The Longest Day is a vivid, hour-by-hour recreation of this historic event. Featuring a stellar international cast, and told from the perspectives of both sides, it is a fascinating look at the massive preparations, mistakes, and random events that determined the outcome of one of the biggest battles in history. Winner of two 1962 Oscars® (Special Effects and Cinematography), The Longest Day ranks as one of Hollywood's truly great war films.

The question facing any viewer of the Japanese CG feature Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children is: do you have to know the games on which it's based in order to understand the film? And the answer is: it certainly helps. But even complete novices (i.e., most parents) in the Final Fantasy world will find some entertainment in its wealth of fantasy-based action, and the animation never fails to astonish. Picking up two years after an epic battle between the forces of good (represented by brooding soldier Cloud) and evil (Cloud's former general, Sephiroth), FFVII opens in the devastated city of Midgard, whose youthful occupants suffer from a ghastly disease known as Geostigma. A trio of brothers arrives with what appears to be a cure for the plague, but their gesture conceals a more sinister purpose: to revive Sephiroth and bring about the end of the world. Cloud and his companions must once again rise to the occasion to stop the siblings and the revived Sephiroth from unleashing total destruction. Complex and self-referential to the point of occasional incomprehension, Final Fantasy VII will definitely be most appreciated by fans of the game series, but if others can look past the numbing dialogue and frenetic action (which is a bit too intense for very young children), the film offers a carefree and action-packed viewing experience. The two-disc set contains the original Japanese language version of the film as well as an English-dubbed edition (Rachel Leigh Cook and Christy Carlson Romano, among others, provide the vocal talent) and a version edited for the Venice Film Festival. A 30-minute featurette that recaps the Final Fantasy story up to VII, as well as a making-of documentary, deleted scenes, and promotions for future Final Fantasy VII games and products round out the extras. --Paul Gaita

Bought for my son as a gift. He loves it and has watched it several times by himself and with his friends. They tell me it is way cool!!!
Thank goodness for this!.......2007-08-11
Anything to fulfill the constant craving for all things Final Fantasy (especially VII) is always welcome. A fantastic movie in all senses. Recommended to movie lovers and video game lovers alike.
FF lovers must see it.......2007-08-10
This is a movie targeted at FF7 lovers. You will see your favorite heroes come back from retirement and battle an old evil.
The storytelling is not particularly elaborated, and casual fans might get completely lost on the plot. It, however, has some 5 minute, fast-track, mind-refresher video of the important events in the original FF7 game.
A good package.......2007-08-02
This is the latest special limited edition released in the US. Beautifully crafted, designed and packed as a collector's box-set. There are loads of extras in these 2 DVDs set. Scripts, books and exclusive postcards available only for this edition. The recording is in high-defination resolution. A must for all Final Fantasy and CG Animation fans. A 'value-for-money' package.

Tom Selleck shows a harder side of his persona as a disillusioned Confederate who returns home in the waning days of the Civil War in this adaptation of the Elmore Leonard novel. His wife, Suzy Amis, isn't ready to forgive him for leaving his family behind for the "adventure" of war, and his children hardly remember him. Haunted by his actions in the war and caught in a power struggle in the Arizona territory, Selleck's soul-scarred survivor makes a last stand to protect the only thing left that matters to him--his homestead and his family. The film has its share of gunfights, showdowns, conspiracies, and Civil War rivalries, and even a runaway stagecoach, but its power lies in the somber exploration of how misunderstandings and conflicts tear at a marriage during such a volatile time, when ideals are set against duty to family. Director Dick Lowry's lean style makes the most of the gorgeous landscapes, and he creates a strong dramatic tension in the bubbling undercurrent between Selleck, who leaves behind the jovial character of his Louis L'Amour Westerns for a man hardened and embittered by war, and Amis, an excellent actress who brings to life a woman who shoots, speaks her mind, and harbors resentment just as well as any brooding male hero. Keith and David Carradine costar as Union wranglers who hold a grudge against the Confederate veteran. One of the most mature TV Westerns ever made. --Sean Axmaker

tom selleck rides again.......2007-06-19
my husband a big western lover really liked this film. in typical tom selleck fashion he leaves the civil war after witnessing a massacar of innocents. the resulting story will please ater fans.
Last Stand at Saber River.......2007-05-12
It is an outstanding movie. It goes back to what we grew up with. A hero who is fighting against odds, but wins out in the end. Tom Selleck and Sam Elliott are the top western "story tellers" of our time. You can tell they love it.
Last Stand at Saber River.......2007-02-14
The movie was excellent and is typical of a Tom Selleck Western. It's to bad he is type-cast as Magnum PI, because he is a great portrayer of the Westerns and I would love to see him star in more of them.
The first of Tom Selleck's excellent TNT Westerns.......2006-11-04
"Last Stand at Saber River" was the first of three excellent Westerns that Tom Selleck made for TNT between 1997 and 2003 (and I'm still hoping there'll be at least a fourth one some day). Selleck has starred in five made-for-TV Westerns total, three of which are based on Louis L'Amour stories. This one, however, is based on a book by Elmore Leonard, and the difference is obvious in both the lack of idealism and in the extreme violence.
Selleck is Paul Cable, a Confederate cavalryman who has come home from the Civil War (only slightly) early. He knows the war is lost for the South, he is worn out, and he only wants to take his family back to their homestead in Arizona to live a normal life. His wife, who was told that he was dead, is less than thrilled to have him back home because she is resentful that he left to fight in the war in the first place. Suzy Amis does an excellent job as Martha Cable. She is not the stereotypical beauty who runs around in a bustle under fancy dresses. She is a tough frontierswoman who has experienced many hardships and gets her husband out of some tight spots as the movie progresses.
While the majority of the movie is good at depicting the divisions between North and South that caused the Civil War and which the Civil War then exacerbated, the subplot of the inner struggles that Paul and Martha Cable face is far more interesting. It's a great movie until the end, when we get the additional time-worn subplot of a Confederate soldier who just can't give up the Lost Cause. No, it's not Selleck's character who has this problem, but Selleck already had covered this territory in 1982's "The Shadow Riders" (though it wasn't his character who wanted to keep fighting in that movie either); John Wayne's "The Undefeated" is another well-known film with the Lost Cause plotline.
In spite of the needlessly melodramatic ending, this is a strong Western. Selleck and TNT kept getting better and better with "Crossfire Trail" and "Monte Walsh". Check out all three, and you'll join me in wishing for number four.
Well I'll Bow!...........2006-06-26
Tom Selleck takes on a serious role in this made for TV western. He stars as Confederate soldier Paul Cable, realizing the war is lost, returning to find his wife and family...hoping to pick up the pieces of a life he left behind. His wife Martha(Suzy Amis) isn't so happy to see him..she had thought him long dead..and was trying to get on with her life. With family, daughter Clare and son Davis(Haley Joel Osment), they leave Martha's father(Harry Carey Jr.) in Texas and head for Arizona and their ranch home. Upon arriving in Arizona, they find that the Union sympathizers(Keith and David Carradine) have confiscated their land..everyone still thinking he was dead. This requires them to fight for their home and for their acceptance in the rebuilding of life after the Civil War.
This is a well put together movie with good continuity. Not only does it have the western action but it also effectively shows the rebuilding of the marriage relationship between Cable and his wife. Susy Amis does a great job in portraying a wife that is ready to make her stand for family and home. Selleck puts in one of his better performances and shows that he can seriously act. Well worth adding to any western collection.

Sometimes grace and hope come in surprising packages. The title character of Hedwig and the Angry Inch, a would-be glam-rock star from East Germany, undergoes a botched gender-change operation in order to escape from the Soviet bloc, only to watch the Berlin Wall come down on TV after being abandoned in a trailer park in middle America. Hedwig gets involved with Tommy, an adolescent boy who steals her songs and becomes a stadium-filling musical act. Suffering from a broken heart and a lust for revenge, Hedwig follows Tommy's tour, playing with her band (the Angry Inch) at tacky theme restaurants. Into this simple storyline, writer-director-star John Cameron Mitchell packs an astonishing mix of sadness, yearning, humor, and kick-ass songs with a little Platonic philosophy tucked inside for good measure. A visually dazzling gem of a movie. --Bret Fetzer

I Love Hedwig.......2007-06-27
Having seen this film in the theatre twice, I don't know what took me so long to buy the DVD - I enjoy it every time I watch it! It has great heart and empathy and the music is fantastic! John Cameron Mitchell is enchanting as well as the whole cast. It is absurd, outrageous and yes, lovingly done. I especially liked Michael Pitt - he is one of my favorite actors - puts his whole being into every character he portrays.
Compelling Music that moves you!.......2007-05-07
a great movie , if you enjoy a good musical DEFINATELY take a second look at this film!
weirdWildness.......2007-04-11
My daughters bought this film and both enjoyed it for its weirdwildness. I can't say that I did, but it's a generational thing I guess. They especially liked the music, but again I can't say that I did although I'm a musician myself. Clearly inventive movie making and excellent musicians doing exactly what they want to do, but... I guess it's a generational thing. I don't particularly like Andy Warhol's flicks, or Broadway musicals, or Wagnerian opera, or John Coltrane, Philip Glass, or Modest Mouse indy music either. What's an old classical guitarist to do when the Bach D-minor partita is pulled off the music stand and the cross-dressers appear? The topics are not quite my style, although emotionality is the same across the entire human race. Inventive, wild, weird, very well done, but not my style.
Dr. Dude
An Inch Just Ain't Enough.......2007-03-30
Hedwig Robinson (John Cameron Mitchell) is a rocker. And she's got The Angry Inch beside her (and in her pants). As a young man, Hansel/Hedwig lived in East Berlin, right before The Wall came tumbling down. His sexual identity was always in question and when a cute, black, American soldier gives him a way out of the Eastern Bloc, Hedwig jumps on him (literally and figuratively). But he can't get to the other side of The Wall as a man, so an operation takes place to remove his vital functions below the waist ...if you get my meaning. Needless to say (if you pay attention to the title of the film), the surgery gets botched and leaves Hedwig with his "Angry Inch."
The anger is twofold. First is the failed operation; second is Hedwig's fury over stolen musical material by someone named Tommy Gnosis (Michael Pitt). Tommy is a rock-n-roll sensation, but it's all because of what Hedwig taught him in his early days. So Hedwig, in true b!tchy fashion, follows Tommy's rock tour around the world. But instead of playing in theaters and high end places, Hedwig and his Angry Inch band play at lowbrow restaurants, often to the dismay of its patrons who've simply come in to eat.
Hedwig's decline into obscurity is well played by director/actor John Cameron Mitchell. The musical soundtrack is very well done and the catchy tunes will have most movie watchers tapping their toes along to the rockin' beats. That he also remains angry at some of his band members is quite funny, actually holding them hostage by keeping their passports hidden away.
Revenge is the meal of the day as Hedwig finally meets up with Tommy again, eventually leading to Tommy's career demise and launching Hedwig into the spotlight. But is this what Hedwig really wanted? Not realizing the sacrifices she'd have to make, Hedwig decides to re-open her/his closet and show the world his/her true identity. He also sets free one of his band members who turns out to be a woman masquerading as a man, too.
Those willing to watch a film without sitting in judgement of the material will most likely eat this story up. It's quite funny, well acted, and has a rippingly good soundtrack. But if you're a staunch conservative or -- god forbid -- homophobic, you might want to pass on this one.
Mind-Altering Viewpoint.......2007-03-24
First time I watched this movie I was kinda confused, but felt like I'd just been run over by a truck. Still, I came back a second time, and a third, and a fourth...
And each time it amazes me. The meaning behind this movie and the idea of what makes someone happy might not end up completing them in the long run. *sigh* How many people can this touch before it becomes a cult classic?
Oh wait, It already is! :)

Freely adapted from Charles Frazier's beloved bestseller, Cold Mountain boasts an impeccable pedigree as a respectable Civil War love story, offering everything you'd want from a romantic epic except a resonant emotional core. Everything in this sweeping, Odyssean journey depends on believing in the instant love that ignites during a very brief encounter between genteel, city-bred preacher's daughter Ada (Nicole Kidman) and Confederate soldier Inman (Jude Law), who deserts the battlefield to return, weary and wounded, to Ada's inherited farm in the rural town of Cold Mountain, North Carolina. In an epic (but dramatically tenuous) case of absence making hearts grow fonder, Inman endures a treacherous hike fraught with danger (and populated by supporting players including Philip Seymour Hoffman, Natalie Portman, and others) while the struggling, inexperienced Ada is aided by the high-spirited Ruby (Renée Zellweger), forming a powerful farming partnership that transforms Ada into a strong, lovelorn survivor. The film's episodic structure slightly weakens its emotional impact, and it's fairly obvious that director Anthony Minghella is striving to repeat the prestigious romanticism of his Oscar®-winning hit The English Patient. For the most part it works, especially in the dynamic performances of Zellweger and Kidman, and the explosive 1864 battle of Petersburg, Virginia, is recreated with violent, percussive intensity. Those who admired Frazier's novel may regret some of the changes made in Minghella's adaptation (the ending is particularly altered), but Cold Mountain remains a high-class example of grand, old-fashioned filmmaking, boosted by star power of the highest order. --Jeff Shannon

LOVE CONQUERS ALL!.......2007-09-13
man this movie is a breathtaking love story. it's for sure to be a classic. greatly written, and portrayed. the acting was excellent. i'm sure everyone was touched at one point or another with the story behind this film. it has war, hard times, and a love so deep it surpasses everything and anything. this is greatness. jude law, not much of a big fan, but the man did it for me in this one. no complaints. he was very good. believable, a prince charming. he fought with one thing in mind, his beautiful ada. he must do all that he can to get back to her, it's his will to love, that helps him live. and nicole kidman, love her, great actress. she really brought it here. a women in love, writing, hoping, and dreaming for her inman to return to her. hope is never lost, and her love is never gone. she goes from a woman of high society, to a woman who must do all she can to survive the long winter months. extrodinary performance, and the capacity to keep hope alive through all is great. as for renee zellweger, she was so good in this movie. i loved it. she's a loud mouth, off her rocker tomboy. a thumbs up for her collaboration in this film. she brought the sass, and the "i don't take no bull from nobody" attitude. just right for this film. this has it all. action, drama, love, and survival. when finally they do reunite, there is so much love and passion, you can't help but be happy for them both, finally they become one. although it was sad what happened to inman, it was sadder to see all he and she went through to be together, for the outcome to be this way, but i'm sure they would have preferred that one night together, than a lifetime without each other. and with their daughter it's proof that love conquers all.
The Odyssey of the Civil War?.......2007-08-30
"Cold Mountain" (2003) tries to be The Odyssey told during the Civil War -the story of a man on his way home to his eternal love and all the obstacles and tribulations he faces. There a lot to admire in "Cold Mountain" - Anthony Minghella sure knows how to make a good-looking film with great views and impressive cinematography. This and his previous films, "The English Patient" and "The Talented Mr. Ripley" are the good examples of his craft. The war scene in the beginning of the film is very impressive - realistic, powerful and violent. I did not read the book, so I can not comment on what parts were left out but the love story between Inman (Law) and Ada (Kidman) did not touch me very much. I am not sure if it has to do with the story itself or with the performances of two main characters but they were overshadowed by the supporting characters played by Eileen Atkins, Brendan Gleeson, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Natalie Portman, Kathy Baker, and Giovanni Ribisi. Some of them had only few minutes of screen time but their characters are interesting and alive. Renee Zellweger received all possible awards that year for her turn as Ruby, funny looking but strong, energetic and independent woman who had helped the helpless and lonely Ada to manage her farm after her father died. I liked the character but I was not too impressed by Zellweger's performance. I think she had overplayed and made Ruby too grotesque. I've seen four Oscar nominated performances from 2003 and I liked two much better than Renee Zellweger.
There is a very frank love scene between Law and Kidman in the end. It is the well made scene but too beautiful considering that two lovers went through the nightmares of war, starvation, disease, and the lack of any decent conditions. I saw on the screen two very attractive people in great shape with sexy bodies but not two lovers of Cold Mountain during the devastating war.
Beautiful Scenery But Shallow Story.......2007-08-28
I'm not quite ready to join in dismissing this version of the best selling novel Cold Mountain as a "big-budget chick flick" but I will say that I'm one of the few women I know who wasn't captivated by this movie. (Not many men I've talked to about it liked it, and mostly said that was because it needed more Civil War battle scenes, which I agree it did.) What was good about Cold Mountain was its visuals, which were often very nice. What was wrong with Cold Mountain had to do with its slow moving plot, and the intolerable extent of its departure from realism. The morality here was cartoon-ish and straightforward good versus evil, no line of gray between, and its love story was the fluff of razor-thin romance novels. I also thought the characters were broadly-drawn stereotypes who somehow exuded shallowness (that mortal sin of the fiction world) despite the many over the top moments they were all given. Dyed in the wool fans of the actors who make up the cast of Cold Mountain will probably always enjoy this film, and it's great that they do, but for the rest of us, I'd advise that expectations be kept low. Cold Mountain is all right, but not much more.
Wow! What a Story!.......2007-08-17
Loved Jude Law! The story line was awesome and so was the cast. Great film with some sad and good moments. It's a love story that will make you cry and laugh at times. I was touched!

Gates of Fire: An Epic Novel of the Battle of Thermopylae

The futile yet inspiring stand of 300 Greek soldiers against the hugest army ever assembled in the ancient world inspired this typical example of Hollywood epic movie-making. King Leonidas of Sparta (Richard Egan, Demetrius and the Gladiators), prevented by political squabbling from sending his entire army to defend the narrow pass of Thermopylae, sets out with his personal bodyguard to fight off the ambitious Persian king, Xerxes. Along the way are a pair of young lovers, scantily clad dancing girls, and treachery though a secret mountain path. The 300 Spartans, made in 1961, has an overstated cold war subtext--there's much talk of freedom vs. slavery--and there are a few too many shots of armored men marching through the Greek countryside, but the historical conflict has a fundamentally stirring quality. Also featuring Sir Ralph Richardson (Dr. Zhivago, Dragonslayer) as a wily Athenian politician. --Bret Fetzer

A good, but not great epic.......2007-06-24
I've watched this DVD 3 or 4 times, which I wouldn't have done if I didn't like it.
It's in between an A and B movie - Cinemasope, color and location shooting are the "A" part, mid-level actors and budget are limiting factors. The love story is a bit of a tack on, but it is handled reasonably well.
Notably, this is a fairly accurate account of the battle and the events that led up to it. The Greeks did ultimately defeat the Persians under Xerxes, and this was a key event in western history.
I actually like that that movie did not have a blockbuster budget, the battle has to be shown on a small scale, making it more personal. Note the final scene, which is historically accurate. If you are an American, you might remember the Alamo.
Well worth it if you like this this sort of movie. For the more casual viewer, try "Cleopatra", (Elizabeth Taylor, ca. 1963), or "Spartacus", also ca. 1963.
Do not confuse this with the ordinary "sword and toga" B Movies hollywood churned out in the late 1950's and early '60's.
Spartan portrayal of Spartans.......2007-06-02
The writers and producers of The 300 Spartans had their hearts in the right place when they set about to make this film in the swords and sandals era. They included many "facts" (history back then was as much an art form as a journalistic one) of the event and filmed on location. Overall, however, it reeks of limited budget. Film stock was not the best. The typical we-must-use-an-American-lead-and-all-other-Greeks-must-have-British-accents casting is the greatest weakness. But for those who can't be bothered picking up a history book or using their imaginations, this flick comes closer to the truth than the very stylized '300' of Frank Miller. That film is an exercise in pure, over-the-top entertainment that cares not a whit that the battle had no giants, rhinos, or African elephants (from Persia?). Better casting, more Tarentinoesque gore, and more of the bravado of the most macho battalion of soldiers the world has ever seen would have pushed this film to four stars in my estimation. If you're a reader and love ancient warfare, seek out my novel To Move the World.
300 spartans.......2007-05-19
i bought this movie to compare with the 300. not even in the same universe. this is so poorly acted and directed that its awonder anyone would put their names on it. the story of the spartans at Thermopylae is so big and compelling you wouldnt think a director and actors could make it so small and comical.
The 300 Spartans.......2007-05-14
This was a great movie to preview in conjunction with the current 300 movie. It showed the tremendous technoloy differences from the 1960's to the present time.
Good to OK.......2007-05-13
Good plot/history detail, bad combat action sequences. The SCA could have done much better in this film than Hollywood. 300 the movie is better.

Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy stars Alec Guinness as George Smiley, John le Carré's familiar, aging British Intelligence agent, called out of retirement to discover the identity of the high-ranking Russian mole who has burrowed deep into "the Circus"--codename for the British secret service. This slow-burning, complicated, and ultimately rewarding BBC adaptation, dramatized by Arthur Hopcroft and directed by John Irvin, perfectly captures Le Carré's own insight into the shady underworld of spies and the political climate during the cold war.
Le Carré's style is the antithesis of his contemporary Ian Fleming's--far from the glamorous lifestyle of James Bond, with his fast cars and faster women, these agents ride around in Skodas, and Beryl Reid is the closest thing to a femme fatale, save for Smiley's elusive wife, Anne. An extraordinary cast (including Ian Bannen, Hywel Bennett, and Ian Richardson), gritty realism, and close attention to detail make Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy an outstanding piece of television drama. --Nicola Perry
Description
No doubt remains, a mole has infiltrated the Circus, code name for the British Secret Intelligence Service. It can be only one of four men operating at the very highest level. Sidelined agent George Smiley is covertly tapped to root out the mole, a task that requires a painstaking dig through the double-blind world of Cold War era espionage and his own past. Alec Guinness brilliantly captures the weary heart and steely soul of John lé Carre's master spy in an intricate drama hailed as one of the finest ever made for television. Also starring Ian Richardson, Michael Aldridge, Joss Ackland, Ian Bannen, Bernard Hepton, Terence Rigby, Michael Jayston, Hywel Bennett and Anthony Bate.
DVD Special Features: digitally remastered presentation, exclusive interview with John lé Carre, production notes, cast filmographies and le Carre biography and booklist.

russian dolls.......2007-07-09
'Jim in Czechoslovakia, Karla in India'. From Le Carre superb novel comes this spy story to an hypnotic film. Good old George will prove that Control was right: there's a mole in the circus.
A little flat.......2007-07-03
This version is a little flat, mostly due to poor casting. Somehow, all of the adverse characters, especially Haydon and Esterhase, seem to look alike. Who would cast an English actor for the role of a Czech patriot anyway? Obviously produced for BBC with a view of employment in mind. Look at the difference between this and Spy Who Came in From the Cold, where Richard Burton is the protagonist and a Smiley actually looks like Smiley. That said, it's hard to mess up this LeCarre masterpiece.
Six stars!.......2007-05-14
There are so many excellent reviews here that relate the story that I won't bother to repeat what has already been said. I am not a fan of spy stories and I usually get so lost in the plot that I lose interest. This one is so well done, though, that I managed to plow through until I finally figured out who was who and what was going on. I did rewind once to help myself. I mention this so that like minded folks, maybe female, will not shrink from the effort it takes in the beginning to make sense of this tale. It is well worth it!
As everyone else has written, the cast is superb, with special mention of the incomparable Alec Guiness. I'm sure that it was Guiness' presence that captured me and enabled me to labor through my initial confusion. Just watching his face--the subtle changes as he listens to the words of others is a great treat. Not only is he brilliant, though, he is dear! There's something terrilbly lovable about George Smiley as played by Guiness. One can only wonder what another actor would have made of the part.
As usual the BBC has done an amazing job. It's odd to think that this period in our history, which most readers here will well remember, is already so far in the past. I'll leave ruminations on that fact to others. I just want to add my voice here to those who have praised this superior production.
John LeCarre, BBC at Their Best.......2007-03-15
"Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy,"the 1979 British Broadcasting Company's 6-part television serial is, of course, based on the masterful novel, of the same name, by British spymeister John LeCarre. The novel, itself, was the first of LeCarre's Smiley-Karla trilogy, that ends with "Smiley's People."And, as the beneficiary of a first-class production by the BBC, "Tinker" achieves masterpiece status itself. The series, adapted by the talented Arthur Hopcraft for the screen, follows LeCarre's complex novel rather closely, giving us the intriguing plot developments, the well-rounded characters, and the witty dialogue. Furthermore, the BBC hired some of the best available actors for the many principal roles, and surrounded them with all the extras, the cars, and the location shooting any viewer could wish.
The plot concerns George Smiley, forcibly retired, along with a number of his good-guy friends, from Britain's spy service, called "the circus" by Le Carre. It is realized that there may be, within the spy service, a mole: a term created by leCarre himself to describe a person recruited in the past, and worked into a sensitive position, before being awakened to start reporting on his surroundings. To, in this case, Smiley's opposite number, the feared Karla, chief of the ruthless Russian spy machine. As it is realized that there is such a person working, and he is responsible for an unthinkably large amount of damage, including the deaths of several spy networks, and the dismissals of Smiley and friends, Smiley is drafted to locate him. But Smiley must work in secret, with only limited help from the official circus.
Alec Guiness plays Smiley with an instinctive understanding of the character that has seldom been bettered. He is, as mentioned previously, surrounded by some of the best actors available: Bernard Hepton as Tobe Esterhase, chief of the go-to boys; Ian Richardson as the mysterious Bill Haydon, Ian Bannen as the victimized Jim Prideaux, Alexander Knox as Control. Also Michael Jayston as Peter Guillam, Smiley's protege; Anthony Bate as Oliver Lacon, seasoned bureaucratic infighter; George Sewell as Inspector Mendel; Terence Rigby, and Michael Aldredge. There's only one casting mis-step; Hywell Bennett as Ricky Tarr, the spy whose unthinking love affair, with a pretty Soviet agent, begins the unraveling of the circus's dark secret. Bennett, who was the pretty-boy flavor of the month back then, simply cannot hold the screen with all these heavyweights.
It requires some patience, and full attention, to follow this intelligent series, that sometimes moves too slowly for American tastes, but those efforts are surely rewarded. This series is John LeCarre, and the BBC, at their best. However, you might want to be sure you can watch it on successive nights, rather than as it was originally shown, on a weekly basis: it's a lot easier on the memory that way.
Saved By Sir Alec.......2007-01-15
Whether or not you enjoy "Tinker, Tailor" will depend largely on your opinion of Le Carre. Personally, every time I read a Le Carre novel I promise myself I will never read another.
For me, the problem with Le Carre is how oblique and indirect his narratives are. I think Le Carre assumes a level of familiarity with the intelligence game that is just not realistic. For example, in "Tinker, Tailor", he never names the agency. Instead, it is referred to merely as "the Circus". This would be permissible if he first identified the agency and then told the reader the insiders' name for it. But Le Carre never does. He presumes too much.
That being said, I found "Tinker, Tailor" to be fairly watchable - especially the second half - due to the strength of Sir Alec Guinness' performance. Perhaps I am biased since Sir Alec is one of my favorite actors (this due to the fact that he features prominently in my Holy Trinity of Film - "Lawrence of Arabia", "The Bridge on the River Kwai" and "Doctor Zhivago").

The last and least memorable of John Ford's famous cavalry trilogy (following Fort Apache and She Wore a Yellow Ribbon), Rio Grande nonetheless has an interesting continuity about the gentlemanly rules of military conduct. Here the focus is on the family. While creating a heated controversy over his handling of the Apache war, John Wayne must also contend with disgruntled wife Maureen O'Hara and estranged son Claude Jarman Jr., a new recruit trying to earn his father's love and respect. Ford seems to suggest that there are two conflicting codes of honor in every cavalry officer's life, the personal as well as the professional, and that it takes an act of heroism to maintain both. It's fascinating to observe Wayne's progression throughout the trilogy, as his personal stakes intensify. Also, this is the first of five onscreen appearances between the Duke and O'Hara, each filled with a competitive spirit and stormy sexuality. --Bill Desowitz
Customer Reviews:
A solid part of the "Cavalry Trilogy".......2007-09-04
John Ford's so-called cavalry trilogy includes "She Wore a Yellow Ribbon" (absolute classic), "Fort Apache" (a terrific movie in its own right), and "Rio Grande" (sometimes looked at as a lesser movie). However, "Rio Grande" holds up nicely on its own.
The protagonist, York, has the same name as Henry Fonda's subordinate in "Fort Apache," also played by John Wayne.
York's son, after failing at West Point, is assigned to his command. His mother, played by Maureen o'Hara, tries to get him out of the service. Of course, the son refuses.
After that, the movie addresses the issue of Native Americans in the United States crossing the Rio Grande to avoid the American Army. General Phil Sheridan (not too well depicted as an oversized figure--Sheridan himself was a small person in stature) empowered York to cross the River--unofficially. Thus, if any problems came up, York would be the fall guy.
Neat scenes: riding horses as "the ancient Romans," young York getting in a fight, the wonderful rescue of the children in Mexico.
Although some see this as the least of the trilogy, it captures a feel and generates some powerful emotional responses. All in all, a fine movie.
A Quite Musical Western.......2007-05-24
One characteristic of this old black-and-white flick is the singing of old folk songs by the men of the US Cavalry. There is also a display of various cavalry skills. For instance, the mounted men must jump over a 6-foot fence.
Lt. Colonel Yorke (John Wayne) has his son in the cavalry unit, but pledges to treat him equally to everyone else. Yorke's son had failed West Point, and now wants to redeem himself in the US Cavalry. His mother (Maureen O'Hara) comes, and tries to have him removed from the unit. The other soldiers think that the son is privileged, and this leads to a fistfight.
The US Cavalry is fighting against the Apache Indians. Yorke is limited by the fact that he is forbidden to cross into Mexico to pursue the Apaches. The Mexicans have the opposite problem. This becomes obvious when Yorke meets with his Mexican counterpart on an isle in the middle of the Rio Grande.
In time, there is a savage Apache attack, and some children are kidnapped and taken across the border into Mexico. Yorke decides to disobey the directive and to cross the Rio Grande in pursuit of the Apaches and their hostages. Will his unexpected move catch the Apaches by surprise? Will he succeed in freeing the hostages? During the operation, he takes an arrow in the chest. Will he live?
Classic Western Movie with an outstanding actor........2007-03-11
This John Wayne Western movie is great.
I intend to make it a part of my DVD library
including other Western classics.
Rio Grande: The start of a great pairing.......2007-03-08
Rio Grande was conceived as a movie to pay for the making of another film. John Ford wanted to make a little film called "The Quiet Man" but Columbia Studios wanted a quick money maker to pay for the next production. The result was "Rio Grande." A classic in its own right, one that should not be missed. Directed by John Ford and starring Maureen O'Hara and John Wayne together for the first time. The story is what hyou should expect from Ford, good action and get characters. Look for many familar faces in this film, like Victor MacLagen, Chill Wills, Ben Johnson and Harry Carey Jr. This film is part of the fabled cavalry trilogy. It is rousing and exciting. Atrue classic, don't miss it.
The most sentimental of Ford's movies..........2006-11-08
Ford's cavalry trilogy is, in its way, just as much Victor McLaglen's trilogy, for he appears once again in 'Rio Grande', still superbly filling the tough-soft sergeant part, still providing the Ford horse-play comedy element with just a touch of parody, still, one might add, probably fulfilling Ford's own particular vision of revering the heroes who have helped conquer the West...
The McLaglen sergeant seems drawn on the spreading of lines, but in retrospect, one realizes that somehow, paradoxically, he has inspired a remarkable degree of realism into the three motion pictures... (They would be not the same without him.)
'Rio Grande' has a very strong domestic flavor...
John Wayne - a casualty of the Civil War - is a cavalry officer, under strict orders, with great family problems... He's a northerner who, not surprisingly, has left his wife, a southerner, because he obediently did his military duty and burned several southern plantations - including the one owned by his wife's family... Maureen O'Hara - bringing a fitting maturity to her stereotyped assignment in the film - never forgives her husband for burning her plantation, and abruptly takes their son and goes away, effectively ending their marriage...
Fifteen years later, Wayne, promoted to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel, U.S. Cavalry officer, attempts to maintain the truce calm at his southwestern post, which is besieged by marauding renegade Apaches who are continually using the border with Mexico as an escape route after their raids, a lost cause since the U.S. and Mexican governments agreed that their military forces will not cross the Rio Grande under any circumstances...
He hurries to put down an Indian uprising when his past and his wife cross his path again... He is confronted by a new recruit: his West Point dropout son (Claude Jarman Jr.) and, later, the arrival of his frigid wife, desperate to buy her son out of the cavalry...
Everything, domestically and militarily is, of course, resolved successfully and, indeed, predictably, but it is the texture of the film that gives it its enjoyment - the gentle study of the reconciliation of a colonel and his estranged wife; the interplay of a father compelled to send his son on a dangerous mission; the peculiar supporting contributions of the 'beloved brute sergeant,' or the cavalry side-kicks, Ben Johnson and Harry Carey, Jr.
The three films (even considered singly) give a feeling of frontier military life, however colored by a director's highly personal viewpoint, that has hardly been approached, let alone surpassed...
There's a beautiful scene in which Wayne and Maureen are serenaded by soldiers of his troop... We can observe a husband meditating about all that went wrong with his marriage, and watch the inclination and desire that exist in his longing sideways brief look at his wife...
With first rate acting and lushly sentimental score, 'Rio Grande' can never be missed... It is the last of John Ford's cavalry movies and the most sentimental...
