Let's see--he's been Han Solo in three films and Indiana Jones in three more. So why shouldn't Harrison Ford take on a new continuing character in Tom Clancy's CIA analyst Jack Ryan? In this film, directed by Phillip Noyce, Ford picked up the baton when Alec Baldwin, who played Ryan in The Hunt for Red October, opted for a Broadway role instead. In this film, Ryan and his family are on vacation when Ryan saves a member of the British royal family from attack by Irish terrorists. The next thing he knows, the Ryan clan has been targeted by the same terrorists, who invade his Maryland home. The film can't shed all of Clancy's lumbering prose, or his techno-dweeb fascination with spy satellites and the like. But no one is better than Ford at righteous heroism--and Sean Bean makes a suitably snakey villain. --Marshall Fine

Description

Harrison Ford stars as Jack Ryan in PATRIOT GAMES, an explosive thriller based on Tom Clancy's international best-seller. His days as an intelligence agent behind him, former CIA analyst Jack Ryan has traveled to London to vacation with his wife (Archer) and child (Birch). Meeting his family outside of Buckingham Palace, Ryan is caught in the middle of a terrorist attack on Lord Holmes (Fox), a member of the Royal Family. Ryan helps to thwart Holmes' assailants and becomes a local hero. But Ryan's courageous act marks him as a target in the sights of the terrorist (Bean) whose brother he killed. Now Ryan must return to action for the most vital assignment of his life -- to save his family.

4 out of 5 stars Great Adaptation of Clancy Bestseller.......2007-04-13

Patriot Games was the second in a series of adaptations of Tom Clancy's bestselling novels featuring heroic CIA analyst Jack Ryan. However, Alec Baldwin, who played Ryan in "The Hunt For Red October," ended up not appearing in this film. But no worries. Ryan is played by stalwart leading man Harrison Ford, who plays Ryan to a tee, as a brave, cerebral man of action.

Ryan is on vacation in England when he interferes with an IRA assassination attempt on a member of the British royal family. He kills one of the terrorists, and his brother, played by Sean Bean, vows revenge. Now, Ryan and his family are threatened by a rogue group of Provos, having to rely on their own wits, and the protection of fellow intelligence officer Samuel L. Jackson, to survive.

This is a crackling good thriller with a great script and taut direction by Phillip Noyce. Ford would go on to play Ryan again in "Clear and Present Danger." This is an excellent adaptation of a popular novel, which doesn't happen very often.

2 out of 5 stars Tepid Formalism that could've been great.......2007-01-01

"Patriot Games" is a film that could strive to do something important with the thriller genre, but instead ends up being an obvious, humdrum, and stale thriller film that deflates most of its sentiment. The film, based on the Tom Clancy novel of the same name, features that good `ole Jack Ryan character, in a fight for his family and his own survival against renegade members of the IRA, led by the underused Sean Bean; and what could have been a timely, think piece statement on this conflict, ends up being a rather tepid suspense film, that keeps most of its oomph! for the end, in an instrumental, but mostly satisfying action-oriented conclusion.

Harrison Ford only half tries in the film-- playing the central character that kills the Bean's brother in his botched assination attempt of a member of the British royalty--giving his tough-as-nails, but compassionate character a sort of narrowness that is oddly buoyed by his sense of restraint, and never letting his performance go over the top, but rather keeping his cool-and-calm collective all the way through the film: basically he is a man's man, a guy who can kick arse like Rambo, be James Bondish smooth, yet Sherlock Homes smart. The character is a collection of these traits, and Ford, who usually seems to play this typecast role of "Hero" with a pretty boy attitude, can get away with a performing like he just awoke from a nap, and that's why Ford is oddly appealing as an actor.

The rest of the cast is good, with big-name actors like Samuel L. Jackson, and James Earl Jones, yet aren't given much to work with, especially in the case of Bean, who seems like he has to mumble his lines, stare off into space with an angry look, or just grimace. Special notice, however, goes to the sweety Thora Birch, who would later show up in such films as American Beauty; Birch gives her child character a charm and sincerity with her playful smile and cutesy look, and even if her character has far and few lines, its novel having her in this film in the "before they were stars" sort of way.

Patriot Games is polished like a big budget blockbuster: the photography is sharp, as well, and the camera captures some great picturesque moments of the scenery, especially in the nighttime scenes. There's also some moments of directorial style here, as the camera seems to maturely know when to show or tell in the violent scenes; such as in one when the camera recoils back outside the house after one henchmen gets shoot through a door, while the other two IRA members fight it out with another; in this scene all the viewer sees and hears is a few gunshots going off inside the house. Though it is admittedly an usual scene in action films, it is effective in its minimalism.

Yet despite its pricey look, and some decent enough performances, Patriot Games is seriously lacking in most other departments. The story is rather meek, for one, is rather haphazardly put together, and lacks sentiment. Typical action clichés pop up: the not-working mobile phone, during which the hero tries to save the day; the black-and-white, good and bad characters, and unprofessional side characters who are always meant to die or just be dumb, while the hero wades through the pool of lies and deceit to find the "bad" character posing as a protagonist; these, and other awkward steps make Patriot Games a typical, and jivey film.

Though Patriot Games could have been excellent, had it been given an injection of life. There is some suspense but not much, and you know how it will turn out for the characters; there's just not much here to warrant a good time, aside from some cheap thrills. That's too bad too, because the film could of went into better characterizations with its themes of the conflict in Ireland. Bean's character and the rest of the main-supporting antagonists could have been given a voice, feeling, and depth, as it is often the villains that are more interesting than the hero, since their diabolical motivations are more resonant in the audience's mind.

Patriot Games is an under whelming venture into action-thrillers. Despite some decent enough scenes in the final act, and another good nail-biting freeway chase, there is nothing to warrant something more than a relaxing watch, as it is certainly not an absorbing one. If you like your plots simplistic, and full of clichés, I recommend this film. Yet, if not, and if you can let your mind relax, it will still be nothing more than average.

5 out of 5 stars Patriot Games (Special Edition).......2006-08-30

A really great movie with a superior cast. If you like Tom Clancy inspired movies, this is a must have!

3 out of 5 stars Just asking...........2006-08-07

I know it's only a Hollywood movie. And the book it's based upon is fiction and hardly Tolstoy at that.

But I can't help wondering if it's plausible that even a militaristic Republican would so eagerly accept a title from the British Royal family. After all, these would be direct descendants of people who probably ran Ryan's own ancestors out of their homeland!

Also, the incredibly irritating pub scene portrays Irish-Americans (yet again) as dim-witted, belligerent drunks who simply adore imbecilic sing-alongs about "Irish laddies."

Understood that the villains are supposed to be psychos and very hissable they are, too. But couldn't the writers have avoided perpetuating so many narrow and simplistic cliches?

5 out of 5 stars The Power of Observation & Juxtaposition...obviously requisite character traits of a CIA analyst.......2006-07-24

I have never read any of Tom Clancy's works, but I have seen all the movies made from them. Patriot Games is one of them.

The storyline is quite simple: Jack Ryan (Harrison Ford), former CIA analyst, is on vacation/lecture tour in England with his family. While on the way to meet them near Buckingham Palace, he & his family are caught in a cross-fire during an assassination attempt on a member of the Royal Family, Lord Holmes (Edward Fox), by a rogue faction of the IRA led by Sean Miller (Sean Bean). In the ensuing shoot-out, Jack killed one the terrorists, who happens to be Sean's younger brother. Jack gets drawn back into the CIA after the terrorists set out a vengeful attack against his family back in USA.

In my view, the action sequences in this movie are not very exciting, when compared with any of the recent Bond &/or Bourne movies, although the entire movie is quite entertaining. I particularly enjoyed the sequence showing a real-time satellite-tracking session at CIA HQ, during which Jack & his counter-terrorism team are watching a crack SAS team conducting a black ops raid at the terrorists' hideout somewhere in Libya. The accompanying music score is realistically haunting!

What excites me most about this movie is watching Jack exercising his astute power of observation & his uncanny ability to juxtapose images in a relentless attempt to track down the whereabout of the rogue faction of the IRA,...with the high-tech resources of CIA's counter-terrorism group, of course.

Using vital information secured from Paddy O'Neil (Richard Harris), an IRA supporter in the USA, Jack narrows down the search through his observation/juxtaposition of CIA's satellite images (which includes an overhead snapshot of an apparently capped woman with a pony tail) with his own recalled images:

- a back-view glimpse of the pony-tailed driver in the terrorists' getaway vehicle during the foiled assassination attempt in England;
- a side-view glance of the pony-tailed driver in the terrorists' getaway vehicle during an unsuccessful assassination attempt on his life outside the US Naval Academy;

All these associations have been triggered while taking a break & walking pass a pony-tailed woman employee on the way to answer the call of nature at CIA Headquarters.

What a brilliant piece of detective work - observation plus juxtaposition - on the part of Jack!

The Power of Observation & Juxtaposition are obviously requisite character traits of a CIA analyst.

In summing up this review, I have enjoyed very much watching Patriot Games, experientially as well as educationally. This is another wonderful addition to my resource repertoire.

I really enjoyed watching the Jack Ryan movies in this collection while I could. Now when I place them in my DVD player I get a message like "Title 8 Prohibited from Playing at the present time". I believe my DVD laser lens may be dirty and I'll try cleaning it today. I sure hope I get to watch these movies again some day soon.

5 out of 5 stars The complete deal with extras.......2007-06-13

If you are a fan of the the Jack Ryan series then this is the set to get starting with the one that started the franchise to the climatic prequel that to this point concludes the series. The price is right too conidering what trilogy and movie sets go for these days, and you don't feel empty handed due to the fact that each film is a special edition so if you are a movie freak and enjoy all of the behind the scenes stuff then you get to enjoy all of that as well. Overall it's the best choice for the price in looking for the films featuring Jack Ryan.

The Hunt for Red October
Before Harrison Ford assumed the mantle of playing Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan hero in Patriot Games, Alec Baldwin took a swing at the character in this John McTiernan film and hit one to the fence. If less instantly sympathetic than Ford, Baldwin is in some respects more interesting and nuanced as Ryan, and drawing comparisons between both actors' performances can make for some interesting postmovie discussion. That aside, The Hunt for Red October stands alone as a uniquely exciting adventure with a fantastic costar: Sean Connery as a Russian nuclear submarine captain attempting to defect to the West on his ship. Ryan must figure out his true motives for approaching the U.S. McTiernan (Predator, Die Hard) made an exceptionally handsome movie here with action sequences that really do take one's breath away. --Tom Keogh

Patriot Games
Let's see--he's been Han Solo in three films and Indiana Jones in three more. So why shouldn't Harrison Ford take on a new continuing character in Tom Clancy's CIA analyst Jack Ryan? In this film, directed by Phillip Noyce, Ford picked up the baton when Alec Baldwin, who played Ryan in The Hunt for Red October, opted for a Broadway role instead. The film can't shed all of Clancy's lumbering prose, or his techno-dweeb fascination with spy satellites and the like. But no one is better than Ford at righteous heroism--and Sean Bean makes a suitably snakey villain. --Marshall Fine

Clear and Present Danger
The third installment in the cinematic incarnation of Tom Clancy's CIA analyst Jack Ryan and the second starring Harrison Ford, this follow-up to Patriot Games is a more complex, rewarding, and bolder film than its predecessor. Ford returns as Ryan, this time embroiled in a failed White House bid to wipe out a Colombian drug cartel and cover up the mess. The script, by Clancy and John Milius (Red Dawn), has an air of true adventure about it as Ryan places himself in harm's way to extract covert soldiers abandoned in a Latin American jungle. There are a couple of remarkable set pieces expertly handled by Patriot Games director Phillip Noyce, especially a shocking scene involving an ambush on Ryan's car in an alley. The supporting cast is superb, including Willem Dafoe as the soldiers' leader, Henry Czerny as Ryan's enemy at the CIA, Joaquim de Almeida as a smooth-talking villain, Ann Magnuson as an unwitting confederate in international crime, and James Earl Jones as Ryan's dying boss. The DVD release has a widescreen presentation, theatrical trailer, closed captioning, optional French soundtrack, and optional Spanish subtitles. --Tom Keogh

    Description

With three Super Bowl wins in four years (2001-2004)-a feat equaled only by the Dallas Cowboys-the New England Patriots have established themselves as the first NFL dynasty of the 21st Century. In Week 2 of the 2001 season, Patriots quarterback Drew Bledsoe took a vicious blow from Jets linebacker Mo Lewis, and the 2001 season seemed lost. But backup Tom Brady stepped in-and New England sports history was changed forever. By the time Bledsoe returned, Brady had compiled a 5-3 record as a starter, and head coach Bill Belichick stayed with him. That decision paid off in the final minutes of Super Bowl XXXVI, when Brady drove the Patriots 53 yards to set up the biggest kick of Adam Vinatieri's career - a 48-yarder for the title. Less than a week before the start of the 2003 season, Belichick made another risky decision, releasing Pro Bowl safety and team captain Lawyer Milloy. His replacement, Rodney Harrison, won respect with his aggressive play and was voted a defensive captain after only a few games. Harrison and linebackers Tedy Bruschi and Willie McGinest led a defense that allowed the fewest points in the league that season. In Super Bowl XXXVIII, Tom Brady out-gunned the Carolina Panthers, 32-29, and won his second Super Bowl MVP award in three years. Halloween, 2004, was a nightmare for New England: Ben Roethlisberger's Steelers ended the Patriots' NFL-record 21-game winning streak and dealt a season-ending injury to All-Pro cornerback Ty Law. More injuries followed as the season progressed, weakening a once-dominant defense-but New England played on with a patchwork secondary that included 33-year-old wide receiver Troy Brown at nickel back. After the Patriots won the rematch against Big Ben for the AFC Championship, all that stood between them and a third world title in four seasons was the most fearsome receiver in the game-Philadelphia's Terrell Owens, in Super Bowl XXXIX.

No one expected great things for the 2001 New England Patriots, and their upstart reputation persisted until the final seconds of Super Bowl XXXVI, when a winning field goal at long last established them as football's best. This rousing NFL Films production follows their entire season, beginning with a horrendous 1-3 record and the loss of quarterback Drew Bledsoe before they kept finding ways to win in a season that couldn't help but be emotional. Playing when America was attacked and went to war held a special meaning for the Patriots, who at one game paid tribute to teammate Joe Andruzzi's three brothers who work as New York City firefighters. The Patriots' postseason victories, including a memorable overtime upset in a snowstorm against the fearsome Raiders, are dramatically depicted. And 17 minutes of highlights from the Super Bowl game against the heavily favored St. Louis Rams are presented with all the devotion that only NFL Films can bring. --Robert J. McNamara

1 out of 5 stars an amazing moment of history, sadly not remembered very well on this DVD.......2007-03-21

As a long suffering Pats fan since birth, we had seen all the misery of losing, losing, losing and finally getting to 2 superbowls and hey.....losing! That all changed in New Orleans 2001 and what a feeling that was. WE FINALLY WIN !!!! sadly this incredible moment of glory and joy is not commemorated very well on this DVD. It's far too short for starters and there isn't full coverage of the superbowl. why?! I know it was a dull game but we still won our first superbowl ever. Why not the full game play by play? I also found the music pretty irritating and the extra's were minimal and lousy. If you were lucky enough to have taped the game as it was on TV that night, stick to that and don't waste your money on this trash.

    5 out of 5 stars BEYOND INSPIRATION.......2007-01-16

Being from New England, it is easy to say that this to me was one of the greatest things that ever happened, ever, the amazing 2001 season from the N.E. Patriots. Even if you ain't that into sports, maybe just inspirational films that put a huge sh** eating grin on your face... this is a DVD to own (at least to check out..)
I of course was issued a copy of this after the Superbowl win in 2002, being from New England, but only dug it out recently to view it. Besides telling the story in detail about the season, game for game, it is also produced very well, by using the real NFL film footage, that is much more in depth than what we all saw on TV back when it happened. Right on the sidelines with the players, you get to watch (half the time you can see that they are almost as amazed with themselves as we were)
I guess I should spare the story, because it is written in every other review here, and really its much better shown on the DVD, but to remember the state of the team at that point... Last place underdogs the WHOLE season. Even as the team barrel rolled and got bigger and better, game for game, no one believed they would do it (maybe us New Englanders did, but we were still crossing our fingers pretty damned hard).. but everytime the stakes got higher, the team got hotter (not to mention a few divine miracles, like the enormous hurricane during the Raiders game)
You just gotta watch this thing, and see how crazy the team really got, spectacular moves all over. This is one of those sports stories that should grace the big screen... a story you couldn't make up.
    Rock on PATS!

P.S. Regarding the tribute to 9/11, god bless to all....
    but I REALLY hate U2!

4 out of 5 stars Relive New Englands First Super Bowl Championship.......2006-05-24

New England Patriots fans will no doubt want to add this Super Bowl XXXVI DVD to their collection. This highlights package of the 2001 NFL football season culminated in the Patriots winning their first league championship under difficult circumstances.

As with all other NFL championship DVDs, this is a little over an hour long highlights package of every New England Patriots regular season and playoff game, along with even more extensive highlights of the New England Patriots exciting, dramatic victory over the St. Louis Rams, 20-17, in Super Bowl XXXXVI.

This video includes many interviews, sideline sound bites, and locker room scenes throughout the season, which really brings to life the players and coaches on this fabulous team. While I always feel these video packages do not do a great job of highlighting the drama of specific games, including those in the playoffs, it does do a good of job of conveying the drama of this very interesting, unusual season for the Patriots. First, many may forget the Patriots started out 0-2, and were only 5-5 at one point in the season. Few expected this team to go too far, especially not to the Super Bowl. Probably more important, the producers of this video did a very nice job of dealing with the quarterback controversy - or lack thereof - that emerged when Tom Brady took over for the injured Drew Bledsoe, the long time New England starter. Bledsoe suffered a severe chest injury in the second regular season game against the Jets. Once Bledsoe was cleared to play later in the season, Brady kept the starting job because the Patriots were winning and Brady was on a roll. This DVD includes in season interviews with both quarterbacks talking about their situation. While there was a lot more tension on the team than is seen in the video or that the Patriots have ever made public, Bledsoe must be given great credit for not tearing the team apart and ruining their chances of success. Given his long tenure as the starter and close relationship with the players on the team, he could have easily caused great dissension on the team and split apart the locker room. But he accepted his new role with professionalism, maturity, and dignity which should endear him to most Patriots fans. Bledsoe's earned his Super Bowl ring through his maturity and his great play in the AFC Championship game against Pittsburgh when Brady twisted his ankle early in the game. This video does a nice job of highlighting and dealing with situation as the season progressed.

The video also does a nice job with the more extensive highlights of New England's playoff victories. The first, against the Oakland Raiders in the AFC Divisional Playoff game, 16-13, took place in a blizzard. This game featured the overturning of an apparent Brady fumble, under the now infamous "Tuck Rule," that would have cost the Patriots the game and some of the most amazing kicking in ridiculously bad weather by Adam Vinateri. The Patriots 24-17 victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers in Pittsburgh featured sterling play by Bledsoe when Tom Brady went down with an injury early in the game, and a Troy Brown return of a blocked field goal that help seal the game for the Patriots.

Finally, of course, there are even more extensive highlights of the dramatic 20-17 Super Bowl victory over the St. Louis Rams in Super Bowl XXXVI on a last second field goal by Adam Vinateri that was preceded by a gutsy, long drive by the Patriots with less than two minutes to go after the Rams tied the score late in the game. I still get tears in my eyes watching that kick sail through the uprights to secure our first Super Bowl victory.

The Special Features on the video are also nicely done. While I was disappointed the entire Super Bowl game was not on the video, the bonus material is quite worthwhile, even if the segments are a bit short. The bonus features include "NFL Salutes America," showing player reactions to the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks as well as the halftime show, featuring U2, which I frankly have never watched.

More interesting, and important to New England fans are the three short segments about the team itself (about five minutes a piece). First, there is a segment on the 1976 Patriots, which many consider to be the most talented Patriots team ever, which was robbed in a playoff loss against the Oakland Raiders on a bogus roughing the passer call late in the game. A second features one of New England's star players of the 1960's, Gino Cappelletti, who is now a broadcaster for Patriots game. And my favorite segment of all is on the tough, gritty Steve Grogan, the Patriots quarterback in the 1970's who I was a role model for me as kid.

This video is highly recommend for New England Patriots fans.

Disclaimer: I am a die hard New England Patriots fan and am totally biased in this review.

4 out of 5 stars Fantastic Way To Remember The Patriots 2001 Season.......2005-06-09

If you are a Patriots fan there is no way you cannot enjoy this DVD reliving the magical 2001 season, the "Snow Game", and Super Bowl XXXVI.

The only problem I have with this DVD is it's too short -- every Super Bowl DVD after this one has hours of footage instead of just an hour but you will NOT be disappointed with what is on this disc!!

3 out of 5 stars A good overview of the 2001 Pats Season..........2005-02-09

As I write this, the Patriots have won their 3rd superbowl in 4 years during the salary cap era. What an amazing game by both the Pats and Eagles (though I'm glad the Pats won). It gives you some insights and clips of some of the Pats teams from the 1976 Patriots as well as highlights of Gino Cappelletti and Steve Grogan. Just amazing to think what has happened with the Pats. I also have to quote and old review that I saw here, with my reply below:

    Reviewer: A viewer
Being a St. louis Rams fan it hurt me to see them lose a super bowl to a below average team that they should have beat. But, I guess even losers have to win sometime.

    >>>>>>>>>> Yeah, quite an average team to win 3 out of 4 superbowls this decade. :-)

I just wish they would have made a Superbowl DVD of the Rams/Titans game. Now that was a superbowl. Two teams who have never won a super bowl going at it. And a comment to the Patriots fan in Salem.......at least we went to the playoffs the following year after our super bowl win. What happened to the patriots???? And by the way, who taught you how to type????

    >>>>>>>>> 2 Superbowls in a row...... How words can come back to haunt us.

Anyway, enjoy the DVD. It is harder to find than superbowl 38, which is still in the stores. I think there should be a comprehensive DVD on the whole history of the Partiots from 1960-2005, including player interviews (both current and former players), game scores, playoff apperances, superbowl appearances, and maybe some interactive features I haven't thought of.

4 out of 5 stars Review of 3 Games to Glory III.......2006-05-13

    Introduction

3 Games to Glory III is a two-disc video compilation of the 2004 New England Patriots playoffs, including their Super Bowl victory over the Philadelphia Eagles 24-21 in Super Bowl XXXIX. This Super Bowl victory was the Patriots third in four years, marking them as the team of `00s. For New England Patriots fans it's a chance to relive the glory of back-to-back Super Bowl victories and three championships in four years. Non-New England Patriots fans probably would not particularly enjoy this in-depth video.

    Main Features

3 Games to Glory III provides extensive highlights of both New England Patriots' playoff wins and Super Bowl victory after the 2004 season.

These playoffs found New England once again schooling the Indianapolis Colts in yet another year where Peyton Manning and the vaunted Colts offensive choke under playoff pressure. The high flying Colts offense was throttled by the superior schemes and tough play of the Patriots in a 20-3 AFC Divisional Playoff win at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts.

This is followed by New England's dramatic defeat of the Pittsburgh Steelers, 41-27, in the AFC Championship Game at Heinz Field in Pittsburgh. The Patriots entered this game as decided underdogs to the 15-1 Steelers after being throttled by Pittsburgh earlier in the season.

Finally, you get to enjoy the extensive highlights of New England's impressive 24-21 win over the NFC Champion Philadelphia Eagles. This is yet another game where New England's superior execution and stamina in the later stages of the game brought them ultimate glory. The Super Bowl was played in Jacksonville, Florida on February 6, 2005.

The highlights of each game are very extensive and seem to cover nearly every play. They are also mostly well done, but frankly the highlights often fail to capture the real drama of the game. Of course no highlight reel can match the excitement and drama of a live contest, but there are times when key turning points of the game really just become another quick hit in the video.

There are a few disappointments in this video though and it's not quite as well done as the preceding 3 Games to Glory II (covering the Patriots playoff run and Super Bowl victory after the 2003 season). First, there is not as much pre-game drama and preparation presented in these videos compared to last year. Secondly, there are not as many close up, on the field shots that bring the game right into your living room. It's much more distant and not as close up as previous editions in this series.

Despite these drawbacks, it's still great to relive a great season through these videos.

    Bonus Features

The bonus features on this edition of 3 Games to Glory are not nearly as good as the ones on 3 Games to Glory II. The bonus features are nice they just didn't live up the standard in the previous edition. Following is a brief rundown of what you'll get on the DVD.

There are some "Bill Belichick" breakdowns of key plays for each game but there are very few of them and really leaves the viewer wanting more.

There's also a "Points After: Sounds of the Game" which shows post-Super Bowl press conference features, but again, it's really short and leaves you wanting more.

The "Patriot's All Access" which appears along with each of the playoff and Super Bowl wins shows locker room scenes and practices, team meetings, and other shots of players as they prepare for games. These are pretty well done short features that add a great deal to the video.

The "All Access" section for the Super Bowl of course included pre-game plane trip, post game party and the parade. I find these a bit boring frankly, but I guess it's nice to see the players up close on their daily routines.

The Super Bowl Highlights are shown twice, once with the regular commentary and once with commentary from Rosevelt Colvin (LB), Ted Johnson (LB), and Matt Light (T). Matt Light is a funny guy and this was more entertaining than the one last year.

I thought the best bonus feature was one on Disc Two called "Views from the Past" with interviews with three great players from previous decades - Gino Cappelletti of the 1960's, Michael Haynes of the 1970's, and Andre Tippett of the 1980's and 1990's. This conversation was mostly about comparing this current Patriots' team with teams of the past and how the game has changed over the decades.

Finally, the video has the 2005 playoff roster, Super Bowl stats, and 2005 game by game results - just like you can get in any book, it just shows it printed on the screen.

Overall, while all these bonus features are nice, 3 Games to Glory III is not nearly as good as 3 Games to Glory II. It did not include an extensive behind the scenes segment on the Super Bowl, which I found fascinating on the previous edition, nor did it have highlights for each game of the regular season like the previous edition. I found the lack of these too items very disappointing as I thought they were outstanding editions to last year's disc.

Nevertheless, the bonus features overall are nice, just nice as nice as last time.

    Bottom Line

All New England fans should enjoy reliving a third Super Bowl win through this highlights package. It's mostly well done and certainly brings back great memories of a great season. Those who are not Patriots fans I am sure would find the video quite boring.

5 out of 5 stars Best 6hrs of my life.......2006-02-14

I bought this DVD right at the end of the 2005 season after the game against the Broncos. I was down in the dumps as most "fans of New England" were so I needed a pick me up and all of my ice cream was gone. I had so much fun watching this DVD. Starting with the game against the Colts I remember being so excited when I first watched the game on TV but watching it again (without commercials and annoying officals) was even better. Any true Patriots fan needs to own this. Also the All Access footage is great (the whole pre-trip and trip to the Super Bowl is great!)

You don't have to be a New England Patriots fan to enjoy this 3-hour DVD from NFL Films, but it sure helps. The highlight is found in the extras--every play from Super Bowl XXXVIII (the best ever, dare we say?), in which the Patriots prevailed 32-29 over the Carolina Panthers. Using the TV feed for visuals with the radio feed with Dick Stockton, you can view every play in just over an hour with a great deal of the excitement still intact. On-screen graphics and a few replays keep you in the action, and only purists will resist the chance to relive the exciting game in this condensed format. Other extras include in-depth game analysis, highlights from "media day," and post-game interviews (some right on the field). Unlike previous highlight packages, there are no performances from the pre-game or notorious halftime show. The main hour-long program recaps the Patriots 17-win season with NFL Films' winning mix of excellent photography, invigorating music, tightly edited player interviews, and the poetic mastery of narrator Harry Kalas. --Doug Thomas

I just love what Warner Brothers did for this dvd. I have loved the Pats for years and even though I live in Missouri now I still suport my home team even though kids hate them here. Tom Brady is the best quarterback ever and I like to see him play well. I honor every Pats super bowl victory to be deticated to my whole familey in Fitchburg Massachusetts!

The New England Patriots are playing against the Carolina Panthers. A part of me wanted the panters to win cause the Panthers quarterback was born in Breaux Bridge, Louisiana and I'm a Louisiana person myself. But I also wanted the Patriots to win more. The first quarter was so sloppy it was just a pitiful lousey game. When the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th quarter came it started to get better and better. The same guy that kick the field goal and score the winning point for the Patroits 2 years has now done it for this game right before the clock ran out. Tom Brady has now two championship rings. I was dissapointed that this dvd didn't show the super bowl halftime show with Janet Jackson exposed her boob. When is the uncut verson coming out.

4 out of 5 stars Great Way To Remember The 2003 Season.......2005-06-09

Unlike the 2001 season DVD, this one has a lot more footage but I wish they had even more behind the scenes footage in the locker room. Aside from that, the recap of all the games is very good and it details a great playoff season as well. Solid DVD and any Patriots fan will not be disappointed!!

    5 out of 5 stars JUST GREAT.......2005-02-11

The night before XXXIX I watched this and just hoped that Patriots would repeat. There are three segments of this DVD that really showcase Brady. The first is an early season game when he is in the pocket making his reads. In slow motion you see his head move from left to right 1, 2, 3, and then he zips the ball to his receiver. The second shows his pocket presence. As the pocket colapses he deftly pushes off his lineman, directs his his recever and passes for a competion. The last is the coin toss of an overtime game. The Ref tosses the coin and then there is some disagreement about what the opposing team called. Brady says to the ref, "look at him, he knows he's lying." It's just funny.

The Patriots have always been a team I root for. I guess as a Minnesota resident, the only time I would not want them to win is if they were playing the Vikequeens.

      - a back-view glimpse of the pony-tailed driver in the terrorists' getaway vehicle during the foiled assassination attempt in England;
      - a side-view glance of the pony-tailed driver in the terrorists' getaway vehicle during an unsuccessful assassination attempt on his life outside the US Naval Academy;

The Hunt for Red October: Before Harrison Ford assumed the mantle of playing Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan hero in Patriot Games, Alec Baldwin took a swing at the character in this John McTiernan film and hit one to the fence. Ryan must figure out his true motives for approaching the United States. McTiernan (Predator, Die Hard) made an exceptionally handsome movie here, with action sequences that really do take one's breath away. --Tom Keogh

Patriot Games: Let's see--he's been Han Solo in three films and Indiana Jones in three more. In this film Ryan and his family are on vacation when Ryan saves a member of the British royal family from attack by Irish terrorists.

Clear and Present Danger: The third installment in the cinematic incarnation of Tom Clancy's CIA analyst Jack Ryan and the second starring Harrison Ford, this follow-up to Patriot Games is a more complex, rewarding, and bolder film than its predecessor. The DVD release has a widescreen presentation, a theatrical trailer, closed captioning, an optional French soundtrack, and optional Spanish subtitles. --Tom Keogh

This boxed set contains three of the greatest movies based on the CIA. But the boxed set lacks special features that make buying DVD's great. But a great addition to your DVD collection because you do not get the same picture and sound quality from a VHS.

5 out of 5 stars Great Box Set.......2002-07-23

This is a great box set. If you like Tom Clancy, then you will like these movies. It is also a great deal to buy them all together, much cheaper then the local store.

In short, you can't go wrong.

5 out of 5 stars The Hunt for Red October.......2002-06-11

This was the first Jack Ryan picture I had seen. From the beginning to the end of this movie, I was enthralled. It was believable, well acted and plausable. The principal actors and all lessor parts were beautifully intertwined to give us a plausable, exciting, intelligent story of intrigue done with a masterful flare.
This is a DVD I have seen at least 7 times and funny as it may seem, I always find something I haven't picked up on. It's a must have and SEE for those intrigued with human nature and the powers of goodness and evil!

      4 out of 5 stars Harrison Rocks!.......2002-06-02

Harrison Ford is excellent in Patriot Games and Clear and Present Danger. The only thing I don't like about Hunt for Red October is Alec Baldwin. Harrison should have played Jack Ryan in that too. Alec Baldwin STINKS!
