SpaceCamp shares a striking similarity to Ron Howard's Apollo 13--it's about NASA trying to bring some people down from outer space, except in this case 13 represents the median age of those in danger. Kate Capshaw plays Andie, who throws off the curve by being on the high end of that age scale. She's always a bridesmaid, but never a bride in the shuttle program, an astronaut doomed to play wet nurse to a gaggle of kids enrolled in NASA's summer program. Of course, out of all these teeming hordes of children (there don't appear to be any particular qualifying standards to attend the camp), the film focuses on five. Kathryn (Lea Thompson) is a hopeful pilot who wants to be at the controls of the shuttle one day. Tate Donovan plays Kevin, a daft young carouser who is supposed to be so incorrigible he's winning (he's not). Kelly Preston is Tish, a valley girl with a photographic memory, and Larry B. Scott is Rudy. Rudy's there to meet the Hollywood quota for capsule diversification, but neither he nor Trish does much. Most oddly, Joaquin Phoenix is Max, the young Star Wars nut whose brain and fast friendship with a NASA robot get them all sent into orbit. It's unfortunate that a lot of topical swear words are peppered throughout SpaceCamp, as it could operate as a diverting night's watch for the young astro-nut in your house. Director Harry Winer, who rose from television and sank back to television after this film stiffed over the summer of 1986, directs in 20-minute blocks like he's pacing himself for a commercial break. Once the embarrassing, extremely '80s, opening 40 minutes are dispensed with, however, and the crew accidentally gets blasted into space, the effort to return home is involving, even if it is pretty silly. SpaceCamp won't win any merit badges for script writing, acting, or direction but it's got the right li'l Camp NASA spirit. --Keith Simanton

3 out of 5 stars Film "classic" with typical bad acting........2007-09-10

Space Camp is campy to the max. However, given that the cast, including Kate Capshaw, is typical 80's, it is forgivable. This film is so predictable that it made me laugh out loud; however, the kids love it. It doesn't meet up with today's special effects standards, but the launch sequence is still spectacular. Kate Capshaw's performance is very unconvincing. The kids in the movie do a much better job that she does.

5 out of 5 stars One of my all time favorite movies........2007-07-05

The acting is not great, but if you have kids that are into space I highly recommend this book, their imaginations will go wild.

5 out of 5 stars Over 50 and still love this little flick.......2007-02-04

Okay, so maybe it's dorky of me, but I really do love this movie. It combines everything I like best in my favorite genres -- fun and funny sci fi; happy ending adventure; heart-warming family entertainment -- with a splash of factual space program documentary. I've seen it about five times! LOL

5 out of 5 stars A Great Family Picture.......2007-01-22

I remember when this movie came out. I saw two different reviews of this picture. One liked it and gave the reasons why. The other did not, and gave his reasons why. And the reasons were the same!!! What one reviewer liked the other hated!

This is an excellent family picture. It shows how people can step up to meet challenges. Of course, watch this movie with your children. Then, you can use it as a tool to encourage them!

One last note: This movie features one of my favorite actors (Skerritt) and one of my favorite actresses (Capshaw).

5 out of 5 stars Space Camp.......2007-01-09

This is a great FAMILY movie to watch. It teaches a great lesson in how very important team work really is and how each person is vitally important to accomplish any goal at hand, otherwise, all would be lost.

4 out of 5 stars Great Fun!.......2007-09-02

It doesn't get any better than giant monsters fighting each other and tearing up the town. TOHO had the best suit actors on their payroll as well as the best special effects crew of the time. And if you pay attention, you will learn that it's wrong to pollute the Earth and that we caused the mess we're in. You have to love a movie that has wanton destruction and yet delivers a "green" message. Enjoy!

4 out of 5 stars "An Almost Adequate dvd".......2007-08-25

The original Japanese theatrical release is in pristine condition however Classic Media/Toho studios should have also cleaned up and remastered the American English dubbed version. That was annoying as one who would prefer to watch the American version and not have to concentrate on reading subtitles is distracted by the the uncleaned film print presented.

The dvd also offers a couple of extra features which consist of stills of the monsters that star in the film and a biography(forgotten who).
Stills include text and other film appearances of the monsters-with title and year given.

5 out of 5 stars Definitely A Film Worth Getting If You Love Godzilla!.......2007-08-10

Being a life-long Godzilla fan, I was excited when Classic Media said they would release Ghidorah: The Three-Headed Monster on DVD! Back in 1998, we got a VHS release of the movie for the first time in YEARS. The film was pan and scan and was discolored and grainy. Not the perfect print for such a classic but we really didn't complain much because we finally got a chance to own the film.

Classic Media did a great job in bringing us a widescreen version of the U.S. release and the Toho Scope Japanese version! The coloring is great, the sound is wonderful, and there is considerably much less grain than on the VHS release a handful of years earlier!

There are some nice extras on this DVD including a trailer, a poster slide-show, and film commentary! This film has just enough goodies on it to keep die-hard G-Fans entertained and satisfied! Highly recommended!

3 out of 5 stars not much action.......2007-07-30

Doesn't anyone realize that this movie doesn't have a whole lot of action?
The battle between king ghidorah, rodan, mothra, and godzilla was short but good. The only problem was that in the middle of it it was interupted by the people. I thought that it could have been better but it was good.

2 out of 5 stars monster round table.......2007-07-29

If you are anxious to see a Japanese monster movie about Rodan, Godzilla and Mothra having a round table discussion about whether to unite and save the world from Ghidorah, the Three-Headed Monster, this is your film. Director Ishiro Honda delivers just that.

If, though, you want to see Honda's GREATEST film and one of the most horrifying and unsettling films of the sixties you should skip the above and check out Mantango. There are no monsters here over six feet tall, Tokyo is not threatened, no buildings are crushed, no tin tanks are destroyed, no thousands of people flee in terror, there is no radioactive breath anywhere and the Japanese army is nowhere in sight.

I guess this world is big enough for both.

Featuring three enjoyably "awful" movies from 1958-59, Cult Camp Classics, Vol. 1: Sci-Fi Thrillers turns nuclear radiation into cause for celebration, especially if you enjoy movies with extra cheese. With the Cold War in full swing and society's worries blamed on the threat of nuclear annihilation, sci-fi buffs (like future filmmakers Steven Spielberg, Joe Dante, and John Landis) could see a new monster movie almost every week. Many of them came from Allied Artists, the low-budget B-movie production company (formerly Monogram) that rose from the ghetto of "poverty row" distribution to produce countless exploitation thrillers between 1946 and 1979. The '50s saw the rise of nuclear monster thrillers, and Allied popularized the trend with its own menagerie of giant, irradiated creatures. The key to Allied's success was its crowd-pleasing combination of exploitable ingredients, and what better way to combine sci-fi, sex, and horror than to unleash a towering babe with an attitude problem? That's exactly what Allied did with Attack of the 50-Foot Woman, a now-classic campfest in which a spurned wife (Allison Hayes) is irradiated by a glowing alien space-ball, grows to a height of (you guessed it), and exacts revenge upon her cheating husband (William Hudson). A year before she bared her shapely backside as Playboy's Playmate of the Month for July 1959, Yvette Vickers costars as Hudson's scheming mistress, giving the film an extra boost of sex appeal. With bargain-priced effects including a giant floppy-fingered hand, hilarious process shots, and cheesy models destroyed by the world's biggest bitch (for whom it is still possible to feel some sympathetic compassion), the movie's not as good as its celebrated poster (which now adorns movie-geek T-shirts around the world), but it's still a lot of fun.

The Giant Behemoth was director Eugene Lourie's obvious attempt to capitalize on his 1953 hit The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms, starring a gigantic paleosaurus rising from the Atlantic with a bad case of atomic radiation. London is the monster's eventual stomping ground, but the lumbering lizard is camera-shy for nearly an hour; you can imagine Beaver Cleaver and his pals groaning through seemingly endless scenes of talky exposition, anxiously awaiting the climactic stop-motion creature effects supervised by the legendary Willis (King Kong) O'Brien. Scoring much higher on the camp-o-meter, and far more entertaining, is the cult classic Queen of Outer Space, which borrows props and costumes from Forbidden Planet, Flight to Mars and World Without End for its outrageously kitschy plot about manly astronauts who crash-land on Venus and discover an underground society of mini-skirted space-babes. Unfortunately the disfigured Venusian queen (Laurie Mitchell) is a man-hater supreme, so the spectacularly costumed Zsa Zsa Gabor (as a Venusian scientist, no less) leads a revolution against her. With a screenplay by Twilight Zone veteran Charles Beaumont and a story credited (almost incredibly) to legendary playwright/screenwriter Ben Hecht (who surely never suspected his idea would eventually yield this movie), Queen of Outer Space is exactly what you'd expect it to be: So bad it's good, and more than worthy of inclusion in this irresistibly priced triple-feature set. --Jeff Shannon

On the DVDs
Three feature-length commentaries accompany the sci-fi thrillers in Cult Camp Classics, Vol. 1. Two of the commentaries are hosted by Tom Weaver, a noted authority on sci-fi and horror films whose historical acumen is more casual than academic: While sharing the commentary on Queen of Outer Space with the film's titular star Laurie Mitchell (who became a mainstay at fan conventions at Weaver's invitation), Weaver fails to explain how the production came to use props and costumes from the classic Forbidden Planet, and that's a glaring oversight. He compensates as an amiable interviewer with the equally good-natured Mitchell, and it's a treat to hear them enthusiastically reading unfilmed scenes from the film's original screenplay. For the commentary on Attack of the 50-Foot Woman, Weaver is joined by the film's comely costar Yvette Vickers (another regular at sci-fi conventions), and their combined anecdotes provide an adequate oral history of this camp-classic production. Star Wars veterans and special-effects masters Dennis Muren and Phil Tippett provide the loose-and-lazy commentary on The Giant Behemoth, which consists mostly of Muren making sarcastic jokes about the film's glacial pacing. It's hardly the authoritative commentary that some fans might've hoped for, but Muren and Tippett are well-versed in special-effects history (Muren even owns the original stop-motion Behemoth creature model), and they share an infectious enthusiasm for the films that inspired them to excel in their profession. --Jeff Shannon

Description

One woman - 25 pairs of shoes?!? It's impossible not to have fun with this all-time kitsch classic which, as fans know, is actually about a very big woman with a very bad attitude. The woman is wealthy Nancy Archer (Allison Hayes), fresh from the looney bin and ticked off. Her rat of a husband (William Hudson) has been at play while the feline's away, putting the moves on Honey Parker (Yvette Vickers, Playboy's Miss July 1959) and scheming about the day when Nancy's fortune will be theirs. That day will never come - not after Nancy has an alien encounter that zaps her metabollism into overdrive. Soon, Nancy's size matches her rage. She'll prove big girls don't cry, they get even.

5 out of 5 stars Great Classics .......2007-09-13

All 3 are really great old (Classic) B-Movies. I can watch em over and over again. Thank's for the collection.

4 out of 5 stars Terrific quality DVD is well worth the price.......2007-09-10

Someone compared these movies to "Plan 9 From Outer Space." That's not really fair. Sure, they're low-budget '50s movies, but their production values are far higher than anything Edward Wood ever managed; moreoever, they lack Wood's deranged free-associations. Whatever, right? They're still fun movies and worth a look.

I must compliment this DVD release: these movies are pristine. This is an encouraging development for us lovers of cheese; Universal's recent Sci-Fi Classic box set (Incredible Shrinking Man etc) was also very high quality. It's a pleasure to watch movies that look this good.

Okay. First up: THE GIANT BEHEMOTH, which was the reason I got this set. I'm a big fan of stop-motion monsters, especially when they trash the urban landscape (in this case, London). This movie is pretty good, though hampered by a dull know-it-all hero and too much talk for the first hour or so. Still, things happen the way you know they're gonna (a fisherman gets attcked; a ferry boat turns up empty). A fun paleontologist shows up to enliven things a little. When Beastie finally comes ashore in London, we get a pretty effective rampage sequence that shows extensive monster. And yes, that attack on the Thames ferry is effective aftr all these years. Compared to, say, Best from 20,000 Fathoms, the Behemoth itself is a somewhat less charismatic and expressive critter. Nonetheless the work is well done. I found the ending somewhat confused and difficult to follow. (Visually, I mean; in terms of the plot, it's not exactly a surprise.) 3 AND A HALF STARS.

2. QUEEN OF OUTER SPACE. Fun but dumb. Or if you prefer, dumb but fun. I read in Bill Warren's excellent book, Keep Watching the Skies!, that this was written as a satire, but the director didn;t get the joke and played it straight, along with the actors. It certainly seems plausible... the movie keeps being almost funny, so you wonder, "Did they mean to do that?" Anyway, astronauts go to Venus (sure!) and find Zsa Zsa Gabor, among other people. Men are illegal, so our space gals have lots of free time to get into, uh, trouble. There's a twist or two at the end, but nothing that could realistically be called "suspense." Production values are great though; full color, good sound, clean print. Costumes and sets lifted from Forbidden Planet and (apparently) spacecraft footage from World Without End, which I've never seen. TWO AND A HALF STARS, or, if you're in the mood for groan-inducing unintentional humor, THREE STARS. (You decide.)

3. ATTACK OF THE 50 FOOT WOMAN. This one surprised me; I was expecting utter dreck but it was, in some ways, well done. The effects are awful and the characterization is, in fact, Ed Wood-ish; but the performances aren't bad. Yvette Vickers in particularly just cracked me up; she really attcks her role as the Evil Other Woman, and just about makes it believable. There's a surprising cynicism here; everyone is motivated by their worst instincts--greed, lust, selfishness. The only one who isn't is the 50 foot woman herself, and she's fresh out of a mental institution. I don't mean to overblow this, it's not Citizen Kane or anything. But it's an oddly compelling mix of really really bad and strangely compelling. Oh but the "rampage" of the woman herself is a huge anticlimax. Just so you're prepared. THREE STARS.

Overall, 3 stars for the movies, 5 plus for the presentation. I don't know about the extras, they're less important than the films. Go have fun.

4 out of 5 stars Cult Camp Classics-Sci- Fi Thrillerc-Its About Time----.......2007-09-02

I just recently bought this dvd set, and it's about time these movies were released on dvd--For years the only option to get these were either laserdisc, vhs tape, or bootlegs dvds on ebay.
"Attack Of The 50 Foot Woman"-What can you say--who needs a budget?
What worst than a women scorned ?-How about a 50 foot woman scorned!!-- I remember watching this on Chiller Theatre(here in NY on WPIX 11) on Saturday nights when I was a kid, and it still hold up.- The special effects are hilariously bad, but that's part of the charm.
"Queen Of Outer Space",Starring Zsa Zsa Gabor(Dahling), and written by Charles Beaumont as a spoof--but the director, and some of the actors don't seem to be aware of that-they play it straight.
"The Giant Behemoth"-- kind of a slow moving picture about dumping radioactive materials at sea disturbing a giant prehistoric sea creature.
The set offers good prints and features commentary by Yvette Vickers & Tom Weaver-film historian-(on Attack),Laurie Mitchell & Tom Weaver(on Queen) and Dennis Muren and Phil Tippett(special effects gurus) on Giant.
The only minor drawback is that they could have put these dvds into slimcases and taken up 1/2 of the space.

5 out of 5 stars So Stupid They're Funny.......2007-08-30

These camp classics are, like many others, so stupid that they're funny. If you enjoyed "Plan Nine From Outer Space," you'll love these. Great for laughs. The sad thing is that those who made them probably took them seriously.

5 out of 5 stars 50'S SCI-FI GEMS NOT TO BE MISSED!!.......2007-08-27

Three of the best Allied Artists 50's sci-fi films finally come to DVD, and it is about time!! First up is Giant Behemoth which stars Andre Morell and Gene Evans as two men who try and stop a giant radioactive monster from stomping London flat. Attack of the 50 Foot Woman is a truely wonderful piece of sci-fi camp that shouldn't be missed. The always sexy Allison Hayes plays a woman who, due to radiation from an alien, grows 50 feet tall and goes looking to kill her two timing husband. Queen of Outer Space stars Zsa Zsa Gabor as a woman who leads a rebellion on the planet Venus when 4 men crash land on her planet. All of these are presented in widescreen with excellent picture and sound quality. If you're a fan of 50's sci-fi this is easily one of the years best sets. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!

What's completely and utterly baffling about Killer Klowns is not the plot--that's rather tidily summed up by the title--but the fact that it got made at all. According to the filmmakers, (the Chiodo brothers: Charles, Edward, and Stephen) all it took to convince the studio was a one-page treatment and a picture of a clown holding a gun. It boggles the mind. Anyway, some killer Klowns descend from outer space and start wrapping their hapless victims in cotton candy for later consumption. Debbie and Mike suspect something's amiss, but who will believe them? The movie's greatest asset is its willingness to play on the inherent creepiness of clowns. The Klowns are grotesque parodies of their big-top cousins, hiding hideous malformed teeth behind terrifying circus makeup. It's impossible to tell if Killer Klowns is truly meant to be scary, but it is compelling in its thoroughness: popcorn, balloon animals, and really big shoes are all used to their fullest effect. The only cast member you'll recognize immediately is veteran character actor John Vernon as Officer Mooney, but keep an eye out for Christopher Titus in a small role as Bob McReed. Then just sit back and stare open-mouthed in bewildered joy. --Ali Davis

Description

Finally the truth about clowns is out! Beneath their smirky sinister grins and wildly patterned clothes are clever killers from out of this world. The "juxtaposition of their toy-store arsenal and malevolent intent proves to be a tasty combination" (Los Angeles Times) in this killer entertainment that will leave you fearing these big-top creatures for good. A spaceshiplooking like a circus tentlands in a field near a small town, signaling the attack of deviant, red-nosed, balloon-twisting psychos from another world who plan to annihilate mankindby turning people into cotton candy! Luckily, the town's teen citizenry decides to fight back and teach the cosmic bozos a lesson. But these klowns are no klutzes, turning popcorn, peanuts and caramel corn into playfulbut deadlyweapons of madcap destruction and mayhem!

3 out of 5 stars Cheesy and Campy...fun!.......2007-09-12

Yes, I should have spelled those with a K but I didn't feel like it. This film is pure 80s, clothing, hairstyles, performances, etc.; even the special effects, although that's a bonus. While some effects are highly cheesy, the Klowns are well-realized and creepy. The cast are intentionally goofy (think of films like the original "The Blob"), with the exception of the John Vernon who steals the entire film.

Interestingly enough, there were a few scenes in the film that actually gave me the creeps, unlike a lot of contemporary horror. It's bad, but in a good way.

And clowns are scary, let's face it.

5 out of 5 stars Best clown movie ever made.......2007-07-18

Creepy, scary, sharp tooth clowns killing people for food with some comedy thrown in. Killer Clowns, killer popcorn, killer shadows, awesome makeup effects and a great story. Over all and totally awesome horror experience. All I can say is go watch this film now, and bring on a sequel already!

4 out of 5 stars classic horror.......2007-05-15

This is a must have for the horror enthustist. It is a typical eighties cheesy horror flick, but a classic in my book. If you love B rated horror movies from the eighties, then you have to add this to your collection.

2 out of 5 stars I love it and i hate it.......2007-05-07

i have a love hate relationship with this movie part of me knows that this is bad but it is also good to.

5 out of 5 stars Big Top Of Death... .......2007-04-26

From the far reaches of space they came, seeking an unwary populace to devour and destroy! With their tiny car, floppy shoes, and bone-white faces, they crept into town one dark night. The KILLER KLOWNS had arrived, just in time for dinner! Yep, this amazing little low-budget movie is a must see / must own classic! Whether you love clowns or hate them, KKFOS belongs in every dvd collection! We get cotton candy cadaver coccoons, alien clown-larva popcorn pop-guns, and flesh-dissolving pies! We even get a boxing glove decapitation scene for added enjoyment! John Vernon (Animal House's Dean Wormer himself!) and Royal Dano (Messiah Of Evil) add their comedic talents to this hellish carnival of hilarity! Guaranteed 100% ridiculous and F-U-N! Buy immediately! P.S.- The "Clownzilla" sequence is my personal favorite. Very well done!...

Sometimes a movie achieves such legendary status that it can't quite live up to its reputation. Plan 9 from Outer Space is not one of these movies. It is just as magnificently terrible as you've heard. Plan 9 is the story of space aliens who try to conquer the Earth through resurrection of the dead. Psychic Criswell narrates ("Future events such as these will affect you in the future!") as police rush through the cemetery, occasionally clipping the cardboard tombstones in their zeal to find the source of the mysterious goings-on. More than just a bad film, Plan 9 is something of a one- stop clearinghouse for poor cinematic techniques: The time shifts whimsically from midnight to afternoon sun, Tor Johnson flails desperately in an attempt to rise from his coffin, and flying saucers zoom past on clearly visible strings. Fading star Bela Lugosi tragically died during filming, but such a small hurdle could not stop writer-producer-director Ed Wood. Lugosi is ingeniously replaced with a man who holds a cape across his face and might as well have "NOT BELA LUGOSI" stamped on his forehead. Plan 9 is so sweetly well- intentioned in both its message and its execution that it's impossible not to love it. And if you don't, well, as Eros says, "You people of Earth are idiots!" --Ali Davis

5 out of 5 stars the masterpiece of Ed Wood's career.............2007-09-12

Ed Wood went down in history for being one of the "worst filmmakers of all time." No doubt, PLAN NINE FROM OUTER SPACE was what pushed him toward obtaining that title. It is indeed filled with cardboard sets and equally cardboard acting. It features Bela Lugosi in his last starring role, before his death. The only problem remained that Mr. Lugosi died during filmmaking. What to do, what to do......Well, while some filmmakers would have re-shot the scenes of Lugosi in the graveyard, Wood kept the cuts that remained from the scenes (or should I say SCENE) that Lugosi appeared in and shows them on a loop, during the course of this caper (where alien invasion and the foolishness of humankind is a constant factor), as well as casting an actor baring little or no resemblance to Lugosi with a cape over his face, so as to conceal his true identity as the stand in. What's more, we see Vampira, an actress with a waistline that defies reality (just watch the film....you won't believe it unless you see it for yourself!) cast as--what else--a vampire. Watch this for the phenomenon that it is. This is, for me, the best and most enjoyable B-movie I have ever seen!

5 out of 5 stars The ABSOLUTE WORST MOVIE I've ever seen!.......2007-08-20

But I have to give it 5 stars anyway!

It's hilarious....I can't help but laugh at how awful it is at every conceivable level!

If you watch this movie, knowing in advance that it's Totally Horrible, you'll be able to laugh at it's mediocrity.

I haven't seen other Ed Wood movies yet...but I will.

Also, watch Tim Burton's bio movie on Ed Wood! That's a Great Film... Johnny Depp and Martin Landau are brillant!

Take it easy...

5 out of 5 stars Color All b/w, then trash the original b/w's.......2007-08-07

Yes, my dreams of a wonderful world filled with colorized movies are slowly coming true. Let me be clear, I would much rather see any drab, dull, dated looking b/w feature, be it movie or TV show, in the beautiful wonderfully modern style colorized versions that we can so fortunately see today. I absolutely love Bewitched and I Dream of Jeanie Seasons 1 in the new colorized versions. I wish the same could now be done for all I Love Lucy & The Honeymooners.

As for Plan 9 In Outer Space, I was the first to buy this just because it was colorized and I was therefore the first to be impressed with the wonderful colorization process that is in it's full glory here. Bela Lugosi has never looked so good in beautiful LIVING (but not for long, unfortunately for him) COLOR! I love any b/w movie or TV show in this new wonderful color process. Let's hope the coloring of the drab b/w movie and TV shows continues.

I won't rest till Citizen Kane and Seventh Seal and any other hoidy toidy purist's favorite is beautifully colorized!! Any b/w show or movie can be vastly improved with the new wonderful colorization process. It ain't your Daddy's colorized movies any more. The technology today is perfected and beautifully natural and real looking. If you want to see another great colorized example from the Legend people who colored Plan 9, then buy the Sherlock Holmes movies that they colorized. Beautiful, just beautiful. Color my world and my movies and TV shows too.

Oh, and for you sickening pretenders who claim to prefer the "pure b/w" I proclaim this order too, after colorizing all b/w TV shows and movies the b/w negatives should be destroyed so you b/w pretenders can have something else to howl about. Of course b/w negatives are NOT destroyed, but this hasn't stopped the lying purists to cry that the sky is falling everytime another movie is beautifully colorized.

If b/w is so wonderful, how come every single movie that is in b/w that comes out on DVD has a color picture cover? If b/w is so beautiful why don't they put the dull drab b/w cover pictures on the DVD releases?? It's because people naturally prefer color, it's natural, it's real, it's the preferred way anyone would want to see an image. But a dull b/w cover on a disc is ugly, b/w is automatically dated looking, COLOR sells because COLOR is more attractive. That's why COLORIZATION should not only be applied to the covers of b/w DVDs but to the films themselves of all b/w films and TV shows. The sooner all b/w movies and TV shows are colorized the happier this world will be.

3 out of 5 stars So bad, it's almost good.......2007-07-03

To fully appreciate this movie you must be totally unimpressed with the acting, costumes, sets, et cetera. You have to laugh at the extra cheesy monsters. This will slump below most other cheesy monsters and bad acting you have seen before. After all it received a couple turkey awards. It takes a special patience to sit through this entire movie. I myself don't have it. I can only take a few minutes of it. To me bad is bad, and this movie is bad. If you find bad entertaining then more power to you. I just find bad to be bad which tends to grate on my nerves. So if you find bad to be good, I certainly respect those that can fully appreciate it. It is a true cult SciFi masterpiece turkey of schlocky B movies.

1 out of 5 stars All you of Earth are idiots!.......2007-06-26

A race of aliens are tired of the "stupid, stupid" Earthlings claiming that aliens don't exist, so they concoct a brilliantly evil plan. First, they fly around in their flying saucers that are "shaped like huge cigars" (??) and fiendishly shine lights in people's faces. Second, they raise three random people from the dead, taking care not to let anyone know they are responsible for this (It could blow their cover.) The dead people, acting on the orders of the aliens, wander aimlessly around a graveyard. One of them even goes into a nearby house and horrifies a woman by walking slowly and staring at her. Finally, the aliens cleverly reveal their entire plan to a trio of snoopers who manage to find their ship (It was hidden behind a tree.) They explain to the Earthlings that they fear Earth will one day discover how to make a Solaranite bomb that will explode the sun. Then they explain to the Earthlings exactly how the Solaranite bomb works. This is why they have to destroy us before we destroy them which will ultimately prove to us that they exist... or something. But there's one thing that these highly advanced aliens didn't count on: three of the Earthlings might resist somewhat.

"Plan 9 From Outer Space" is Ed Wood's masterpiece and is considered by most to be the worst film ever made. Even Criswell couldn't have predicted the cult popularity it has gained. Bela Lugosi died shortly after filming began so the majority of his scenes are played by a look-alike who looks nothing like him. The dialogue is awkward and nonsensical, the set looks like it was borrowed from an elementary school play, and the acting makes Keanu Reeves look like Sir Lawrence Olivier. Listing all the continuity errors would take longer than the film's running time. The only thing that could have made the film worse would have been to include Dolores Fuller.

All in all, "Plan 9 From Outer Space" is one of the most entertaining movies I've ever seen, a triumph of will over talent.

Description

Plan 9 From Outer Space Cult Director Ed Wood's "cinematic masterpiece" _ and also regarded as one of the worst movies ever made! Plan Nine is so bad it's good. Alien invaders use their dreaded "Plan Nine" to re-animate dead earthlings. They wreak havoc and unleash a host of things bizarre, macabre, horrific, and just plain horrible. Using footage from a Bela Lugosi movie he was unable to finish (due to Lugosi's untimely death), Wood proved again he would and could make a film under any circumstances. Hubcaps on wires doubling for flying saucers, stumbling living dead, concrete visible beneath fake grass, and mattresses visible for actors to fall on are just a few of the unbelievable gaffes and goofs you'll see. The result is a comical and campy spoof of science fiction movies themselves. The cast includes TV horror queen Vampira, a host of zombies, military buffoons, and Lugosi in his last performance. Plan Nine has taken on a legendary status of its own and is a MUST for any serious cult film fan. Original Theatrical Trailer: 2 min. Film: Approx. 80 min.

Bonus Material: The Ed Wood Story Hear the story of "Hollywood's best incompetent director" from the people who knew him best and who starred in the film about him. Johnny Depp, who played Ed, and Martin Landau, who won an Oscar for playing Bela Lugosi, talk about Mr. Wood and his legendary style _ or lack thereof, as well as Lugosi. Dolores Fuller, Wood's wife and star of several of his classics, talks about the man and his methods. Maila Nurmi, Vampira herself, talks about the creation of her persona. Johnny Legend recalls Tor Johnson. And Bela Lugosi, Jr. clues you into some of the mysteries about his father. ORIGINAL TRAILERS from Wood classics include Glen or Glenda, Bride of the Monster, Sinister Urge, The Bride and the Beast, and Plan Nine from Outer Space. Approx. 40 min.

4 out of 5 stars Killer Beauties On The Moon.......2007-08-19

Cat-Women of the Moon is about an outer space exploration team traveling to the moon, upon arriving, they are greeted by a race of Beautiful and lovey cat-women that secretly are planning a invasion of Earth. This film is both campy and fun. If the American Film Institute creates a list of the 100 most campy movies of all time, this film sould be on that list.

1 out of 5 stars This isn't even fun to watch, not "Queen of Outer Space" worthy!.......2007-06-20

I purchased this movie thinking that it would be in the same league as "Queen of Outer Space" with Zsa Zsa Gabor. "Queen" was a hilarious, campy, over-the-top tongue-in-cheek female-dominated planet movie. It's hilarious from beginning to end and totally entertaining in a ridiculous way. It's funny as heck.
"Cat women of the Moon" just plain sucked! It takes itself so seriously, the plot is horrific, it's SUPER short, black and white (the cover leads one to believe it is colorized?), the characters are bland and just plain dumb! My wife and sat in disbelief at how BAD this flick was when it was over....There are some of those movies that are "so bad they're good." This is NOT one of those! Movies like "Dracula vs. Frankenstein," "Laserblast," "Plan Nine from Outer Space," "Frogs," "Empire of the Ants," etc. are all so corney that they are just a blast to watch. "Cat Women" just plain is cruddy. Don't waste the nine bucks!!

4 out of 5 stars Cat-women is still a dreamy movie.......2006-06-29

The lead males are impossibly homely, more parts of the spaceship move about when those actors bump into them than when the spaceship is actually in space, and the strings that move the spider in the cave on the moon are shamelessly exposed-and yet there is still something compelling about Cat-Women Of the Moon. Maybe it was the dreamy musical score by Leonard Bernstein, it could have also been the evocative minimalist sets of the cat palace on the moon, or it may have been the mysterious, underplayed beauty of the cat-women themselves with their cat-dance, but in the end this movie may win you over. Despite the pretty crappy acting from most of the lead actors, the story of the movie is interesting, because a very sophisticated question is implied of just how far a species can and should go to preserve itself. If it were the human race that was in its 11th hour and 59th minute of existence, how justified would we be in taking any means necessary for our own species' survival? A more pedestrian perspective of course would be to slant the movie as another product of the cold war with the omnipresent fears of communist domination. Personally, it's more fun to imagine what could have been, than fear what might be. Other items: the transfer is decent to outstanding, especially the cat-palace scenes. The sound quality is excellent. The paucity of extras, however, should be what most viewers who've trucked with Image Entertainment in the past would now come to expect. Get this DVD when it's on sale-don't waste the 19.99 on it.

3 out of 5 stars The Moon As One Big Litterbox... .......2005-12-19

Marie Windsor (Swamp Women) is part of a lunar exploration team that discovers giant spiders and cat-women on the dark side of the moon. Said cat-women (played by the Hollywood Cover Girls) are the final remnants of a once flourishing society. Now they seek to steal the team's rocket and conquer the earth! CWOTM isn't a total loss, but it can be rough on normal-brained viewers! You must keep in mind that it was made in the 50s, at a cost of about 42¢. This will help get you through the majority of the dullness and jaw-shattering dialogue. The middle-aged earth males are about as heroic and verile as Homer Simpson, yet neither Ms. Windsor nor the Cat-women can resist them! It must be the moon's thin atmosphere. The black leotard-wearing cat-babes look more like beat club waitresses than alien marauders! Still, this movie has it's own imbecilic charm. Watch it w/ MESA OF LOST WOMEN, PREHISTORIC WOMEN, and WILD WOMEN OF WONGO for a complete estrogen explosion...

3 out of 5 stars Where do you start here?.......2004-11-24

OK; let's try. Take cheesy special effects, a totally illogical plot, bad scenery, Victor Jory and Sonny Tufts, for God's sake, then toss in Marie Windsor in all her bad girl/B movie glory, and finally all these women in leotards and black stockings that do strange dances. How could you not want to own it??

Description

This is it! The most popular Atomic Age cult film of the twentieth century. Winner of two Golden Turkey Awards for Worst Picture and Worst Director of All Time, the immortal Edward D. Wood, Jr.! It's all here, the not-so-special effects, aliens in skating skirts zooming around in string-powered flying saucers to implement the ninth plan of Earth's conquest (the first eight failed) with an army of zombies (well, three actually), Vampira, Tor Johnson and Bela Lugosi in his legendary "postmortem" performance (with Ed's chiropractor standing in for Bela after his death). This truly original movie, Ed Wood's "Citizen Kane," is a hymn to all those who have ever tried to create something intelligent and meaningful, only to fail miserably every step of the way.

5 out of 5 stars SO BAD ITS GOOD :).......2007-06-21

This movie has a lot of comedic value. From the bad acting to the bad dialogue. From the bad special fx to the bad costumes. If you're looking for serious Star Wars type sci fi, this ain't it. Its a cheap imitation/knock-off. If you're looking for satire/parody this ain't it either. Spaceballs was meant to be a comedy. This was not. Elle, the robot with a bad southern accent, and equally bad dialogue might be the best part. But this movie is also eye candy. It has some trippy visuals akin to lava lamps and kaleidoscopes. If that's the sort of thing you're looking for. I bought it on DVD, watched it, and I will watch it again and again.

1 out of 5 stars The best bad movie ever.......2007-05-22

Shockingly poor.........everything, actually painful to watch. So bad I loved it. There is absolutely nothing good or even accurate about this film. It is a must-see for anyone who enjoys bad cinema.

1 out of 5 stars The ONLY review to read........2007-02-16

This dvd release is pure garbage. It's worth the price of a dollar store purchase. I can't believe that some reviewers have the audacity to even describe the "remastering." There is NO remastering. The label slapped a letterbox around the transfer and obviously fooled a few people. There are ridiculously LOUD audio pops and film is covered in dirt. The opening "Star Wars" credits are in French because these idiots used a French version and did NOTHING to add subs or any translation. I can read and speak French so I didn't have a problem...but what about the general public?
The actual dvd cover looks like it was made with first generation graphics program and printed on a home computer. Does this label operate out of someone's basement in rural Texas?

It's a shame that Substance, like many labels abuses the public with lousy releases of hard to find movies, because despite all of the obviously bad homages to other fantasy films, this kooky psychedelic movie is a charmiing Saturday afternoon feature. I just want to know how so many major celebs were lured into this production, including Bond composer John Barry. Did Luigi Cozzi offer them free weekends at the seaside villa? Pure madness.
