Francis Ford Coppola took some of the deep background from the life of Mafia chief Vito Corleone--the patriarch of Mario Puzo's bestselling novel The Godfather--and built around it a stunning sequel to his Oscar-winning, 1972 hit film. Robert De Niro plays Vito as a young Sicilian immigrant in turn-of-the-century New York City's Little Italy. Coppola weaves in and out of the story of Vito's transformation into a powerful crime figure, contrasting that evolution against efforts by son Michael Corleone to spread the family's business into pre-Castro Cuba. As memorable as the first film is, The Godfather II is an amazingly intricate, symmetrical tragedy that touches upon several chapters of 20th-century history and makes a strong case that our destinies are written long before we're born. This was De Niro's first introduction to a lot of filmgoers, and he makes an enormous impression. But even with him and a number of truly brilliant actors (including maestro Lee Strasberg), this is ultimately Pacino's film and a masterful performance. --Tom Keogh
Description
This brilliant companion piece to the original film continues the saga of two generations of successive power within the Corleone family. Coppola tells two stories in Part II: the roots and rise of a young Don Vito, played with uncanny ability by Robert De Niro, and the ascension of Michael (Pacino) as the new Don.
Customer Reviews:
the best sequel of all time.......2007-09-04
This is one of those rare sequels that overshadows the original in every way. This is very dark, sophisticated storytelling that is much more engaging than the straightforward original. If you haven't seen the godfather movies yet, stop with this one and forget part 3 exists.
Ivan Rorick
EXCEPTIONAL SEQUEL......IS IT BETTER THAN THE ORIGINAL?..............2007-09-02
I am a big fan of the Godfather films and I needed to watch them again to see what one is the best IMHO. I have been spoiled because I own a VHS collection that is all 3 films sewn together in chronological order and makes the 3 individual films pale in comparision. Why this has not been relelased on DVD is beyound me! When watching the individual films I must rank the first as the best. I think part two is great, but Brando's Don is such an incredible character that even Pacino can't fill the void. DeNiro does an excellent job playing yound Vito and the film as a whole is exceptional. I just like the original better even if it doesn't go as deep as the sequel. Part two in the second best Mafia movie ever made and that is saying something! The DVD transfer looks very good and there are some interesting extras.
Weak Soap-Operaish Followup to much better Original.......2007-08-11
Godfather Part 2 is so hailed as the greatest film of all time it's time someone burst that overblown bubble and I've got the needle right here. So let's take a closer look at what should be considered a mediocre sequel to the classic film, The Godfather. First of all Marlon Brando is nowhere to be seen here. Instead we get random flashbacks to Robert Deniro as the young Vito. We get some good scenes of old Little Italy though there's a Keystone-cops feel to some of it, especially the comic relief of the slumlord scene.
Part 2 has a much bigger budget but a script with weakened plotlines and dialogue, basically trying to followup everything from Part 1 logically becoming formulaic and soap-operaish, and ending up falling flat.
The film begins with another celebration of some kind. A brother's betrayal aspires to be that of Hamlet, but without the depth or wit (or brevity). It's now the 1950s and Mike is in Nevada and is trying to buy a corrupt Senator. The Senator is I suppose the film producer element of the first, but with nothing creative like a horsehead...just crass dialogue that doesn't ring true. We also get a Mafia hearing in Congress which should have ended up on the cutting room floor.
We also get (the great?) Lee Strasberg as some old shirtless and feeble mobster. He may be a great teacher, but someone tell me why this is an Academy Award winning acting performance! Am I just dumb?
Al Pacino is great as always, this performance following Serpico, but his dialogue doesn't ring true. When he begins, "If history has taught us anything.." I expect some deep wisdom to follow...needless to say it doesn't. Talia Shire's character is also weakened compared to the original's Connie. Here she just "needs money" and wants Mike to forgive Fredo because "he's so sweet".
This mess of a sequel ends with a literal bloodbath, but following the formula of the first, and a final scene with the original cast (sans Brando) the actors of which were paid more than all their good work in the original. I'm not saying it isn't worth seeing, just that it's inferior to the original in many ways. But of course it isn't near as bad as Part 3. My final criticism is that all these mob films intentionally or not glorify criminals. Okay, now you can click "no".
The Hardening of the Idealist.......2007-04-01
Most critics and the Motion Picture Academy agree. Godfather 2 is a worthy sequel to the blockbuster movie, The Godfather.
If you think that the Godfather saga is only about Organized Crime, you are wrong. It is about Family dynamics in a Sicillian family who's business just happens to be Organized Crime.
Michael is the quintessential Idealist. Whereas his father was a pragmatist bound in honor, and his brothers were respectivly a loose cannon and a milquetoast, Michaels idealism turned out to be his downfall. Whereas a pragmatist can be flexible, an idealist always insists that he is right all the time, and he runs his life in such a manner. When your life involves the Underworld, all your ideals will morph you into a pillar of granite. This is what Godfather 2 is all about.
In it we see two stories running paralell tracks. The first story is of Don Vito choosing to be a strongarm to protect his Family, his friends and his honor. Then we see Michael trying to do the same thing, but his ideals get in the way and he chooses to abandon them. He drive his friends and family away from himself by his sheer heartlessness and ruthlessness. In the end of Godfather 2, he has no honor, for he kills everyone in his way. Even his own brother, Fredo! We see in the end him sitting alone on a bench with an icy stare. But after all, he believes that all his actions were not only neccesary, but RIGHT!!! Michael tells Tom Hagen: "I dont feel that I have to kill everybody! Only my enemies." Yet to Michael, in the end, all those who do not agree with him are enemies!
To see Michael deal with his sins and attempt to buy his redemption, you must purchase Godfather 3 from Amazon.com!
Wonderful sequel to the Godfather.......2007-03-30
This is as fantastic a movie as the first part. The Metamorphosis of Michael Corleone which started in the first part reaches its completion in this sequel. He is so besotted with power that he does not want any one opposing him be it his wife, brother, or anyone. This movie shows us how life can change a "War-hero" to a power-drunk godfather.

When Steven Spielberg was an adolescent, his first home movie was a backyard war film. When he toured Europe with Duel in his 20s, he saw old men crumble in front of headstones at Omaha Beach. That image became the opening scene of Saving Private Ryan, his film of a mission following the D-day invasion that many have called the most realistic--and maybe the best--war film ever. With 1998 production standards, Spielberg has been able to create a stunning, unparalleled view of war as hell. We are at Omaha Beach as troops are slaughtered by Germans yet overcome the almost insurmountable odds.
A stalwart Tom Hanks plays Captain Miller, a soldier's soldier, who takes a small band of troops behind enemy lines to retrieve a private whose three brothers have recently been killed in action. It's a public relations move for the Army, but it has historical precedent dating back to the Civil War. Some critics of the film have labeled the central characters stereotypes. If that is so, this movie gives stereotypes a good name: Tom Sizemore as the deft sergeant, Edward Burns as the hotheaded Private Reiben, Barry Pepper as the religious sniper, Adam Goldberg as the lone Jew, Vin Diesel as the oversize Private Caparzo, Giovanni Ribisi as the soulful medic, and Jeremy Davies, who as a meek corporal gives the film its most memorable performance.
The movie is as heavy and realistic as Spielberg's Oscar-winning Schindler's List, but it's more kinetic. Spielberg and his ace technicians (the film won five Oscars: editing (Michael Kahn), cinematography (Janusz Kaminski), sound, sound effects, and directing) deliver battle sequences that wash over the eyes and hit the gut. The violence is extreme but never gratuitous. The final battle, a dizzying display of gusto, empathy, and chaos, leads to a profound repose. Saving Private Ryan touches us deeper than Schindler because it succinctly links the past with how we should feel today. It's the film Spielberg was destined to make. --Doug Thomas
Customer Reviews:
A good but not great, WWII film..........2007-09-06
Though I liked this movie overall, though there are some outstanding shots, sequences, and effects, and though I would probably recommend it to friends and acquaintances as one of the better cinema treatments about World War II, my expectations were too disappointed to engage in high praise of this work. I had many serious "problems" with SPR from the very opening overtly false patriotic flag scene to the very end.
The opening scene of Ryan as an old man visiting the Normandy cemetery was fine except for one very annoying factor, John Williams, lush, overly-sentimental BS musical pretensions, which we've heard 100 times already, and in almost every scene in which this score swelled, I felt it was inappropriate. I would've much rather have heard no music whatsoever throughout the film, or at least a very subtle form of and use of. I don't really like being manipulated like this. And various scenes do this. A lush musical war, no thanks.
The most striking example of the film's almost soulless failure to do justice to its apparent agenda and real blood and guts reality (to show how utterly abominable real war is), brings me to yet another complaint. The films' cinema verite, shaky documentary camera style. NYPD Blue on amphetamines...
A little of this "style" can go a long way. Drenching entire scenes lasting several minutes, was totally ineffective and pretentious to me. Some of the wobbly camera in the opening sequence, was very potent, like the troops running towards the beach. This gave the viewer a real sense of being there, of being in a frantic state of confusion, attempting to move forward into a frightening and imposing blur of horror and motion. However, a bit later, when Hanks and his men are using a mirror at the end of a rifle to try to find out where a particular German machine gun is firing from, why shake the camera? When the medics are trying to fix up wounded men on the beach, why shake the camera? If one were there watching these things, they would simply not be seeing it from this perspective. Again, this whole technique was so overused to me.
What's so disappointing about SPR is that it just could've been done so much better, in so many areas. Long, boring, unimaginative sequences are followed by Hollywood hokum. The truly outstanding radar attack sequence, stood out. The characters were given a REAL identity to me during this portion. But for all the talk (hype?) of blood and gore and entrails in SPR's beginning, to me, the only really powerful depictions of real war in the film, was specifically in the segment when one of the GI's chests was pumping gushes of bright red blood, in addition to some opening shots.
Why wasn't there so much more of this however? Why not show utterly horrible pain and suffering and death? That which is real war? That which is happening even as I write this, which I hope Spielberg or one of his other cronies may deal with in the near future, about Iraq. Holding my breath, but not too long.
The entire Axis prisoner scene, was good. There was a real tension here, and I easily felt myself not watching a movie anymore, but feeling as if I had some sort of personal stake in what I was watching. In SPR, Spielberg's more delicate and subtly discriminating add-ons, were clearly the best moments of the film. All the blood and violence and special effects of the opening and closing sections (the closing sections having nearly as much power as the opening ones), never came close for me, in displaying the real horror of war, than this one little middle section, which culminated in two men on the same side, almost killing each other because a "bad guy" POW was being released.
There were and are WAY TOO MANY shots for me of Americans mowing down whole groups of German soldiers, like as if this was a standard scene out of WWII (it wasn't). It IS a standard, stereotypical scene out of WWII MOVIES however. I had hoped for much more however, in SPR. Otherwise, in Spielberg's fantasy WWII world, whole German squads can easily be mowed down by a single GI, and tanks and other weapons can be disabled with nothing more than some good old GI Joe bravery. For all the effects, for all the blood and guts that ARE shown, SPR continually refuses to step over certain lines. It wants to be two things at once, which is its ultimate undoing, to show the "reality" of war, but to do it in an entertaining Hollywood story suited for mass consumption.
I have to say this film, like digestible war-movie filler candy before and after, satisfies for awhile, but there are no great ideas here, no true moral or political or philosophical "center" or soul. And there is nothing groundbreaking here except for a few FX enhanced "war scenes." There are much better WWI&II films, of all stripes. I'd suggest "Enemy at the Gates," or "Paths of Glory,' or even the low budget "A Midnight Clear." For starters.
This is a fairly good war film, but not a "great" war film. DVD extras aside. What the film clearly does wrong, cannot in the final analysis, overcome the few things it does really great and right. Entertaining? Yes. Transcendent? But only if one is easily prone to hype, political, or cinematic, or falsely (IMO) "patriotic" propaganda. This viewer is none of the above, and in the end, to me is just another Steven Spielberg misfire, which garnered and continues to receive critical/popular praise truly undeserved, compared to so many other much more worthy WWII films. As well as documentaries. I wish the whole script had been rewritten/filmed, concentrating on D-Day alone, and never diverted into a corny, schmaltzy retread of almost any other good or bad WWII flick since, or afterwards.
VISCERAL IN-YOUR-FACE WAR EPIC THAT YOU WON'T FORGET!!.......2007-09-05
'SAVING PRIVATE RYAN' STRUCK ME AS: HARD-HITTING - GRAPHIC & EMOTIONAL WITHOUT OVERT SENTIMENTALISM OR SIMPLY THE 'CITIZEN KANE' OF WAR FILMS,
VERY SIMPLY STATED:
This is the most visceral, in-your-face war epic I have ever experienced. But "Saving Private Ryan" is much more than that, as it gives us a well-developed story line and characters we come to care about during the natural unfolding of the story.
WHAT'S IT ALL ABOUT?:
After landing on Normandy through the most visceral and graphically-realistic re-creation ever put to film, this ensemble of American soldiers and the film itself slow down to catch their breath and hand us a great story, having now prepared us for it. The heroic "everyman" types that comprise this small band are fleshed out as they go through their mission to find Private Ryan. It's a sort of follow-the-yellow-brick-road-to-Hell kind of mission that is just about impossible for them to reconcile. What is so important about Private Ryan? See the film and you will find out.
BOTTOM LINE:
Action, drama, and morality are all mixed together in the cauldron of wholesale killing that was the second World War. The "right thing" to do is very difficult to decipher, both by these soldiers and by us viewers, but in no film is the topic more in-your-face realistic and emotionally-supercharged.
After seeing the Normandy sequences in this film, such similar epic recreations as in "The Longest Day" seem not just tame, but also emotionally-removed and from a safe distance. "Saving Private Ryan" is one of the best and most captivating films of any genre that I have ever experienced.

ABOUT THE DVD:
Great Transfer of both audio and video. Compared to the VHS edition, it is like viewing a different and better film due to the transfer, NOT any change in the content, which is identical.
"Director's Message" is well put and needs to be said, but I can only say I wish there was more, a lot more.
Behind-The-Scenes Featurette: A segment titled "Into The Breach" was excellent, but frankly this film needs more than a 24-minute short and you can get more on the 2-Disk DVD 60th Anniversary edition.
I think 5stars says it all!!.......2007-08-24
Without doubt this movie ranks in my top 5 of all time favourites! In fact I have just recently played the Medal of Honour PC game which begins in the same way as this movie does. Except for the harsh reality of the movie!!! The most astonishing start to any movie I have ever seen (Ghost Ship comes close), this movie is just incredible. Buy it, Watch it & then watch it again...... I may have to purchase a second!!!!
Unbelievable.......2007-08-23
Great War, WWII movie. you have to see it. Great graphics, realism and plot. MUST SEE!!!
A fantastic movie that left me drained.......2007-08-15
From the opening scenes to coming full circle in the closing scenes, Saving Private Ryan is a movie and emotionally draining film that leaves you analyzing your own life to determine if you have led a life worth the sacrifices the men and women of our armed forces have made.
Speilberg has created another masterpiece. Just when I thought he could not create a movie more vital than Schindler's List, he comes up with Saving Private Ryan. I cannot say enough about this film. If bloody realism is not something you can stomach then move past the initial Normandy invasion scenes. If you can stomach it though, I encourage watching the scenes because they set the tone for the characters.
This is one of a few films every household should own.

Brother Bear has a dramatic story--after he kills a bear, a young hunter named Kenai (voiced by Joaquin Phoenix, Gladiator) in prehistoric North America is turned into a bear himself and hunted by his own brother--but the animated movie's tone is more earnest and warm than tragic, focusing on the unfolding relationship between Kenai and an orphaned bear cub named Koda (voiced by Jeremy Suarez). However, it's often the comic supporting characters who prove the most popular, and a pair of moose voiced by Rick Moranis and Doug Thomas in their McKenzie brothers/Canadian dude mode (from SCTV and the movie Strange Brew) will win many fans. The songs by Phil Collins are typically negligible, but the hand-drawn animation is lush (occasional flashes of computer-generated animation clash with the movie's overall look). Kids will also enjoy the mammoths; no sabre-toothed tigers, unfortunately. --Bret Fetzer
Description
Disney proudly presents BROTHER BEAR, an epic animated adventure full of comedy and heart. With five great new songs from Academy Award winner Phil Collins (1999 Best Original Song, "You'll Be In My Heart," from TARZAN(R)), it's "pure Disney magic from beginning to end!" raves Clay Smith of Access Hollywood. When an impulsive boy named Kenai is magically transformed into a bear, he must literally walk in another's footsteps until he learns some valuable life lessons. His courageous and often zany journey introduces him to a forest full of wildlife, including the lovable bear cub Koda, hilarious moose Rutt and Tuke, woolly mammoths, rambunctious rams, and more! BROTHER BEAR is "a charming, enchanting story for kids of all ages!" ( Larry King, CNN)

Brother Bear.......2007-08-24
Good Disney movie. Could be a future classic. Great music and disney humor. However, I don't recommend it's sequel, Brother Bear 2.

This is an advanced movie of true indians!
I can't stress how well this was made anyone can watch this brave movie for the love and betrayl.
Surprisingly touching...!.......2007-08-05
For the first time in, oh, I don't know how many years, Disney managed to once again deliver a movie that from start to finish is a delight. Released after "Treasure Planet" (2002), Brother Bear is a wonderful film that beautifully blends a great original story, characters and music, carefully crafted together with a working balance between drama and comedy, together with stunning visuals and lively animation. No Disney animated film had managed to do this since "Tarzan" (1999), or perhaps even "The Lion King" (1994). A financial success, "Brother Bear" saw rather mixed reviews from critics; the fact that the film was released during a time in which Disney animation seems to be facing hard years might have had something to do with that. To me, "Brother Bear" brought hope that Disney will one day be able to return to deliver masterpieces like those from the golden ages, "Bambi" (1942), "Lady and the Tramp" (1955) or "The Rescuers" (1977) to name a few.
"Brother Bear" tells the story of Kenai and his two brothers; the story takes place long, long ago in North America. On the day in which he is to become a man, Kenai receives the token that is to guide him through life: the bear of love. Kenai is upset, for he believes that bears have no feelings, that they're savage creatures who'll look for any excuse to harm, hunt and even kill a human. He is jealous of the tokens given to his older brothers, the eagle of guidance for the eldest, Sitka and the wolf of wisdom for the middle brother, Denahi. One day, Kenai neglects his duties, and the hard work of the brothers goes to waste as a bear comes and steals all of their fish. Kenai, after being scolded by Denahi, decides to go after the bear and soon finds himself in great danger. His two brothers run to save him, which eventually costs the life of Sitka as he attempts to save his two brothers. Lead by anger and grief, Kenai feels that the only thing for him to do is to hunt the bear that killed his brother. Kenai doesn't realize the mistake he's made and soon is surrounded by the Great Spirits of the Earth and transformed into a bear. Tanana, the shaman woman, tells him that it is time for him to make up for what he's done wrong and sends him in search of the place where the lights touch the earth. Lost and confused in his journey, Kenai meets a little bear cub named Koda, whom he finds to be a complete pain in the neck. Unable to get rid of him, Kenai promises to help Koda find his mother, while at the same time looking for "where the lights touch the earth", for Koda seems to know the place. Together through forests and over mountains, Kenai and Koda develop a brotherly affection for each other and meet all kinds of interesting characters and creatures, as well as the antagonizing appearance of Denahi, who does not recognize Kenai and believes the bear to have killed his brother. Before the journey is through, Kenai will learn to take responsibility for his actions and to see through the eyes of what had once been his enemy, at the same time learning what really makes a man.
"Brother Bear" is a very touching story. For the first time in a very long time, Disney does not overshadow the dramatic elements of the film with trashy comedy and out-of-place comic characters, instead, like I've already said, the film maintains a very good balance of good comedy and effective drama and emotion. Characters like the moose, Rutt and Tuke are added for effective comic relief, while the rest of the main characters are well developed. "Brother Bear" may be the last great Disney animated feature for a long time still, because it doesn't look like things are getting any better, so I recommend anyone who loves a great Disney tale to give this one a try. The film includes great music from Phil Collins as well as a breathtaking soundtrack. Highly recommended, a winner!
Great movie in a Native American tradition.......2007-05-29
I loved this movie because it is very close to the Native American tradition and beliefs. Being raised around a Native American tribe myself, I can appreciate the traditions and beliefs of this story. I thought that the story was told well and in a manner of "respect" for brother that was "fearful" of his own totem. Yes, like all Disney movies there is a "moral" to the story and this one is a good one. What you fear most is what you become so you can understand it better. I recommend this movie to all children both young and old. Don't miss this one!!!!
you have to get this for your family.......2007-04-11
Beautiful animation, superb message and fantastic voice cast. You wont be disappointed with this Disney film.

When it comes down to naming the best Western of all time, the list usually narrows to three completely different pictures: John Ford's The Searchers, Howard Hawks's Red River, and Hawks's Rio Bravo. About the only thing they all have in common is that they all star John Wayne. But while The Searchers is an epic quest for revenge and Red River is a sweeping cattle-drive drama ("Take 'em to Missouri! Yeeee-hah!"), Rio Bravo is on a much more modest scale. Basically, it comes down to Sheriff John T. Chance (Wayne), his sobering-up alcoholic friend Dude (Dean Martin), the hotshot new kid Colorado (Ricky Nelson), and deputy-sidekick Stumpy (Walter Brennan), sittin' around in the town jail, drinkin' black cofee, shootin' the breeze, and occasionally, singin' a song. Hawks--who, like his pal Ernest Hemingway, lived by the code of "grace under pressure"--said he made Rio Bravo as a rebuke to High Noon, in which sheriff Gary Cooper begged for townspeople to help him. So, Hawks made Wayne's Sheriff Chance a consummate professional--he may be getting old and fat, but he knows how to do his job, and he doesn't want amateurs getting mixed up in his business; they could get hurt. This most entertaining of movies also achieved some notoriety in the '90s when Quentin Tarantino (director of Pulp Fiction, Reservoir Dogs, and Jackie Brown) revealed that he uses it as a litmus test for prospective girlfriends. Oh, and if the configuration of characters sounds familiar, it should: Hawks remade Rio Bravo two more times--as El Dorado in 1967, with Wayne, Robert Mitchum, and James Caan; and as Rio Lobo in 1970, with Wayne, Jack Elam, and Christopher Mitchum. --Jim Emerson

Rio Bravo 1958 (Two-Disc Special Edition).......2007-08-25
Slam-bang , exiciting, funny . One of the all-time great Westerns . On one side is an army of gunmen dead-set on springing a mordeous sidekick from jail . On the other is the Sheriff John T. Change and his deputies: one a drunk , the other a cripple . Place your bets . John Wayne (Chance) 1907-1979 in RIO BRAVO , a lean Western classic packing solid heroism and a strong emotional core . He's joined by Dean Martin (1917-1995) as it the deputy coming off a two-year drunk , Walter Brennan (1894-1974) as the old coot whose spirit outmatches his hobbled stride. Ricky Nelson (1940-1985) as a youth out of place himself and Angie Dickinson (1931 - ) as a scarlet woman with one eye on Chance . Directed Howard Hawks (1896-1977) lifted the Western to new Hights with RED RIVER (1948). Capturing the Legendary West with a stellar cast in peak form , he does it again here . High Quality Transfer .
GREAT MOVIE.......2007-08-12
A famous western that fully deserves it's status as one of the genre's greatest, 'Rio Bravo' is a laconic classic. The plot is simple, the pace is relaxed but there's real movie magic at work here, with a superb cast under Howard Hawks' assured direction. Front and centre is the effortless charisma of John Wayne, he's commanding, funny and even vunerable as the iconic Sheriff John T. Chance. Dean Martin is terrific as Dude, the drunken deputy trying to sober up, he's so underrated as an actor and performs marvellously here. And who can forget Walter Brennan as Stumpy? Add music sensation of the day Ricky Nelson, then watch these men sit round the jail bonding, arguing and even singing a song. The chemistry is amazing, full of humour and wonderful warmth. And Angie Dickinson is absolutely luscious as the Duke's fiesty love interest. So here's a great ol' fashioned classic that has it all. A must see for any movie buff.
Rio Dorado, or I mean Bravo!.......2007-07-26
This is classic John Wayne and Howard Hawks. If you love John Wayne movies you'll love this one. Now personally I enjoyed El Dorado better than this one and sure they are basically the same movie, but they are different enough that you can watch them both and enjoy them for different reasons.
In Rio Bravo, unlike El dorado, Wayne is the sheriff and he is definitely the law. This is a powerful man that knows his job. Dean Martin is his drunken deputy, Dude, who fell apart over a woman we never meet. Part of the fun and drama of this movie is Martin becoming the man he used to be while he and Wayne keep guard over the murderous Joe Burdette played by a smug Claude Akins, while dodging bullets and threats from Nathan Burdette (Joe's wiser brother) played by John Russell.
Along for laughs (and there's plenty) are Walter Brennan playing the old crippled jail hand Stumpy and Pedro Gonzalez Gonzalez as the hotel owner. Of course there's the love interest for Wayne as well, and although done ok, it really isn't the reason to keep watching this movie over and over again.
Rio Bravo isn't Wayne's best movie, but it is one of my favorites and one I can continue to watch year after year.
Still cut by Warner ?.......2007-07-16
I have european and american prior releases. Cut. First the full image that I have on VHS from TV, is cut on dvds by two bars top and bottom to get a 1:85 image ratio, as Warner says "as shown first in theaters". But since, Warner, Tv offered the full image version for all those who missed the initial release !, and you seem to ignore that remote control allows dvd player or large screen tv to enlarge the image for those who chose it. Still planning to gain money one day releasing the "full image" version, uh ? (as for the Hammer films)
Second, I saw the movie in the 50s in Paris, and at origin, and still in mid-70s in Paris in the original subtitled version in theaters (full screen), because Walter Brennan asks him to keep his promise, Dean Martin washes himself in a bucket in the prison with the others around. It is WHY he changes his dirty clothes for clean ones, BEFORE he announces going to the hotel for a bath (to finish details of course).
Is this still cut ?

The bonds of true friendship and love are powerful enough to persist through even the most extreme circumstances, but can even the strongest bond endure when a young man and a young woman are split apart by the spirits? Since being turned into a bear as punishment for his insensitivity in Brother Bear, Kenai has managed to find true happiness and a compelling sense of purpose in his new relationship with his adopted brother Koda. But when Kenai's old friend Nita prepares for her wedding day with another man, the spirits send a sign indicating that a strong connection still exists between Kenai and Nita. The tribe Shaman suggests that the two join forces in a ritual to sever the bond between them and Nita, newly endowed with the ability to communicate with animals, seeks out Kenai in the woods. Even as the two friends resolutely journey to break the connection between them, the inescapable bond between them strengthens and threatens to disrupt not only Nita's upcoming marriage, but the special relationship between Kenai and Koda. In the end, destiny may require that each of the three choose between his or her happiness and the happiness of the other two. Like its predecessor Brother Bear, Brother Bear 2 features lush animation; a nice blend of action, suspense, and comedy; and a powerful message. (Ages 3 - 12) --Tami Horiuchi
Description
We're back in an all-new movie, eh? Beauty. And not just us moose, but the large bear (that's Kenai) and his little brother bear (that's Koda) and also this new girl named Nita. She's a handful, eh? Nita knew Large Bear way back when he wasn't a bear. That was in the first movie, remember? Anyway, they thought they were gonna be together forever even though they get along like two angry beavers in a mud hut. Okay, so now the Great Spirits say they have to go on a great big, exciting journey to break the pact. So don't trample off. Join me and my brother -- oh, and there's a couple fetching moosettes in this story too -- for all sorts of laughs and wild adventure. (See what I did. I used the word "wild" 'cause we're out in the woods.) Beauty. It's gonna be tons of fun for the whole family, eh?

Didn't care for it. Poor story line. Did not live up to Disney standards.
Great movie.......2007-08-09
My kids and I really enjoyed seeing the 2nd movie. We thought it was really well done. A great story and love the songs. Thought it was better than the original
Brother Bear 2.......2007-03-25
This movie definately wasn't as good as the first one and the first one wasn't as good as it should've been. This one is very cheesy. I think it was made just to make money. I hate those kind of movies - sequels and prequels made just for the money, no love put into it. And the voice actor for "brother bear" is different - I like the one from the first movie better. And the story is also cheesy - the first movie, in a way, brings a few tears to your eyes. Gosh, the first movie was sad, but it was cool.
Color Me a Sentimentalist, but I Like BB2 Even Better than the Original.......2007-02-09
Yes, it is true that the original Brother Bear was excellent, that it was more "earthy" than Brother Bear 2, and that using the voice of Wanda Sykes as the "Sha-Woman" in this sequel was a little odd. Overall, however, I actually found this movie more moving and more enjoyable to watch--over and over again--than the original Brother Bear. I also liked the score and the songs just as well, if not better, in this wonderful sequel. (What the heck does singer-songwriter Melissa Etheridge's sexual orientation have to do with anything? See review dated Oct 9, 2006.)
[Warning: Next paragraph may contain minor "spoilers."]
I have raised two sons. Now, I am raising two daughters, so perhaps I have become a sentimentalist! Well, so be it. I am touched, and I want my children to be touched emotionally, when we see the occasional examples of true love in these Disney movies; such as, when Koda is willing to let Kenai return to human form if that is what will make Kenai happy, when Kenai later refuses because his little brother needs him, or in the Tarzan movies when Kala says to Tarzan that all she wants as a mom is for him to be happy--and means it, even though it would make her very sad if he leaves. Or, when Tarzan says: "... you will always be my mother." And when Kerchak finally acknowledges Tarzan as "my son." This depth of love--true love--is also displayed by Feline in Bambi II as she is genuinely happy for Bambi to be running off with his father when she would undoubtedly prefer than he stay and play with her.
These are moments that should touch us emotionally, and perhaps the "Two Worlds - One Family" theme of the Tarzan movies is particularly meaningful to us because our two adopted girls have different racial backgrounds.
Anyway, for whatever it may be worth, I love Brother Bear 2 and enjoy sharing it with all of those close to me who can appreciate this kind of movie. Watch it. I think you will find that the strong criticisms of some are overstated and perhaps even unjustified--but that's why we have chocolate and vanilla, n'est pas??!!!
Great gift........2007-02-06
My daughter watched this movie 10 times in one sitting.
The smiles are worth it.

Director Francis Coppola's adaptation of the popular S.E. Hinton novel about the price of rebellious youth is notable chiefly for the stunning cast of young actors who went on to rich and varied careers. In supporting roles, the film features the likes of Tom Cruise, Patrick Swayze, Diane Lane, Rob Lowe, Emilio Estevez, and Tom Waits, among others. The story centers on two rival gangs in the early 1960s Midwest, and the violent turf wars that escalate and tragically claim young lives. C. Thomas Howell plays the central character who yearns to prove himself and be accepted by his older brothers' gang, while at the same time finding his first love and dreaming of a life beyond his dead end existence. Geared toward the teenage crowd, the film nonetheless features some fine direction from Coppola in a story that evokes memories of the classic coming-of-age films of the 1950s. --Robert Lane
Amazon.com
No one was surprised when Francis Ford Coppola revisited Apocalypse Now, but his overhaul of The Outsiders raised a few eyebrows. Here was a modestly successful film better remembered for its Brat Pack cast than its Oscar-winning director, but The Complete Novel succeeds in bringing more of S.E. Hinton's young adult classic to the screen along with Coppola's epic vision. The story remains the same: The working class greasers and wealthy Socs ("Socials") of Tulsa, OK, circa 1966, are at war. Despite the bigger names in the cast--Patrick Swayze, Emilio Estevez, Rob Lowe--the friendship between C. Thomas Howell's Ponyboy and Ralph Macchio's doomed Johnny is still the focus. If anything, Tom Cruise, as an obnoxious greaser, gives the least promising performance, while Matt Dillon (Crash) as the unpredictable Dally and Diane Lane (Unfaithful) as the beautiful Cherry provide a taste of the mature work to come. Aside from 22 minutes of restored footage (including a prologue and epilogue), which add heart and grandeur, The Complete Novel includes several new rock and roll tracks, most by Elvis Presley. In the end, the revamped Outsiders still plays like a cross between Rebel Without a Cause and The Last Picture Show--and that's a good thing. --Kathleen C. Fennessy
Description
In 1983, Francis Ford Coppola's film of S.E. Hinton's novel struck a powerful chord with audiences, capturing the intense feelings of being caught between childhood and adulthood, and not belonging anywhere. Decades later, Coppola has revisited the film and reintegrated 22 minutes of character-enriching footage, including a new beginnning and ending more true to the book. A rousing new rock-n-roll soundtrack featuring six songs from Elvis Presley and other music greats make this new version of The Outsiders one of movie history's great rediscoveries.

well..........2007-09-07
This is a pretty good movie. Not near as good as the book, The Outsiders though! That is true with most books turned in to movies. So read the book...One bad thing about the movie is that I don't think they developed Soda's character very well, which is disappointing, because in the book he's a major character.
The Outsiders.......2007-09-04
Great copy, but not compatible with the South african region. However we can play it through our computer.
Great Movie.......2007-08-17
The movies of the 80's can't be beat and this is one of the very best.
Better in moments, but soundtrack is terribly distracting.......2007-07-28
First the Good:
I am a teacher and my students complain every year that the "Ponyboy gets jumped" scene is not in the original. I thought the extra footage in the beginning really helped a lot. It stayed much closer to the book, but with anything the book is always better. Read it. I really liked the character development. The original movie stands well enough on its own, but if you hadn't read the book there are definite gaps.
The Bad:
The new soundtrack is awful. I am no Stevie Wonder fanatic, but this retro 60s music did NOT fit the mood in many places. It was so distracting that I almost turned it off. (hence my 3 stars and really thought about 2 stars)
With all the extras I would have liked to see a flash back of Johnny getting beat up and more "bonding" time between Cherry and Ponyboy while they were in line. The book develops this so much better.
I also did not like Ponyboy and Cherry meeting up at the end and she ignores him. The book leaves that much more open ended and in fact implies that Cherry and Ponyboy are the true "Outsiders" because they can see "outside the box" of their respective gangs. Randy and Johnny also fit into that category.
I have never liked the Dally death scene in the movie. In the book it was more suicidal and he was in control of his own death and the movie makes him out to be a victim.
All in all I wish they would have alternate sound tracks so I could play the original score, or they could have just hired someone to write a new score. The movie and book have sold enough copies that they should have gotten in right.
I plan on showing the old version to my students or possibly show the first 20 min of this one and then pop in the old one.
The Outsiders.......2007-07-23
I think it is a great movie. I like it when I was a teenager. I bought it for my teenage boy. He enjoyed it

This massive, in-depth study of the dark Western icon comes off with mixed results. Trying to capture the whole life, (warts and all) of the lawman-criminal-brother-fortune hunter, director Lawrence Kasdan gains points for sheer scale, giving us a rich epic painted in dark colors with gritty settings. But the visual poetry and extensive foreshadowing ruin the dramatic drive. Some scenes have as much impact as stalker movies; you're just waiting for someone to get knocked off. As Earp, Kevin Costner is not afraid to look rumpled and play colorlessly (as in The Bodyguard), but it saps the energy of this 3-hour-plus film. The only relief is Dennis Quaid as a droll Doc Holiday, a much more engaging character. New faces Linden Ashby and Joanna Going (as an Earp brother and a lover, respectively) are solid finds, though the remainder of the female cast is barely given anything to do. Best is the first half, with Costner, as hip as he was in his Silverado days, going through a series of ups and downs until he accidentally finds his profession. Great set design (Ida Random) utilizes dozens of similar settings that always look distinctive. Recommended to fans of the star and the genre, but the story never justifies its length. --Doug Thomas
Description
Kevin Costner plays the most famous lawman ever to stride the Wild West. In a gritty, complex portrayal hailed as a "classic American performance" (Bob Campbell, Newhouse Newspapers), Academy Award winner Costner (Dances with Wolves, The Bodyguard) plays the man who became a myth in acclaimed director Lawrence Kasdan's (The Big Chill, Silverado) epic, action-filled saga. Gene Hackman, an Oscar winner for Unforgiven, as Wyatt's iron-willed father, and Dennis Quaid (The Big Easy, The Right Stuff) as Earp's deadly best friend Doc Holliday add power to this mammoth, hard-hitting Western. From Wichita to Dodge City to the O.K. Corral in Tombstone, Arizona, Wyatt Earp is a thrilling journey of romance, adventure and desperate, heroic action.

Could have been better, could have been worse........2007-09-12
First off, I'm a nut for movies about Wyatt Earp. From John Ford's My Darling Clementine to two John Sturges' films Gunfight at the O.K. Corral & Hour of the Gun to even George Cosmatos' Tombstone. It's interesting to see how each film tackles the western legend of honor and vengence. It's also interesting to note that no matter how closer to depicting the actual events the later films, including this one, has gotten, one thing never changes. The Earps are always shown as the good guys and the Clanton/McLaury "gang" as the outlaws. In truth, the events in Tombstone Arizona in the early 1880's was mostly a turf war. Both sides wanted control of Tombstone for the purpose of making money and both sides were unwilling to compromise. Both groups had the "law" on their side with the Earps as town Marshalls and Cochise County Sheriff John Behan joining the Clanton/McLaury side.
What makes Costner's "Wyatt Earp" unique to all the other films is for the first time we see the early life of Wyatt. We see him as a happy-go-lucky young man in awe of all that is around him. We get to see the tragedy of the death of his first wife and how it effected him. And we see him turn into the cold, stubborn person he became. Costner does a good job in his portrayal of Earp and the filming of the movie is outstanding. And for one of the first times that I know of, we see the character of Jame Earp portrayed. In most, if not all, other films it's mostly Wyatt, Virgil & Morgan, although "Gunfight at the O.K. Corral" did have a small part of a younger Earp (Warren?) who ends up getting killed early on.
On the character of Doc Holiday, it's my opinion that Dennis Quaid here has done the best job at portaying and sick, surly, and almost suicidal drunkard & killer that Holiday is know to have been. His one redeeming quality is his loyalty to Wyatt. A close second is Victor Mature in the mostly fictional "My Darling Clementine."
Some of the downsides to this movie: It's long, too long. I understand it's an epic but there are times when certain scenes have a filler feel to them, just not necessary. The music is pretty forgettable. And the character of Josie, played by Joanna Going, is not very compelling. The actress does a decent job but in comparing her to, say, Dana Delany in Tombstone, she's just not the force that you can imagine grabbing Wyatt's affection after all the years of hiding behind his sorrow.
All-in-All, a decent film, worth watching. I would recommend it to any western fan and any Costner fan. Maybe not as good as his western Open Range but believe me, much better that most of his other offerings.
Well worth the 3 hours time you'll invest.......2007-09-11
After reading previous reviews on Costner's "Wyatt Earp" I have to say that most people miss the point of this movie. Rather than trying to be an entertaining "Indiana Jones cliff-hanger" I feel the film's producers and director wanted more of a biography of the Earp family that is more historically accurate, as opposed to a "rock 'em sock 'em" adventure. This is why the film runs so long, it needs to tell a long story. The Earp's time in Tombstone and the famous OK Corral gunfight was only a fraction of the Earp's existence. It has been made into, via Hollywood and endless story-telling throughout the years, much more than it really was -- a feud between rival factions that was common in America's move West during the 19th century.
In my opinion, if the makers of the film made any blunders in the story-line and plot in regards to making an interesting big-budget western epic, they dwell too much on the old Hollywood formula of making the famous gunfight the "excitement fulcrum," thus forcing the early part of the film to spend lots of time leading up to it. This forces the rest of the film's story of the "vengeance ride" -- a part of Wyatt Earp's and Doc Holliday's lives that was by itself exciting, with enough material for its own separate film -- seem anti-climatic. In other words, the film tries to tell too much.
That being said, I highly recommend watching this film, not for its lack of being exciting (it does has its moments however), but as a wonderful western bio-epic that captures the spirit of the old West. Dennis Quaid puts on a stellar performance as Doc Holliday (much better than Val Kilmer's more-or-less comedic approach in "Tombstone"), and it is beautifully shot, with scenes constantly augmented with a soaring soundtrack. Kevin Costner in the lead Wyatt Earp role doesn't try to make something out of nothing by over-acting. He allows the story of the Earps tell itself -- something you don't see much from actors. The strength and appeal of this movie lies in its sum and essence, not its "excitement factor."
As far as the lengthy edit goes, set aside 3 hours of your time, settle back, and get yourself an extra bowl of popcorn. You're in for a treat.
Excuse me, was I yawning?.......2007-09-05
This version of Wyatt Earp's life is not just long, but it's so commercially crafted that I have to ask if every line was written and performed to be a media quote. I'm sure the trailers were very compelling, but.... give me a break! Who's running Hollywood, the Marketing Departments? Perhaps, in another age, this might have been regarded as melodramatic. In this age, two thumbs down.
There are some fine actors here. Unfortunately, they have been written to be and directed to be characters less than the capability of their talent. This movie is not simply a gritty western, nor is it a great romance, nor is it an ambitious biography, but it tries to be all of these without finally defining itself. I want to assume that most of the "facts" of the movie are fairly true, or "Hollywood true," which compelled me to watch it to the end, but the dialogue is patterned and scripted (well, duh!) and predictable. I'm not talking about everyday speech, but the plethora of those one liners that we just know that they must have said.
Foreshadowing is one thing, but orchestrated, TV-level plot revelations are not just an insult to an intelligent viewer, but, alas, boring. To even compare this (as some previous reviewers have) to The Unforgiven is an affront to the Western as a genre. Over-managed, predictable, but of some historical/biographical interest, this version is lamentable not just for the waste of talent we must endure to see it through to the end, but for the offense to the profession of dramatic portrayal. I'm not surprised that the pros panned it.
Wyatt Earp.......2007-09-04
My wife and I enjoy Westerns. We believe this movie to be one of the all-time best. Kevin Costner, Dennis Quaid and Bill Pullman all do some fine turns at acting in this here movin' picture show.
We purchased the two disc special edition set as some "onery varmint" went and stole our VHS tapes. Probably did us a favor, I reckon.

Well, bless my beautiful hide! Director Stanley Donen invests this rollicking musical with a hearty exuberance. Howard Keel, with his big-as-all-outdoors baritone, stars as a bold "mountain man" living in the Oregon woods who brings home a bride (plucky songbird soprano Jane Powell) to his six slovenly brothers. Taming the rambunctious brood, Jane proceeds to make gentlemen of them so they can woo sweethearts of their own. But old habits die hard: their flirting gives way to fighting in the film's celebrated barn-raising scene, a lively acrobatic dance number exuberantly choreographed by Michael Kidd. Big brother chimes in with his own brand of advice--an old-fashioned kidnapping! Donen manages to get away with such a politically incorrect plot by investing the boys with a innocent sweetness, most notably the youngest brother played with genial earnestness by Rusty (Russ) Tamblyn (pre-West Side Story). This modest production became a huge hit and remains one of MGM's best-loved musical comedies, an energetic, high-kicking classic. --Sean Axmaker

7 Brides for 7 Brothers.......2007-08-23
I have been looking for this movie. I am a senior citizen and some movies I loved when I was younger you can't find. At Amazon most of time you can find the "oldies but goodies". I have never been disappointed in the products I have purchased from Amazon.
Classic musical love story.......2007-07-27
I have loved this movie for years. My two daughters in their early 20's love it, too. I'd had it on VHS and I was late getting my DVD to add to my movie collection. This was a MUST HAVE. I enjoy watching it each time as much as the first. Love it, love it.

East of Eden is an acknowledged classic, and the starring debut of James Dean lifts it to legendary status. John Steinbeck's novel gave director Elia Kazan a perfect Cain-and-Abel showcase for Dean's iconic screen persona, casting the brooding star as Cal, the younger of two brothers vying for the love of their Bible-thumping father (Raymond Massey) in Monterey, California, at the dawn of World War I. Massey is a lettuce farmer, striving for market domination with an ill-fated refrigeration scheme. Having discovered that his presumed-dead mother (Oscar
® winner Jo Van Fleet) is a brothel owner in nearby Salinas, Cal convinces her to finance an investment that will restore his father's lost fortune, but neither money nor the tenderness of his brother's fiancée (Julie Harris) can assuage Cal's anguished need for paternal acceptance that comes nearly too late. Kazan's oblique camera angles and Dean's tortured emoting may seem extreme by latter-day standards, but their theatrics make East of Eden a timeless tale of family secrets and hard-won affection. --Jeff Shannon
Description
Based on John Steinbeck's novel and directed by Elia Kazan, East of Eden is the first of three major films that make up James Dean's movie legacy. The 24-year-old idol-to-be plays Cal, a wayward Salinas Valley youth who vies for the affection of his hardened father (Raymond Massey) with his favored brother Aron (Richard Davalos). Playing off the haunting sensitivity of Julie Harris, Dean's performance earned one of the film's four Academy Award nominations.* Among the movie's stellar performances, Jo Van Fleet won the Oscar as Best Supporting Actress.
Customer Reviews:
In A Word: Impressive.......2007-09-09
Wow, what an impressive screen debut for a 24-year-old. That was the famous James Dean, here in his first of three starring roles before death took him at a tragically young age. Just as impressive, however, is the overall performance of the rest of the cast, including lesser-known Richard Davalos, who also was making his movie debut.
The most impressive person connected to this movie, however, was director Elia Kazan who not only excelled directing this film but - in the same year - directed "On The Waterfront." Now, that's not a bad year of work!
Overall, it's a solid drama with complex characters who make you reflect about them long after you view this. I don't know why it took so long for me to finally see this movie, but I was impressed. (May I recommend this two-disc, special-edition DVD?). I am surprised it only garnered one Academy Award. I think it deserved more.
Dean on Display.......2007-06-22
Excellent film, but lost much of book's richness. For example, there is no Chinese-American character. Dean exhibits some fine acting.
