It's called Last Man Standing, an apt-enough description when you consider that so many of his peers, like Sun Records mentor Sam Phillips and "Million Dollar Quartet" partners Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, and Carl Perkins, are six feet under. But Jerry Lee Lewis doesn't spend a lot of time on his feet during any portion of this two-hour show, the visual complement to his 2006 CD Last Man Standing: The Duets. Truth is, at 71, the Ferriday (Louisiana) Fireball is fairly rickety; sitting almost immobile at the keyboard, he's a far cry from the rock & roll firebrand who'd leap to his feet, kick away his piano stool, and wail, his golden locks flying. So this meeting between Lewis and about a dozen singing partners, ranging from fellow veterans (Willie Nelson, Kris Kristofferson, Merle Haggard) to relative youngsters (Chris Isaak, Norah Jones, Kid Rock), would have been more exciting had it happened, say, 10 years ago. It's still pretty cool. Lewis' piano chops are strong; his singing, while obviously weaker than in his heyday, ain't half bad either; he's got a great band, including guitarists Nils Lofgren and Rolling Stone Ron Wood and drummer Jim Keltner; and both he and his guests (not to mention the studio audience) are having a hellacious good time. Of course, he's still playing "Great Balls of Fire" and "Whole Lotta Shakin' Going On," the two rock & roll classics that bookend this 28-song set. But most of the repertoire emphasizes Lewis' country roots: there are Hank Williams chestnuts ("Your Cheatin' Heart" with Jones, "Jambalaya" with Nelson, "You Win Again" with Don Henley), genre classics ("Will the Circle Be Unbroken," with Kristofferson and John Fogerty), country blues ("Hadacol Boogie," with Buddy Guy), country-flavored rock ("Little Queenie" and "Honky Tonk Women" with Rock)... even a country fried version of "Somewhere Over the Rainbow," with Isaak. It's all a bit tame, but Last Man Standing (which includes some vintage Lewis performance clips, interviews, and a few brief bonus features) is nonetheless a worthy celebration of a national treasure. --Sam Graham

3 out of 5 stars A depressing tribute to a great performer past his prime.......2007-08-25

Jerry Lee Lewis has always been an awesome piano player whose live performances have been legendary for his energetic and lightning fast playing. He has always been loud, fast, and wild, in the past.

I watched this DVD today, I noticed something that few did or even dare to mention. No disrespect intended to Mr. Lewis or any of his other fans, but he is old and has slowed down tremendously. It's just not the same watching him. The energy is gone. The fire has gone out, so to speak.

Yes, he still plays well. His voice sounds great. He just does not have that sparkle that he once had. For that reason, I can not bring myself to watch this again. I will gladly bring out an older concert of his, instead.

5 out of 5 stars JLL.......2007-07-21

Not being a JLL fan this DVD caught my attention for the quality of the video and sound.I really didn't know how talented the guy was until I heard all of the songs he did. Once I started watching it I couldn't stop.
As old as he is he can still hit those piano keys even with arthritic fingers, and if there were mistakes I missed them. I reccommend this DVD as one of the finest experiences and rank it right up there with "Crossroads" and the "Eagles" DVDs.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome.......2007-07-05

Great sound and great music. For an old guy, he sure rocks. Even flames on his piano!

4 out of 5 stars All Killer.......2007-06-17

I had the pleasure of seeing Jerry Lee Lewis live this year at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival. Looking aged and not moving too well he was escorted to his piano. Then something great happened: as soon as he started to play the years melted away and he was the famed Killer once again.

Last Man Standing tries to show this side of Jerry Lee through a sort of tribute concert/studio recording session for his most recent Duets album.

The concert portion filmed in LA on September 29, 2006 has Mr.Lewis rocking with a group of admirers who all seemed awed to be in his presence. There are legendary performances from Tom Jones, Soloman Burke, Norah Jones and others. The band cooks but is a little guitar heavy at times with Ronnie Wood taking his Stone on Loan persona on the road.

The studio portion of the disc features performances by John Fogerty, Kris Kristofferson, and Merle Haggard.

This is a disc to see if you are a fan of legendary rock and roll.

Best known for making movies about men and violence, director Walter Hill scored a misfire with this ambitious but ultimately dreary remake of Akira Kurosawa's samurai classic Yojimbo. The story's essentially the same but the setting has been switched to a dusty, almost ghostly Texas town in the 1930s, where two rival Chicago gangs are locked in an uneasy truce. Bruce Willis plays the lone drifter who allies himself with both gangs to his own advantage, working both sides against each other according to his own hidden agenda. The violence escalates to a bloody climax, of course, with Christopher Walken, David Patrick Kelly, and Michael Imperioli as trigger-happy lieutenants in a lonely, desolate war. Fans of gangster movies will want to see this, and, if nothing else, Hill has brought his polished style to a vaguely mythic story. It's far from being a classic, however, and although its action is at times masterfully choreographed, the movie's humorless attitude is unexpectedly oppressive. --Jeff Shannon

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Remake of a remake.......2007-08-09

First done by Akira Kurosawa (Yojimbo), then Sergio Leone (starring Clint Eastwood - A Fistfull of Dollars) it stands the test of time and the remake with Bruce Willis set in the Depression/Gangster Era. Same story but still a crowd pleaser with plenty of action and gun play.

4 out of 5 stars A Fistfull of Dollars for the Chicago Mob..........2007-08-08

1996's "Last Man Standing" is a remake of the Clint Eastwood classic "A Fistfull of Dollars", itself derivative of an earlier Japanese samurai classic. In this version, Bruce Willis is the mysterious drifter who wanders into a dusty 1930's town in the American Southwest, where two rival gangs from Chicago, one Irish, one Italian, duel over prohibition liquor smuggling from Mexico. As in earlier films, the stranger who calls himself "John Smith" sells his very lethal services to the highest bidder, while the rivalry between the gangs literally becomes a war to the death.

Director Walter Hill is only partially successful in laying down an atmospheric thriller over several gunfight sequences. The respective Irish and Italian gangs seem more like stereotypes than the real thing. Fortunately, the gunfights are nicely staged and excellently choreographed.

Willis is entirely credible as a gunman on the run and down on his luck, injecting his everyman vulnerability into a role more easily played as a heartless killer. A sequence in which "Smith" clears a house of armed gang members, shooting and reloading twin .45 caliber automatic pistols with almost balletic grace, is a highpoint of the movie.

Christopher Walken, pitch-perfect as a psychotic killer for the Irish mob, is "Smith's" most dangerous opponent. The movie implies the two men have a history from Chicago, and their final confrontation will determine the "last man standing." Bruce Dern has a nice supporting role as a corrupt sheriff who waits out the violence to take back an almost deserted town.

This movie is highly recommended as a serviceable action movie. It is too much a copy to become a classic in its own right, but it is certainly entertaining.

3 out of 5 stars Last Man Standing.......2007-07-27

Walter Hill's nod to the gangster and western genres. Bruce Willis rocks, but if you're not into semi cheesy action, steer clear. However, there is Christopher Walken, and who can resist!

4 out of 5 stars Bruce at his best.......2007-07-13

I really enjoyed this movie and don't know how I missed it the first time around. The plot is typical, but the cast always live up to their potential. Fun. I'll watch it again about every six months.

5 out of 5 stars Red Harvest retold through Gun Poetry.......2007-06-29

As far as I know, this makes the second movie produced that's based on Dashiell Hammett's 'Red Harvest' (same guy who wrote The Thin Man and The Maltese Falcon). The first was Kurosawa's 'Yojimbo', which is undoubtedly a classic of Japanese cinema, itself spawning a revolution in American movie making when Sergio Leone began making all of Kurosawa's Samurai flicks into what we now know as Spaghetti Westerns.

If you've seen Yojimbo, or its western rendition `A Fistful of Dollars', and enjoyed either one, then you should get quite a kick out of this Bruce Willis Powered send up to Hammett's first foray into grunge fiction. We already know the story (lonely town, gangs, double crossing, woman, money, gunfights, no good guy just bad guys and indifferent guys), so the delivery is what's going to make the movie.

So how's the delivery? Absolutely Gun-alicious!

The whole movie is quite visceral; the gun fights are reminiscent of John Woo (slightly unrealistic, but convincing) and the dialogue is retailored to match the characters delivery, whether it be quiet and whispered, loud and obnoxious, or just mumbles. Bruce Willis was the perfect choice for the lead, menacing and believable as always. My favorite casting choice was Christopher Walken, the great character actor of our generation. The humor and insanity he brought to `Last Man Standing' is what really tied the whole movie together, and earned it 5 solid stars.

The Bottom Line: Know the history of this movie, and you'll enjoy it all the more.

Michael Jai White replaces Ving Rhames in Undisputed II: Last Man Standing, a sequel to the 2002 Undisputed, in which a heavyweight champion boxer is sent to prison as a ruse to get him to fight a champion pugilist on the slammer circuit. White is serviceable as "Iceman" Chambers, this time arrested in Russia (framed for drug possession) and sent to hard time in a horrible prison. There Iceman resists efforts to convince him to fight a champion kickboxer (Scott Adkins), but the system is determined to break him or get him to cooperate with the plan. This brutal adventure is pretty much by-the-numbers as follow-up features go, but it is generally exciting, and martial arts buffs will certainly enjoy the taut action sequences. --Tom Keogh

Description

Sequel to the 2002 film. This time, Heavyweight Champ George "Iceman" Chambers (White) is sent to a Russian jail on trumped-up drug charges. In order to win his freedom he must fight against the jailhouse fighting champ Uri Boyka (Adkins) in a battle to the death. This time he is not fighting for a title, he is fighting for his life!

I really love the action in this movie. Some of the language however, is a little over the top. The purchasing experience was wonderful. Fast shipment and the condition was just as advertised.

5 out of 5 stars superb.......2007-05-22

just like every other reviewer here, i was surprised by how good this movie was. i was in awe while watching how quick these fighters moved and i was extremely glad that someone recommended this to me because i wouldn't have even thought twice about it.

not much to say about the plot other then it has been done to death by other movies. don't let that discourage you, it's still well worth a watch. the only thing that i wished was different was that it wasn't a sequel to the first undisputed. the character differences of Iceman were unbelievably noticeable and that is why i would like to make it clear that i rated this movie as a movie all on it's own, not as a sequel. there were no references to the first one and if it weren't for the name of the champ as well as the movie title, you wouldn't even know they were one in the same.

4 out of 5 stars U II.......2007-03-21

I enjoyed this movie. I only bought it because of White, but it was not the greatest but pretty OK for entertainment.

A lot of action. All fights, axcept the final, were intence.

A pretty good movie, it was definetly better than I expected it to be, good enough for me to submit a review about it.

5 out of 5 stars one of the best b-action movies i have ever seen.......2007-08-21

Compared to most of the Hollywood movies out there, this film probably wouldn't compare but in the world of B action movies, this is a gem. Last Man Standing seems to have everything going for it - a wonderful lead actor, superb action, a great story, good characters, and even some exciting camera work.

The only reason I bought the dvd was Jeff Wincott. He is truly a great actor, who is highly underrated and a great martial artist too. I have yet to see a film of his that does not capture my attention throughout. In Last Man Standing, Jeff gives another great performance, and probably one of his best. He has a few good punching and kicking scenes, but he also does some good stunt work in some outstanding action scenes.

Everything else about this film was a bonus for me, and what a bonus it was. I had no idea upon purchasing, that this was a Joseph Mehri/Richard Pepin production. For those who do not know who they are, these guys probably have put out the better half of B martial arts/action films thats out there. Some of their films include Deadly Bet (also starring Wincott), Rage, To Be The Best and Final Impact. They also wrote the story and did the directing for this film, which I thought was well done - especially for the action sequences.

The story was wonderful too. Jeff Wincott is a cop named Kurt, who begins to realize that part of the L.A. force is dirty, and involved with a group of guys led by a man who goes by Underwood (Jonathan Fuller). Eventually, both Underwood's force and the police force are trying to take the other out, and Kurt is caught in the middle. Everyone wants him dead, and he wants these guys busted as well. There is alot of suspense, and when I am afraid the best has ended, the story keeps on and usually gets better.

The action is superb. The only thing lacking could be martial arts fighting. There is little in the film, and its a shame cause Wincott is quite athletic, but it actually did not bother me because there is so much story and other types of action that made this movie very loveable. The best action is easily the multiple car chase scenes. Mid-way through the mvoie is easily the best car chase scene I have seen in a B-movie, and so good it can compare to any chase I have ever seen. It involves Wincott on a motorcycle, chasing Underwood and some of his people in a stolen armored truck, leaving a bank robbery. The scene must go on for 10 minutes as dozens of cars flip and explode, and the camera work follows it nicely. Kurt eventually jumps into the truck and fights Underwood in the back before he's knocked out and holding onto chains, swinging all over the highway for his life. Its intense and must-see. The second chase involves 2 corvettes, which is cool in itself.

This is definely a rare gem in the world of B movies. Easily one of Wincott's best films and Mehri/Pepin's best made work so far. If all you want is martial arts action, you won't get that, but if you crave everything else in a great action movie, here it is. Buy this now!

Description

From Sundance Jury Prize winner and three-time Emmy Award-winning filmmaker Paul Stekler (George Wallace: Settin' the Woods on Fire), P.O.V. presents the SXSW audience favorite LAST MAN STANDING, a humorously enlighening nail-biter that Variety calls "an intriguing ground-level look at Texas politics as a full-contact sport...a provacative pic!" If the down-home cowboy politics of George W. Bush seem to be a blueprint for success in Washington these days, what are they like back in the Lone Star state? LAST MAN STANDING takes a camera to Texas to find out in this lively, behind-the-scenes portrait of two unpredictable, post-millennial elections. The first--a battle for state representative between self-proclaimed "right-wing nut" incumbent Rick Green (R) and 24-year-old political newbie Patrick Rose (D)--proves to be a twisting horse race built on bitter personal attacks and door-to-door campaigning. The other--a polarizing race for governor--pits Bush's ascendant state Republican Party against a historic, multi-cultural Democratic ticket. So how did Texas, once a solidy Democratic "Johnson Country" only a generation ago, become known for its dominating brand of Republicanism? Featuring interviews with some of Texas' leading political lights, including former governor Ann Richards, writer Molly Ivins, and "Dubya" strategist Karl Rove, LAST MAN STANDING helps decode the state's electoral dynamics, illuminating national politics in the process. DVD Features: Filmmaker Interview; Resources; Interactive Menus; Scene Selection

3 out of 5 stars Fun For What It Was.......2006-04-15

I guess I would say this DVD is what it is? As a previous reviewer here on Amazon mentioned, this DVD claims to dig deep as to how the state went from LBJ's home to George W's home, and they never did that.

The one message I really took away was the old hag former Governor of Texas, Ann "Another Drink Please" Richards. She was talking about Tony Sanchez and how he was going to spend his millions on the race for Governor. Yet he did worse than Ma Richards did when she was defeated by George W. Bush. Her point was totally shattered and she and the democrat party do not understand that it isn't money that wins these campaigns, it's the ideas. Someone in the video even said that those who want more social programs and more welfare money lost in 2002 when the GOP won. They were right. Those ideas of "take from those with something and give to those who don't want to do anything", don't fly in Texas.

The video was obviously partisan, against the GOP. I found it interesting as a political junkie for the documentary aspect behind the scenes of the campaigns. I thought the access that the film maker got to the two state rep campaigns was pretty cool. Buy it used like I did and then get rid of it like I did, if you're a political junkie, you'll like the 1-hour or so of footage this DVD provides.

3 out of 5 stars documentary on politics.......2005-07-28

Fans of politics will be interested in this question: How far down does the popularity of a president flow? Here, it's regional and Republican, i.e., can W's presence in office will seats for other Texas Republicans? However, the same question was relevant for Democrats when Bill Clinton was in office.

This documentary considers itself to focus on a statewide race and a local one, however, the local race takes precedence and the statewide election was just parsley. This documentary asks, "How did the home state of LBJ turn to Republicanism?" Unfortunately, it never really answers that question.

The purpose for choosing this particular race is because the district was in the center of the state and considered swing. One gets a taste of local flavor because both candidates wear jeans when candidates from any other region would have constantly worn suits. This race was between an incredibly young Democrat and an incumbent Republican who had a slew of ethics violations on his belt. This documentary shows cordialness to be fake: the Republican candidate idly chatted with his opponent and then talked mess behind his back.

One thing shook me to the core and I think apolitical watchers will see this and be disturbed by it as well. The evangelic official talked all this church, church, church but then was as corrupt as he could be. He could quote scripture frequently, but you could tell that he would throw away those same ideas if it were to his advantage. This coverage shows that church folk can be just as sleazy as self-identified sinners. All the resentment toward the Jim Bakers and Jim Joneses will pop into your head as you watch this work. This was an interesting look into human behavior and hypocrisy.

Because there is a gender gap in voters' choices, it was surprising and difficult to see so many women proudly voting Republican. Perhaps the idea of a gender gap is region-specific. The admirable former governor Ann Richards is interviewed here, but I guess her service has not swayed other female residents in her home state.

To be honest, I do think this documentary is intended for progressives, as most POV documentaries are. Still, I think Republicans may enjoy it because it is still brought up that W and most of his allies won their seats.
