Just enough of Michael Crichton's novel survives in Timeline to make it a passable popcorn thriller. It's likely that Crichton fans will lament the shallowness of director Richard Donner's film, and its gee-whiz style of acting lays waste to any scientific credibility that Crichton's scenario might have retained. Still, the Crichton formula is a sturdy one, following the model of Westworld and Jurassic Park by involving a small band of adventurers in a fantastical realm of danger and death. In this case, a group of archaeologists and combat experts (led by Paul Walker and Frances O'Connor) use a "3-D fax machine" (so much for technobabble!) to time-travel back to France in 1357, in hopes of retrieving Walker's father (Billy Connolly) and returning safely to the present. No such luck! Fending for themselves against marauding hordes of medieval French warriors at war with the invading British, these semi-intrepid travelers find their body count rising, and the deadline for their return home is rapidly approaching. All well and good, so far, and the castles-and-crossbows action reaches a fever pitch, but it's obvious that Donner's too lazy to make the much better film that this could and should have been. Despite its enjoyable highlights, Timeline is perfunctory entertainment. --Jeff Shannon

Fun movie.......2007-09-06
"Timeline" by Michael Crichton is one of my favorite books! The movie is just slightly different (due to time constraints), but it is a well done and fun movie. The costumes are awesome, and finding out they used a real castle and real trebuchets made the movie even more interesting for me. The acting, for the most part was good, but could have been better. I would like to see this movie done with a better cast...Brad Pitt as Chris, Sean Connery as the Professor, Cameron Diaz as Kate, Antonio Banderas as Andre Marek, and Seth Green as David Stern, would be my top picks to star in a remake!
I thought the effects were great! This is just a fun to watch movie, with a great story and I could watch it many times without losing interest. Great movie for teens to pique their interest in history and/or science fiction too.
Thud! Thud! What a Dud!.......2007-09-03
I like good sci-fi movies such as Gattaca and Existenz and historical dramas, even if they bend the facts of history a little such as the HBO TV Rome series, so I was looking forward to entertainment. I would have been better off, however, watching the nine o'clock news on TV last Sunday. Ten minutes into the movie I knew it was a dud. I stuck it out to the bitter end. I felt that the highlight was the siege effects in the last half an hour despite the French knight toting a shield bearing the arms of Canada's Quebec La Belle Province, founded many centuries later! The acting was appalling and very hammy. Did any of these "actors" actually graduate from Acting Academy? I have seen better drama and less emoting in junior school stage productions. There is also the problem of a very thin story line. Time travellers get stuck in a wormhole, others sent to extract them and nearly get stuck too about sums it up. Plenty of historical flaws (1357 was one year after the battle of Poitiers in which the French king and many of his nobles were captured and detained in London until the Treaty of Bretigny of 1360. It was in the middle of a very bad period for France and the English certainly didn't have their backs to the wall then ). Historical distortion would have been acceptable with a good cast and strong story line to support the techically good and seemingly highly expensive production, although in daylight the setting looked a bit like a castle in a theme park. I'm glad my copy was a 50 euro cents DVD "giveaway" with the Sunday newspaper. Had I spent nearly $10 on it I would have wanted my money back.
Timeline.......2007-08-23
This movie has something for everyone -- history, time travel, romance, action, etc. The plot has a unique twist, and the cast does a great job. It's nice to see Billy Connolly and Gerry Butler together again (Mrs. Brown), and I loved hearing them speak in their Scottish accents, rather than having them try to speak like Americans! I highly recommend this movie.
LOVE THE BOOK.......2007-06-27
I love the book and this its one of Mike's greatest. This film isn't as good, but still FUN to watch. If you don't mind bad acting and lame fight scenes. But they did spend a lot of money on the film in some areas so it doesn't feel completely like a made-for-tv-movie.
Timeline.......2007-06-27
I enjoyed the action and romance in the story and especially liked the character of Merek. If you like action and romance and a lot of sword-play and flaming arrows...enjoy!!!!

"I want young people to grow up so that they will frighten the world; a violent, dominant, cruel youth
I do not want intellectual education. Young people must learn to conquer the fear of death - that is the standard of a heroic youth. We shall die, but they are the future, the flag we have raised from nothing, we will hand on to them." Adolf Hitler This is the story of an organization with a membership of only thirteen thousand in 1930 and over ten million in 1945. The Hitler Youth was the future of the German Third Reich, the dream died with Hitler.

valuable information.......2006-11-01
If you want information on the Hitler Youth, this DVD is terrific. There is lots of footage that I have never seen before, and I have followed the matter of Nazi propaganda and indoctrination for a very long time. Mostly there is footage of mass rallies and marches, and to some that might seem familiar and boring, but there is enough variation in the footage that it does vividly recreate a remarkable era and add useful detail and depth to the general picture. There is enough footage of the manipulation of young people's desires for fellowship and fun to round it out.
The narration goes into considerable detail about the organization/manipulation of the Hitler Youth. Again, some may find this boring but if you want information then it is valuable. I think it is important to understand that the Germans were not indoctrinated simply because Hitler was a hypnotic speaker, but the Nazi's were very well organized and played on previously existing cultural values.
This DVD gives a good impression of how German youth were manipulated by a shrewd and effective understanding of the "herd mentality." I doubt that one who has followed this issue will have to work very hard to see this.
Yes the DVD is correct that the organizational structure and enthusiasm sort of died with the defeat of Germany. But in a way I agree with another reviewer who was critical of this claim that the Hitler Youth was not disbanded in any formal way but merely faded away. There was a resistance movement in Germany that the Allies tried to keep quiet for psychological reasons. [Some of this is only coming out now to explain to people who are worried about the resistance in Iraq that the victory in Germany was not so clean as we had been taught.] And it was more difficult to remove Nazi thinking from the German system of education than the Allies expected. We still have a lot of details to understand about such things. Probably former Hitler Youth were involved in various forms of resistance to occupation. But how much HY organizational structures were kept intact underground is not clear to me at least. I am not sure the story is well enough understood to be ready for for a documentary. So I do not fault the DVD for not going into this.
To complement this documentary DVD about the indoctrination of German society see Nazi Medicine, Cross and Star, and Architecture of Doom.
For fictional dramas involving HY a couple of my favorites are Swing Kids and Europa Europa. Some scenes in Cabaret are to the point. Some that can be googled, I have not seen.
A wasted opportunity . . . or worse........2006-08-12
The Hitler Youth. What an opportunity to reflect on the psychology of conformity and the politics of propaganda. This film, however, does neither, choosing instead to veer between dry recitation of facts and an almost nostaligic view of the Hitler Youth!
At least half the film consists of long excerpts from Hitler Youth rallies and marches, played without comment, as though the viewer might actually enjoy the tedium. Finally the documentary concludes on a note of sorrow--indeed, sorrow--that the ten million Hitler Youth finally disbanded, going so far as recount how one poor soul buried his Hitler regalia in a pit watered by his own tears! No alternative view of the disbanding is even hinted at.
Skip "Hilter Youth" and watch "The Architecture of Doom" for an insightful documentary on Nazi philosophy and propaganda techniques.

Say it with Sign Baby SIgn Language.......2007-04-06
I will have to give this DVD a thumbs down for toddlers. The program is too fast paced for even an adult to grasp the message. There are only a few signs that they show children actually doing them, the rest are done by adults. I think Talking Hands and Signing time series are much better because they go through the signs very slowly and show children doing the signs in many different settings. When I put my DVD player on slow speed, it was easier to comprehend the signs, but then the sound didn't work. My two year old lost interest before the first of seven segments finished.
excellent.......2007-03-10
we have been using a few different sign language series for our hearing child. This is by far better organized and can keep their interest as the children grow. The featured Signers are very good . I prefer this to the other Sign language learning series.

Customer Reviews:
a little fast paced.......2006-08-14
my daughter loves signing videos and does like this one although I tend to think that it's a little fast paced. The repetition is very good and beneficial but the speed of the repetition is too fast. I also think the women that do the signs are a little annoying but it's probably due again to the pace of the video. Regardless, my daughter has found this video helpful and has learned a few words that she hadn't known before.
Not a very good teaching guide for those of us with sign language literacy.......2006-05-05
I purchased this as well as volume 2 and have been nothing but disappointed. I am extremely versed in both English and ASL as I've grown up with a deaf sister for over 37 yrs. The signs are silly. The teachers go from teaching "mother" to teaching "cows". They even teach such silly things that are common place such as eyes, nose and mouth that we all teach to our babies as they grow. I found that I am better off teaching my babies the sign myself (now that I am home more and not working 60 hours a week) since it is correct and not contradicting as are most of the signs in these videos. I warn others to NOT purchase these as they are awful.
Say It With A Sign, Vol. 1 & 2.......2006-03-18
Having these two DVDs has been a wonderful experience for our grand-daughter! We started playing the first vol. when she was 6 mo. and she's been watching the second Vol. for some time too. She claps when she first hears the music and watches them entirely. She has been signing the basics and when she first did 'butterfly' we all cheered! Now at almost one year she signs and tries to say the word as well and her parents are thrilled with her progress.
We all LOVE the videos.
Thanks,
Michael and Linda

Say It With a Sign Vol. 1.......2006-02-22
I heard about this video through a co-worker. She is related to the creator. I bought it for my son when he was about a year old. He is now 17 months old, and he uses 8 signs reguarly. His favorite is, "eat more cookie please!" The best part is, he LOVES watching the video. His face lights up every time it comes on, and he actually brings it to me when he wants to watch it. This is the only video (besides Baby Einstein) that he will watch. I also enjoy sitting with him and helping him sign. This is a great video for all children!
Love this video.......2006-01-21
I was just online checking to see if Volume III was available yet. A friend told me about these sign language videos and how her children love them. Now, my six-month old granddaughter loves them. She watches them every day and responds to the sounds, colors, and pictures by kicking and trying to talk to the TV. I'm sure she will be signing soon. I will be getting Volume III as soon as it is available.
