Meticulously crafted but also ponderous and predictable, James Cameron's 1989 deep-sea close-encounter epic reaffirms one of the oldest first principles of cinema: everything moves a lot more slowly underwater. Ed Harris and Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio, as formerly married petroleum engineers who still have some "issues" to work out, are drafted to assist a gung-ho Navy SEAL (Michael Biehn) with a top-secret recovery operation: a nuclear sub has been ambushed and sunk, under mysterious circumstances, in some of the deepest waters on earth, and the petro-techies have the only submersible craft capable of diving down that far. Every image and every performance is painstakingly sharp and detailed (and the computerized water creatures are lovely) but the movie's lumbering pace is ultimately lethal. It's the audience that ends up feeling waterlogged. For a guy who likes guns as much as Cameron (his next film after all, was the body-count masterpiece Terminator 2: Judgment Day), it's interesting that the moral balance here is weighted heavily in favor of the can-do engineers; the military types are end-justifies-the-means amoralists, just like the weasely government bureaucrats in Aliens. --David Chute

1 out of 5 stars Great movie...dissapointing dvd.......2007-06-22

I can't tell you how excited i was to find this for 8.99 new at the mall. i also can't tell you how awesome movies look on my 42" lcd hdtv (thats a 16x9 ratio for the uninitiated) and upscaled on my xbox 360. what i can tell you is how dissapointed i am at the treatment this dvd got.

first of all, there is no 5.1 (or dts for that matter)mix, even though it says there is on the back of the box. its only dolby surround. "okay well thats not too big of a deal i said", and i hit play. then came the 2nd and worst thing that could possibly happen...the fox logo came up as the movie started, but at about a 6th the size of my tv. it lasted too long to be anything asthetic and then the movie started.

here's where i get mad. the movie is filmed in a 2:35:1 aspect ratio. (which for the layman, means it appears wider in scope, but at the expense of actual viewing space (ie bigger black bars on a standard tv). now on an hdtv this isnt too big of a deal (especially if the dvd is mastered anamorphically) because its already widescreen, so your black bars at a 2:35 ratio arent so bad (and are smaller). however it appears that the movie was mastered on the dvd in a 4:3 (standard tv size) box, with the bars as "part" of the actual movie.

basically its like someone took a widescreen VHS tape and dubbed it on a dvd. meaning:

(1) the movie looks about 6 times too small on my widescreen tv (its like this little rectangle surrounded by black bars)

(2)this is not actually widescreen and gives it a really bad bootleg look

(3) the resolution and detail of the dvd is absolutely terrible (ie vhs quality)AND i have to zoom the video TWICE to get it to fit on the tv, making the flaws of the already terrible transfer even more apparent.

this upsets me greatly because it is the "Special Edition". whats so special about it? but apparently all of the versions of this movie share the same flaws. the special dvd edition of "Aliens" (also by cameron) its fantastic and has none of these issues i describe to you now. i saw the movie awhile ago and i havent finished the "special" edition yet, but from what im reading from users on amazon, some "special" editions dont even have the extra 28 mins of footage even though they claim to on the dvd.

forgive the pun, but this and all dvd versions of the abyss are simply...abysmal

Even without its original 3-D IMAX presentation, James Cameron's Ghosts of the Abyss is still an eerily elegant tour of history's most infamous shipwreck. Six years after his original journey to the rusting hulk of the Titanic (where he captured footage for his 1997 blockbuster), Cameron returned to the wreckage with actor Bill Paxton, a team of Russian and American scientists, the world's most knowledgeable Titanic historians, and enough state-of-the-art technology to film the most complete and intimate exploration of the ill-fated ship's remains. Astonishing footage, flawless digital animation, and ghostly re-creations of the ship's final hours are seamlessly combined to orient the viewer at an intersection of tragic past and awe-inspiring present, emphasizing more than ever the sheer scale of Titanic's gargantuan construction. Signs of luxury remain, 90 years later, while the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 (occurring here in mid-mission) place this unforgettable journey into resonant, humanitarian perspective. --Jeff Shannon

4 out of 5 stars A fascinating trip to the Titanic.......2007-04-06

What made this so interesting was the march of technology - New was a huge light (requiring another ship) called Medussa that was lowered 12,000 feet over the ship. They also had digital recreations on the wreck of the original structure superimposed...

The bridge (among several areas) came to life when they used this digital recreation.

They also brought 2 remotely piloted robotic cameras named Jake and Elwood (Blues Brothers fans I would assume!) that took you into the interior of the ship.

There was some sadness even today when you saw a woman's still laced shoe and realizing that the body was long gone...

This is one DvD that doesn't stay in the shelf long - I have watched it repeatedly.

And I saw the tie in to Cameron's 1997 movie when I realized that this Russian deep sea exploration ship was the same one they used in the 1997 movie...

5 out of 5 stars Excellent and informative........2006-11-08

Excellent and informative documentary. Underwater filming was beautiful. My daughter loved it.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing footage for the shipwreck that is the TITANIC.......2006-05-31

He and his crew take you to the Grand Staircase, Molly Brown's State Room and other places that have not been seen before. When James Cameron and his crew are exploring the Titanic they end up loosing both of their robots that go inside the ship. They eventully find their robots and return to the surface from exploring the greatest shipwreck of all time!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Ghosts of the Abyss.......2006-03-23

Great Film. The insertion of people walking the decks once again puts the Titanic in the first person.

4 out of 5 stars A nice spiritual successor to Titanic.......2006-03-10

In the recent Titanic SE, James Cameron during the commentary found that many of the sets and things designed for the deep sea exploring at the beginning looked "pretty darn accurate" to the real wreck. With this film we see just how close the actual ship resembles his recreated luxury liner. For those of you who loved the action stuff, look elsewhere. This is purely for people interested in the history and the sinking of the ship.

Bringing along long-time friend and frequent co-star(out of 5 films, he's only not in 2) Bill Paxton, James Cameron goes down to the infamous ship that crashed and sank in 1912: the Titanic. Using advanced robotic technology, they go farther into the wreck than previously shown, including statesrooms, the central staircase and the elevator. An odd bit of mishap happens and they must mount a rescue attempt of one of their beloved ROV(remote-operated vehicles)which just happens to coincide with another historical event.

One thing that plagues this film, as well as subsequent film Aliens of the Deep, is the people doing multiple variations on "that's awesome!". The images are striking enough, we don't need commentary on them and while acting wise he's capable, Bill Paxton is unfortunately not a good "host" for this event. Easily excitable and fidgety, he's, as he puts it, not used to this stuff.

The images are of course the star and the doomed luxury liner has tons of images. While the ship was probably more striking above water, seeing the detail and craftsmanship 12,000 feet down gives it a different kind of look and it's quite something. Especially when they show you what it looked like in real life such as the promenade deck or where the captain's helm was. Also interspersed with the underwater images is CG videomatics to give you a better understanding(which unfortunately aren't that new, they were in Titanic). Giving it a different look is having live actors shot than put over the images to give the titular look.

Out of the 3 deep sea films he's done(others including Expedition: Bismarck and Aliens of the Deep)Ghosts is probably 2nd after Bismarck. The images here are great but Bismarck did a better job at the exploration part but they're all interesting looks at technology and the loss of life that resulted from it.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars TNA is TRUTHFULLY total nonstop action.......2007-08-24

i think tna is one of those things that when people see it they go..."oh thats not wwe, its second rate because its only an hour"...and so on. well i have news for u...tna is much better these days than wwe...and after watching this dvd it seems tna has been better for quite a while...so if u havent seen it actually watch a tna dvd b4 saying its not that good. on this dvd theres so much blood u might wwant those weak of stomach to leave the room, expeccilly during the barbed wire mayham match...which is just as if not more graphic than the terry funk, sabu, shane douglas 3 way dance at hardcore homecoming...which u all should buy also. the match with aj styles and the monster abyss is top notch with aj getting nailed in the head with the cage door, and also the 6 sides of steel with triple x against amw was absolutly brutal and amazing, the 6 man tag with rhino and team 3d vs jeff jarret and amw.., was greta. overall all the matches on this dvd were great and i recommend buying this one

5 out of 5 stars Great dvd.......2007-07-30

While TNA is still a second to WWE for me, they do have some highlights to there shows. This dvd is a must for people who love hardcore wrestling. Abyss seems like a Mankind rip off, but still fun to watch. Monsters Ball with Jeff Hardy doing the dive onto Abyss has to be one of the sweetest wrestling moves ive ever seen. The only downside to this dvd is the Dudley Boyz and Rhino VS Jarrett and AMW. They brawled thru out the building and made it hard to follow the action. They also missed out on some amazing points in the match. When Rhino set Jarrett up on a table on the entrace way, I thought it was going be a friggin sweet gore. No dice and that kind of left a sour taste in my mouth. The Sabu VS Abyss barbwire match was ok but wasnt as good as people say it was. TNA has more wrestling then WWE right now, but I still love WWE. This dvd is a must for fans who love hardcore matches. Check it out!

5 out of 5 stars I'm not going to get into the TNA Vs. WWE debate, because I like both of them........2007-07-27

Even though the WWE is having problems, I like the WWE, and also, I like the new Wrestling company known as...TNA Wrestling. This Dvd is one of the greatest wrestling Dvds out there. I know, because when it comes to Wrestling, there is alot more than bloodshed, and weapons involvement. The matches on this Dvd are fun to watch, because they bring back the old ECW days that made wrestling in the mid 90's very popular to see. The matches in this Dvd are very brutal, including the ones with Sabu, Raven, Rhyno, Abyss, and AJ Styles. Buy this Dvd if you're tired of Vince McMahon's so-called ECW. Highly recommended along with "Bloodsport ECW's Most Violent Matches." Be warned that these Wrestling Dvds are not for the faint of heart, or those who throw up easily.

5 out of 5 stars one of the best wresting dvds out there.......2007-05-05

tna's collection of their most hardcore matches doesn't dissapoint in the least. this is one of the best wrestling dvds i've ever seen, as it combines great hardcore wrestling with some nice high-flying and technical wrestling sprinkled in.

1. raven v. abyss v. monty brown (monster's ball) ~ very short match, but otherwise great. abyss gets powerbombed by raven onto the thumbtacks he brought out (abyss always takes the thumbtack spots it seems), and monty brown wins after pouncing raven through a table. (7/10)

2. america's most wanted v. triple x (six sides of steel) ~ this is absolutely my favorite tag team cage match of all time. all four men bleed, and elix skipper does a sick move, tightrope walking across the top of the cage to perform a hurricanrana onto chris harris. amw win after doing triple x's finishing move onto skipper while christopher daniels was handcuffed to the cage. (9.5/10)

3. abyss v. jeff hardy (falls count anywhere) ~ a decent match between the two, and it made me remember why i still like jeff hardy. he does a nice flip off some structure outside the building onto a table-top abyss. jeff hardy wins, but after the match abyss slams hardy onto some thumbtacks. i've never seen jeff hardy take a thumbtack spot before. (7.5/10)

4. aj styles v. abyss (six sides of steel) ~ awesome match from the beginning, when styles flips out of the cage door onto abyss. aj takes a nasty shot from the cage door. abyss takes out the thumbtacks, but ends up landing in them after aj does a sunset flip powerbomb on him. aj wins after a sytles clash onto the thumbtacks. (8.5/10)

5. raven v. sean waltman(x-pac) (raven's house of fun) ~ weapons abound including kendo sticks and a staple gun. waltman surprised me by putting on a nice hardcore match. some decent table spots during the match. raven wins after throwing waltman onto a fence that breaks sending waltman out of the ring. (7/10)

6. raven v. abyss (dog collar match) ~ this match proves why these two dominate the dvd. some sick table spots are involved, and raven even staples a dollar bill to abyss' head. raven wins by after ddting abyss onto some thumbtacks. (8.5/10)

7. raven and sabu v. jeff jarrett and rhyno ~ not a bad brawl, with raven cutting open jarrett with a pizza cutter at the beginning. sabu shines as usual, and there were some nice chairshots in the match. abyss come out and throws sabu through a table, then jeff hardy comes out and takes out abyss. rhyno and jarrett win after rhyno gores raven through a table as he was about to ddt jarrett. (6.5/10)

8. sabu v. abyss v. rhyno v. jeff hardy (monster's ball 2) ~ a great match with brawling all over the building, some nice table spots including a swanton by hardy and a gore by rhyno. rhyno wins afer doing a piledriver onto hardy off the second rope. (8/10)

9. team 3d(dudley boys) and rhyno v. america's most wanted and jeff jarrett ~ the match began with jarrett and amw spreading out to three sides of the arena, setting the stage for a nice brawl. lots of fighting in the crowd, on the rampways, and elsewhere. some pretty sick spots including bubba powerbombing one of the amw guys onto the floor. team 3d and rhyno win, yet i can't remember how at this time. (7.5/10)

10. sabu v. abyss (barbed wire match) ~ this match was too short, but overall it lived up to it's hype. the ropes were replaced with barbed wire and both men get cut open by the barbed wire (sabu, of course, takes more spots than abyss does). sabu wins by knocking abyss onto a board of barbed wire, putting another board on top of him, and jumping on top. again, too short of a match, but a nice way to end the dvd. (8.5/10)

Thought it was anamorphic! Thank you guys! Now when will we get the anamorphic version?

4 out of 5 stars Non-Anamorphic is ok for the Abyss .......2007-07-17

James Cameron filmed The Abyss in 4:3. The widescreen editions are actually the versions that have parts of the video action cut from frame to frame. I am a major proponent of widescreen, and know that The Abyss as well as a handful of others, including The Shining, actually have more video in the 4:3 editions than the widescreen edition.

1 out of 5 stars If only I had read these posts..........2007-07-09

Bought this believing it would be recorded correctly. They just took the 2003 non-anamorphic DVD and put a cardboard with a hologram on top that says 2007, that's all. Once opened, you cannot return these. I'll throw it away I guess... is there a phone number to complain? Can't find one...

1 out of 5 stars Give me a break.......2007-06-20

Non-anamorphic widescreen and no 5.1 dolby digital sound...what a joke.

1 out of 5 stars Unbelievable!.......2007-06-06

Dazed and confused!!!!! I feel like I am in the Abyss!!!!! What happened to the Anamorphic? The box cover even states anamorphic? What is Fox up to? I was so excited that all of the advertising for this edition stated anamorphic, but I was left so violated when I discovered that I had yet spent more money for the same version that I had on the 5 star edition. Fox please have someone check this stuff before you fool the public!

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Abyss finally gets the DVD he deserves..........2007-06-30

I was always a fan of Abyss, many considered him the Kane or Mankind of TNA which I whole-heartedly agreed with. He has had some matches that Cactus Jack and Sabu would have cringed at, including matches with Sabu himself that are completely unforgettable. This is one DVD that deserves your attention. Matches include:

Destination X 2005
Full Metal Mayhem Match:
This was against Jeff Hardy and it was a wild brawl all over the building. Jeff Hardy at one point climbs a metal structure outside of the building and gives a Swanton Bomb to Abyss through two tables. They fight back in the ring and continue to beat each other up with chairs, ladders, chains, and more tables. Abyss at one point powerbombs Jeff through a table from the top rope! At the end of the match Abyss throws Jeff onto a pile of tacks after the match was over! 8/10

Lockdown 2005
Six Sides of Steel Cage Match:
This was against Aj Styles and this was another wild brawl. Abyss at one point slams the cage door against Aj's head in a horrific spot! They continue to fight and AJ gives a sunset flip off the cage wall to Abyss right onto a pile of tacks! They continue to fight and Aj gets the win. 10/10

Bound for Glory 2005
Monsters Ball Match #2:
This is one of the best matches on the disk set. This included sabu, rhino, Abyss, and Jeff Hardy. Highlights include Jeff Hardy giving a massive swanton bomb to Abyss through two tables off the top of the titantron in a fantastic moment. Many tables and weapons were used, rhino even gored Abyss through a table in an impressive spot. Sabut gets put through a table and rhino gets the win after giving a sort of piledriver move to jeff hardy off the top rope. 10/10

Turning Point 2005
Barbed Wire Massacre:
Ok, let me just say this, this was an AWESOME match! Sabu and Abyss fought in a ring with barbed wire as ring ropes and anything you could think of was wrapped in barbed wire surrounding the ring. Highlights include Abyss throwing Sabu into the wire and then missing a charge and diving right into the wire himself! Too many sick spots to name but Sabu gets the win after putting abyss in the middle of two boards of barbed wire and jumping right on top of abyss to win the match! 10/10

Against All Odds 06
Falls Count Anywhere Match:
This was against Rhino and they indeed take it all over the building. Highlights include Abyss throwing Rhino through a couple of tables in the ring and then Rhino managed to fight back and they take it into the stands. The end comes when Rhino gores Abyss of the stands and Abyss falls through a set of tables he himself set up. great ending. 8.5/10

Lockdown 2006
Six sides of steel match:
This was against Christian Cage. A back and forth match and Christian at one point gives a frog splash to Abyss off the top of the cage! Two bags of tacks were used and Abyss slams christian in the tacks and then uses his chain to choke Christian out. However christian gets the win and retains his World Heavyweight title. 9/10

Bound for Glory 2006
Monster's Ball #3:
This included Abyss, Spike Dudley, Raven, and Samoa Joe. They brawled all over the ring and yes a lot of weapons were used in this match. Jake "the snake" Roberts was the ring enforcer/ref guy and he included a lot of moments himself. At one point Spike Dudley fell off a edge of the titantron and fell over 10 feet to the floor itself! pretty good match. 8.5/10

Genesis 2006
This was for the World Heavyweight Championship and it was against Sting. They included some nasty bumps, including Sting getting slammed onto thumbtacks almost like Ric Flair did a few months previous, not as impressive as flairs but still will make you cringe. Sting then goes crazy and beats up Abyss and throws him off the stage onto two boards that were set up wrapped in barbed wire! Abyss wins the title in a disqualification. 9/10

Extras include:

footage of Abyss' invasion of Christian Cage's home where he almost drowned christian in his swimming pool.

a photo gallery including pictures of "Chris...the person behind the character Abyss"

Abyss' TNA debut in a handicap match

and his story of the history with James Mitchel

this is worth it if you want to see no holds barred wrestling with some death defying moments, this is recommended...

4 out of 5 stars Time To Click DOOMSDAY!!!.......2007-06-27

Abyss is the TNA's resident hardcore character like how previous federations has Cactus Jack, Sabu, and Abdullah The Butcher in which whenever he's in the ring, you can expect hardcore violence & putting his body on the line more than anything else. Viewer Discretion Is Advised on this DVD since it contains various bloody brawls featuring the use of thumbtacks & barbed wire amongst other weapons.

Destination X 2005: Full Metal Mayhem vs. "The Charismatic Enigma" Jeff Hardy - They went all over the building & outside using tables, ladders, and (of course) thumbtacks. Like I said, Hardy is great at these weapons matches.
(Also available on "Best Of The Bloodiest Brawls" & "Best Of Jeff Hardy")

Lockdown 2005: Six Sides of Steel Cage Match vs. "The Phenomenal" AJ Styles - This match is just awesome. It's not really a bloody massacre but a great storytelling of "the big unstoppable monster vs. the little guy who never gives up."
(Also available on "Best Of The Bloodiest Brawls" & "Best Of A.J. Styles 2")

Bound For Glory 2005: Monster's Ball 2 vs. "The Homicidal, Genocidal, Suicidal" Sabu vs. "The Charismatic Enigma" Jeff Hardy vs. "The War Machine" Rhino - This match goes all over the place, weapons galore, and tons of spots. Look out for Jeff Hardy's dive off the top of the stage onto the floor thought a table.
(Also available on "Best Of The Bloodiest Brawls")

Turning Point 2005: Barbed Wire Massacre vs. "The Homicidal, Genocidal, Suicidal" Sabu - This match was just sick as you see moments like Sabu getting dropped on his neck into the barbed wire and Abyss squished inbetween two barbed wire boards. It's not as distubring as Sabu's last two barbed wire matches (Hardcore Homecoming & vs. Terry Funk) but it still leaves an impression.
(Also available on "Best Of The Bloodiest Brawls")

Against All Odds 2006: Falls Count Anywhere vs. Rhino - They took it back to the old ECW hardcore days in this match as it was non-stop brawling in the ring & through the area with even a gore that Abyss took from the top of the bleachers through tables that is something to see.

Lockdown 2006: Six Sides Of Steel Cage Match vs. NWA Champion Christian Cage - This was a brutal match very similiar to the match last year Abyss had with Styles but Christian dished out the punishment as much as he took it. This wasn't the typical Abyss match with the thumbtack spots so that made this even more special. Again, just another great match.

Bound For Glory 2006: Monster's Ball vs. Samoa Joe vs. Brother Runt (Spike Dudley) vs. Raven - This was a step below last years match but that doesn't mean it wasn't good as it was a good four way brawl with even Jake "The Snake" Roberts getting involved from time to time, however if your looking for the Samoa Joe "wrestling clinic" that he has a reputation for, you won't find it in this match.

Genesis 2006: vs. NWA Champion Sting - I was expecting to see Sting to do his usual stops throughout this match but Sting stepped it up in this match the way he should have at Bound For Glory. There was a great mix of brawling & in the ring action before it went hardcore with Sting even landing shirtless on tacks harder & stiffer than than Ric Flair got it in ECW months earlier. However, the ending came when Sting absolutely loses his mind & beats Abyss down, hangs him & beats him with his bat before putting him through barbed-wire boards. Sting ended up getting disqualified & Abyss wins the NWA Title. The end is very creative because that's a rule that has been around since TNA started up but people forgot about it because alot of the TNA title matches in recent years don't end with the champions getting disqualified or counted out.

Also on here would be a look at the story behind the Abyss' past from Christian Cage and Tomko revealing their "secret", the wars between Sting and James Mitchell, all the way to Abyss' return from being beaten down by Christian Cage & others.

DVD extras will be footage of Abyss' invasion of Christian Cage's home, photo gallery including pictures of Chris...the person behind the character Abyss, and Abyss TNA debut in a handicap match.

The main problem with this DVD set is the same exact problem that TNA has been having with their previous non-PPV DVD releases...they keep reusing the same matches. The first two matches are on at 2 other non-PPV DVD sets and four of these matches were on the "Best Of The Bloodiest Brawls" DVD from a year ago. Besides that little flaw, this is going to be a great set for those who were fans of hardcore "weapons" wrestling. I recommend if you aren't a heavy collector of TNA DVD's.

5 out of 5 stars A MUST have for your DVD collection!.......2007-09-13

This is a great movie. I'd already owned it as VHS and have been purchasing all my old favorites in DVD...and this was one I had to have.
Plenty of action....suspense and excitement. It really is one you'll enjoy time and time again.

5 out of 5 stars A Science Fiction Classic.......2007-09-05

A definite sci-fi classic. A masterpiee through and through. One of James Cameron's best. An underwater tale that does not disappoint.

Highly recommended, but if you can, catch the Two Disc set. the extras are magnificient.

WHEN I GOT THIS CD SET I WAS EXTREMELY PLEASED WITH IT. THE SHIPPING TOOK NO TIME AT ALL AND ARRIVED FASTER THAN I EXPECTED. THE MOVIE CD WAS GREAT AND I LOVED THE ADDED MATERIAL. THE BONUS CD WAS A LITTLE CONFUSING THOUGH. BUT ALL IN ALL I WOULD RECOMEND THIS TO ALL.

3 out of 5 stars Don't bother with this version.......2005-06-22

The Abyss is a great movie and I definitely recommend checking it out. However if you are going to get it you might as well get the Special Edition or the Double Digipack versions of the DVD. This one just has the theatrical release of the movie. That's all. You don't get both versions of the film, including the extended version with 20+ minutes of additional footage (well worth sitting through) nor the incredibly compelling documentaries and extras that are truly worth having.

Considering the low price of the Special Edition there is absolutely no reason why you should go for this non-extras, non-extented edition format. Do yourself a favor and trade up.

4 out of 5 stars Simple title - complex movie.......2004-07-28

All the elements are there to make this a fun "sit on the edge of your seat" movie. You have a nuclear sub accident that just gets worse as it goes you have conflict between authority types and free wheelers. There is a love interest (attraction at a distance). Will he make it or is it out of time or out of air or out of distance maybe out of patients. Who knows?

Aside from the story there a re great effects and many panoramic scenes. There are lots of bubbles, an abyss and maybe some Ruskies. If you like all those submarine movies this fits in well. Again it is the people action and reaction that make the movie. Don't wait for some slam-bang surprise to appear out of no ware or you will have misses the story.

This is one of those movies that have to grow on you and then you will watch it again.

    3 out of 5 stars Decent PPV.......2007-08-08

This dvd had an amazing main event, Cage VS Joe but the rest of the PPV was alright. Sting VS Abyss was probably the second best match on the card but the ending was a bit of a stretch. I think scaffold matches are boring, so Rhino VS Styles really wasnt all that great for me. Angle and Steiner is an average match that could have been seen in WWE a few years back, expect for the six sided ring. Ghetto Brawl was a going alright until the end when all the "gang" members entered and started to brawl. The bonus matches are great too.

5 out of 5 stars Great Pay Per View!.......2007-08-03

I like both the WWE and TNA. This Dvd of "Destination X is the greatest Pay Per View that has ever graced this earth. The matches on this Dvd are a blast to watch, including the Ghetto Brawl match which, to me sounds crazy and fun. The elevation X match was TNA's version of the Latter match. The Elevation X match is the creepiest match ever in the history of Pro Wrestling. Can all of you fans imagine having two guys fighting each other on that menacing steel platform structure? That's exactly what happened when Rhyno and AJ Styles did when they fought on top of that structure. Can you also imagine having the person you're fighting take that death defying drop to the ring floor? Ouch! That's exactly what happened when AJ Styles took that drop and had to be carried out on a Stretcher. Now, I know what they mean when they tell me not to try the stuff that Pro Wrestlers do at home. I also liked the Last Rites match between Sting and Abyss. I can't even imagine being lowered into that casket and having it closed shut on you, but that's the way it goes. This match reminds me of the Casket matches in the WWE, but with a twist. I hope it's not Sting and Abyss's final exam, because I'd like to see them go at it again and again. If any of you fans like this, then this Dvd is for you. This Dvd is the best. Highly recommended.

However, I have to agree that TNA needs to stop bringing in old wrestlers to wrestle. Instead, they need to bring in the old wrestlers to train the new wrestlers in TNA.

    4 out of 5 stars Destination X-Citement.......2007-07-04

This was a pretty solid ppv. I'm glad I bought this one beause it put a smile back on my face after I watched wwe's One Night Stand ppv, which was awful at best. About two matches at the most were mediocre at best. And the title matches were great.

    Ghetto Brawl Match
    LAX vs. Team 3D
A good opener. A brawl all over the arena. Up the stands, through the stands, back to the ring. Usin' weapons. Then some fat guy trys to clean house. Gets beat up later and an all out gang fight breaks loose. And its all legal. A pretty good fight with a decent end. 4/5

    Mixed Tag Bullrope Match
James Storm & Jackie Moore(Jacqueline from WWE) vs. Petey Williams & Gail Kim
I haven't seen a bullrope match that I liked enough to see twice yet. And this is no exception. Nothing special here at all. The two men were tied to each other and the women were tied to each other. If this match had lasted any longer than what it did I would have died. 2/5

    X division match
    Senshi vs. Austin Starr
A pretty solid match with a stupid stipulation. A submission match that can only be won by using the Chicken Wing Crossface. So now you knew whatever happened. The outcome was going to be decided by this move. Still a few high spots and lots of counters. I also wish Austin Starr loses that dumba55 gimmick. 3.5/5

    This is the match thats not on the card. Christy Hemme comes to the ring to continue her b*tchin' about womens unfair treatment in the businees then VKM appears and cuts her off before she can say more than a few words. Kip James gets on her, and to me his mic skills are just corny. This results in Hemme introducing her tag team to defend her. Which sets up;

    VKM vs. The Heartbreakers
I'm not sure but I think these are the same h0m0's that called themselves the Hearthrobs in wwe. In any case their gimmick is so gay, that the chicks stuck their noses up. I don't like VKM but I'm happy they basically destroyed these two. A pretty decent match even though I didn't care for either team. Pretty solid wrestling match with minimum interference. 3.5/5

This is when the ppv picks up and starts to feel worth the money.

X Division Title match; 2 out of 3 Falls
    Chris Sabin vs. Jerry Lynn
For a guy in his early 40's. Jerry Lynn moves like a cat. All of the talk about the ring rust, I damn sure didn't see it. The falls weren't very swift, and they put on a good show. Lots of counters, top rope and high impact moves. And quit a few near falls. The ending was kind of weak, but the after math definitly set up somethin' sweet for future storylines. I liked this match. 5/5

    Elevation X Match
    AJ Styles vs. Rhyno
The rules of this match is the first person to fall of a 20 foot scaffold loses. So, I didn't have high hopes for this match at all. I just hoped Rhyno could ground AJ for a while and keep him from climbing up which he did. Still nothing special about this match at all except the suspense of how bad someones going to crash to the ring. I didn't care for this one too much. 2.5/5

    Grudge Match
    Kurt Angle vs. Scott Steiner
I thought this match was going to suck. Scott Steiner is so big he can barely move. To include he doesn't have too many moves anymore. The crowd was barely into this one. Thank god it wasn't too long. Some brawling, a little blood and some high impact slams. I thought Scott Steiner broke Angle's neck after executing his own move on him. 4.5/5

    Last Rites Match
    Sting vs. Abyss
This is TNA's version of the casket match. It is a casket match. Just with a couple of twist. I am getting a bit tired of this feud. This is one of their better matches, but its gettin old to me. The crowd even chanted boring a few times. Sting takes a sick shot to the head that opens the he11 out of him. To include a sick chokeslam also. Both guys got in some good offense. A decent match with a decent finish. 3.5/5

    World Heavyweight Title
    Christian Cage vs. Samoa Joe
The match of the night. This was one damn good match. Samoa Joe is long overdue to headline ppv's. I can't think of a bad match featuring him yet. Near falls, counters and back to back to back etc, etc, submission holds. I was like yo, when is he going to stop. Good match and I did like the way the ending was pulled off. 5/5

Overall a very solid ppv. I am happy with this purchase and if you want to see some good wrestling. This is the ppv to get. I don't think its TNA's best, but from the ones I seen its up there.

5 out of 5 stars TNA Best PPV of '07...so far........2007-07-01

Ive seen every TNA Pay Per Views, and this is one of my favorites. The card didnt seem too strong, but as usual TNA surprises and delivers. I used to be a long time WWE and TNA fan, but after this PPV put the final nail in WWE's coffin, I will never again buy a WWE PPV as they have all been disappointing lately. Any company that tries to push a douche, like John Cena, and ruins what ECW once used to be, needs, and already is, slowly being put to rest. Its sad cause Ive been watching WWE since 1988, but they've gone downhill more then ever, and its time for their legacy to die.

X DIVISION MATCH: Senshi vs. Austin Starr (9 out of 10)
I was not surprised at how good this match was, two amazing, former ROH wrestlers in a classic X Division match.

GHETTO BRAWL MATCH: The Latin American Xchange vs. Team 3D
    (7.5 out of 10)
This match was pretty good, I dont normally like brawl style matches. But these guys are the best brawlers out there, so it was alright.

X DIVISION CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH: Chris Sabin vs. Jerry Lynn (8 out of 10)
Lynn has finally shaken off the ring rust from being out of the game for so long, and was able to put on a good show with Sabin.

GRUDGE MATCH: Kurt Angle vs. Scott Steiner (8.5 out of 10)
WOW! I was very surprised with this one. Ive always thought Steiner was very boring, but he and Angle really put on a show. Steiner is on his second run in TNA and has been very impressive since his return. This is the first of Steiners matches, where I was actually disappointed that it ended too early, and that is the only flaw in this match. I would have rated it higher if it was just a bit longer.

LAST RITES MATCH: Sting vs. Abyss (8.5 out of 10)
Excellent match, would be a 9.5 out of 10, if the set wasnt so cheesy. Sting is another wrestler that has really improved after moving to TNA. This match was great, lots of action, some great bumps. The whole set they put up for the match was just dumb and made me laugh a bit, on the plus side though Abyss and Sting destroy the set during the match.

ELEVATION X MATCH: Rhino vs. AJ Styles (7.5 out of 10)
I liked this match, I just wasnt too impressed with the concept of elevation X. Ive never been a fan of scaffold matches, because they are usually very quick and have only one short but big bump at the end. This is the best scoffold match I've ever seen though, AJ and Rhino manage too keep the match interesting with good use of the scaffold.

    NWA WORLD HEAVYWEIGHT TITLE MATCH:
Christina Cage vs. Samoa Joe (10 out of 10)
WHAT THE F*CK!!! This match just seemed kinda thrown together, and ended up being an instant match of the year candidate. These wrestlers are both amazing, but there wasnt alot of hype during the weekly shows, and there styles just didnt seem to mesh well, so I wasnt expecting much. Also this match started at about 2.5 hours into the PPV, most PPVs end at about 2.75 hours, so I was expecting a short match with some kind of bogus interference ending. How wrong I was. This match took up the rest of the time slot, 30 minute match. Even though the build up for the match on the weekly shows was weak, when these two locked eyes all the excellent ring psychology began to show. Cage and Joe mixed it up so well. After the first 5 minutes I was on the edge of my seat. The crowd was on their feet the whole time, yelling "This Is Awesome!" This is a must see match for any true pro wrestling fan.

If you are a fan of pro wrestling I recommend this DVD. If you are a fan TNA wrestling, this is a MUST own.
