby Simone and Detective Diane Russell take the next step in their relationship, James Martinez becomes the Squad Delegate, and Greg Meadavoy considers becoming a surrogate father. But one thing that hasn't changed is the squad's determination to make sure the bad guys get their day in court and to also attempt to maintain a touch of normalcy in their personal lives even as they investigate cases that often put them directly in the line of fire.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Very Interesting series.......2007-09-01

I purchased this DVD because of David Caruso who starred in its first season. Then when I got into it I had to have the other seasons as well. The character are interesting and very complex, the actors do justice to the writers work. Very good series.
I just wonder IF New York city is that conjested and crowded, the 15th precinct shows a down and dirty part of the city. I enjoy the series, but sorry NY is a place I would definately wouldn't want to live.

1 out of 5 stars Most user UN-friendly discs I've ever come across & bad quality .......2007-08-18

The series is fantastic - I have no quarrel with that - unfortunately each and every NYPD BLUE series season discs that I have bought to date are of a very cheap quality and additionally, take a lot of the pleasure out of the viewing. After the obligatory FBI warnings and 20th century logos the disc goes straight to "episodes" with no "play all" option or "set up" option. Clicking on an episode then takes you to a perfectly useless submenu where you can either choose "play", "set-up" (for language and subtitles), "scenes" or "disc main menu" which takes you back to the irritating episode guide.

I generally like to watch TV Series when I am feeling unwell - I tend to doze when I am ill and having a favorite TV show playing in the background is usually soothing - not so with NYPD Blue as there is no option for a smooth transition from episode to episode, which is particularly annoying when the previous episode ends with a cliffhanger!

I know that discs can get scratched during shipping but this is especially liable to happen and ruin a disc when there are dual sided discs involved - they become dislodged during shipping and the B-side gets scratched by the very thing meant to hold them in place!
I am truly disappointed that Amazon does not give any "menu" info - after having purchased four seasons of NYPD Blue I would never willingly buy another DVD like this, regardless of how great the series is. The show is great - the series DVD sets are not worth the shrink wrap they come in.

2 out of 5 stars Great Show, Horrible New Packaging.......2007-06-04

I'll skip the glowing praise for the show in this short review, and instead address something I feel has been largely ignored: the packaging.

Seasons 1 and 2 came in a nice fold-out boxed set and ran at 6 DVDs. They played great on all my DVD players and were as beautiful as the content on them. Unfortunately, someone decided to save money by using 2-sided DVDs and reduce the count to 4 (and smaller packaging as well) with Seasons 3 and 4. For those of you not familiar with dual-sided discs I say this . . . Ordinarily, if they are used it's to have a 1-side is fullscreen (pan and scan) 1-side is widescreen movie disc. This is in itself no great hardship, since the main issues with such discs (there's nowhere to safely touch but the inner ring and outer edge, which is damn difficult putting it in or taking it our of a case) is mitigated by the owner's preference of 4:3 or 16:9; That is, you'll always play one or the other so the inevitable fingerprints are not that big a deal, since you'll touch the 'top' you never play.

Unfortunately, the episodes in NYPD Blue are on both sides of all the discs, so the inevitable fingerprints (and I imagine scratches, sooner or later) prevent you playing episodes. Not to mention that out of the box I had issues playing them on one of my DVD players. I don't know if it's bending the spec on compression, oversized discs, or some exotic new copy-protection mod, but I will say this: I resent buying discs that appear designed to fail and cost me to replace later on. I, for one, would gladly pay extra for the single-sided DVDs and larger packaging they used previously. I'm Extremely unhappy with the new packaging\discs and would advise anyone looking to get the series to think twice if they have problems with newer or dual-sided DVDs.

Short form? Horrible changes I suspect were just to boost a profit margin at the fans' expense. Not only am I unlikely to pick up Season 5 or later if they stick with the format, I'm seriously considering unloading what I already bought.

5 out of 5 stars Never too late to watch NYPD.......2007-05-24

although not new by any means, all of the NYPD episodes are great. Never have had watched these on TV (I despise commercials), but have gotten addicted to the characters in this show even though I am ten years or so late. I don't like the shaky camera angles but since I view this while jogging, they are just long enough, exciting enough, to enjoy every episode. You won't be disappointed and they very much apply to what the NYs finest I am sure are doing these days. Good stuff. Enjoy!

Soul Food, the richly emotional ongoing tale of three African American sisters and the men in their lives, has no obvious hook as far as the setting or the characters' jobs; it's just well-written, well-acted, and willing to let its characters be difficult, troubled, and pushy, as well as sexy, passionate, and caring--in other words, vividly real. Teri (Nicole Ari Parker), a divorced lawyer and demanding control freak, begins a relationship with Damon (Boris Kodjoe), a much younger delivery guy who's deliberately avoided the kind of high-pressure career path that Teri values. Maxine (Vanessa Williams) has three kids by Kenny (Rockmond Dunbar), including 12-year-old Ahmad (Aaron Meeks), who narrates portions of the show, and whose growing independence often leads to clashes with his strong-minded mother. Bird (Malinda Williams), a beautician, struggles to find trust with her ex-con husband Lem (Darrin Dewitt Henson), whose drive to support his family leads him down some dangerous paths.

The opening episode centers around the birth of Bird's first child, placing family ties at the core of the series--but Soul Food explores a broad spectrum of storylines, delving into class, crime, religion, sex, and more, rarely making race a central concern, yet never ignoring the role race plays in these people's lives. The creators of Soul Food have a keen eye for contrasting innocence (such as Ahmad trying to figure out how to use a condom) and danger (Lem slipping back into the criminal life). Though the show can be melodramatic (one episode features a hostage crisis in Bird's salon), more often it's just concerned with everyday events, made compelling by the charisma of the cast and the propulsive, well-observed writing and directing. The first season of Soul Food is simply a feast, 20 episodes of juicy, enjoyable television. --Bret Fetzer

Description

Focusing on a family full of love, disagreements and a fair amount of drama, SOUL FOOD: THE COMPLETE FIRST SEASON follows the lives of Teri Joseph (Parker), the oldest sister and a successful lawyer who is overwhelmed by her own success, Maxine (Vanessa Williams), the middle sister who is a stay-at-home mom aching for something more, and Bird (Malinda Williams), the youngest sister and hairdresser who is married to an ex-con who can't seem to get away from his past. All in all a fairly typical American family with issues just like everyone else: they bicker over small problems, and then pull together when confronted by a big crisis which they must work together to overcome.

5 out of 5 stars Soul Food - The First Season.......2007-08-06

I enjoyed watching the series and pleased with Amazon's quick response. I received damaged discs but when I notified Amazon of this; Amazon quickly mailed a new copy. This exceeded my expectations. This was my first time using Amazon and after this experience, it will not be the last.

5 out of 5 stars SOUL FOOD-1st Season.......2007-02-04

This compilation embodies everything I enjoy in a movie: family, relationships, beautiful people and just "keeping it real" storylines. I subscribed to Showtime just so I can capture Soul Food every week. I've had nothing to replace the void that its entertainment filled. I've looked for subsequent seasons to come to DVD for the last 3 years; disappointing when you see Green Acres or Family Ties end up on DVD's but can't seem to get something we can relate to (modern day). I've even sent a letter to Paramount--to no avail. I'm sure when I stop looking the other seasons will soon show up on DVD. CAN'T WAIT!!!

5 out of 5 stars I WANT TO SEE MORE!!!.......2007-01-27

I really enjoyed the Soul Food- First Season. Some of the episodes I saw on the 5 discs, I hadn't seen before. It was great to catch up on what I had missed.By the time I got to the last disc, I was upset because I knew there were no more discs to watch. I HOPE YOU GUYS WILL BE COMING OUT WITH THE "COMPLETE SECOND SEASON". You definitely have a buyer here!

Originally broadcast in 1994, the second season of NYPD Blue was disrupted by the departure of star David Caruso (Detective John Kelly) after just four episodes, under apparently less than amicable circumstances. He was ably replaced as Detective Sipowicz's partner by Jimmy Smits as the smoother Detective Bobby Simone, and the series managed not to miss a beat.

More streamlined and downbeat than its predecessor, Hill Street Blues (also created by Steven Bochco), NYPD Blue continued second time around to mix near-the-knuckle detective work to foil New York's scummiest with more character- and relationship-based drama. Although it's regrettable that its ethnic minority characters, such as Lieutenant Fancy, are increasingly marginalized here, the series is more comfortable--and even has fun--with regular characters such as the nervy Detective Medavoy and his on-off paramour Donna Abandando. Andy Sipowicz's simmering, tough-nosed recovering alcoholic is increasingly and amusingly put to the test in a number of situations, including: a murder investigation in a gay bar; being sung to at his own wedding by Nic Turturro's Detective Martinez; and a love scene in the shower in which we experience the dubious pleasure of seeing his bare rear.

New female introductions, such as the strong but sympathetic Detective Lesniak, also helped to shake up the series with a much-needed estrogen boost. There's also fun to be had in spotting a number of guest appearances by up-and-coming actors destined to make it in their own right such as Richard Schiff and Bradley Whitford (The West Wing) and Debra Messing (Will & Grace).

The DVD set contains a number of extras, primarily a one-hour documentary in which the cast and crew discuss the series episode by episode, the self-congratulatory mood broken only by some subtle digs at departing star David Caruso (apparently, he walked straight off the set following his final take into a waiting limo without any farewells). There's also a small piece paying tribute to the music of theme-writer Mike Post and an item covering the relationship between Sipowicz and Assistant DA Sylvia Costas, in whose marriage this series culminates. --David Stubbs

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Very Interesting series.......2007-09-01

I purchased this DVD because of David Caruso who starred in its first season. Then when I got into it I had to have the other seasons as well. It is a well written and very well acted series. Pretty raw for the 90s when it was shown, but tame by todays standards.
I just wonder IF New York city is that conjested and crowded, the 15th precinct shows a down and dirty part of the city. I enjoy the series, but sorry NY is a place I would definately wouldn't want to live.

3 out of 5 stars Gary Hoyt.......2007-07-25

Wasn't to hot on this DVD. Story lines weren't the greatest and for some reason the cameraman goes up down left right at high rates of speed almost making you dizzy trying to keep up with the changing (too rapidly)
scenes. My choose is Hill St. Blues over NYPD.

5 out of 5 stars From drama to soap opera.......2007-03-23

By seeing the shows back-to-back, the minor characters seem to fit the continuing story more than could be caught in weekly episodes. What appeared to be side bar stories during the weekly exposure, have become a master story where sub-plots run throughout the season and tie together beautifully. If you liked the network run, you'll love the DVD's.

5 out of 5 stars best police drama ever.......2007-03-02

I think NYPD Blue is the best writen, acted and directed police drama ever and I wanted to share it with my Husband who did not have the opportunity to watch the show when it was first on the air.

Having the DVD's makes it possible to finally see the shows I missed.

5 out of 5 stars Blue Review - Season 2.......2007-01-19

Awesome!!! I can't wait to get more NYPD Blue. I really enjoyed the show while it was on TV. It is good to watch it on DVD's, also. I definately would recommend it for all to watch.

3 out of 5 stars The Last of His Tribe.......2007-08-29

A good movie based on fact. A sad story about our history with an up beat plot. The acting and the story are worth watching.

1 out of 5 stars this movie was not that great.......2007-06-26

this movie was not some of their best work. It was probably fantastic twenty years ago, but it left a lot to be desired these days. It was kind of bland, very dull, and just not something I would recommend.

4 out of 5 stars California History.......2007-06-09

This film shows the side of Californias history that no one wants to talk about. It makes you realize how important it is to hold on to our family culture, and history no matter what your background. This is a film anyone who lives in California, or anywhere for that matter should watch.

5 out of 5 stars Praise for "Last of His Tribe".......2007-03-31

I remember first seeing this as a play when I was about 10 years old performend by a community theater group. It was so powerful, the story stuck with me for years. The movie is also powerful, and allows the viewer to see the perspective and dilemnas that anthropologists faced (and still face), and also allows the viewer to see Ishi's perspective and world view.

Another good film is the documentary, "Ishi, Last of the Yahi". Both are great for older kids (middle school and up) studying US or California history.

From the golden age of television miniseries comes this prestigious 1979 production based on Lillian Rogers Parks's memoir, My Thirty Years at the White House, a real-life American Upstairs/Downstairs that chronicles her family's tenure on the White House servant staff through eight presidential administrations. Emmy nominee Oliva Cole stars as Maggie, a proud matriarch with "indomitable spirit and unfailing spunk," and who is determined that her children "are not going to have street ways." She becomes the first colored maid on the presidential family floor, beginning with the William Howard Taft administration. Her polio-stricken daughter, Lillian (portrayed as an adult by Leslie Uggams) eventually joins her during Herbert Hoover's administration and likewise rises through the ranks to to become a trusted confidante of the First Families.

Backstairs at the White House works on several levels. It is the inspiring personal story of two extraordinary women who had a unique and privileged perspective of the people and events that shaped the first half of the 20th century. It also presents vivid snapshots of the presidents and their families in all their quirks (Mrs. Taft felt that bearded servants brought bad luck), failings, and greatness, as well as such now-obscure personages as New York critic Alexander Woolcott. The stellar cast is comprised of stage and screen veterans and TV favorites. Robert Vaughn (as Woodrow Wilson), Celeste Holm (as Florence Harding), and Ed Flanders (as Calvin Coolidge) were nominated for Emmys, as was Roots costar Louis Gossett Jr. as houseman Levi Mercer. Also notable are a pre-Airplane Leslie Nielsen as chief White House usher Ike Hoover, Cloris Leachman as the chilly supervising housekeeper Mrs. Jaffray, Victor Buono and Julie Harris as reluctant president William Howard Taft and his more formidable wife "Nellie," Eileen Heckart as energetic Eleanor Roosevelt, and Harry Morgan, giving 'em hell as Harry Truman. Backstairs at the White can be melodramatic ("You're not married to me, you're married to the White House," Lillian's estranged husband tells her at one point), but it never descends to soap opera. The Emmy-winning makeup is convincing, and the Emmy-nominated screenplay does an admirable job of compressing more than 50 years of history. "What is heard within the walls of the White House is to be forgotten," Maggie is instructed early in her employ. Luckily, daughter Lillian ignored this directive to create a compelling document that puts a human face on the occupants of the real West Wing. --Donald Liebenson

5 out of 5 stars Best Movie Ever And A Blast From The Past!.......2007-09-09

Backstairs at the White House came out when I was just a kid and I've never forgotten the impact it had on my young life. It was amazing to see how things worked at the White House from the servants point of view. It was honest and refreshing to learn the truth without all the political nonsense that goes with it! I would recommend this movie to anyone.

5 out of 5 stars For my Grandma...........2007-09-03

I was a 10 yr old boy when this mini-series aired on NBC. It was "appointment tv" that week for me and my grandma, "Nana". I had been looking for this for YEARS and it was by chance that I discovered it just randomly searching on Amazon. I didn't hesitate to buy it. The acting, writing, directing et al....remarkable! Olivia Cole and Leslie Uggams at the top of their games. This one will be special for me, particularly when I recall the memory of seeing with Nana, who has since passed on. Thank you, NBC.

5 out of 5 stars Long Lost Mini-Series.......2007-06-09

I remember this series back when it was premiered in the 70's. I loved it then and wanted to see it again but never found it scheduled. I was thrilled to see it reissued in DVD. Watching it brought back so many memories and I found it still had the charm and splendid acting I remembered from so many years ago. Seeing behind the closed doors of the White House gave a glimpse of a part of history we never see. I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Great Historical Miniseries.......2007-05-15

I watched this mini-series when it orignally aired in 1979 when I was 10 years old. It aired over serveral weeks and my family would gather around the TV to watch it. I have been talking about this series since I was ten and have been dying to see again. I cannot tell you how excited I was to see that it had been released on DVD. The minute that I discovered it, I placed my order. It is a great piece of history, with a great cast and I urge everyone to see it.

5 out of 5 stars Backstairs at the Whitehouse.......2007-04-04

This is an excellent series for people of all ages. It is an interesting look at all of the personalities who lived in the White House throughout the years. I have read the book and the series covers much of the same information. You feel sad when the series comes to the end as you wish it could continue!

The idea of a soulful pimp as the hero of a movie will strike some viewers as objectionable and perhaps even repellent, but Terrence Dashon Howard's complex and fierce performance will challenge such easy moral decisions. DJay (Howard, Crash, The Best Man) hustles a small stable of whores, including corn-rowed Nola (Taryn Manning, A Lot Like Love). When he learns that former local rapper turned superstar named Skinny Black (real life rapper Ludacris) is coming back to town for the 4th of July, DJay teams up with a frustrated sound engineer (Anthony Anderson, Kangaroo Jack) and a geeky musician (DJ Qualls, Road Trip) to put together a demo tape that he hopes will be his ticket to fame and fortune. What's most impressive about Hustle & Flow is that it doesn't oversell its hero. DJay's aspirations are more economic than poetic--he's not out to create art, he just wants a better life. This lack of pretension allows the movie to capture a genuine sense of how creativity can improve people's lives, which surprises DJay as much as anyone. The movie's other strength is a keen eye for social behavior, in particular the ways in which DJay manipulates everyone around him. Howard, who's almost always stood out in every movie he's made, plays these scenes with what can only be called smooth desperation. The entire cast gives substantial performances, but it's Howard who drives the movie irresistibly forward. --Bret Fetzer

Product Description

DJay is a Memphis hustler who spends most days in a parked Chevy philosophizing about life while Nola (Taryn Manning), turn tricks in the backseat. He's not very good at pimping, but he can hustle almost anything or anyone and makes enough to keep himself and three girls satisfied and housed in his shotgun home. DJay however is in the midst of a midlife crisis; he quietly harbors dreams of becoming a respected rapper. When he learns from a local club owner, Arnel (Isaac Hayes), that rap mogul Skinny Black (Ludacris), is rolling through town, DJay decides to record his flow with the hopes of slipping his demo to Skinny. With little help from his friends and "family" DJay sets in motion the hustle of his life, and galvanizes the lives of those around him as they learn that "Everybody's gotta have a dream."

5 out of 5 stars Cool.......2007-09-04

May seem a bit slow in the beginning or appear like it's the typical story you've seen before, but nothing will prepair your for the outcome. I think it was a well done.

4 out of 5 stars Memphis, Baby.......2007-08-16

Memphis has had her poets, oh yes, think of Elvis, Tennessee Williams, Peter Taylor, William Faulkner, but now because there is a God after all, Memphis is to be immortalized on film. This is a sweet tale of striving, that classic American theme, a guy who wants to make good in a cruelly indifferent world. Oh how glorious is the confrontation in the toilet between the nobody (Terrence Howard), who wants to make it, and the somebody (Ludacris), who doesn't care. Isn't that epic? The film captures the beauty of Memphis ugliness, that odd desolation that has inspired so much artistic beauty. The soundtrack is fantastic, the acting pitch perfect, the setting magical. One wishes the best to the director.

4 out of 5 stars Good Actor!.......2007-08-14

I just love Terrance Howard. I think he is a versatile actor who can play any type role given him. He makes you feel his character with objectivity!

1 out of 5 stars Sorry folks, can't get with it!.......2007-07-29

I saw this on DVD (from the library, thank goodness). This is grossly overrated exploitation junk. Can't get with it!

This film expects the audience to have pity on Terrence Howard as a pimp named DJay who aspires to be a rapper. First of all, the character is about 35 years old, a bit old to start off as a rapper. Secondly, we see him doing things like (literally) throwing a prostitute AND HER BABY out of his house, forcing a teenage prostitute to have sex with an elderly music store owner to get a microphone he can't afford, and generally using and manipulating everyone around him.

Then he tries to get over by making such lovely, creative masterpieces of art as "It's Hard Out Here for a Pimp" and "Whip That Trick" which both of his prostitutes gleefully dance to the beat of their own destruction.

No thanks, y'all. 30 years ago, the "blaxploitation" trashterpiece films corrupted too many ignorant and guidance-deprived youths of that generation into thinking that it was cool to be a pimp or a drug dealer. Their children the gangster rappers have done enough damage in recent years without films like this to deceive the young and ignorant. The people who push trash like this are the REAL pimps and I have no love for this! Farmers, show this to your cows to produce more fertilizer!

2 out of 5 stars Not my taste.......2007-07-29

I really like Terrence Howard. His performance in this movie to me was sub-par. I just could not get into it.
