X-Men: The Last Stand is the third installment in the popular superhero franchise, and it's an exciting one with a splash of fresh new characters. When a scientist named Warren Worthington II announces a "cure" for mutant powers, it raises an interesting philosophical question: is mutant power a disease that needs a cure, or is it a benefit that homo superior enjoys over "normal" human beings? No surprise that Magneto (Ian McKellen) and his Brotherhood of Evil Mutants resist the idea that they need to be cured, and declare war on the human race. But it's a little tougher for the X-Men, led by Professor X (Patrick Stewart), Cyclops (James Marsden), and Storm (Halle Berry). If you're Rogue (Anna Paquin), for example, your power means you can't even touch your boyfriend, Iceman (Shawn Ashmore). To compound matters, someone previously thought dead has returned, and might be either friend or foe.

With director Bryan Singer having moved on to Superman Returns, the franchise passes to the hands of Brett Ratner (Rush Hour), whose best work is done in the big action sequences such as a showdown between mutant armies. But it's difficult to manage the sheer volume of characters when adding longtime comic-book stalwarts such as Beast (Kelsey Grammer) and Angel (Ben Foster), and one character in particular deserved better than an off-screen dismissal. And fans of the original Dark Phoenix comic book story might be underwhelmed by the movie's resolution. X-Men: The Last Stand is presumably the last film in the series, but the ambiguous ending leaves possibilities open. Look for the two writers most responsible for making the X-Men who they were, Stan Lee and Chris Claremont, in early cameos. --David Horiuchi

This would be a good movie IF it were not called X-Men. They have completely sabotaged the X-Men storyline from the comics. They came up with new stories, which is sometimes ok, but not here. Jean Grey is barely used, Storm looks weak and undecisive, and Scott, why did they even have him there? THe movie left too many things unexplained, changed the X-men Universe and forgot to give some depth to the characters. This is just an action film and only that. Only Wolverine saves the day and the movie.

Rarely does a movie make me so irritated. After all, it's just a movie. Call me insecure but I resent having my intelligence so obviously mocked. I'm glad I watched it on HBO for the price of cable. The thought that I might have paid to sit through this in the theater is just depressing. A thrown together live-action cartoon movie without depth, style, substance or a whit of genuine insight. A thinly veiled children's movie & two hour toy commercial. At least the first two X-Men were simple-minded mildly intriguing escapist fun. More intelligent than post-Connery-pre-Daniel Craig James Bond but less so than the Spider-Man movies. X3 is just money grubbing dreck that insults it's diehard fan base most of all. There is absolutely no indication that the filmmakers even tried to make a good movie.

I don't know what aspect of the movie I find the most tiresome. So much to choose from. Maybe the indifferent mailed-in acting by otherwise talented actors (McKellen, Stewart, Jackman, Berry, Paquin, etc.) Purhaps the silly, illogical, inconsistent, scribbled down script filled with convenient but insupportable leaps in logic is the most grating. The banal grade school dialogue and emotions are a good candidate. So is the lack of character development. To say the pacing is incompetent is to imply the director, scriptwriter or editor even tried at all. The poorly choreographed and rather boring action scenes were particularly irritating because the previous two X-men did, at least, have exciting action. I think what bothers me the most is the fact that it cost millions and millions to make and was made without the slightest respect for it's audience. That's enough. I think I've exercised my spleen & made my contempt plain enough. I feel much better now.

Quite good, finally..........2007-08-31

I was disgusted by the cliched and obtrusive politics of the first two X-men flicks. I almost felt like identifying with Magneto. But the action, when they got to it, was impressive and left you wanting for more. Someone wrote here at Amazon that this third instalment was less politics and more action. I don't remember whether the person considered that as a compliment. But it seemed like a compliment to me, so I picked up the flick. I was quite pleasently surprised. Or let's say my hopes were fulfilled. Great action, and no obtrusive catering to trendy liberals. Way to go, I say. Every film like this means a little bit more entertainment from Hollywood, and a little bit less propaganda. I only wish they had been more brutal with Logan at the climax. They could have shown some of his adamantium skeleton there. Remember the end of Terminator II? A good dramatic opportunity missed, a good allusion opportunity missed, too. The climax wasn't quite as climactic as it could have been. Wolverine's healing mechanism seemed to be a bit too powerful there for a while, and then it was all over, the climax, I mean.

Nevertheless, heartily recommended.

A Hottt One...BUT..........2007-08-28

For the record, the X-Men trilogy is among my favorite superhero movie collections. X-Men and X-Men United were dreams come to life...as was X-Men:The Last Stand. However...as a comic book purist,I have to agree with some of the other posts and say that X3 was a bit disappointing. Not that the action wasn't there, not that the suspense and the romance weren't there, definately not that the special fx weren't there...but I wasn't feeling the way major characters got killed off in the end, and even more agitating is the way the film ended in light of the fact that there's supposedly NOT going to be an X4. Questions are left unanswered about Phoenix and the characters she disintegrated and all we're left with is anticipation for the Wolverine spin-off and the rumored Magneto spin-off to the X-Men trilogy. Could've been a lot better.

I was shocked at how ridiculous this movie was. I loved the 2nd one and thought this would be the icing on the cake, but I was actually left speechless at the end. I could find nothing to say since I was so shocked at how stupid this movie was. It was a garbled mess and felt pointless. I truly was hoping to love it but instead I got the complete opposite.

This is far from a Complete set. Because it does not have the Two-Disc versions of the films. The first two X-Men movies have great Two-Disc sets and I was dissapointed that this set only included the Single-Disc versions. Although the third movie does not have a Two-Disc set I think there will be one in the future. Only buy this set if you don't care about the features, but if your like me buy the Two-Disc sets induvidualy or wait for and Ultimate Edition Collection.

Just the right touch!.......2007-08-24

So many movies from comics drag out the story, veer into disbelief, lack storyline, storyflow, or believability, or leave so many holes and gaps in the story that you wish you'd just read the comics and shot the director and writers of the movie.

Not so with X-Men! For once, just the right touch! Not overplayed, not underplayed, told us enough to make the story believable, didn't mire down in fantastical minutae, gave lots of nods to fans of the comics while making a movie that is appealing to most.

I did not give it five stars due to minor problems with the score, and one mis-cast of an actor which was mildly distracting.

On the shadowy periphery of society lives a secret organization of mutants - despised, deformed and loathed, they live in fear of a nation that holds them in contempt. They are comic book fans. And one of their favorites is X-Men, which tells the tale of a secret organization headed by Professor Charles Xavier, master of the mysterious brain device known as Cerebro and ideological enemy of the metal-manipulating villain Magneto. It's all very neat-o.

Featuring the extremely British performances of Patrick Stewart (Robin Hood: Men in Tights) and Sir Ian McKellan (Last Action Hero), X-Men tries its altogether best to maintain some shred of dignity even while adults with names like Cyclops and Storm leap around in spandex suits fighting other adults named Toad and Magneto. There's a lot to work with, so Mike enlisted the help of his MST3K co-star Bill Corbett for this hilarious RiffTrax!

A fine film.......2007-07-29

X-Men is the best comic strip adaptation I've seen to date. It has all the excitement and special effects that you'd expect, together with a class of acting that you don't see in many other films of this type.

The story concerns the two factions of the X-Men. X-Men are mutations from normal humans. One is lead by Professor Xavier (Patrick Stewart) and the other by Magneto (Sir Ian McKellen). Xavier believes the X-Men can work with humans. Magneto wants to destroy humanity and in a brilliant opening scene (shot in black & white) set during the 2nd world war we see he has some justification for this view. Patrick Stewart and in particular Ian McKellan are the main reasons to see this film. They add a certain gravitas to the proceedings that takes the movie to a different level. Having said that Hugh Jackman and the rest of the cast are all good.

It always helps to have a good director and Bryan Singer (The Usual Suspects) does a great job. There are some excellent set pieces and the film is kept to a sensible length. This is well worth buying at the right price as it does hold up to repeated viewings.

In Retrospect, the Father of Modern Comic Book Films.......2007-05-25

The first X-Men film is not really perfect, but in terms of it's timing and what it meant might be coming down the pike with regards to cinematic interpretations of comic books (specifically Marvel comics) it is pretty darn close to perfect. Lets face it, this is the harbinger of the comic book movie age that has, like it or not, made some exciting and high-grossing films. I personally think the majority of comic book movies fail and could care less about how much money they make, but X-Men is a bit more than that. It's a very good movie too.

I didn't get a chance to see this in theaters but that actually served the film well in terms of how I viewed the hype. I didn't care because so many did...that's the old punk in me in guess. So I waited and received the film as an early Christmas gift the following year. I actually watched it Christmas eve and found it to be incredibly refreshing and enjoyable.

It begins by showing us a young boy being separated from his parents at a German concentration camp in Poland. His parents are going into the camp and will be killed. The boy is desperate to save them and as the German soldiers hold him down he reaches out and somehow begins to bend the metal gates that close in his parents before being struck down by the [...] of one of the soldiers' guns. The boy is Eric Lehnsherr, one of the great all-time Marvel comic villains known as Magneto. In one fell swoop, Bryan Singer does something that I've always been glad X-Men writers did consistently, and that is allow us to sympathize with this villain.

We are then introduced to the primary plot of a modern day Senator bent on the granting the government the ability to force registration of all mutants. Then it shows how telepathic and mind manipulating mutant Charles Xavier and his old friend and rival Magneto fundamentally disagree on how mutants as a race must react to this oncoming repression. This is followed by the introduction to our primary protagonists; Rogue, a young girl who drains the life of all people her skin makes contact with, and Wolverine, an enhanced mutant with the ability to heal himself enough that his body endured somking of skeletal replacement surgery. His skeleton is made of an indestructible metal and he also has claws made of this metal that break through his skin anytime he wants to kill someone. Great characters that Anna Paquin and Hugh Jackman are able to portray well here. Again, Singer introduces these characters with relatable depth.

In short, Magneto wants to destroy humanity and the X-Men must stop him in an environment where they are not appreciated in the least by the public. Singer attempts to make sociological insights on those terms in addition to bringing great character depth. When you consider the number of characters and the length of the movie, these are not easy tasks to say the least. Then again, when watching the Usual Suspects it's quite obvious Singer has a knack for just this sort of thing.

X-Men is a very good movie but I won't give it five stars because it also contains some fairly annoying dialogue that I absolutely refuse to forgive. For example, the character Storm asks the villain Toad what happens when a toad is hit by lightning and answers her own question by saying "the same as everything else." It's not funny or witty. It serves no purpose other than to make Storm look like a big cheese ball, and that isn't really fair. Not to mention, who really cares what happens to a toad when it gets electrocuted and why is that even a question to begin with? Let's just watch the lightning bolt strike and see toad explode. That is really just a nit-picking though, as X-Men is still a very good movie and it actually gets more and more important in terms of movie history with time.

Great concept, dreadful execution.......2007-05-19

First I should say that I have never read the comic books and rented this movie hoping it would be a fun adventure.

The concept is a good one. I like the idea of mutants with different abilities banding together in different camps to harm or help the rest of humanity. Magneto has the possibility of being a sympathetic, realistic bad guy because of his past (shown at the beginning of the movie) experiences.

That is about all I can think of to say that's good. The movie starts slow, with lots of exposition, when you are introduced to the characters, you are not given any reason to particularly care about them, and it doesn't get any better from there. The bottom line is, the screenplay is terrible. It drags, there is never really much of a sense of suspense, and the characters are not presented in a way that one can pull for them, with the possible exception of Patrick Stewart's character, but he isn't in most of the action scenes. It's a shame, because with a great concept and some well-known actors, I would hope they would have better material to work with.

I can imagine that this movie would appeal to young people who enjoyed the comic books and already like the characters and world. If not, or if you are looking for something genuinely entertaining without plot holes all over the place, it is probably a waste of time.

Better than the first!.......2007-08-24

The second time around can be better, and in this case, it was! Just superb all around, and if you liked X-Men, you will like X2! The storyline was strong, the cast remained the same and brought more to their roles this time.

One minor complaint: please give Halle something to sink her teeth into! Give a bigger nod to the comic fans with Storm!

Possibly the Greatest Comic Book Movie Ever.......2007-05-25

When taking into account all the comic book movies that have hit the theater recently this may sound like a bold statement, but really it's not. This may be a large grossing sub-genre but it isn't really that many movies we're talking about. With X2 though, I'm inclined to go even further and say it's one of the best sci-fi action films of all time...seriously. In terms of strictly comic book movies, it's simply either this or Batman Begins. I say X2 wins even in that comparison, but I'm certainly willing to accept the opposite view.

The film opens with a brilliant introduction to a crucial character, the German teleporter Nightcrawler who looks like a little blue demon but possesses an intense devotion to Catholicism, and his introduction does not serve to assist in painting him as a hero. More of an anti-hero I guess. I don't want to ruin it for those who haven't actually seen it but X2 opens with one of the more memorable action sequences of recent date and the film contains three more specific sequences that are just as good. Magneto's inevitable escape from his plastic prison is one of them.

One of the other memorable scenes sets up the real storyline for X2 quite nicely and introduces us to other mutant heroes in the process. William Stryker, an inventive military man, is motivated by his personal experience with mutant-kind to actually organize an assault on Charles Xavier's school for mutants. He wishes to gain access to the mutant tracking device called Cerebro and destroy all of them. His teams' assault is truely great action-filmmaking. The X-Men and Magneto, with his loosely forming band of mutants who agree with his politics on how to respond to humanity, find a common enemy in Stryker. The relationship established between Charles and Magneto in the first film is really important here as younger mutants develop and choose sides. I have to say, if I were in their predicament I may certainly be swayed by Magneto's extremism. The character developement here for supporting roles is important to note. Mystique and Pyro are really great villains here with massive emotion behind their actions and it's never over-stated, but it enhances the meaning and consequences to action sequences so well.

The other incredible action scene is when Bobby Drake's family calls the cops on him and his new mutant friends. There are enough under-stated layers in this scene and the characters; Wolverine, Rogue, Bobby and Pyro, are still consistent. The police show up and Pyro reveals his wrath. I always get excited for that scene even though I know he's wrong in his reaction. I mentioned four action sequences but the fun doesn't end there. Lady Deathstryke, who has been brainwashed by Stryker, and Wolverine have a great fight scene. Other scenes during the climax are just as impressive and all the while we are given enough tid-bits of so many characters that we still manage to care and even get a bit surprised near the end. It's a shame this wasn't pulled off in the third film.

X2 is unique in the sense that the plot is secondary and the film's primary operative is to develop the characters for more climactic stories. I think the screenplay succeeds in this sense but overall the screenplay (written by voice actor David Hayter) is not one of the film's strengths and can require a more robust imagination to really appreciate. Overall though, within the context of a complete trilogy, X2 is nearly perfect.

i love the x-men series.......2007-02-09

when i was younger i used to watch the x-men cartoon. when it came out in live action i was very excited...and not disappointed at all. x-men united features wolverine more than the first movie did and adds some other great characters that you know will be in future movies. the special effects are some of the best to date and will blow you away. you really want to watch this in high def on a large screen tv with surround sound. i recommend this DVD to add to your collection. don't forget to buy x-men and x-men the last stand to round off your collection

Any word on Season 4?

This series became better with time, but it is very disappointing that Season 4 has yet to be released, especially given the cliffhanger of an ending that came with Season 3.

Just something to keep in mind if you have never seen the series . . . without Season 4 on DVD you'll be . . . we'll be . . . waiting to see how it turns out.

Coming into its own.......2007-05-08

Being a fan of the 1990's Animated Series (and finally locating the entire series collection after years of searching) I have to say that Evolution is not only different; it is in many ways better. Critics complain of the teenage persona of many long-standing heroes but (and this comes directly after digging out my old comics and 1990's Animated Series collection) the show's writers clearly understand the characters in question.

The third season actually starts to look and feel closer to the "typical" stage of the X-Men universe in that the scope of their struggles is suddenly much larger than the high school principal or the Brotherhood. Battles with Sentinels result in the world's attention toward the mutant epidemic and most of it isn't favorable. Wolverine has been steadily evolving into the brute we all know and love while Scott (Cyclops) also shows more of his qualities as team leader. Iceman starts to get some screen time while some of the lesser known mutants (like Jubilee) end up getting removed here in the third season.

Overall, this is a very well packaged set complete with some interesting extras from the show's creators. In case you aren't already aware, the show went on to a 4th and final season. Hopefully we can expect the same type of treatment for that as well.

This season was great! My son loves X-men! I can't wait to see season 4 if there is one coming. Since these are children in high school graduating, it would be interesting to know how they turn up and if they decide to stick out the mansion with professor Xavior.

Finally! A full season's worth of episodes!.......2006-10-14

X-Men - Evolution, the Complete 3rd Season, continues the adventures of the teenage versions of the X-Men. Season 3's first episode, "Day of Recovery," picks up immediately where Season 2's "Day of Reckoning, Part 2" left off. After a frenetic battle with Magneto and the giant Sentinel robot and with mutanthood having been outed on the media, the X-Men must now deal with the aftermath of an Xavier's Institute in ruins and team members still being held captive in Area 51. Magneto is possibly dead and the X-Men have just discovered that Mystique had been posing as Professor X. Things have definitely taken a momentous turn as the X-kids now must deal with mutant bigotry by the public, and the hostility and prejudice of their "normal" high school peers. The Brotherhood of Mutants certainly don't aim to make things easy for their rivals. Events also lead to the return of the ancient, all-powerful mutant, Apokalypse. On a personal level, Scott and Jean become even more close, and Toad grows ever fonder of the scornful Scarlet Witch (ie: Wanda kicks him and Toad replies with "Oww, the delicious pain of l'amour"; well, that's love, baby). Spyke and Rogue also go thru their own personal wringers here, and Mystique is again a major player.

It only took me the first episode of Season One to get pretty comfortable with the revamped X-Men, although, as the seasons went on, it was still a bit unsettling to think of Colossus, Gambit, and the Scarlet Witch as semi-villains. While I wouldn't go as far as to call the idea of casting most of the X-Men as teens a stroke of genius, it's certainly a smart and hip, demographically savvy move on someone's part. Watching the straight arrow Cyclops, the self-assured Jean Grey, the insecure and sullen Rogue, and the blue fuzzy elf Nightcrawler go thru their high school angst makes for an enjoyable change of pace. Throw into the mix the adult instructors Prof. X, Wolverine, Beast, and Storm, and there's definitely a new synergy in the team dynamics. Plus, in this series, there's no love triangle amongst Scott, Jean, and Logan (which might be a good or bad thing, depending on who you're rooting for). With a cast as large as this one, it's only natural that short thrift be given to peripheral characters. Still, it's fun to catch glimpses of young Multiple Man, Magma, Sunspot, Cannonball, etc. Some of the best scenes in the season involved our mutant students using their powers to rebuild the demolished school. And I got a big kick out of "Mutant Ball," the X-Men's version of baseball. One of my favorite characters is the grotesque, despicable, yellow-toothed, but hilarious Toad, and several episodes are dedicated to him and his continuing crush on the disinterested Wanda.

It continues to puzzle me as to why the earlier seasons don't have a complete season dvd. But, at least, they, more or less, did right with this season. The Special Features on this 2-disc collection include "Cerebro's Mutant Files: The X-Men - Heroes" - a file on the X-Men instructors, the Angel, and the Morlocks; "Cerebro's Mutant Files: The Acolytes - Villains" - a file on Magneto and his acolytes (Sabertooth, Gambit, Colossus, Pyro, Mastermind); an "X-Men Season 3: X-Posed" segment; and a semi-amusing "Mystique's Trivia Challenge" (Mystique is definitely not a congenial game show host).

This series contains excellent animation. Instead of typical, boring fisticuffs heroics, the writers and animators creatively incorporate the best usage and combination of each mutant's powers to craft frenetic, highly diverting, and immensely watchable action/fight sequences. Plus, the writers have developed enough emotionally rich storylines that you get a well-balanced show in every episode. And, as always - when chronicling the X-Men - there's a prerequisite message on the values of tolerance thrown in, which is always worth heeding. Here go the episodes and the SPOILERS alert:

"DAY OF RECOVERY" (episode 1) - After the climactic showdown between the X-Men and Magneto in Season 2's finale, the world now knows about mutants; with Professor X missing, Mystique takes charge and uses the X-Men and the Brotherhood to infiltrate a military base to free fellow mutants; meanwhile, anti-mutant sentiment rages nationwide.

"THE STUFF OF HEROES" (episode 2) - The mutant manhunt continues; as Juggernaut wreaks havoc in the outskirts of Bayville, Storm and Beast journey to the Senate hearings to try to change the negative public opinion on mutants.

"MAINSTREAM" (episode 3) - The X-Men students are allowed to go back to public school on a trial run, providing they don't use their powers, but they end up getting the Veronica Mars treatment; meanwhile, Kurt (Nightcrawler), still trying to fit in with his image inducer, separates himself from his mutant buddies; Colossus guest stars.

"THE STUFF OF VILLAINS" (episode 4) - High school continues to suck for the X-Men students, and Spyke is close to losing it; the Scarlet Witch searches for her father Magneto; Gambit comes recruiting the Brotherhood for Magneto's team.

"BLIND ALLEY" (episode 5) - As Scott and Jean grow more attracted to each other, Mystique escapes from the military facility holding her captive and seeks revenge on Cyclops, luring him into a trap and stranding him in a desert without his ruby quartz glasses.

"X-TREME MEASURES" (episode 6) - Crazy Kitty is looking for driving lessons but no one wants to volunteer; a sports drink called "Pow-R 8" proves harmful to mutants; Spyke's finding it harder and harder to control his powers, as well as his temper - especially in dealing with high school; and where do the underground Morlocks fit in?

"THE TOAD, THE WITCH & THE WARDROBE" (episode 7) - Fun episode as Toad barges in on Kurt's dinner with Amanda and her parents, intent on stealing Kurt's image inducer; then, the two team up to rescue the Scarlet Witch from Magneto's clutches.

"SELF POSSESSED" (episode 8) - Rogue is suffering painful visions, which isn't alleviated by her jealousy over Jean dating Scott; then her powers run amok, as the personalities she'd absorbed take her over; the episode's ending provides a foreshadowing to Season 3's closing episodes.

"UNDER LOCK AND KEY" (episode 9) - Mesmero hypnotizes Gambit into stealing a relic from Warren Worthington's residence; this relic is one part of a device which will unleash the most powerful mutant the world has ever seen, Apokalypse; the X-Men battle Magneto's Acolytes for the relic; also, the kids play Mutant Ball.

"CRUISE CONTROL" (episode 10) - The kids go on a Bahaman cruise and end up sneaking off to an island when inclement weather forces their cruiseship to set anchor offshore; then an active volcano threatens the island.

"X23" (episode 11) - A deadly young girl, cloned in part with Wolverine's DNA and raised to be a Hydra operative, turns rogue and seeks out Wolverine - and not for a hug.

"DARK HORIZON PART 1" (episode 12) - As the Mesmero-controlled Rogue syphons powers off the X-Men, the Brotherhood, and Magneto and his Acolytes, graduation day arrives for the Bayville High School seniors and, of course, it doesn't go well; Logan, Sabertooth, and Gambit team up to track Rogue, while Xavier and Magneto's teams pursue Mesmero to Giza, Egypt.

"DARK HORIZON PART 2" (episode 13) - Most of the X-Men and the Acolytes are trapped underneath an Egyptian tomb and are separated and attacked by monolithic, animated Egyptian statues; meanwhile, Wolverine, Sabertooth, and Gambit track Rogue to Tibet; and, at last, Apokalypse - and another cliffhanger ending.

When I first saw this movie, I thought it was so clever and hilarious. It has many recognizable film noir moments in it. It's a classicly funny story and Steve Martin is great.

This is such a fun film as well as a work of art. I am old enough to remember the original films "cut" in and still able to totally enjoy this film. How Edith Head (her last movie) was able to replicate the clothing, accessories and total mood is truly Acadmy Award winning material and kudos to writing, directing and set design. Worthy of inclusion in any collectors library.

Steve Martin and Carl Reiner sat through hundreds of hours of classic films to find the footage they needed to splice in to "their" movie. The results were pure genius.

The editing and set designs were so flawless that it actually appears as though Steve Martin was starring in a film with the likes of Alan Ladd, Humphrey Bogart, Vincent Price, James Cagney, Veronica Lake, Joan Crawford, the list goes on and on.

The premise and plot are wacky, but it doesn't matter. This movie is so refreshing that you are able to overlook the rediculous plan of the major villain and the outlandishness of the situations that Martin constantly finds himself in (in one scene, he pours coffee grinds into a pot for two minutes and eight seconds!).

Martin geniously portrays a street-savvy, deadpan, hard-boiled private eye and still manages to make you laugh hysterically while maintaiing his straight-line, tough-guy persona . How he didn't crack himself up while filming these scenes is beyond me.

The film itself is very enjoyable, but it's also fun to try and pick out the scenes from the "classic" films and try to idenify who the actors are and what films the scenes were taken from.

If you don't want to buy the DVD, please, by all means, RENT it! This movie will please comedy fans, Steve Martin fans, and real movie buffs.

A simple plot with sublime execution.......2007-05-19

Steve Martin stars in this satire of 1940's film noir detective stories. The plot is simple, but the execution is sublime. Steve Martin's character is hired by a beautiful and mysterious woman who thinks that the death of her famous scientist father was no accident, despite what the police and newspapers are reporting. The movie is filmed in black & white and employs creative editing to splice in scenes of the great actors of the Golden Age: James Cagney, Veronica Lake, Burt Lancaster, Humphrey Bogart, Charles Laughton, Joan Crawford, Lana Turner, Barbara Stanwyck, Betty Davis and more.

The action teeters between melodramatic and pure slapstick, with sharp dialog. The photography is stunning, and I remember being amazed at the glow in the actors eyes', even with black & white film. Costuming was done by Edith Head, the winner of more Oscars than any other woman. Head was the perfect choice to match the modern actors costumes to those in the classic film footage.

Overlooked Martin.......2007-04-28

Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid (DMDWP) is probably Steve Martin's most overlooked film. Coming at the time when Steve was still "Wild & Crazy", many were turned off by this movie. But this is actually one of his best. The seemless interplay between Martin and the great actors/actresses from the 30's and 40's is genius. Filmed in black & white, Martin plays a gumshoe detective. Rachel Ward plays the love interest. Filmed before computers allowed you to insert anything into a scene, the editing must have been a nightmare. But the end result is worth it. The comedy is dark and satirical. It is Martin's tribute to the great detective and murder mystery films of Hollywood's golden years. Best way to view this film; Wait till it's nighttime, stormy and have a large popcorn. This film is simply great entertainment.

Are you a die-hard X-Men fan?.......2007-05-11

Do you refer to all of the X-Men (including Wolverine) by their full names instead of their code names? Do you reassure yourself that the discrepancies between various versions can be explained by invoking alternate timelines? Do you while away boring tasks by mentally assembling teams with synergistic combinations of mutant powers? Can you use the expression "oh my stars and garters" with a straight face?

If you answered "yes" to all of the above, you should buy X-Men: Evolution Season 1. If, instead, you rolled your eyes in disgust and assumed I was joking, you should probably pass on it.

The first season is exactly what one would expect of an X-Men take-off targeted at the Saturday morning cartoon crowd. Major characters are accounted for, but the intellectual elements are missing, or at least obscured by the saccharine "feel-good" tone of the show. Like all things X-Men related, the stories are character driven. However, relying heavily on tired high school clichés, they have all the emotional depth of a Hallmark greeting card.

The scenario has teenage versions of Jean, Scott, Kitty, Kurt, Evan, and Rogue (ok, even I don't know her real name) attending high school with several members of the Brotherhood. Clearly, this must be some alternate timeline because otherwise serious liberty has been taken with the biographies of some major characters.

Despite the dubious tutelage of principal Raven Darkholme (a.k.a. Mystique), the young mutants learn that its important to know who your true friends are, home is where the heart is, your family is all those who love you, and teamwork should come before rivalry. Professor Xavier and his fellow faculty members, Ororo and Logan, exchange kids-will-be-kids looks and all is well with the world.

The central theme of mutants as a metaphor for various oppressed groups does not come into play, as the story assumes mankind is unaware of the existence of mutant abilities. However, those lovable teenage misfits in the Brotherhood make enough trouble to keep the X-Kids busy and make the series enjoyable. If you shudder at the idea of supervillians so adorable you just want to tousle their hair and pinch their cheeks, let me reassure you that the cuteness does have a limit; the major antagonists are taken seriously and represented as adults. You won't see the master of magnetism wielding his powers to steal road signs, or a teenage Mystique banishing a pimple with her shape shifting ability.

In all fairness, the aspects of the first season which so disappoint the basement-dwelling thirty-somethings make it perfect for children. The episodes generally stand on their own, requiring little or no effort to follow. Morality is fairly black-and-white and happy endings are the norm. There is a final confrontation at the end, but little was done to lead up to it. Don't expect to be dazzled (or challenged) with creative plot twists.

For adult fans, the greatest strength of the X-Men: Evolution series is the writers' uncanny talent for putting the characters' powers to use in amazing combinations. For example, in the first season, you'll see Nightcrawler and Shadowcat making synergistic use of their abilities. I personally found this rather refreshing, as I have often postulated (during a boring commute) that Kurt and Kitty would make an astounding team. Evolution is one of the few incarnations of the X-Men where power-related plot holes are difficult to find. Unlike many science fiction creators, the Evolution writers clearly define the "rules" of their universe and play by them consistently. These subtle indications of genius foreshadow what is to come in later in the series.

Considered in isolation, the first season is mediocre and rates three stars. I was tempted to give it four simply because of the inherent sentimental value in seeing my favorite superheroes (and a few villains) as adorable animated adolescents. The main reason for the die-hard fan to purchase season one, however, is the expectation of what is to come. The humor, intrigue and drama of the later seasons build upon the characters and relationships established in the first episodes, so if you intend to watch the series it is best to get in at the beginning.

And no fan should go without seeing the rest of the series. In the second season, X-Men: Evolution, like its protagonists, undergoes a rapid and dramatic transition from an immature, simplistic form to a thing of awesome and unlimited potential. The contrast is enough to elicit and exclamation of "oh my stars and garters".

Great Price for a Great Show.......2006-07-21

I was thrilled to find this set here on Amazon, and buying this set is so much cheaper then buying each volume seperatly. All of the DVD's have some good interviews with the producers, designers, voice actors, and other people associated with the show. I don't usually like watching interviews/things where people talk a lot, but I love watching those interviews over and over and seeing the steps they took to make this show as good as it was. I totall reccomend it to anyone looking for something a little different.

Not the best - but fun for X-fans.......2006-07-07

Season One of X-Men Evolution is undoubtedly the weakest season of the show. The voice actors have not settled in to their roles (most notably Professor X and Wolverine), the show introduces a lot more the high school aspect of X-Men, and its constant changes to X-Lore take a lot of getting used to.

But Evolution will eventually win you over. It's fun to see the high school setting, the different interpretations of the characters and the show itself is good fun. X-fans may have to grin and bear at some of the more "unwise" decisions (most painfully the season finale with Magneto), but I think overall that this is worth any X-fans hard earned cash.
