One Hell of a collection..........2007-08-31
The older ones were far better, than the more recent ones.
I could end my review here, but it would be unfair, considering the effort made to put this collection together.
So let's start at the beginning:
1. "Air Force" (1943) - B&W - 124 min.
starring John Garfield and Gig Young, is a simple tale of a crew of a Flying Fortress struggling their way from "The Day of Infamy" through the entire Pacific War. (Watch the B-17 closely, it was a true Flying Fortress and alas was lost in the process of fighting that war!);
2. "Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo" (1944) - B&W - 139 min.
Who doesn't remember Spencer Tracy in this one, together with Van Johnson and Robert Walker? This too, is based on a true story of WWII, but this time we're talking about a B-25 "Mitchell" crew and its deeds that led to the first bombing of the Capital of Japan.
3. "Command Decision" (1948) - B&W - 112 min.
with Clark Gable at the helm and based on a stage play, comes through from a different perspective. What do Commanders do, when it comes to gambling with people's lives (in this case Bomber Pilots and Crews), when the stakes are high and the mission is key for victory or defeat?
Assisting Mr. Gable (who himself was an Air Force Captain and flew real missions, hence knows what he's talking about...) are Walter Pidgeon, again Van Johnson, Brian Donlevy and Charles Bickford.
4. "Hell to Eternity" (1960) - B&W - 132 min.
The story of a man, raised in an American-Japanese family, confronted with the War in the Pacific. Based on a true story, this is the tale of a man facing prejudice from both sides and who manages to win his internal struggle by even capturing, single-handedly, hundreds of Japanese Soldiers. Incredible but true!
5. "36 Hours" (1964) - B&W - 115 min.
A "What If..." movie, starring a powerful James Garner. We are in 1950, the war is over and the lead Character wakes from a Coma in an American Military Hospital. He suffers from Amnesia, he can't recall anything.
Only that we are not in 1950, but rather in 1944, in a mock-up Hospital built by German Intelligence and the setting has carefully been prepared in order to find out where the Allies will finally land.
More than a true War Movie, this is far more a Spy Thriller, and tightly knit at that, so well told it is almost believable as a true story.
These are 36 Hours you won't easily forget.
Together with Mr. Garner appear actors of the caliber of Rod Taylor and Eva Marie Saint, together with Werner Peters as a Gestapo Man (an actor I love to hate).
All DVD transfers are clean and the sound although mostly in 2.0 channel Mono, is sharp and clear.
This is a very interesting Collection, even from a purely analytical standpoint. I must compliment the people at Warner's for having chosen 5 very significant movies out of dozens others and having offered them in this very reasonably priced set.
If more, of the same quality were produced, I am sure people would flock to buy them.
Unexpected collection........2007-08-23
I have been trying for some time to get copies of some of these films. I have not played all of them yet, I am savouring the moment. So far they have all been of excellent quality, and thoughly enjoyable. My only query is, is there a Volume 1?. If so where can I get a set?
World War 2 Collection, Vol.2........2007-08-13
I tried to watch the Movie,s of Collection 2.However I was disapointed. The Films did not have any sound. If I had known that, I would have not ordered them. That was a waste of my money. Sincerely, Horst Herting
Should have bought single selections.......2007-08-06
I wanted Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo, and always enjoyed Air Force and Command Decision, so the package seemed like a bargain. Wrong! None of the selections have scene selection. If you wish to see a selected portion of the movie, you have to run through the entire film. I had seen the other three selections and I wouldn't have bothered to buy them individually. I now have Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo, but it is a cut rate DVD and not worth the price I paid.
Good Collection.......2007-06-15
Some of these may have been available before now, but none in a WWII set that includes shorts and cartoons from the period. Pick any two you like and they are worth the price. "Command Decision" with Clark Gable as General Casey, a serious officer commanding a bomber group in England, is wonderfully realistic. "Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo" with Spencer Tracy as Jimmy Doolittle leading the first bomb raid on Japan is excellent. The others are just bonus as far as I'm concerned and a very good one at that. "The Hill" is a good military prisoner movie with Sean Connery as a prisoner. "36 Hours" with James Garner is good espionage movie. Air Force is resonably decent account of a B-17 crew that witnessed Pearl Harbor starring John Ridgely. "Hell to Eternity" with Jeffrey Hunter and David Janssen is about Hispanic boy raised by Japanese-Americans and fought for United States. Fans of WWII movies should enjoy the set. I recommend it. Especially for a Fathers Day gift.

Hoping for Something Better.......2007-05-30
I agree with the majority, that this set is very incomplete. While content presented on WW II is good, I have other issues.
The running time is approximately 810 minutes (not 892 minutes) on 10 DVDs in the standard cases, which requires at least 6 inches of shelf space. Only 4 DVDs were required, but 10 DVDs were used.
I mainly purchased this set for the 10 Military (Great) Blunders episodes. I was hugely disappointed that all episodes ran between 20:55 and 21:07 minutes. I have some of these episodes on VHS and they ran 22 minutes and I was hoping that original running times of perhaps 23 minutes, would be in this set. The problem is the History Channel (and the rest of the TV universe) keeps cutting runing times for more commercials. So, the original episodes no longer exists and you get heavily edited programs. Maybe, if the History Channel had shipped the original, uncut episodes, 892 minutes may have been correct.
Bottomline, while there are much better choices for WW II content, there is some unique information, so that you don't feel too ripped off. But, Cable Networks (e.g. History Channel) are the worst of the worst, with commercials galore and distracting on-screen logos. That's why we buy these DVDs, right?
Dreadful.......2007-04-08
I was pleased to see a new "supersized" history of WWII box set come to DVD, and being a superfan of this subject bought it. I wasn't expecting a lot of new footage but I thought perhaps a new perspective would be refreshing.
I'm afraid disappointed is an understatement in describing how I felt while watching it... "War Chronicles" (Mort Zimmerman) was never my favorite of the WWII documentaries, and this box set is built entirely on these old reels.
Patrick O'Neal's voice drones on like the engines of a tired old bomber on a long run to the heart of Germany. You hear little else but his narration over the canned sound effects through the entire series.
I was particularly amazed at the lack of footage devoted to England and the Battle of Britain. Literally a couple of minutes!
A far better choice would be the "BBC History of World War II", The "Definitive History of WWII" (Brentwood), "Visions of War" (Southern Star/IMAVision), or "The World at War" box sets.
If you still wish to have this box set, there will be plenty of very slightly used copies available very cheap, very soon!
Incomplete documentary of the War.......2007-04-01
Lacks adequate description of the Eastern Front. Biographies are superfluous and should have been eliminated for " the last days of WWII" History Channel documentary
THE HISTORY CHANNEL ULTINMATE COLLECTION: WORLD WAR II.......2007-01-19
Great service. Even with a late order date, it arrived in time for Christmas- thanks
The History Channel showcases what it does best.......2006-12-08
This is a great ten disc set showcasing what the History Channel always did best in my opinion - document World War II. I haven't liked how the History Channel has "mainstreamed" its offerings over the last few years, and thus this set is a real treat for long time viewers. It's also great for your kids to watch if they think that history is boring - it will change their minds. The following are the set's contents:
DISC ONE:
World War II: The War in Europe - Part 1
This disc contains four episodes from War Chronicles, a multiple-episode series of war documentaries written and directed by Don Horan, and hosted and narrated by actor Patrick O'Neal. Running about 26 minutes each in length, the episodes included on this disc were produced in 1983 and 1985. They feature no interviews, just O'Neal and at times, an anonymous narrator who, inexplicable, drops in additional voice-over material explaining in detailed narration over the graphic archival footage, the various battle campaigns. Primitive visual aids are used to highlight the action which at times consist of just O'Neal, pointing at a map. The episodes included are:
The Greatest Conflict: From the German Blitzkrieg to the Allies' bloody battle for Berlin.
North Africa...The Desert War: Details the German attack on Kasserine Pass, where the British 1st Army and untested American troops faced the full force of Germany's seasoned Afrika Corps.
The Beachhead at Anzio: Follow the story of the Allied landing, the brutal German counterattack, and the final Allied offensive that would turn the tide of this historic battle.
D-Day...The Normandy Invasion: discusses the largest amphibious assault in world history.
DISC TWO:
World War II: The War in Europe - Part 2
A continuation of disc one material. The episodes included are:
Pursuit to the Rhine: The Allies thrust forward under tactical air support to break through German lines, and the enemy resistance ultimately crumbled.
The Bomber Offensive: Air War in Europe: The Allies launched this historic raid on a German munitions factory and ultimately paid an extraordinary price in men and machines, but this battle would prove to be a turning point.
The Battle of the Bulge: It was the largest pitched battle in American military history, the last major engagement of the European campaign, and the scene of some of the war's fiercest fighting, leading to a final blow against the Nazis.
The Battle of Germany: The final campaign of the European theater unfolded in the aftermath of the Battle of the Bulge with the British and Canadian offensive, the historic crossing of the Rhine at Remagen, and Eisenhower's final drive to Berlin.
DISC THREE:
World War II: The War in the Pacific - Part 1
Again, this is just O'Neal explaining in detailed narration over the graphic archival footage, the various battle campaigns. The episodes included are:
Island Hopping: The Road Back: Follow the epic story of the Allies' island-by-island Pacific campaign in which they utilized massive amphibious assaults.
Jungle Warfare: New Guinea to Burma: In the jungles of the Pacific, soldiers battled not only the Japanese, but malaria, heat exhaustion, and swarms of parasites.
Air War in the Pacific: Chronicling the war's first days through the suicidal Kamikaze attacks and the bombing missions that brought the war to the Japanese homeland, this documentary utilizes extensive air combat footage.
The Bloody Ridges of Peleliu: From the opening naval bombardment, to the hand-to-hand combat and vicious guerrilla warfare, this is the complete story of this brutal and historic battle.
DISC FOUR:
A continuation of disc three. The episodes included are:
The Return to the Philippines: From MacArthur's strategy to the heroics of the ground troops, the 7th Fleet's naval forces, and the pilots of the Air Force, the saga of the Philippines is a story of unstoppable determination.
Okinawa...The Last Battle: Winston Churchill described it as the most intense and famous battle in military history. Witness the desperate, suicidal resistance of the Japanese in the final battle of the Pacific campaign.
In addition to the two War Chronicles episodes, this disc contains a 1995 episode of the Biography series, hosted by Jack Perkins. Perkins, who seemed to pop up on A&E every half hour in the 1990's, was a genial host with a trademark AM radio voice delivery that hooked people into watching his shows. Here, Perkins narrates a 45 minute tribute, with help from interviews with military historians, to Admiral William Halsey who led the Battle of the Bismarck Sea and helped neutralize the Japanese offensive.
DISC FIVE:
Biography: General Douglas MacArthur: Return of a Legend
This disc contains another 50 minute A&E Biography episode, hosted by Jack Perkins, discussing the life and career of General Douglas MacArthur. This episode is narrated by noted actor Fritz Weaver:
General Douglas MacArthur: Return of a Legend: General Douglas MacArthur was one of America's greatest and most complex commanders, a warrior so tough and determined that he helped win World War II with a simple promise: "I shall return." Featuring rare footage and interviews with MacArthur's comrades, family, and friends, this Biography program reveals the man who remains a hero to millions.
DISC SIX:
Okinawa: The Final Battle
This disc contains a 50 minute documentary made in 1995, narrated by Fritz Weaver again, exploring the bloody battle in the Pacific.
Okinawa: The Final Battle: At Okinawa, over 250,000 people fought a desperate battle for control of the island, in which nearly half of them died. Dramatic footage, much of it unseen for decades, captures the chaos and destruction of this battle, and military historians probe its lasting legacy.
DISC SEVEN:
Empires of Industry: War Planes of World War II
This disc contains a 50 minute documentary, narrated by Peter Thomas, exploring the planes that were used during WWII. This 1998 documentary is part of the popular A&E Empires of Industry series:
War Planes of World War II: Flight was born in America at the turn of the century. But World War II saw more planes built in a single year - 300,000 - than had been built in the previous forty. Modern shots of restored aircraft, historic footage ranging from factory floors to dogfights, and interviews with pilots and designers recapture the aviation industry's finest hour.
DISC EIGHT:
Nuremberg: Tyranny on Trial
This disc contains a History Channel 1995 50 minute documentary, narrated by Paul Sparer, giving a detailed look at the war tribunals in Nuremberg.
DISC NINE:
Great Blunders of World War II - Part 1
This disc contains four, 21 minute episodes from The History Channel miniseries, Great Blunders of World War II. These compact little docs from 1998 are fascinating looks at the fatal mistakes made by the Axis powers, that aided the Allied victory:
The German Blunder at Dunkirk: The 1940 Blitzkrieg upon Europe drove the British Expeditionary Force into the sea at Dunkirk, but the reckless plan of attack turned the chance to destroy the British into history's greatest escape.
Hitler's Declaration of War on the U.S.: Even with Hitler's forces ravaging Europe, America hesitated to join the fight against him. All that changed, however, with the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, and a foolish decision by Germany to ally with Japan.
The Pilot who Bombed London: One lost and confused German pilot mistakenly dropped his bombs on London, igniting what became known as the Blitz and pushing Britain's durability to its furthest limits.
Hitler's Flying Blunders: The Luftwaffe's lighting-fast, short-range fighter-bombers were used in support of highly mobile ground forces, a strategy which ultimately went horribly awry.
In addition to these four episodes, two additional episodes of Great Blunders of World War II are included: The Battle of the Bulge and A Bridge Too Far.
DISC TEN:
Great Blunders of World War II - Part 2
A continuation of the material on disc nine.
Japan's Mistakes at Midway: On June 4, 1942, the fanatical and efficient Japanese war machine wanted to finish off the U.S. Pacific Fleet, but their blind arrogance and underestimation of American willpower led them to disaster instead.
The Failure of the Kamikaze: Steeped in the ancient code of the Samurai, Kamikaze forces on land, sea, and air sacrificed themselves in battle in a desperate bid for victory that spelled ultimate doom for the Japanese Empire.
Death at Stalingrad: In Hitler's quest to take Stalingrad at all costs, he underestimated both the Russian winter and the steadfastness of the Russian people in the face of the Nazi threat.
Operation Sea Lion: In the wake of the British army's flight from France, the British were all but beaten. But a Nazi invasion of England was inexplicably postponed, diverting certain triumph and ultimately leading to the Allied victory.
In addition to these four episodes, two additional episodes of Great Blunders of World War II are included: The Bomb Plot to Kill Hitler and The Scattering of Convoy PQ17.
Description
The Battle of the Bulge: Nazi Panzer forces stage a last-ditch Belgian front offensive that could turn the tide of WWII. Henry Fonda, Robert Shaw and Robert Ryan in the spectacular recreation of a crucial campaign.
Battleground: Van Johnson, Ricardo Montalban and George Murphy star in this remarkable war film, nominated for six Oscars(R) (including Best Picture) about courageous American G.I.s caught up in the battle at Bastogne.
The Big Red One Special Edition: "The real glory of war," Samuel Fuller said, "is surviving." A decorated combatant with the famed U.S. First Infantry in WWII, Fuller survived. His 1980 film version of his war experiences did not...until now. Working with 70,000 feet of vault materials and Fuller's shooting script, critic/filmmaker Richard Schickel heads a reconstruction that adds over 40 minutes and transforms a truncated but admired war film into an epic masterwork. Lee Marvin, in a richly layered performance now revealed as one of his finest, stars as the sergeant of peach-fuzzed riflemen fighting from North Africa to Normandy and across Europe. The film is the squad's combat diary, war as it's fought and sweated and bled, and, maybe, survived.
The Dirty Dozen: Twelve jailbirds will earn their freedom...if they survive a suicide mission against the Nazi brass. Tough-as-nails Lee Marvin leads a nothing-to-lose convict squad of Charles Bronson, Jim Brown, John Cassavetes, Trini Lopez, Telly Savalas, Donald Sutherland, Clint Walker and more in the all-time action trendsetter. Where Eagles
Dare: The mission is clear. Get in. Get the general. Get out. Commandos charged with freeing a U.S. general from an Alpine fortress should also be told to trust nothing - including the search-and-rescue orders just issued. Richard Burton and Clint Eastwood go Where Eagles Dare in this twisty World War II thriller written by action master Alistair MacLean (The Guns of Navarone, Ice Station Zebra) and directed by Brian G. Hutton (Kelly's Heroes). Known for fiery dramatic roles, Burton ventures into the realm of movie pyrotechnics with dynamic efficiency. And Eastwood's cool-fire presence heightens one searing action sequence after another. The film became Eastwood's then-largest hit and its studio's #1 moneymaker of the year.
Customer Reviews:
Memory Lane.......2007-07-27
This box is worth the money just for Where Eagles Dare and The Dirty Dozen. Being a WWII Tank fanatic spoilt the other movies for me, trying to pass off an Israeli tank as a Tiger, no no no. Other wise a good buy.
WWII Collection Battle Front Europe.......2007-05-18
5 of my favorite WWII movies in one package. Super!
War Movies.......2006-11-11
Three of this collection are movies I have wanted for many years, and to get them in one collection is my reason for acquiring the set. Battleground is the story of a small group of doughboys stuck in the Argonne, basically surrounded by Germans, and their fight for survival. Where Eagles Dare is about a group of highly trained soldiers trying to destroy a fortress in the Alps controlled by the Germans; however, a mole and high ranking officer overseeing the operation want the group to fail. The Dirty Dozen is a war classic about criminals given a respite to carry out a basically suicide mission against a host of high ranking German officers
GREAT ADVENTURE .......2006-08-04
I have watched a lot of WWII DVDs and found that these movies while hollywoodized to an extent are pretty accurate. These movies will entertain you completely!!! This is a great group of war films and I enjoyed each and every one of them thouroughly!!! Cant beat the price either!!
Thrilling War Films.......2006-07-26
I recently purchased this DVD European War collection and I'm enjoying these wonderful war films at a price that's so affordable it must be seen to believe. This World War II DVD Collection-European Warfare includes 5 outstanding War epics that were received by the movie-going public as fascinating with a great story line and many action-packed scenes that most critics moved to give these films a thumbs up. It's difficult to point out which film ranks the best. You can choose any 5 exciting war epics, my favorites "The Dirty Dozen" and "Where Eagles Dare" were given 3-1/2 - 4 Stars. The picture transfer on all 5 are crisp and clear and the sound is remarkably full-bodied stereo. Five stars for a great collection of War films that can be watched over and over again.
Average customer rating:
- ALL 4 FILMS ARE CLASSICS THAT I REALLY WANTED MAKING THIS SET A 'REEL' TREAT FOR ME!
- Good package of war movies

The Thin Red Line (1998)
In recluse director Terrence Malick's 1998 comeback vehicle, the battle for Guadalcanal Island offers an opportunity to explore nothing less than the nature of life, death, God, and courage. Let that be a warning to anyone expecting a conventional war flick; Malick proves himself quite capable of mounting an exciting action sequence, but he's just as likely to meander into pure philosophical noodling. This is not especially an actors' movie, but the standouts are bold: Nick Nolte as a career-minded colonel, Elias Koteas as a deeply spiritual captain who tries to protect his men, Ben Chaplin as a G.I. haunted by lyrical memories of his wife. The backbone of the film is the ongoing discussion between a wry sergeant (Sean Penn) and an ethereal, almost holy private (newcomer Jim Caviezel). In some ways The Thin Red Line seems vaguely, intriguingly incomplete, yet it casts a spell like almost nothing else of its time, and Malick's visionary images are a challenge and a signpost to the rest of his filmmaking generation. --Robert Horton
Tora! Tora! Tora!
"Sir, there's a large formation of planes coming in from the north, 140 miles, 3 degrees east." "Yeah? Don't worry about it." This is just one of the many mishaps chronicled in Tora! Tora! Tora! The epic film shows the bombing of Pearl Harbor from both sides in the historic first American-Japanese coproduction: American director Richard Fleischer oversaw the complicated production, wrestling a sprawling story with dozens of characters into a manageable, fairly easy-to-follow film. While Tora! Tora! Tora! lacks the strong central characters that anchor the best war movies, the real star of the film is the climactic 30-minute battle, a massive feat of cinematic engineering that expertly conveys the surprise, the chaos, and the immense destruction of the attack. --Sean Axmaker
Patton
One of the greatest screen biographies ever produced, this monumental film runs nearly three hours, won seven Academy Awards, and gave George C. Scott the greatest role of his career. Scott embodies his role so fully, so convincingly, that we can't help but be drawn to and fascinated by Patton as a man who is simultaneously bound for hell and glory. Filmed on an epic scale at literally dozens of European locations, Patton does not embrace war as a noble pursuit, nor does it deny the reality of war as a breeding ground for heroes. Through the awesome achievement of Scott's performance and the film's grand ambition, Patton shows all the complexities of a man who accepted his role in life and (like Scott) played it to the hilt. --Jeff Shannon
The Longest Day
The Longest Day is Hollywood's definitive D-day movie. More modern accounts such as Saving Private Ryan are more vividly realistic, but producer Darryl F. Zanuck's epic 1962 account is the only one to attempt the daunting task of covering that fateful day from all perspectives. From the German high command and front-line officers to the French Resistance and all the key Allied participants, the screenplay by Cornelius Ryan, based on his own authoritative book, is as factually accurate as possible. The endless parade of stars (John Wayne, Henry Fonda, Robert Mitchum, Sean Connery, and Richard Burton, to name a few) makes for an uneasy mix of verisimilitude and Hollywood star-power, however, and the film falls a little flat for too much of its three-hour running time. But the set-piece battles are still spectacular, and if the landings on Omaha Beach lack the graphic gore of Private Ryan, they nonetheless show the sheer scale and audacity of the invasion. --Mark Walker

This set came to me as a gift from one of my sons about 4 years ago. He found it at Sam's Club and he paid about 30 dollars. Each one of the films included are films I really wanted so the set has been a 'reel' treat for me.
IN A NUTSHELL: SAVE $17. ON THIS SET VERSUS PURCHASING INDIVIDUAL TITLES FROM AMAZON
Within a nice outer slipcase you get 4 classic DVDs in their normal DVD packaging and wrappers. These are all releases that you can purchase seperately, but it is a little less costly to get the set. 'Patton' is a 2-DISK set that sells for $14.98 from Amazon, 'Tora Tora Tora' is $12.98, 'The Longest Day' is an edition no longer available directly from Amazon, but several Amazon sellers are offering it New from $15.98, and 'The Thin Red Line' is $9.19 directly from Amazon. It comes to over $53. plus shipping [depending on whether you get all the titles from Amazon or from vendors]. If you buy this set the shipping is free [over $25.] In essence, one can save $17. [as of today] buying this set rather than buying the individual titles, which is significant as these are not promotional DVDs and do in fact have all the 'special features' available on the individual titles.
***** THE TITLES *****
* 'THE LONGEST DAY'
* 'PATTON'
* 'THE THIN RED LINE'
* 'TORA TORA TORA'
Good package of war movies.......2005-07-20
The Longest Day is one of the best war movies ever made. And Tora 3 is a much better depiction of the attack on Pearl Harbor than that stupid Ben Affleck movie.
The Thin Red Line can be a tough one to accept. I had to watch it a few times before I liked it.
Three Magnificent War Movies but One Appalling Fantasy.......2004-02-11
It is up to the viewer to decide what is fact and what is fiction or what is utter and complete fantasy. But in my Opinion, The Longest Day, Patton and Tora Tora Tora are renowned war movies, 'The Thin Red Line' is not.
Maintaining a very slow pace throughout its three and half hours lenght, in the 'Thin Red Line' more Japanese soldiers are shown surrendering in the few hours of combat depicted than actually did the first three years of the Pacific war! (If you do not believe me, look up Tarawa, New Guinea, Marshall Islands, and Iwo Jima for example.) And of course the Americans are shown almost to last as the inhuman beasts and the Japanese as noble Samurai.
Following in the tradition of the racist epic 'Birth to a Nation', movies like the Thin Red Line and Pearl Harbor are rewriting ouf history. For example, in Pearl Harbor the Japanese are depicted as being justified in attacking, when actually the United States stopped selling the Japanese oil because they were allies with Hitler, making war on China, and had just invaded French Indochina.
I'll tell you why..........2004-02-08
To answer another reviewer's question: Why would you buy this set when you can get the individual films cheaper? You can't buy the individual films cheaper.
The version of "Patton" in this set is the 2-disc Special Edition, which is out of print except for in this set, and selling for more than the price of this entire set on auction sites.
So save some money, get the 2-disc version of Patton, and get three other great WWII films for free (essentially).
Two bad movies for the price of five.......2002-12-13
Let's face it...the Thin Red Line is the most boring war movie ever made. Tora Tora Tora is very outdated, and although it does show the attack upon Pearl Harbor from the Japanese perspective, it is very much outclassed by the newer movie, "Pearl Harbor,"

Product Description
This is a collection of two fascinating and very graphic films that were
created by soldiers on the ground towards the end of World War II as they
liberated concentration camps. The footage - detailed below - is quite graphic
in some parts.
The first film is titled Nazi Concentration Camps (1945) - Run time: 51:56
Audio/Visual: sound, Black & White
-
Compilation footage of Nazi concentration camps in the immediate aftermath of
World War II. The footage was gathered by the US Department of Defense as part
of the effort to conduct war crimes trials. This film shows actual scenes of
concentration camp victims and is quite graphic in some places. Some examples
of the footage in this very explicit segment include:
At Leipsig Concentration Camp, there are piles of dead bodies, and many
living Russian, Czechoslovakian, Polish and French prisoners. At Penig
Concentration Camp, Hungarian women and others display wounds. Doctors treat
patients and U.S. Red Cross workers move them to German Air Force hospital
where their former captors are forced to care for them.
At Breendonck Concentration Camp, Belgium, methods of torture are
demonstrated. At Harlan Concentration Camp near Hannover, U.S. Red Cross aides
Polish survivors.
At Buchenwald Concentration Camp, Army trucks arrive with aid for survivors.
Piles of dead, mutilated and emaciated bodies. Some survivors among dead. Huge
ovens and piles of bone ash on floor of crematorium.
The second film is titled Nazi Murder Mills,
1945/04/26 (1945) - Run time: 8:15 Audio/Visual: sound, Black & White
-
This is the first actual newsreel showing pictures of atrocities in Nazi murder camps.

Great Series, with one exception.......2007-09-06
I own all of the shipwreck series and I like them all. Except the PT 109 episode. A PT boat is tiny and the remains they find are like finding a pop can in the ocean. The history side of JFK is fine, but the effect at the end was like finding a lost fishing boat in the Mississippi River. Yippee. The others in this series are great.

The best movie about World War II.......2005-03-28
Is "Saving Private Ryan" a great WW II movie? Yes it is. Was the Battle of D-Day the greatest campaign of the war? No, it wasn't, D-Day and the period leading up to it and the campaign through France was a tremendous effort that brought men close to greatness, but it pales compared to the efforts on the Russian Front. As Lt. John Eisenhower said in a toast in Moscow, shortly after the war was over, "I propose a toast to the man responsible for winning the War... the common Russian soldier." So lay off Cyrus.
Everyone should see "Saving Private Ryan," especially those who don't appreciate what it took to beat the Germans and the Japanese. They don't know how close we came to losing World War II and living in HELL for generations afterward. The men and women who fought in this War against the Axis powers are true heroes, whether they be Americans, Russians, British, Indians, Philippinos, or dozens of other nationalities. The hell that hundreds of thousands went through is conveyed in "Saving Private Ryan."
"Saving Private Ryan" is more than just a combat film. The opening and ending scenes tell us that these were real people, with families, hopes and dreams. And so many of the men and women who fought the Axis never realized those dreams, for they bought freedom with their lives. Other scenes within the movie tell us that the men we are watching on the screen are more than just trained killers, but ordinary guys who just want to go home again.
But if you want to see the greatest movie about World War II, I suggest "The Best Years of Our Lives." It won eight academy awards, but it didn't have one scene of combat as it took place immediately after the end of the War. I saw "Saving Private Ryan" once, and that is enough. I can never see "The Best Years of Our Lives" enough times. Two other truely great films about World War II are "A Walk in the Sun" and "The Man in the Grey Flannel Suit." Like "The Best Years of Our Lives," these are stories about War and how it changes men.
My Favorite War Movie in an Excellent Set!.......2005-03-16
Saving Private Ryan, wow. This film REALLY grabs you in every way. It is dark, violent, and realistic to it's brutal extreme. It is also a beautiful work of art by masterful director Steven Spielberg, and the crew that made E.T., Artificial Intelligence, Jurassic Park, Indiana Jones, Schindler's List, etc...
You must see the movie, I don't care which edition you buy, "although this set is pretty neat!"
CYRUS...Why does there always have to be that 10% ???.......2004-12-04
This movie, whether it is 100% accurate or not, should be very moving to all Americans. The intent was to honor the sacrifices of our greatest generation, and give us all a glimpse of the terror those men faced. This movie was, and should be, life-changing. If it doesn't stack up to your intellectually superior standards, please just refrain from comment instead of undermining it's honorable intent...
Great war flick.......2004-10-20
Saving Private Ryan set the standard for what we, the public, expect in a war flick. The combination of special effects, grusome reality, well placed action, well scripted acting. SPR doesn't shouldn't be mistaken, as others have suggested, as to what war is really like, but to let you see through the memories of what war veterans look back upon. The comradery, the loss of friends, the carnage and brutality of war. This isn't for the tea-sippin' sissy college student who think they have the answer to life but yet to get one, so, in other words, this isn't for a person who likes "the thin red line". If you want anti-war and anti-patriotic flicks, see "All's Quiet on the Western Front" Saving Private Ryan is successful at showing us what AMERICANS had to go through during the Normandy campaign. Not British, Russian, or cheese-eating frenchies, but AMERICAN. We made this movie, CYRUS, so if you want to see a movie about the russians in WWII, why don't you ask them to make one. Hollywood is in America, they make movies for AMERICANS, because we want them and will pay alot of money to see them.
good movie, not perfect.......2004-07-16
Private ryan was a decent war flick, but was it the best? I wouldn't go that far. It was bloody and all, but it didn't have very good writing. Tom hanks is also overrated in this movie. This film doesn't compare to movies like "das boot", "the thin red line", or "cross of iron". The reviewer down below should take a chill pill, you don't prove your case by using tons of exclamation points and by calling people names. We all have opinions, and they should be respected.

Customer Reviews:
Out of their Element?.......2005-03-14
I was looking for some of those old National Geographic nature specials when I came upon this selection of WWII DVD's. I had a lot of respect for the quality of the National Geographic specials based on what I'd seen on TV over the years. I expected the same when I ordered this set of DVD's. I have to admit that the quality of the production is very good. It's the overall content that disappointed me.
The first DVD I watched was titled "Untold Stories of WWII". It had several sideline stories about supposedly little known developments during the war. The main subject was the Nazi Germany early-stage development towards an atomic bomb. The events primarily take place in Norway and you probably would enjoy watching the movie "Heroes of Telemark" more than this segment. There's another on the development of the other super weapons that Germany developed towards the end of the war. There's is also a segment on the Japanese mini-sub which segues into the next DVD I watched.
The second DVD of this set that I watched was "Pearl Harbor-Legacy of Attack". This and the final DVD of the series apparently grew out of the funding that the National Geographic Society provided for a couple of undersea explorations. One was the search for a Japanese mini-sub supoosedly lost during 12/7/41 and the other was for the USS Yorktown lost after the Battle for Midway. The modern day underwater searches were a questionable aspect of the Pearl Harbor and Midway DVD's. I enoy the views of sunken ships that have become technologically possible in the last decade or so. However, they did seem to detract from the recounting of the history of the two battles. There is a lot of good original films of the two battles, good narration and outstanding reminiscences by surviving veterans.
The Pearl Harbor DVD, I felt, was the most worthwhile of the three in the set. Frankly, I'd recommend that you save money and just buy that one. It gives a better overview of the battle than does the Midway DVD. The one on Midway seemed rather sporatic in its' narrative.
I'm still looking for those great National Geographic nature specials that I saw when I was growing up. I'm not sure what to make of the National Geographic's journey into the realm of history. Maybe if the underwater discoveries are put on the center stage and the rest was just used as background, I might have appreciated these videos more. As it was, the two battle DVD's seemed to be trying to tell two seperate stories simultaneously and I didn't think that worked too well.
