Horrendous...should have been called "Three Guys With Swords" .......2007-08-08

This movie is possibly one of the worst films I have ever seen. Having been a huge fan of both the original novel, and the 1973-4 movie versions by Richard Lester; I was shocked and disgusted that
A: Disney put their name on it, and
B: that they actually had the nerve to call it "The Three Musketeers."
Possibly my favorite/worst moment of the movie was a spot where a bunch of bravos yell "It's Porthos the pirate!" When I saw this in the theater, I distinctly heard three other people around me (besides myself) exclaim "Porthos the PIRATE???"
It's a ridiculous, puerile, pitiful dilution of both a magnificent story (Dumas' novel) and a cinematic masterpiece (Lester's films.)
If you want to see barrels of gunpowder explode, maybe you should get this movie.
If, however, you want an inspired, dramatic, funny, action-packed adventure that's beautifully filmed, try here The Complete Musketeers (The Three Musketeers / The Four Musketeers)

Eye Candy.......2007-07-17

Purists beware, this movie is absolutely nothing like the book.
It seems to be a mixture of a previous adventure mentioned briefly in the book mixed with a few of the highlights, such as the initial challenges and the grand finally. If you are looking for any sort of authentic reproduction of the book, this is not it.

For those of you looking for a light hearted romp and some Hollywood swashbuckling then you'll probably enjoy this movie. Its eye-candy cast and swashbuckling antics were clearly the priority, do not look for anything deeper plot wise. Honestly, the cast was fantastic and I wish they had done a real reproduction of the book. But as it is, this movie is just fine with me.

If you've never read the book by Alexander Dumas, The Three Musketeers is a fabulous film that you will absolutely love. Several reviewers harp on the differences between the book and movie, but the very reason for creating a movie version is that it's SUPPOSED to be different. This one is excellently filmed, directed, and of particular note are all of the amazing actors! Personally, I've been in love with Oliver Platt, one of the most underrated actors of our time, for years, and this movie is an excellent showcase for his talents. But the star is most definately Tim Curry as Cardinal Richelieu, at his most evil best. I very highly recommend this movie to ALL ages, as it is appropriate to watch with your entire family.

What WAS That?.......2007-06-08

I don't even know where to begin--the horrible acting, the terrible costuming, the obviously fake sets, the lack of continuity, or the cliched (and/or just plain stupid) lines? The "action and adventure" to which some have alluded is no more than a few people shooting each other or clashing swords while saying some really idiotic things; either that, or trying, and failing, to give the impression that they are truly courageous heroes. D'Artagnan looks and acts like a men's clothing model. The Musketeers are brainless wierdos. The king is a temper tantrum-throwing little kid. De Rochefort is obviously modifying his voice to make it more foreboding--but the fact that this is so obvious rather ruins the effect. And he looks like he should be in a gangster movie. Milady is definitely trying too hard. The red-haired doofus...I don't know where he came from. Well, that basically sums it up, folks.

This is my favorite adaptation of this Duma's classic. The outstanding ensemble of actors were superb. The granduer of the palaces and commoness of all else were well portrayed. A country boy, bedazzled by the new world he has stepped into, yet his desire to do right, along with the mentoring of the mature musketeers, enables him to grow into the hero Dumas created. He is lauded by those he saved and respected by his enemies.
Would like to see the "Return of the Musketeers" release May 30, 2000 be put on DVD.

Awesome. How can you NOT like Oliver Reed at Athos?

Sadly, it doesn't have the third movie (and therefore not really complete, but what the heck?) and I've heard that it isn't on DVD yet.

If you love this time period, this is a great buy! Remember, this is the older version, not the new lousy one with Kiefer Sutherland and those nouveau Musketeers!

I loved these movies when they came out in the theater and I loved watching them on my DVD player at home. Always funny with fantastic sword fighting - much better than most of what we see today. No CGI fight garbage, just cool and realistic fights.

In my opinion this is the best of any of "the Three Musketeers" films made I have seen.I've had the video for years and at last this Lana Turner, Gene Kelly version is on Dvd.The presence of both Turner and Kelly make this special. Turner as a great villian and Kelly with his agility plus a great supporting cast make the film watchable many times over when your in the mood for this sort of adventure.

Here is a story that has been told and re-told and re-told, but this Gene Kelly-Lana Turner version is, by far, the most fun, the most complete and certainly the most visually stunning. This is 3-strip Technicolor at its' most glorious. Kelly is a wonderfully energetic Dartagnan, and Lana Turner is a staggeringly beautiful Milady, and she plays her to perfection. Fabulous movie. We love Gene Kelly and Lana Turner (a delicious villian). The scenery is beautiful, especially filmed in technicolor, and the story is very appropriate for family viewing. Our only diappointment was that it was not released in a wide-screen version which would have enhanced the sword fights and panoramic views.

If you have never watched a Three Musketeer's movie, this one is for you! In this early adaptation of Alexander Dumas' book, the characters literally jump off the pages in the form of Gene Kelly, Vincint Price, Angela Landsbury and everyone else involved perfectly.
If you have always been a person to read a book and then be slightly to overly dissapointed during the film remake of that book. Then this movie will change your perspective on that as well. I have used this movie as my "Book" in book reports about four times. And each time the teacher was always amazed at how well I delved into the peoples actuall emotions. That's because I've seen the characters how they were meant to be.
This movie follows the book almost word for word. It's fantastic. I have yet to see another movie based on a book that is nearly as well done as this one.

Almost the best screen version.......2007-05-08

The influence of Buster Keaton on Jackie Chan's brand of comedy-action stunt work is well documented, but looking at Gene Kelly's impressively energetic stunt work in George Sidney's lavish 1948 MGM version of The Three Musketeers it's clear that his viewing extended beyond the silent era. The sheer amount of vitality and imagination that goes into the first duel with Richelieu's men is absolutely astounding: it's almost like watching a vintage live-action Tom and Jerry cartoon. Unfortunately, while he shares Douglas Fairbanks Sr.'s athleticism, he also shares his penchant for ham, particularly in the love scenes (this is the performance Kelly sends up mercilessly in Singin' in the Rain's The Duelling Cavalier), but he's never quite bad enough to throw the film of course. George Sidney, who had one of the best eyes for striking composition of any directors at MGM, makes sure it always looks good (this is from the days when Technicolor really was glorious), Herbert Stothart's rousing score carries it along with unashamed gusto (though it could have done without the Tchaikovsky for the love scenes) and there's a fine supporting cast - Van Heflin, Gig Young and Robert Coote round out the Musketeers, Angela Lansbury and Frank Morgan play the royalty, Lana Turner the femme fatale while Vincent Price provides superbly underplayed velvet villainy as Richelieu, beating Ernst Stavro Blofeld to the cat on the lap business by a good 19 years (though he opts for a tortoiseshell tabby rather than a Persian White). Great fun in a Christmas Day kind of way.

Warners' DVD is quite a treat - a fine transfer with the theatrical trailer, brief radio promo, cartoon (though sadly not the obvious choice of Tom and Jerry's The Two Mouseketeers but What Price Fleadom?) and a vintage James Fitzpatrick travelog.

One of the best Mickey Mouse Films!!!.......2007-02-23

This is a quality film, really. I am the parent of a toddler and have seen a lot of really bad films. This movie is quick, has an above-average story line, good music (lyrics set to classical music)and was a real pleasure to watch (even for the 20th time). There are a few mildly dark elements (Pete, "bad guys", swordplay, etc.)and a bit of slapstick action, but there are equally good themes of bravery, friendship and teamwork and a happy ending. I still suggest watching it with your child(ren) just to discuss it further, if needed. All in all there is nothing the average toddler can't handle. I only wish that there were more quality children's films like this...Yeah I'm talking to you, Elmo!

A great movie for Disney's Big 3.......2006-07-26

I am really glad that Disney is starting to wheel out it's classic stars again. While I do enjoy the feature films like Lion King, Tarzan, Peter Pan, etc.. I think their is nothing more "Disney" than the original stable of characters that made the Disney company the family studio.

Disney recently has come out with the "Disney Treasures collections" and several of those are the old Mickey, Donald, Goofy, and Pluto cartoons. When I watch those with my son I always end up thinking two things.
1. I wish they would display the original shorts more
&
2. I wish they would make more shorts for the classic characters.

I'm so glad that Disney has started doing that with the Once upon a Christmas series and now with "The 3 Musketeers" And I think all of these new ventures into Mickey are worth while and done excellently.

The comedy in this movie is wonderful. There is some undertone humor only the adults will get but it's not raunchy or inappropriate, and the slapstick humor is wonderful. Disney truly made an excellent movie for the family here and I hope all the Disney lovers out there or just families looking for a good movie will pick this up.

I know this in some ways, was a dangerous undertaking for Disney because Mickey is more than a character, but he really is an icon. So if you portray him in a way that the public doesn't like you can have a severe backlash, but Disney handled Mickey's latest outing with all the class Walt Disney himself would have wanted.

Also, there are a few characters in the movie that really surprised me.
1. Pete: was great! a wonderful villain all the way back to Steamboat Willie.
2. Donald: The attitude and personality of Donald has changed drastically in this movie. He's gone from the hothead to the passive coward. I found that a little unsettling; I hope that trend does not continue.
3. Clarabelle the cow: Clara was a regular in the old (and I mean Old) Disney cartoon shorts, but has been MIA for like 60 years. So to see her again was great.
4. The turtle narrator: He was a new character and was really a great storyteller, I hope he sticks around for the next Mickey movie.

I Couldn't Stop Watching It!.......2006-03-20

When I first saw this movie, I thought it was going to be so boring 'cause I only watched a little bit of it. Then I was soon reunited with the movie again and I watched it once more. I fell in love with it! This proves the power of teamwork and it even has romance in it. I love the fact that Donald and Goofy came back for Mickey. And I also found it adorable, when, this is going to sound stupid, when Donald and Mickey hugged and he said to him that he knew that he would come back. Anyway, another thing I like is the humor in this like when Pete was teasing Mickey with a little bit of the Mickey Mouse Club March song and also when Mickey says "We'll save the princess, even if we die trying" and Donald says "Die?" This movie is just too glorious, and one day, I shall have it and I will watch it till I turn 100.

Best Thing Disney's Done (Without Pixar) For Quite a While!.......2005-12-16

Once upon a time, Disney was one of the best animation companies ever, putting out stuff like The Little Mermaid and The Lion King and Aladdin. Now, Disney has mainly turned to two things:

1. Sequels that aren't worth seeing
2. Original works that aren't worth seeing

Fortunately, The Three Musketeers doesn't fall into either of these categories. It's an original, funny, cute movie that doesn't run too long to hold a kid's interest. (It's barely over an hour.)

Captain Pete, leader of the musketeers, has a secret plan -- a plan to kidnap Princess Minnie with the "help" of the Beagle Boys, and become king of all France. However, Minnie soon becomes suspicious that something's going on, and demands bodyguards. Captain Pete hires Micky, Donald, and Goofy, three janitors who have long dreamed of being musketeers. He's sure that they will never be able to stop him!

Little does he know....

This movie is definitely better done than most of the stuff Disney's putting out now. Although a few parts are predictable (Mickey and Minnie will fall in love, the musketeers will win, etc.), there are several funny sight gags, plays on words, great songs, and inside jokes (At one point, Pete quotes part of the theme song to the Mickey Mouse Club - my mom had to explain that one to me) that more than make up for that.

Things I Loved:
*The message of teamwork
*The running joke about not being able to understand a thing Donald was saying
*The way Mickey and Donald were wearing their regular clothes under their musketeer suits
*Pete's helpers, the Beagle Boys. They -- especially the smallest one -- were hysterical!!

Anyway, if you want to watch a recent Disney film, this is the one to see.

Awful. Awful. Awful........2005-08-10

I was shocked to read the many wonderful reviews here. Being a fan of most things Disney, I picked this one up locally a few months ago. Me and my preteen daughter sat down to watch it, and gave up before ever finishing viewing it. The script is dull. The songs, while based on 'classic' melodies, are amateurish. (What happened to all the wonderful songs that graced the 1990's Disney films?) Even the characters voices bear no resemblence to the ones we are familiar with. (Yes, I'm aware that the actors doing the voices during the 30's through 50's have long since died. But surely a company with the funds Disney has could find voice talent that could do at least a passable facsimile.
Disney should be ashamed of putting their name on this yawner.

The great movie tradition of adapting high-toned novels into star-studded vehicles gets an airing in Warner DVD's Literary Classics Collection, a group of six such pictures. It's a grab bag, but some of this stuff is unmissable. The best film in the box might be the 1937 version of The Prisoner of Zenda, Anthony Hope's buckle-swashing tale of a commoner (Ronald Colman) impersonating a lookalike king. This David Selznick production is one of those sparkling examples of the Hollywood heyday of the thirties, in which every cylinder is firing at full speed: buoyant script, luscious black-and-white photography (by the great James Wong Howe), exuberant swordplay, wonderful villainy (take a bow, Douglas Fairbanks Jr., and Raymond Massey), and a lovely damsel (Madeleine Carroll). John Cromwell directed, although others chimed in. As an adventure picture, it's just about flawless. On the flip side of the disc, the 1952 remake sticks closely to the original--and the formula still works, although the zest isn't quite there. Stewart Granger steps into Colman's shoes, with Deborah Kerr and James Mason in support.

The 1948 version of The Three Musketeers is one of the lesser versions of that swashbuckler; Gene Kelly and Lana Turner leads the cast in a Technicolor-iffic but dramatically underwhelming effort. Raoul Walsh's Captain Horatio Hornblower (1950) delivers thoughtful seagoing strategies, as the British captain navigating gunships and political winds. The movie doesn't have the oomph of the usual Walsh action film, perhaps keyed instead to Gregory Peck's serious presence, but it has a gratifyingly intelligent forward motion. Plus, the Hornblower disc comes with "Captain Hareblower," a Warners cartoon with Bugs Bunny battling Yosemite Sam on the high seas.

The shipboard morality play of Melville's Billy Budd is included here, in the classic 1962 adaptation by director Peter Ustinov (who also plays Captain Vere). Terence Stamp, in his film debut, is the innocent sailor Billy, and Robert Ryan etches one of the all-time portrayals of cold-eyed cruelty as the brutal master-at-arms Claggart. A great conversation piece in the era of the repertory house, the film holds up--and a commentary track with Stamp and Steven Soderbergh provides good stuff on the actor's career start.

The 1949 M-G-M production of Madame Bovary might not please Flaubert purists, but it will impress auteurist fans of Vincente Minnelli. The tale of a wayward small-town wife is infused with Minnelli's swooning grasp of camera movement and décor, and a showpiece ballroom sequence out-duels any Max Ophuls film for swirling dance delirium. Jennifer Jones' alien presence might be a problem for modern viewers, yet her strangeness actually fits the character. This might just be the discovery of the set, which is otherwise filled out with a satisfying batch of vintage cartoons and short subjects. --Robert Horton

Billy Budd.......2007-08-07

I'll try to keep it short, I've waited years to track down a copy of this movie. (Thank you, Amazon, if that is not inappropriate).
The movie is "great" "superb" not lost in time. If you like old fashioned entertainment and action, done with integrity. Peter Ustinov as Producer/Director and a leading role, sympathetic, yet having to abide by sea laws, Robert Ryan as a mongrel, Terrence Stamp in yes, his first role, "the collector" came after, and a young "Aussie" John Meillon. Innocent charm, naivety and brutality in one film. I consider this a classic. But who am I to judge? Just a lover of a good film and escapeism.

Surprised at lack of quality.......2007-06-22

I purchased this set mainly for the wonderful 1937 version of "The Prisoner of Zenda." I watched that film first, and was surprised at the lack of quality there. The film does not look to be restored. The picture has a "grainy" look to it. At one point, there are several "scratch" lines running from the top to the bottom of the screen for several frames. The most disappointing flaw, however, occurs near the beginning of the movie: the soundtrack is out of sync with the picture. You see the mouths of the actors move, and there is a split-second delay before you hear the voice. This is most annoying. I have collected many box sets from Warners, and indeed, this company has been my favorite source for the classics. However, their quality does vary from one picture to another (I was very disapointed with "Brigadoon" also -- very poor picture quality). I understand that it takes time and money to restore these pictures, but it also COSTS money to add them to a classic movie collection. If a movie is worth preserving, then it's worth restoring to a near-new quality before producing the DVDs for sale. I realize that we can't have the restoration quality of "The Wizard of Oz" on every product, but for cryin' out loud, can't we at least get a copy of a print with synchronized sound?

I waited with earnest anticipation for these films to be released. And finally my wish was granted what wondeful and delightful memorys came flooding back to me. How I remember waking early to view these films on The Prize Morning Movie, and how constantly I looked to see if these fims had been released to DVD's, and then suddenly they where all released in One Box Set. I was moved with such joy, I could not wait to view these wonderful restored colored and every thing else they do to restore these films I watched them all in one weekend, I had my own home revival of classic films with popcorn and friends, it was wonderful!!!

This Definite Literary Classic Collection is great and a great addition to one's collection. My favorite was the 1937 version of The Prisoner of Zenda.

DVD of Horatio Hornblower... GREAT!!!.......2007-03-26

My VHS copy of Horation Hornblower was showing signs of age. I had looked for a DVD copy for three years. When I saw this collection--I bought it for that one movie, but I love Billy Bud, and it's great that it has a commentary. I wish Horatio had one also.

Darryl Zanuck does to The Three Musketeers what Mr. Joyboy does to the loved ones at Whispering Glades Mortuary. They sure look well groomed and well cared for, but I wouldn't want to embrace them enthusiastically. They're just a little...well, stiff. The story goes that Zanuck in 1939 thought the time was right for a movie full of laughs, slapstick and songs, all done on the cheap but looking good. What else could have come to Zanuck's mind than Dumas' The Three Musketeers, especially since there were no rights to pay for. There's still the skeleton of the story. The Queen of France (Gloria Stuart) has given an emerald brooch to the Duke of Buckingham as a remembrance token. Cardinal Richelieu (Miles Mander) discovers this and sets up a nasty surprise for her which will ensure his power over the King. But that young man from Gascony who is eager to become a King's Musketeer, D'Artagnan (Don Ameche), learns of the plot while falling in love with one of the Queen's attendants, Lady Constance (Pauline Moore). He enlists the three Musketeers he was going to duel with and off they go to retrieve the brooch, save the Queen, foil the Cardinal's plan and frustrate the Cardinal's beautiful agent, Lady de Winter (Binnie Barnes).

However, the real three musketeers are given about three minutes of screen time. Taking their place in mistaken identity are three lackeys...the Ritz Brothers. Although Don Ameche makes a likable enough fighting and singing D'Artagnan, this Three Musketeers lives or dies on how funny you think the Ritz Brothers are. They were big stuff in the Thirties, but faded fast in the early Forties. They were loud, anarchic and could do some fine precision dancing. In this film, their stomping routine with metal plates strapped fore and aft is first rate. Since the movie only lasts about 72 minutes, there's a lot of the Ritz Brothers.

Ameche is assured, pleasant and, as he was throughout most of his career, bland. He was a popular leading man in the Thirties and Forties, but never quite found a firm grasp on top stardom. Everyone liked him, he went home at 5 p.m. to his wife and kids, didn't drink and he always knew his lines. By the time the Fifties were underway he was doing a lot of television and had a success on Broadway as the lead in Cole Porter's Silk Stockings. He was largely forgotten until, improbably, he hit stardom in the movies one more time. With Trading Places in 1983, Cocoon in 1985 and Things Change in 1988, Ameche, now as an older star character actor, was on top again. He stayed there until his death in 1993 at age 85. It's a nice story.

Ameche is both blessed and cursed in the movie. He's blessed because he has a chance to show what a skilled singer he is, from the Musketeers' march to an odd traveling song to his declaration of love for Lady Constance. He's cursed because these are some of the most mundane songs imaginable. Here's Ameche singing with his head through a hole in a wooden door to Constance:

And if my song could make you say you love me,
Then heaven would be bright above me.
With words and music straight from my heart,
My song would tell my love for you, my lady.

While he's singing this song, Pauline Moore as Constance looks as if d'Artagnan must have had too much garlic on his escargots. It's an awkwardly acted and staged scene.

But here's a toast to Lady de Winter, a spy to die for. And she'll help you. de Winter is one of the great characters in the book and she usually steals the scenes she has in the many movie versions. Lana Turner and Faye Dunaway were memorably murderous and stunningly beautiful as Milady. With Lady de Winter's fondness for causing others to die and with her cool delight in using men's lust to achieve her ends, one can only assume that she never had enough love as a child. Binnie Barnes plays her and does a great job. Barnes is blond and beautiful, and her de Winter would just as soon skewer D'Artagnan as make love to him. Binnie Barnes said once, "I'm no Sarah Bernhardt. One picture is just like another to me as long as I don't have to be a sweet woman."

How well you enjoy this movie probably depends on how well you enjoy the Ritz Brothers. The movie is dated, the humor is broad, the songs aren't very good. Still, The Three Musketeers has a lot of good natured charm. The DVD transfer is just fine. There are a couple of inconsequential and very short extras that feature the brothers.

Another great version of "The Three Musketeers" that you have never heard of is "At Sword's Point- 1952" with Alan Hale Jr., Cornell Wilde, and Maureen O'Hara.

This is really a spoof of The Three Musketeers.The Ritz Brothers are not my cup of tea.This version only follows the first half of the novel.The Ritz Brothers played lackeys.Douglas Dumbrille,Russell Hicks and John King played the Athos,Porthos and Aramis.Don Ameche did a good job as D'Artagnan.Binnie Barnes,Lionel Atwill and Miles Mander excellent in their parts Milady,Rochefort and Cardinal Richelieu.Gloria Stuart,Joseph Schildkraut,Lester Matthews ,Pauline Moore,John Carradine good in their supporting roles as Queen Anne,King Louis,Constance and Naveau Bernajoux the Cardinal's spy.Is this a faithful adaptation? No,but a good one.Alot of this version was copied from the 1935 version.The D'Artagnan abduction scene an example.Note to those who love this version Miles Mander who played Cardinal Richelieu in this version played King Louis in the more serious 1935 version.The Musketeers in this version like the 1935 were getting a little long in the tooth but the performances were good.If you really enjoyed this comical take on the classic then you would probably like the Disney 1993 version (which copied from the 1935 and 1939 versions) and two Mexican versions one with Cantinflas 1942 (not dubbed in English) and Tin Tan's 1957 version which plays on the Nostalgia Channel and is dubbed in English.The funny thing about Tin Tan's version is the costumery looks just like that of the 1948 Gene Kelly version and Milady de Winter looks like a redheaded Janet Leigh.So if you like spoofs of classics you will like this.

Compared with some of the grandiose technicolored widescreen versions pf "The Three Musketeers" this 1966 black and white production looks cramped and primitive, but it has virtues of its own: the acting is of excellent quality throughout the cast and the personalities of the musketeers are more sharply defined. What is wryly amusing is that even in the DVD version, Jeremy Brett gets only second billing; his name does not even appear on the front cover of the box! Yet even in this youthful appearance the sensitivity and emotional range of this gifted actor are apparent. For his prtformance alone this set would be worth buying.

In 1966, BBC unveiled The Three Musketeers, a television mini-series shown in 10 black & white episodes, each about 24 minutes long. This full-screen dvd release is certainly worth a look for all swashbuckler fans and, specifically, for readers of Alexandre Dumas. I'm not sure how many film adaptations there are out there about the Musketeers. Off the cuff, the versions I remember starred Douglas Fairbanks, Don Ameche (a musical!), Gene Kelly, Michael York (excellent!), and Charlie Sheen. There was even a crappy version a few years ago wherein D'Artagnan's fighting style combined elements of gymnastics and martial arts!

This BBC mini-series sticks pretty closely to Dumas's classic tale of love, honor, and swordplay. In ten chapters, we get to witness the high points of the book: our young Gascon, D'Artagnan, on his way to meet M. Treville in hopes of becoming a Musketeer, initially ruffling the feathers of Athos, Porthos, and Aramis, and consequently scheduling dueling appointments with them on three successive hours; D'Artagnan meeting and falling in love with Constance, the lovely but married seamstress and confidante of the Queen, who, unwisely but very Frenchlike, engages in secret liaisons with the Duke of Buckingham; D'Artagnan's heroic mission for his queen and his friends' noble sacrifices along the way so that D'Artagnan's mission is successful. And so on...

The cast is comprised of outstanding British actors. Athos, Porthos, and Aramis are respectively and vigorously played by Jeremy Young, Brian Blessed, and Gary Watson, who are all very, very good and passionate in their roles - in particular, Jeremy Young, whose tortured character has always stood out in my eyes. Unfortunately, Constance remains a tepid character, much like in the book. The villains are done a good turn by the wickedly good performances of Mary Peach, as the cunning and vindictive Milady de Winter, and of Richard Pasco, who plays Cardinal Richelieu with icy reserve and Machiavellian menace.

But, most of all, we get to experience a D'Artagnan who is disarmingly portrayed by Jeremy Brett. D'Artagnan, in Brett's hands, is earnest, noble, spiritedly idealistic, and fiercely brave. This is a very fine performance by Mr. Brett, who displays the intensity and class arrogance he would later hone to perfection as Sherlock Holmes. But, back in 1966, he was young enough (33 years old then) that he was able to bring zest and youthful energy into his iconic role. When his father advises him to "never fear quarrels, but seek adventures" and to "fight on all occasions," we know Brett is up to the challenge.

Showcasing ferocious, energetic sword fights, ensemble acting done with panache and conviction, and a sincere commitment to do right by Dumas's greatest work, BBC's The Three Musketeers is an honest and true adaptation. With a budget commensurate to television, the production is modest but, nevertheless, admirable. The costumes, the settings, the texturing of the show are all exceedingly done well. No, it doesn't have the tongue in cheek flavor of the 1974 Richard Lester version or the Brat Pack casting of the 1993 offering. What it has, instead, is unassuming charm and loyalty to the spirit of Alexandre Dumas. Of all the Musketeer films I've seen, this one most closely resembles, believe it or not, the 1948 Gene Kelly film in its earnestness.

This series comes in 2 discs, with 5 episodes per disc. Here's the bad news: there are no special features included here. No behind the scenes featurette, no episode commentaries...nothing, nada, zipzoid. Which is why I'm rating the dvd as a four-and-a-half starrer, instead of the full five marks.

A year later, in 1967, BBC treated its audience to a follow up 16-episode serial, The Further Adventures of the Three Musketeers, which showcased Joss Ackland as D'Artagnan. Hopefully, there's a dvd about it in the near future, and with special features.

For anyone that is a true fan in John Wayne, (this is a series that I didn't know about) this goes back to when Wayne first got into short films. The audible portion of course is not the best, and it was shot with prehistoric equipment. But if you are interested in Waynes history, this is a must see.
