In the ongoing deluge of comic-book adaptations, Hellboy ranks well above average. Having turned down an offer to helm Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban in favor of bringing Hellboy's origin story to the big screen, the gifted Mexican director Guillermo del Toro compensates for the excesses of Blade II with a moodily effective, consistently entertaining action-packed fantasy, beginning in 1944 when the mad monk Rasputin--in cahoots with occult-buff Hitler and his Nazi thugs--opens a transdimensional portal through which a baby demon emerges, capable of destroying the world with his powers. Instead, the aptly named Hellboy is raised by the benevolent Prof. Bloom, founder of the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense, whose allied forces enlist the adult Hellboy (Ron Perlman, perfectly cast) to battle evil at every turn. While nursing a melancholy love for the comely firestarter Liz (Selma Blair), Hellboy files his demonic horns ("to fit in," says Bloom) and wreaks havoc on the bad guys. The action is occasionally routine (the movie suffers when compared to the similar X-Men blockbusters), but del Toro and Perlman have honored Mike Mignola's original Dark Horse comics with a lavish and loyal interpretation, retaining the amusing and sympathetic quirks of character that made the comic-book Hellboy a pop-culture original. He's red as a lobster, puffs stogies like Groucho Marx, and fights the good fight with a kind but troubled heart. What's not to like? --Jeff Shannon
Product Description
From visionary writer/director Guillermo del Toro (director of Blade II, The Devil's Backbone) comes Hellboy, a supernatural action adventure based on Mike Mignola's popular Dark Horse Comics series of the same name. Born in the flames of hell and brought to Earth as an infant to perpetrate evil, Hellboy (Ron Perlman) was rescued from sinister forces by the benevolent Dr. Broom (John Hurt), who raised him to be a hero. In Dr. Broom's secret Bureau of Paranormal Research and Defense, Hellboy creates an unlikely family consisting of the telepathic "Mer-Man" Abe Sapien (Doug Jones) and Liz Sherman (Selma Blair), the woman he loves who can control fire. Hidden from the very society that theyprotect, they stand as the key line of defense against an evil madman who seeks to reclaim Hellboy to the dark side and use his powers to destroy mankind.

Hellboy Blu-ray.......2007-09-11
Apparently not all machines are capable of playing Blu-ray. None of mine were able to play this disk. Had to reorder.
Great PQ.......2007-08-23
Hellboy's PQ was excellent and the added scenes add to the flow of the movie. Great BD buy.
Beautiful picture quality.......2007-08-02
I like this movie although I would not say I love it based on the story. I picked it up thinking the picture would be awesome on blue ray. I was not wrong. As another review stated, the blue flames were brilliant. I really noticed the detail on Hellboys face. Sound was great. I noticed alot of sound I did not hear before. It is (or was when I bought it) one of the cheaper films on BRay and it was well worth it.
Blu-ray benchmark.......2007-07-12
First off the movie is great especially this directors cut. Secondly, the picture quality and sound quality rivals that of the pirates movies on blu-ray so I would say this is a must purchase for those who like the movie and want to show it off
Beautiful Blue Flames!.......2007-07-02
I'm not a big Del Torro fan (Blade II, Pan's Labyrinth), and this movie leaves a little to be desired at times. However, I bought this movie on Blu-ray because I knew it would be a feast for the eyes. I still can't get over how beautiful Selma Blair's character looked consumed in blue flame. Absolutely gorgeous. Hellboy's red skin was awesome. Don't get me wrong. It's not all about the looks. This movie has some great action and cool monsters. It's fun to watch, but it's more fun to watch in 1080p!

In some ways, Blood and Iron captures more of graphic novelist Mike Mignola's original vision than Guillermo del Toro's lackluster feature did in 2004. Hellboy, the demon brought into this world by the Nazis, but raised by "Professor Broom" to fight for good, was conceived as a drawing, not an actor buried under make-up and latex. The story, which incorporates elements from Mignola's "Wake the Devil" collection, sends Hellboy, Abe Sapien, Liz Sherman, and Prof. Broom to the haunted mansion of a vulgar millionaire. Hoping to cash in on the supernatural angle, he's filled the house with relics of "Blood Countess" Erzsebet Ondrusko (based on the 16th century Hungarian noblewoman Elizebeth Bathory), whom Prof. Broom defeated in 1939. It's really haunted, and the gang tackles harpies, ghosts, witches, werewolves, vampires, and the goddess Hecate. The key actors from the live action film repeat their roles as voices: Ron Perlman (Hellboy), Selma Blair (Liz), Doug Jones (Abe), and John Hurt (Broom). Perlman makes a suitably underplayed Hellboy, growling his annoyance at everything from a bad donut to a vicious blow from the iron-clad goddess. The limits of the animation would be less problematic if the direction were more dynamic. Tad Stones and Victor Cook don't get the needed power out of the action sequences, especially the prolonged battle between Hellboy and Hecate. It would be interesting to see what a talented director like Kazuhiro Furuhashi (Ruruoni Kenshin) or Hiroyuki Okiura (Jin-Roh) would do with this material. Blood and Iron will appeal to some "Hellboy" fans, but it lacks the dark panache of the original books. (Unrated, suitable for ages 14 and older: violence, grotesque imagery, potentially offensive religious imagery) --Charles Solomon

Ok.......2007-07-25
I love Hellboy! I enjoy the comics and the major motion picture. The animated adventures are just ok to me. Not as fun as the movie, but they will do until the sequel comes out.
A CUT BELOW LIVE-ACTION HELLBOY.......2007-07-17
I'm a big fan of the movie Hellboy, which is the only reason that I watched the animated Blood And Iron. However, I'm not a fan of cartoons. So, naturally I wasn't blown away by this. Sure, it had some good humor, and the animation was topnotch. It's just that it had a kiddie feel to it that kept me from really getting into it.
Hell Boy: Blood and Iron.......2007-07-07
A Good flick; this toon is very true to the Hell Boy Comics and features voice acting by the cast from the Motion Picture. The animation isn't on the greatest budget and doesn't impress, but witty writing and good character design make up for this a good deal. I found "Storm of Swords" slightly more enjoyable, but if you're a fan- you won't regret this purchase.
If you liked the Movie, This, you will Love!.......2007-07-07
This is Great! I was really surprised by these animated films with all the actors from the film! its really good with excellent voice talent of abe sapian, and of course hellboy *ron perlman* and the animations are excellent and clean as a razor. sound quality is also excellent (played this with my dolby surround running and wow!) I Really enjoyed this one more then Sword of Storms, because of the gothic aspects *they are fighting a Vampire* and of course hellboy's patented "oh crap" line that seems to always be dropped in at the perfect moment! I cracked up several times watching this. If you are a fan of all things Hellboy the do your self a favor and go buy this. afterward rent sword of storms to make sure you want that one.
Animation: animatrix/Dark Fury style artwork always a plus with me 5 star
Graphical quality: again 5 star not a glitch in it.
Sound: Scary good!!!! 5 STAR!!!
extras: some and really not that interesting. 3 star
aside from dull extras this film is worth every cent and its over an hour long vs dark fury *chronicles of riddick* is only 35 minutes! its a very good deal I was really surprised!

Hellboy - Blood and Iron (Animated)
Old Enemies Menace Hellboy's Surrogate Father.......2007-07-01
HELLBOY: BLOOD AND IRON is the second Hellboy animated movie released direct-to-DVD. The first was HELLBOY: SWORD OF STORMS. As in the first feature, Ron Perlman provides the voice for Hellboy. Other stars from the feature film lend their voices as well, including Selma Blair, Doug Jones, Peri Gilpin, and John Hurt. The story is taken from the second story arc of the Hellboy comics. It was originally called, "Wake the Devil".
This movie shows more of Hellboy's upbringing than the feature movie starring Ron Perlman. It also reveals a lot more of Professor (Bruttenholm) Broom's background before he found Hellboy back in the 1940s after the Nazi Germans brought him into this world. As it turns out, Professor Broom was quite the paranormal investigator long before Hellboy arrived.
During those days, the professor's arch-nemesis was Erzsebet Ondrusko, a vampire and worshiper of Hecate, the queen of witches. The opening sequence showing Broom's encounter with the villainess is appropriately chilling and a visual treat. In fact, the whole movie owes more to creator Mike Mignola's artwork than the feature-length movie. The scenes in the animated movie could have been ripped directly from Mignola's comics pages.
Hellboy is introduced while lurking through a sewer system and looking for a monster. He, admittedly, is up to his neck in crap. The humor mixes very well with the action and emotion in the film. This isn't Leo Tolstoy, but it's nice to have characters you feel like you know and can care about. Especially when they're dealing with old business that carries a lot of emotional baggage for them.
Hellboy puts down the creature with help from Abe Sapien and they quickly return to the hidden headquarters of the BPRD (Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense). They sit around talking and the viewer gets to know more about the characters. One of the things I enjoy about the movies is that you don't have to know much to understand who the characters are. You're given what you need to know as you go along, and it's never dull even for the true fans that already know everything.
When assignments are given out, Professor Broom usurps control of the meeting and assigns Hellboy, Abe Sapien, and Liz Sherman to investigate sightings of ghosts in a mansion that's been remodeled into a top-of-the-line museum/lodge. The job was initially a low-priority for them. The professor offers no explanation and the rest of the team is left wondering what's going on. More than that, the professor is going along and that hasn't happened in years. All of them are concerned for his health.
Of course, when they arrive at the mansion, things are decidedly much worse than they were led to believe. There's not just one ghost; there appear to be dozens. And even more evil is afoot.
Interspersed for the current ongoing story line, there are flashbacks to Professor Broom's earlier encounters with Erzsebet Ondrusko. The story concerning Hellboy and the others definitely takes second-place to the overall storytelling until the very last of the movie. It's all the clues and backstory of what has gone on before that really captures the interest.
The fight scene at the end of the movie is multi-layered as Hellboy and the others are divided. It's all interesting to watch, but it tends to drag on the little, especially when you realize that time after time it is not over.
Due to the violence and the scary appearances of many of the monsters, this animated feature is and recommended for young kids. However, if you like cartoons and your kids do too, this is definitely one you can sit down and enjoy together. There's enough story and enough action to keep everyone happy. At 75 minutes, you can easily fit the movie into an evening.

I love this movie soo much! If you like action movies you will not be disappointed! The best movie ever!!!
Ron Perlman OWNZ.......2007-06-01
I was surprised how decent this move is. There are a lot of obvious similaities with League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. The strong point is that Ron Perlman's Hellboy has a ton of personality, that you only see tantalizing flickers of during the rather brisk storyline. Hellboy is your usual smartmouth, rugged toughguy. It's impossible not to think he's cool.
Rasputin is in league with Satan or something, and want's to unleash hell on Earth. He has a stereotypical Nazi chick with a bad accent with him, and a Cyber-Nazi who also can't die. They are all pretty lame villains, although Rasputin looks cool. Selma Blair is enchanting as Liz, the flame girl. For such an underdog Superhero movie, the costume effects are impressive. Abe Sapien is a crazy-looking undersea mer-man or something. Not to sound old (I'm 22), but it's amazing what they can do with face prosthetics. You never doubt for a second that's Hellboy's REAL FACE. This movie is worth at least a look.
Want more Hellboy?.......2007-03-31
So, you've seen the HELLBOY live action movie, and/or the animated material, loved it, and are thirsting for more tales of the red skinned chief investigator of the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense? Lucky for you there are several items currently available that should (at least temporarily) quench your thirst.
If you'd like to relive the movie, try the HELLBOY novelization, by Yvonne Navarro. Navarro is an old hand at adapting screen properties, both large and small (she's done several BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER books, plus novelizations of SPECIES I and II) and can be counted on to do so in a readable and entertaining manner. Her work on HELLBOY is no exception. Writing from director Guillermo del Toro's script, and adding in her own little extras based on her intimate knowledge of the source material (she even gets HELLBOY's alternative spelling of "pancakes," substituting "m" for "n", correct), she produces a faithful adaptation of the movie. If you like her HELLBOY book, you might also sample some of Navarro's original novels. Books like AFTERAGE and MIRROR ME (available from The Overlook Connection Press), THAT'S NOT MY NAME, FINAL IMPACT, and RED SHADOWS are all well worth your time and money.
If you wish to explore the comics that inspired the film, there are several reasonably priced HELLBOY collections available from Dark Horse Comics. The movie's main inspiration comes from HELLBOY: SEED OF DESTRUCTION, written and drawn by HELLBOY 's creator, Mike Mignola, with an able assist from the venerable John Byrne of Superman and X-Men fame. HELLBOY: CONQUEROR WORM explores ideas Mignola touched on in SEED OF DESTRUCTION, finally explaining the origins of the strange race of aliens who appeared in that story.
If you like those, you can sample HELLBOY: WAKE THE DEVIL, HELLBOY: THE CHAINED COFFIN, and HELLBOY: THE RIGHT HAND OF DOOM. WAKE THE DEVIL is one long story, the other two volumes present several stand alone short stories which explore world mythology and folklore (THE CHAINED COFFIN features "The Corpse", an amusing tale whose events feature prominently in the movie). To see how other folks handle HELLBOY and his eclectic supporting cast, try BPRD: HOLLOW EARTH AND OTHER STORIES, and HELLBOY: WEIRD TALES.
If plain old prose is what floats your boat, there are several worthy original HELLBOY novels, among them HELLBOY: ON EARTH AS IT IS IN HELL by Brian Hodge, HELLBOY: THE GOD MACHINE by Thomas Sniegoski, HELLBOY: UNNATURAL SELECTION by Tim Lebbon, and three by Christopher Golden (of OF SAINTS AND SHADOWS fame), namely HELLBOY: THE LOST ARMY, HELLBOY: THE BONES OF GIANTS, and HELLBOY: THE DRAGON POOL. Golden also ably edited HELLBOY: ODD JOBS, an anthology featuring short stories by the likes of the aforementioned Brian Hodge, Poppy Z. Brite, Nancy Collins, Greg Rucka, and Chet Williamson.
Excellent film.......2007-03-17
Great casting. Good plot. Oustanding special effects and character makeup for Hellboy (Ron Pearlman). A must for action film lovers. Buy it!
Great super hero movie.......2007-01-30
I really liked this movie. I thought it was a great super hero movie that had some humor built into it. It was well told and the characters were well developed. The special effects were great too!! I am not one for comic book heros, but this one confinced me otherwise. I recommend this movie to anyone that wants to see a good over evil story that was orginally a comic book character.

In this first animated feature from Director Tad Stones (Buzz Lightyear of Star Command), and Creative Producers Mike Mignola (creator of HELLBOY comics) and Guillermo del Toro (writer/director of the HELLBOY movie), a folklore professor becomes unwittingly possessed by the ancient Japanese demons of Thunder and Lightning. But when The Bureau of Paranormal Research & Defense dispatches a team of agents to investigate, a cursed samurai sword sends Hellboy (Ron Perlman) to a supernatural dimension of ghosts, monsters and feudal mayhem. Now while pyrokinetic Liz Sherman (Selma Blair) and fishboy Abe Sapien (Doug Jones) battle one very pissed-off dragon, a lost and cranky Hellboy must find his way home. Even if he can survive the perilous journey, how much crap does a guy have to put up with from the two most vengeful and ferocious spirits of Japanese legend?

Horror, action and folk tales.......2007-08-05
This animated movie is actually one of the most interesting productions of the kind. It combines horror and action keeping the audience thrilled through the entire film. The animation is remarkable, its simplicity and subtleness is outstanding. The story is good but its resolution is somewhat weak. Nevertheless, I recommend it if you are a fan of action, horror and if you would like to watch a fresh view of Japanese folk tales.
Hellboy rules.......2007-06-08
this is the first animated hellboy movie made and it's awesome. This movie is great. at first i thought it would suck but i was wrong. and i'm glad that they had the actors from the Live action movie in it. this is a must see for all hellboy, superheroe, comic book fans.
It's great !.......2007-05-12
Super de retrouver le démon sympa en animation.
Histoire bien menée, animation correcte, ambiance générale respectée, humour au rendez vous. Une réussite.
Hellboy: Sword of Storms (Animated).......2007-05-08
Good Movie. Great to add to your collection of Hellboy. I can't wait for the next animated mvoie to come out.
A great take on the Hellboy world........2007-04-03
I'm a huge Mignola fan and I'm usually very critical of anything Hellboy that's not directly from it's creator, but I found this movie to be quite good. It's not animated in Mignola's distinct style (see the animated Screw-on Head) but the artwork does manage enough of a satisfactory flow to tell the story well. The tale itself is pretty original (with a little Mignola-created material thrown in) and well-done so as to keep the viewer interested throughout the movie's length. Best of all, it is not totally "dumbed down" for children the way many animated takes on comic icons are, and does in fact use several curse words, though the violence is creatively muted. I would recommend this for a fan of the Hellboy comics or movie, as it bridges those mediums well.

It's a blast.......2007-08-16
I just saw the basic version that comes from Netflix, but I understand the versions are basically the same except for some added material on the 2-disk. This is where the review action seems to be, anyway.
It's a blast! Great effects - well, I know that's expected nowadays, but even so - and I like that del Toro keeps CGI in its place, preferring "live" action when it's possible. (That was a strength of his "Pan's Labyrinth", too).
I'm not much of a comic book guy, but I recognise the sharp and sassy tone of the dialog. You have to chuckle when some absolutely appalling thing happens, Hellboy's plans going horribly awry, perhaps the end of him or indeed the world, and his comment is "Oh, crap." In fact, as the monster with so many human failings and feelings, he reminds me of Grendel as interpreted by John Gardner in his marvellous book. The difference is that Grendel can't help attacking/eating humans, while Hellboy wants to save them.
So overall, just enjoy for an undemanding and never-boring experience. Appreciate the skill with which del Toro "places" you in just the right relation to the story, the mood, and the characters, so that while you never take it seriously, you never think "oh, just too silly" as one may do with inferior fantasy.
Give Evil Hell..........2007-07-06
In the world of comic books there are many well known heroes that populate the various universes of each publishing company's books. From DC Comics' popular characters of Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman to Marvel's Spiderman, X-Men, and Fantastic Four; each of those characters are beloved by comic book fans worldwide. Aside from those characters and their respective companies there are numerous other characters that have built a cult following in the comic world, but are not as well known by the mainstream public. One such character would be the Dark Horse comic book Hellboy, created by writer/artist Mike Mignola.
In theaters many of Marvel and DC's heroes have been finding their way to the big screen with varying degrees of success, most are wildly successful, but a few have faltered along the way, but not too many of the other companies have managed to bring their properties to life with as much success. Sure, there was "Spawn" (property of Image Comics) and "Judge Dredd" (British publication called '2000 A.D.') in the mid-nineties, but they weren't all that successful, so the likelihood of these little known characters finding success with movie audiences was slim to none. At least that was the case until director Guillermo del Toro ("Blade 2") passed on an opportunity to direct the 3rd installment in the 'Harry Potter' franchise, "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban", to bring one of his favorite comic characters to life.
With a successful director, such as Guillermo behind the lens, New Line Cinema must have felt fairly confident in the film's success after he had done wonders for them with the second installment in the 'Blade' trilogy, so with a director on board who respected the source material, and a talented cast of actors consisting of Ron Perlman, Selma Blair, and John Hurt, this little known comic book was about to become a living, breathing reality on the silver screen.
"Hellboy" begins in 1944 during World War 2, when Rasputin, a mad sorcerer in league with Hitler, opens a dimensional portal to Hell, and through this dimension a baby demon emerges. Before Rasputin can take the baby demon and raise him to be an instrument of death and destruction, the Allied forces stop him. Among the Allies, is a young man who raises this demon, appropriately named Hellboy, teaching him the ways of the hero. As an adult, Hellboy (Ron Perlman) works with an agency known as the Bureau of Paranormal Research and Defense, founded by the very man that raised him Professor Bloom (John Hurt), their job is to track any paranormal activity on Earth, and protect humanity from any danger that may be the result of that activity. Now, 60 years after releasing Hellboy on Earth, Rasputin has returned with the intention of using Hellboy to unleash the 7 gods of chaos upon Earth. With Earth's survival hanging in the balance, Hellboy and company, consisting of the firestarter Liz (Selma Blair), a human/amphibian hybrid named Abe Sapien (acted out by Doug Jones, but voiced by David Hyde Pierce), and FBI agent Myers, are in for the most difficult fight of their lives.
After finding moderate success in Hollywood with the science-fiction/horror movie "Mimic", and following that up with his much more successful comic book hit "Blade 2", director Guillermo del Toro probably seemed without a doubt the best choice to bring Hellboy to the big screen. Not only is Guillermo a gifted director in the arena of special effects and horror, but he also has a knack for making his characters have a sense of humor which serves to lighten the mood in his otherwise darker toned movies, those elements combined together with his affection for the source material created the optimal conditions for another comic book movie franchise to be born, proving him the right man for the job.
After Guillermo signed on, it was time to build the cast for the project. Now, I'm sure casting for this movie was probably typical by most comic book movie standards, but the difficult part had to have been finding the right man to don the red paint and prosthetics that are used to create Hellboy's demonic visage. Enter actor Ron Perlman ("Alien: Resurrection"), an actor that has made a career of playing somewhat strange, even scary characters, and who by the way is no stranger to wearing plenty of prosthetics. After all, Ron Perlman's best known role was that of the Beast in the live-action TV series "Beauty and the Beast" opposite actress Linda Hamilton ("The Terminator"), so with his experience with prosthetics and his penchant for strange characters, it was almost as if he was destined to be this character. The supporting cast members do very well with providing depth and reality to these strange new heroes that join together to face monsters determined to destroy us. There really wasn't a weak actor/actress in the entire bunch, a true rariety in the various genres that this movie fits into, i.e. horror, science-fiction, comic book. It was a welcome addition that everyone involved on screen and off appeared to have a deep respect for the source material and the fan base, and not just being there to collect a paycheck.
The special effects for the movie were very well done, especially the scenes with Liz's fire power being showcased. These scenes are where the CGI really shines. As I touched on earlier, the prosthetics and costume department also deserves great praise for their oustanding work done here, from Hellboy to the monsters that he faces, to Abe Sapien or Kronen, every aspect of costumes, prosthetics, and practical effects is top-notch all the way. And finally, the story for "Hellboy" was very fast paced and entertaining, without skimming on the details of the character, which I appreciated greatly due to my lack of awareness in regards to this comic book. Without this entertaining and engaging story that was smartly written to play well with audiences that would be hard-core fans of the comic and those that have either little or no knowledge of the character whatsoever.
With all of that being said, "Hellboy" is a terrific comic book based movie, that as far as I know, stays true to the source material without making newcomers to the character feel lost in the shuffle. Definitely a solid entry into the pantheon of comic book movies and a welcome addition at that.
"Hellboy" is rated PG-13 for violence and language.

First off let me say,I've never read a comic book in my life.I never found you had to read the comics to understand or love the films. And Hellboy was no expection.I never even heard of the comic book created by Mike Mignola (I'm sure some people hadn't heard of it too).
Ron Perlman was born to play Hellboy,he was so perfectly cast has the half-human,half-demon..You just can't see anyone else play this character.John Hurt was good as Professor Broom, the man who raised Hellboy and I didn't reconize him at all,I knew lthe voice but couldn't place the face.Selma Blair who's an actress who sometimes really annoys me,but this time she didn't.
Directed by Guillermo del Toro, whom turned down the chance to direct Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban to do this, did a great job and not really changing the story like most directors do with Comic Book films. If someone else directed Hellboy it wouldn't have been as great as it was
Better than the original - Del Toro is magnificent.......2007-05-12
I love this movie and normally I am not crazy about the comic book genre. The characters are so rich and the story is fantastic. The extras in this edition are well worth it.
Raving for Hellboy.......2007-03-27
I actually own the Special Edition DVD version of this movie, but I love this one all the same. You can't help but feeling sorry for Hellboy, the title character of the movie.Smitten with Elizabeth Sherman(who he calls "Liz" since they grew up together from childhood), he struggles to proclaim his love to her while watching her smile sometimes at Hellboy's new liaison,John Myers, who tries to make friends with her. This movie is an amazing action/adventure film, but with a classic twist.Included as a prelude to the movie at the beggining,a short historical part is included that explaines how Hellboy was discovered by Professor Trevor Broom & the World War II type picture they take to document the occasion. In all, this is a great movie for those who love a good action/adventure movie, but with a little real content within.
