Though it bears little resemblance to the original 1969 thriller starring Michael Caine, the 2003 remake of The Italian Job stands on its own as a caper comedy that's well above average. The title's a misnomer--this time it's actually a Los Angeles job--but the action's just as exciting as it propels a breezy tale of honor and dishonor among competing thieves. Inheriting Caine's role as ace heist-planner Charlie Croker, Mark Wahlberg plays straight-man to a well-cast team of accomplices, including Mos Def, Jason Statham, and scene-stealer Seth Green in a variation of the role originally played by Noel Coward. As the daughter of Croker's ill-fated mentor (Donald Sutherland), Charlize Theron is recruited to double-cross a double-crosser (Edward Norton in oily villain mode), and once again, speedily versatile Mini Coopers play a pivotal role in director F. Gary Gray's exhilarating car-chase climax. It's perhaps the greatest product placement in movie history, and just as fun the second time around. --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars Great movie!.......2007-08-01

The Italian Job is an awesome movie! It's action-packed & is very clever. I had a copy of the movie, but the disc got scratched, so I bought another copy to replace it. It's one of the few movies you won't get tired of watching, even though you already know what's going to happen.

4 out of 5 stars Fun stuff!.......2007-07-15

Incredible special effects that were done without benefit of CGI. Just really good escapist fare. I highly recommend it!

3 out of 5 stars A classic, but..........2007-06-23

I love this movie, I had it on DVD and I got it on HD DVD recently. My only gripe is the quality of the video transfer. There is a lot of graining and artifact noise, especially on dark scenes. The blacks on the DVD version look better than the HD DVD version's blacks...

4 out of 5 stars Good Cast-Good Movie, BRING ON THE SEQUEL!.......2007-06-15

The Italian Job brings to the screen the story of a group of thieves bent on revenge on one of their own who betrayed them by murdering their leader and running off with the gold.
Mark Wahlberg, Donald Sunderland, Edward Norton, Charlize Theron, Seth Green, and the rest of this AMAZING cast, have outdone themselves with their performances, which are commendable to say the least. All the actors, without exceptions, give it their 100% and it really shows! Very well written and very well presented, the movie is without a doubt guaranteed to provide more than just a few thrills, not to mention a few laughs.
The setting, the plot, the dialogues, the humor, and the music are all wonderful!
In short, The Italian Job is a movie definitely worth watching and one to seriously consider adding to your movie collection!

4 out of 5 stars The Italian Review.......2007-06-03

I live right around the corner from a Mini Coop dealership and I'm an Italian-American, so I thought it fitting that I finally rented this movie. It's a remake of the 1969 original starring Michael Caine. Whereas that film took place in Italy, the remake stays there only for the introduction and then swiftly moves to California.

I love heist films. Like Ocean's Eleven or Heat, it's all about the cast. You can see a pattern in the characters:

THE WHEELMAN: This is the guy who mans the getaway vehicle, be it helicopter, jet, or car. Handsome Rob (Jason Statham, my favorite action hero) plays a decidedly scrappy, suave wheelman. This also happens to be almost the exact character from The Transporter. Hopefully, Statham will move beyond this type of character, but it's a testament to action tropes that he can actually be typecast as "the wheelman."

THE TECH: This guy is almost always a nerd and usually the comic relief. Lyle (Seth Green) nails this role and actually steals the show with his jokes. One ad-libbed sequence of Lyle mocking Handsome Rob is the funniest part of the movie. Of course, the challenge with this sort of character is that he needs to be able to pull off seemingly magical feats of technological wizardry without overshadowing the expertise involved. When Lyle manages to take control of the entire traffic system, you really have to wonder if he couldn't be better off striking out on his own. He's almost too good for the movie.

THE DEMOLITIONIST: The demolitionist's job is to blow things up. Sometimes he's a homicidal maniac, other times he's cool and collected. Left Ear (Mos Def) is a cool customer. And he doesn't like dogs. He gives Lyle competition for the funniest line in the movie:

Left Ear: This dude got dogs. I don't do dogs... I had a real bad experience, man.
Charlie Croker: What happened?
Left Ear: I had. A bad. Experience.

THE OLD MAN: You've seen this guy before. He's probably the former leader of the group. He's seen too much, been around the block too many times, and he knows his days are numbered. He just wants one last, big heist so he can retire forever. He almost always dies in the film. That pretty much sums up John Bridger (Donald Sutherland).

THE HOT CHICK: A recent invention, the hot chick's purpose is to keep men interested. She can have a variety of roles (tech, wheel-err-woman, demolitionist). Sometimes she has her own unique set of skills as safecracker. That's John's daughter, Stella (Charlize Theron), who competes admirably in the sea of testosterone.

THE LEADER: Handsome, smart, a safecracker himself, this guy is the one who pulls off a sneaky job right under the bad guys' noses. Unfortunately, Charlie Croker (Mark Wahlberg) is more narrator than anything else. He seems to have very little to do, and that's a shame, because Wahlberg's talented enough to do much more.

The villain is Steve (Edward Norton) a thief turned bad. He knows all of our protagonists' tricks, so he knows how to counter them. And since he stole the gold from the original Italian Job, he's the perfect foil. Norton plays him with just the right amount of shifty-eyed sleaze.

The Italian Job has lots of cool car chases, lots of near misses, and a lot of twists and turns (literally and figuratively) that make it a brisk, entertaining movie. You get quickly caught up in the machinations of the characters, which allows the film to get away with a lot of unbelievable nonsense. But who cares? From the funky flashbacks to the quippy asides, it's clear that Italian Job doesn't take itself too seriously.

Although it's more Job than Italian, the Italian Job is still a fun ride.

By following up their debut thriller Bound with the 1999 box-office smash The Matrix, the codirecting Wachowski brothers--Andy and Larry--annihilated any suggestion of a sophomore jinx, crafting one of the most exhilarating sci-fi/action movies of the 1990s. Set in the not too distant future in an insipid, characterless city, we find a young man named Neo (Keanu Reeves). A software techie by day and a computer hacker by night, he sits alone at home by his monitor, waiting for a sign, a signal--from what or whom he doesn't know--until one night, a mysterious woman named Trinity (Carrie-Anne Moss) seeks him out and introduces him to that faceless character he has been waiting for: Morpheus (Laurence Fishburne). A messiah of sorts, Morpheus presents Neo with the truth about his world by shedding light on the dark secrets that have troubled him for so long: "You've felt it your entire life, that there's something wrong with the world. You don't know what it is, but it's there, like a splinter in your mind, driving you mad." Ultimately, Morpheus illustrates to Neo what the Matrix is--a reality beyond reality that controls all of their lives, in a way that Neo can barely comprehend.

Neo thus embarks on an adventure that is both terrifying and enthralling. Pitted against an enemy that transcends human concepts of evil, Morpheus and his team must train Neo to believe that he is the chosen champion of their fight. With mind-boggling, technically innovative special effects and a thought-provoking script that owes a debt of inspiration to the legacy of cyberpunk fiction, this is much more than an out-and-out action yarn; it's a thinking man's journey into the realm of futuristic fantasy, a dreamscape full of eye candy that will satisfy sci-fi, kung fu, action, and adventure fans alike. Although the film is headlined by Reeves and Fishburne--who both turn in fine performances--much of the fun and excitement should be attributed to Moss, who flawlessly mixes vulnerability with immense strength, making other contemporary female heroines look timid by comparison. And if we were going to cast a vote for most dastardly movie villain of 1999, it would have to go to Hugo Weaving, who plays the feckless, semipsychotic Agent Smith with panache and edginess. As the film's box-office profits soared, the Wachowski brothers announced that The Matrix is merely the first chapter in a cinematically dazzling franchise--a chapter that is arguably superior to the other sci-fi smash of 1999 (you know... the one starring Jar Jar Binks). --Jeremy Storey

1 out of 5 stars Reeves killed it for me.......2007-09-05

I believe that if someone like Tom Cruise or Denzel Washington was the star then this would have been more compelling but Keanu Reeves is such a horrible actor and so painful to watch that it killed this movie for me.

Following it was difficult. The concept was good and Laurence Fishburne was fantastic but Reeves was as bad as he always is. Why does this man continue to get work...???

5 out of 5 stars Add to your collection.......2007-08-26

This is one of my favorite movies. The sequel's didn't come close. Keanu Reeves plays Neo who find out that the world we live in isn't what we think. The movie makes you think about the world we live in today.

5 out of 5 stars "buckle up Dorothy...'.......2007-08-17

Seen it in 1999 when it first debuted on the big screen. Couldn't take it out of my head for a week or so. Since then I rewatched it perhaps a dozen times or so. I know the dialogue, I know what happens next all the way to the end, but I still watch it.

This is escapism of the cleverest sort. Incredibly stylized, designed, almost perfect pacing, witty and yet simple symbolic dialogue...
After the first viewing I'd give it a perfect score. After subsequent viewings you feel that the action sequences really hold back some of the intellectual potential of this film.

However, the original ideas presented and the way in which they are presented is very very nice.

My one gripe with the plot... Why do machines need human bodies for energy? Their technical intelligence is much greater than humans' so why not just build fusion reactors?
It would be much more believable if the reason were that machines were conducting an experiment, investigation of human behavior, studying their creators in order to answer questions about their own existence. That purpose was also suggested in the sequels.

Despite the flaws I'm gonna stand by the first viewing. 5 stars

[as strange as it may sound I actually thought at the beginning that Morpheus and the rest are the bad guys and agents are good, with the whole "...he is considered by many authorities to be the most dangerous man alive..." line suggesting he's a terrorist or something of that kind. guess I'm really easy to brain wash LOL. I wasn't sure up to the 'choosing-a-pill/unplugging' sequence, why would a terrorist ask you to choose a stupid pill? LOL]

3 out of 5 stars MST3K Fans Rejoice -- Rifftrax is Here!.......2007-08-09

In Earth's dirty, dystopian future, one in which every person alive is kept in a dark, moist pod and fed misinformation (kind of like Manhattan, only the odors are less pungent), only one man can save us - and that man is Johnny Utah. Wait, no - Johnny Mnemonic. Hold on, that's not it. It's some kind of car name...uh, Horizon, um....Omni. Ram Charger - No, Neo. That's it. Neo. Led by the enterprising Morpheus, and the hot-erprising Trinity, Neo learns his fate from the Oracle, a corpulent, crusty, chain-smoking broad who is likely to put you off Oracles forever. What is the Matrix? It's a laugh-a-minute RiffTrax with Mike Nelson and Kevin Murphy, that's what.

5 out of 5 stars You are kidding!.......2007-08-08

Like this needs another review. This is one of the best SiFi movies ever produced and no one who claims to know SiFi should have missed it. If you have never seen it, then buy it. You do not need to rent this movie, as that would be a waste of money. Go straight to the counter and make the purchase. It is so overwhelming that you should put it on a shelf and only break it out on special occasions. This is the type of movie that sticks in your mind.

The plan was flawless. The execution was perfect. Charlie Croker pulled off the crime of a lifetime. The one thing that, he didn't plan on was being double-crossed. Now he wants more than the job's payoff...he wants payback. Mark Wahlberg is electrifying as Croker in this "fast and furious action-adventure."* Along with a drop-dead gorgeous safecracker (Charlize Theron), Croker and his team take off to re-steal the loot and end up in a pulse-pounding, pedal-to-the-metal chase that careens up, down, above and below the streets of Los Angeles. With an ensemble all-star cast that also includes Edward Norton, Seth Green, Jason Statham, Mos Def, Franky G and Donald Sutherland, The Italian Job is "Hot!"

3 out of 5 stars for the blu-ray not the movie.......2007-08-03

I've already given this movie a 4 star rating with the regular DVD review so the 3 star is for the blu-ray transfer. This is probly the worst movie I've seen on blu-ray so far that was made in the past 10 years. The video is only slightly, slightly better than DVD and thats just becouse the colors are a tad bit more vibrant. The sound is standard 5.1,no uncompressed or TruHD.Maybe if this is the first time your buying this movie get the blu-ray but if you have the DVD I would suggest stay with that.

Hi, everybody i saw the movie with my girlfriend and it was perfect,
We love the story and the color of the minis stunning.

We recomended this movie by far.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent movie.......2007-07-01

I love this movie and I really don't know why so many people are complaining about the quality of the transfer. I thought it was quite good. Not perfect, but good. Much better than the standard def DVD upscaled.

1 out of 5 stars Great Movie, lousy transfer........2007-06-23

I have this movie on regular DVD and the quality far exceeds the Blu-ray version. As another reviewer wrote, I have so much noise and a line through the center of the screen, that the movie is not watchable. These things should be recalled.

2 out of 5 stars Great Movie, Terrible Video Quality.......2007-06-17

Regular DVD in upscale player is better than Blu-ray. For some reason there are a significant amount of artifacts to the point of a distracting line in mid-screen. If you haven't trashed your regular/upscale DVD player, then buy the regular DVD and save some money. Don't get me wrong, the movie itself is fantastic...just the quality of its current Blu-ray version is sub-par. I'd return it, if I could.

All I will say is this film looks and sounds brilliant on blu ray. A must for your collection.

5 out of 5 stars A SUPERB BLU-RAY EXPERIENCE.......2007-04-11

Although I have seen the movie years ago when it was on cinemas across the world and of course on dvd several times, I bought the blu-ray version in order to see the difference. I must admit that the experience was incredible and during the scenes that John Travolta was firing to the FBI agents and Hugh Jackman was driving, it was like that I have been on the street, in the middle of the crossfire.

If you want to experience the blu-ray difference, I strictly recommend the movie. That's how you see the development from DVD to Blu-Ray.

4 out of 5 stars wow......wwwwow.......2007-03-23

They did a good job cleaning this movie to make it look so sharp on HD. So sharp I caught myself rewinding Halle Berry's scene a few times before continuing the movie.

Swordfish is a superficial movie, so let's address the superficial facts: Halle Berry was well paid to bare her breasts in this gratuitous cyber-action thriller, and while Berry's many fans will enjoy a cheap drool at the actress's expense, her brief topless scene doesn't justify this insipid parade of glossy violence from the director of 2000's Gone in 60 Seconds. Add yet another notch in John Travolta's bad-movie belt, and you've got Hollywood bankruptcy in full blossom. Go ahead, marvel at director Dominic Sena's biggest money shot--a 360-degree pan as a robbery hostage is blown to bits by a bomb that pelts a surrounding SWAT squad with deadly ball bearings.

The plot, as if it matters: Travolta's a slick, self-appointed antiterrorist who recruits a top-flight computer hacker (Hugh Jackman) to transfer a $9.5 billion government slush fund into a cluster of secret accounts. Berry's the curvaceous bait who lures Jackman into the scheme; Don Cheadle's an FBI agent hot on their tails; and an obligatory subplot turns Jackman's daughter (Camryn Grimes) into an innocent bargaining chip. By the time a hostage transport bus is airlifted in the film's not-so-thrilling climax, Swordfish will hold your passive attention or put you to sleep--it all depends on your tolerance for Sena's brand of derivative bloodlust. It's pornography of a sort, and efficiently mechanical, but you can bet good money that Berry and her costars didn't cash their paychecks proudly. --Jeff Shannon

3 out of 5 stars Barry and Jackman are better in the X-Men.......2007-09-10

This is a disturbing violent film with John Travolta playing a psychopathic control freak. Halle Barry is his sidekick with Hugh Jackman as the out of work computer expert who is hired to hack into a computer. The plot starts out great and the sub-plot of Stanley wanting to get custody of his daughter softens up the story but it is just too violent. Travolta is just too sweet in that Vinny Barbarino way that makes him unbelievable as a career crimminal.

5 out of 5 stars Unconventional.......2007-07-25

in this movie the good guy wins, the bad guy wins, the hostages blow up, the police lose and you're never sure how you're suposed to feel. i like when a movie doest fit the mold of good guy takes out bad guy, people saved, everyone celebrates... this movie has so many twist and it's so cool to rewatch it to figure out what's really happening.

5 out of 5 stars I really liked it, even more so in HD.......2007-06-14

I thought this was a great movie anyway, in HD it's even better.

4 out of 5 stars Swordfish.......2007-06-08

Another great job by John Travolta and Hugh Jackman, both are great in this movie... John play such a bad boy so good...

3 out of 5 stars Swordfish.......2007-06-02

Travolta is absolutely insane in this movie. He acts like a psychopath. He is crazy. The other actors aren't fit enough to hold Mr. Travolta's coat. He outperforms them all!! Pure evil genius!!

As a depiction of the computer-hacker underground, this movie is bogus to the bone. As a thriller, it's cartoonish and conventional. The premise (computer-happy kids hack into the wrong system, and the Forces of Repression come after them) is recycled from John Badham's 1983 WarGames. And the corporate-creep bad guy, played by Fisher Stevens, steeples his fingers and growls mossy villainous clichés. ("By the time they realize the truth, we'll be long gone with all the money.") For all its postmodern trappings the movie is working with sub-prehistoric storytelling tools. But it does succeed on one level, as a movie about adolescent bonding and alienation. The director, Iain Softley, helmed the Beatles-in-Hamburg biopic Backbeat, and he seems to have an instinct for the emotions that pull kids together around common interests and the insecurities that drive them apart. The familiar crises of loyalty and betrayal have an ache of real loneliness. It doesn't hurt that the two stars, Jonny Lee Miller (Sick Boy Williamson in Trainspotting) and Angelina Jolie (Gia), are just about equally gorgeous and charismatic; their longing glances steam up the screen. --David Chute

4 out of 5 stars Hackers is Classic Film.......2007-07-21

As someone who grew up with computers, and has a fairly well grounded background in the tech sector. I find this movie to be a classic tech flick, yeah there are part that are cheesy. However I find that the story itself is solid. This is a movie I can watch over and over and never really grow board with it.

I will have to admit some of the phraseology is questionable and at times misplaced. However I don't feel that such gaps would harm the overall story that the movie is trying to tell. Although the fact that it has Angelina Jolie in it doesn't hurt either. Lets face it even then she was hot.

This is just my view of it, hope this helps ya.

5 out of 5 stars Jolie, Hufmann, Bracco!!.......2007-06-30

Oh! Do I have your attention now!?? Buy this and watch three of the most talented actresses alive and two of the most beautiful (sorry Huffman, but you do frumpy like no ones business). A good look at Jolie tosee her roots. and a puzzle movie where allt he piece's fit!

5 out of 5 stars awesome but unknown movie.......2007-06-15

This movie is very underrated. For how much great acting as well as the great story line this movie needs to be appreciated more as those two fat guys, ebert and roper (however you spell his name), say. "I give this movie 2 thumbs way, way up." On top of all this I think Penn Jillete, although a small part was AWESOME. Thank you and I take my leave.

5 out of 5 stars Classic Fav!.......2007-05-28

This movie has always been a fav. of mine! Angelina Jolie never looks(ed) better then she does in this movie!! I love the special effects!! I bought this along with Hackers 2 (Track Down), and Hackers 3 (Antitrust) All a Must have for any geek!!

5 out of 5 stars Good fun.......2007-04-13

This movie is a good fun time, with interesting characters and an intriguing story line. Although the technology is somewhat outdated it is easy to suspend belief and to become involved in the story. For me, Matthew Lillard was a standout character and his performance really made the movie for me.

The Net, the first of Hollywood's big cyberthrillers of the mid-1990s, was also the most successful, thanks in large part to the natural appeal of star Sandra Bullock. Still riding high from Speed and While You Were Sleeping, Bullock plays a computer expert victimized by sinister cyberforces who steal her identity for reasons unknown. It's a clever combination of high-tech paranoia and Hitchcockian references (including Jeremy Northam as a romantic stranger named Devlin, after Cary Grant in Notorious). Film historians may look back someday on films like this--Roger Ebert calls them "hacksploitation"--to see what they reveal about our society's reaction to the increasing role of technology in our lives, just as we now study the fears of Communism and the atom bomb reflected in films of the 1950s. Dennis Miller and Diane Baker costar. --Jim Emerson

1 out of 5 stars what a waste........2007-08-09

The movie wasn't good and the disc they sent didnt even work. It would cost me more to send it back than the actual movie cost. NOT worth the money.

5 out of 5 stars THRILLER, SUSPENSE Flick! .......2007-03-11

If you're into computers and you like a suspense movie, you'll probably love The Net. It combines the two quite well and Sandra Bullock does one of her best movies imo. In the film, she lives alone, spending most of her time fixing her company's computers on line. She seems to rarely go out or socialize except with others by computer. She even orders her food over the computer, and it's delivered. Because she keeps to herself, hardly anyone knows her personally, and her mother is in a nursing home with Alzheimer's Disease, so she doesn't remember her. Her only friend is an ex boyfriend, who happens to be a psychiatrist, and she's broken up with him. The fact that she's so incognito has a lot to do with the film. Before leaving for her first vacation in years, she get's a call from a friend in her company who is confused about a weird disk that's come into his possesion, and wants her to help him. Not willing to figure it out over the phone or on the computer, he tells her he needs to see her in person and he's flying to her home in LA. He never arrives.

She takes her vacation, but while at the beach she meets a hacker. Both are lying on the beach with computers clicking away. He seems like a nice enough guy, but beware, maybe he's not. The real plot actually begins at this point. From then on it's a mystery and a chase. This hacker works for a shady crime syndicate whose trying to take over the government by hacking into their computers.

She's chased all over the movie by this underground bunch, and I won't tell you the ending, but it's pretty exciting. Bullock is really good in this one.

4 out of 5 stars More relevant than ever!.......2006-10-01

The Net sheds light (as it should do) on the reality of people having grown so dependent on technology that someone tampering with one's data or an unintended error for that matter could lead to a nightmare.
The film brings to the screen the story of Angela Bennett, a computer expert, who after receiving a disc with sensitive information falls victim to a cover up with herself being the one who is being covered up...
Sandra Bullock and the rest of the cast carry out their performances very well.
The setting, the plot, and the dialogues are all wonderful!
In short, The Net is a movie definitely worth watching, as it will surely provide for an evening's entertainment.

5 out of 5 stars OTHERWISE FORGETABLE FILM IF NOT FOR THE BEWITCHING SANDRA.......2006-05-23

With any other woman in the lead role this film would be destined to go in the ranks of turkeys like 2fast 2furious but the incredibly sexy Sandra Bullock steals the show. She's not glamerous but rather "Homey" in this role which makes her all the more appealing. Good supporting cast

4 out of 5 stars Even after 11 years, still a film worth watching........2006-03-08

I remember watching this film 10 years ago on video, and thinking that it was an exciting rollercoaster ride. the film mainly works thanks to the credibility of the sandra bullock character, she comes through as vulnerable, yet smart and she pulls you into the paranoia, suspense , and action of the plot. And the film still works today because as in the film, we've become a society completely dependant over computers and we can empathize with the fear of becoming victims to technology.

Smarter than Armageddon and equally extreme, The Core is high-tech Hollywood hokum at its finest. It's scientifically ridiculous, but this variant of Fantastic Voyage at least tries to be credible as it plunges deep into the earth's inner core, where a formulaic team of experts pilot an earth-boring ship to jump-start the planet's spinning molten interior, now stalled by a military secret that could seal the fate of all humankind. It's a geophysicist's wet dream that only a fine ensemble cast could rescue from absurdity, and director Jon Amiel (Entrapment, Copycat) draws excellent work (and plenty of humorous interplay) from Aaron Eckhart, Hilary Swank, Stanley Tucci, Delroy Lindo, and a host of memorable supporting players, especially The New Guy's D.J. Qualls as the world's greatest cyber-nerd. With enough digital F/X disasters to satisfy anyone's apocalyptic fantasies, this is a popcorn thriller with all the bells and whistles that its genre demands. Sit back, pump up the volume, and enjoy the dazzling ride. --Jeff Shannon

I just love this movie, so happy that i could purchase this and own it

5 out of 5 stars That's Entertainment!.......2007-08-08

Why must you other reviewers ruin a perfectly entertaining movie???? No, Im not a scientist, or even close. Maybe that's why I loved this movie!!! Movies are for entertaining! Watch a documentary if you want non fiction accuracy. This movie rocks!!! Right up there with 'Independence Day'. (One of my all time favs)

1 out of 5 stars Digs it own grave, literally........2007-04-28

Impressive opening degrades in an almost quantam fashion. By 10 minutes into this film, disbelief can no longer be suspended and it becomes a comedy, though not intentionaly. The relationships of the characters to each other have an almost comic book feel. An analogy where a peach is roasted with a can of hairspray and a lighter is probably the best place to stop this movie and run out of your house and do something rather than waste your life watching the remainder of this film.

It's not quite torture, but I think the U.N. should look into it.

3 out of 5 stars Average story, cool effects.......2007-01-24

Hilary Swank can do no wrong in my book, and she is what saves this movie from being quite forgettable. Despite some really cool graphics, this film is about as clichéd and mediocre as movies get. You've got: the young, hunky science professor (Aaron Eckhart); his romantic interest (Swank); the know-it-all, jerky antagonist practically begging for comeuppance (Stanley Tucci); the genius geek (DJ Qualls) who hacks government websites for fun and sport, and the poor, sympathetic but brilliant (a cast minority, of course) scientist (Delroy Lindo), who has been cheated out of all the rewards he deserves. How original. The plot is at least somewhat unusual, however. The earth's core has stopped rotating, which means the planet will be destroyed in a matter of months unless it can be "restarted." So, it is up to the group to burrow to the core so it can set off detonations that will jump start it. Their vehicle, which has all sorts of bells and whistles, is a marvel of technology that would be the envy of NASA or Boeing... and was built within three months no less! Along the way, the effects get more and more attractive, which is sufficient to hold our interest. Although it is all highly implausible, the filmmakers at least attempt to make most of it sound reasonable. Something that really defies explanation, however, is why Dr. Zimsky (Tucci) agrees to accompany the group on its mission to the core. Over the course of the film, it becomes clear his primary concern is self-preservation; therefore, why would he put himself at such high risk when he could stay in relative safety at the surface? Aside from Hilary Swank and the effects, the best thing I can say about this movie is it in no way involved Jerry Bruckheimer, who usually turns up to add his own special touch to every apocalypse movie (and that's not saying much for Bruckheimer). Taken as a slight diversion, this film can be fun. Just turn off your brain and don't set your expectations too high.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome.......2007-01-09

If you like visual effects such as in the movies like The Terminator, The Cell, Aliens and Deep Blue Sea etc, then this movie is for you. It also has a great plot to save the Earth and the mankind, very scientifically based. There is also no place better than Amazon to buy it from.

Description

A crooked businessman hires a high-tech professional assassin team of two sisters to kill his elder brother. Fearing exposure by an undercover policewoman who has been shadowing the sisters, the businessman has the older sister killed and implicates the policewoman. The grieving younger sister and the framed policewoman must now form an alliance to bring down the businessman. Great high-kicking action in the tradition of Charlie's Angels and The Matrix.

4 out of 5 stars somethign about this i love.......2007-08-10

There something about this movie I love, It over uses everything really, the song Close To You-by the Carpenters, is played about 5 times through out the film it seemed they could only really afford this one song and they used it till it died. But it works; it's like a true 60's film with its one song.

Other then that the story and acting is nothing crazy, it's a simple revenge tale with some great hints a romance. This is what made the film for me it was the interest between the hit-man sister and the female cop. The way the camera handles it, letting them find their attraction instead of telling me that they attracted so when it culminates in the end it feels right leaving me the viewer satisfied with the end result of the romance.

This is important also the fact that there is this homosexual romance in the film existing with out being told it homosexual it great, there is no coming out story it is simple attraction, two people finding them selves wanting the other. As true romance works in real life, whether we let it or not attraction is simply something that happens not something that must be defined and that's what this film does so well it just lets it be. While still respecting the other sister romance with a male.

Gay films have found themselves lost in the story of coming out, and living with being gay in a straight society, but this film break these lines and defines itself inside a action movie non the less, while still caring on with the story of revenge.

I give this movie, 4 stars because of the smile on my face after I watch it as well as the willingness to make a romance film that breaks straight and gay standards.

4 out of 5 stars So close.......2007-05-08

The title hits it pretty close to the mark on this one; so close. Cute, fun smart, sexy, tragic, action. Not the best film ever but certainly worth owning.

4 out of 5 stars come closer!.......2007-02-28

Hey Film fans. Want an intelligent review go elsewhere but i tell it like it is! I have viewed this movie more than once , so that says something i feel. The movie has a great story, great acting, and some really decent kung fu girl battles. The movie uses some kewl special effects, and is filmed nicely. I recommend for the asian film fan.

4 out of 5 stars At first was mad...then it builded up Well!!!.......2007-01-09

At first I thought that this movie was gong to be so damn cheesy...but the end was very good!!! The struggle of a younger sibling trying to be like her older sister was touching and at the same time frustrating as hell, i was so mad at the younger sister!!! But the plots tie in well to give a surprisingly good ending.

5 out of 5 stars This has almost everything.......2006-11-19

I bought this movie because of Shu Qi. I was randomly looking around on Amazon for other Chinese movies to buy (besides my usual fare of Gong Li and Zhang Ziyi) and came across this.

Shu Qi is gorgeous...and I bought this for that reason alone.

Obviously, my expectation levels were very low.

I have since watched it no less than 50 times.

Highly entertaining, visually splendid, action-packed, funny, great (and original!) fight sequences...this is an action movie at it's best.

The movie starts off a bit cheesy, but once Shu Qi steps in, all is well. The love story also goes undeveloped, but honestly, you're not watching this for the drama. You want a love story, go buy The Notebook.

If you like beautiful women, action, martial arts, etc...you'll love this movie.
