Only one film under his belt, and already Flynn Carsen (Noah Wylie) is talking like Indiana Jones. "Relax," he tells a companion before daringly retrieving an ancient artifact before it can be used for evil. "This kind of stuff happens to me all the time." A character of modest charms (much like this made-for-cable movie), Carsen is not your typical movie action hero. His brain serves him better than his brawn. Early on, his knowledge of vegetation plays a key role in a cliff-jumping escape from pursuing bad guys. Carsen, for those just tuning in, is a librarian at the Metropolitan Library, which secretly houses history's mythic artifacts, including the sword Excalibur, and the Shroud of Turin. The fate of the world is once again in Carsen's hands when a map to the legendary King Solomon's Mines is stolen. Carsen embarks on another fantastic global adventure, with stops in Casablanca (with inevitable references to the Humphrey Bogart classic) and Kenya. This time, he has new female companionship, Emily (Gabrielle Anwar), a beautiful archaeologist who can match the much-educated Carsen degree for degree. Reprising their roles from the first film are Olympia Dukakis as Flynn's meddling mother, who tries to fix him up with his third cousin ("You'll have plenty to talk about"), Jane Curtin as flinty library administrator, Charlene ("Save your receipts"), and Bob Newhart as his mentor, Judson. Savvy viewers will see plot twists and character revelations coming from a mile away, but that is all part of the fun, as are the hokey special effects and knowing humor ("There's always a secret passage," Carsen observes while navigating a catacomb). Who know if there will ever be another Indiana Jones movie. Until then, The Librarian is worth checking out, especially on DVD, where it can be enjoyed without intrusive commercial interruption. --Donald Liebenson

Same plot issues as the Mummy without the high budget for extrordinary special effects. Just a cute escape movie that is really fun to watch. It has love interest, action and special effects. Personally, my husband and I love both Librarian movies!

I love this movie, I have the first one too. I saw them on TNT, and I was so glad when they put them on DVD. I had my Dad watch them, and he loved them too, they are just too funny. And who hates Noah Wyle. :)

Adventure yarns don't come more ripping than King Solomon's Mines, the classic Great White Hunter tale. Novelist H. Rider Haggard's hero, Allan Quatermain (Stewart Granger), reluctantly agrees to lead an Englishwoman (Deborah Kerr) and her brother (Richard Carlson) deep into uncharted territory in Africa, in search of the lady's lost husband. The location shooting, including tribal rituals, is marvelous throughout, and the movie manages to pack a great deal of material into 102 minutes without ever seeming rushed. A remake of a 1937 film, King Solomon's Mines was itself remade badly, with Richard Chamberlain, in 1985, and Quatermain was essayed by Sean Connery in League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, but purists will prefer Stewart Granger's stalwart-yet-sardonic hero--his career never quite got over the role. --Robert Horton

This version of the classic story by H. Rider Haggard has always been my favorite. Stewart Granger WAS Allan Quatermain and filming in Africa extended the illusion that this was more 'authentic' then the other versions filmed. Still a fun film to watch

Entirely filmed in Africa, this genial movie impresses not only with the acting, but also the fabulous shots of the wildlife. Because of the age of the movie, it is so very impressing so see close shots of elephants, lions, zebras, monkeys ect. You can really see the hardships of the actors who - as their roles - had to endure bugs, heat and so on. Really a very original and most interesting film. Will appeal to nature lovers, people who like adventuremovies, and people who are interested ind historical movies.

Cinema for a Hot Summer Night!.......2007-07-05

Despite the perfectly silly, not to mention offensive, trailer (which certainly would not fly today), "King Solomon's Mines" remains an excellent adventure film that ought to be digitally remastered (with original scenes restored), so we could see the splendid tribal dances and the magnificent footage of animals in the wild in the film's pristine color. I first saw this film on the big screen as a kid, and it spurred me on to read all the Allan Quatermaine adventure novels. The movie, which necessarily omits various characters and episodes, did not spoil my reading experience one whit. In fact, it allowed me to picture those incredibly beautiful landscapes of Kenya, Tanganyika (as it was then called), and the Congo as I read on to the end.

That said, I must now comment on some flaws. One can be attributed, perhaps, to loss of some of the footage: The Watusi dance was not only twice as long, but it was also the high point of the film. The lack of the original dance footage makes the ending seem abrupt. The other, in hindsight, can certainly be attributed to lack of judgment on the part of the Big Studio Moguls, for whom Big Names as well as Bucks meant more than continuity in casting and production values. These imperfections bothered me then, and they bother me now. The first point is a minor but nevertheless evident one: Richard Carlson's American accent. It is hard to believe that he is the brother of Deborah Kerr, whose English diction is so pure. Furthermore, Stewart Grainger's genuine English does not help make Carlson's character any more believable. The next point probably bothers no one but a persnickety purist such as myself, but when Deborah Kerr finally shears off her long Victorian locks, they are transformed into an elegant 1950s Audrey Hepburn-Roman-Holiday-like perm that remains bouncy no matter how humid the jungle, how dry the desert! Even though the directors do give verisimilitude a nod when she gets dunked into the underground stream, the "girl with the fire hair," as the film-trailer blared, emerges with every red-gold ringlet in tact (I wish I knew her secret----or her hairdresser!).

This film, which is recommended for the entire family, deserves to be re-issued in a remastered version. The movie contains none of the inappropriate nonsense of the trailer. In the meantime, following Stewart Granger, Deborah Kerr----okay, even Richard Carlson!---vicariously on an 1897 Safari through the lush rainforests, the golden savannahs, the silver deserts and green hills of a good portion of Africa is an excellent way to spend a summer evening.

Shot on location in Africa, and featuring the winning team of Granger and Kerr, "Mines" is is a handsome, pounding adventure film with plenty of thrills and romance. Thanks to spectacular camerawork by Oscar winner Robert Surtees, the movie is indispensable purely on a visual level, but Granger and Kerr emit powerful screen chemistry too, which makes the epic journey- including snakes, spiders, lions, rhinos, and assorted African tribes-that much more exhilarating.

It is an older movie but still good and clean. Yes, there is an elephant killed in the first scene but it isn't that bad and there were no REAL elephants killed in this movie.

A woman and her brother seek Allan Quartermaine's help in finding her lost husband.

Afraid I was not very pleased with DVD packaging the plastic box to the DVD was all stuck up with Security tags which has left it all sticky hence I have to find another box and The DVD picture cover itself was stuck with selotape which took some of the picture off.
I like my DVD's to be in mint condition if I buy brand new ones. I should have sent it back but did not want the hassle of posting back.
The supplier needs to be aware of these points.

KING SOLOMON'S MINES and ALLAN QUATERMAIN AND THE LOST CITY OF GOLD are typically over-shadowed by the bigger budget INDIANA JONES trilogy. There is good reason for that; the IJ movies are the apex of the action movie genre. However, that's not a good reason NOT to watch these two flicks.

The films detail the exploits of a hero named Allan Quatermain (Richard Chamberlain) and his girlfriend / fiancee Jessie (Sharon Stone). Together they make up a sort of Indiana Jones character as he is an adventureman while she is a scholar / philologist.

The two films lead them to exotic places where they must fend off natives as well as bad guys who are out to kill them. THE LOST CITY OF GOLD also features James Earl Jones as a friend of Allan's who joins them in their adventure.

If adventure movies are your thing, then these two belong on your shelf of DVDs. Yes, they are somewhat low budget and the monsters in them are not particularly convincing. However, that is not really the "point." These movies are FUN! The soundtracks are very good and we also get to see Sharon Stone in the prime of her beauty. What more could you ask for? Huh?

"King Solomon's Mines" is a hilarious and crazy adventure/comedy movie. The film is action packed, moving from one action scene to another. Some of my memorable adventure scenes include such antics as jumping down waterfalls and mountains, encountering Nazi soldiers, man-eating crocodiles, cannibals and being lost in a mine filled with dangerous animals and booby traps. The adventure has many funny sides to it as you will laugh as Allan Quatermain and Jessie Huston, among other things, have to fight enemy soldiers, fierce animals and reptiles, escape from blood thirsty cannibals.

The storyline is straightforward enough. A famous white hunter Allan Quatermain (played well by Richard Chamberlain) is convinced by Jesse Huston (Played equally well by Sharon Stone) to free her father who is in the custody of some ruthless villains. The father has a map to King Solomon's Mines. From this, an action packed adventure unfolds that should keep the audience not only thrilled by also laughing. Fans of Richard Chamberlain, in particular, will enjoy seeing him playing the uncharacteristic comedian role. John Rhys-Davies plays his role as a thoroughly bad man exceptionally well.

There are some limitations about this movie. The movie significantly departs from the story is the famous book by the same title written by H. Rider Haggard. The producers added various elements that they thought would appeal to the audience and in the process spoiled an opportunity to make a first rate film. There is also an element of ripping off of the Indiana Jones movies. Worse still, the film presents a negative stereotype of Africans. The special effects are not what one would expect. All these spoil an otherwise commendable attempt at making an excellent movie.

Overall an enjoyable movie, particularly for those who enjoy ridiculous humour. Adventure lovers will certainly also enjoy it as the action is non-stop and the suspense is riveting.

Best movie adaptation!.......2007-01-29

This movie was an unexpected pleasure and really fun to watch!
Swayze does a great job as Quartermaine & Alison Doody is wonderful as the female lead. There are never annoying moments of disgusted "They'd never do that", or ridiculous temple-of-doom type comedy lines. The screenplay and plot were terrific, the adventure was compelling, and the entire movie was heartwarming. Villains were even well-wrought. Scenery was breathtaking.
Well done, highly recommended, and perfect for family viewing on a Sunday afternoon or early Saturday evening.

This movie looked to be a television movie put onto video from the Hallmark Channel. Accordingly, it does not have big special effects or big actors and the script is a little choppy. Yes, it also has breaks where commercials would probably fit in.

However, that being said, this film was a good adventure for those who have not seen the other movie and have not read the book. Additionally, this book is a decent movie for families, with minimal gore. You don't see blood flying when someone gets shot or stabbed by a spear. You don't even see a single vulture when the living characters talk about vultures plucking the eyes out of dying men. It is left to the imagination, the way that movies used to be.

So, yes, this is a TV movie put onto DVD. However, if you're looking for something that you can feel comfortable watching with your 10+ year old, this is a decent purchase.

Patrick Swayze does a nice job here as Alan Quartermain. This is a well made adventure movie, with an exellent screenplay by Steve H. Berman. It is the best movie version. GO out and get it, highly reccomended

Adaptation of a film rather than the book.......2006-05-30

I read with interest the opinion of some reviewers that this version of King Solomon's Mines varies greatly from the book. It does indeed! However, it is a pretty good remake of the other film attempts to retell the story. The Stewart Granger version of the 1950s was very dramatic, while Richard Chamberlain's later attempt was a purely fun romp. I think that this new version with Patrick Swayze is a fine cross between the two--enough Indiana Jones to induce smiles, and enough drama to keep the characters interesting. It's worth the view.

Why Can't Hollywood leave the book alone??.......2006-04-05

Despite the fact that this movie is fairly entertaining and far better than previous attempts to capture King Solomon's Mines on film, it lacks the sense of atmosphere, drama and period of the original book. In fact, it is so different from the book, that had the names been changed, no one would have recognized that it was adapted from Haggard's novel.
Instead of an engaging adventure story of (bachelor) gentlemen treasure seekers in Africa, a lost tribe, evil tribesmen, a little magic, narrow escapes and lots of suspense, we get a sappy story of a young woman looking for her father who has been disappeared in Africa, and by the way, there might be a treasure. She is, by the way, beautiful and blond, and her Great Lash Mascara never runs.
Hollywood has thrown in some evil Russians searching for the "Stone of the Ancestors" on a mission from the Russian Czar and has, of course, made Quartermain fall madly in love with the blond. Gagool, the most evil of ancient women witch doctors (in the book) has been dumbed down to a gentle white faced and benevolent Geisha-like fairy godmother who saves the elderly father from death. King Solomon's Mines are conveniently located in downtown Kukuanaland and the lovely Gagool hands over the key, and takes them to the door.
True to the genre, the moment they grab the stone of the ancestors the door comes down and they are trapped in the mine! We are terrified by the suspense for at least 15 seconds, and then they find the way out, the walls come crashing down, they tumble to the ground laughing and decide to get married. The End.

Into the mines.......2007-03-04

There have been plenty of adaptations of "King Solomon's Mines," the first of H. Rider Haggard's adventure novels. And the 1937 version is a solid if uninspired adaptation, with some good-to-excellent acting and a fairly faithful script, although I'm not sure where the Irish pair came from.

A strange wagon arrives at the camp of hunter Allan Quartermaine (Cedric Hardwicke), who's escorting a group of Europeans to the African coast. An unlucky Irish prospector goes off with the wagon, and a copy of a treasure map that supposedly leads to King Solomon's diamond mines. When Quartermaine refuses to go back after him, the prospector's daughter Kathy (Anna Lee) secretly makes off with his wagons.

Led by a mysterious native named Umbopa (Paul Robeson), the little group faces a trek across a blistering desert that no one has (supposedly) crossed alive. But when they do make it to the other side, they find that there is something even more dangerous -- a tribe of natives ruled by a ruthless chief, who has a very personal connection to Umbopa...

This is actually a pretty faithful adaptation of the original novel, with plenty of good-ish acting and startlingly good special effects. If there's a problem, it's that there's no real character development except for Umbopa, and for an adventure tale, it's actually rather low on appreciable action (although there's one good battle scene).

But it's a magnificent spectacle, and I can only imagine what it would have looked like in color. Sweeping deserts, big African villages, and even a climax that takes place INSIDE a volcano, complete with bubbling lava and collapsing tunnels. And the slowly unfolding storyline is very well-drawn, whether it's the slow journey across the desert or the sumptuous tropics of the oasis near where the tribe leaves.

Though Hardwicke is the lead character -- and does a pretty good job -- it's Paul Robeson who really rules this movie, with his majestic demeanor and rich, rolling voice. Roland Young provides a bit of stodgy comic relief, but John Loder is forgettable and Lee is simply an embarrassing caricature of an Irish colleen. I'd love to know how she always stays spotless and perfectly coiffed too.

But viewers should be warned that time has had its way with this movie -- either it hasn't been restored, or it was in VERY bad condition to begin with. It's a bit fuzzy and crackly in places, and the sound is distinctly tinny. And when it's dark, it's very difficult to see what's going on.

"King Solomon's Mines" is a stately, well-made story that is a bit too slow to be an adventure story, but has good scenes, a taut climax, and a great performance by Robeson.

The only good movie version of this book.......2004-02-11

This is a superb film version of Rider Haggard's thrilling adventure story. The actors all perform their roles with zest and conviction, with Paul Robeson outstanding as the rightful chief of the tribe returned to claim his birthright. Best of all, the film has a satisfactorily evil and terrifying Gagool, because what is King Solomon's Mines without Gagool the Witch?She is unbelievably left out of the bland and boring Stewart Granger version. This is the only version of the film worth watching, I cannot believe another reviewer thinks that the later versions are better. He obviously wouldn't recognise a good film if he fell over it.

Poor!.......2002-05-20

As generous as I have been handing out stars, I can't recommend this movie to anyone for any reason. Taking in to account it was produced in 1937, and the limited production capabilities then, it still doesn't warrant much. Do yourself a favor, look to enjoy some of the more modern versions.

The picture quality of this video can only be described as AWFUL.
After only a few minutes viewing I trashed it. It is disgraceful that this rubbish can be sold as new when it is obviously a copy of many back generations.

Umbopa reveals himself to be the true heir to the tribal throne, having been exiled years earlier by Twala and the tribal witch, Gagool. Quartermain's only hope to gain access to the mines and the possible rescue of O'Brien is to try to help Umbopa regain his rightful place as chief.

Product Description

This is the classic story of adventure seekers in search of the lost diamond mines of King Solomon. Hired to lead a hunting expedition in deepest Africa, Allan Quartermain (Cedric Hardewicke) is persuaded by his party to join Kathy OBrien (Anna Lee) and Umbopa (Paul Robeson) to search for her father who is presumed lost and possibly dead in his quest for the fabled diamond mines. After a gruelling trek through the desert and over a mountain, they are confronted by natives who control access to King Solomons mines. Umbopa reveals that he is their deposed leader and tells the fortune seekers that if they help him overthrow the evil doers led by the witch doctor Gagool and the usurper Twala, he will help them get to the diamonds. In a savage ritual where Gagool selects victims for death with Quartermains party as the next victims, Quartermain takes advantage of a solar eclipse to perform magic which makes the natives flee. In the ensuing battle, Umbopa retakes his throne, but as Kathy finds her father amidst the diamonds, the dormant volcano upon which the mine is situated erupts forcing Quartermain and his party to flee for their lives.
