3 out of 5 stars Entertaining!.......2007-09-14

I thought the movie was cute, and with like all of Tyler's movies there is always an underlining message. I will continue to support his movies at the theatre as long as show my folks in a real and positive light.

I thought the movie ended too abruptly, and implied that they lived happily ever after. I always enjoy gazing upon the fine manhood Idris Alba.

Another problem I had with the story is that two people so very different actually getting together. I thought that that part of the story line was a little unrealistic.

It is me or was there an underlying message that encourge accomplished black women should take on men like Monty?

4 out of 5 stars CUTE AS EXPECTED.......2007-09-02

I mean come on this is Tyler Perry... we all know he is not a award winning writer. Yes his actors over act at times but it's the message that is in the movie. He reaches so many people so that's what is important.

Unfortumately there are all types of people in this world & mothers like the girls mom do exhist, the heartless Drug dealers do exhist, Women who can't find a good man definately do exhist & fathers who want the best for their kids do exhist...

I am a little bored with the thug/drug dealer dude. Must be a cousin lol.

I think that this movie was pretty good. atleast the men were not beating on women. I hope he continues to make movies. Practice makes perfect.

2 out of 5 stars Two stars -Shallow work that looks and sounds Authentic .......2007-09-01

The actors try hard but the themes of Tyler Perry's writing are sooo simplistic, heavily handed and full of cliches that I emphathize with their efforts. I know he's been financially successful with his formulaic work but Perhaps he underestimates the sophistication of his potential audience. Too bad, that as a black woman, I find much of his message insulting. I understand that the so called positive here is in informing us ( who ?) about the existence of responsible, working class black fathers. But it's countered by the same, old tired cliche that well educated, professional black women are bitter, lonely, singles who are so desperate for a man ( sex) that they will SETTLE for ANY NICE ( meaning poor, blue collar, working class) guy. Thus, although he maybe inarticulate, and unsophisticated and as a couple they have nothing in common, she will fall madly in love. Why? because she's uptight, and he's loose, available and not a lowlife. Honestly, how WILL they make a life together after they get out of bed. Oh, I forgot, this highly accomplished woman will also be thrilled to support his efforts to establish his own business ( so he doesn't have to endure the humliation of doing menial work.) And she will welcome his kids and gain pleasure from simple leisure activities in the 'hood. Give me a break !

3 out of 5 stars It Was Just Okay. . .(2.5 Stars).......2007-08-27

. . .But it could've been much better if more thought was put into it. I think Tyler Perry was reading a few back issues of Essence magazine and was inspired to write the film. The plot was predictable and almost every character was a walking stereotype. I could've wrote a better screen play. And having Tracee Ellis Ross in the movie made it seem like I was watching "Girlfriends: The Movie." Shoot, Tyler Perry might've been insired by the show "Girlfriends" as well. Other than that this movie was watchable, but lacked *serious* depth.

2 out of 5 stars Noble intentions, weak execution.......2007-08-17

**1/2

No one could ever accuse Tyler Perry of being the soul of subtlety - either as a filmmaker or as a storyteller. His set-ups are often painfully contrived, with characters who are two-dimensional and stereotypical, and messages that are pat and overly simplistic, to put it mildly. Yet, in this era when too many black characters are either rappers, street thugs, prostitutes or drug dealers, Perry speaks to audiences yearning to see a more positive vision of the African-American experience portrayed on screen. That's certainly an admirable goal, but the problem is that Perry himself is not above indulging in many of those very same stereotypes if, in so doing, it helps him to get his message across.

In "Daddy's Little Girls," the first ethnic stereotype Perry admirably endeavors to shatter is that of the absent or indifferent urban black father. His protagonist, Monty, is a divorced dad of three who works as an auto mechanic in a garage run by none other than Louis Gossett Jr. Monty's ex has pretty much flown the coop, leaving the kids to be raised by her mother who is currently dying of lung cancer. After the woman's death, Jennifer decides she now wants to raise the children, even though she's living with a gangsta' boyfriend who's so low he even sells drugs to the kids in the neighborhood schoolyard. This sets up a fierce custody battle between Monty and Jennifer with the three girls caught in the middle.

As stated previously, it is commendable that Perry wishes to make Monty a model for young male viewers to emulate, but in order to establish Monty's bona fides as a caring father, the filmmaker for some reason has found it necessary to ratchet up the mother's vileness past the point of believability. In fact, Jennifer makes Cinderella's evil stepmother look like June Cleaver and Carol Brady in comparison. Indeed, she is so over-the-top in her villainy that one wonders how such a seemingly level-headed and sweet-tempered soul as Marty could ever have been fooled into marrying her in the first place.

Perry doesn't do much better with the main female character, a snooty, high-priced African-American lawyer named Julia, who looks down her nose on poor working-class stiffs like Monty who takes a position as her much-abused chauffeur in order to make a little money on the side. Monty soon discovers that all the over-stressed Julia needs is a good man to bring meaning to her sterile, empty life. Thus, with the character of Julia, Perry manages to insult blacks, career women and specifically black career women in one fell swoop.

The movie makes some interesting points about the role class consciousness plays in the black community, with wealthy blacks sometimes more dismissive of their less well-off counterparts than are wealthy whites. Unfortunately, this theme is played out in the context of a fairly formulaic romance between Monty and Julia, with the "little girls" of the title reduced to not much more than walk-on roles in the story. Idris Elba is appealing and solid as the sincere, hardworking Monty, while Gabrielle Union does what she can with the poorly written part of Julia.

The narrative also suffers from what first-year screenwriting students (or "Crash" deriders) like to refer to as "coincidence overload," with characters bumping into one another at all-too-convenient moments or just happening to learn crucial bits of information from news stories on TV.

"Daddy's Little Girls" starts off with the best of intentions, and there are certainly some poignant, touching moments to be found in the film, but the movie is so fixated on pandering to the emotions of its audience, especially in the melodramatic final reel, that most of the goodwill one brings to the project has pretty much evaporated by the time the closing credits come rolling by.

5 out of 5 stars Killer Movie!!!.......2007-09-12

Bronson had one of the most interesting careers in all of Hollywood, but you never hear it mentioned. Starting out in inumerable 'B' movies of the cusp of the forties and into the fifties and moving on to villiany in 'A' movies by the late fifties and through the mid sixties, Bronson had been a familiar face to audiences for twenty years culminating in The Dirty Dozen in 1967,his first semi-sympathetic role. Then he went to Europe and made a series of hugely successful tough guy movies, became an International Star and came back to Hollywood for twenty years of definitive headlining tough guy roles that paved the way for Willis, Schwartzzenneger (never CAN spell that), Van-Damne and the host of other macho-men parading through our cineplexes to the present day. He was quiet, soft-spoken, and old school. He was loved by his onset crews (which says more than any critics of his movies) and he never acted like a star. In short, while lots of pretenders get credited, he was the last true product of the Hollywood Studio system, only he survived to achieve greater heights under the new regime. This is one of his best films. It sums up his character on film as few roles ever did. Jan-Michael Vincent plays a perfect foil for the times and the ending still gets me. It kind of echoes the way he snuck back up on Hollywood.

5 out of 5 stars Biased by Questar........2007-05-13

This film indeed shows the contrast in film only action effects of the 1960's when it is compared to current effects available with the use of animation. I purchased the DVD especially for the scenes showing the use of the Questar 3.5 inch reflective telescope. The film itself is an intriguing interplay between bad guy number one and bad guy number two and which one will win. It is a film which you can sit down and watch and enjoy. Maybe you'll have a little sardonic smile afterward.

4 out of 5 stars A Bronson Beauty.......2007-05-13

Saw this as a kid but could only remember the ending. Retro at it's best. Chrome fuel tank sides on an MX bike? Love it!

4 out of 5 stars A killer of a thriller.......2007-03-05

The Mechanic aka Killer of Killers is surprisingly good and, unusually for Michael Winner, also surprisingly well directed. A one-time Cliff Robertson vehicle (which at least explains the pipe Charles Bronson smokes throughout the film) and a clear influence on the Wachowski Brothers later script for Assassins, it sees Charles Bronson as the mob's most assured and ingenious hitman for some reason taking on an apprentice, attracted perhaps by his sociopathic indifference to death. The first half of the film is so sharp that it's a shame the rest of the movie starts down a more conventional road, but the action is well-handled, with a couple of way above average stunts involving a crashing motorbike and, later on, a car pushed off a mountain road that is more comprehensively trashed on the way down than you've ever seen in a film before or since: this one doesn't need to go up in a fireball to convince it's occupant isn't walking away.

Unfortunately the sorcerer's pathological apprentice is played by terminally smug Jan Michael Vincent (the man who sued the paramedics who saved his life after a drunken crash for not managing to do so without damaging his vocal cords): ideal casting, perhaps, but he's definitely a below-par Dennis Quaid act as an actor who seems to think he's good looking enough not to have to at least try to act. Equally unfortunately it also features the inevitable Jill Ireland (the star's wife and director's former girlfriend: that must have made for some interesting conversations on the set), albeit only for one scene, and for once there's a rather clever and perfectly valid reason for her bad acting. It doesn't make her big scene any less painful to watch but at least it stops it from doing any real damage to the film. If at times it feels like a more ambitious film may have been lost in rewrites, there's still a pleasingly nasty ending and any film where the first 15 minutes are played without dialogue gets extra points in my book.

MGM/UA's Region 1 disc may only offer a reissue trailer as an extra (when the title was changed to Killer of Killers to boost business from people who might have mistaken the original title for a car chase movie) but it has a fine widescreen transfer as well as a fullscreen version of the film.

4 out of 5 stars bronson.......2007-01-20

I liked the movie when it was originally in theatres and always had a fascination with the characters charles bronson chose to play. This particular movie gives an insight to what may have been the attitudes and life styles of the "contract killers" of the era. It was fun to watch and full of action for it's time, not full of the gore of todays action movies where blood and guts are more important than the story.

5 out of 5 stars Daddy's Little Girls (Tyler Perry's).......2007-08-29

I had seen the movie when it first came out and I loved it. I enjoy Tyler's work because they are stories filled with reality, possibilities and most often a lesson to learn behind ever character presented in his storylines. I'd recommend this movie for a family to sit down and review together, for child abuse centers and for single men's ministries to show that in spite of it all the bad reports we still have some black in this world that love their children and want to be good fathers to them.

3 out of 5 stars I know most folks won't agree with me, but...........2007-08-12

I thought this was the weakest of all the Tyler Perry movies, my favorite being "Diary of a Mad Black Woman". I'm sorry, but a lot of it just didn't make sense to me. I wanted to love this film, knowing the premise of it, but there was just too many contradictive characters and scenarios in this movie to make it believable. However, the biggest plus was Idris Elba as Monty, who made this film watchable for me. He's an attentive, hard-working black single father who truly loves his children and wants custody of them - his role drives home the point that contrary to what is widely believed about black men not giving a damn about the children they bring into this world, there are PLENTY of men like Monty out there!! It's time they got the credit that they deserve instead of being pigeon-holed as deadbeats who don't care. I have to give Tyler Perry props for attempting to dispel a stereotype in the black community by making this movie. This was the main reason why I was so anxious to see this film when it came out in the theatres.

Beyond Monty's character and the three adorable girls, though, the film, the story and the other characters just don't cut it. The performance of Tasha Smith, who plays Jennifer, Monty's ex and the mother of the three girls, is so shamefully over the top (like mostly everything else in this movie) it's almost laughable. She's an uncaring, overbearing and heartless parent who only cares about bling-bling and is dating a notoriously feared drug dealer. How in the world, you wonder, did a good-hearted man like Monty get involved with a shrew like this?? To me, it's just ridiculous that custody of these children could be granted to her when everyone and their mama in the film (including the police) knows her live-in boyfriend is a gangster. Plus, what is Jennifer's reason for wanting custody, when she shows nothing but contempt for them and really doesn't want them around? Where is Children's Protective Services in this case? Didn't they do ANY kind of investigation into the kind of household that these girls would be placed into? I'm sorry, but this is not reality.

Also Gabrielle Union as Julia was just too high and mighty for me to feel any kind of connection with her, not unlike most of the roles she plays. In this film, she's an uptight high-powered attorney with an acrid and condescending attitude - a typical Alpha female whose career is her life, and money and status means everything. Yet she complains about how she can't find a man on her level. Well, excuse us. For someone who looks down on most black men as being trifling and good for nothing - especially black men who were NOT white collar - how could she expect to find ANYONE? It seemed extremely unlikely that Julia would not only represent Monty in court, who clearly didn't have the funds to pay her, but end up falling for him as well. Monty is strictly a blue collar working class guy, holding down two jobs as a mechanic and a chauffeur. Her buppie friends (Terri J. Vaughn and Tracey Ellis Ross) are just as convoluted as the movie is - they fix her up on blind dates with losers, and for women who are as class-conscious and picky as they are, the choice of these men as ideal dates for Gabrielle's character is totally ridiculous. One is a ghettofabulous, uncultured 40-year-old wannabe rapper who is "between jobs" and the other a charming, but cheating Lothario whose wife happens to be pregnant and has a houseful of kids - yet they have the nerve to look down on Monty, who is single, working not only one but TWO jobs and is trying to go into business for himself. Even with all this going for him, in their eyes, he wasn't good enough for their homegirl - but those other guys were? There is something seriously WRONG with that picture because that concept made NO sense whatsoever. There are more holes in this script than a slice of Swiss cheese, so need I go on?

Again, I have to say that I can appreciate the message Tyler Perry wanted to make with this movie, but this is just a hot mess all around. I really love TP's stage work, but this is a real comedown from what we saw in "Diary of a Mad Black Woman", and I'm not just saying that because there's no Madea in it. The entire screenplay is just all over the place and extremely uneven. If you are a fan of Tyler's work then you will love it, but then again, I am a HUGE fan of his and I didn't. Hope his next production, "Why Did I Get Married?" fares a lot better.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......2007-08-12

Despite the "no surprises" storyline, I loved the movie enough to watch it twice in a row - possibly because I am a hopeless romantic! The actors work well together to bring life to a simple story. I've watched several of Tyler Perrys' productions and loved everyone of them. I must say he is making great strides in offering etertainement that is wholesome, funny and delivers a message without over sermonizing it. Plizzz keep up the good work! This is a must watch for all you sentimentals out there.

4 out of 5 stars A Great Family Movie.......2007-08-09

This movie was really great! I enjoyed watching it over and over again. The ending seemed a bit rushed but otherwise a great movie.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful.......2007-07-18

Wonderful writing. It shows the positive side of the African American Culture. So many of our brothers are raising their children these days. Great Movie, Glas I bought it. Go Tyler Perry, Gods speed.

I.Q. has all the elements of a classic romantic comedy. Certainly Meg Ryan has demonstrated she has the stuff for funny love with films such as When Harry Met Sally... and Sleepless in Seattle, and director Fred Schepisi's Roxanne ranks among top contemporary romantic comedies. Even though Tim Robbins received acclaim for dramatic work in Jacob's Ladder and The Shawshank Redemption, his early comedic work shouldn't be forgotten (well, maybe Howard the Duck, but not the hilarious Sure Thing). And Walter Matthau? No explanation needed.

Combine I.Q.'s talent with its fresh story and it charms. Garage mechanic Ed Walters (Robbins) is captivated at first glimpse by pretty, perky Catherine (Ryan), a gifted academic who lives with her uncle, Albert Einstein (a brilliant Matthau). Catherine is engaged to pretentious James Moreland (the oh-so-appropriate English actor and writer Stephen Fry). Catherine's early 1950s world is all bookish and brainy, even though she has aspirations toward the romantic (Moreland's idea of a honeymoon is the Belgian Congo with Pygmies; she longs for Hawaii). Einstein and his professor pals, played by Lou Jacobi, Gene Saks, and Joseph Maher, conspire to match their beloved Catherine with the sincere and smart (though not intellectual) Ed.

This is a sweet--but not saccharine--story about "engineering" the course of true love and the ironic triumph of heart over head. The topnotch performances (which also include Tony Shalhoub and Frank Whaley as fellow mechanics) really draw audiences into this winning movie. --N.F. Mendoza

4 out of 5 stars It's a no-brainer - "I.Q." is a fun movie.......2007-05-01

I just rediscovered this little gem of a movie on DVD recently and, as soon as I watched it, remembered why I had liked it so much when it was released in the `90's. While one of the major elements of the plot is quite far-fetched - that is, fooling everyone into believing that an auto mechanic is a nuclear physicist - the story is so well executed by all of the members of the cast that it works perfectly. The result is a light-hearted comedy with the anomaly of Albert Einstein (!) as a major player in the action.

Garage mechanic Ed Walters (Tim Robbins) falls in love at first sight with Catherine Boyd (Meg Ryan), but he doesn't yet know how he can possibly win her away from the "lesser professor," James Moreland (Stephen Fry), to whom she is already engaged. Serendipity comes into play when Catherine accidentally leaves her watch at the garage; Ed goes to her address to return it to her and finds out that she lives with her uncle, Albert Einstein (played to gleeful perfection by Walter Matthau). Einstein and his cronies (also played with joy and verve by several co-stars) provide the vast majority of the laughs as they set about to make sure that Catherine doesn't resign herself to a drab life with the "chimp pimp" but instead falls in love with vibrant Ed.

There is not a bad performance in this film, the 1950's are recreated with a great sense of nostalgia, and the scenery is beautiful as well (New Jersey lives up to its `Garden State' nickname in this one). The movie is rated PG for "Some mild language," but there are fewer profanities than you can count on one hand (and these truly are mild); I dislike profanity in movies, but I must admit that I can't even recall exactly when in the movie any of the instances of it occurred in this one. Other than two brief instances of sexual innuendo (nothing truly crude, but not as cleverly funny as the writers must have thought), there is nothing here that would be objectionable to anyone. What is here is a pleasant, well-done movie, and I recommend it.

3 out of 5 stars very good.......2007-03-09

una pelicula super solida que permite ver el romance en todos los aspectos

5 out of 5 stars Excellent in Every Aspect.......2006-11-26

I miss Walter Matthau. I believe this to be one of his finer movies. As much as anything Einstein seems to fascinate the public, Matthau's portrayal of Him simply adds his persona. Although somewhat in a better light and greatly fictionalized.
This movie is completely charming, funny and one to be watched over and over again without loosing it's ability to entertain.
Meg Ryan was perfect as Einstein's niece in the film and did an outstanding job as both a thinker and being a bit dizzy at times in common sense matters. She added greatly to the success of this gem as she does with most everything that she has appeared in.
If you're looking for a decent, funny, and at times heartwarming movie this is where you should be. You won't be disappointed.

The simple pleasure of watching a living car squirt oil in a villain's face just never goes away. Disney, in their effort to revitalize the Herbie franchise, has made the wise choice of not trying too hard--aside from a small bit of skateboarding action, just about every element of Herbie: Fully Loaded would fit right into the 1963 original (groovily titled The Love Bug) or its various sequels. Maggie Peyton (Lindsay Lohan, the fiery-tressed starlet of Mean Girls and Freaky Friday) wants to join her family's dynasty of race car drivers, but her father (Michael Keaton, Batman Returns) worries that she'll get hurt. Instead, as a college graduation gift, he buys her a junked-out Volkswagen Beetle--which turns out to be Herbie, a car with a mind of its own. Soon Maggie and Herbie are racing against an arrogant racing champion (Matt Dillon, Crash, There's Something About Mary) and duking it out with monster trucks, eventually hoping her father's heart will change. Herbie: Fully Loaded is formulaic fluff, but executed with cheerful enthusiasm; everyone involved has clearly embraced the mix of slapstick hijinks and light family drama. There's even a handful of cameos by NASCAR drivers. The result is every bit as ridiculous yet entertaining as its forebears. --Bret Fetzer

Though a third-generation member of a NASCAR family, Maggie Peyton (Lohan) has always been forbidden from following her racing dreams by her overprotective father (Michael Keaton - FIRST DAUGHTER). But she has no idea her life is about to take a huge u-turn! After discovering the irresistible Herbie in a junkyard, they form a magical team that will save her family and rewrite the racing record books! 5 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended!.......2007-08-19

This movie is well worth watching. I have the original four classics and thought they were great. I don't own this one yet but this movie is well worth adding to the collection!

5 out of 5 stars Great Movie.......2007-03-30

This movie is awesome. My older sister has it, so everytime I go to visit her I have to watch Herbie. Finally I decided I would get my own DVD of Herbie. It just came today, so I was very excited. The Music video of Lindsay is cool. Lindsay looks really good. This movie is so fun to watch. I recommend it to anyone. It's worth all the money. You will love it.

5 out of 5 stars Fun Movie!.......2007-03-19

We've owned this since it first came out & we love it. It's a movie that parents & kids can watch together. It's perfect for older kids who are 'too grown up' (lol!) for cartoons and yet whom you don't want watching movies with cursing & adult content. Great music, we have the soundtrack too.

4 out of 5 stars Go Herbie!.......2007-02-11

Lindsay Lohan fans, beware! If you are looking for a film in a "Mean Girls" style, don't go for it. However, if you like Disney's well-known manner of creating family-friendly films, you've got the right title.
"Herbie: Fully Loaded" is a remake of the popular film serial from the '70s about Herbie, a fast VW Beetle with a mind (and attitude!) of its own. However, in the 21st century, he's at the junk yard, too old-fashioned to be driven. There he sees Maggie (Lindsay Lohan), an ex-street racer, who is looking for a cheap vehicle to buy. She buys Herbie, and when she finds out about their common interest, the fun begins!
This film is a candy for kids and adults alike. It's not as sterile as "Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen" (another Lindsay Lohan-Disney collaboration, and not a very succesful one), but it's not nearly as sassy as "Mean Girls", either! It's a movie about friendship, love... and how a VW beetle can be a regular Cinderella!

5 out of 5 stars Great, fun movie!.......2007-01-17

My daughter begged and begged for this movie and I gave it to her for Christmas. She loved it and has watched it several time already. Cute movie!

Two men, best friends from childhood, are summoned to fulfill their agreement to be suicide bombers for the Palestinian cause. Khaled and Said (Ali Suliman and Kais Nashef, both making striking film debuts) believe fervently in their cause, but having a bomb strapped to your waist would raise doubts in anyone--and once doubts have arisen, they respond in very different ways. Paradise Now is gripping enough while the men are preparing for their mission, but when the set-up goes awry and Khaled and Said are separated, it becomes almost excruciatingly tense. The movie passes no judgment on these men; impassioned arguments are made for both sides of the conflict. This is a work of remarkable compassion and insight, given the shape and sharpness of a skillful thriller. Its psychological portrait goes beyond the Palestinian/Israeli conflict and resonates with fanaticism and oppression throughout the world, be it related to a religious, nationalist, or tribal cause. A stunning film from writer/director Hany Abu-Assad. --Bret Fetzer

Description

"PARADISE NOW" follows two Palestinian childhood friends who have been recruited for a strike on Tel Aviv and focuses on their last days together. When they are intercepted at the Israeli border and separated from their handlers, a young woman who discovers their plan causes them to reconsider their actions.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars "Paradise Now" should be renamed "Nihilism Now".......2007-09-05

Khalid and Said are self pitying Palestinians who blame Israel for their own culture's moral bankruptcy. They embrace a nihilistic ideology combining Islamic extremism with secular Marxism.
Israel is supposedly the imperialistic aggressor victimizing helpless Palestinians. Conveniently ignored is the fact that the Israelis have gone out of their way to live peaceably with their Arab neighbors.

These two existentially confused individuals have agreed to go on a suicide mission. We watch while they psychologically prepare themselves for their final moments on this Earth. "Paradise Now" ignores the anti-Semitism pervading the mindset of the Palestinian militants. Never for a moment is there an admission that Jew hatred and a sense of cultural inferiority prevents the Palestinians from enjoying productive and rewarding lives. A win-win solution is not considered a valid option. The Arabs will not be satisfied until the Jews are driven from the Middle East. You may want to view this film to better understand the intense hatred of these people for Jews and the rest of the "decadent" West. I cannot recommend it otherwise.

5 out of 5 stars Long Due.......2007-08-19

This is a film that needs to be seen. It punctuates the reasons behind so-called terrorism through the eyes of the victims of colonial abuse.

3 out of 5 stars It's the economy, stupid........2007-07-24

One sided view, but worth exploring as food for thought.

Bring the standard of living to Middle East, jobs, education, health care, everything that the western world has, and they would forget about suicide missions in an eye blink. Allah panderers and hatemongers would be out of job the next day.

Keep the region unstable and impoverished, and there will be unlimited supply of desperate and/or indoctrinated kids like these. Makes you wonder if someone out there benefits from keeping the Middle East a powder keg... Hm, some sticky deep dark stuff...

5 out of 5 stars Paradise Now.......2007-07-23

One of the only films to examine the phenomenon of suicide terror through the eyes of its perpetrators, Abu-Assad's intelligent, nail-biting drama generated heated controversy when it debuted in 2005. While the film dramatizes the murderous mindset of professional terrorists, it also provides insight into the psychology of those who murder not out of religious fanaticism, but rather a sense of futility and aggrieved humiliation. Taut pacing, agile direction, and great performances by Nashef, Suliman, and Lubna Azabal (as Said's friend and love interest, Suha, the lone voice of reason) made "Paradise" an Oscar contender.

5 out of 5 stars A puzzle of encountered feelings, duty, bigotry and alienation!.......2007-07-18

This is a hard movie that shows us the enormous ideological bariers in the other side of the world when two men are hired and designed to make a suicide mission working out as "human bombs".

But the theoric plans fall out when the human factor apperas and so both of them will take by different paths. One of them changes of mind and tries by all his means to avoid his partner takes over woth the original mission.

The dialectic confrontation, the confuse and awful dramatis personae will appear in this movie whose only default is its narrative pulse, extremely slow, supported by a discrete photography.

But these are simple details that doesn't permeate the dramtic essence of this engaging film.

Love the classic monsters Frankenstein, the Mummy, Dr. Jekyll, the Creature, Dracula, the Werewolf, and the Invisible Man? They're all here in this animated, 90-minute video--and so are the vocal talents of Boris Karloff and Phyllis Diller. After discovering the secret of destruction, Baron von Frankenstein is retiring as head of the World Wide Organization of Monsters. He's handpicked his mortal nephew Felix to be his successor, and his fellow monsters are less than pleased. Even though Felix politely declines to carry on this family tradition, the monsters band together and double-cross one another in comic attempts to expel Felix from the group.

The "Rankin/Bass Animagic process" of using stop-motion photography with three-dimensional figures makes this video a visual feast for animation buffs, but it is outdated compared to modern animation techniques. Humorous details, like the count looking into a mirror to comb his hair and seeing only his comb reflected, permeate the video and will have viewers chuckling out loud and on alert for potential missed laughs. This video is best for children from about 5 to 12 years old or adults who want to reminisce over a movie viewed in their childhood. --Tami Horiuchi

5 out of 5 stars Monster Party stands the test of time.......2007-05-13

I remember this movie as a favourite from my childhood. Whenever it appeared on tv - I was always ready to watch it. Even though that was a good few years ago, Mad Monster Party stands the test of time. The story is simple -Monsters gather to party, bad verses badder and yet love wins in the end. The humour is quirky, the songs catchy. The characters are the original group of monsters that we all know and were scared of. When you think that this was made in the 60's the animation is brilliant. You can see at times where Tim Burton may have got some of his ideas. The colour seems to have been inhanced - all for the better. I knew this movie was a favourite and having not see it for many years pleased to say it remains one.

5 out of 5 stars BIG BOOBED PUPPET/ SKELETON ROCK BAND/ I THINK YOU KNOW WHAT TO DO...........2007-05-11

Corny as hell, but I still like it. I bought this movie used from Amazon a while back, for my kid. I had no idea what I was getting into. This thing has a bizarre plotline, that leads our protagonist (a geeky-Jimmy Stewart-esque kinda guy) onto an island inhabited by his uncle Boris (rightly voiced by Boris Karloff) and an army of monsters that he created.
Uncle Boris wants to hand the island and all of it's secrets over to his nephew, but the monsters are not to thrilled. Mainly Francesca (quite possibly the sexiest puppet I've ever seen). She believes that she should be the rightful heir of the island, so she seduces Dracula into helping her destroy the nephew.
Dracula screws everything up, so Francesca decides to settle things herself (biggest [...] I've ever seen on a puppet by the way).. only her plan is foiled when nephew smacks her in the face, and somehow causes her to instantly fall madly in love with him (they make out like every five minutes from here on..) Once the monsters discover whats going on with the two, they decide to get even with both.
I won't spoil the ending, but this is a cool little movie to watch with the kids on a rainy day. The best is when a rock band of skeletons pop out of nowhere and play a song called Dance The Mummy.. but the campy, sixties take on a slew of classic monsters, portrayed as puppets is all gravy. Rankin/Bass the guys that brought you Rudolph and all of those other X-mas shows from the sixties masterminded this gem.

2 out of 5 stars Some Nostalgia Is Best Left In The Past.......2007-04-02

In theory, MAD MONSTER PARTY has everything required to blast you into your childhood past: the voices of Boris Karloff and Phyllis Diller; characters that are riffs on Universal horror classics; and animated by Rankin-Bass, which created such memorable holiday television specials as Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer. But at ninety minutes, MAD MONSTER PARTY is much, much too long for the very slight story it has to tell.

The story, as such: Dr. Frankenstein, who earlier discovered the secret of life, has now discovered the secret of destruction. He invites all the monsters under his control to his remote island, there to announce his discovery--and his retirement and plans to pass his secrets onto his klutzy and inept nephew. The monsters are not pleased and decide to off said nephew and use the new discovery to suit themselves.

The premise is okay, but the actual result is remarkably tedious. The script is dull, the occasional song atrocious. The pace is very, very slow. The character designs are uninspired. As for the famed Rankin-Bass animation... let us be generous here and say that in this instance it has not dated very well. This is essentially stop-motion animation, the same process so memorably used by Ray Harryhouser in such memorable films as THE GOLDEN VOYAGE OF SINBAD and Tim Burton in THE NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS--but without the same budgets.

If you are considering a purchase for "family film purposes," you can do a lot better than this. If you yourself recall the movie fondly from your childhood, do yourself a favor and don't return to it, for you will almost certainly be disappointed; some nostalgia really is better left in the past. The only people likely to find the film of interest are hardcore collectors of stop-motion animation--and even then the interest is more likely to be technical than anything else. Such fans excepted, not recommended.
