For fans and newcomers, this boxed set holds a great collection, including all four great movies. The first in the series, Batman (1989), and arguably the best of the four movies, exudes the moodiness of the Dark Knight's character. Tim Burton's direction and Michael Keaton's rendition of Batman are an electrifying combo. Together they capture the sinister atmosphere of Gotham City and Batman's darkness. Jack Nicholson as the fiendish Joker and Kim Basinger as the resourceful and gorgeous Vicki Vale lend their charm. Three years later, in 1992, Burton and Keaton reunited for Batman Returns. This time our pointy-eared hero has to combat two villains: Danny DeVito as the disturbed and freaky Penguin and Michelle Pfeiffer as Catwoman. In Batman Forever (1995), Joel Schumacher gave his direction to the story with Val Kilmer under the cape. Kilmer keeps the moodiness but adds a little panache to his rendition. His archenemies this time are the Riddler (Jim Carrey) and Two-Face (Tommy Lee Jones). Luckily, he enlists the help of the Boy Wonder, Robin (Chris O'Donnell). The final movie in the series, Batman & Robin, is great eye candy, and this time Schumacher returns with George Clooney as the leading man and Chris O'Donnell again as Robin. Together Batman and Robin battle the icy Mr. Freeze (Arnold Schwarzenegger), with a little help from Batgirl (Alicia Silverstone). Delve into the Gotham City world with the Dark Knight to protect you, and don't forget to make lots of popcorn for this Batman marathon. --Samantha Allen Storey

3 out of 5 stars Batman Series.......2007-07-07

The recently released "Batman Begins" is better than all of these movies combined. Here is how I rate the films in this set:

Batman:
Jack Nicholson is great as the Joker, but that is about it. The ending is bad. Apparently Joker is both bullet proof and missle proof; and his little gun can shoot down Batman's plane. That was really stupid. How the Joker died was dumb too. A plastic statue that weighed maybe 5lbs was stronger than him and a helicopter. Robert Wuhl sucked in the film. Who is that loss? hahaha
B-

Batman Returns:
Danny Devito ruined this movie. He was absolutely atrocious as the Penguin. He died in the end because he couldn't get a glass of ice water hahaha. Christopher Walken was terrible in it as well. The Walken character and his stupid son were useless in the movie. They wasted the Penguin as a villian as this story was absolutely ridiculous. Not much positive things to say except that Michelle Pfiefer was in it.
D-

Batman Forever:
The best of the series. Val Kilmer was good. Nicole Kidman and Jim Carrey were excellent in their parts. My favortie scene is when ED Baglel Jr. gets killed by Riddler. Good stuff. Unfortunately some of it was annoying. Like any scene Tommy Lee Jones was in.
B+

Batman and Robin:
Pretty bad. They should have stopped before making this. George Clooney was pathetic. Not as bad as Batman Returns, but close. I wish Mr. Freeze would have frozen everyone before they could have started the cameras rolling hahaha. This might have been responsible for ending Chris Odonnel's acting career. Where has he been? hahaha. I haven't seen him act since. Uma Thurman was one of the few bright spots.

3 out of 5 stars Not the Real Deal.......2007-06-30

I had seen 'Batman' awhile back. I then purchased and watched 'Batman Begins'. So much for what came before. I will now give the 'Anthology' to whomever wants it. Batman Begins is true to the DC comics and, what I would decribe as, more serious. It is in a way and epic story. Since this is a review of the 'Anthology', it's OK for what it is. But what it's not is 'the real deal'.

3 out of 5 stars Batman...before Bale.......2007-05-25

Alright. I'll try to be brief.
Batman was good. Joker was weird. but it was interesting to see the 80's take on Batman. The new rubber suit looked very, very stiff. I know they all are, but this was the stiffest. I liked the beginning, but the bat sign on his chest has too many sharp angles that looks ugly. Other than that the story was good, very dark too. Keaton doesn't play the rich boy, playboy persona too well but you get used to it. Surprising that it was joker who killed his parents. Very surprising. 3 out of 5 stars.
Batman Returns was really good. Loved the suit.It fit more on Keaton and wasn't bloated like the first. Absolutely great Catwoman. Michelle Phieffer nailed that part.Penguin was really weird but Danny nailed it too. My one gripe is that they should really stage some good fight scenes. It seems like Batman is just a walking display. Good movie. 3 1/2 out of 5 stars.
Batman Forever...well it was a strange movie. New Bruce...New Batman...Different style. Extremely bright crazy lights and alot of an overreacting Two Face. Riddler was great and funny. Good job Jim. I liked this when it first came out mostly because the action improved alot. Great fights. Hideous Batmobile. Great Robin story. I give it a 3 out of 5, only because it was a lot less realistic than Returns.
Batman and Robin was a complete joke. I actually saw this in the theaters. What a bad movie. Period. I heard the same guys who made the Power Rangers kid show made this. No wonder. Way to goofy and stupid. Even the action couldn't save it. Bad Ivy, Bane is a walking, bulking dunce who only says "AAUUURGHH!" What is with Mr. Freeze. Arnold? Of all the people. Arnold? He was so cheesy in this. Batgirl doesn't help either. This is where everyone thought (including myself) that Batman sunk and would never be ressurected...until he "Begins" again in '05. This gets a 1 out of 5.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Box Set! Shame on Amazon!.......2007-04-10

Well, I must tell you guys: this product is awesome! It has everything a fan of Batman needs and wants! The only bad thing about it (at least for me) was that I thought all the discs had Spanish subtitles and that was why I bought it, but then when it arrived home, I noticed that only the movies had the subtitles, the other discs with all the bonus features didn't.

I think Amazon should specify which discs have subtitles and which discs don't, so we -all the customers- know what we are going to get. Is it so difficult to write something like: AVAILABLE SUBTITLES: English, Spanish and French (only in discs 1, 3, 5, and 7). That would be fair; Amazon is not a garage shop, it is an international web site where people from all over the world buy products.

Very disappointed. The video has a bubbble in the plastic and does not play. I would like to exchange it. It was a Christmas present.

A freeze is coming.

Gotham is under siege, this time by not one but THREE supervillains: Mr. Freeze, Poison Ivy and Bane.

The dynamic duo is called to the rescue despite the tension growing between them. Complicating things, Barbara Pennyworth, Alfred's niece, has come to Wayne manor to liberate her ailing uncle from a life of servitude. She also has a secret: a wild side that needs to be tamed.

When an all-out assault is declared on Gotham by Mr. Freeze and Poison Ivy, the caped crusaders rise to the occasion, and this time they have a little help.

If you took the cheesy, camp-filled '60's Batman series and shot it with a huge budget, tons of effects and modern day equipment, Batman & Robin is what you'd get (and is what we got).

Clearly this was the film that killed the Batman franchise. It took eight years for Warner Brothers to recover from the disaster that was this movie.

The story--the "what it's about"--though farfetched, is bearable. It's the dialogue and stupid jokes that catapult this Bat flick a zillion miles into the campy canyon.

On the plus side, if you watch this movie solely for the bright colors, glitter and action, you'll have a good time.

If you're looking for substance, go back to the beginning, namely Burton's '89 triumph.

1 out of 5 stars Holy Crapfest, Batman!.......2007-08-23

This film needed a cameo by Adam West and Burt Ward just to let us know that this was a remake of the 60's TV show! If viewed with this in mind it's a fairly desent movie. But it was very painful to watch one of the most powerful movie franchise's of the late 80's & 90's go straight to Hell. Everything that Frank Miller, Anton Furst, Tim Burton, Neil Adams, Denny O'neil and all the rest of the people who resurrected the Batman name was shot down with this abomination of celuloid.

Thank God Warner Bros. had the good sense to let Batman have an eight year rest until Batman Begins was made.

1 out of 5 stars Why Did They Bother Making This?.......2007-08-13

Ever since Tim Burton and Michael Keaton left the "Batman" series, it's gone straight downhill. "Batman Forever" was lame, and this movie was embarassing. The new Batman movie with Christian Bale is good, however, but I would not recommend this one or "Batman Forever" at all.

2 out of 5 stars bored to tears.......2007-06-08

I made the mistake of paying to see this. I usually like to watch cutie O'Connell but wow boring movie. You would think with special effects & all the digital things they have today maybe they could hide a bad story line. Not so! Really boring.

1 out of 5 stars Batman and Robin: Dull and Duller.......2007-05-27

In all honesty, this DVD was bought rather inexpensively because there is hope in this world that this film will one day become a Rifftrax! Each and every true movie buff has hopes for this.

Clooney is way too smarmy. Chris O'Donnell is way to cocky. Arnold is way too in it for the money. Uma just waltzed thru, hoping her paycheck would clear so she could buy a new car. (at least that's the way it seemed.) And Alicial Silverstone is beautiful, but underused.

The fault lies in so many different areas, it's not funny. Could it be the way too outlandish dialogue and lack of follow thru? Was it because the movie became much more of a cartoon than a comic book? Is it the fault Joel Schumacher and his vision of a 'sexier' Batman and Robin? His vision is usually pretty dead on and talent is usually decent with movies such as A Time to Kill, Falling Down, and The Lost Boys.

My guess is it's Warner Brother's fault because they wanted to milk every last dime out of the general public who had any ounch of fandom left for Batman.

Thank heavens they later let Christopher Nolan have his way with a "reboot," and from that came: Batman Begins (Two-Disc Special Edition)

Buy it, and save it for Rifftrax.

There's no Batmobile, and Robert Lowery looks a bit, ahem, well-fed as the Caped Crusader, but Columbia Pictures' 1949 black-and-white serial Batman and Robin is up to its cape and cowl in cliffhangers, crime capers, and good old-fashioned rock-em-sock-em action. Directed at a breakneck pace by serial vet Spencer Gordon Bennett, the Complete 1949 Movie Serial Collection's 15 episodes pits Lowery's Batman and Johnny Duncan as the Boy Wonder against arch-villain The Wizard, who has designs on a remote-control device that doubles as a death ray. Jane Adams's Vicki Vale is on hand to fall into peril at least once per episode, while Ed Wood regular Lyle Talbot looks on sternly as Commissioner Gordon. Viewers weaned on Tim Burton's dark, sleek interpretation of the Batman mythos will undoubtedly groan over the creaky dialogue and performances (creator Bob Kane was no fan, either), but fans with designs on absorbing every bit of Bat-trivia possible will probably get a kick out of this well-intentioned attempt at bringing the Dark Knight's adventures to screen. The episodes are divided onto two DVDs, which offer no extras. --Paul Gaita

4 out of 5 stars Batman and Robin vs the wizard.......2007-08-01

Good action & suspense. The wizard made a formable foe for the dynamic duo. Although I thought the ending was a little anti-climatic when Batman finally confronted the Wizard. They were a couple of inconsistancies in the series though. They drove the same car as their alter egos' and nobody was the wiser.:-) I found this version of Robin is a little more mucho then his predecessor was in the 1943 movie series. In this version Batman & Robin worked with the police. Over all I found the the 2 DVD series quite entertaining.

3 out of 5 stars Is That The Batmobile?.......2007-02-18

I liked this serial but it's not as good as Captain Marvel or The Phantom which are both five star. This is a bit dated. The action/fight scenes are sometimes ridiculous and the costumes could definitely do with some work. Enjoyable fun though if you're a nostalgia freak like me, but you will probably be disappointed if you expect too much.

5 out of 5 stars A great Batman actor. even better than Adam West?.......2006-07-01

This is the second Batman serial and it is a tad better than The Batman. This one had me guessing all the way through. A great serial. AMC aired this and all I did was watch this serial. Great fighting sequences. I wish this was in yahoo.com's database. I can't find it there. Its here and you should buy it.

5 out of 5 stars You could'nt make it up........2006-06-07

Just finished playing this DVD and it lived up to its expectations. Typical classic moments include Batman's cowl (Face Mask) being to large for Batman's (Robert Lowery) face, with the result that it slips down past his eyes and he regularly compensates by having to raise his face to the sky to see underneath the eyeholes. An absolute classic moment!!!
As well as this when the Dynamic Duo go one to one with the bad guys in a fight they more often than not get duffed up.
The Batcave consists of a filing cabinet to store their costumes (where else) and a microscope to play the part of a laboratory.
I could go on and on but buy or rent this DVD as it merits a wider audience to appreciate it "hamminess" and appeal to a more innocent time. Loved it.

4 out of 5 stars a great action packed serial .......2006-05-25

this 1949 serial is a sequel to the 1943 batman serial and i must say i was suprised at how good it really was. sure somethings look and sound silly now but at the time thesr movies were the best thig about going to the movies on saturday in the 30's and 40's. my boy get a real kick watching these old serials and we will watch them together when we can. this is a very good transfer and the sound is also very good. check it out

5 out of 5 stars batman the animated series is the best.......2004-05-02

batman the animated series is the best t.v. show of all time. if i were to rate the series it would be a five out of five. my favorite of beyond all episodes is batgirl returns. i wish they would hurry up and bring all of them out in box sets on dvd. this dvd has the episodes:
Eternal Youth
House and Garden
Bird of a feather
& the Mechanic

all great episodes smashed onto a great dvd i would recomend it to people but if it was me i am waiting for july 6th to get the first season on dvd!

2 out of 5 stars [ ].......2004-04-20

What are they doing? This fantastic cartoon, along with Batman the Animated Tales deserves it's own box set. The amount of work that went into this show created an allegiance of fans, all of who are desperate to get their hands on season sets rather than single episodes.
They did it for Transformers, why can't they do it for Batman?
Please release a box set Warner Bros. You know you can, and you know we want it. So hurry up!
I refuse to buy this unless I am sure that this is the only D.V.D format that it will be released in. I am assuming that I am not the only one.

3 out of 5 stars Great Episodes! But not a perfect DVD........2004-03-20

Call me crazy, but I love all the extras you get the DVD's these days. I love this show and I was so happy when this DVD came out. (House and Garden is one of my fav episodes!) I would gladly recommened this DVD to all B:TAS fans who loved this show, but I'm a little let down by there only being four episodes (I'm antsy for other episodes too) and the fact that there are no extras/special features. I want more!

1 out of 5 stars Why settle for less?.......2005-04-27

Instead of settling for four episodes, including a retread of what's already been released, go for the recently-released volumes. Each volume (as of this writing, two are on the market and the third is being released next month) contains 23 episodes. Every episode, I believe. All in order. You don't miss out. You get every story you remember as a kid (or a younger adult ... you geeks know who you are). More for your money, folks. You won't be disappointed.

2 out of 5 stars Don't waste ur money.......2005-01-18

Buying this would not make sense if you A. Bought Batman The Animated Series: Volume One or B. Batman TAS The Legend Begins. If you have one or the other and hopefully not conned by Warner to buy both and think you would want this then you would have 2 and if ur that rare case of ones who bought BOTH A. and B. then you would have 3 Christmas' with Joker. Now I would urge you to buy Volume One and later 2 then to go question yourself if you have this episode and why is this episode on both DVD's. Be safe and read before you buy.

5 out of 5 stars Batman rules.......2004-03-26

Look...Batman-The Animated Series is, by far, the best interpretation of the Dark Knight outside of the comic books themselves. That's why I rate this DVD 5 stars.
I have good news for all those who complain about the bare bones, 4 episodes per disc DVDs that the WB have been issuing so far.
It turns out that this summer, Warner Bros is finally gonna start releasing Batman- THe animated Series in complete season box sets. With special features galore. Rejoice.

2 out of 5 stars What the Heck?.......2004-03-17

I am really getting miffed. I LOVE this show. It is exactly why I keep buying up these DVDs. I am basically wanting to collect every episode of these great series on DVD.

BUT, the repeat of the episode "Christmas with the Joker" really has me miffed. There are only a limited amount of these episodes on DVD and they are repeating episodes?

I am really frustrated because I want these episodes on DVD, but I truly am wasting my money on these [...] products Warner Bros. is producing. Why is every other television series released in the correct manner?

3 out of 5 stars BE WARNED.......2004-03-14

While I loved this show when it aired, the WB is really screwing things up. This DVD includes four episodes, however, if you bought Batman: The Legend Begins, you'll have bought the same episode twice (Christmas with the Joker)

Here are the episodes:
Christmas with the Joker
The Laughing Fish
Fire from Olympus
Deepr Freeze

Following Val Kilmer's portrayal of the caped crusader in Batman Forever, the fourth Batman feature stars George Clooney under the pointy-eared cowl, with Chris O'Donnell returning as Robin the Boy Wonder. This time the dynamic duo is up against the nefarious Mr. Freeze (Arnold Schwarzenegger), who is bent on turning the world into an iceberg, and the slyly seductive but highly toxic Poison Ivy (Uma Thurman), who wants to eliminate all animal life and turn the Earth into a gigantic greenhouse. Alicia Silverstone lends a hand as Batgirl, and Elle McPherson plays the thankless role of Batman/Bruce Wayne's fiancée. A sensory assault of dazzling colors, senseless action, and lavish sets run amok, this Batman & Robin offers an overdose of eye candy, but it is strictly for devoted Bat-o-philes. --Jeff Shannon

3 out of 5 stars Not so bad........2006-08-21

This movie has possibly the greatest sequence ever captured on film. I am, of course, referring to the Poison Ivy - Gorilla strip scene set to the wild arabian music. I nearly jumped out my seat in the theater!
Sadly, she is the only saving grace in this film, well aside from Chris O'Donnell's body in that suit.

Clooney and Schwarznigger were horrid! Though Arnie's speech impediment is quite hilarious. Especially when he instructing his goons to sing by shouting, "Thing! Thing!" Too funny.

Alicia Silverstone, or 'Chubs' as I like to call her is an absolute bore! Bane was poorly misused as well.

Still, I rate this higher then the nearly unwatchable Batman Forever. However, all the film really cannot beat Batman Returns. That film was absolutely brilliant.
