One of those movies that helped usher out the era of action films that had plots that made any sense (and also helped reverse the direction of Patrick Swayze's career arc), Road House concerns a handsome, existential bouncer in a rinky-dink honky-tonk who owns both a degree in philosophy and a Mercedes. And that's perhaps the most believable aspect of the whole movie. Swayze stars as Dalton, "the best bouncer in the business," who runs afoul of Wesley (Ben Gazzara), the meanest SOB round these parts, by taking up with his former girlfriend, Doc (Kelly Lynch)--the only woman in town with an IQ approaching double digits, even if she had unfathomably hooked up with such a lowlife. Swayze had complained about being typecast as beefcake when this was made, but that didn't stop him from revealing as much skin as possible--even guys like him, as revealed in a luridly seedy scene in which one of Wesley's goons tells Dalton that he reminds him of the kind of boyfriend he had in prison (albeit in much saltier terms). It's so insulting to its audience that it's nice to be able to turn the tables and laugh at the filmmakers. --David Kronke

Description

Patrick Swayze stars in this sexy, "violent tough-guy thriller" (Fort Worth Star-Telegram) from the producer of Die Hard and The Matrix. Co-starring Ben Gazzara (The Thomas Crown Affair), Kelly Lynch (Charlie's Angels) and Sam Elliott (We Were Soldiers), Road House delivers no-holds-barred action that pushes the envelope for high-octane thrills! Swayze is Dalton, a legendary bouncer who comes to Jasper, Missouri, for a special purpose: to restore order at the notorious Double Deuce bar. In one spectacular fight after another, Dalton rids the bar of thugs and henchmen. But when he runs afoul of a ruthless crime boss (Gazzara) who controls the town, the stage is set for a blistering showdown that'll leave only one man standing!

4 out of 5 stars 80's-tastic........2007-09-07

Incredibly-great bad movie. Sam Elliot with a great supporting role. Don't overlook this just because of the Swayze factor. Decent special features (Kevin Smith included.)
Great flick.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent purchase.......2007-09-05

Great purchase, arrived quickly, movie plays flawlessly and great! 5 + stars GRADE A all the way across the boards. Would recommend this seller and would do business again!

3 out of 5 stars A film of its time , just enjoy for its' own sake.......2007-07-13

This wouldn't have won 'Best Film' at all , but it is entertaining if you are in the right mood .

The commentary by Kevin Smith was part of the reason I bought it and I was not disappointed .

A film for the weekend with some friends around , especially those who lived through the time it was being made , for the fashions at least !

In the end , it was a worthwhile purchase .
If you want serious film , buy a Criterion Collection DVD .

4 out of 5 stars very dirty dancing.......2007-06-15

If Dirty Dancing is Patrick Swayze for the girls, then Road House is Patrick Swayze for the boys. This is what I'd like to call pure trash action. Great action thats highly entertaining, but accompanied by a ton of nudity and strong language that may not suite everyone. A strong R rating for Road House, but still ends up being a very enjoyable film, thanks to Mr. Swayze who takes out the trash.

Road House is a typicall full of action movie with a no brain story that actually makes that no brain story as interesting as can be, and placing enough action throughout to make the whole movie worth just about every minute. Pacing is wonderful, and I was totally engaged. Even watching it late at night kept me wide awake. The fights are great, and the fights are wild. I always figured there would be some crazy bar fights, but some, especially at the beginning of the film, are really crazy. Patrick Swayze did some study up on martial arts for this film, and he even has a scene practicing his katra. He gets a good fight against a guy named Jimmy, who is basically one of the bigger bad guys of the film, working under the boss. Its a hard hitting fight that goes on for a few minutes, and then has a wicked ending that I won't say.

Nothing much else to say about the film. Its a great action pleaser. For years I kept igonoring Road House thinking it was a pointless movie about pointless bar fights. Its actually better than expected. Considered a B movie all the way, I have to say its possibly the best B movie ever created.

3 out of 5 stars Schmaltz with violence.......2007-06-11

Patrick Swaze plays our hero, a combination of philosopher, tough guy, and knight errant, sort of a modern day Don Quixote. Sam Elliott makes the movie for me, he's a presence even in a B grade movie. Sam should be placed as the cowboy iamgo, he looks the part, sounds the part and as far as I'm concerned can outact "The Duke" any day of the week in a cowboy role.

This does not include what I consider to be Wayne's classic picture "The Quiet Man", in that he was superb.

Back to Road house, why Ben Gazarra played his role the way he did is beyond me, he sounds, looks and behaves like a character from an old Looney Tunes cartoon that lampoons crime characters.

I got it because I like to see the bad guys lose.

This unexpected sequel to the camp-cult favorite Road House delivers much of the same fast-n-furious action as its predecessor, though die-hard fans (and they're out there) might miss the over-the-top dialogue and plot devices that earned the original its reputation. Patrick Swayze, who starred in the first Road House picture, is nowhere to be found in the sequel--instead, it's Jonathan Schaech as a DEA agent with a connection to Swayze's character who comes to the aid of his uncle (Will Patton in a rare non-villainous role), the owner of a Louisiana bar that's come under siege by a local drug dealer (Jake Busey, who chews scenery with vigor). What follows is a barrage of bar brawls and room-wrecking stunts as Schaech takes his rightful place as the world's toughest bouncer. Suffice it to say that if you own the first Road House movie (or at least watched it more than once), you'll find the sequel a worthwhile follow-up. --Paul Gaita

4 out of 5 stars loses the feel of the original but still good stuff.......2007-06-19

Its a B movie, but its a well made B movie that entertains, though not quite as much as the first Road House. I expected no relation to the first Road House with this sequal, but there is. Jonathan Schaech plays a DEA agent, who is the son of Patrick Swayze's character from the first Road House. He takes over running the bar for his Uncle (Will Patton) who is in the hospital after getting the beat down from the movie bad guy, played by Jake Busey. The same "3 bar rules" are applied from the first movie. And as things progress, more and more becomes too much in common with the first Road House. I found that ok though, since most of the charcaters and action provided good entertainment for an hour and half.
One thing is for sure, the presence of Swayze is not felt at all in this film from Schaech, who semmed a bit bland. In fact, the whole movie is toned down from the first. But thats not to say there still isn't a good deal of action. Jake Busey, typical B movie actor, actually does a decent job of coming off as a decent villain, though he can seem like an over aged brat at times. One of the best treats is actor Richard Norton, playing the head boss. He is obviously showing signs of aging these days, but manages to still get in a good fight scene and pull of the villain role swiftly.
As for action, don't expect any crazy bar fights like the first Road House, but there are more one on one fights that are quite fun to watch. Schaech gets in a good fight with both Richard Norton and Jake Busey, both about the best scenes in the movie.
If you enjoyed Road House, this sequal is worth checking out. The similarities may be dissapointing, but you get more solid action to add to the fuel.

1 out of 5 stars Watch this for the action, just don't buy it!.......2007-04-21

Roadhouse two is a cute premise, trying to milk the idea of the original movie.

DEA agent Sahne Tanner (Jonathan Schaech) is the son of Dalton from the original film. Many times during this film, his character is told sorry about his father's death. that is the only real connection from this film to the other.

Will Patton's acting is under used as Tanner's Uncle Nate who owns a Louiisana roadhouse on the river, the Black Pelican. Tanner comes to help his Uncle Nate. Jake (Gary's son) Busey plays Wild Bill, the local drug dealer/gangster who wants the Pelican for his own base of operation and will do anything to get it.

The film is filled with action and low on plot. Not really what i call entertainment

SPOILER ALERT (DONT READ UNLESS YOU WANT TO KNOW!)-Busey Character tell Tanner that he killed Dalton, The epic finally battles ensues with the ending we all can see what happened through out the whole movie

Lets say this, I hope there isnt a ROADHOUSE THREE

3 out of 5 stars The Second best movie about Bouncers?.......2006-09-16

Roadhouse has become an inarguable cult classic. It was well made, had some decent actors in it, had some good fight sequences, hot women, and was tongue in cheek funny (whether the latter was intended or not.) Roadhouse 2 is a by-the-numbers sequel in almost every sense. It is basically the same as its namesake only not as good. It was a shame that the film-makers were unable to get Patrick "Dalton" Swayze to commit to making the sequel to reprise his role, if nothing else as a mentor to the next generation of world-famous bouncers. In this era of direct to video sequels of older movies in the attempt to create new "franchises" you could do worse than Roadhouse 2.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting Sequel--just don't buy a copy........2006-07-25

This sequel was certainly better than I thought it would be. Will Patton, who plays the brother of Dalton (Pat Swalze) from the original film keeps the sequel together with his excellent acting. The film, however, is just too similiar to the 1st and it kind of loses your interest halfway thru--its so perdictable. The fight scenes are pretty good but any film with Jake Busey in it is just an average B movie---the guy can't act for sure. This film is worth a look--rent it-don't buy it--stick to the original one with better actors.

5 out of 5 stars Very valuable self defense DVD, not to be missed.......2007-08-03

My background: some years of informal judo/karate training and went back to shotokan karate class this year. As I got more interested in self defense issues, and martial art more suitable to street practice, I decided to buy this DVD. I had no previous knowledge of Hapkido, and I must say this dvd made me discover a new meaning of self defense martial arts. sounds and image are high quality, instructions are all very clear, Master Sexton (besides being 6th degree black belt) provides no-nonsense explanations wich are easy to follow. In maybe a total of 50 tecniques, I would say only 5-6 are a little too complex to be implemented in the stress of a street fight, the rest is pretty doable and devastating. That is, as Master Sexton puts it, with daily practice until you can repeat the tecs at lightining speed.
I would incourage to buy this dvd especially those people who focus a more self defense approach. One thing to note though: to practice you will absolutely need a sparring parntner, as all tecniques make use of grabs, holds and throws (judo alike) which practices solo aren't much effective.
In sum, a very good product.

4 out of 5 stars "Lapel" grabs? Ugh!!.......2006-12-02

What is up with that??? Why would something claiming to deal with self-defense incorporate the practice uniform into their techniques? What is up with them always wearing them silly pajamas? They should be demonstrating in normal civilian clothes if they want to claim to be for self-defense!! I only knocked one star off for that because the damn lapel/Gi whatever they call it seems to be unavoidable anywhere!, why don't they just burn them dumb things and get rid of them once and for all! You're trying to learn how to save your life and they are only interested in practicing in comfortable clothing? A lot of good stuff in here and reasonably priced at $30 for over 3 hours. But I just had to rant about them silly robes, if I ever get attacked by someone wearing a bath rub I will know just what to do! We are all safe from being attacked by Hugh Hefner.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Job Teaching Hapkido Defenses.......2006-10-01

I have quite a collection of martial arts instructional videos (over a hundred) and I rate Steve's videos up at the top of my collection. Being an instructor myself, I am always looking to make my classes more interesting. Steve does a great job of getting his information across with a common sense and down to earth approach.

5 out of 5 stars "Hapkido Ultimate Self-Defense" actually teaches self-defense techniques to the viewer........2006-07-31

While many martial arts videos and DVDs demonstrate self-defense techniques, "Hapkido Ultimate Self-Defense" actually teaches self-defense techniques to the viewer.

The DVD set consists of three DVDs, each of which is about 90 minutes in length. Techniques in these DVDs include:
>Stances >Single & Double Wrist-hold Escapes
>Blocks >Lapel-hold Escapes
>Kicks >Pushing Attack Defense
>Break-falls >Defense Against Belt Grabs
>Defense Against Rear Grabs
>Defense Against Chokeholds
>Defense Against Knife and Gun Attacks
>Techniques For Using the Cane for Self-defense
... and much more.

Steve Sexton explains each technique, breaks down each movement, demonstrates the techniques slowly and then at moderate and full-speeds. By following along with the DVD instruction and then practicing the techniques with a partner you can learn to effectively apply these Hapkido self-defense techniques.

Each technique is a basic, simple and most importantly workable technique that can be learned and used by anyone. These techniques will work on the street, in a real self-defense situation and don't require years of martial arts training to learn.

If you are looking for a way to learn some workable, basic self-defense skill... "Hapkido Ultimate Self-Defense" is a good place to start.

5 out of 5 stars Worth The Money.......2006-06-27

In this information he breaks down everything in a simple to follow format. It would be well worth the money.

It did bring back memories of visiting master Steve Sexton's Hapkido school in Canoga Park CA In the early 80's. To watch him move and teach, It was very moving, and powerful, at the time Fariborz Azhakh was an assistant instructor.

Description

Every now and then something happens that thrust custom motorcycling, and its associated lifestyle blinking into the glare of the spotlight. Life magazine started the ball rolling in 1947 with their Hollister cover story, it was picked up by The Wild One in '53, and then Easy Rider in 1969. There has been a myriad selection of others with lurid titles and plotlines since, the majority has been commercially, and shamelessly exploiting the genre, or the fears of an impressionable public, with few breaking the surface and establishing a fan base.

Choppertown, the independently produced film by One World Studios, is up there with the giants as a potentially life-changing classic that will find a broad audience, not least among men, and could re-establish a grass-roots motorcycle culture. Strangely compulsive viewing, it is a frank, intimate and disarming look at the relationships of a group of exclusively male riders - the Sinners of the title - centered around the story of one member, Kutty Noteboom, building his first ground-up bike with the help of fellow Sinner, Rico, and his workshop. ~from American V-twin Magazine, July 2006

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Choppertown: The Sinners.......2007-02-23

One of the best motorcycle DVDs I've seen in years! Shows the life that most of us would love to live. I definitely recommend this DVD to any biker.

5 out of 5 stars A "real" movie about bikes........2006-11-28

When I started to watch this movie, I really was not sure what to expect. I thought that maybe this movie was going to be just another show about putting expensive bikes together. I was pleasantly surprised that it wasn't anything like that. This movie caught my attention for it was about real people, living real lives, who enjoy building and riding motorcycles. Being a motorcycle rider myself, I can relate to the passion these guys have. I can see it in their actions and over all philosophy of how they live their lives. This movie does a great job bringing this out as well the loyalty these guys have to their friends. This is something that is real, not fake, and should be watched by anyone who rides.

5 out of 5 stars cool and different.......2006-11-26

i really liked this movie because it turns conventional documentary structure on its head and really gives the impression of riding along with this fascinating group of people. it felt like one of alex cox's movies "straight to hell" or "sid and nancy" because of the cool organic way the music was mixed in. a great indie effort.

5 out of 5 stars It is about so much more than bikes, though the bikes rock!.......2006-11-24

I love this movie. There are so many things good to say about it, but perhaps the best thing about this is that they nailed what bikes are about. It is about brotherhood, hanging with your bros, loyalty.... The bikes are amazing, but you don't have to like bikes to identify with the movie. Anybody who cares about their friends will get something out of it.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome!.......2006-11-23

There isn't really anything else like this on the market so I wasn't sure what to think, but it took me into a world I hadn't experienced before and left me thinking about it afterwards. An indie gem...great music too!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Film Noir Boxed Set.......2007-03-28

I have watched about half of these movies & so far all of them have been very good, in fact, much better than I expected. I find Dana Andrews to be a very compelling leading man & the actresses in all of these are superb as well. I hope Fox will resolve their issues with "Boomerang" which is #16 in the set, (which is not included with your purchase) so that I can add this one to the collection. My only complaint is that this collection is not really a boxed set. It is simply 17 great film noir DVD's shrink-wrapped together. However, this is a great value & lots of these titles are being released for the first time in this set. Highly recommended for those who like the genre.

4 out of 5 stars remember...no 16 Boomerang is still missing.......2007-03-18

This set misses out no.16 "Boomerang". It got recalled at the eleventh hour by Fox because of a legal tangle.
You can find it on sale for $45.00 on amazon marketplace, because it was actually printed and ready to go.
Clearly a few boxes have found their way out the back door!!!!
But despite that wee dissapointment you'll love the rest.
Hopefully Fox will sort out the mess soon..... and then you can plug the gap without having to shell out silly money.

3 out of 5 stars better price (than list) to start your collection, but not the best deal on noir.......2007-03-12

I haven't yet purchased these titles & was just about to, until I checked up on what's included with the current bundle (March 1 2007) that Amazon is offering. As previously mentioned, this is not a box set (misleading description from Amazon), but rather a bundle of the first 17 titles in Fox's noir series. I purchased the Warner Bros.' boxes 1-3 (and reviewed them there) which I thought were an excellent value for the money (when on sale, roughly 6 - 7$ per disc). I've held off on these since the price is higher. This bundle discounts the titles to about $8 per disc, which is better than the usual price for each, but a local retailer often sells these titles for 7.50 - 10.00 (with a buy 3 get 1 free sale). Still I would have jumped on this price had this been a bonafide box set with the slimmer DVD cases, but these regular dvd's will take up quite a bit of real estate in my storage. Moreover, the more recent titles aren't included (missing titles: Boomerang, 14 Hours, Shock, Vicki, all released last year). If Fox would release all the titles to date (plus the next releases: Hangover Square & The Lodger) in slim cases & a box at a comparable price I'll jump, otherwise I'm holding out for a better deal.

3 out of 5 stars Don't Forget This One Too................2006-03-05

For some reason the Fox Noir release Dark Corner (Mark Stevens, Lucille Ball, Clifton Webb, William Bendix) doesn't get much coverage under the typical outlets for obtaining these Fox Noir titles, Amazon included. I didn't even know the title was even out there, but it is, and it is quite a Noir gem. I say this without hesitation because I was never a Lucy fan at all. But in this one, she's actually pretty cool. Too bad she went goofy in later life (I guess it paid the bills).
If you like the Fox Noir series and Noir in general, don't forget this one too. I got mine from Tower Records (seems hard to find for some reason). The famous "peering through the venetian blinds" scene that you see stills of all the time, that's Mark Stevens. A somewhat overlooked actor in Noir circuit, but he can hold up to any of the other more noted ones in my opinion. Check it out.

5 out of 5 stars An indispensable series for aficionados of film noir.......2006-01-10

The Fox film noir collection is an "Amazon.com exclusive" consisting of 9 DVDS in their individual cases (alas including individual shrink wrap, which one tediously has to remove) presented in one blister pack. The nine titles are:
*** BATCH 1 (DVDs released 3/05): Call Northside 777 (1948); Laura (1944); Panic in the streets (1950)
*** BATCH 2 (DVDs released 6/05): House of bamboo (1955); Nightmare alley (1947); Street with no name (1948)
*** BATCH 3 (DVDs released 9/05): House on 92nd Street (1945); Somewhere in the night (1946); Whirlpool (1949)

The film restorations are superbly done. The DVD cases are in uniform format, being part of the "Fox film noir" series. Each title has a film commentary (Laura has two) plus other extras, minimally a trailer. In addition, each title has a 4-page booklet with these sections: "the lineup," "the look," "the scoop," "the story," and "scene selection."

The DVDs list for $14.95 each and currently Amazon sells them for around $10 each. Amazon sells the 9-DVD collection for $74.99, which works out to $8.33 for each DVD. Certainly, not all titles are of the caliber of Laura (1944), but this collection is a must-have for the firm-noir aficionado.

Incidentally, BATCH 4, was released 12/05 and consists of: The dark corner (1946); Kiss of death (1947); Where the sidewalk ends (1950). BATCH 5 will be released in 3/06: Fallen angel (1945); House on Telegraph Hill (1951); No way out (1950)

Alain Silver & Elizabeth Ward's "Film noir: An encyclopedic reference to the American style" (1992, 3rd ed.) lists 32 noir titles by Fox. Hence we can probably expect from Fox another 20 or so titles in the "Fox film noir" series. If these 32ish titles all materialize in this excellent series, it will be a big chunk both out of one's purse and DVD shelf space.

3 out of 5 stars A big step down from the prior season........2007-07-23

A big step down from season-six, which was a step down from season five.
Felix and Felicity are all grown up. Felix and Felicity are very serious, in great contrast to their expression and joy as children. The real Cecily is missing. The absence of the charming young children is quite noticeable. Does not have the humor or charm of earlier seasons. Sarah appears in the last episode as a guest at the party. Four of the thirteen episodes are worth watching again.

The "behind-the-scenes" is really a preview of the series, "Wind At My Back", and some very short behind-the-scenes clips from behind-the-scenes of earlier seasons of "Road to Avonlea" that you have already seen if you have bought the prior seasons' DVD's. Nothing new. Someone has truth issues.

Episodes:
1. FAIR and pleasant.
Town debating whether to start an orphanage. Never brings out the personalities of the characters. Felicity's dating a new boyfriend does not work with a picture of Felicity and Gus getting married on the cover of the DVD. What were they thinking?
2. GOOD.
Romance between Izzy & Felix, Olivia & Jasper. Has some charm, thoughtfulness, and romance in scenic surroundings. Given Sarah is gone, and the real Cecily is gone, and Felicity reduces her appearances, the writers should have done more stories with the established and likeable character, Izzy Pettibone, as well as Olivia and Jasper. Izzy is quite expressive in contrast to Felix's impassiveness. Thus, they should have paired Izzy with someone else.
3. POOR.
Davey and the bad carnival people. Davey's infatuation with the carnival mermaid. Written for six year-old minds, unbelievable and mindless. None of the characters are themselves. The writer appears to never have watched the series. Davey should sue the writer for ruining his career.
4. GOOD.
Izzy's unusal Aunt comes to visit. A different Morgan Pettibone breaks believability in a story about family.
5. FAIR.
Aunt Abigail comes to visit. A different Malcom and Cecily break believability. They would have done better to leave these characters out entirely if unable to acquire the original actors. The person who decided to replace well-liked actors likely has had several divorces without a thought; reveals a move to shallowness by the writers and producers of the series; an inability to appreciate what made the earlier seasons great. The attempt at humor is unsuccessful and the story is not interesting. Watchable because many of characters we like are in it.
6. FAIR.
Big city Broadway songwriters come to town. Would have been much better if the songwriters were portrayed likeable, with a better song for Alec who does sing well. The songwriters were guests, and the second plot with Selena Dale amounts to a second guest, which is one too many guest plots, sacrificing depth with the regular characters. Too thin a script that was promising. A missed opportunity to bring in guest stars who could also sing well for a musical episode of joy.
7. FAIR.
Felix overbooks the hotel is promising but uneventful for lack of focus. Should have kept the older woman guest, demanding, instead of making her an end-of-the-world nut, because it changes her from being a demanding guest to a crazy guest. The otherwise excellent writer, strayed from focus in a story about Felix taking on too much to handle.
8. FAIR.
Contest between schools. The script is pleasant, but does not have the charm and humor of earlier seasons.
9. FAIR.
Two orphans from England pull pranks. Constant unpleasant disputes keep this episode from being anything but fair. Davey, with a reputation for being annoying when younger, and portrayed as a nitwit in the earlier mermaid episode, is thus unable to balance the disputes with warmth, fun, and a likeable character. The producers have abandoned all continuity between the episodes in this final season.
10. POOR.
Ninety-one year-old Great Aunt Winifred is troubled and comes to visit. A dreary story.
11. GOOD.
Felicity and Hetty travel to South Carolina in search of Gus.
12. FAIRLY GOOD, but not memorable.
Two townspeople encourage Avonlea to vote to sell the cannary to the town of Carmody and to move the school there, and move the railroad line for profit for the two.
13. GOOD.
Felicity marries Gus. Good because the King family is all here.

5 out of 5 stars Memorable film... excellent performances.......2007-03-09

This is a must have! I don't buy a lot of movies, but this is one I had to buy, I remembered watching it randomly 2 years ago and went on a quest to find it on DVD. I'm glad I did. It's funny but deep as well. One of the most interesting stories I've seen. While I would stop short of calling it a Christian movie, it has a great moral message to it. Buy it and you won't be disappointed. Young people like me will relate to the kids while older heads can relate to Martin Landau's character. The DVD includes a really good interview with Landau as well. I wanted it in my collection to entertain my friends with something unexpected.

5 out of 5 stars Friendship and Redemption.......2006-01-10

A moving drama about depressed and hopeless Gordon Trout (Landau in an outstanding performance) who is about to end it all. Fate intervenes in the form of 3 homeless teenagers who need a ride home from the mall, where Gordon has just purchased a firearm in preparation for his suicide attempt. Without a place to spend the night, the teens hitch a ride with Landau "Fish Man" who is less suspicious than annoyed by the teens. By the time Gordon catches on to the teens' flimsy plan to head south, he's been "kidnapped" and becomes a passenger for the duration of the trip. Jodi, the most insightful and compassionate of the three teens elicits empathy from Gordon and despite his attempts to notify police of his "kidnapping", Gordon is powerless to stop the journey. Along the way, Gordon finds meaning and purpose without any cheesy or touching displays of emotion from any of the aforementioned characters and looks 15 years younger than he did at the beginning of the film. A great movie for young teenagers and parents to watch together.

5 out of 5 stars A lot of bang for the buck and minute.......2007-02-19

The previous reviewer who found the movie not worth the time & money, etc., must have a short attention span. The movie is only an hour and 10 minutes! I regularly wait an airports longer than that, and this movie has a lot more subtle punch to it than most hour-long TV shows do. I watched all of the additional features, which were obviously segments of the movie that had to be cut for some reason (financial?)--it certainly couldn't have been that the finished movie was too long for a theater audience!

1 out of 5 stars not even as a documentary.......2006-06-02

I know is a low budget movie , but this is not whorted to pay for or or even to rent it, is poorly acted, slow, poor movie

    4 out of 5 stars A Little Film That Packs a Wallop!.......2006-03-29

ROAD TO LOVE is an obviously very low budget independent French film that introduces the audience to the theme of homosexuality as it is manifested among Islamic/Arab men. Writers Rémi Lange and Antoine Parlebas have created a script so natural, so sensitively real that at moments the film feels like a documentary (each of the young actors in the story bear their own names, the technique of storytelling is basically video interviews), but the impact of the move is quietly profound, without a trace of the saccharine or the gush of Hollywood films dealing with gay subject matter.

French Algerian Karim (Karim Tarek) is a student in Paris and spends his time with his girlfriend Sihem (Sihem Benamoune). He happens to view a television program about the gay life in Egypt in the 20th century, a life that allowed gay relationships and even marriages so along as the men gave up the lifestyle when they eventually married women. His interest in the subject results in a sociology project of interviewing gay Arab men to explore contemporary gay lifestyles. After a few aborted attempts (Karim is not sufficiently comfortable with the subject matter to gain the trust of his interviewees) Karim encounters Farid (Farid Tali), a gay, well-adjusted, quietly seductive handsome Algerian lad who not only agrees to be interviewed, but also finds ways to assist Karim with his project. Chemistry develops and the two depart Paris to visit Marseilles and Morocco and Karim discovers why the subject of choice fascinates him so!

The beauty of this film lies in the honesty in which it is written, directed, acted, and edited. Not only are we allowed to explore a subject matter few of us knew (Islamic homosexuality history and social mores), we are also presented with one of the more tender love stories on film - tender because it is not overt but rather because it is so naturally evolved. The actors are excellent and though they feel as though they are first time, off the street recruits, they find the core of the script and make the story beautiful. In French and Arabic with English subtitles. Grady Harp, March 06

4 out of 5 stars Sensitive, compelling story about some Islamic gays.......2004-11-22

2001's "Tarik El Hob" (The Road To Love) is billed as a "Drama" but views more like a documentary, with the subject being homosexuality among French-Algerians. Karin is a student living with his girlfriend in Paris, who decides to tackle a sociology video project on that topic, and seeks out those open enough to be interviewed on camera. One of the early interviewees is Farid, a gay flight attendant, and the chemistry between the two is evident in their first meeting. Karim rebuffs Farid's good-natured flirtations, but it is clear he is flattered by the attention and somewhat intrigued by the possibility, though he repeatedly states that he is heterosexual and in love with his girlfriend. Farid's travels allow him to collect additional footage and research for Karim's project, and they get better acquainted in future meetings to review the information he obtained. Farid comes up with some tough questions for Karim, including why he doesn't see himself ever marrying his girlfriend, and why he chose this particular topic for his project. In time, the two make a journey to Morocco together, supposedly to do more research for the project, but both know it is a "honeymoon" of sorts for Karin to think about and reconcile his desires.

Beyond the story above, the film (actually, shot on video, in Paris, Marseille, Amsterdam and Morocco) is an informative and intriguing study of homosexuality among some Islamic cultures, where it was seen as an acceptable activity for young men before they married a woman, and where same-sex marriages actually took place until the mid 20th century. The story is told well, with attractive, non-stereotypical "actors" (Though obviously scripted, one wonders if part of this may be somewhat autobiographical, with the characters having the same names as those who play them.) and commendable techncial quality given the tiny budget. In French with English subtitles, some male nudity but no explicit sexual activity. DVD features deleted scenes and expanded versions of some of Karim's interviews.
