After the success of Jurassic Park in 1993, the floodgates opened for digital special effects, and Jumanji is nothing if not a showcase for computer-generated creepiness guaranteed to give young children a nightmare or two. Whether that was the filmmakers' intention is up for debate, since this is a PG-rated adventure revolving around a mysterious board game that unleashes a terrifying jungle world upon its players, including gigantic spiders, huge mosquitoes, a stampede of rhinos, elephants, and every other jungle beast you can imagine. Robin Williams plays a man-child who's been trapped in the world of "Jumanji" for 26 years until he's freed by two kids who've discovered the game and released its parade of dangerous horrors. A chaotic and misguided attempt at family entertainment, the movie does offer a few good laughs, and the effects are frequently impressive, if not entirely convincing to the eye. --Jeff Shannon

In the jungle you must wait, untill the dice reads 5 or 8.......2007-04-22
I saw this movie for the first time when I was like 9 or 10. I was so into it. I went out and bought the game right after seeing it. It all starts out with a little boy "Alen" is having a tough time. He is poicked on at school, does not have any friends and his parents want him to go to a school in which he does not want to go. Then one day he goes to a place where there is a company doing construction. He hears drums playing. He finds a game called Jumanji. He runs home and hides it. Then his parents leave to do something and him and a girl start playing. Things start to happen as they do. Bugs start flying around and bats start flying. The game comes alive. Then the boy rools something and the game bord tells him "in the jungle you must wait until the dice reads 5 or 8. He is sucked into the game. The girl gets so affraid that she runs out of the house with bats chasing her. Like 20 years go by and a lady and her sisters 2 kids (I think it was her sister) move in. The kids find the game and start playing. One of them rolls a 5 or 8 and the man is set free. He has aged as the time has gone by. He ends up playing the game with them to finish it. But he needs to get the girl whom played with him all those years ago to play as well because it is her turn. She screams when he arrives to ask her and he tricks her into playing. They all play the game and alot of crazy exciting things happen. I can not tell you what happens because that would ruin it for you. Buy this movie. It is well written. Has good acting from people such as Robin Willams, Kirsten Dunst, and Bradley Pierce. It will make you laugh and suck you in just like the game did Alen.
I love this.......2007-03-10
I like pretty nearly anything Robin Williams is in, but this was great for the whole family - a perfect vehicle for Williams' brand of slapstick humor.
Unique ..........2007-01-29
... is, I think, the best word for this film. As stated in an earlier review, most films are take-offs on dog-earred, thumb-smudged plots and tend only to restate what has been done before. This is especially true of many of today's productions where the film is an out-and-out remake of the earlier film. Often the title is not even changed.
But this story is different. I can't remember any film which has the same idea -- of a boy finding a board game and playing it with his friend only to unleash dire results.
The tale has been recounted in other reviews, so no need for me to restate it. Let's just say that this is a refreshing breath of air in an industry which has become stale in it's repeatition. Visuals are nice, but one can tell they are computer generated.
Older kids and adults will enjoy the story, I think, though I would be cautious about very young children watching. The movie could easily inspire dark dreams for those under age 8 (or so).
The film flows and has a really nice, unexpected twist at the end. Well worth the build up. I think most who watch the movie will like it. And of course it features Robin Williams.

A boy is sucked in to a game, now he and his 3 friends must finish the game. Robin Williams it is one of the greatest!!!!!
This is for all the Family.
Time to revisit this great classic........2006-08-14
Watching Jumanji with kids under the age of 10 will really put this movie into persective for you. I know its Robin Williams and I know its Jumanji, but its good family entertainment, and on that nobody disagrees.
Special effects are a little light by today's standards, but thats really limited to the scenes with the lion and the ubiquitous monkeys, everything else comes off in fairly realistic manner even on a large format digital display. This movie is just great fun, with a terrific twist at the end.
This edition of the DVD has been completely remastered over the original issue, and the quality is in the amazingly clear images and awesome 5.1 audio. A nice "making of" documentary to go along with an FX team commentary and storyboards if you're all that interested in this flick. All in all a high quality release. 5 Skeeters

Too dumb for adults, too scary for kids.......2007-07-29
This movie is too scary for kids...with all kinds of dark scary things manifesting from out of walls and sucking you in...and for adults too dumb. Perhaps the silliest thing is that Robin Williams' character has spent most of his life "in the game" and was living as a knife-wielding jungle-man...and then he decides to play again once he comes back...and what happened...just sits down with two kids, and a woman...that's it. Oh my God, what an idiot. I would get guns (rifles and shotguns), machetes, gear, etc...and when I started playing again I would be so so very much better prepared to deal with all the stuff that comes at you. Little kids might overlook this point and so might others, but you won't now that you've read this..
Don't watch this movie: duh.
You did just see three monkeys go by on a motorcycle; right?.......2007-07-05
This movie was a fresh, original and entertaining show, you never know what will happen next! Great to see an original movie and not another same story/differnet actor spin off that has been the norm. lately.
Throw together a great storyline and actors like Robin Williams, and you get a movie that lived up to all the hype. Due to become a classic.
Hang on tight, you're in for a ride of your life!.......2007-02-20
This came home at the behest of my older son, who saw the trailer on another DVD. I had avoided this movie when it came out, dismissing it as fare for kids (and I had none at the time), However, in the midst of all the mindless stuff the media releases in the guise of 'family entertainment,' this thoughtful yet thrilling movie is the real deal.
When 12 year old Allan Parrish shouts to his father that he "will never speak to him again!" he has no idea that he is about to (literally) get sucked into a board game that will leave him vanished without a trace, his friend Sarah traumatized at having bore witness to his disappearance, and the disintegration of his own family's fortunes as a result.
When Judy and Peter find the board game and unwittingly bring Allan back 26 years later, it's up to Allan to understand the consequences of his actions to put right everything that has gone wrong.
There are a great many teachable moments in this breath-taking movie, and you don't have to look too hard for them, either. My kids thoroughly enjoyed it, and I found myself enjoying it right along with them--a rare treat! Highly recommended.

How can u not like JUMANJI alot of action and fun it almost makes u feel like your playing the game with them
Interactive Excitement.......2006-01-21
I often seem to wonder why movies out there can be just outrageous at times. Nevertheless, I also know that there just aren't that many good movies out there right now which is shallow. That also goes with the same for great actors like Tom Hanks, Billy Crystal, and the legendary Robin Williams. In the 1990's he was just everywhere as one of the funniest performers in comedy, and a fantastic actor to the bone. He was just great in films like Mrs. Doubtfire, The Birdcage, and arguably one of the most outrageous and the most exciting films of the time, Jumanji.
Jumanji with Robin Williams, is about a young boy who feels his life is full of doubts and heartbreak finds a outrageous game, which turns fully interactive. When he comes back in the future, he has no idea of what life leads from the death of his parents, to finding a childhood friend, Sara Wittle played by Helen Hunt. Then, they have to finish the game they started in the years earlier. The movie is absolutely amazing with beautiful graphics from the wicked floods, to the calming lion sleeping in the bed of the house, and even the shocking thrill of the hunt as a British hunter also comes into play with the dice. The effects in the movie are absolutely unique and amazing from each details of the rhinos stampedeing, to the unique mutation of young Peter. The film also remains very unique and fun for all ages.
All in all with the recently released film Zathura in theaters, many may want to still consider that film. However, you may still want to see its competition, Jumanji first. I really loved this film the first time I saw it in the theaters about a decade ago, and if you've enjoyed it you know you have too. If you haven't seen Jumanji yet, you don't know what you're missing with the roll of the dice.

Fond Memories for the Good Old Days.......2007-02-01
In 1989 Disney's THE LITTLE MERMAID initiated a significant renaissance of family films of both the animated and live action variety. There were actually quite a few live action family films produced up through the mid 90s that combined outrageous situations, sentimental plotting and good doses of visual mayhem to entertain most audiences. Some of these films such as HOME ALONE (1990), BEETHOVEN (1992), HOMEWARD BOUND: THE INCREDIBLE JOURNEY (1993) and DENNIS THE MENACE (1993) were the staples of this renaissance. By the mid 90s the appeal of such films seemed to be waning. 1995's JUMANJI seemed to be one of the last of the films to gain recognition and prominence at least to the audiences that went to see it. Many of the noted critics at that time were not exactly enamored with this film.
I sat in the theatre thinking that this was one of the most innovative films to come along for some time. It not only contained those elements that characterized the aforementioned family films but also combined convincing (for that time) digital effects, real drama, danger and concluded with an important message that parents and children should take the time to take note of each other. They should not take each other for granted and not create impenetrable boundaries around themselves. Unfortunately as seen in this film, a boy most grow into manhood before he understands that perhaps his father does not know how to approach him.
JUMANJI is filled with action and many special effects that really are elements of the catharsis that Alan Parrish (Robin Williams) must endure before he can ever possibly go home again. Watching this film again recently I was touched by the scene where Robin Williams visits the old family shoe business to find the factory empty and closed down. It is now a makeshift home for a transient old man who barely remembers the fate of Williams' dad. That scene counterbalanced with the score that James Horner had composed of the earlier New England setting was bittersweet. Watching that scene I also drifted back to the time when this film was first released. They really don't make films like this any more. Those were the good old days. And it's really not that long ago. For a while the studios were making intelligent films for the whole family that weren't afraid to make you feel for the characters as well as laugh with them. I have fond memories of JUMANJI.

Jumanji's good---Zathura's better.......2007-03-30
I have seen both of these movies. Jumanji is pretty good but the special effects are pretty hokey.(Which is good for unintended laughs, but not if you want true escapist entertainment)Zathura is really belivable, however, and that's a really big deal for a sci-fi. They used old-school effects like explosives and models whenever they got the chance, instead of everything being CGI.I would recommend Zathura---and maybe Jumanji.
Fantasy .......2006-11-04
These videos were as advertised and arrived promptly. Movies are great to stimulate the imagination of the young.
The Perfect Pair.......2006-07-26
This is a great Box Set for action lovers. Zathuru and Jumanji are very like each other except Jumanji is 11 years old and is an Animal Version while Zathuru hasn't even been out a year yet and is a space version. But they each feature a Board Game where everything that the card/hole says comes to life.
Zathura (2005) is about these 2 boys who are fighting alot. One of the boys finds a board game called Zathura and accidently starts it up. Soon their house is flung into space. As the boys play the game everything on the cards that pop out comes to life, Which lead to a Giant Robot, Evil Mutant Lizards and a visit from a mysterious man from the Future.
Jumanji (1995) starts off way in the 1800s where these two boys are burying this game called Jumanji. In the 1969 a young boy called Alan finds the game and starts playing it with his friend Sarah. Words start appearing in a black hole in the middle of the board. Whatever it says comes to life which also traps Alan in the Jungle. 26 years later in 1995, a young girl called Judy and her younger brother called Peter also find the game and start playing with it which frees trapped Alan many strange things. Together, along with Sarah, have to finish the game and set everything right.
Their brilliant Movies and are a perfect box set. You wont be dissappointed.
Zathura / Jumanji.......2006-06-24
If you are a fan of Jumanji and can't get enough of it like me, then this package is great for you. When I saw the ( b2b ) which stands for (Back to Back), I was kind of worried about what I would be getting. Then in the discription I saw 2 discs and felt a little better. The pacakge is great, you actually get 2 seperate DVDs. [ Zathura :Special Edition & Jumani: Collector's edition ] each one in its own case and everything. The movie quality is great, and they both have a similar feature. When you go into the menu they have broken down the 'Makeing of' (in both movies) into parts, so instead of cramming everything into just one looong segemtent..you have different segements, one about the effects, one about the creators and so forth. And in Zathura, there is actually a whole segment with/about the Author, who is also the Author of Jumanji & The Polar Express.
I was VERY pleased with this package, the movies are great, and watching the 'making of' is just as intresting as the actual movies.
I highly recomend it. A wanderful treat for the whole family, just becareful if you have little kids, because the monsters do have a realistic look. But other than that, its a great deal.

5 Skeeters
