Excellent Movie.......2007-09-14
I think all Hallmark movies are brillant and these 4 dvd sequels are brilliant. I highly recommend them to anyone. If you are a struggling christain these will help lift your spirits. At first I didn't know there were 4 that went together, till I got the dvd. Great movie.
Love's Long Journey.......2007-09-11
I have enjoyed all the "Love's...." series i.e. "Love Comes Softly", "Love's Enduring Promise", etc. They have all been great, decent, family-friendly, moral films, without the language and sexual content. I would highly recommend them all for anyone's movie library.
Love's Long Journey.......2007-09-08
All of this movies by Janette Oke and Michael Landon Jr are very very good
no title.......2007-06-26
I think this is the weakest of the 4 movies in series. I hated it when they changed actress's in the 3rd. series and then they changed Marty in the 4 th. series.
I loved 1 and 2 and liked 3 and 4
Ron
This is my favorite of the Love Come's Softly Series.......2007-06-05
I have four of the Love Comes Softly series movies on DVD now and watch them over and over.
This one is my favorite. I am very sad that the story for Missy and Willie didn't continue in the 5th movie, (Loves Unending Legacy) that was on the hallmark channel a couple of months ago. I probably will not buy that one and just stick with the four.

Amazon.com essential video
Just the name "Orient Express" conjures images of a bygone era. Add an all-star cast (including Sean Connery, Ingrid Bergman, Jacqueline Bisset, and Lauren Bacall, to name a few) and Agatha Christie's delicious plot and how can you go wrong? Particularly if you add in Albert Finney as Christie's delightfully persnickety sleuth, Hercule Poirot. Someone has knocked off nasty Richard Widmark on this train trip and, to Poirot's puzzlement, everyone seems to have a motive--just the setup for a terrific whodunit. Though it seems like an ensemble film, director Sidney Lumet gives each of his stars their own solo and each makes the most of it. Bergman went so far as to win an Oscar for her role. But the real scene-stealer is the ever-reliable Finney as the eccentric detective who never misses a trick. --Marshall Fine
Customer Reviews:
Murder on the Orient Express.......2007-07-04
An unrecognizable Finney transforms himself into Agatha Christie's renowned Belgian sleuth, Hercule Poirot. Beyond this star's astonishing portrayal, the fun of this whodunit comes from the fascinating assortment of characters he interrogates, played by some of our most accomplished acting veterans: Lauren Bacall, Ingrid Bergman, Sean Connery, Wendy Hiller, and John Gielgud among them. Predictably, in addition to Finney, old pros Hiller and Gielgud steal the show. "Murder" should be nirvana for any mystery lover, and director Lumet gives the film plenty of period charm and atmosphere.
Unlike so many DVD's, this one is worth owning.......2007-07-03
I remember seeing this movie when I was 5 years old in 1974. Fortunately for me, I forgot "whodunit" and was able to enjoy when I saw it again as a teenager. Having viewed the movie at least 20 times since then, I find it hard to see how plebian works like "The Usual Suspects" garner such rave reviews when such obviously better fare like this exist. Everyone involved in this film gives it their finest effort. Only with many viewings does one get the opportunity to observe the details that are so interwoven into the script and acting. The story is among the most perfect murder mysteries ever penned, and the performance of the cast is resplendent. Throughout, the cast crackles with sparking witty dialog that is matched perfectly with the deftest of facial expressions and gestures that continuously lay clues at your feet until your so confused that you'll be begging at the conclusion to find out who the murderer is.
So few movies stand up to repeated viewing and thus are seldom worth the cost of the DVD or the space it takes up in your home. Buy this movie so you can watch it, so that your parents can watch it, your children and your grandchildren. Heck, you will probably want to mention it in your will!
Beautifully Realized: A Classic Of Its Kind.......2007-07-01
In the early 1960s Agatha Christie (1890-1976) sold the film rights to several of her most celebrated novels--and although the public liked the ensuing films, she herself did not. She was forever after suspicious of the film industry and rejected one offer after another until the early 1970s, when Lord Louis Mountbatten interceded on behalf of son-in-law and film producer John Brabourne for the film rights to MURDER ON THE ORIENT EXPRESS. Christie reluctantly agreed. In 1974, upon seeing the film, she declared it to be the ONLY film version of any of her novels that she liked.
The story is famous. Hercule Poirot (Albert Finney) is a celebrated private investigator traveling via the legendary Orient Express. The train is snowbound in the Balkans--and Mr. Rachett (Richard Widmark) is found brutally stabbed in the bed of his luxury room. At the request of Signor Bianchi (Martin Balsam), an official of the train, Poriot agrees to investigate the murder... but the more he learns from the numerous passengers, the more impossible the crime seems.
Even today, most film versions of Christie novels are played with a bit of a twinkle in the eye, as if to say "this is all just in good fun." Not so MURDER ON THE ORIENT EXPRESS. The all star cast includes John Gilegud, Lauren Bacall, Ingrid Bergman, Michael York, Jacqueline Bisset, Sean Connery, Vanessa Redgrave, Anthony Perkins, and Rachel Roberts, to name but the most obvious, and they play out the story with tremendous style but without the self-knowing cuteness that tends to undercut most similar films. The novel is among the more convoluted Christie works, but the Paul Dehn manages to encapsulate it without simplifying it. And then there is the look and sound and feel of the movie, which is simply amazing.
The Orient Express had passed into legend by 1974, but this film returns the celebrated luxury train to sparkling reality. From costumes to art design, from cinematography to score, MURDER ON THE ORIENT EXPRESS is so richly detailed that it becomes an almost tactile experience. This is truly an example of "no expense spared." The film was nominated for no fewer than six Academy Awards, winning one for Ingrid Bergman, and was also nominated for no fewer than seventeen awards from other groups, winning at least six. All in all, it was one of the most celebrated films of its era.
For many years MURDER ON THE ORIENT EXPRESS was only available in mediocre VHS and DVD transfers, but this particular edition not only returns the film to a near-pristine state, it includes several memorable bonuses as well, most especially a "making of" documentary that includes many of the cast members; a short documentary on Agatha Christie; and a short documentary on the Lindberg kidnapping, which was among Christie's inspirations for the novel. Slick, beautiful, and seductive, the 1974 MURDER ON THE ORIENT EXPRESS sets a standard for mystery movies that few have equaled--and none have surpassed. Strongly recommended.
GFT, Amazon Reviewer
The Best of Christie.......2007-06-12
Murder on the Orient Express is undoubtedly the best Christie mystery ever filmed. Not only is the acting superb, the producers and writers stayed very close to the original novel in their presentation, which was not true in later Christie presentations by the same production team. But in Orient Express one gets a real feel for what it was like to travel from Istanbul on the Calais Coach.
Christie's best.......2007-05-29
The best of the movies from Christie's books, Well done and a lot of fun.

With its hallucinatory visions of crawling dead babies and a grungy plunge into the filthiest toilet in Scotland, you might not think Trainspotting could have been one of the best movies of 1996, but Danny Boyle's film about unrepentant heroin addicts in Edinburgh is all that and more. That doesn't make it everybody's cup of tea (so unsuspecting viewers beware), but the film's blend of hyperkinetic humor and real-life horror is constantly fascinating, and the entire cast (led by Ewan McGregor and Full Monty star Robert Carlyle) bursts off of the screen in a supernova of outrageous energy. Adapted by John Hodge from the acclaimed novel by Irving Welsh, the film was a phenomenal hit in England, Scotland, and (to a lesser extent) the U.S. For all of its comedic vitality and invigorating filmmaking, the movie is no ode to heroin, nor is it a straight-laced cautionary tale. Trainspotting is just a very honest and well-made film about the nature of addiction, and it doesn't pull any punches when it is time to show the alternating pleasure and pain of substance abuse. --Jeff Shannon
Description
From the director of 28 DAYS LATER ... The motion picture sensation that wowed critics and audiences nationwide, TRAINSPOTTING delivers a wild mix of rebellious action and wicked humor! It's the story of four friends as they try to make it in the world on their own terms ... and who end up planning the ultimate scam! Powered by an outstanding cast of stars including Ewan McGregor (BIG FISH, STAR WARS EPISODES I, II & III) Robert Carlyle (THE WORLD IS NOT ENOUGH, THE FULL MONTY) and Jonny Lee Miller (DRACULA 2000, MANSFIELD PARK), and a high-energy soundtrack, TRAINSPOTTING is spectacular, groundbreaking entertainment!
Customer Reviews:
doesnt get any better -- my favorite movie.......2007-09-06
ive seen it 32 times and counting -- never a waste of time!! LOVE IT!!!
Has everything.......2007-07-30
Overall, Trainspotting is one of the best movies ever made, it's that simple. What a trip this movie is. The dialogue, setting, acting and soundtrack are exceptional. It is at once incredibly disturbing, extremely suspensful, ridiculously funny and very much moving. It's almost a character study. We see what Rents goes through and whether we can relate to it or not(I hope not) doesn't matter because it's thoroughly engaging. Robert Carlyle (Begbie) is insanely funny, and completely psychotic as well. Spud is completely hopeless, yet we sympathize with him. Sick Boy is troubled yet appears successful and happy on the outside. Does Rents deserve what he gets(or takes) in the end? You be the judge. Just be prepared to go from being shocked, to sad, to frustrated, in stitches and finally to utterly pleased. It doesn't get much better than this.
Yay for Scots, even drug addled ones.......2007-07-23
I love this movie, have for awhile. Even if you hate it, it's one of those things you should at least see because it's often referenced. Of course, you shouldn't buy it if you hate it, or if you can't see any good in heroin addicts, but heroin addicts with Scottish accents are just easier to like, I guess. For fans of the film, this is a RIDICULOUSLY cheap price for not only the director's cut, but a special bonus disc teaming with features as well. I feel good about my purchase, shouldn't you?
Trainspotting.......2007-07-18
This witty, hallucinatory adaptation of Irvine Welsh's bestseller is an outrageously entertaining glimpse at dead-end lives, peopled with a remarkable cast of over-the-top characters who made the film an international hit. In his breakout role, McGregor is endearing as a ratty doper who just can't handle the notion of straight life, no matter how hard he tries. Boyle's energetic direction of a sterling ensemble cast--including Bremner, Miller, and "Full Monty" star Robert Carlyle, playing Mark's scornful, hard-drinking pal, Begbie--is tone-perfect, as are his inspired dramatizations of Renton's loopier, drug-induced nightmares. By turns shocking, morbid and funny, "Trainspotting" is an honest, scathing look at addiction.
A True Down-To-Earth story you can relate to........2007-06-30
There are plenty of movies that show the traditional comming of age tale, but nothing compares to the comical, extreme and sometimes painfully true film that is 'Trainspotting'. Trainspotting is the story of five screwed up pals looked upon as the dirt and rejected in their Scottish upbrining. Each over their heads in their own screwed up addictions. Everything from substance abuse, to theivery, to petefilia, these guys have dug their own graves so deep it would be a miricle to get out of it. Yet the main character Mark Renton played by the brilliant Ewen McGreggor is the one that is forced to change his ways against his own will. Through loving parants and a high school student he accidentally had relations with, Mark manages to begin enjoying life. Even when temptation arrives again in the form of his mates he still manages to free himself eventhough he admits to being a bad person he knows he is on the right track with our without the people that made a major impression on his life.
This story is one of the most relatable ones I have seen in all the movies I have seen that tell this story. In life we all grow up with a small circle of friends. These are the people who let into the deepest darkest corners of our souls. Even if they may the most brilliant of people, or low lives, from those who are pure to those that are pure evil we kept them close just because they trusted and understood who we were. Yet a time comes in all our lives where we must face the real world put aside the childish games and sacrifce our time to jobs and keep our lives in line with modern society. It is up to those same friends who we still hold dear to our hearts or just hate to join or be left behind in the gutter to rot. It is not because we are bad people who don't care about others, it's because they are not willing to join us on the road ahead.

The Polar Express
ASIN: B000AGTPUU
Release Date: 2005-12-26 |

Destined to become a holiday perennial, The Polar Express also heralded a brave new world of all-digital filmmaking. Critics and audiences were divided between those who hailed it as an instant classic that captures the visual splendor and evocative innocence of Chris Van Allsburg's popular children's book, and those who felt that the innovative use of "performance capture"--to accurately translate live performances into all-digital characters--was an eerie and not-quite-lifelike distraction from the story's epic-scale North Pole adventure. In any case it's a benign, kind-hearted celebration of the yuletide spirit, especially for kids who have almost grown out of their need to believe in Santa Claus. Tom Hanks is the nominal "star" who performs five different computer-generated characters, but it's the visuals that steal this show, as director Robert Zemeckis indulges his tireless pursuit of technological innovation. No matter how you respond to the many wonders on display, it's clear that The Polar Express represents a significant milestone in the digital revolution of cinema. If it also fills you with the joy of Christmas (in spite of its Nuremberg-like rally of frantic elves), so much the better. --Jeff Shannon

This should be in every Christmas lovers library of Classic Christmas tales! Wonderful color and just a really nice little movie!
Ultimate Entertainment Anytime Of The Year.......2007-08-09
This Grandma and Grandpa has watched this over and over with the Grandkids, and it does'nt just have to be during Christmas Time.
Super.......2007-07-15
Movie is somewhat scary for children in places, but overall great adaptation of the book.
A magical movie.......2007-06-26
If there's such a thing as magic this movie is it. Lots of cool racing scenes and good interaction with adults and the kids in this movie. Though I don't believe in Santa I do recommend seeing this movie. Your children will love it, mine did!
A New Christmas Tradition.......2007-06-20
My children loved this book. My favorite moments during the holidays revolve around having my grandchildren--sitting on my lap and surrounding me--watch this DVD with me. I turn up the sound so that the appearance of the train at the beginning of the film rattles the plates in the cabinet in the kitchen. This film is one of my favorite films. And it's one my grandchildren love too, both at Christmas and sometimes early to late in July when the little ones begin to think about the hope for snow and presents.

Given the presence of both Steve Martin and John Candy, one would expect this John Hughes comedy to be much, much funnier than it is. Certainly it's not for lack of effort on the part of its stars. Martin is an uptight businessman trying to get home from New York for the holidays. But one thing after another gets in his way--most of it having to do with Candy, a boorish but well-meaning boob who takes a liking to him. Together they travel all over the map; no matter how hard Martin tries to shake him, he can't. But Hughes's writing is never as sharp as it should be and this film winds up being only intermittently humorous. --Marshall Fine

"And if they told you wolverines would make good house pets, would you believe them?".......2007-08-08
This is the funniest movie ever. Deserves 100 stars.
I have seen it at least 40 times and have several friends who quote instances of the movie as it relates to every day life and mundane activities. Perhaps it's a guy thing but anyone who has ever flown or taken mass transportation - especially when they HAVE to be somewhere or catch a connecting flight - can relate to what Martin and Candy endure in a hellish return trip to Chicago. I am not big on buying DVDs but this one is one of the few that deserves a permanent home in your collection.
One of our family favorites.................2007-04-17
We watched this movie together at the
last Thanksgiving dinner with our Grandfather
and we all loved this movie. It is etched into
our family memories. Great movie to share with
your family and loved ones.
Highly recommended.
One of the best road trip comedies, if not the best.......2007-03-16
Plane Trains and Automobiles is about a NY worker who wants to get home to his family in Chicago for Thanksgiving. Traveling is nuts though and if he's going to get home he's gonna have to rely on a talkative and clingy but good hearted salesman (John Candy). It's predictable that he's going to keep bumping into to Candy whether he wants to or not and that they're gonna keep having to travel together whether he's like it or not.
Plus you know Candy is going to drive him more and more crazy. Yet when it tacks on a heart-warming ending and gets you to feel bad for Candy you can't help feeling like you just saw something special. I mean after driving both the viewer and Martin nuts with his antics, you can't help but want to hug the guy at the end anyway. I think Candy should've been nominated. His character means well but he's a mess up but when it's time for the touching stuff at the end it's hard not to get teared up. He makes the viewer want to ring his neck like he makes Martin want to but when he gets Martin to feel bad for him he gets the viewer to as well. It's really his best work. It's probably director John Hughes best work too, well next to the Breakast Club anyway.
One of my all time favorites.......2007-02-23
Can't believe it's been twenty years, but this movie is still just as funny today as when it came out. Great script-a perfect cast and more laugh out loud moments than should be allowed. How Steve Martin's character made it through this trip through hell (some times literally) without murdering his thrust upon companion is just beyond me. The whole "you're driving the wrong way" scene is truely a classic as well as the question: 'Where is your other hand?'. Absolutely a joy. Highly, highly recommended.
PLANES/TRAINS/AND AUTOMOBILES.......2007-02-02
THIS MOVIE WAS HILARIOUS. I DONT LAUGH OUTLOUD OFTEN BUT THIS MOVIE IS GREAT!!
Customer Reviews:
great for 2 and 4 year olds.......2007-08-23
Caillou has a bit of an annoying voice at first, but if you can get over that it's really quite a sweet boy. I agree the puppets inbetween episodes is pretty boring for the 2, but the 4 is moderately interested. Calillou is 4 and has a younger sister around 1, so it fits our family well. I like these quite a bit, definitely worth getting if you are looking for a calm "cartoon".
Caillous Extras.......2007-08-13
My 2 year old daughter loves Caillou, but wasn't very interested in the puppets that take up at least 1/2 of this video time. Still satisfied the Caillou fix, though!
Grat for little ones.......2007-08-01
My two year old daughter can't get enough of Caillou so this DVD fills the need. She really seems to enjoy watching it over and over.
teachermommy.......2007-06-27
My kids love Caillou. Caillou goes on many adventures and teaches lessons along the way. Keeps kids attention for the whole movie! Great!
Description
The Alfred Hitchcock Signature Collection contains the DVD debut of 8 Hitchcock classics including "Strangers on a Train Two-Disc Special Edition," and the following 7 new single-disc DVDs: "Dial M For Murder," "Foreign Correspondent" "Suspicion," "The Wrong Man," "Stage Fright," "I Confess" and "Mr. and Mrs. Smith." The previously released "North by Northwest" is also included in the 10-disc Signature Collection. Each of the 9 films in the collection shows why Hitchcock is regarded as one of Hollywood's most esteemed and important directors, and also brings legendary stars to the digital front including Cary Grant, Henry Fonda, Marlene Dietrich, Grace Kelly, Montgomery Clift and many others.
Strangers on a Train - En route from Washington, D.C., champion tennis player Guy Haines (Farley Granger) meets pushy playboy Bruno Anthony (Robert Walker). What begins as a chance encounter turns into a series of morbid confrontations, as Bruno manipulates his way into Guy's life. Bruno is eager to kill his father and knows Guy wants to marry a senator's daughter (Ruth Roman) but can't get a divorce from his wife. So Bruno suggests the men swap murders, which would leave no traceable clues or possible motives. Though Guy refuses, it won't be easy to rid himself of the psychopathic Bruno. Hitchcock's daughter Patricia appears in this film. The extra features included on the DVD are: Alternate 'preview' version of the film; Commentary by director Peter Bogdanovich, Psycho screenwriter Joseph Stephano, Strangers on a Train author Patricia Highsmith and biographer Andrew Wilson; New making-of documentary Strangers on a Train: A Hitchcock Classic, with Farley Granger, film historian Richard Schickel, Patricia Hitchcock O'Connell and other Hitchcock family members and colleagues recalling the making of this suspense landmark; Three intriguing featurettes: The Hitchcocks on Hitch, Strangers on a Train: The Victim's P.O.V., Strangers on a Train by M. Night Shyamalan; Alfred Hitchcock's Historical Meeting, a vintage newsreel.
Each DVD will be presented in a format preserving the aspect ratio of its original theatrical exhibition and will include the original theatrical trailer, and subtitles in English, French and Spanish.

Pick this along with Masterpiece Collection and you're done!.......2007-08-23
This collection is brilliant and the packaging is insignificant, It is just 9 standard DVD boxes put in one outer box.
This set does not include certain must-have classics like
Psycho
Vertigo
Rear Window
The Rope,
The Man Who Knew Too Much etc
All this is available in the brilliant Masterpiece Collection which I picked up from here.
So if you buy these 2 box sets, you're done!!!

a must for a fan.......2007-03-08
As a long time fan of Hitchcock, I am always looking for more. I have approx. 20 of his films on DVD. This collection has some that I had never seen before. In addition, the "making of" special features are great for someone who wants to know what made Hitch so unique as a film director. I have (and will) spend many hours viewing these discs.

If you an Alfred Hitchock movie fan, you need to get this box set. There are some movies, I haven't seen before, but I did enjoy them.

Thomas and Friend - Thomas' Halloween Adventures.......2007-05-09
Very happy with the purchase - My grandson just loved the dvd and toy that came with it.
Great Video.......2007-02-14
This is a pretty good complimation of episodes from other videos that are about Halloween.Just to let you know,Thomas Gets Tricked, which has George Carlin's narraration for the first time, was put in,because "trick" was in there,as it is a part of "Trick-or-Treat".It also has Diesel's Devious Deed, which was re-named to Diesel's Devilious Deed,or something like that to make it more Halloween-ish.This video is really good for around the holiday times.
Front Cover Misleading..........2007-02-08
I was dissapointed when my son received this DVD as it didn't have some episodes I thought it would. Why on earth would they show Emily on the front cover with Thomas (from the newer episode "Halloween") and not even include that episode? It didn't have Flour Power either. Even more misleading is that one of the reviews here lists those episodes as being on this DVD. Unfortunately that was one of the few reviews here when I put it on my son's Christmas list last fall.
While this does have some good episodes that I am happy to own on DVD, I don't understand why they made a Halloween DVD without the newer Halloween episodes and why they made such a misleading cover (Emily isn't in a single episode on this DVD).

Excellent Dog Training From Beginner to Intermediate.......2007-06-13
I found this DVD to be excellent in presenting the kind of material that I needed to communicate effectively with my dogs. I applied the techniques and they worked almost immediately. In addition, it is a methodology that I and my dogs feel comfortable with and it seems to increase our bond together. I would recommend Laura Bourhenne's and Nicole Wilde's DVD to anyone who needs a simple, effective and enjoyable method of shaping their pet's behavior. In my opinion anyone who rates this DVD lower than at least a 4 is either a competitor or has absolutely no clue about dog training methodologies.

Best source of training I have used........2007-06-09
I hired a trainor (very expensive) for my newly adopted dog and didn't like his methods. He used a choke collar which clearly hurt my dog so needless to say I couldn't follow his method.
I watched this video and loved the methods that Nicole and Laura used. They are very gentle (and I stress that). Each segment is short and easy to follow and remember.
I would highly recommend this video to those that want a gentle method and something that is easy to follow. Best thing is that if I forget something I can go back to it without having to pay an additional charge
I give this training video a thumbs up!
Unprofessional, sometimes confusing, often silly!.......2007-06-04
"Honey, I just got Pinnacle Studio software. Let me grab the camera and we can make a dog training video. Why don't you call Marge next door if she wants to be famous, she can be in it too. You guys are a hoot together!"
That is how it came off- unprofessional and silly. They would have benefited from having a script to follow rather than adlibbing it.
The actual training information was really confusing. I got the sense that the dogs were doing what they were doing for the treats and not really learning anything. They say not to bribe but there is no section on how to wean them from doing for treats and doing as they are told.
Education theory includes positive and negative reinforcement (included here) as well as positive and negative punishment (excluded from this book). Effective training integrates all four approaches.
Not what I was expecting.......2007-05-25
I wanted a video on positive dog training using a clicker, so members of our dog rescue could learn about it and see it done. We are all experienced dog owners and handlers. First I purchased Karen Pryor's clicker training video. While Pryor's video presented the material well, the video's production quality left much to be desired. Wilde's video seemed more up to date and the write ups promoted it as a great teaching tool. Wilde's video presents very basic lessons using a clicker. This video is suitable for the novice dog owner, and the short lessons are an especially good way to show children how to interact with their new dog. However, the video is designed for the novice owner. This is not a video for the experienced handler interested in learning about positive dog training and use of a clicker on a deeper level.
Annoying .......2007-05-07
Even if it works...these people are annoying. I am all about positive training but I'm surprised I made it throught the whole video.
BUT...it was informative and useful.

This is one of John Frankenheimer's breathless gems--all marvelous action that never lets up. Burt Lancaster plays a French train engineer during the waning days of the German occupation who tries to prevent Nazi colonel Paul Scofield from transporting a precious art collection back to Germany. Utilizing sabotage and cunning deception, Lancaster and his Resistance colleagues stall for time with the Allies on their way. It's a brilliantly made film, showing off Lancaster's acrobatic skills (he performed all of his own stunts) and Frankenheimer's sense of pacing and brilliant use of space. It's choreographed with the utmost precision (those are real explosions during the pivotal strafing sequence) and extremely authentic in its details. Lancaster is in rare minimalist form, and Scofield manages to extract intelligence and sympathy. A firecracker action film shot in crisp black and white, with yet another telling audio commentary by the always instructive director. --Bill Desowitz
Description
Paris, August 1944. With the Allied army closing in, German commander and art fanatic Colonel von Waldheim (Paul Scofield) steals a vast collection of rare French paintings and loads them onto a train bound for Berlin. But when a beloved French patriot is murdered while trying to sabotage von Waldheim's scheme, Labiche (Burt Lancaster), a stalwart member of the Resistance, vows to stop the train at any cost. Calling upon his vast arsenal of skills, Labiche unleashes a torrent of devastation anddestructionloosened rails, shattered tracks and head-on collisionsin an impassioned, suspense-filled quest for justice, retribution and revenge. Inspired by an actual event and highlighted by spectacular stuntwork and visual effects, The Train is "an edge-of-your-seat, thrilling, suspenseful and superior film" (The Motion Picture Guide).

Unbelievable special effects (with no CGI or camera tricks). Train lovers..Enjoy ! .......2007-08-26
If you miss this black and white patriotic action thriller, you have missed greatest action movie ever done without any CGI.
The stunts for 1964 is just mind-blowing. Real trains and yards are blown up with tons of explosives. Real trains getting detailed and involved in head-on collisions.
Breathtaking chases in WWII setting. Actor Lancaster does his own stunts with no dupes (see him falling from top of mountain and reaching a small store house all in one shot, all in focus. Any actor dare this these days ? The cinematography is great with everything in focus right from top of the mountain and underneath railroad tracks. Direction from Frankenheimer is gift for Train lovers. The drama between Patriotic French and brutal German general is absorbing with original accents. Don't miss director's commentary in the mastered DVD.
I am surprised why this movie although a classic is not included in 100 greatest films by AFI. Really a shame.
I don't think any movie till date comes close to this (without CGI effects, no miniature sets, no bluescreen, no ticks. ALL REAL). What you would regret in this flawless movie is that it is not a Color movie. Nothing else to complain. Don't miss !
Burt Lancaster in the Train.......2007-08-13
A great movie -- I've watched it on TV several times and finally broke down and bought it. One of the best WWII movies.
They don't film them like this any more...........2007-07-18
This movie was made in the mid 1960's and back then the actions scenes were either real, actual footage or models. The Train is real all the way. Those are real locomaotives being smashed in to each other. Greatest train wreck I've ever seen. View it with the director commentary on and you will find out many interesting things that went in to the production of the movie. Even if you've seen it already, it is worth buying for this feature alone.
The Train... for High School students learning French or History.......2007-07-17
I showed the DVD "The Train" to my French Language students in Year 7, aged 12 - 13 years. The students all thoroughly enjoyed the film and came running to class excitedly, wanting to see the next 40 mins! While being occupied with the main characters' activities and hoping they succeed in saving the Train and its cargo, the students also come to understand what is meant by the German Occupation of France; the bravery of men and women who worked for the Resistance at this time; the injustices and fear suffered by regular French citizens;and the appreciation the French still feel towards the Allies who freed their country from Occupation. A wonderful way to teach young people about that era in France's history!
A question of morality.. transfer slightly below grade.......2007-05-17
Are great works of art worth the lives of many human beings to protect them?Lancaster is at his best , the film is swift and rousing, and the trains are the real star of the show. There are explosions and nazis and french resistance fighters and then there is Jeanne Morreau. What more can you ask for? A crackerjack directors commentary by John Frankenheimer , that is worth the price of admission.Transfer is a tad soft, audio good;but dvd content well worth the $9.00 they are asking.(in black & white)
