From a visual standpoint, this CG feature starring the venerable '80s and '90s superheroes the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is nothing short of slam-bang; the computer animation has a scope and look that transcends both the original comics and animated series and the three live-action features that preceded it. Writer/director Kevin Munroe creates a striking animated world for the four heroes in a half-shell to live, play, and fight in, and the action sequences are occasionally breathtaking in their speed and complexity. But where TMNT stumbles is its bland plot, which picks up after the last of the live-action features with all four teen turtles in disarray, and abandons longtime villain Shredder in favor of an industrialist (well voiced by Patrick Stewart) who recruits the Foot Clan (including Karai, played by Zhang Ziyi) to revive thirteen ancient monsters to aid in his world domination scheme. It's a simple and fun story for kids, but longtime Turtles fans will miss the wry humor and smart sense of irony of the original comics (created by Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird, who gets an executive producer credit here) in this storyline. Still, for most adolescent audience members, such concerns won't matter a whit in the face of the abundant action. --Paul Gaita

With the help of old allies April O'Neil (Sarah Michelle Gellar) and Casey Jones (Chris Evans), the Turtles are in for the fight of their lives as they once again must face the mysterious Foot Clan, who have put their own ninja skills behind Winters' endeavors.

4 out of 5 stars A Return to Form.......2007-09-11

I used to read the comic book "back in the day," watched the animated TV show and even the movies. Yes, the horrible live-action movies. My expectations were low when this movie came out so I didn't see it in a theater. After renting it from Amazon, I now regret that I missed seeing it on the big screen.

The animation is top notch and the voice acting is decent. What surprised me the most was the story. Unlike the live-action films, it wasn't loaded up with lame surfer jokes and slapstick. The story stayed true to the comic and captured the essence of what makes TMNT fun.

I highly recommend seeing this film.

5 out of 5 stars Not a timid success.......2007-09-08

I think everything in this movie was nicely presented with great editing and moved forward with a lot of grace, just as the live action films had been, but definitely with more allowance for the different scenes and effects. Mostly, I liked the story, and I think that it stands out among other animations. TMNT has all that someone would want from a story. I admit I was a little nostalgic going back to it, but it was a nostalgia I couldn't deny at the sight of this magnificent show of honor. From one scene to the next, there was no pausing to do something else, or anxiety, or any dislike for anything in it. And that's how I remember movies to be. Lately, it's just all going beserk. TMNT was a nice surprise, and it shows there are some dedicated people when it comes to movies like this. And Sarah Michelle Geller was a real surprise...she was right for this one.

5 out of 5 stars Turtles still rock after all these years!.......2007-09-08

LOVED IT!!! From the previews I thought it was gonna suck because it was animated instead of live action like the previous movies were but this movie totally rocked! I thought the animation was fast, colorful, and it made the turtles look really cool! I still love Mikey! He's been my favorite since I was like 7 years old. This movie was a little dark, which I loved, and the fight between Leo and Raf was the best part! I hope there's a sequel!!!

3 out of 5 stars Thank god this was animated and not live action! .......2007-09-02

This film is okay. It appeals more to elementary school kids at most. What's good about this film is the 3D animation and the voice casting of the turtles and April and Casey. The only voice that really bothered me was Master Splinter's. He sounded like he had a dry throat the entire time. The plot is a little weak. It focuses mostly on the relationship between Leonardo and Raphael which is a disappointment because it's supposed to be about four turtles not two. They're also supposed to find 13 monsters that have been around thousands of years and put them in a portal. They've been around for that long and some how haven't made the news. Anyway Leo's supposed to be a better leader so he leaves and we find him in Central America or somewhere around there in the beginning of the film. When he comes back everyone, but Raphael accepts him back. Raphael has been moonlighting as the Nightwatcher, a vigilante in the night. Some how none of the turtles, or Master Splinter for that matter, figure out that it's him. Not that many guys looking to kick evil's ass at night and since he's asleep all day and out all night what could he be doing?! Another problem is Casey and April. Casey is going around at night fighting criminals with a bat and a hockey mask. Raphael I understand. I mean you see him wearing cool metal armor and he's got martial arts. Plus two small knives which he's deadly with and a motorcycle. You san understand why he hasn't gotten killed doing this, but Casey is doing the same thing and doesn't have any of the advantages that Raphael has. He doesn't even drive anything. He just walks! How come he isn't dead? I don't know. April is first presented as an archaeologist which is believable, but later we see her fighting with a sword against thousands of ninjas. Her and Casey make it out alright for some reason. The turtles are in this fight too and them I do believe making it out alright, but an archaeologist and a tough guy against ninjas? Come on. There are two more good things though. One is the music. When you hear it in the movie it just fits in with the scenes. Particularity a scene in where Raphael, as the Nightwatcher, is fighting a little monster. The other good thing is the opening scene in which two armies are fighting each other. It's a cool thing to watch on screen. However, this film would've been better if the story was different. If they had begun the story with the turtles origins and had then face the Shredder ending with Leo's departure it would probably have been more entertaining. This film has some decent action and voice casting(for the most part), but it is a film you could live without seeing.

3 out of 5 stars Decent family movie.......2007-09-02

Nothing outstanding, but it was a decent kids movie, my 12 an 7 year olds enjoyed the film. CGI was very good and there was lots of action and fighting.

3 out of 5 stars A little taste of nostaglia..........2007-08-11

I just recently bought this box set to relive my childhood. I grew up on the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. I watched the cartoon, collected the trading cards, etc. However, I knew that there would be no way I'd enjoy these as much as I did when I was a kid.

Although, I do have to say that the first movie holds up quite well. I still laughed as most of the parts I was supposed to laugh at, and the movie still felt dark. The second one not as much, but it is still fun. It suffers from that "dated" feel it has, particularly with the Vanilla Ice music scene that goes on for waaaaaay too long, and the poor "Tokka" and "Rahzar" costumes. And why does "Mutant Shredder" have clothes that fit him and spikes on his clothing that grew in size? The third one is slightly better than I remember, since I am less frustrated now than I was back then that no villains from the cartoon were in the movie. However, the movie still is not that great and is the most cheesy of them all. And Casey Jones' character was way underused.

In the end these are great for kids, but the adults will really only dig the first one - and only if they liked these when they were young.

5 out of 5 stars Great old classic.......2007-07-08

The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 3-Pak is an awesome buy. My wife is a real fan from when the turtles first hit the scene. The gift pack was just what she was looking for. I'd definitely recommend this selection to any TMNT fan!

The 1987 debut season of the wildly popular Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles' first animated TV series finally arrives in its entirety on this single disc. And while it's a pleasure to have these long-unavailable episodes in DVD format, the set's lackluster presentation and paltry extras also make it a disappointment for those hoping for a more expansive release. Volume One contains the five-episode "miniseries" that comprised the debut season and explained the Turtles' origins; the episodes are presented with opening and closing credits, though offered as single chapters on the disc. The "bonus" material is four episodes from the series' tenth and final season, which were largely unseen in the U.S. (though some U.K. viewers may have caught them). While interesting from a completist perspective, their inclusion clashes somewhat with the first-season episodes, as the series' look and tone had changed considerably by this point. And when combined with the disc's overall lack of quality picture and sound (video masters appear to have been used), Volume One represents something of a missed opportunity for TMNT fans; however, having the first season on a single disc may be an acceptable trade. --Paul Gaita

5 out of 5 stars An absolute classic cartoon revived on DVD!.......2007-04-15

I grew up watching TMNT, and was delighted when the DVD release of the original series was announced.

This release features the entire first season from 1987. This can be a little misleading, as the first season only consisted of 5 episodes: "Turtle Tracks", "Enter the Shredder", "A Thing About Rats", "Hot-Rodding Teenagers From Dimension X" and "Shredder and Splintered". Over the course of these episodes, we see many Turtles favourites introduced; Shredder, Krang, April O'Neil, Bebop and Rocksteady, even minor characters like General Tragg that were known best for their action figure counterparts!

To compensate for the short first season, a bonus four episodes from 1996's Season 10 (which never made it to British TV screens) are included: "The Beginning of the End", "The Return of Dregg", "Monster From Dimension X" and "The Day the Earth Disappeared". While these episodes are quite interesting to watch from the perspective as someone who only saw the first couple of seasons of the show as a child, they don't have the same magic that the old episodes had; the animation looks a lot cheaper, like many modern cartoons, and much of the humour from earlier episodes is absent.

Unfortunately, there are no documentaries about the cultural impact the show had or anything along those lines, which would have been very interesting. The only bonus features are the extra episodes.

I personally hadn't seen the first couple of episodes until buying this set, since the craze reached my school a few episodes in. An interesting note about the first season is that the episodes follow a linear storyline, and the episodes are sequential (some taking place directly after the events at the end of the previous episode).

The DVD picture quality is good. The quality is crisp, considering it is a cartoon from 1987. Some imperfections can be seen fairly frequently, though this is probably due to the age of the cartoons and the quality of the original broadcasts and not due to poor production values, as the 1996 episodes are much crisper quality. Sound has the slight imperfections that you'd expect from a cartoon from the 80s, and is completely listenable.

Menus are excellent, featuring great airbrushed art very typical of original Turtles merchandise and artwork from the late 80s and early 90s.

The DVD comes in a case within a foil-enhanced cardboard sleeve featuring some great artwork of the Turtles emerging from the sewer in the airbrushed glory of 1980s, cartoon New York. This is the most attractive of any of the DVD releases so far. Artwork quality on subsequent releases decreased significantly.

A fantastic trip down memory lane, and well worth the price!

5 out of 5 stars TMNT Rules!.......2007-04-06

I love Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and grew up watching them every Saturday morning. I think they are the reason for my fascination with ninjas. Anyways these episdoes are classic and I somehow remember them from almost 20 years ago. If you are a big fan like me this is definitely worth adding to your DVD collection.

5 out of 5 stars Just as good as it was 20 years ago!.......2007-02-11

This DVD contains all 13 episodes from the second season of the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles series from the 80s. And if you grew up on these shows, like I did, then you will be pleasantly surprised to see them here "again for the first time."

Obviously the cartoon is geared towards kids, that's why we watched it two decades ago when we were kids. For the reviewers complaining about the poor drawings and lack of action, what did you expect? Were you a brilliant cartoon critic when you were [...]? No, but I bet you appreciated the ninja turtles for what they are.

For a little under $9.00 on Amazon, you can get all 13 episodes from the second season. I can't think of a better deal than that. Unlike other shows from the 80s that have lost most of their appeal today, the stories are still interesting and the jokes, while lame, are lame enough to still be funny. The opening sequence with the theme song is just as exciting today as it was when the episodes were originally aired.

These episodes contain some great stuff. Shredder comes back from Dimension X to destroy the turtles by Krang's demands. Baxter Stockman is freed from prison, and eventually becomes the mutant fly we know him as. Bebop and Rocksteady show up again. April O'Neill gets mutated into a catwoman, Splinter gets a brief stint as a human again, Napoleon Bonafrog (and three other mutated frogs are created), the Neutrinos appear for an episode, and Shredder launches all kinds of bumbled attempts to attack the turtles, before Krang ultimately comes back from Dimension X in the Technodrome.

Children of the 80s, don't miss this DVD!

4 out of 5 stars Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles animated series.......2007-01-09

This is the old series which aired on TV in the eighties. My 22 year old daughter thinks it's great that her seven year old brother is now watching one of her favorite cartoons when she was little! Although he says the turtles in this series "look like babies", because he is accustomed to the sleeker, more modern look of the turtles in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles-Fast Forward, which is what is airing on TV now, he nevertheless enjoys the old series and owns volumes 1-4. I consider them money well spent!

I would have given this 5 stars, but the dialogue from the old series is really silly and not as well-written as the more recent 2 series and the movies which were geared to entertain adults as well as little kids.

The last volume of Lionsgate as they plan to release the rest of eps of TMNT in season sets instead of individual volumes. This one ends the Season 3 and the last ep Plan 6 from Outer Space have diff ending credits and it's marked copyright 1990.The eps mainly focuses on the rising of the Technodrome from the center of Earth to the surface and the conquering of the world by Krang which fails due the incompetence of Bebop and Rocksteady. In the last ep the Turtles won a trip to Europe grom a Pizza brand ad thing that we won't see until season 7.I'm waiting to see the 4th season sets.

5 out of 5 stars TMNT are back.......2006-12-12

Finally, the last episodes of season 3. These episodes are just as good as the ones on volume 5, if not better. The last 3 episodes of season 3, "The Big" three-part story arch, has to be the best story of the entire run, giving an excellent conclusion to the best season of TMNT. Volume 6 also has the first episode of season 4 and that episode takes place right after The Big Blow out and sets the stage for the european vacation story arch. As great as the three-part-finale is, there are also other great episodes, the most notable episode is Shredderville, which is a rather darker than usual, alternetive reality-based episode. Very enjoyable and a fan favourite. Other great episodes are The Great Boldini, The Missing Map and The Turtle Terminator, which is a very silly but hilarious episode, sort of a guilty pleasure. Many recurring characters return, like The Rat King, Baxter Stockman and General Tragg. The Shredder and Krang are also as brilliant as ever. I recommend Vol. 6 for fans of TMNT or just any fan of good entertainment.

    5 out of 5 stars Season 3 finally finishes.......2006-12-11

It may not be the longest running cartoon or children's program, but you have to admit, the original Ninja Turtles show definitely is a rarity in the animation world: not only did it total an impressive 10 seasons, but a respectable 193 episodes as well. Vol. 6 finally wraps up the show's 3rd season (at this point, the series was still in syndication and not on Saturdays), with some fun episodes like Shredderville which features the Turtles stuck in a nightmarish alternate-reality where Shredder rules Manhattan, all mutants are outlawed, and an unstable Technodrome is stuck in the middle of town and threatening to explode at any second; Bye Bye Fly, which brings back Baxter Fly for yet another confrontation with the mutants; and the Turtle Terminator, in which the Turtles fight a killer robot duplicate of Irma(this episode also features Hal Rayle and Greg Berg performing the respective roles of Raphael and Donatello instead of the usual Rob Paulsen and Barry Gordon). Best of all, some of these episodes are actually new to me. There were a few episodes that I sadly missed when I watched it back in 1989, so I'm thankful for the DVD release so I can finally see these for the first time.

Season 3's finale marked another multi-part arc, this time a 3-parter that notably has the words "The Big" at the beginning of each title. As we remembered at the end of season 2 (aka vol. 2), Shredder and Krang's giant mechanical moving fortress, the Technodrome, escaped Dimension X, only to wind up being buried in the Earth's core and left low on power, thus keeping it from escaping its prison. The past season focused on the bad guys trying to find an energy source to restore it to its full strength. Now, the Technodrome has at last been restored to normal (thanks to Bebop and Rocksteady of all characters!), and the Turtles must now stop it with the fate of the entire planet hanging in the balance. Part 2: The Big Break-In is another episode I've never seen before, so I'm really happy to finally see all three parts in order. (I actually saw part 3 first, so I was shocked to see the Technodrome suddenly pop up out of nowhere).

The final episode, as well as the first episode of the show's 4th season, Plan 6 from Outer Space, notable for its title sendup of the infamous Ed Wood film Plan 9 from Outer Space, serves as not only an epilogue to the 3-parter but a lead in to the next arc as well. At the end of the episode Michelangelo winds up winning a vacation in Europe, which sends the Turtles vacationing throughout the country for the next 10 or so episodes. However, although these episodes were made, they didn't air until the show's 7th season. Whether these will wind up on vol 7 in production order or on a much future volume in airdate order we'll have to wait and see.

I'm happy that Lion's Gate is at least getting better at bringing the releases out (as opposed to where we had to wait a year for the second volume!), and unlike Disney's multiple Disney Afternoon-era DVD sets, the quality and menus are at least decent, although I still wish we had some sort of bonus material. Still, the low price range and the fact that it has 2-4 times the amount of episodes most single DVD sets have still make it a good pickup, especially if you've been a huge fan of this show like myself.

5 out of 5 stars SO much better than the new ones..........2007-08-23

I have a little boy who recently discovered TMNT, so I bought some of the new movies for him. I was disturbed by the content of the new ones- definitely inappropriate for a 5 year old, so unfortunately they got "lost." I was so happy to discover that you can buy the originals! They even say on the back for 5 and up, where the new ones are rated TVPG. Awesome buy, and it's fun for me to watch them again, too...now if they would only bring back the TMNT cereal...

5 out of 5 stars Old time fun.......2007-07-24

I loved this show when I was a kid and still love it. Even my little brothers love them.

4 out of 5 stars Some days it DOES pay to come out of your shell!.......2007-02-19

For a little under $9.00 on Amazon, you can get 12 episodes from the third season. I can't think of a better deal than that. Unlike other shows from the 80s that have lost most of their appeal today, the stories are still interesting and the jokes, while lame, are lame enough to still be funny. The opening sequence with the theme song is just as exciting today as it was when the episodes were originally aired.

Volume 3 contains episodes with Irma becoming a giant, Splinter and Shredder switching bodies, Donatello mimicking Humphrey Bogart for an entire episode, Shredder reversing the effects of gravity, April being mistaken for a princess, and a young kid becoming the "fifth turtle". Although the plot setups aren't quite as good as in seasons one and two, they still play nicely to those of us who grew up watching them.

Like the other TMNT Season collections, this DVD has no extras, but really 12 episodes is enough of a treat in itself.

    5 out of 5 stars Great DVD.......2006-12-30

I really can't remember the episodes as a child, but I do remember that I would sit down to watch the Ninja Turtles; they were my favorite back then and still are now as a teenager. Out of the first three volumes, volume three is my favorite; I find the episodes a bit more entertaining for some reason I can't explain. I enjoyed all twelve episodes, particularly "The Fifth Turtle". I recommend this DVD for anyone who wants to sit down, relax, and enjoy a nice set of cartoons.

5 out of 5 stars Despite a few new cartoon voices, this volume is still tubular.......2007-02-21

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Volume 4 has some great stuff on it. Baxter Stockman comes back (along with the Rat King), Casey Jones is introduced (sounding like a breathy Clint Eastwood), Shredder thinks that he's Michelangelo when a duplicating experiment goes wrong, an alien tourist almost almost sucks up all of New York with his camera, Raphael, Michelangelo, and Leonardo are given a love potion and fall in love with Irma, while Rocksteady falls in love with April, and Shredder and Krang flood the city and send a giant squid after the turtles.

Every episode on this volume is classic. The one drawback to this collection is that on a few episodes some of the characters have different voices. Most notable are Donatello and Krang, who get terrible replacement voices for a few episodes.

But overall, these episodes will really remind you why this show was such a hit in the late 80s-early 90s and why we loved it so much as kids. If you watched this show at all, these episodes will bring it all back. There's plenty of cheesy jokes and ridiculous action.

And if you're looking for (not so) sneaky subversion, in one episode after Shredder throws a smoke bomb, Michelangelo looks right at the camera and quips "Dude. I hate it when people smoke and run." That's the stuff that makes children's cartoons into classics!

5 out of 5 stars Great Price, Great Episodes........2006-11-18

There isnt really much i can add that hasnt been said already. Extras would be cool, yet without them, they keep the price extremly low. Usually a series on DVD with extras would cost as much as 2 DVDs without extras. I personally would pefer 2 DVDs instead of 1 with extras, so i am thankfull the ninja turtles DVDs are cheap.

I dont know why some reviewers state the show is "still very-watchable", i disagree, i think the show is brilliant and each episode is more times than not a gem. Im 25 and i watched the Turtles at the peak when they first came out, i still find them very entertaining and this volume continues the trend. "Leatherhead: Terror of the Swamp" & "Casey Jones - Outlaw Hero" are very good episodes and are terrific charaters that appear in later episodes.

Volume 4 hasnt got THE best set of episodes, yet while it has some very ordinary eps it also has some great ones. You are still going to be very happy with this purchase.

    4 out of 5 stars Original Turtles.......2006-08-01

I definately enjoyed this DVD, but it helps when you grew up watching it. This is not the best set of episodes in the series by any means. The first season had the best five episodes by far, but the episodes do get better after this lull. The next volume will get better (I think they got new writers) and from then on it's smoothe sailing until about season 8 or so when they get rid of shredder and the you know what hits the fan.

There were some bad sound tracks on this DVD notably Krangs voice in Green with Jealousy. And it doesn't have any special features either.

Personally I loved this DVD and have every intention on buying every volume to come, but that's cause I'm a hardcore fan. I don't need special features. I just need more episodes and an affordable price.

If you liked the turtles but you weren't a huge fan, then buy Volume 1 and wait to buy volumes 5+.

5 out of 5 stars Cowabunga! Awesome Turtle Power Dude!!! .......2006-07-11

I purchased this for my 6 yr old son because he absolutely loves TMNT and because I feel the originals are better oriented for smaller children. The newer TMNT versions that are on Saturday mornings or on DVD seem to be more violent and geered towards older children. As for my son's review of these originals: he says "Cowabunga, Turtle Power!!!"

You can chalk it up to good timing and a heavy dose of video-game synergy, but this 1990 hit remains the box-office champ of independent films, with a total gross of $135 million. Of course the Turtles began as a phenomenally successful Nintendo video game, so it was a given that the movie would be a hit with its target audience of rabid young video addicts. This is what comic books fans call "the origin story," in which we learn how a foursome of small turtles were mutated by a green radioactive goo and turned into human-sized turtle crime fighters. Their large rodent mentor, Splinter, teaches them to master the martial arts. They're also gifted pop musicians, by the way (think of them as amphibious Spice Guys), so they can rock the house while they're cracking a crime wave with the help of their cute friend and television reporter April O'Neil (Judith Hoag). The script is terrible, of course, but countless millions of children don't seem to care, as long as the Turtles keep ordering pizza and dispensing their wisecracking brand of justice. --Jeff Shannon

    5 out of 5 stars Memories!.......2007-07-09

A story that I remember quite fondly was going to the theatre with my father to see this movie. It brings back the memories of a little girl who wanted to be a Ninja and also wanted to be a whole list of other things too.

People who treasure the old Ninja Turtles should get this because it may as well be the only lock we have to our memories. :)

    5 out of 5 stars Very under-rated movie!.......2007-06-19

Growing up a fan of the TMNT, I of course saw the movie when it was first released. The thing about this film watching it now that I am an adult; it's still a very fun movie to enjoy.

I sat down recently with a few of my college buddies and we watched this film as we all grew up as fans of the cartoon. All of us remembered watching it when we were little and we wanted to gain a new perspective of it.

The movie is just down-right funny! It truly is. The character of Casey Jones just adds so much comic relief to the movie, and it gels perfectly. Along with the humor is the basic premise that stays true to the cartoon version, but also delvs a bit deeper. Here, we learn the true background of Splinter and just how exactly he relates to Shredder.

Another thing I like about the film is the fact that each character got their own very unique personality. Another reviewer described the turtles and their traits so I'll spare you that grief, but the character of April is also right up there. I was very happy to see that the character of April was really her own person, separate from the turtles. She knew when to stand up for herself and she knew when to lie low.

If you're looking for a movie that has action, cheesyness, and humor; than this is it. This is a movie you can enjoy no matter how old you are and believe me you'll be quoting it for days afterward!

wonderful movie to share with the kids and the turtles seem so real- maybe they are

4 out of 5 stars 4.5; chalk one up for good nostalgia.......2007-05-01

Back in the day, I was a huge Turtles fan. From the cartoon to action figures and whatever Turtle-y stuff was out there, it was usually mine. Of course, like all successful franchises, it gets made into a movie. Spawning 2 sequels and a surprisingly good CGI feature outing, the original is still one of those kind of films where you can't figure out if you're laughing at what you used to like or if it's just actually a good movie. One of the most successful independent movies around, it's still a solid piece of entertainment.

The city of New York has just been hit with a massive crime wave with reports of teenagers stealing anything and everything, as well as sightings of weird masked ninjas and thefts happening quite stealthily. News reporter April O'Neal has been making it her business to inform everyone which of course attracts unwanted attention. In come 4 mutated human-sized ninja turtles, Leonardo, Raphael, Donatello and Michaelangelo who decide to take the fight to the ninjas, dubbed the Foot Clan and their leader, the Shredder. With the guidance of Splinter, the Turtles end up becoming New York's saviors from crime.

Cliche story no? Except for the mutated turtles and rat part, this is pretty much a basic story but of course this is a kid's cartoon so don't expect much. It does have some emotional aspects to it, such as Raphael's bitterness/rivalry towards Leonardo and the groups love for Splinter. Is the script cheesy? Well of course, but that's kind of what makes it fun. It's kind of one of those films where it's largely supposed to be a fun romp and it's what you'd end up getting upon watching. What does become unintentionally funny though are the flashback scenes explaining the Turtles' mutation as well as Splinter's former master and his rival. Stylistically it's quite unique since it takes place against a black background but the puppeteering is so hilarious that it detracts a tad. But then again, Splinter is probably one of the best puppet characters around. Whether he beats Yoda though is another thing.

So how does this work as a film? It's actually quite good and it rarely sags. The pacing just feels right, the humor is silly but humorous and you can tell it doesn't feel like a completely low-budget movie. Only issue I had was at times there was 80's sounding music and I felt like "ugh, what an 80's movie". Other times though the score was actually good and certain scenes benefited quite a bit from it. Does it have any issues? Well again, people might find it funny due to nostalgia and a kind of "man, the stuff I used to love" laughter while other times the costumes looked...odd, like you were way too constantly aware that real characters were talking to humans in suits and not mutated turtles. Of course, I'm reading too much into it.

Ever buy a movie simply because it's been so long since you seen it? That's the case here for me. If you watched it way back when, it's nice to revisit.

4 out of 5 stars Still The Best Of The Three.......2007-04-21

You've got to give Steve Barron credit: any other director might've taken the live-action version of Kevin Eastman's and Peter Laird's creations and produced something more akin to the animated, kid-friendly television show that dominated Saturday morning cartoons for years. Not that this film doesn't have an all-age appeal, but who remembers the original comic book, which was far more gritty and mature than what public television might've allowed? Granted, it's hard to sell the idea of four anthromorphic, ninjutsu-practicing, pizza-loving reptiles to begin with, but once the magic of Jim Henson sets in, a rather simplistic storyline becomes a most refreshing display of kung fu, comedy, and rubber suits that goes beyond expectations.

These rubber suits are, of course what sells the movie. Create a costume of a 6-foot turtle that will look good in casual circumstances as well as in stylized combat, and you're close to getting yourself a winner. Master puppetry, coupled with fantastic athletic displays and individual voice-acting cements the four brothers (Leonardo, Raphael, Michelangelo, and Donatella) as completely believable characters, immersed in an underground (and, eventually, street-top) battle with a villian - the armoured Shredder - whose spectacle is kept revered throughout the film by an unfaltering darkness to his character, highlighted by real-life crimes of child recruitment. Insert Judith Hoag into her tailor-made role of the reporter, April O'Neil, and wiley Elias Koteas into the character of suave streetfighter Casey Jones, and both of their abilities to react believably to people in costumes, and you've got yourself a winner.

Well, maybe not yet. Though one can't expect much out of an action film when it comes to storylines, "Turtles" pulls it off by filling the fast-paced, quick-evented timeline with enough personality to make up for the relative speedy plot, which includes abduction, ambush, capture, retreat, reconciliation, emotional unearthing, return, battle-battle, and victory - all within 90 minutes. While I would have enjoyed certain aspects of the story (mainly, the time of the story spent between scenes) to be elaborated on more than they were, you can only praise the film for managing to plausibly tell the entire storyline of the original comic in the time that it did, by giving necessary focus on the multi-dimensional proportions of key scenes (ex: the reprieve at the farm, the Shredder's corraling of his recruits). In conclusion, the film pulls off the storytelling as well as and maybe even better than most other action films, securely a good mark in the field, but keeping it from being perfect (maybe if the film had been 30 minutes longer...).

By keeping everything in context with the original publication, and by throwing in just the right amount of quirky humor, the film achieves most of its potential. A $13 million budget and collaboration with Jim Henson pay off by producing a cult film which sequels have yet to top (as well as a worldwide profit of about $200 million), and which cinematic history has yet to render obsolete.
For fans of the franchise, this film is an absolute must-buy. Casuals viewers who find nothing wrong with talking, butt-kicking turtles and nifty kung-fu should likewise find no fault in this film. It's one of the few features that makes up for its shortcomings (the few that there are) with sheer fun and enjoyment. You'd have to be remarkably prim to not give this happy little masterpiece a watch.

3 out of 5 stars TMNT Original Series Season 4.......2007-08-23

I grew up on the TMNT's when I was a kid. I'm glad to see that they are coming back for a newer generation. I also like the fact they are bringing back the old 'original series' available to own on DVD. I had trouble finding some of the other seasons, but I was able to purchase this one. The episodes are very good quality and it was nice to be able to watch the old show again after all these years and relive it. Yet I was kind of disappointed in how the DVD set was. It was basically a box with a unique box, and the DVD was a cover and then 5 DVD's inside. There was no list of Episodes, no special features, really nothing but the episodes. Kind of dissapointing but if you are just wanting the episodes and nothing more, buy this set.

I watched all of season 4 and I noticed the two parter primetime movie Planet of The Turtloids is missing from the season if you don't want a incomplete season avoid this set and look for bootlegs online.

    5 out of 5 stars Classic TMNT.......2007-08-05

Let's be honest, this isn't one of those things you really need a review for. It's classic TMNT at its finest. If you were a fan of the show and still are, this set is awesome. 40 episodes of it for 30 bucks? Can't be beat.
