A confident hybrid of M*A*S*H, Treasure of the Sierra Madre, and Dr. Strangelove, Three Kings is one of the most seriously funny war movies ever made. Improving the premise of Kelly's Heroes with scathing intelligence, it explores the odd connection between war and consumerism in the age of Humvees and cellular phones. Writer-director David O. Russell's third film (after Spanking the Monkey and Flirting with Disaster), it's a no-holds-barred portrait of personal conscience in the volatile arena of politics, played out by one of the most gifted filmmakers to emerge in the 1990s.
George Clooney, Mark Wahlberg, Ice Cube, and Spike Jonze (director of Being John Malkovich) play a quartet of U.S. soldiers who, disillusioned by Operation Desert Storm, decide to steal $23 million in gold hijacked from Kuwait by Saddam Hussein's army. Getting the bullion out of an Iraqi stronghold is easy; keeping it is a potentially lethal proposition. By the end of their mercenary mission, the Americans can no longer ignore wartime atrocities (and neither can we--the film is boldly unflinching), and conscience demands their aid to Iraqi rebels abandoned by President George Bush's fickle wartime policy. This is serious stuff indeed, but Russell infuses Three Kings with a keen sense of the absurd, and the entire film is an exercise in breathtaking visual ingenuity. Despite a conventional ending that's mildly disappointing for such a brashly original film, Three Kings conveys the brutal madness of war while making you laugh out loud at the insanity. --Jeff Shannon
Customer Reviews:
Surprisingly Good.......2007-07-06
I didn't expect much from this movie, but it turned out to be quite entertaining. It had a certain realism to it, and I like that, instead of the absurd storylines that are so frequent these days.
Clever, funny and different.......2007-06-23
David O. Russel's 'Three Kings' is a hard film to lock down into a particular genre. It combines elements of a war movie, a comedy and a drama, and manages to do it very well. People wanting to see lots of big guns and bombs should stay well clear, there are video games to keep you amused. Anyone who appreciates witty, clever and slightly off beat films is well advised to see it.
Telling the untold story of the Gulf War, with Saddam's army more worried about shooting rebel Iraqis then allied soldiers, was a brave move in Hollywood, because many people don't want to know that a democratic uprising in Iraq was being crushed while the Allies sat by in the desert. Rather than being an action movie, the film develops into an exploration of three soldiers and the human development caused by their experience of the war, and the extraordinary circumstances they place themselves in.
Many innovative and experimental cinematic styles are used nicely, and solid performances are recorded by Clooney, Wahlberg, Jonze and Cube. The characters are portrayed as normal human beings, both noble and flawed at the same time, and even the Iraqi soldiers are seen as people rather than typical war movie bad guy cannon fodder. This film genuinely showed me the desperation felt by many Iraqis for the Allies to help them as they starved and fought desperately against Saddam.
One of my favorite films, and probably one of the most underrated films of its time
Don't like Clooney, what are you Looney?.......2007-05-13
Sorry about the title, Three kings was not a movie I chose to see on the big screen. My wife recommended it and I found it was an entertaining flick. Not a desert storm movie like Jar Heads, a different take on an old story line.
Interesting Adventure film set In Iraq after Gulf War 1.......2007-04-09
A group of Gi's in Kuwait following the first Gulf War find a map on a prisoner that leads them back across the border on a gold hunt. The country is in a state of chaos with Sadam's soldiers taking their revenge on anti- Sadam citizens. The GI's get caught up in a more complicated situation with refugees then they planned on.
Well conceived and written with excellent special effects, this is a hard movie to categorize. It's sort of Oceans 11 goes to Iraq, A combination military adventure/heist movie with some interesting social commentary and moralizing thrown in.
All three of the principal actors do a good job but Ice Cube is particularly good in this. George Clooney and Mark Wahlberg are fine in their respective roles.
Definitely entertaining and different.
Good movie.......2007-03-30
This is a good movie that starts out as an adventure and slowly changes into a morality movie. I like it and think its setting is contemporary and timely.

The extended version of Peter Jackson's King Kong adds 13 minutes to the running time--fortunately those 13 minutes include two dynamic action scenes and no material has been added to the movie's belabored set-up, which tries to give depth to these quintessentially b-movie characters with a clumsy patchwork of melodrama and in-jokes. But once movie-maker Carl Denham (Jack Black, School of Rock) and his crew finally arrive at Skull Island, the movie kicks into gear with spectacular action, technical wizardry, and genuine feeling. Though Kong seems crafted to dazzle the eye on the giant screen, the overlong structure improves when you can take an intermission at will. At home, each scene can be approached on its own terms, be it the insanely choreographed battle between Kong and three T. Rexes or the subtle and multi-layered interplay between Ann Darrow (Naomi Watts, Mulholland Drive) and Kong (played, through motion-capture technology, by Andy Serkis, who previously played the similarly animated Gollum in Jackson's Lord of the Rings). The addition of a rampaging ceratops and an underwater race with what the movie's crew dubbed a "piranhadon" not only add more eye candy, but provide some valuable moments of character development. But in the end, that's frosting on the cake; when the movie's weaknesses and strengths are weighed, the emotional power of the fantastical relationship between a woman and a giant ape is a real cinematic achievement. --Bret Fetzer
Customer Reviews:
King Kong sized absurdity.......2007-08-27
It's strange, but looking at the reviews this movie seems to be a love/hate movie. I can't imagine what makes it so polarizing. I found it cringe-worthy.
My biggest gripes: nearly every action scene is cartoonish. A stampeding horde of brontosauruses not only can't outrun humans... it runs with them, over top them, without stepping on anyone. For several minutes. The same problem happens with the rest of the crazy dinosaur/island creatures... they don't seem to adhere to any principle of physics and motion, but gnash and crash and fall down all over the place while magically avoiding the main characters.
Another problem is the love story. Why would a woman care about a freaking monkey? One that has eaten human sacrifices for decades, and that destroys everything whenever he feels like cutting lose. She doesn't recognize that part of him, just that he's a big sweet monkey who has love in his heart too. Awwww. Not only that she doesn't just seem to like him as a friend. She seems to want to marry him. A 30 foot tall, man eating monkey. Of course, that's the original story, but they failed to help explain it any better.
One more gripe: Jack Black. Great guy, very funny. He screws up this movie because it's not a comedy. Sorry Jack but you don't belong in a dramatic action movie where everyone's waiting for you to crack jokes. He doesn't crack any, by the way, but there's the problem. He's not one of those guys who acts well outside his comedy, and as an important personality in this film it's almost embarrassing to watch him have no dramatic presence.
The one good thing is the visuals (for the most part, sometimes the CG feels disconnected from the actors), there's a lot of beauty shoved into some scenes.
She Never Gets Whiplash.......2007-08-26
Even after suspending disbelief to get into this movie's world, you have to keep on going. How she keeps from breaking her neck, or even getting whiplash, is amazing. Why can't Kong get around the wall with all of his amazing abilities? What do the natives do for a living -- that is, when they aren't offering people who drop by to Kong? Farm? Do embroidery? (And the scenes with them doing a sort of drugged dance was really worth a chuckle.) All that said, it's entertaining. And most of the unbelievable (in the movie's own world) stuff is in a way fun to see. So I gave it 3 stars. It's worth about $6 to see. (I'm very glad Peter Jackson was more careful with the Lord of the Rings movies.)
Pretty exciting movie.......2007-08-23
I have seen the original and thought it was good but to me it seemed ancient and not 'classic'. Perhaps I am too young to see it that way. But at least I have seen the movie, on more than 1 occassion. Anyway, I love Peter Jackson and I loved this film. Yes, it was a tad overlong but I dont mind long movies as long as they keep my interest. The effects and acting were wonderful and amazing. Peter Jackson and his Weta team are genuises in that department. In this, I actually felt sypathy when King died, as opposed to the original where I felt nothing. Naomi Watts is quickly becoming my favorite actress. She can truly do anything. Kong Himself was by far some of the best effects in film history. There is no way anybody can complain about that. I saw it in the theaters and it was an awesome experience. That is probably the best way to see this, on a very big screen.
Do away with the ice pond and it's 5 stars.......2007-08-22
This film delivers what it is suppose to deliver: FUN. This isn't serious drama, this is cartoon type fun. Jack Black was terrific as Carl Denham, Adrien Brody was okay as the hero and Naomi Watts was great as Ann, the beauty loved by the beast. That said, the star of this film is the giant ape and a wonderful job they did bring the beast to life. I did not care for the scene on the frozen pond in New York. That really was dull and contrived, but the rest of the movie moved along well and it did not seem three hours long. The supporting actors were also very good, including the cameraman, the captain and of course the male movie star. Was it better than the original? Well, I loved the original and I was prepared to be disapointed by a remake. I was not however. If only all remakes could live up to this standard.
One of the biggest disappointments of the decade........2007-08-21
It certainly seemed like a recipe for a winner to have modern CGI special effects in support of a remake of the classic story and an obviously talented and capable director at the helm. What was produced was a movie that actually increased my appreciation of the 1976 version. When it starts out in New York it is really slow, slow, without anything really required, most of it could have been cut out. Then on the island it gets ridiculous, as they get involved with stampeding dinosaurs tumbling down the cliff, and swinging Tyrannosaurs; everything that should have been so much better than the SFX-scarce 76 version was orchestrated so poorly and with so little inspiration, that you start wondering how much longer it can go on. Finally they return to more silliness back in New York, with the ape himself sliding on the ice with the girl. Apart from the problem of making Kong merely a scaled-up silverback gorilla, who shows all the subtlety and charm of a...gorilla, you can't wait for pilots to get on with it and kill the poor thing so the movie will end. Long, long, and nothing of note. Who could have believed that this would be such a lousy film. Perhaps to be loved only by great Kong fans who want to believe this is a treasure. A great testament to the all the problems with Hollywood films today.

Customer Reviews:
The End that came too soon.......2007-02-21
Where to begin with this. Well first I don't actually own the box set but i do own the uncut dvds. Also as expected if you haven't watched the last hundred forty episodes that are prior to this box set you'll be completely lost so don't even try it. This series is not for kids, there are demons, grotesc death, people being beat to death that kind of thing, so keep this out of the hand of the kiddes.
Now then where to begin. Yu yu hakusho is one of those rare series that run over a hundred episodes and still hasn't run out of steam by the end of the series. As the last season of one of the greatest anime ever it finally reveals that past of two of the main chacters. All though one of the main characters is mia for most of the season, it actually works better that way. it gives a full explaination for everyone's action and their future leaving really no question unanswered, though leaves some things open for a sequal, someday maybe.
Now then onto the actual review. The animation is some of the best you can find for the time peroid but it is nearly ten years old so don't be expecting yourself to be dazzeled. The music is flawless as are the sound effects. The voice acting really couldn't get better each fit their characters perfecty, as to be expected by this time. The story is one of the most interesting and intricate i've ever seen. The action is on par with pre-Majinboo DBZ,in other words some of the best you will find any where in any genre. Character design is well done and it's pretty easy to conect on a personal level with each character. The series is more or less perfect and the three kings saga is the best out of the entire series as a final season should be.
In all if you have the money, like action shows and have seen the rest of the series then buy this one youy won't regret it. If you don't own the rest of the series go b8uy it, yes there five or six box sets for $60 each but its well worth the money.
A great saga. .......2006-06-06
As a die-hard YYH fan, I can say that this saga delivers an incredible, yet, bittersweet end to this great anime. Great story, great animation, and particularly tremendous action -- a must for YYH fans.
A Good Ending To A Good Series.......2006-04-27
Okay, this is a good ending to a good series. Why did I only give it 3 stars well:
Pros: great info into the characters pasts, good animation for the day(1992-1995), good back story, a good ending to a good series, more grey than simply good and evil.
Cons: Horrible chiches and annoying concepts (i.e. flying, energy blasts, speed lines, etc.), some lazy/spotty animation, tournament concept feels very overplayed after dark tounement, series kind of hard to get into at this point.
Though, regularly I'd give it 4 or 5 stars, the cons defatly outwheigh the pros and to be honest I really wouldn't recomend it to anyone who doesn't already like the series.
I Promised Myself I Wouldn't Cry..........2006-04-17
I'll be the first to admit my bias in this review: I am a die hard Yu Yu Hakusho fan, with fanfiction to prove it. When this final box set arrived at my front door I was hyperventalating with excitement. But enough about me, on to the product. I have found that YYH, as a TV show, becomes better as it goes, and I thought it was great from the start. With this particular series, it is the characters and the writing that make it so extraordinary. This is true in the Three Kings saga more than any other; all the characters (especially the fan favorites, Hiei and Kurama) are put into greater detail. Even Kuwabara, who unfortunately (yes, UNFORTUNATELY) does not appear much in this story arch has his own development. In brief, these episodes are chock full of heart-wrenching, knee-slapping, and misty-eyed moments. The worst part is to see it finish, but as Yusuke states, "like days off of school, TV shows, and all good things", this story must come to an end. (It's ironic how this is my last day of Spring break and I'm reviewing the final episodes of YYH...)
This is a must buy for any YYH fan, and if you are not a YYH fan, become one.

Sometimes bigger is actually better. Nearly matching the size of director Michael Bay's ego, this massive four-disc set is a veritable Pearl Harbor archive, and ironically, Bay's film remains the least interesting component. It's a purely conventional Hollywood take on the tragedy, using a clichéd love triangle between two ace pilots (Josh Hartnett, Ben Affleck) and a Pearl Harbor nurse (Kate Beckinsale) as an "intimate" means of spectacularly re-creating the attack that thrust America into World War II. The director's cut adds little to the previous DVD release, apart from authentic R-rated carnage during the Japanese raid, and minor expansion of the Hartnett-Beckinsale romance. Commentaries range from superfluous (Bay and film historian Jeanine Basinger) to highly entertaining (Ben Affleck and costars) and technically informative (primary production team), and a spirited examination of visual effects (with Bay and ILM supervisor Eric Brevig) is guaranteed to fascinate anyone interested in physical effects and CGI. A broad "making of" documentary is noteworthy for one-time viewing, while abundant historical records make this a valuable compilation of definitive materials.
The History Channel's "One Hour over Tokyo" and "Unsung Heroes of Pearl Harbor" provide depth that Bay's movie lacks, and Charles Kiselyak's interactive timeline is arguably the finest feature included, providing an in-depth historical perspective on U.S.-Japan relations. Even a brief reenactment of a Pearl Harbor nurse's journal is moving in a way that Bay's film can only try to be, while the "Interactive Attack Sequence" provides a multifaceted exploration of the entire production process (a highly educational feature for aspiring filmmakers). All in all, these four discs offer an admirable balance between Bay's technically impressive but ill-conceived epic and a thorough, fitting tribute to those who endured hell on that fateful Sunday in 1941. --Jeff Shannon
Description
PEARL HARBOR: THE DIRECTOR'S CUT Vista Series DVD is the most extensive exploration of moviemaking ever presented. Four discs showcase more than 60 new shots in the film and over 12 hours of new special features. There's never been anything like it before. History comes alive in the unforgettable epic motion picture PEARL HARBOR, the spectacular blockbuster brought to the screen by Jerry Bruckheimer and Michael Bay. Astounding visual and audio effects put you at the center of the event that changed the world -- that early Sunday morning in paradise when warplanes screamed across the peaceful skies of Pearl Harbor and jolted America into World War II. This real-life tale of catastrophic defeat, heroic victory, and personal courage focuses on the war's devastating impact on two daring young pilots, Ben Affleck (ARMAGEDDON) and Josh Hartnett (BLACK HAWK DOWN), and a beautiful, dedicated nurse, Kate Beckinsale (SERENDIPITY). PEARL HARBOR is extraordinary moviemaking -- a breathtaking reenactment of the "date which will live in infamy" and a heartfelt tribute to the men and women who lived it.
Customer Reviews:
A MUST HAVE FOR ALL WAR MOVIE FANS.......2007-02-11
This is an awesome movie in recreating the attack on Pearl Harbor. None have done it better. Tora Tora Tora is better for historical fact, but this movie puts you in the attack. Love story aside, this movie captures the essence of the times and of the attack. You feel the emotion of what has just happened. Don't miss out on a great movie because of the secondary story of the love affair. If all possible see this movie on a large widescreen TV with surround sound. The DVD has DTS sound. I swore bullets were flying by me. They filmed this at Pearl! right at the spots where this whole thing took place. They took bits of the stories from the men and women that were there and put them into the film. For the little bit of historical fact that was not right, like Dan Akaroyed's part in the film; it is overshadowed by the real stories and information that was put in the film. The negative thing about this movie is the lead actors Ben Affleck,Josh Hartnett and Kate Beckinsale. They were good, but needed to be stronger. Now Alec Baldwin who is a great actor anyway was fantastic. A great movie! Great special features on the DVD.
Not the worst war film ever made but not the best either.......2006-09-23
I originally had high hopes for this film. After seeing the vastly superior "Tora,Tora,Tora!" I was looking forward to seeing the attack on Pearl Harbor done with today's special effects.
Unfortunately they had to throw in one of the most ridiculous love stories ever set in a war film.
The plot has to do with two childhood friends who join the Army Air Corps. While going through a physical, Ben Afleck falls in love with Kate Winslet. He then volunteers to go help the British as a fighter pilot and is subsequently shot down and presumed dead. Josh Hartnett (Affleck's best friend) falls in love with her and after months of not hearing from Ben she falls in love with Josh. Ben returns and he and Josh have a big fight...
Anyway the attack sequence was the most exciting part of the movie, it looks and sounds great if you have a home theater and a big screen TV, but if you want to see the sequence in it's entirety I suggest you go with the Vista version it's quite a bit more graphic and would have probably earned the movie an R rating (those folks at Disney probably would have hated that!) as well as all the bonus materials they include:
An interactive timeline of the events leading up to pearl harbor.
Deleted scenes
Blooper reel
Several documentaries on making the film
A great set of post cards with the actors that look like old war posters
Production diaries
The stars at boot camp
And much more....
So if you've got almost three hours to kill and want to see a great action sequence get this set and just chapter skip to the bombing.
It Could Have Been Worse, But I'm Not Sure How..........2006-08-27
The post-Don Simpson decline of Jerry Bruckheimer reached what was, at the time, an all-time low with the release of "Pearl Harbor."
There are very few movies that are just barely watchable, and one of them all but bankrupted the company that made it. No such luck here. Both Bruckheimer and Michael Bay should have been banished from Hollywood for this mess. Or, better yet, Bruckheimer should have conned Tony Scott into directing it, since he seems to be the only director he can get consistently good results out of.
In its favor, though, the lush Technicolor cinematography and ILM's frighteningly realistic visual effects almost draw attention away from the wooden acting and turgid love story. Too bad you have to sit through nearly an hour of said love story before you get to the movie's showpiece: the destruction of the Arizona. If you want something to show off your home theater setup, just cue this section up, and make sure you're playing back the DTS track. Oh, yes, and make sure you have enough to pay for any broken windows, cracked plaster and/or blown speakers that may result...
Maybe instead of releasing an extended version, they should have considered putting out a much shorter version. Like one that skips over everything before and after the attack.
If you hated this film, it's your own fault for watching it.......2006-04-26
It's a comment that sure rings true: on South Park, Cartman speaks of an injustice while Michael Bay continues to make movies. While Bad Boys, Armageddon and the Rock had cool action sequences, they were also ADD-influenced in its editing and the emotional parts of the film just rang absolutely hollow. Anyone remember the animal cracker scene from Armageddon? Well imagine a love story that's perfect for Days of Our Lives and you find a really hollow effort but with great effects.
Obviously set around the time of the Pearl Harbor attacks in 1941, we actually instead follow 2 pilots Danny and Rafe as they end up falling in love for the same nurse, Evelyn. Rafe goes away, is presumed dead and Danny and Evelyn start a relationship. In soap opera fashion, Rafe comes back who's not happy then the attack starts. This continues until the Doolittle Raid to Tokyo.
If you want a great sound demo for your stereo you of course have to cue in the actual attack. Running just shy of a half hour, it's extremely well-done and worth the price of admission, or rent or purchase. ILM did a great job and it of course has that trailer shot everybody loves. Unfortunately it's the main reason to watch the film because it's essentially 90 minutes of bad dialogue until we get there. The same problem plagued Titanic where you can literally divide the film into 2 halves and the first suffers because it took so long to get to the 2nd.
The dialogue is that bad with some that are supposed to be inspired lines but come across as laughable, especially Colonel Doolittle's since it's essentially a big speech. The love story is of course laid on a bit thick and it's not a well-written one at that. Another problem is the certain faux-epicness of it all with big slow motion shots with planes flying overhead, big camera moves around people and it just makes me cringe since they have an almost indulgent feel about them.
This is of course the big double dip where it includes everything they should've had on the original release. You get the commentaries, production diaries and featurettes as well as some historical documentaries. To add insult to injury, the historical looks have more substance than the actual film does. Oops. The director's cut adds some more gory shots that seem kind of sudden and out of the blue at times, especially with people's familiarity with the normal cut.
The effects are great but the film itself has a detached feel about it all, as if it's nothing more than a really cool action sequence. Private Ryan and Apocalypse Now's action sequences where exciting but also emotionally compelling where you felt the horrors of war, here it's just "look at the neat stuff!". I'm not demeaning the attack and massive loss of life but this film feels completely hollow in that regard.
I have no idea whether to recommend this or not so I'm going to give it the rating of a CR, meaning a cautious recommend. If you buy the film and love it then all the power to you but if you hated it, don't say I didn't warn you, this is Michael Bay after all.
a five star attack is bookended by a two star romance that was old hat in 1941 and is just bad now........2006-04-25
michael bey's "pearl harbor" is one of those "what could have been " movies. with a screen play that would have been laughed at in 1941, mr bey has tied his great f/x scenes of the attack, to a love story that is the last word in corny. the number of times logic is given up in favor of the sappy love story just kills this flawed take on america's darkest day(9/11 not withstanding)!! at nearly three and a half hours it goes on forever and really after the attack there isn't much story left to tell. a very big miss fire from mr. bey and company!!!!!!!!!!!

Three Guys Named Mike.......2007-09-11
This is one of the great old movies. With a great cast. Unfortunetly we lost Jane Wyman yesterday (Monday, September 10th) All generations should see some of the old greats
great.......2007-05-06
I like this moive.I loved Howard Keel's role, he was sweet and likeable, Jane Wyman was perfect for her role.I liked Van Johnson, but personally I would have choosen Howard Keel.A delightful, funny movie
Enjoyable and Worthwatching Film.......2005-09-10
I enjoyed the film very much but sadly in three parts of the film the picture jumped. The film has been returned.
Top-flight entertainment! Keep your flaps up! .......2005-05-03
I absolutely adore this film. Jane Wyman is so adorable. She plays a spunky, all-American girl stewardess in this film that stays off the ground more than on it. Howard Keel is very sexy as her favorite pilot (Mike #1, as I affectionately call him). Keel has, in other movies--especially his musicals--displayed a tendency to overact. Not so in this picture, in which he is extremely masculine and likeable. Van Johnson, who has had the same problem, is very sweet here. For some reason I have never bought into the ultra-suave characters he has played in other films, such as the ones with Esther Williams, but he is adorable as a cute nerd. Mike #3 is the one that virtually no one cares about, and I can't remember who plays him for the life of me. It is actually difficult to predict who Jane will end up with, which is refreshing. I alternated between rooting for Howard and Van, but I think the best man wins out in the end. Please watch this movie! You'll love it!
Delightful Romantic Comedy.......2004-01-06
I love Jane Wyman! This movie is very sweet. This is definitely a movie for women to enjoy. Unlike the previous reviewer/Howard Keel fanatic, In my opinion, the choice became clear, little by little, through subtle means, which Mike was right, and the last scene clinched it. I don't know the quality of this tape, but the movie itself is a keeper. This is one of those they-don't-make-'em-like-they-used-to's! I wish more of Jane Wyman's movies were available; she was such a good actress.

A four-pack of mid-'30s Three Stooges shorts, with enough concentrated nyuk-nyuks to satisfy fans. Two of the shorts are from their first year with Columbia, 1934. "Men in Black" has the boys as residents in a very unlucky hospital. It's nonstop mayhem, featuring an unorthodox approach to healing (the words "Give 'em the anesthetic" usually means a mallet will be applied to skull) and a good running gag about an ill-advised glass door. This one was nominated for the best short subject Oscar. "Punch Drunks" is an all-time Stooges gem, with Curly as Moe's new boxing discovery--but he can only achieve his fighting fury when Larry plays "Pop Goes the Weasel" on the violin.
From 1937, "The Sitter Downers" has three brides for three stooges, but their honeymoon is delayed by the building of a house, in typical Stooges style. Curly is wound up especially tight in this one, and it has some primo sight gags about home construction. "Playing the Ponies" navigates a zig-zag Stooges storyline, taking them from restaurant (Curly fixes an appetizing filet of sole) to horse track. It has a classic Stooges hand jive, although it shows how slapdash their shtick could get.
The DVD has Columbia's "ChromaChoice" colorized gimmick, which simply means easy toggling between the original (well preserved) black-and-white shorts and the colorized versions. The colorized images are sensibly rendered, but they still have that washed-out paleness they've always had--eggshell greens and light browns abound. So real Stooges fans can ignore the color, and ponder the eternal questions: Why was Moe so angry? Why is a bald man named Curly? What was the deal on Larry? And "Why don't catfish have kittens?" --Robert Horton
Product Description
Digitally remastered and colorized using the latest technology. Includes both the colorized version as well as the restored black and white original, which ChromaChoice allows you to toggle between versions while you watch. Includes these hilarious shorts:
Men in Black (1934) Calling Doctor Howard, Doctor Fine, Doctor Howard. Three nitwits take medical malpractice to a whole new level in this Oscar® nominated Short Subject.
The Sitter Downers(1937) A sit-down strike not only wins three imbeciles the girls of their dreams, but a prefabricated cottage complete with wifely ultimatum: no house, no honeymoon!
Punch Drunks (1934) Whenever Curly hears "Pop Goes the Weasel," he turns into a fighting madman, so Moe promotes him as the next heavyweight champion of the world.
Playing the Ponies (1937) You can lead a horse to water and make him drink if you feed him chili pepperinos, as the Stooges do to a broken-down nag, turning him into the thirstiest - and fastest - racehorse on the planet.

IM NOT USALLY A FAN OF COLORIATION OF OLD CLASSIC FILMS, BUT THE JOB THAT HAS BEEN DONE ON THESE STOOGES COLOR DVD'S HAVE BEEN VERY WELL DONE! AND WHAT I LIKE MOST ABOUT THESE DVD'S IS THEY OFFER YOU THE B&W VERSION AS WELL. ''THE BEST OF BOTH WORLDS ON ONE DISC''! I THINK THAT'S GREAT! I HOPE COLUMBIA KEEPS PUTTING OUT MORE OF THIS COLLECTION. I JUST WISH THEY WOULD COME OUT WITH NEW STOOGES SHORTS, NOT THE SAME OL' SAME OL', YA KNOW? ANYWAYS,..THIS IS AN AWESOME DVD SERIES. IM A HUGH STOOGE FAN! 03-03-07
No wonder it didn't sell well.......2006-08-25
Who are the executives at Columbia who seriously thought that this would be a good idea? Fans of classic film sent the powers that be a message in the Eighties that they hated colorisation, and after the issue was seemingly dead and buried, it rears its ugly head again in a new generation. The Chroma Color (from what I saw of it on the self-congratulatory featurette) does look better than the colorisation of the Eighties, but that's still not saying very much. It might look better and more realistic, but it still looks fake and distracting. And even if it did look totally natural and lifelike, it just doesn't feel right. Some people you can only ever picture in black and white; to imagine the Stooges in color (apart from a handful of films they made that were actually originally shot in Technicolor) would just seem wrong. These shorts were shot in black and white and have been enjoyed in black and white for over 70 years now. The technicians can do all of the research they want on what types of colors these things might have been, but it's still missing a big point--the colors that were actually chosen were chosen precisely because of how they would register on black and white film stock. The colors used certainly wouldn't have looked anything like what they actually do in Chroma Color. Frankly, the only reason I even rented this disc was because I hadn't yet seen 'Playing the Ponies' or 'The Sitter-Downers.'
This disc also has the misfortune of only having two previously unreleased shorts. It's great that one at least has the option of viewing them in B&W or color (and there is a "Play All" button, something that was absent on almost all of the previous discs), but it's not great at all that the consumer is basically being asked to pay much more money for something that only has two new-to-DVD shorts. 'Men in Black' and 'Punch Drunks' were already released on the 'Curly Classics' disc. Including both the B&W and colorised versions, there are 8 shorts on this disc; if only they could have been 8 shorts that hadn't been released on DVD prior instead of consisting of two rehashes. And come on, only 4 shorts on a disc, regardless of how many had already been released?
The shorts themselves are somewhat of a mixed bag. 'Punch Drunks' (1934), their second Columbia short and the only one they got credit for writing themselves, is a classic, even though they hadn't really ironed out their comedy style, their screen personae, or their screen relationship yet. If only this and not 'Woman Haters' had been their first short, since it has the three of them meeting one another for the first time in the opening scenes and starts to establish their characters and relationship.
'Men in Black' (1934) I personally find to be kind of overrated. It is rather memorable, but more because of what an odd short it is, not because it's fall-down hilarious or contains a lot of classic lines and routines. It seems like a lot of their early shorts have been declared classics only because they were done so early in their tenure at Columbia, and not for any more substantial reasons. Seriously, would this short be considered such a great classic had it been made in, say, 1940 or 1938? Still, as strange as this short may be, at least it's nowhere near the likes of 'Horsing Around' or 'Rumpus in a Harem.'
'Playing the Ponies' (1937) has some fun stuff in it, but overall I didn't find it to be so hot. This short got a one-star rating in 'The Three Stooges Scrapbook,' though I wouldn't give it such a poor rating myself. (This is also the same book that gives 3-star ratings to the likes of 'Sweet and Hot,' 'Hoofs and Goofs,' and 'Fling in the Ring'!) This is a cute fun short, but overall it's not one of their classics. I'd consider it a bit below average.
'The Sitter-Downers' (1937), which stars Ted Healy's sister Marcia as Cora Belle, could perhaps be viewed as the short in which they entered into their golden era. There's a lot of great stuff in this one, and even though the premise of trying to build a house had been done before (by Buster Keaton in 'One Week' and by Laurel and Hardy in 'The Finishing Touch'), it doesn't seem like an old and tired situation. The possibilities for comedic mayhem are endless when carpentry is involved! The concept of sit-down strikes was also something that would have hit the original audience very close to home, as they were all over the news that year. The ending is somewhat abrupt, but everything that went before was so great that it doesn't really matter.
This is not a collection I would recommend getting, even considering that one does have the option of watching them in B&W only. Though the overall quality of the shorts is pretty decent, there are still only 4 shorts, and half of them have been issued before. It's ridiculous that someone actually thought this would sell well and generate a lot of interest instead of indifference and anger.
Great for what it is.......2006-06-28
The real contraversy with this release seems to be the addition of colorized versions. This isn't really a bad thing - it does add an extra dimension to the Stooges, and it's purely optional for you cats who prefer the purer black and white. Why not include both to satisfy all fans? Unfortunately, a lot of the Stooges fans seem to be taking a note from their heroes. They've accused this release of including an icon to toggle between B&W. Some have theorized that it's for piracy protection, others that it's for the ease of switching. They're both wrong. The toggle icon is a feature of the DVD player - not the DVD - and is ENTIRELY REMOVABLE if you know how to use the player itself.
When I first bought my player, that was the first thing I turned off, and it hasn't been a problem ever since. Consequently, the icon is NOT displayed when I'm watching these Stooges classics. The process of shutting that (typically) optional feature involves going through the dvd *player* menus and shutting it off. If your player doesn't have one, it's time to slap your face, and Curly shuffle down to your local store to get another because quite a few special editions have (what my player calls) "angles" (i.e. simultaneous displays).
Like everyone else, the fact that a dvd which can fit up to 4 hours (dual layer) in SP has only 4 shorts which amount to 68 minutes is plain ridiculous. I will never collect these releases and will continue to wait until they release an exhaustive set.
More sucker-bait for Stooges fans.......2006-02-13
The Stooges are great, but the core of their achievement -- the approximately two hundred comedy shorts they did for Columbia -- has never gotten anything remotely approaching the respect it or its fans deserve. This latest piece of junk adds yet more insult to injury.
A one-sided DVD will hold at least thirteen Stooges shorts, but Columbia, when it sporadically decides to knock out a new one, only includes five to eight shorts. Until now, that is.
This latest disgrace only has four shorts. You read that right -- less than a third of what it could hold, out of some 200 shorts in the Columbia vaults. And at least one of the four -- "Men in Black" -- is already out on an earlier-released Stooges DVD collection (*Curly Classics*).
The nyuk-nyuks are on us consumers, apparently.
Naturally, given Columbia's bent, it's charging more than ever. Pay more for less value, in other words. That should be Columbia's motto.
Oh, that's right: These are colorized. Like the Stooges really need that.
New and improved colorization, supposedly. There's even a little "featurette" trying to sell us on the colorization (when what consumers really want are a lot more Stooges shorts released, with far more shorts per disc and more reasonable prices). Colorization, we're assured, has made great technical strides since the old controversy about it in the '80s.
Let *me* assure you: *This* colorization job looks as bad as ever. Nothing looks real, and everybody's skin has that ghastly orangey washed-over look.
Fortunately, the colorization effect can be turned off. But not the distracting icon that's on the lower right corner of every frame of the Stooges shorts. Presumably this is to discourage piracy: But, if so, how do thousands of new movie and television DVDs get released without them? Why are Stooges fans singled out to suffer them?
The bottom line is that this is yet another example of Columbia's gross disrespect for both its products and its customers.
I'd gladly pay hundreds of dollars for thoughtfully released DVDs of the complete Stooges Columbia shorts: circa 13 shorts to a disc, lost scenes restored (another notorious failure so far by Columbia), no repetitions of shorts from disc to disc (the greed of these cheaters is illimitable), and, hopefully, some meaningful chronological order (by release dates or, better still, production sequence).
Not that I'm holding my breath.
For now, I'm just renting these Stooges DVDs on a one-time-only basis for myself and my children. I wouldn't dream of buying any of them given Columbia's greedy and insulting marketing schemes. Columbia won't get my money, and I hope it doesn't get yours.
And it shouldn't get any of our money until it finally decides to do right by the work and the fans of the Stooges -- and market those 200 classic shorts with some shred of decency.
Great and horrid at the same time .......2005-06-14
I think the high-definition part is great for wide screen TVs , I own a EDTV 42" plasma and dvd's not enhanced in any way or not wide screen are stretched unless you have a new dvd player with HDMI and a TV with DVI or HDMI . So for this it's awesome that they enhanced them for high-definition . The bad B>S> if these are remastered and the definitely not restored . During "punch drunks" what is up with the line down the middle of the screen , If you have a plasma you will see every artifact , which i would be able to live with being that there 70 years old BUT If you remastered them you can remove a line, That is unbearable to watch and second some dvd players show this blue movie camera in the top right hand corner . My old Toshiba did not , My new Samsung with HDMI does . I cant watch them that way . So I'm returning the player for a new Panasonic HDMI in hopes that it will remove the camera . As for the artifacts and the missing scenes of the shorts . Columbia , You blanked the stooges and now you blanked the fans . Worst movie company in the history of TV . I do not agree with most saying the color is bad , I think that is one of the best parts and if you don't like it switch it to B/W . Who cares how much if they were done right the Stooges are priceless but for edited and un-restored versions I don't think i will ever buy anymore till some new company buys them out. They would sell anything for money cause that's all they care about and I'm sure there are other motion picture companies that would do justice to the Stooges , Till then Screw Columbia . !!! By the way who runs threestooges.com , It is so lame , never really have any news and never respond to any emails , There a joke . The boys deserve better . I Would pay $1,000 for a restored ,uncut, remastered in HD box set of all curly and shemp shorts any day .

somewhat disappointed in fort worth.......2007-08-16
The first 2 seasons of chef were really amazing, and exciting, however season 3 changed so much. I really didn't like the way the show went
from film to video, and I also don't like the way that the characters changed so much, (we know nothing about these people). I am glad, however, that Everton remains until the end. I was disappointed to see that gareth had sold the restaurant, and was no longer the owner, but I
was glad to see that Janice had left Gareth, because he really paid her no attention...This series was really hard for me to watch, because I hated to see Gareth's life be in the toilet the way that it was...but the last 2 episodes of season 3 were really brilliant. I was so happy to see that Janice was finally pregnant; that She and Gareth got back together.
Season 3 was, indeed, the show's downfall.......2006-05-18
Chef, as a series overall, is simply brilliant. Henry is a brilliant actor and the character of Blackstock is a joy to watch. The plot is halfway absurd mostly all the time- but it's genius and hilarious.
Unfortunately, season 3 transformed the show into a completely different animal. Season 1 is by far the best- the look, the music between scenes, the storylines, the character development, etc. Season 2 saw the addition of a laugh track which was annoying, but the look of the series stayed the same. We saw some characters go and some new ones pop up. No big deal.
Season 3- first off, they went from shooting the series on film to video. I noticed this the second the first episode of season 3 started on the DVD. I was shocked to see such a wonderful show turned into a full-fledged, shot-on-the-cheap sitcom, instead of the semi-high brow comedy gem it used to be.
This season brought too many character changes...in regards to missing characters, new characters, and odd behavior for the already existant characters. Things got a bit moodier and darker...not as cheery, light, and just not as funny.
Worst of all tho was the look of the film and the music. Season 3 just looks terrible when you got used to a series shot on film. Most people wouldn't imagine the difference this simple (yet major) change can make. It looked like a series of slick, well shot, big budget, short films for 2 seasons...then suddenly went to a cheap-looking sitcom that seemed to be shot on a soundstage somewhere. In 1 and 2, you couldn't help but think they were in an actual kitchen, inside an actual French village, location shots galore...it was real stuff taking place that just happened to be filmed. This image was shot down with season 3, sadly.
I wouldn't say season 3 is terrible. The story gets less funny, the characters do more depressing things (Blackstock's relationship goes down fast)...but, still- you can't help but wonder if this is what did the show in. The series, overall, is still brilliant, it's just sad that season 3 had to taint it the way it did.
The season that runied Chef!.......2005-10-23
The first two seasons of Chef! are absolutely brilliant and some of the most entertaining television one will ever watch. Season three, however, is virtually unwatchable - they changed director, changed from film to video tape, replaced many of the actors and the result is perhaps the fastest downfall of a great series in television history. I would avoid seasons three like the plague but do check out the first two seasons.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent! .......2007-01-02
This was the first time I had ever seen Goldilocks and the Three Bears, and I loved every minute of it! I loved Tatum O'Neal-she was perfectly cast in the role of Goldilocks. The rest of the cast was equally strong as well.
excellent FTT episode; the entire cast is superb.......2004-10-08
GOLDILOCKS AND THE THREE BEARS is one of the best of the entire FAERIE TALE THEATRE series. Bright, breezy and with a flawless cast and script, it makes for irresistible viewing.
Tatum O'Neal is perfection in the title role. The story recounts the adventures of a ringletted brat called Goldilocks as she happens upon the 'deserted' house belonging to 3 bears. After helping herself to their porridge and breaking Cubby Bear's chair, she goes to sleep in his bed. When the bears return, she gets scared away...but not for long!...
After concocting the biggest lie she has ever told, Goldilocks decides to take further advantage of the Bears' hospitality!
Tatum O'Neal is joined by a strong cast including Donovan Scott, Carole King, Hoyt Axton, Alex Karras and John Lithgow.
Goldilocks & the Three Bears.......2002-03-16
This was one of my favorites, when I was growing up. It's funny, entertaining and one of my favorite fairy tales of all time. If you like the story books, you'll love the movie just as much or maybe even more. I love and own most of The Faerie Tale Theatere movies and this one I've been searching for quite some time. I found it and bought it on Amazon.com
TWO THUMBS UP FOR GOLDILOCKS AND THE THREE BEARS!.......2001-07-27
This is just what I expected a Faerie Tale Theatre production to be like. From mischievous young Goldilocks (Tatum O'Neal), to the friendly forest ranger (Hoyt Axton), to the three playful bears (Alex Karras, Brandis Kemp, and Donovan Scott), the movie is wonderful. This is a charming and humorous retelling of the story of "Goldilocks and the Three Bears." It teaches a lot about friendship and caring. It shows how quickly an enemy can become a friend. I also like the fact that they add new parts to the story, such as certain scenes that involve the parents of Goldilocks (Carole King and John Lithgow), and more experiences with the bears. It makes the movie more interesting, and not just the same old story once again. All of the acting is very well done. Tatum O'Neal is exactly the kind of person you would expect Goldilocks to be: she's kind, curious, spunky, and of course, she has curly golden hair. In fact, the whole movie is very well done! I would definitely recommend getting this video for you and your family to enjoy over and over again!
