Because even Gods have to die..........2007-09-10
I have been waiting FOREVER for them to make a GOOD Superman movie animated or live-action. The greatest arc in the history of DC comics, and I can't wait for it to come out. Also Doomsday kicks a$$.
Everything I Wanted It To Be, & More!!!.......2007-09-09
Finally we get a true comic book to movie film that works!!! True the movie does stray a little from the original comics, but it stays close enough that you still get the idea. This movie does not take place in Warner Brother's "Superman - The Animated Series" universe. There's no JLA, & Lex Luthor is a much more brutal, sinister Luthor. This Luthor is very familiar to those familiar with the comics. He's a take no prisoners killer. I also like what they did with "The Toyman" (it's to bad he won't be around for future pics :P). This is a PG-13 movie that deserves to be PG-13 (unlike Marvel's pathetic attempts at making animated feature films "Ultimates/Iron Man/Doctor Strange" YUK!), the fight scenes are brutal & you really get a sense of the power being thrown around between both Superman & Doomsday. This is the film Warner should've made with the recent "Superman Returns", live action this would've been awesome. There's a whole new voice cast that for this film that nail the characters dead on. The animation (again unlike the Marvel animation) is truely amazing you can tell the animators really put their hearts & souls into every frame. The return/rebirth of Superman storyline is a little different. Rather than their being 4 Supermen taking his place their is only one. I won't go to deep into detail as not to spoil anything for anyone, but it fits well with the story. 4 Supermen wouldn't have fit into one film & for thsi I'm glad they chose to change things rather than force it into a 90 minute movie. The special features are great too, you get an interview with the entire team that originally killed Superman with the Doomsday story line which is really cool (just think we have "Lois & Clark" to thank for "Supes" demise:P), cast interviews & a sneak peek inside look at Warners next DC animnated film "Justice League - The New Frontier" which looks just as equally amazing!! Anyway, those are my thoughts. Anyone who's ever liked Superman needs to watch this movie. That goes for anyone who's ever enjoyed animated films as well. This is a well put together film that I think everyone will enjoy. Buy This Movie!!!
I wanted to like it, I really did.......2007-08-30
Being a longtime DCAU fan, I was very much looking forward to seeing this. I knew with Duane Capizzi writing, the man responsible for Superman:Brainiac Attacks, that could mean trouble. Except I held out hope, knowing that the source material he was adapting it from was good, and that Bruce Timm was on board to steer this in the right direction.
Now I understand full well that this story is not connected to the DCAU, and is a stand alone movie, but I still can't help wishing they had stuck with the original voice actors. They just couldn't resist casting name actors to draw more fans in I suppose and while Adam Baldwin is an ok Superman, Anne Heche doesn't hold a candle to Dana Delaney's Lois, and I won't even get started on the downgrade with Luthor. This is quite disappointing considering Andrea Romano's voice casting is usually spot on.
But enough about the actors. My biggest problem with this is that what could have been three great movies, turned out to be one sub par movie. I understand from being at the q&a panel that the idea was to condense the story, make it simpler, and let it stand alone as just a Superman story. The idea sounds ok in theory, but it just makes the movie feel cheap, like we're getting the cliff's notes version when I'd rather be seeing the unabridged epic with a full story of supporting characters. I was really hoping to see a cliffhanger ending, something to indicate that this is not the end, but alas there was no Empire Strikes Back moment to relish in.
The animation doesn't stray too much from Timm's style, which is visually pleasing but makes the fact that the voices are radically different that much more irritating. I will say that the fight between Supes and Doomsday is really something. That alone is worth two stars. Just the right length and even more brutal than the fight they had in JLU. I will watch it again just for that.
There's a few other surprises and character moments to behold that are enjoyable. I just can't help imagining what it could have been had they done it right and adapted the entire story as opposed to giving us a taste test of one of the most definitive Superman stories ever told.
Great Film (yes, I did see it before release).......2007-08-23
Yes, I read the comic series and yes I think the film is a more streamlined, coherent storyline than the comic series was. The Lex Luthor plots and the Lois Lane angst is fun -- a bit of blood, the threat to children and the evil of Doomsday is interesting. The Fortress of Solitude (with the required Crystal technology) is interesting. The talk Bruce Tim gave at San Diego Con at the premiere of this film really showed me why nearly 7,000 people were crammed in to watch this film. It's a must-see for any Superman fan.
my thoughts on superman - doomsday........2007-08-12
i had high hopes for this movie...i volunteered at the san diego comic con this past july just to see the premiere of the movie. i was dissappointed that this was a stand alone story that had no connection to any previous superman storylines - be it animated or from the comics. the animation itself was decent but the weird lines on superman's face just bugged me right from the opening scene and throughout the movie...lois and luthor looked poor as well.
doomsday lacked presence in the movie...he was all ready introduced in the justice league animated series (with the justice lord superman easily defeating him). they could have done more with him, this movie could have been retitled "superman and another lex luthor plans to take over the world with some lucky circumstances".
everything seemed rushed in the movie - doomsday's appearance, doomsday's death, superman's return to life (or so it seemed), superman's return to stop luthor plans. the only thing that was drawn out was superman's relationship with lois - long and lame.
the voice casting could've been anyone; famous (or recognizeable names don't make for a great animiated movie).
overall, the movie was not a super attempt for dc's direct to dvd animated movies.

Consistently solid with some major developments, the fifth season of Smallville kicks the characters off to college, but not before finishing the cataclysmic disaster that ended the fourth season. With Chloe transported to the Arctic Circle and Kryptonian supervillains in town, Clark (Tom Welling) is in the Fortress of Solitude meeting Jor-El (voiced by Terence Stamp). He gives up his powers, but to get them back will cost him the life of someone he loves.
The even bigger development is that Clark and Lana (Kristin Kreuk) finally give up their dalliances with others and become an official couple. That means the other girls in Clark's life become fifth and sixth wheels, so Chloe (Allison Mack) reveals the secret she's been keeping from Clark and becomes a best pal. Super-gorgeous Lois's (Erica Durance, now part of the opening credits) banter with Clark loses its bite without any sexual tension so instead she meets Arthur "AC" Curry, a fantastic swimmer who has an eye for Lois and an accusing one toward Lex (Michael Rosenbaum) and LutherCorp. He's not the only one; Clark's Central Kansas A&M professor, Milton Fine (James Marsters) hires Clark to help him on his project, an expose of LutherCorp. Lex is the pivotal character of the season. His relationship with his best friend, Clark, now history, Lex has a Christmas Carol-type dream in which he sees himself in a law-abiding--and happy--life. (That episode, "Lexmas," also has some amusing interplay involving Clark and Chloe.) Undeterred, he decides on a life of power and dives into a state senate race against Jonathan Kent with gusto, though a fanatical Lex supporter turns the race into a literal one for life and death. Lionel Luthor (John Glover) also makes a strong comeback in this season, pulling unseen levers and making everyone wonder exactly what he knows.
There's some fun. "Thirst" is a tribute to Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and another DC Comics character, Cyborg (Teen Titans), appears. Carrie Fisher plays Chloe's editor at The Daily Planet, and "Exposed" reunites Schneider with former Dukes of Hazzard costar Tom Wopat, and the two go peeling out in a vehicle. But things come to a head in the series 100th episode, when Jor-El's prediction comes to pass and splintered relationships end up leading in unexpected directions. Then in the season finale's cliffhanger, Clark has to face three of his enemies. DVD features include commentary on two episodes and a half-hour examination of the 100th episode, from writing through production. --David Horiuchi
Description
An astonishing season of destiny! Clark Kent now carries a full load of classes at Central Kansas U., but that's not all he carries. He carries the full weight of his - perhaps the world's - destiny. "We call this season Superman in Training," series co-creator Alfred Gough says. "Clark is going to accept his destiny." During this exciting pivotal season: The Fortress of Solitude rises. A spaceship mystery unfolds. A dark tragedy - one even Clark's powers can't prevent - strikes. These and more key elements of Superman lore fall into place.

A landmark episode and a tragic death.......2007-09-10
Season five of the WB's (now the CW) Superman as a teenager drama, Smallville produced a landmark episode, introduced a few new superheroes that show up in Superman's future and also saw the death of one of the show's most-loved characters.
Early in the fifth season, the show reached its 100th episode, quite an accomplishment in and of itself, and that episode, "Reckoning," was when the powers that be decided that a major character was going to die, and while most people could read the writing on the wall as to who that character would be, the show did tease a little bit, leading viewers to think it may be somebody other than Clark's father, Jonathan, but in the end, the newly-elected Senator Kent was stricken moments after fighting with Lionel Luthor, surrounded by his wife and son.
Smallville explores the youth of future Superman Clark Kent (Tom Welling) as he learns to deal with his powers and how to use them to help others. This season was the first season that the main character and his friends were no longer in high school, so the show shifted a little bit, with a lot of action taking place in nearby Metropolis.
As Clark struggles with his secret, another person becomes a keeper of that secret. Clark's friend Chloe (Allison Mack) learned of the secret late in season four, but she gets closer to Clark in the fifth season as he realizes she knows and finds himself becoming more and more comfortable around her. Clark's relationship with the love of his teenage life, Lana Lang (Kristin Kreuk) is another story, as he struggles keeping his secret from her. He finally tells her and in the 100th episode, Lana is killed while being chased by Lex (Michael Rosenbaum), forcing Clark to request a favor of his biological father Jor-El. Clark gets to live the day over, doesn't tell Lana his secret and saves her, eventually leading to the death of Jonathan Kent (John Schneider).
Lana turns to Lex for comfort and finds much more than that, as the two begin a relationship that is certainly doomed from the start, but one that infuriates Clark as he truly believes the horrible things that Lex is capable of and doesn't want Lana to be part of them. Lana's romance with Lex also stems from a mutual interest in a space ship that crashed in the finale of season four and which Lex secures in the start of this season.
At the start of the season, Clark and Chloe both end up in the "Fortress of Solitude," where Clark accidently releases Krypontians from the Phantom Zone. One Kryptonian who comes to play a big part in the season is Milton Fine (guest star James Marsters), who also will be known as Brainiac. He is a professor at Central Kansas A and M, where Clark is a student, but his Kryptonian heritage is discovered as he tries to convince Clark that Jor-El was evil. The two do battle, with Clark coming out on top in the first round, but Fine seemingly getting revenge in the finale.
Chloe takes her journalism to Metropolis University, where she rooms with Lana. Chloe also gets a job at the Daily Planet, where she uses all the resources available to her to help Clark fight against the evil of the world. She also spends a good deal of time with her cousin, Lois Lane (Erica Durance), who showed up in the previous season as a regular hinderance in Clark's life. Lois also gets the chance to serve as campaign manager for Jonathan's senate run against Lex and eventually as Martha Kent's (Annette O'Toole) chief of staff when she takes her husband's seat.
Lionel Luthor (John Glover) also discovers Clark's secrets and uses them to his advantage with the Kents, eventually leading to the heart attack that kills Jonathan. He also finances Jonathan's senate run against his son, knowing that the power that Lex is seeking will only make him hungry for more and he believes that is not good for anybody. Lionel also seems very interested in Martha Kent as the season winds down.
The landmark episode was certainly the 100th, which featured the death of Jonathan and the break-up of Clark and Lana. In addition, the season also features the introduction of Aquaman and Cyborg, friends who will come back to help Clark in the future. The highlight of the season for me, anyway, was the episode that featured John Schneider's former Dukes of Hazzard co-star Tom Wopat at Senator Jack Jennings. The two really play up the whole Hazzard connection, right down to a 1969 Dodge Charger with a stuck passenger side door. I really got a kick out of that episode and was glad the two got to work together before Schneider's character died.
This set also featured two commentary tracks, deleted scenes and a great behind-the-scenes look at the making of the landmark 100th episode, all solid extras on another solid set.
All told, the fifth season of Smallville's only weakness may indeed be Kryptonite.
Still Great.......2007-08-31
A lot of stuff happens this season that makes this worth buying; Aquaman, silver Kryptonite, Braniac and the death of a family member are just a few things that happen this season. Season five is definitely one of the most exciting seasons and one of the most interesting since a lot of it takes place in Metropolis. The series just gets better and better with each season
One of the series' better seasons!.......2007-08-30
I've always thought that television shows should be fun. I don't care what sense of morality and thought-provoking situations you want to put in; the show has an obligation to entertain. Smallville's Season 5 does not fail.
The season begins with the aftermath of the second meteor shower and a choice for Clark that has dire consequences he cannot see or [mostly] fix. It's a new world for Kent and Co. as they move from high school into the world of adults; their adulthood is something the show and its themes will not let you forget! It's complex, it's exciting, and it's moving. Every moment of this season is a blast.
And this is because it's rare to see a show that can put solemnity and camp into the same season and make it work. We have death, we have heartache, and we have some episodes that are so playful and silly they just make you laugh. But remember--even this more campy episodes concerning vampire sororities and holiday specials serve their purpose in furthering the plot. A useful way to have fun.
Even the characters seem more comfortable in their respective niches even as they go under remarkable changes.
Great writing and a great way to move our characters onto their destinies! The first season of this show to which I have given 5 stars.
Oh, and check out the documentary on Superman. Wonderful.
Enjoying Season Five.......2007-08-27
I am truly enjoying the fifth season of Smallville and I know I will buy the Sixth season soon. If you like the Clark Kent story, Smallville is for you.
Smallville - The Complete Fifth Season.......2007-08-23
Great series! As the seasons pass, the plot thickens leaving our perceptions of people to change dramatically (as I knew they would) with a great story line. After the season finale I am counting the days until season six is available!

The arrival of another gorgeous young woman with the initials of LL further complicates Clark Kent's (Tom Welling) life in the fourth season of Smallville, the WB's hip and sexy reinvention of the Superman legend. In this case, it's Lois Lane (Erica Durance), a would-be college freshman who's come to the Kansas heartland to investigate the disappearance of her cousin, Chloe. What she discovers instead is a naked, amnesiac Clark Kent in a cornfield, and things take off from there. Durance doesn't appear in every episode--she was credited as a "special guest star"--but her tough spirit and crackling wit provide a great, non-romantic foil to Clark.
That's just as well, because there's plenty of romantic triangulation--or worse--going on. Clark's former love interest--and his first LL--Lana Lang (Kristin Kreuk), has returned from her summer in Paris sporting a new boyfriend, Jason Teague (Jensen Ackles), as well as a mysterious tattoo that seems to have something to do with a set of Kryptonian crystals as well as Jason's sinister mom, Genevieve (Jane Seymour). Keeping his relationship with Lana a secret, Jason has signed on as Smallville High's new assistant football coach. What's surprising is that the team's new quarterback is none other than Clark, who's grown tired of hiding his super-strength, super-speed, and invulnerability and wants to be part of the team. But nothing's easy for Clark, and he goes through the prom, a marriage, and fatherhood, not necessarily in that order, as well as his secret being discovered, unknown to him, by one of his closest friends. (On the plus side, he does uncover a cool new power.)
But the key to the season is the Kryptonian crystals. They further deteriorate the relationship between the incarcerated Lionel Luthor (John Glover), and his son, Lex (Michael Rosenbaum). Lex may be Clark's best friend, but he reveals more of his dark side in a revelation about his sexual escapades and a split-personality (literally) incident. Lana's frightening dreams actually come to life in a silly Charmed-type episode. Then in the explosive season finale, the main characters are scattered and another meteor shower threatens to wipe out the town.
One of the fun things about Smallville is how producers Al Gough and Miles Millar and their team of writers acknowledge their place in a 70-year Superman mythos (even if Clark is never referred to as Superman). His DC Comics origins receive a nod with appearances by the Flash, Krypto the superdog, and the magical Mxyztplk. And the cast includes not only regular Annette O'Toole (Martha Clark), who had played Lana Lang in Superman III, but guest shots by Margot Kidder (Bridgette Porter) and Terence Stamp (the voice of Jor-El), and the late Christopher Reeve gets a brief but touching farewell in an announcement of the passing of his character, Dr. Virgil Swann.
Extras include 15 minutes with the writing team, a spotlight on Kidder, Durance, and others who have played Lois Lane, deleted scenes, and three episodes with commentary from combinations of Gough, Millar, Durance, Kreuk, Glover and others, but not Welling. --David Horiuchi

Still Fun, But Not The Best Season.......2007-09-04
Out of the five seasons, this is probably the weakest, but that doesn't mean this isn't good either. This season offered an original idea to the Superman mythology, black kryptonite! There are some other really interesting plots and twists in this season that are really enjoyable. Season four is mainly known for the debut of Lois Lane which I think was pulled off perfected and definitely made a memorable entrance. I agree that the worst part of the season was the whole "Charmed" Lana is a witch story. It was just kind of silly, especially when she started doing martial arts in China. The coolest part, however, was Margot Kidder making her appearance in the series which was awesome since Christopher Reeve had appeared prior. Overall, a pretty good season that I give four stars to just because there is a lot that I enjoyed, but not as much as the other seasons.
Great fun for the family!.......2007-08-14
Though I'm not a huge fan of Smallville, my family is, especially my son. Got this for his birthday and he locked himself away for a week with his cousins to watch it! Less rampaging through the house, lol!
Smallville - Season 4 - Better than Ever.......2007-08-14
The writing and acting are only getting better. The hunt for the "elements" is the driving force behind season 4. Jane Seymour and Jason Teague join the lineup as mother and daughter.
excellent...just ordered season 5 - can wait!
Love this series........2007-08-14
I have all five seasons thats out and cant wait till season six comes out next month. I already have mine pre-ordered. All I can say is watch it! You have to be just a little in love with comic book type movies like Spiderman, Xmen and Fantastic 4. Im not saying you have to be a die hard fan of comics or Superman but you gotta at least like this kinda genre. There are some episodes that will make you go "Wow thats just crap." Because they are kinda slow and not really telling you anything or progressing in the story line. You have to bite your lip through those episodes which are few and far between. Season 1 and season 5 I think are the two best. Seasons 2-4 are good but there really just filler I think. Season 1 has some of the cool abilities come to life and also lets you get to know everyone in Smallville. Season 2-4 gets you more and I believe all of his abilities out in the open. (could be wrong on that) New Good Guys and Villains galore! Now Season 5 heats up and has some really good last few episodes that will have you kicking the tv for more! I threw my remote across the room because of how that season ends. All I can say is Cliff Hanger!!!!!! All in all Im bias because I just really fell in love with this TV Series. Im a huge comic fan so like I said Im kinda bias. Worth it? HECK FREAKING YES AND THEN SOME WITH EXTRA EXTRA SOME!!
Last Best Season.......2007-07-16
Season 4 is awesome, there is more sex, drugs, and rock n roll then the other ones, it has more high tempo episodes, which this is my favorite season, season 3 was awesome but season 4 is better. Season 5 is a big let down. In season 4 Clark gets married, gets Lana back, loses his dad to save Lana. But also which is awesome is Lana Lang in the Superman Movies with Christopher Reeve, Lana Lang is played by the same actress who plays Clark's mom, Martha Kent.

For many fans, the Superman revisionist series Smallville truly hit its stride in its second season, when it shifted focus from traditional comic book conflicts to one of self-discovery for its hero, a teenage Clark Kent (Tom Welling). Fans and first-timers can judge for themselves with this six-disc set, which compiles all 23 episodes and a decent selection of supplemental features. Whereas season 1 focused on Clark using his powers to combat a host of menaces à la the WB's other big fantasy hit, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, season 2 delved into Clark's past and the extent of his super powers, most notably in the back-to-back "Heat," in which he discovers his heat vision, and "Red," in which red kryptonite in the high school class rings uncorks Clark's less-than-upstanding side. Other plot developments from the season that pull the series in interesting directions include the arrival of Dr. Helen Bryce (Emanuelle Vaugier), who becomes involved with Lex Luthor (Michael Rosenbaum), but the season's most significant moment comes during episode 17, "Rosetta," in which Clark learns of his Kryptonian origins courtesy of a scientist, who, in an effective bit of casting, is played by Superman film star Christopher Reeve.
The complexity of the writing and issues dealt with in season 2 marked Smallville as a series with depth and drama worthy of its considerable fan following as well as a second boxed set; fittingly, the supplements in this set are more expansive than on the first one. Producers Alfred Gough, Miles Millar, and Greg Beeman and cast members Welling, Rosenbaum, and Kristen Kreuk weigh in on commentary tracks for two episodes ("Red" and "Rosetta"), while a trio of short featurettes explore Christopher Reeves's appearance in "Rosetta," the show's visual effects, and the amusing "Wall of Weird" web page maintained by Chloe (Allison Mack). The extras are rounded out by a handful of deleted scenes and a gag reel. --Paul Gaita

Great series.......2007-09-09
As we don't have cable, we occasionally hear about a series that is worth looking into. Smallville was introduced to us by our son who saw it at a friends house. Having been a Superman fan since childhood, it peaked my interest. Now my wife and I are hooked and into season 4 already. An interesting take on Superman's youth, it's been fun to watch the different characters become who we've known them to be from various other mediums through the years (comics, movies, TV series). You'd have to be a Superman hater not to enjoy this series.
The Legend Continues.......2007-08-24
Season two became even better than the first season, with a lot of the story seeing the return of characters from the first season. There are some really exciting episodes, and some really sad episodes. Such as the episode "Ryan", which is an episode that brings back the character of Ryan who was in the first season, definitely is a sad episode.
There are a lot of things that are introduced in this season. Red kryptonite, which has an effect on Clark's emotions and he also begins to discover who he is. Overall, this is just an overall must have season if you loved the first. Start with season one first, however, because this season is definitely a continuing story from season one. Really great!
I was so impressed with Smallville season2.......2007-07-25
I love smallville and my expectations were very high when I perchased this product. It came in 3 days of my order and I was able to enjoy it that day!
A summary of all the important Smallville issues.......2007-07-19
For a town called "Smallville" there certainly are a buttload of people living there.
On a similar note, for a small farm town, there certainly are a buttload of murders.
No matter how many times he is vindicated, Jonathan Kent still gets arrested on nothing more than an anonymous tip.
Lana Lang, although cute as a button, is Satan incarnate.
Chloe Sullivan, although cute as a button, is an emotional retard.
There are apparently 11 metric tons of glowing meteoric rock in a small Kansas town, but only a couple of quack scientists are interested in it.
Metropolis is so far away that people have to plan a whole weekend to go, yet Clark and Lana can see it from a thirty foot tall windmill.
Jonathan and Martha Kent are the only couple in Kansas who got married and stayed married.
I love this show! Onward to season 3!

Amazon.com
If Richard Donner's 1978 feature film Superman: The Movie made us believe a man could fly, Bryan Singer's 2006 follow-up, Superman Returns, lets us remember that a superhero movie can make our spirits soar. Superman (played by newcomer Brandon Routh) comes back to Earth after a futile five-year search for his destroyed home planet of Krypton. As alter ego Clark Kent, he's eager to return to his job at the Daily Planet and to see Lois Lane (Kate Bosworth). Lois, however, has moved on: she now has a fiancé (James Marsden), a son (Tristan Leabu), and a Pulitzer Prize for her article entitled "Why the World Doesn't Need Superman." On top of this emotional curveball, his old archrival Lex Luthor (Kevin Spacey) is plotting the biggest land grab in history.
Singer, who made a strong impression among comic-book fans for his work on the X-Men franchise and directed Spacey in The Usual Suspects, brings both a fresh eye and a sense of respect to the world's oldest superhero. He borrows John Williams's great theme music and Marlon Brando's voice as Jor-El, and the story (penned by Singer's X-Men collaborators Michael Dougherty and Dan Harris) is a sort-of-sequel to the first two films in the franchise (choosing to ignore that the third and fourth movies ever happened). The humorous and romantic elements give the movie a heart, Singer's art-deco Metropolis is often breathtaking, and the special effects are elegant and spectacular, particularly an early airplane-disaster set-piece. Of the cast, Routh is excellent as the dual Superman/Clark, Spacey is both droll and vicious as Luthor, and Parker Posey gets the best lines as Luthor's moll Kitty. But at 23, Bosworth seems too young for the five-years-past-grizzled Lois. It's nice to see Noel Neill, Jack Larson (both from the classic Adventures of Superman TV series), and Eva Marie-Saint on the screen as well. Superman Returns is one of those projects that was in development for seemingly forever, but it was worth the wait -- it's the most enjoyable superhero movie since Spider-Man 2 and The Incredibles. --David Horiuchi
On the DVD
The two-disc edition offers about three hours of documentaries and other features. "Requiem for Krypton: Making Superman Returns" is an eight-part documentary about the movie, going back to Bryan Singer conceiving the movie back in 2004. There's a lot of on-set footage and analyses of special effects and stunts such as Brandon Routh's flying (helped by his swimming regimen), focusing more on the filming process than the design. For example, we see how the Metropolis scenes were shot but not how the often-striking sets were designed. Marlon Brando appears briefly in the bloopers section, and "Resurrecting Jor-El" spotlights the techniques used to create his footage. The eleven deleted scenes (about 15 minutes total) contain nothing earth-shaking, but it's nice to see more Eva Marie-Saint, one scene of Clark back in Smallville that could have altered the dynamic of his return to The Daily Planet, and a scene between Kevin Spacey and Parker Posey that is good for a laugh. --David Horiuchi

Has he really?.......2007-09-13
Being an 80s kid, I grew up watching the Christopher Reeve Superman movies, so I was a little skeptic about a new film, that obviously couldn't star the late actor. After all, how could anyone else play Superman than him?
I have to say, Brandon Routh did a decent job. If we couldn't get Christopher Reeve, he probably was the second best choice. You can tell he was very much influenced by the first 4 Superman movies, either when wearing cape or glasses.
Unfortunately, the same cannot be said of Kate Bosworth, who I believe was a very poor choice to play Lois Lane. A 23 year old mother who is the Daily Planet's star reporter? Since Superman has been in outer space for 5 years, that means she was 18 when they were romantically involved. So she would technically still have been in journalism school then...
Kevin Spacey on the other hand does an excellent job playing Lex Luther. I was relieved to see the makers have opted to keep the Gene Hackman version and not replace him by some larger than life supervillian.
As for the story, this movie is somewhat of a sequel to the 4 Christopher Reeve films. Superman has been away for 5 years, looking for the remains of his home planet Krypton. During that time, Lex Luther has been released from jail, since the Man of Steel neglected to show up in court and Lois Lane has gotten romantically involved with another man and given birth to a son.
Luther has once again found his way to Superman's Fortress of Solitude and has stolen one of its crystals in order to wipe the United States out of existence and create a new continent that he can sell to the highest bidder. Sound familiar? In fact, the whole movie is full of references to the first film. It starts off with the exact same opening credits and score and Marlon Brando makes a few appearances from beyond the grave.
As for the look, the actors dress like in the 1930s, which, I guess, creates a nice journalistic feel, the Daily Planet's employees being the main protagonists in the movie after all. It also makes for a kind of classic, timeless atmosphere. One thing it does not do, however, is recreate the magic of the first 2 Superman movies, which were set in the glitter and glamour world of the late 70s - early 80s. Lois Lane does not wear shiny evening gowns or live in a Metropolis penthouse, but looks like a (very young) house wife and lives in Wayne Manor. Granted, she's upset with Superman for having left her for five years without even saying goodbye, but there simply is no magic between Brandon Routh and Kate Bosworth in the way that there was between Christopher Reeve and Margot Kidder. This is clearly visible in the pretty lame flying sequence. Remember "Can You Read My Mind"? Well, not anymore, I guess. What happened to the lovely night time shots of Metropolis (Manhattan) or the beautiful wide open landscapes of the American West? I'd have thought that in these warlike days, it would have been nice to add a little patriotism to a Superman movie. After all, isn't he supposed to fight for truth and justice in the American way?
The special effects aren't all that great either, actually. Superman: The Movie may have been made almost 30 years ago but its flying sequences were a lot more credible than the flashes of red and blue or lame CGI effects that were used in Superman Returns. Christopher Reeve may have "only" lifted a helicopter to save Lois Lane in his first public appearance, it still had a much more heroic feel to it than when he threw a rocket into space and landed a plane in a baseball stadium this time around. I can't speak for all Superman fans out there but I did not go: "Yeah, he's back!" during the 2 seconds it took him to intercept the plane or his subsequent computerized hovering before the plane's entrance after having saved his favorite journalist.
One good aspect, though, is the slow pace, the sets and the music. The Fortress of Solitude and the farm where Clark grew up look and sound exactly the same as in the first 4 films.
All in all, I guess you could say the actors, composer and even the director did their best and if we couldn't get another Christopher Reeve movie, I guess this still is a decent effort. Trouble is, the first films were just so magical every other take is bound to leave you feeling a little disappointed.
Far better than expected.......2007-09-04
This was the best of the Superman movies. Brandon Routh was even better than Chris Reeve because there was no put-on of the character. Routh will be going places. And Kevin Spacey's performance improves as you watch it. The color and style update of the costume was needed and done well. Kate Bosworth's Lois was weak. Her husband was good. The special effects are very believable and flawless and beautiful. This is a winner for all ages.
new guy, old suit, great continuation of a legacy .......2007-09-03
Unlike some great movie sequels which brought in a heavy duty director so as to "save" the franchise or get it started again (ala Star Trek: Nemesis) and failed miserably because of a lack of knowlege about the franchise, Bryan Singer does a bang up job using old scores, old Marlon Brando film scenes, and keeps the dream alive about our hero from Krypton. The special effects, especially on HD DVD, are spectacular. One scene showing a crashing plane wherein Kal El attempts to stop the crash in mid-air, you can see the rippling of aluminum on the wings as Superman slows the plane's decent. This along with mind blowing audio on your 5.1 (or more) stereo system brings it right into your living room in a way that brings you into the movie unlike ever before. This is one of many such scenes where the latest tech in movieland is making the unbelievable seemingly realistic--or at least you want it to be real after watching it. The character portrayals by the "new" Superman actor and the rest of the cast were well chosen, and giving Brandon Routh a chance to show his stuff was a match made in heaven when it came to giving him the role. Remember, there was another actor who came out of no where to play the Man of Steel years ago who most of us had never heard of then, and from that point on we were convinced that a "man could fly". For that matter, too, God bless you Christopher Reeve, and we are glad that this dynasty of movies has been resurrected even as a tribute to your characterization of the Last Son of Kryptonn you shared with us so long ago.
Dreadful.......2007-09-03
Borying. That resumes the whole movie. Not even the special effects are good, Superman's image is so artificial that in some parts of the film you wonder whether there is a Mattel tag on the suit behind the cape.
AWESOME MOVIE.......2007-08-26
SPECIAL EFFECTS ARE OUTTA THIS WORLD, I'VE BEEN WAITING FOR 5 LONG YEARS FOR THIS MOVIE TO COME OUT. IF YOU'RE SUPERMAN FAN WAS WORTH THE WAIT. BRANDON ROUTH PLAYED CLARK KENT/SUPERMAN SO GREAT THAT I THOUGHT THIS MOVIE WAS THE BEST MOVIE BY FAR AS SUPERMAN'S MOVIES.

He's back. A hero for our millennium. And not a moment too soon, because during the five years (much longer in movie-fan years!) Superman sought his home planet, things changed on his adopted planet. Nations moved on without him. Lois Lane now has a son, a fiance and a Pulitzer for "Why the World Doesn't Need Superman." And Lex Luthor has a plan that will destroy millions - no, billions - of lives. Filmmaker Bryan Singer (X-Men) gives the world the Superman it needs, honoring the legend everyone loves while taking it in a powerful new direction. Brandon Routh proves a perfect choice to wear the hero's cape, leading a top cast that includes Kate Bosworth as Lois and Kevin Spacey as Lex. And the thrills - from a sky-grapple with a tumbling jumbo jet to a continent-convulsing showdown - redefine Wow. "I'm always around," Superman tells Lois. You'll be glad he is.

Superman TAS..........2007-05-25
To be honest, This show was not all that great. One reviewer said it's not fair to compare Supe's TAS to Batman TAS. But c'mon. Bruce Timm and his buddies really set the bar extremely high with Batman, but Superman though lighter and "nicer," well, just does not have as quality stories as Batman. I admit I'm a Batman fan OK. And of course he's way cooler. But if your'e going to take a guy from another planet who dresses up in red, yellow and blue tights, flies around and punches stuff, you need good story for people to take it seriously. Maybe it's just the boyscout in Superman that makes him so cheesy. So why the four stars. Well, I think some of the greatest episodes in this are...World's Finest 1,2 and 3. Yes, the ones with Batman. I'm sorry, Batman just makes even Superman look Cooler. But if youre a Supes fan you should definately get this. It's way better than any cartoon they have out there now ("The Batman"). It still deserves four stars because there are some great episodes like The Last Son of Krypton,The Way of All Flesh,Blast from the Past, The Late Mr. Kent, Apokolips Now, and of course the Finale, Legacy.I must say, Darkseid is great in this. There are a couple of lame episodes but if you like Supe's, definately get this.
A good series that never quite flew.......2006-09-22
Superman's most recent animated series could have been a great show, but it never quite made it. Part of the problem was an unfair comparison to the Batman series, which had just finished production (though it would be renewed briefly for the Superman/Batman hour). While Batman immediately had a sense of theme and mood--dark, gothic, and occasionally morbid--Superman suffered from being pushed into the daylight. It's easier to believe that criminals in a city of perpetual night would look and act like maniacs, but in sunny Metropolis it's often difficult to get beyond the silliness of the supervillains. The show's creators made a good decision by incorporating elements of Kirby's Fourth World (e.g., Darkseid's invasion of Earth) into the show, thereby placing Superman in a universe of super-powered beings even more larger-than-life than himself.
Unfortunately, the show did not last long enough to do a great job with the Fourth World, and it wasted too much time on trivial villains like Toyman, Parasite, Livewire and Bizarro. Meanwhile, promising villains like Brainiac (inventively rethought for the show), Metallo and two Kryptonian criminals showed up only rarely and might as well have been tossed altogether. After a fun beginning, where old and new characters were creatively introduced, the show tapered off into mediocrity, and ended with a handful of overly-preachy episodes that couldn't be saved, even by an excellent finale (once again utilizing the Fourth World).
Still, the show has some glorious highlights. The episode "Mxzpixilated" is one of the funniest things ever to hit television, and is one of the few Mxyzptlk stories I enjoy. Brainiac recreated as Krypton's artificial intelligence was a stroke of genius, and provided a new context for his previous "shrunken cities" shtick. Lana Lang as a fashion designer was a great idea that wasn't used often enough, but when it was it worked (especially in "The Late Mr. Kent"). The concept of Supergirl as a native of Krypton's sister planet was also well done, and she was a great, cheery character.
It's unfortunate that the show's creators never quite found the same groove that they found for Batman, but this series was still a valiant attempt at recreating the Superman mythos. Maybe the "Superman Curse" spreads into all attempts to tell Superman stories; very few of the shows and movies manage to do it well. Still, this is one of the best.
Superman: TAS seasons1-3.......2006-08-19
I got this though Ebay,I bidded and won it. I haven't watched it,yet.
You won't regret purchusing this terrific series!.......2006-08-10
If you've never seen Superman the animated series, and if you have the cash, this is the perfect way to enjoy it. Should you choose to purchus volumes I-III, you'll get all 54 episodes of this hit series.
What are you in for if you buy this set? Well, here are some highlights from each volume.
In Volume I, we discover the origin story of Earth's greatest hero in an explosive three part pilot, The Last Son of Krypton. We also get our first look at Lex Luthor, who has spent years having his own way in Metropolis, and isn't happy to see this new savior show up. Superman also faces Brainiac for the first time, and this villain, I must tell you, has strong connections to Superman's past. The Flash also makes a guest appearance in Speed Demons, Superman's first superhero team up. We're also introduced to Lobo, a galactic bounty hunter who's bent on adding Superman to the collection of an alien preserver. Bonus features in this volume include a look at the conception of the series, as well as taking a closer look at some of Superman's fellow protagonists. Oh, and did I mension that we're also introduced to one of Superman's greatest foes, Darksied? Hang on because I'm not done boasting about this fantastic series yet.
In volume II, Superman must face an insane, but well meaning clone of himself, Bizarro, who. And he must also team up with Dr. Fate to stop a powerful demon from transforming all of Metropolis into his slaves. Brainiac also makes a comeback. And Darksied's horrific son journeys to Earth in order to test Superman's metal. But the greatest highlight of Volume II is when the Dark Knight himself ventures to Metropolis. Batman and Superman meet for the first time, and must work together to stop Lex Luthor and the Joker who have also joined forces. An excelent three parter, and a nice taste of what's to come in terms of the Justice League. Bonus features in this volume include a look at the villains of Superman, and several audio commentaries.
In the third and final volume of Superman, Cal El is in for the fight of his life because Darksied has finally decided to set his sights on Earth. Superman must draw on all of his strength in order to defeat his greatest adversary. But this time, Superman's victory comes with a terrible price. These events occur in Apocalypse Now, a very memorable two part episode. But Superman isn't alone in his struggles, for he discovers a surviver of Argo, sister planet to Krypton, and she decides to take up the mantle of Supergirl in another one of my favorite multipart episodes, Little Girl Lost. There are more Superhero team ups in this volume. Superman joins forces once again with Batman to stop Ra's Al Gul. And he must also team up with Aquaman in order to defeat Lex Luthor. And the series ends with a thrilling two part episode entitled Legacy in which Superman is manipulated and brainwashed into attacking Earth, the planet he has sworn to protect. And he must try to regain his reputation, as well as face off against Darksied and the forces of Apocalypse yet again.
So if you have the money to spend, why not buy all three volumes of this wonderful series? This is and will always be my favorite incarnation of Superman. So if you choose to buy this set, enjoy!

Good set.......2007-08-13
I recently bought this set (I'm assuming it's the "corrected version")and my only complaint was that the discs were out of order. Other than that, everything worked just fine.
Wow! Just ... WOW!.......2007-07-29
Is there a number higher than five on this review? Seriously, what's not to love here?! This set (corrected edition) has everything for the Superman enthusiast! All five movies, including all of their special features and added material; the never before seen Richard Donner Cut of Superman II; documentarys; behind the scenes looks and much, much more! This is an AMAZING set! The only bad thing about it is that it will be outdated when the new movies come out (beginning in 2009), and WB is likely to re-release a similar "ultimate" set. And Dammit, I'll buy each and every one of them like the sheep that I am!
Close, but not "Ultimate," .......2007-07-17
Like some of the other reviewers, I purchased a defective disc as well, but with a little bit of patience and waiting, WB was kind enough to replace the damaged pieces.
Credit has to be given for what all this set contains: The four Christopher Reeve films, the Richard Donner Superman II, all the fourties animated cartoons, the Superman Fifitieth Anniversary special, the Bryan Singer documentary, Superman Returns, various interviews and clips.
The deleted scenes were fun. In particular the ones with Gene Hackman from Superman II and IV. His presence really adds to whatever film he's in.
One underrated moment in Superman IV is outstanding moment between Christopher Reeve and Muriel Hemmingway. Yeah! Clark Kent finally gets the girl on his own.
The one omission in my opinion is from Superman 1, and was shown when the movie first premiered on ABC in the early eighties. Then, the network added about fourty to fifty minutes to make the telecast a two night event. We see some of these added moments as extras, but still one missing segment was the final fate of the Kryptonian enforcer who was sent to arrest Jor-El as the planet was beginning to explode. While it was nice to see that ever so quick moment, we don't get the extra where the enforcer is killed on the way to take Jor-El, as a piece of exploding something crashes unto him, and we see his eyes open up briefly in fear.
The scene is only two seconds long, but I wish it had been included in this set. I was hoping it would be included when Donner releases his first Superman 1 deluxe edition on DVD years ago---well, it was not to be.
One does gain an idea where the Superman franchise went wrong in Superman IV. In particular..when observing the actor who was the first Nuclear Man. What were they thinking?
Still. A beautiful package, and maybe WB should release this set again for Christmas 2007 for those who missed it the first time.
Sincerely,
JThree
