2002's popular video-game-derived hit Resident Evil didn't inspire confidence in a sequel, but Resident Evil: Apocalypse defies odds and surpasses expectations. It's a bigger, better, action-packed zombie thriller, and this time Milla Jovovich (as the first film's no-nonsense heroine) is joined by more characters from the popular Capcom video games, including Jill Valentine (played by British hottie Sienna Guillory) and Carlos Olivera (Oded Fehr, from 1999's The Mummy). They're armed and ready for a high-caliber encounter with devil dogs, mutant "Lickers," lurching zombies, and the leather-clad monster known only as Nemesis, unleashed by the nefarious Umbrella Corporation responsible for creating the cannibalistic undead horde. Having gained valuable experience as a respected second-unit director on high-profile films like Gladiator and The Bourne Identity, director Alexander Witt elevates this junky material to the level of slick, schlocky entertainment. --Jeff Shannon

Description

4 out of 5 stars Horror-bad, action-good!.......2007-08-01

This is not a horror movie. This film does not compare well with horror movies. This is an action movie with zombies. It compares very well with other action movies. Starting where Resident Evil ended, the bullets start flying and the zombies start chomping immediately (do watch RE before this one). Although the script is hardly award winning, the movie delivers much more than you would reasonably expect from a video game based zombie movie. The actors are capable enough, and even if you find them stiff and generic, it's okay - most of them don't survive very long. Sadly, the comedy relief guy isn't funny at all and he does survive the whole movie. Also, the martial arts and special effects are good overall (except for the CGI Dobermans which are awful). Somehow the film avoids being predictable and sets up the last part of the trilogy nicely. Whether or not you've played the video game (I haven't), Resident Evil: Apocalypse is sure to satisfy cravings for a fast-paced action movie with sexy, gun-toting, butt-kicking babes if you can forgive a few rather forced script elements (like main characters strolling through a graveyard totally oblivious to the risk this involves during a zombie uprising!)

4 out of 5 stars Good Sequel.......2007-07-06

This is a great sequel to the original. Although it didn't seem as dark and scary as the first, it made up for it in action. The movie picks up where the first one left off. As our heroine has escaped the hospital she finds a devastated world. She must find her only surviving friend and do what she can to bring the Umbrella Corporation down. She finds out more horrible truths about them and is assisted by a unlikely allie. Both movies complement each other nicely. I definitely recommend you add this to your Horror/SciFi collection. A must for anyone that owns "Resident Evil". I am looking forward to the third movie in this set.

5 out of 5 stars A-lot better than the first.good flick. Actors are awesome in their respective parts. Milla Jovovich is severely underrated.......2007-06-26

This movie is almost perfect in its execution. Sure its still not completely faithful to the game but hey you cant have it all. This movie is so entertaining you will not even notice the time passing. Nemesis is scary and tough. The story is actually very good and entertaining as well. Siena Guillroy is excellent as Jill Valentine and Oded Fehr is a very good Carlos Oliveira. All in all a very entertaining good movie.

5 out of 5 stars Fun to watch on the go!.......2007-05-09

RE: Apocalypse is a fun movie for me to watch, enjoying some of my favorite actors fighting through hordes of the undead to save a girl and get a way out of a locked down city before a nuclear explosion wipes everything out.

As a person studying abroad, I got the UMD for the reason that it's easy to watch on my PSP on the plane or late at night, not having a TV around to watch it on. And I don't have to worry about a larger disc being broken in transit or the case cracking.

A fun movie to watch, and compact enough to carry around easily.

3 out of 5 stars R.E.: THE GAMERS VERSION........2007-04-28

When I first rented the original "Resident Evil" I was completely shocked at how much I liked it. I had zero expectations for it, yet was sucked in by it's story, characters and visualisation. So I ran out and purchased it (as soon as it was on sale). Since then I've watched it about 10 times, which is pretty remarkable considering I have roughly 350 DVDs to choose from. Given this, as a non-gamer, I was surprised to find that gamers were generally disappointed in this movie (not all of them, but most negative reviews were from gamers).

Now we have "Resident Evil- Apocalypse". Don't get to see "grown-up" movies at the theater, so I had to wait until the DVD release. I liked the first so much, I did not even think of renting this. I quickly bought the DVD (when it went on sale, never buy at full price)with much anticipation. Roughly 3 years later I have viewed it approximately (well, ACTUALLY)1 time. That's right, no type-o. JUST ONCE. It was not nearly as compelling as the first film (to me). Gone was the gripping story, the great camera work, the excellent character development. In the stead of this great stuff was some sort of "made-for-cable" goofy monster movie. Now, I did not hate it, (I actually like goofy monster movies) but it is not begging me to watch it again. It's so in-your-face that after one viewing, there was nothing left to see. No mystery. No subtlety. No sense of future dread. It was done.

But wow! Gamers really like it!! Now it all makes sense. Since I find shooter games extremely redundant and difficult to play more than once, I found this movie to be the same. A one timer (OK maybe 2). Kind of like sixth sense. Once you get to the end, well.. ...it's over.

Cinematically, comparing this to the fist film is like comparing the first "Star Wars" to the last (I'm talking release dates, not "Lucas-Time"). It's comparing something that is a carfully thought out and woven tale, to something that is simply a series of evens strung together to make a story. Kind of like Shooter video games. You travel down a linear path and take on what's in front of you. Unfortunatly this is a film!

I can't say don't buy this if you liked the first. It's nice to have a continuation of the first. Just don't go in with the same expectations.

4 out of 5 stars The movie is OK... Blu-ray is wow........2007-09-10

This was my first time watching a blu-ray movie and although I saw a difference right away in clarity and color, I thought to myself it wasn't THAT much of a difference, that is until I saw the standard definition clips in the bonus section.

While the difference is not as HUGE if you're using an upconverting DVD player, it is different nonetheless and is noticeable. No type of technology will smooth a scene (or movie) meant to be dark and grainy by design, so I won't hold it against Blu-ray (or any HD format) yet. I'm waiting for another 6 Blu-ray movies to arrive and will update this review once I get to see them.

As far as the movie itself, I mean, it's a videogame based movie, so don't expect "Gone with the wind" plot and depth. It's an action movie for the sake of action with a cast that is not known for their acting (with a few exceptions). If you're a fan of the videogame, it's great to see the characters show up in the movie and I also liked the continuity from the previous movie. You get to learn some more of what happened in-between. If that seems like an obvious trait for a movie to have, you're not too familiar with movies based on videogames [laughs]...

Overall, it's good for a rental and don't forget the popcorn.

1 out of 5 stars Not a good transfer, but at least it was free........2007-08-02

I don't understand all the good reviews of this movie. The blu-ray transfer is not good. The movie looks grainy and blurry in some parts. It was almost like looking a standard DVD. And about the movie itself, it's very bad! If you want a good blu-ray transfer look further. I'm glad that this movie was free with the purchase of the PS3 because I wouldn't pay for it (not even as a rental).
The Resident Evil video games are better than this movie.

3 out of 5 stars Dissapointing Transfer.......2007-08-01

Many of dvd look better than this blue-ray in the same PS3 upscale. Movie not bad, but picture could had been better.

4 out of 5 stars Good movie, blue-ray OK.......2007-04-07

Its an average blu-ray, but I love the movie itself. I guess I am a Milla fan.

5 out of 5 stars Resident Evil - Apocalypse Blu-ray.......2007-03-29

This movie is an awesome example of blu-ray technology. It looked and sounded amazing. And the movie itself is great on it's own. The only drawback is that, like most blu-rays, the special features are lacking.

5 out of 5 stars A note about this film........2007-09-04

This film is frequently miscategorized as a fictionalized action film when it is, in reality, a highly accurate documentary where all of the events occur in real time. In order to truly enjoy this film, you must keep that in mind.

4 out of 5 stars "This guy eats too much red meat!".......2007-09-04

COMMANDO (1985) marked the beginning of "Ahnold's" shift from stoic, badly acted adventure flicks with no dialogue to stoic, badly acted adventure flicks with dialogue.

COMMANDO gives us the Governator at his steroidal apotheosis. The unrelieved muscularity of his physique is unbelievable in this film. A human mountain, he plays John Matrix, a Rambo-like figure who is dragged out of retirement by the Colonel Trautman-like General Kirby after members of his ultra-secret unit are killed in a series of hits.

Although "Matrix" translates as "Womb" in Latin, the English word has an inorganic feel to it, and in fact COMMANDO presages and even exceeds THE TERMINATOR films in its gratutitous violence. Matrix is a killing machine. Fortunately for the story, he is also a sympathetic doting father to Jenny (Alyssa Milano at age ten), and he has a wicked sense of humor---the one-liners in COMMANDO are legendary.

Matrix's idyllic retirement comes to an abrupt end when a crummy South American dictator, once overthrown by Matrix, plots his return to power and kidnaps Jenny to ensure Matrix's cooperation in overthrowing his democratic successor. Matrix sets out with the twin goals of rescuing Jenny and wreaking hell on said South American dictator. Along the way, Matrix shanghaies Cindy (Rae Dawn Chong) into helping him.

The violence is cartoonish and hilarious. Matrix jumps out of flying jets, he rips bucket seats out of cars barehanded, he smashes those same cars into telephone poles without injury, he breaks other people's bones with abandon, he drives bulldozers into stores, kills bad guys by the dozen, creatively "redecorates" the Galleria Mall, and all through it, he mutters lines like, "I eat Green Berets for breakfast...and right now I'm very hungry!" and "Remember when I said I'd kill you last? I lied." shortly before dropping a bad guy off a cliff ("I let him go," Matrix explains to Cindy).

In the third reel the Bandido Osterreicher revenges Butch and Sundance by singlehandedly killing the entire army of a small South American country, in the process rescuing his daughter, eliminating the crummy South American dictator, and finishing off Bennett, a rogue member of his old unit who is impaled by a length of iron pipe (which then emits a ton of steam).

Forget logic. Forget reality. Essentially a live action cartoon, COMMANDO is a classic of the Beer Film genre of the mid-80's. Invite some buddies, crack open a few cold ones, ask She Who Must Be Obeyed to keep an eye on the hot dogs and chili, and kick back.

5 out of 5 stars I eat Green Berets for breakfast and right now I'm very hungry!.......2007-08-31

If you think you've seen Commando before on DVD then you're gonna pass on this one, right?

WRONG!

This guilty pleasure is one of my all-time favorite testosterone pumping 80's Ahnuld action flicks chock full of some of the most memorable and hilariously over-the-top one-liners ever assembled in a single Schwarzenneger film with an exhaustive body count tally of 81 confirmed kills. Now it's finally getting the UNRATED Director's Cut treatment it deserves so we can see even more of the Governator at his macho 80's Republican finest.

The Commando Director's Cut DVD features the original 90-minute theatrical film plus an all-new 95-minute unrated version as envisioned by director Mark L. Lester restoring over five minutes of never-before-seen footage back into the film. Additional DVD special features include director audio commentary, deleted scenes, two behind-the-scenes featurettes, photo galleries and more.

Special Features:

Commando Director's Cut is presented in widescreen (1.85:1 aspect ratio) with English 5.1 Dolby Digital and Dolby Surround audio, Spanish Mono, French Stereo plus French and Spanish subtitles.
Bonus content includes:

* Seamlessly branched Director's Cut with never-before-seen footage
* Audio commentary by director Mark Lester (on theatrical version only)
* Deleted Scenes
* Pure Action featurette
* Let Off Some Steam featurette
* Photo galleries with over 150 images

Product Description

Something rotten is brewing beneath the industrial mecca known as Raccoon City. Unknown to its millions of residents, a huge underground bioengineering facility known as The Hive has accidentally unleashed the deadly and mutating T-virus, killing all of its employees. To contain the leak, the governing supercomputer, Red Queen, has sealed all entrances and exits. Now a team of highly-trained super commandos including Rain (Michelle Rodriguez - The Fast and the Furious, Girlfight), Alice (Milla Jovovich - The Fifth Element) and Matt (Eric Mabius - Cruel Intentions) must race to penetrate The Hive in order to isolate the T-virus before it overwhelms humanity. To do so, they must get past the Red Queen's deadly defenses, face the flesh-eating undead employees, fight killer mutant dogs and battle The Licker, a genetically mutated savage beast whose strength increases with each of its slain victims.

Marilyn Manson worked on the soundtrack, so it's no surprise that Resident Evil is best enjoyed by headbangers, goth guys, and PlayStation junkies. Like the interactive game it's based on, this horror hybrid pits a small band of SWAT-like commandos (including Milla Jovovich and Girlfight's Michelle Rodriguez) against a ravenous hoard of zombies, resulting in a gorefest that only sociopaths could love. The tenacious heroes are trapped inside the Hive--an underground complex where an evil corporation conducts illegal research with a deadly virus--and the zombies (reanimated corpses of sacrificed employees) are fodder for endless rounds of gunfire. It's utter nonsense (not unlike director Paul W.S. Anderson's previous Event Horizon), so your best defense is to wallow in it or avoid this trash altogether. A few cool sequences are borrowed from better films (that slice-and-dice laser is cribbed from the 1998 Canadian shocker Cube), but if you're in the mood for heavy-metal carnage, this movie's for you. --Jeff Shannon

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars This is a GOOD horror/action movie!.......2007-08-29

Yes, it's based off of a video game. Yes, the plot is thin. Were you expecting effin' Shakespeare? This is the best video game to movie adaptation there is. Also, one of the better zombie movies. It's a hell of a lot better than 28 Days Later. And, for my money, better than the remake of Dawn of the Dead. Which was good. This is a movie for people who want to see things shot, blown up, etc. That's why people make/watch these. If you expect more, then you only have yourself to blame and shouldn't trash the movie because of it. All in all this is a great movie as well as the sequel.

1 out of 5 stars Quite possibly the worst film ever made.......2007-08-14

You watch an Ed Wood film, it's bad, but it's fun. It's fun because the director cared, and despite the fact that Ed Wood wasn't a good director, his personality and care is evident in his films.

Resident Evil is made by Paul Anderson, and he quite obviously doesn't care.

Forget what all of you are saying about 'It's another silly zombie movie' or 'It's from a game so I suppose it was always going to be bad'.

The reality is, the games are extremely well executed, as are George A Romero films (G.A.R being the original guy who was to direct this.)

A great story is in the telling, this story was not told well. It could not have been told worse. This guy, quite obviously, has no idea of how to tell a story or direct a film. I trusted him due to Mortal Kombat and Event Horizon, but after Resident Evil and the appauling AVP, it would appear that those first two films are only as good as they are due to good producers and scripts.

Stay away, stay well away.

An absolute travesty in every sense. To think of the millions of lives you could save with the money that was wasted on this garbage.

1 out of 5 stars A very bad joke for fans of the game!.......2007-08-14

This movie is a real nightmare. I'm still hoping to wake up one day and realise that it was just a bad dream. That Paul Anderson never made this movie or that it was made by somebody who actually respected the work of the game creators and the devoted fans. I don't understand what was so hard. The characters and the story were already there. Why did he have to change it completly? Too simple? Even better. S.D. Perry made a good book out of the game. Anderson could have taken some ideas from the book but, noooo! That would've been too easy! Simply change the name of Umbrella, take out the licker and the dogs, then change the name of the movie and nobody will notice that it was suppose to be the adaptation of the game Resident Evil. I hate to admit that it is an entertaining movie but, it's not RE.

4 out of 5 stars Resident Evil Reigns in Action/Horror!.......2007-07-29

This 1st Resident Evil movie directed by AVP director Paul W. S. Anderson was actually pretty darn good. Much better than the next movie in this trilogy, Apocalypse. (But the next one, Extinction, looks the very best!)

But this 1st movie was a thrill ride with solid acting and good action sequences, some never seen before, which is always a good thing. And it ends with a shocker! Leaving the movie watcher wanting more.

Milla Jovovich does her best acting thus far in this movie, carrying the movie that most action women can't do. She didn't do the 2nd movie justice, and didn't look as good either. But then, the whole 2nd movie was a mess. Bad B movie.

This is a B-movie that looks and acts like a grade A movie.

And the third one - Extinction - coming out this September looks like the biggest and best one thus far. Looking forward to it.

5 out of 5 stars The best adaptation.......2007-07-06

I am about ten years from retirement to give you an idea of my age. And yet I enjoy many of the new horror movies if they have something besides all head banging music and tons of gore. This movie will rock your world no matter what age you are. Many adaptations of games do not make it in my replayable list. This one excels there. This is one you will find yourself regularly popping in the player for a revisit of the haunting music, great acting, and scary as hell zombies and other creatures. This is by far one of my favorite horror movies. Well thought out screenplay, excellent directing, and super music score. I give it a high recommendation. I haven't owned a console game since the first Nintendo, but this movie has tempted me to buy a new one even though I prefer the PC versions. By the way I did not care for the last Final Fantasy movie, but I'm sure game console gamers may. This movie although possibly not as appreciated by those with game consoles, will definitely be appreciated by Horror/SciFi movie fans. I recommend the sequel as well. Although not quite as scary, still quite good in the action department.

Rambo meets Alien in this terrific science-fiction thriller from 1987, directed by John McTiernan just a year before Die Hard made him Hollywood's most sought-after director of action-packed blockbusters. Arnold Schwarzenegger leads an elite squad of U.S. Army commandos to a remote region of South American jungle, where they've been assigned to search for South American officials who've been kidnapped by terrorists. Instead they find a bunch of skinned corpses hanging from the trees and realize that they're now facing a mysterious and much deadlier threat. As the squad is picked off one by one, Arnold finds himself pitted against a hideous alien creature that's heavily armed and wearing a spacesuit enabling the creature to render itself invisible. The title says it all in describing the relentless, escalating action that follows, maintained by McTiernan with an abundance of visual flair. The film's special effects are still impressive, and stunning locations in the Mexican jungles create a combined atmosphere of verdant beauty and imminent danger. The plot doesn't hold up to much scrutiny, but the movie's so exciting and tightly paced that its weaknesses seem irrelevant. --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars There's only one man who can take on Predator: The Govonator.......2007-09-07

We, Sid the Elf, wanted a real nice B to kick the weekend off perfectly, so we picked up Predator. Well, Sid was stunned. Predator was a perfectly done action flick. Don't take us wrong, anytime Arnold is teamed with Jesse the body Ventura, Apollo Creed, and the immortal Chink Webber from Lockup the B will be flowing like wine. There was an ample ammount of explosions, totally awsome guns, and the toughest lines around.(We're not even going to mention anymore that anytime Arnold talks the possibility for hillarity is there) With that said, Predator was the perfect guy movie, the only thing that was missing was smokin hot chicks. Yeah awsome. But, we found ourselves saying no less than 10 times during the screening, "This movie is killer!" or something comperable.

So, Sid would have to say, if you're looking for a B action to laugh at stay away from Predator. However, if you want to get totally pumped and watch an all-time killer action flick, Predator is your Vehicle baby.

4 out of 5 stars Just as good tweny years later........2007-09-05

After twenty years this is still one of the quintessential action movies. Better than it's sequel and far, far superior to AVP. I place it right next to Aliens as one of the best sci-fi movies ever. With few exceptions the FX are on par with those seen in today's films. The casting is nearly flawless, I not talking about great actors here, what I mean is they are perfectly cast in these roles. Carl Weathers, Jesse Ventura, and Sonny Landham really make you believe in these guys. Sure they're over the top and comic book like with bulging muscles but the way they are portrayed makes you actually give a damn about what happens to them. Even thought Arnold wins in the end it costs him his entire team to achieve victory, if you can call it that.

The DVD itself has a lot of great behind the scenes stuff. The transfer of the movie could have been better but it is twenty years old so I can't expect it to look perfect. Great film.

3 out of 5 stars MST3K Fans Rejoice -- Rifftrax is Here!.......2007-08-24

Something lurks in the dense jungle. Something horrible and cruel, a creature from beyond our world. His name is Arnold Schwarzenegger. He lurks next to another unspeakable creature named Jesse Ventura. And another, goes by the handle Carl Weathers. Who himself lurks next to a monstrous slab of flesh known as Bill Duke. Together, they face down a creature who, quite understandably, hunts them for their skulls, hoping to fetch a fair price for them at the many Open Skull Markets that dot the galaxy. (If you haven't been to one, you must go. Take the kids, because the markets are very family friendly and they have these great Hawaiian Ice stands. And, of course, there's the skulls.)

Predator unseals a whole tin of whoop-bottom, trotting out cliches like so many, well, like so many boiled human skulls at the terrific Open Skull Market on Nespus VIII (honestly, I know I sound like I'm raving, but it really is just a great way to spend a Saturday, and it's fairly reasonable, too.)

Finally, a good use for your Predator DVD that isn't "propping up that one corner of the entertainment stand, the one whose castor you snapped off when you were moving out of that place on Spring Street because you just couldn't hack sharing a place with Beezer anymore, on account of his socks."

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best Movies Ever Made!.......2007-08-20

Almost everyone has seen or herd of the movie Predator, and if you haven't then you must be living under a rock. This movie is assume, I watch like every time it is ever on TV! A must have for any Arnold Schwarzenegger fan! Get this two disc collectors edition!

5 out of 5 stars A top-notch,suspenseful action film.......2007-08-10

Alan "Dutch" Schaefer(Arnold Schwarzenegger)is a major in the United States Army, with a successful and respected career behind him. So,this makes Alan Schaefer's assignment to fly to a Central American country to rescue hostages held by guerilla fighters simple, right?

Wrong!!! Shortly after Alan Schaefer and his friend/colleague Major George Dillon(Carl Weathers)have arrived to their destination with a small army(Bill Duke's character of Mac,Jesse Ventura's character of Blain,Sonny Landham's character of Billy,Richard Chaves' character of Poncho, and Shane Black's character of Hawkins),things turn out to be difficult and untruthful. They only get worse when Alan Schaefer,George Dillon, and their army encounter something much more worse than they expected.

What is that something? An alien predator("portrayed" by the late actor Kevin Peter Hall--RIP)is present, and his ready to demolish Alan Schaefer,George Dillon, and their team of men. Alan Schaefer,George Dillon, and their army may have experience. But,the alien predator they are up against is much more of an enemy that they were ever prepared for. Stopping him and saving themselves isn't going to be an easy.

"Predator" may be an action film, but there is not a thing keeping it from being perfect. The plot may be far-fetched,but the script has an edge of darkness that saves it from that. "Predator" delivers richly executed suspense from top to bottom, with a beauty that few other films have. That beauty? That beauty is that while watching "Predator",you really do not know who will win--the good side,or the bad side. The action is entertaining and goes along well with the plot, while it succeeds in not being violent just for the sake of violence. All of that, alongside good chemistry between the characters in "Predator" brought to life by good acting,as well as astounding special and visual effects, allow "Predator" to fully come together, and be the good film that it is.

If you like action films and have time to watch a film, give "Predator" a try. It is one of the most well-constructed action films ever made, and you can't go wrong with the special feautures on this DVD,either.

Anyone who fought in Vietnam can tell you that the war bore little resemblance to this propagandistic action film starring and codirected by John Wayne. But the film itself is not nearly as bad as its reputation would suggest; critics roasted its gung-ho politics while ignoring its merits as an exciting (if rather conventional and idealistic) war movie. Some notorious mistakes were made--in the final shot, the sun sets in the east!--and it's an awkward attempt to graft WWII heroics onto the Vietnam experience. But as the Duke's attempt to acknowledge the men who were fighting and dying overseas, it's a rousing film in which Wayne commands a regiment on a mission to kidnap a Viet Cong general. David Janssen plays a journalist who learns to understand Wayne's commitment to battling Communism, and Jim Hutton (Timothy's dad) plays an ill-fated soldier who adopts a Vietnamese orphan. In addition to its widescreen image, the digital video disc includes a promotional featurette and seven different theatrical trailers. --Jeff Shannon

Description

John Wayne leads his special forces troops against the enemy in this first Hollywood treatment of the Vietnam War. It's rugged battle action all the way. David Janssen and Jim Hutton co-star.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Great cast, weak story.......2007-08-19

The common approach to reviews for The Green Berets seems to focus on whether or not the reviewer was in favor of the war and then either praise the movie or condemn it based on that. I thought I'd try something different and review this as a movie without providing an op-ed piece on the war itself.

First off, the cast in this movie is its strong point. John Wayne and David Janssen are the two biggest names but a lot of wonderful character actors provide the movie with a heart and soul that go well beyond what the script provides. Wayne himself gives one of his best performances and Jim Hutton is especially memorable as Sgt. Peterson.

The story first follows Wayne to a US camp set up in Viet Cong (VC) territory. He leads an effort to prepare for an assault that they know will come. The defense of the camp takes up roughly the first two thirds of the movie. Then, with almost no transition, there is a covert mission to kidnap a VC general behind enemy lines. The camp story frankly drags and could have been cut by at least 20 minutes without losing anything. The mission to kidnap the general is really laughable. I'm sorry to say that it's like something a 12 year old would imagine a covert operation to be. Wayne is one of two middle-aged colonels and at least three sergeants go along... all chiefs and no Indians. Special forces missions are run by young, fit men who are the best of the best not by men who primarily sit behind a desk. Since the movie was already running long, it's a bit of a mystery to me why they felt this second story needed to be grafted onto the end like that.

Overall, the Green Berets is not one of Wayne's better movies. I love the cast and they alone do make it watchable, but probably not enjoyable for many. As is also obvious from the other reviews here, there is a strong pro-war sentiment and if that offends you then this will certainly not help your enjoyment of the film. I just wish that a top-notch writer had been employed to improve the script, as the movie would certainly have benefited from it. As it is, I can only recommend it to true fans of the great John Wayne, as they will be more forgiving of the film's obvious flaws.

5 out of 5 stars Overlooked facts about this movie and John Wayne.......2007-07-02

In light of America's present situation in Iraq in July,2007, it is quite natural that the Vietnam experience is being viewed in hindsight and films like this are getting a new viewing.

First, this movie is based on a 1964 novel about the Green Berets. When it was released in 1968 in the aftermath of the Tet Offensive(which America won) the American public and its leadership had rejected the overly optimistic outlook and bought the line the war was unwinnable and America should withdraw regardless of what happened to the South Vietnamese. If this was released in 1964, when there were few war critics outside of leftist and Black nationalist circles, it would have accurately reflected this country's view of South Vietnam and the war in 1964.

Second, John Wayne is like many war movie stars. It is a known fact that Charlie Sheen (Platoon), Mel Gibson( When we were Soldiers) Chuck Norris (Missing in Action 1,2and 3) and Sly Stallone (First Blood 1,2 and 3) never served in combat or the military. However, John Wayne did tour South Vietnam with the USO. Movie actors are selected on box office drawing power not their backgrounds. If John Wayne wasn't in this movie, would this be a classic ?

Third, this movie didn't accurately portray the corruption, nepotism, indecisiveness and bad decisions of the South Vietnamese army and its officials (which led to South Vietnam's defeat in 1975). It also didn't show the American killing of civilians (which did not occur regularly until after the big build up began in 1965 and were generally committed by units such as the Americal Division with suffered from bad leadership). What it did show was North Vietnamese troops were active in South Vietnam before 1965 (the left always denies this). their slaughter of civilians in this movie was a glimpse of what they were to do in Hue in 1968 (the left still says the massacre never happened) and in all of South East Asia after 1975.

Finally, John Wayne did do something that wasn't common at the time in military movies, he put a African-American actor (Raymond St. Jacques) in a leading role. Jacques portrayl of Sgt McGhee came accross as very dignified and intelligent. As the medic of the unit, he was ask by Lt. Col. Kirby (Wayne) for advice. Although John Wayne was not known to be a Civil Rights supporter and considered to be a racist by many radical Black circles, the character of Sgt McGhee was a breakthrough in potrayal of African-Americans in the movies.

I watched this movie along with Platoon during my basic training at Fort Dix, N.J. in 1987. The recruits loved it! However, this was during the Reagan era when the cold war was a fact of life. Those supporters and critics should accept this movie for what it is John Wayne's view about a war based on a novel that was written when most of America shared his views on Vietnam.

5 out of 5 stars The Green Berets.......2007-06-10

This is a eye opening movie regarding the Vietnam war. It is an excellent movie.

5 out of 5 stars Americans will love it...left wingers go elsewhere!.......2007-03-14

My father served two tours in Vietnam and both he and I enjoyed this great John Wayne flick.

The movie focuses on the Special Forces operating in Vietnam. It includes a huge battle at a base camp demonstarting the use of both ground and air forces in coordination, a combat technique employed today. It also features a secreat raid to capture a top VC officer.

The movie shows something not often demonstarted in Oliver Stone and similiar lefties Vietnam movies-the suffering of Vietnamese by the commies and the loyal support of the Montanyards(sp?) to America.

Maybe not 100% accurate but it is 100% American!

4 out of 5 stars John Wayne Should Have Remained an Actor.......2007-03-01

I am awarding "The Green Berets" four stars merely because of its importance to our national debate concerning Vietnam. Other then that, it is aesthetically speaking a mediocre movie. It is definitely not Academy Award material. Was John Wane unable to find suitable investors within the left-wing Hollywood community? Should we assume that the movie was made on a shoe string budget? Whatever, Wayne should not have been so involved in the production. The screen play is mediocre and the direction is about what would expect in a made for TV movie. The actors mouth embarrassing cliches. Even the music score was awful. Am I a leftist who disagrees with Wayne's position on the war? Nope, he and I are on the exact same page. The United States was valiantly trying to save the Vietnamese people from the evil Communists. Unfortunately, our troops were stabbed in the back by the leftist media and it allies.

Watching "The Green Berets" is something of an unpleasant experience. John Wayne obviously meant well. It is sad that this desperately needed movie was not better. It may have made a huge difference in convincing the American people to stay the course.

Aptly described by critic Roger Ebert as "a vomitorium of viscera," Blade II takes the express route to sequel success. So if you enjoyed Blade, you'll probably drool over this monster mash, which is anything but boring. Set (and filmed) in Prague, the plot finds a new crop of "Reaper" vampires threatening to implement a viral breeding program, and they're nearly impervious to attacks by Blade (Wesley Snipes), his now-revived mentor Whistler (Kris Kristofferson), and a small army of "normal" vampires who routinely combust in a constant conflagration of spectacular special effects. It's up to Blade to conquer the über-vamps, and both Snipes and director Guillermo del Toro (Mimic) serve up a nonstop smorgasbord of intensely choreographed action, creepy makeup, and graphic ultraviolence. It's sadistic, juvenile, numbing, and--for those who dig this kind of thing--undeniably impressive. With the ever-imposing Ron Perlman as a vampire villain. --Jeff Shannon

Description

Get set for more action, more vampires and more Wesley Snipes in this second monster-hit installment in the Blade franchise.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars different than first but with loads of fun.......2007-07-10

Its hard for sequals to follow up on a great first installment, especially as one as good as Blade. There are two direction to go, which is stick close to the first film, so that the 2nd seems too much like the first, or go in a differect direction, which might take the story too far from the first film. Blade 2 does the latter, which doesn't provide as an exciting and tightly-developed story as the first Blade, but the tons of action of the first film remains, along with a lot of fun and excitement.

In Blade 2, a virus is transforming the vampires into a breed of supervampires, who are tougher, more agressive, and feed off of the normal vampires on a regular basis. The leader of the vampire nation calls in an elite team of vampires known as the blood pack, who's leader is played by the impressive Ron Pearlman (Hellboy, Alien: Resurrection). Among the team, is also a member played by Donnie Yen (Kill Zone, Shanghai Knights, Hero) for all you martial art fans out there. The team forms a very uneasy truce with Blade, in order to have some help defeating the supervampires and to seek out the vampire nation's leader's son - who has been turned into a supervampire too. Whistler returns to the scene, which is a little confusing after the first film, since it appeared he shot himself. However, Blade 2 decides to bring back his character and explains this in the beginning of the film.

Most of the movie is action packed, and great action at that. The story isn't as sharp as the first, because a lot of screentime is devoted to hunting out the supervampires. About 2/3 through though, story gets a bit more exciting and takes some twists and turns until the end. As for the action, overall there is even more this time around, but several scenes overdo the cgi a little, and it is evident and distracting. For fans of Donnie Yen, he has one very cool scene with exceptional choreography, and his character (though without any dialouge) is just bad (in the cool way). Blade is not quite as cool as in the first film, but he's still just downright fun to watch. He has a final fight against the leader's son, which is 3 minutes of one of the better fights I have ever seen. I loved it more than the final fight in the first Blade. This fight is even faster, harder, and longer. It is definetly an edge of your seat fight.

Blade 2 may not take itself quite as seriously as the first Blade, but it is almost more enjoyable in a fun kind of way. Tons of action, plenty of gore, and even some frightening moments make it seem scarier than the first Blade. A hardcore fan may be dissapointed with the direction the sequal took, but someone looking for an enjoyable movie will still love this.

2 out of 5 stars NO WHERE NEAR AS GOOD AS THE FIRST FILM 2 1/2 STARS.......2007-06-25

There is plenty of action in the sequel to the excellent Blade, but it just doesn't hold up to the first film. The sequel does have some cool FX,but the story just seems silly. It is better than some other Marvel movie that have been done though.

4 out of 5 stars Commentary tracks enhance this "Opera of Brutality".......2007-05-08

There's 334 other reviews so I'll skip the movie comments except to say it was fun.

Snipes and Goyer (the writer) have a good track. Snipes explains the rationale of each of the fight scenes and has stories of stunt mishaps.

The Director, Del Toro and the producer Frankfurt have a party on their track. They mock some of Goyer's dialogue and applaud the stuff that worked just right. A lot of fun.

There's even an isolated score track! (Just the music.)

3 out of 5 stars This movie is a comic book; take it or leave it........2007-01-14

Everything about this movie is completely over-the-top. The colors are strong, the kung fu is fast, the lines are cheesy... if you're expecting a serious movie, you're in the wrong place.

The only major complaint I had with this movie was that the CGIs all pretty much looked like what they were, and there's a fight sequence with no people in it, which is lame. I found the first Blade movie more satisfying, for what it was, but there's only so many times you can watch the first movie.

Also, the commentaries with Guillermo del Toro and the cast are really cool.

2 out of 5 stars Wasted Effort.......2007-01-08

Think about how much money was spent on the special effects for this gruesome movie. You know, I've worked in the funeral business where I've seen real-life gore, and trust me, it's not fun to see. I guess I just never understood the demand for lots of gore in films.

Now that doesn't mean you can't make a good movie with gore and stuff in it. Red Dragon is a good movie with lots of gore. Unfortunately, Blade II just isn't a good movie. It's nothing but vampires getting killed over, and over, and over again. The plot never advances beyond vampires being slaughtered for a good hour and thirty minutes. Doesn't matter that it has lost its shock value after the first five killings. I was thinking the concept of horror films was to put characters in new frightening situations that they haven't yet adapted to so the shock value could carry on. I mean, it doesn't take us 80 minutes to figure out that Blade can kill vampires. And man, the effects are disgusting. I'd rather watch the four most boring Dragnet episodes ever back-to-back than go through another viewing of this.

Description

It was in June 1976 that an Air France plane carrying 244 passengers and a crew of 12 on a flight from Athens to Paris was hijacked by terrorists who forced the captain to alter course and eventually land at Uganda's Entebbe Airport. With the tacit approval of President Idi Amin, the Jewish passengers were held hostage and threatened with death if the Israeli government didn't comply with their captor's demand - to release 53 Palestinian so-called freedom fighters held in Israeli prisons. The world held its breath as the hours and minutes to the deadlines set by the terrorists ticked by.

5 out of 5 stars The greatest anti-terrorist action of the 1970s!.......2006-12-01

The 1970s were a very dark time, in regard to the rise of terrorist acts committed by radical-leftist groups and their Islamic cohorts. This outstanding movie portrays a true event, in which Isreal's valorous military forces pulled off one of the greatest commando-raids in history! A passenger plane was hijacked by terrorists affiliated with the Red Army Faction and the Palestine Liberation Organization, a flight from Athens to Tel Aviv. The plane was diverted to the heart of Africa, into the very worst of destinations for that time: Idi Amin's Uganda. Amin, possibly the most mentally unbalanced, and bloodiest dictator ever seen in Africa, was a full collaborator with the PLO and RAF. Typical of such groups, the PLO and RAF threatened innocent civilians as a means of attempting to coerce Isreal into freeing some terrorists from Isreali prisons.
Isreal did not stand for this. They deployed several C-130 transport planes loaded with commandos and paratroops, in one of the most daring resue operations of its kind. We may never again see such a brash operation as this one! The rescue was a success! Sadly, there were some casualties amongst the civilian hostages and Isreali troops, but the number was thankfully small. Those who fell died bravely!
This movie should be more well-known than it currently is, especially in our time! Also, Charles Bronson (God rest his soul) is in this film!

5 out of 5 stars Well Done Account of an Important Historical Event.......2005-09-01

"Raid on Entebbee" was released shortly after are more hastily released version recounting these events came out -- "Victory on Entebbee." It" is hard to say which version is better (I like them both). I suppose this is simply a matter of taste.

This version of the audacious rescue of hostages held when highjackers working for the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine boarded and high-jacked an Air France plane stopped in Athens, enroute to Paris from Tel-Aviv, recounts accurately the events and response of the Israeli government to another example of the outrageous terror war being perpetrated against Israel (and now many other countries). It is fast moving, action packed, and has an excellent musical score. Peter Finch stars as Prime Minister Yitzak Rabin, with Charles Bronson portraying General Dan Shomron.
This version, as the previous one, show the difficult Israel Cabinet deliberations held to decide on a top-secret military raid on the Jewish Sabbath, by expert commandos; a difficult and daring operation carried out over 2500 miles from home, rather than give into terrorist demands. The outcome, of course, is well known, with only one commando killed (the operation commander Jonathan Netanyahu, brother of Prime Minister in waiting Benjamin Netayahu), a very small number of hostages, and several several soldiers under the then dictator of Uganda, Idi Amin". Well done and interesting docu-drama that treads the line between true history and historical fiction. Highly recommended to lift the spirits of anyone looking for an actual historical victory over the terrorists.

3 out of 5 stars Amazing event portrayed in not such an amazing film.......2005-06-22

The raid of Entebbe became famous as a very successful strike against an act of terrorism. Israeli soldiers did an amazing thing when they managed to fly to Uganda and save 100 hostages.

I must admit I am a little bit disappointed with this film. I feel that such an exciting story and outstanding deed could have been portrayed in a much better way.

I feel that the film seldom touches a nerve and that it becomes a little bit dull.

1 out of 5 stars Movie is GREAT! - the DVD is horrible!.......2005-03-14

All I can say is that it is too bad this is how this excellent movie is treated. I highly recommend the movie and have been waiting a long time for it to be released as a DVD. However, the other reviewer is correct, they did a terrible job of recording this movie onto DVD. The quality is worse than a bad reception TV broadcast and scenes have been cut out! The quality of this DVD is as if someone recorded it on VHS from TV and then copied it onto DVDs in their garage! It is truly lousy work. Again, the movie is excellent and if it were to come out in a DVD format made from the original movie reels, with widescreen as an option, I would still buy a copy. Don't waste your money on this one. The VHS might be better, but you'd get just as much satisfaction if you recorded it off of TV!
