Product Description
A member of a rich British aristocratic family, Lara Croft is a "tomb raider" who enjoys collecting ancient artifacts from ruins of temples, cities, etc. worldwide, and doesn't mind going through death-defying dangers to get them. She is skilled in hand-to-hand combat, weapons training, and foreign languages - and does them all in tight outfits. Well, the planets of the solar system are going into planetary alignment (Which occurs every 5,000 years), and a secret society called the Illuminati is seeking an ancient talisman that gives its possessor the ability to control time. However, they need a certain clock/key to help them in their search, and they have to find the talisman in one week or wait until the next planetary alignment to find it again. Lara happens to find that key hidden in a wall of her mansion. The Illuminati steal it, and Lara gets an old letter from her deceased father telling her about the society's agenda (Her father was also the one who hid the key). Now, she must retrieve the key and find and destroy the talisman before the Illuminati can get their hands on it.

Lara Croft - Tomb Raider [Blu-ray].......2007-07-17
The Blu-ray is disappointed. The sound is 1.5 Mbps instead of 4.6 Mbps because of the bonus in it. The picture isn't so perfect as I expected because there's less color than other movies in Blu-ray and the definition is no so good. However, le main menu is great and the trailers in HD !!
On the blu-ray release.......2007-04-26
When the Lara Croft video game was released it was so ahead of its time, it influenced and changed the video game industry.
It would have been nice if the Lara Croft series could continue its revelutionary approach by producing a crystal clear version of this 7 year old movie. But seeing the way how they prepared the title for HD, its apparent that the producers dont have big expectancies from this old lady.
The movie is very much grainy, there are even scratches and glares. I am not impressed with the audio as well.
The HD version has absolutely Zero upgrade value.
There are many extras but as i dont have the DVD im not sure if they are special for this version or not.
disappointing blu-ray release.......2007-03-23
this is my 10th blu-ray movie, and it is one of the worst one I have seen, there is grain everywhere and colors are so saturated it made the picture look flat and plain. Definitely not for showing off your HD equipment.
Lara Croft - We need more.......2007-03-09
Great female action movie. We need more like this. It holds your interest.
Lara never looked better.......2007-01-30
When i played this for the first time on my blu-ray player i was instantly able to see the difference in quality. The image was crisp and felt as though i was seeing it back in the theaters again.

Like the video game series it's based on, Tomb Raider is best enjoyed for its physical strategies, since even casual scrutiny of story details will induce a headache. It's more concerned with puzzles than plot, populated with characters that don't have personalities so much as attitudes. It's silly and somber at the same time, but as a franchise vehicle for Angelina Jolie in the title role of relic hunter Lara Croft, this is packaged entertainment at its most agreeable, ambitious in scope and scale, and filled with the kind of globetrotting adventure that could make Jolie the best thing that's happened to action movies since Indiana Jones. Could being the operative word here, because Tomb Raider can't match any of Steven Spielberg's celebrated joyrides, but the ingredients are there for an exquisitely cinematic meal.
Perhaps to distance himself from Lara Croft's video game origins, director Simon West takes things a bit too seriously; Tomb Raider handles its plot (involving a planetary alignment, the nefarious Illuminati, and coveted relics that hold the key to controlling the flow of time) with all the gravity of a championship chess match... minus the tension. If the movie had lightened up and been truly suspenseful (instead of being suffused with been-there, done-that familiarity), it would have been an instant popcorn classic. As it is, however, this is an elegantly mounted adventure featuring exotic locations (in Cambodia and Iceland) and an exotic star born for her role. Even without her padded bra, Jolie would be the living embodiment of Lara Croft, and that's enough to bode well for inevitable sequels. --Jeff Shannon
Customer Reviews:
an action film that works.......2007-07-23
While I'm certainly not a fan of the Tomb Raider video games (because they're horribly designed and endlessly frustrating) I couldn't believe my sees at the sight of a really good Tomb Raider action movie. Sure, some of the lines were pretty silly and cheesy, and the action scenes were pretty predictable because you KNEW Lara would always escape danger is highly unbelievable ways. It doesn't matter though, because I was thoroughly impressed with the quality of this film. Good watch.
Tomb Raider - HD.......2007-05-10
Video transfer quality is great. Dolby Digital Plus 5.1 soundtrack is very clean - I haven't listened to the DTS soundtrack, but it includes one. Special features are PLENTY, among which are both a trailer and a teaser trailer in HD.
If you enjoy this movie, I would say you get a great value for the money with the quality and all the features. If you've never seen this movie before, and you feel the same way as I do about some of the other movies I've reviewed here on Amazon, then you may feel the same way as I do about "Tomb Raider" as well.
My first impression - having all the bells and whistles of a great surround system - leads me to conclude that it's plenty "Tomb" but not quite "Raider".
The story is decent as far as "adventures" go, perhaps more on the unconvincing side, but the action seemed small to me: gunfire petite...explosions dainty...somewhat corny...Lara evades a gunman's barrage of bullets in the main lobby of her mansion like a schoolyard tetherball going around its pole, and I couldn't help but be reminded of writings I remember from the U.S.S. Alabama - "Lead Dammit, Lead!"
"Tomb Raider" may be more of (but not necessarily) a "chick flic" adventure (pardon the reference) strongly cashing in on the "daddy's little girl" theme, which could easily alienate some. However, do not assume me biased about a female lead: I found "Aeon Flux" to be an outstanding film - it too has a female lead.
It turns out I honestly just didn't like this movie. If you're a fan of the "Tomb Raider" videogame, or of Angelina Jolie, or of archeological adventures or of the aforementioned thematic structure, you might get a kick out of this film. If you're particular about your collection, you may want to be cautious about this one - but in its defense, it's all a matter of taste.
I neither recommend nor condemn this film - I just didn't like it.
A collector's Must Have.......2007-05-07
Jolie as an action figure just sits right. I am glad I have it to watch whenever.
Lara Croft - Tomb Raider.......2007-05-07
Love it came in great condition!and it shows GREAT!!
Visually stunning!.......2007-04-09
And the sets and scenery are nice too. Face it, the reason we're here to talk about this movie, is because of the star. It's all about Angelina Jolie, but unfortunately this film is rated PG-13, so you just don't get as much of her as you would like.
The main character, Lara Croft (Jolie) is the uber-sexy combination of the all the archeological nerdiness of Indiana Jones, the swashbuckling adventure of Robin Hood, the firepower of Rambo, the gadgetry of James Bond and the sexiness of, well, Angelina Jolie. Her humble abode, Croft Manor is meant to evoke some sort of combination of classic European aristocracy and 22nd Century technical marvel. Some weird combination of Palace of Versailles crossed with the Bat Cave and the deck of the Starship Enterprise. Why can't we all be born into this lifestyle? In fact I guess it really is a lot like Bruce Wayne's place.
The opening scene is a fantastic fight sequence between a barely clad Croft and some robot thingy we don't care about. It nearly kills her, but she comes through and destroys it and we all learn it's just some cheese ball training session, and a good excuse for her to wear a nice tight top and some revealing shorts. This is followed by a completely meaningless scene that serves no purpose what so ever , Croft in a shower. If they would have been brave enough to shoot for an R rating, or even an NC-17, it could have been the greatest scene in the history of filmmaking. As it is, just a naked wet Jolie throwing her hair about and posing as the water falls on her body. It really is quite magnificent, and yet somewhat disappointing.
The story revolves around some global organization bent on taking over the world, and their plans revolve around the planets aligning and some magic key they need to find to control time. Along the way we learn that Croft has daddy issues (Jon Voight, her real life father) since he's been missing for so long. And she is the uber-cool totally against the grain rebel that upsets any and all uptight class elitists she runs into along the way, even though she`s a rich snob herself. She has a geeky brainiac side kick/helper named Bryce (Noah Talyor) who is pretty funny actually, a nice little smart alec, and an opposing archeologist working for the bad guys named Alex (Craig, Daniel Craig).
The movie looks pretty, which is its main goal. There is some sort of story, plenty of action, a bit of intrigue and the constant presence and pleasure of Croft's breasts, which appear to be the main feature of this story, since the camera rarely leaves them and her outfits always ensure their prominent display. Also, there are enough references to the Illuminati (the bad guys here, bent on world domination, and definitely not wiling to wait another 5000 years for the planetary alignment before they can take over) and the all seeing eye on the pyramid to make a Da Vinci code buff have some sort of nerd-gasm trying to compare/contrast how those two symbols are used in the different films.
The movie is really just a whacky wild adventure in the pursuit of two halves of a magic mystery triangle so powerful that the evil Mecha-Streisand can be destroyed once and for all! Ok, that's not really what the triangle does, it gives the user the ability to manipulate time, which the bad guys will use to take over the world. As if they're not already in control of everything. Of course Lara prevents them from getting the triangle, actually gets control of it herself and does nothing spectacular with it before destroying it.
The parallels between Tomb Raider and Raiders of the Lost Ark are almost uncanny. A swashbuckling hero Croft/Indy is out to save the world by finding the triangle/ark before the bad guys Illuminati/Nazis are able to do so with their own archeologist Alex West/Renee Belloq.
With that, it's a visually stunning film, with the scenery and locals, the special effects, and of course the lead actress. It's entertaining, and worth the money. Pick it up. Enjoy it. You won't remember anything about it a week after seeing it. It's a good fun movie, that is completely forgettable.

Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, The Cradle of Life is certainly better than its 2001 predecessor, but its appeal is mostly aimed at fans of the video games that inspired both movies. That pretty much leaves you with some fun but familiar action sequences, and the ever-alluring sight of Angelina Jolie (reprising her title role) as she swims, swings, kicks, shoots, flies, jet-skis, motorcycles, and free-falls her way toward saving the world, this time by making sure that a grimacing villain (Ciarán Hinds) doesn't open Pandora's Box (yes, the actual mythological object) and unleash a deadly plague that will "weed out" the global population. Exotic locations add to Jolie's own coolly erotic appeal, but we're left wondering if this franchise has anywhere else to go. --Jeff Shannon

One of Jolie's best.......2007-05-07
Loved this film when it first came out and still like to keep in my collection.
Good movie.......2007-05-07
I really like this movie, even more that the first one. It has a lot of action. And the DVD features are pretty good.
Action galore with some hot romance along the way.......2007-04-06
Croft is out for adventure and action again and Jolie fills the bill
very well. The stunts and special effects are good especially the flight
off the tallest building in HongKong. This time Lara has company in a
virile and sexy scottish actor named Gerard Butler. He gives her plenty
of competition in their action shots and some very sultry scenes in the
romance department. I thought the ending was a cope out and thought the
alternate ending made more sense.
For Lara-fans.......2007-01-28
This may not be intellectually challenging, but features enough exotic scenery and special effects to hold the viewer's attention for at least a couple of viewings.
Great entertainment for kids, while the dads will enjoy the sight of Angelina Jolie in her bikini. Features less action than the first Lara Croft movie, but makes up for this with clever effects, and by switching between numerous spectacular locations.
Jolie may not be the world's greatest actress, but continues to be the ideal choice for what is essentially a female Indiana Jones. If you enjoyed the first, then this is a must-see.
Lara Croft Tomb Raider- The Cradle of Life.......2007-01-09
I'm not a big fan of Angelina Jolie, but I do like this movie. Of course Gerard Butler is wonderful to watch in this movie and they work well together.

Product Description
Winner of 4 awards, this entertaining documentary tells the dramatic story behind the making of the epic movie Beowulf & Grendel, starring Gerard Butler, Stellan Skarsgard, Sarah Polley and Ingvar Sigurdsson. When Canadian director Sturla Gunnarsson and his cast and crew, including Gerard Butler and Stellan Skarsgård, set upon Iceland to film Beowulf & Grendel in 2004, they expected the usual complications involved in making a major motion picture.
What they encountered was a ruthless Icelandic winter on a foreboding landscape, financing complications and a bizarre run of bad luck that led some of them to believe they were in an epic battle with the Norse gods themselves. Filmmaker Jon Gustafsson was along for the ride. Hired to play one of Beowulfs warriors, hes one set with his camera as the crew battles hurricane force winds and hes in the backroom as the producers scramble to shore up a collapsing deal, creating an intimate portrait of filmmakers fighting the odds in pursuit of a vision.

The Burden of Sturla's Dream!.......2007-08-24
Many MANY years ago, being a dedicated Werner Herzog fan, I went to see the documentary, "Burden of Dreams" which was based on the many trials and tribulations of filming his incredible movie, "Fitzcarraldo" in the jungles of Peru. "Wrath of Gods" could be its Icelandic cousin. There seem to be certain films that fight against their creators. Their directors, crew, and cast must give all they have, and sometimes even a bit more, in order to see their dream realized. Indeed, there are moments during WOGs when the forced smile on director Sturla Gunnarsson's face melts into something sad and desperate; those are among the most beautiful moments in this film, because that sadness and desperation added to the haunting (and I mean that in the most lovely and primal way) beauty of what became "Beowulf & Grendel". There is no happy, storybook ending here; the film did poorly by Hollywood standards, but so what?! The film is ultimately true to the prose, true to the raging, frozen, breathtaking Icelandic landscape where it was filmed, and true to the tale of its anti-hero, Beowulf. It is almost an anti-Hollywood movie, and sometimes, who could ask for more than that? Thank you to the director of "Beowulf & Grendel", Sturla Gunnarsson, to Jon Gustafsson, who filmed its filming, and to the extraordinary cast. Absolutely loved this movie. It has SOUL.
A Feast For your senses - A Must have - Must See.......2007-08-23
Finally the world has the light switch turned on and Wrath is lighting the world on fire.
Got My Wrath DVD ---WOW just does not cover it
I came home to Wrath in my mailbox and I just finished watching it ----WOW!!! Awesome just does not begin to be the tip of the iceberg. Simply a masterpiece. Bravo Jon.
I loved the interview with Gerard, it is so raw and candid and shows alot of soul and gives us an inner glimpse of the many sides of Gerry. I like the part when he mentions how much Iceland means to him and how it has left such an impression on him, just like his homeland Scotland. For Gerry to make the interview while he had a raging headache says lot about him and his passion for Beowulf and Wrath.
Wrath is a must for everyone and you (Jon) must be so proud of your film because it is truly a work of art. It brought it all back for me when I was in Toronto for the World Premiere Of Beowulf and on the Red Carpet.
You go through so many different emotions in this film it is really a roller coaster ride that you hope will never end. It really gives the art of making movies a human touch and gives us all a bird's eye view of what can happen and what can go wrong. it is truly refreshing to get out of the "Hollywood" Mold and step into the real world. Just when you thought things could not get worse, they do and you wonder how everyone made it through filming alive.
So many extras that will leave you breathless and leave you in awe. I cannot believe the amount of extras included, it is amazing!!!
I am so happy Wrath is available in ALL REGIONS. It will become an instant treasure for you to watch again and again, except this treasure is not buried.
Bravo Jon!!!!
I know many more awards are ahead for you and Wrath, you so deserve it.

Exciting and helpful to understanding film........2007-08-22
Ihave always loved the story of beowulf. I was excited to see the movie when it came out, but by the end I was more interested in finding how they ever made the film. The documentary is wonderful. It lays out the reality of making movies and also about following your vision against great odds. The landscape, business, and unexpected pitfalls do not seem to sway people who are passionate about their art. I am so happy this film was made.
Fabulous Documentary.......2007-08-22
I was interested in BEOWULF AND GRENDEL for several reasons, first I'm a big Gerard Butler fan, second, I wanted to see how an updated film of the ancient epic poem would turn out and finally, I had been to Iceland and I wanted to see how it looked on film. Naturally, this documentary caught my eye and it did not disappoint. It was very interesting in just following the basic film making process. As a viewer, you are up close and personal with all the people working on the film, not just the cast and director. There was, of course, nothing basic in the making of this film. The weather was incredible, the backdrop of the Icelandic wilderness was breathtaking and the monumental difficulties that the filmmakers had to overcome was awesome. Though the weather and Mother Nature were by far the most dramatic problems, there were financial and business snafus to deal with as well. This documentary had a dramatic intensity of its own quite apart from the drama portrayed in the film. I unhesitatingly recommend this DVD to anyone who is interested in the process of filmmaking, as well as the beautiful landscape of the Icelandic coast and mountains.

Description
Exploring lost empires, finding priceless treasures, punishing villains in mortal combat...it's all in a day's work for adventurer Lara Croft (Angelina Jolie). But a secret from her father's (Jon Voight) past is about to lead Lara to her greatest challenge: The Triangle of Light, a legendary artifact with the power to alter space and time. Lara must find the Triangle before it falls into the clutches of the Illuminati, a secret society bent on world domination. Laura Croft.......2007-06-12
I am really hoping that this becomes, at least a Trilogy or more!
Crost Better without Jolie! .......2006-02-06
I know nothing about the video games related to this movie, so I am viewing it strictly as a movie fan - and a fan of Gerry Butler. What a dissappointment Angelina Jolie was! Where were the director and the screenwriter on this one? They sure missed the mark with the potential chemistry between these two people! It is hard to believe they ever could have been in love at one time, let alone that someone who comes across as passionate on the screen as Gerry Butler did, could EVER have loved a character as wooden and stiff as Jolie's potrayal of Croft. What a shame. I think they were so interested in making this a vehilce for the marginally talented Jolie, that they forget all about the entertainment factor! Special effect and stunts aren't all people want to see in a movie. To sacrifice such natual, potential chemistry in favor of making a video game movie, completely stuns me. Jolie's acting is in a word - terrible. If you want to see a good performance, buy the two-disc set and view Gerry Butler's screen test in the special features section. I think some of the dialogue was his ad lib (which was better than the dialogue in the movie!) and that scene is steamy and gets to the heart of the subplot that was the obvious motive for Terry Sheridan tagging along in the first place - and that's all they let him do - tag along! Croft states she needs Terry Sheridan and then proceeds to treat him like a bad child. What a shame! It would have been a much better flick if they would have let the two actors and characters play off of each other more and let Gerry Butler do what he does better than just about any male actor his age out there - act. The three stars are for his performance, by the way. Angelina Jolie was great in Gia years ago. What has happened to her?
Fun Popcorn Flick.......2005-02-21
This is a fun popcorn flick with lots of action and exotic locations, that moves at a nice clip, but nothing to be taken too seriously.
A Joy.......2003-12-28
I have a large DVD collection and these two movies are the ones that are the most watched. I love these movies because they are pure fun adventure that takes place all over the world and in these wonderful environments that have never been seen before on film. Angelina Jolie is the best female action hero when she is Lara Croft. The character suits her perfectly. Tomb Raider 1 and 2 are nothing but FUN! I love them!

--Jeff Shannon

an action film that works.......2007-07-23

It's all hype.......2007-06-04
Looking over her body of work confirms to me that I have never actually enjoyed any of Angelina Jolie's movies and some of her movies aren't even real movies but visual showcases. She's watchable and talented but she doesn't seem to get good movie roles. Maybe she looks too lush but many of her roles involve her looking like the archetypal beautiful vampiress. When she dyes her hair white or changes her accent, I tend to lose attention. I like the actress but there's been nothing I like with her in it. Gia showcased her ability to intimidate but perhaps like Elizabeth Taylor, this actress's career and fame exists despite the paucity of her roles even in old favorites with Montgomery Clift. Remember Butterfield 8?

Lara should still take some Lessons in Humility.......2007-02-02
Lighten up Lara. There is such a pile of macho manure in this film that you need a snorkel.
Arrogance runs so rampant across the screen that you can't tell the good guys from the bad in this movie. I remember when heroes had a little humility. That's what gave them staying power. Look at the likeable Indiana Jones that Harrison Ford created. Even look at the characters in the MUMMY. In that film even the villain had his moment of pathos and he even got to come back in the sequel! I'll tell you, that mummy was no dummy. Lara, you are out of your league. It was great to see Richard Johnson on the big screen once again on this film's theatrical release. That's why I gave it 2 stars instead of 1. Thanks Richard.
