Mel Brooks scored his first commercial hit with this raucous Western spoof starring the late Cleavon Little as the newly hired (and conspicuously black) sheriff of Rock Ridge. Sheriff Bart teams up with deputy Jim (Gene Wilder) to foil the railroad-building scheme of the nefarious Hedley Lamarr (Harvey Korman). The simple plot is just an excuse for a steady stream of gags, many of them unabashedly tasteless, that Brooks and his wacky cast pull off with side-splitting success. The humor is so juvenile and crude that you just have to surrender to it; highlights abound, from the lunkheaded Alex Karras as the ox-riding Mongo to Madeline Kahn's uproarious send-up of Marlene Dietrich as saloon songstress Lili Von Shtupp. Adding to the comedic excess is the infamous campfire scene involving a bunch of hungry cowboys, heaping servings of baked beans and, well, you get the idea. --Jeff Shannon

Once Mel Brooks' lunatic film many call his best gets started, logic is lost in a blizzard of gags, jokes, quips, puns, howlers, growlers and outrageous assaults upon good taste or any taste at all. Cleavon Little as the new lawman, Gene Wilder as the wacko Waco Kid, Brooks himself as a dim-witted politico and Madeline Kahn in her Marlene Dietrich send-up that earned an Academy Award nomination all give this sagebrush saga their lunatic best. And when Blazing Saddles can't contain itself at the finale, it just proves the Old West will never be the same!

I think I've become Cleavon Little's number one fan. He and Gene Wilder are as funny as ever in this classic... good humor never stops making you laugh and it is especially true in this case.

This movie is a comedy classic! I love how Mel Brooks makes an hysterical mockery of the Wild West. His role as an equally corrupt and incompetent governor, under the sway of Harvey Korman's Attorney General is hilarious. Also, the whole business with Rock Ridge is a side splitter, with Cleavon Little and Gene Wilder, posing as social outcasts, end up winning over the hostile locals and shutting down the corrupt designs of Korman's character (Headly "Heddy" Lamar). Many other great scenes are found throughout the movie. A must for all fans of "intelligent comedy." Unfortunately, this movie is so non-PC that it will most likely never be re-released in theaters.

I dont know why but I cant get enough of this movie. The humour is really funny and there are so many scenes I enjoy, but none I can type down. If you enjoy comedy, then this movie is for you.

Classic 60's Television Series Finally Available On DVD.......2007-08-24

This great series is finally available on DVD collections by seasons. "The Wild, Wild West" was one of the last successful Western television shows, coming on right as the era of the great Western TV show was coming to an end.

Its success was due to the fact that not only was it exciting and action-packed, but it was a curious meld of traditional Western action, espionage, science fiction, and high camp. It was in equal parts a product of its time as a Western, such as "Gunsmoke" and "Bonanza," a semi-serious, lots of camp spy show like "I-Spy," "The Man From UNCLE," and "The Avengers," science fiction like "Star Trek" and "Voyage To The Bottom of the Sea," and sophomoric camp like "Batman." Robert Conrad and Ross Martin made a formidable team as US Secret Service agents James West and Artemis Gordon, as they travelled all over the West in their personal locomotive thwarting the schemes and intrigues of power-mad scientists and ruthless governments.

This show is near and dear to a lot of us who grew up in the mid to late 60's, and it is a joy to watch these episodes and remember that while the world was not a simple, carefree place, our living rooms could be while watching shows like "The Wild, Wild West."

Released almost exactly 11 years after Clint Eastwood's Unforgiven, Kevin Costner's Open Range proved yet again that the Western is the classic American genre. While it lacks the thematic impact of Eastwood's masterpiece, Costner's first film since 1997's ill-fated The Postman returns the actor/director of Dances With Wolves to the open prairies of America--in this case the free-range frontier of 1882--where legal "free-grazing" cattle drives were falling prey to empire-building land-owners. Western movies have not been too popular in recent years, but it's good to see that some westerns are still being made for mature audiences. This is one of them. Some of the individual elements of the movie seem to be taken from other stories, but they are recombined to make an exciting new tale of the old west.

A beautiful and classic Western........2007-08-20

Rules of thumb are dangerous when it comes to movies, but the following one has never, to my knowledge, been disproven: Any movie that features Robert Duvall in a cowboy hat is likely to be a classic. That rule was certainly true of "Tender Mercies" and "Lonesome Dove," and in my opinion it's also true of "Open Range," the 2003 film that proved "Dances With Wolves" wasn't just a fluke for Kevin Costner. Costner directed this moving, atmospheric Western in which he co-stars with Duvall and Annette Bening. (Touchingly and appropriately, Costner gave Duvall top billing in this film.) In "Open Range," Duvall and Costner play Boss Spearman and Charlie Waite, two saddle tramps leading a herd of cattle to market with the help of Mose (Abraham Benrubi), a hulking giant of a man, and Button (Diego Luna), a semi-feral Mexican teenager. Unfortunately, the four inadvertently run afoul of evil rancher Denton Baxter (Michael Gambon) and corrupt Sheriff Poole (James Russo), both of whom consider it their duty on earth to kill all cowboys who follow the open range. But for Charlie this misfortune has a silver lining, because it brings him into contact with the beautiful Sue (Bening). Essentially the film is a three-character chamber drama between Duvall, Costner and Bening, though it contains enough excitement and color for three Westerns. All three give performances equal to the best they've ever given. The relationship between Charlie--a former soldier and gunslinger who strives to bury his more murderous instincts--and Boss, who generally advises caution but can turn dangerous when he has to, is as rich and enjoyable as that between Gus McCrae and Woodrow Call in "Lonesome Dove." Duvall's Boss can't help but put us in mind of Gus, except that Boss is more likely than Gus to think before he acts, to his ultimate benefit. The slow, halting courtship between Charlie and Sue is deeply moving; Charlie loves Sue more than any woman he's ever met, but feels unworthy of her kindness and gentility. These relationships play out against a backdrop of the murderous doings of Baxter and Poole, culminating in a long gunfight that, in its sense of chaotic danger, feels closer to the truth than any gunfight Randolph Scott ever appeared in. Sweet-souled yet breathtakingly exciting, with magnificent photography by James Muro and haunting music by Michael Kamen, "Open Range" is a true classic Western.

Just an excellent film.......2007-08-10

I love westerns, but even if you don't, this storyline translates well on its own. The film is well acted (both Costner and Duvall are excellent) with great cinematography. It is the kind of film that makes you yearn for the old days when people lived by the strength of their word and trust (perhaps just a Hollywood created notion, but I still like to think that we all try to strive for such a thing).

Many people buy this and Broken Trail, but by far this is the better one. Of course Broken Trail was a made for TV movie and as such was shot like it was a made for TV movie. The one saving grace of that movie was Duvall and Church (I have liked him since he first appeared in Wings, I think it is his voice and unusual speech pattern that is interesting to me).

Too long, but ultimately worthwhile..........2007-07-28

"Open Range" could have benefitted by one more film editing task, cutting it by perhaps 20 minutes. If you have the patience, however, the final rewards are many. The performances are uniformly good, with Costner, Duvall and Bening excellent as usual, and many fine supporting actor contributions, including Michael Gambon as the bad guy (Dumbledore in the Harry Potter series!)and Michael Jeter as a helpful townsman. It is fascinating to compare Costner's grizzled, disillusioned Civil War veteran here to the sparkling gunfighter he portrayed as a young man in "Silverado." The cinematography is glorious in this one, but the script wasn't quite tight enough to make this a masterpiece. The climax, however, is one of the best wild West gunfights I've ever seen, and at age 62, I've seen scores of them on screen. Give this movie's first 40 minutes the benefit of the doubt, and the final 100 minutes will reward you. As a bonus, Duvall rips off half-a-dozen hilarious lines, and a dozen wise ones, winning your heart and mind as an old cowhand who has learned life's lessons well.

Whether you grew up with it on the tube, want to erase the memory of 1999's disappointing feature-film adaptation, or are simply discovering it now, The Wild Wild West rocks. It's all very tongue-in-cheek; the villains, both familiar (Doctor Miguelito Loveless, colorfully portrayed by "little person" Michael Dunn) and new, are deluded, silver-tongued maniacs camping it up like there's no tomorrow, while the stories, ranging from Loveless' schemes to take over the world and various plots to eliminate President Ulysses S. Grant and other important personages to time travel and green-skinned women from Venus, are smart, whimsical, and clever.

The show's overall vibe, from the opening credits on, is obviously reminiscent of cartoons and comic books; the fact that it doesn't take itself at all seriously is arguably its most appealing feature, along with better-than-average sets, cinematography, and other technical elements (not to mention a great title tune by Morton Stevens, the same guy responsible for Hawaii Five-0's immortal theme). Inevitably, some of it seems a bit dated now, such as the stereotypical depictions of Indians, but overall, The Wild Wild West has held up well. If there's a principal drawback, it's the lack of any bonus features; even though creator Michael Garrison died before this second season hit the airwaves, it would have been nice to hear from some of the others who participated in the making of this terrific show. --Sam Graham

I am so pleased that the second series of "Wild Wild West" is available. This is an incredibly inventive and exciting sci-fi western series originating from the 1960's. The series is witty, sharp and action packed and features two engaging stars as well as guest starring a whole range of quality actors and actresses quite often playing power crazy geniuses out to rule the world.

One of the best TV series of the last 40 years! Reviewers should not compare this series directly with the Will Smith remake. Personally I found them both engaging in their own way but to my mind the original was best. You are getting 8 hours worth of solid entertainment here.

This was a great collection from the 60's to see. The colors are absolutely vivid since back in the 60's color televison did not have the brilliance they do now. It seems like the director took this in account and really over colored or textured the costumes and sets. I had never seen at least half of these episodes.

It's a great pleasure to watch again Jim and Artie battle super villains in those inspired, quirky, irreverent and above all creative shows of the 60's ! Image & sound quality are tops. So is this 2nd season of JAMES WEST - a top season of a top show. Great fun !

CBS had an instant hit on their hands when The Wild Wild West made its network debut on September 17, 1965. While many of the popular TV Westerns were running out of steam, series creator Michael Garrison ripped a page from the Ian Fleming/Sean Connery playbook and conceived The Wild Wild West as a "James Bond Western," energizing the genre by combining a traditional Western setting (primarily the San Francisco region in the 1870s) with the accoutrements of the spy genre. It was a foolproof formula, further refined by producer Fred Frieberger (who later produced the third and final season of Star Trek), and TWWW held its popular time-slot (7:30-8:30 on Friday nights) for its entire four-season run. Smart casting proved to be another source of audience appeal: While Robert Conrad fit nicely into his role (and tight-fitting costume) as macho Secret Service agent James West, doing his own challenging stunts and charming each episode's obligatory beautiful female guest star, Ross Martin proved an equally excellent choice to play West's skillful sidekick Artemus Gordon, a debonair dandy whose mastery of disguises and dialects would prove essential as they tackled dangerous crime-fighting assignments from President Ulysses S. Grant.

The series' unique appeal arose from its clever and frequently bizarre plots. Every episode title began with a variation of "The Night of..." (including the pilot, "The Night of the Inferno," with more unusual titles thereafter), and as Jim and Arte plotted strategies from the comfort of their tricked-out custom railroad car, their exploits frequently led them into realms of the occult, mad science, bizarre inventions, and villains so eccentrically twisted that they became instant favorites among the show's growing legion of fans. Best of them all was the nefarious Miguelito Loveless, first appearing in "The Night the Wizard Shook the Earth" (original airdate 10/01/65) and played to perfection by dwarf actor Michael Dunn, a '60s TV regular familiar to Star Trek fans from his memorable role in the original series episode "Plato's Stepchildren." A gifted, intellectual renaissance man (like Ross Martin) with an angelic singing voice, Dunn was an overnight sensation, guest-starring in four of the first season's 28 episodes, with six more appearances in subsequent seasons. For this much-anticipated DVD release, Paramount has made above-average efforts to satisfy fans. Virtually every episode looks and sounds practically brand-new, and with TWWW expert Sue Kesler serving as DVD co-producer, this seven-disc set features a wealth of archival extras, many culled from Kesler's own research as author of the out-of-print guidebook The Wild Wild West: The Series. In addition to excerpts from audio-taped interviews with Frieberger, writer (and "Dr. Loveless" creator) John Kneubuhl (who tells a fascinating story of how Liberace almost guest-starred on the show), music composer Richard Markowitz, and special-effects technician Tim Smyth, each episode includes brief but informative audio introductions by Robert Conrad, who also appears (with Martin) discussing the show (and their subsequent TV-movie revival of TWWW) in a 1978 talk-show appearance. Excerpts from the original music-theme scoring sessions were found in UCLA's Film and Television archive, and other extras include a network series promo clip (from a later season, after TWWW switched to color), a sketch by Ross Martin, a photo gallery, and even one of Conrad's notorious Eveready Battery commercials from the late '70s. I just loved the first season of the Wild Wild West. The extras were great. I especially loved the promos. This just made me fall in love more with the show. I can hardly wait to get all the seasons.

There is something a little juvenile about the Wild Wild West, but I have to admit that I really have enjoyed these DVDs. I have both seasons 1 and 2; both are excellently restored. For both, video and audio quality is excellent. I had forgotten what a great job the 60s tv shows did with music, which really adds to the atmosphere of the show. I prefer Season One. To me, the black and white presentation has a classic look that holds up much better than the coloredition . It seems that a lot of the early color tv shows overdid the color in costumes and set designs. Some of the color episodes have a Batman and Robin look to them. Season one also has some of the best story lines. The stories that I remembered when I first saw the show as kid seemed to come from Season One.

The Wild Wild BAD!.......2007-06-15

The show was good in the 70's but it's not good based on current TV shows' standard. The settings look fake. The acting is so so. The show is in Black and White. I found most of the outdoor scenes looked exactly like they're filmed indoors. It's so boring that I did not finish watching disk 1 of this set.

"Quigley down under" and "The good, the bad and the ugly" are still the best Western movies of all time.

When I received the first season DVD I played it on my laptop computer. I was blown away by the clarity and the quality of the DVD. Considering that this was digitalized from 40 year old film I was amazed. I grew up watching The Wild Wild West in the 1960's and love Ross Martin's portrayal of Artemus Gordon. The world lost a great actor when he passed away but if he could see these DVD's I think he would say with a big smile "James by boy, this is a great DVD." And of course who could forget
Robert Conrad's Jim West. Now you can see all of those fight scenes in greater detail. I also have season two. The B&W is great but the color episodes are fantastic. I can't wait for season 3 & 4. Katheryn, Ohio

Director Lawrence Kasdan (The Big Chill) clearly set out to make an old-fashioned Western, but he couldn't help bringing a hip, self-conscious attitude to the proceedings. Silverado thus finds its own funky tone--sometimes rousing, sometimes winking. Four cowpokes converge on a little Western burg called Silverado; they're played by Kevin Kline (a distinctly modern kind of Western hero), Scott Glenn, Danny Glover, and the rowdy young Kevin Costner. Kasdan peppers the somewhat generic action with smart dialogue and a parade of quirky supporting players, including John Cleese as a sheriff who seems to have stepped straight from a Monty Python sketch into an Old West saloon. Bruce Broughton supplies the music, a real throwback to the glory days of thundering Western themes. One thing's for sure: Silverado's a lot more fun than the later Kasdan-Costner Western, Wyatt Earp. --Robert Horton

Little originality indeed.......2007-09-06

A good western, and yet. For one it is slightly too slow at times. That makes the film a little bit lengthy and that is not good in a western that must have a constant rhythm and when it slows down it is to create suspense in a situation that requires it. Here we have slow scenes that are not in anyway suspenseful. The second reason is that this film has little originality. It is a clear assemblage or patchwork of many references and borrowings from all the previous westerns ever made. And it is very difficult to invent anything in 1985 after also the Morricone and Clint Eastwood films, not to speak of the black and white TV series mile Dead or Alive. It is entertaining because of the way things are assembled and that is nearly all. Two elements create some perspective. First the presence of black settlers that reveal the strong racist trend in the West. Then the character of Stella, a midget saloon manageress. But apart from these two elements the rest is pretty standard. But I must admit the setting, the scenery is particularly beautiful. Some of the mountain and desert scenes are in gorgeous natural surroundings. Then the theme of the rotten sheriff (two in the film mind you, one rotten by authority and the other rotten by the local rancher) and the theme of the rancher who decides to push away, and kill if necessary, the farmers are very ordinary and common place, and once again nothing new is really added to the theme. All these borrowing, even in 1985, make the film systematically anaphoric and that is a shortcoming. Even the street duel is banal: check in Back to the Future III, the "character" of Clint Eastwood makes that anaphoric reference a lot more creative. Not here.

Worth many looks.......2007-05-14

Having grow up in the 40's & 50's, I love a good western. (even some bad ones)
But "Silverado" is right up there with the good ones.
Great cast, interesting storyline and the necessary good triumphs over evil ending.
Brian Dennehy is the perfect villain, while Kevin Kline the unexpected hero.
The rest of the cast including Scott Glenn, Kevin Costner and Jeff Goldblum keep this film moving. Never a dull moment!
Love watching it as I do many other horse operas.

This is a terrific movie and is highly recommended. But Amazon advertises this product as "new" and it IS NOT. The DVD with the movie was scratched, and damaged, causing skips and gaps. Amazon does not allow ordinary feedback and has REFUSED to exchange or refund.

A Very Exciting Western, With A Great Cast.......2007-01-31

This was a great Western. Very creative and adventerous, and a wonderful cast. Where else would you see a Monty Python alum as a sheriff in a Western?

This movie featured three of my favorite actors: Scott Glenn, Brian Dennehy, and Jeff Goldblum. It also featured one of my favorite actresses, Rosanna Arquette, though she had such a small role even the worst actress couldn't mess that role up. Kevin Costner had a youthful exhuberance that I hadn't seen since from him. And I'm just mentioning my favorites.

I'll stop before I spoil any surprises. If you want a classic western, this is one.

A FAR Better Movie Than I Expected!.......2007-08-27

Oklahoma! (I didn't forget the exclamation point in the title) is a great musical and a great movie. Not wimpy or silly in the slightest, this Rodgers and Hammerstein story rocks! From good music and strong characters and performances, to a setting that carries the gaze out toward the all-but endless sky, to one of the most delightfully macabre and humorous tunes ever penned, the "Pore Jud Is Daid" piece used in the scene in which the hero, Curley, tries to talk the villainous Jud Frye into suicide by invoking images of the lovely funeral he'd have...that had me rolling. Oklahoma! is a darn good old-fashioned sort of production, and I bet it'll pleasantly surprise a lot of first-time viewers as much as it did me.

I am watching most of the Rodger's and Hammerstein musicals for the first time and I started with "The King And I" which I really liked. "Oklahoma" was my second choice and I didn't like it as much. I hate to say it,but there was too much singing in this movie! I know it is a musical,but it seemed like a minute didn't go by without someone bursting into song. I also didn't think most of the songs were all that great! It was nice to see a young Shirley Jones in this beautiful looking film, but it just wasn't for me. If you are a fan I think this 50th anniversay edition is an excellent value with a very good transfer and many extras.

These songs were instant hits from the time the show first appeared. I was around in that era, and I remember them well. They still work, in spite of being old-fashioned. The story, however, although I didn't think anything of it at the time, now strikes me as distinctly weird. There is a strangely sinister undercurrent being played out behind the front line, and it seems to be: If you don't fit in with the rest of us, like if you're a pedlar or a hired hand, get lost. In fact, we'll help you on your way, and may even try to persuade you to hang yourself. Is this the recommended tactic for a straight-shooting ideal cowboy? The dream, or substance-induced nightmare, dance sequence is very strange, and someone else has commented on the way it doesn't match the rest of the presentation. It seems to be dredged up from some suppressed vision of darkness, perhaps faintly similar to the hidden side of wholesome America in Lynch's Blue Velvet. Very curious. The music and lyrics are highly memorable. Wotcha gonna do if a fella gets flirty --- spit in his eye? It's a pity Jud won't keep, but it's summer, and we're runnin' outta ice.

Though the film is long and contains a fairly high corn factor, it's also visually stunning, and truly soars whenever the music and dancing starts, with peerless renditions of "People Will Say We're In Love," "The Surrey With The Fringe On The Top," and the immortal title tune. The dance numbers, choreographed by Agnes de Mille, are original and exuberant, while Steiger and Gloria Grahame turn in fine performances, respectively playing the dastardly Jud and the naively amorous Ado Annie, "the girl who can't say no."

Monte Walsh.......2007-07-30

I enjoy watching Monte Walsh for the feelings it holds for the last days of the old time cowboy, and what that era might have been like. the movie has it's tender moments too, dealing with the gentle love affair between the main character and a charming but sad 'soiled dove' according to the Old West usage, which is kinder than our term "hooker," played by the daughter of Ingrid Bermann.

The movie is not helped by the gunfight at the end; I felt it was unnecessary when I first watched it, and still do. I do like watching the movie though, which is as much as I need say. Go watch Monte Walsh for yourself and see if I am right.

Moving tribute to the real cowboys........2007-02-25

This is not a shoot-em-up Western. If that is what you are after, stop reading right here. What this is, is a real heartfelt tribute to the cowboy. The genuine article cowboy. In particular, it charts a group of cowboys through the decline of the golden age of the cowboy, near the end of the 19th Century. Almost the whole of the first half of the movie, there is no plot to speak of, just character exposition building up the picture of the life and character that these men had. Nothing is rushed, and yet it is never dull, thanks to an intelligent script. There are humorous moments and great lines, but plenty of pathos and melancholy too, as the characters all deal with the end of an era in their own ways. We see the cowboy-turned-outlaw, the cowboy-turned-storekeeper, the cowboy-turned-floor sweeper... but most of all we see the cowboy turned into legend. As the plot kicks in, there is nothing contrived about it, but it all feeds into the central idea of examining what men do when their purpose is taken away from them.
The movie benefits from some great performances from some classic character actors such as William Devane and Barry Corbin, as well as a brilliant star turn from Tom Selleck who has never been better. It also benefits from the stunning scenery - ironically not in Wyoming as the movie suggests, but shot in Canada. The sweeping vistas, free of any trace of civilization, set against a backdrop of the Rockies, are stunning and superbly photographed.
What pulls this above it's TV-movie-of-the-week origins is the sincerity poured into it by all concerned, and not least by the prolific director Simon Wincer (Lonesome Dove, Quigley Down Under... and Crocodile Dundee in Los Angeles! ) and executive producer Tom Selleck. This fills the movie with those little, almost subliminal moments which make it feel real.
The result is no classic big screen film, but a perfectly judged and understated homage to a bygone era. It leaves us with the notion, that though the golden age is over, there will always be real cowboys.

Can't be a cowboy forever.......2007-01-10

In this classic style western, the main character is faced with a changing world that seems to be intruding on the life he has chosen to live. Despite the innevitable - that he will one day succumb to progress - the story follows him on through life but never seems to resolve the assertion by another character that you cannot be a cowboy forever. It seemed to be just a pleasent story of one who fights progress but never resolves an answer for himself. Still, the scenery is beautiful and Mr. Selleck does a fine job as the quintessential cowboy as usual.

Know how Monte Felt.......2006-12-18

As another man said, the plot has been explained by others pretty thoroughly, and as I went through these reviews a gentleman from Nevada put a different spin on his particular review; as a third generation cowboy he used this film to teach a city boy why he his the way he his. I didn't do that. Well, sorta.
I am a fourth generation rancher and cowhunter in Florida (used to be a top five beeve cattle state) and will be the last. Not because I lack children, but rather because in less than two decades my county has turned form ranchland to suburbs and native Crackers and cowhunters such as myself have become a small and declining minority in our own land. I have become Monte Walsh, as has just about everyone I grew up with.

I caught this film on TNT and actually welled up a little. When it came out I snatched it up and took it down to the local drinking hole on "John Wayne Night" (we watch a Western and toast the Duke) and convinced the bartender to put it on. She's a sucker for Selleck. I had also invited a batch of my Snowbird (PC for Yankees) pals to sit in. When the movie was over the place was real quiet, then a old timer stood up and said "A toast to all us fence riders!" It was a dang good toast. It was kinda quiet for the rest of the night, but everyone congratulated the choice; it summed us all up. We may be dying out, a bit bitter about it, but by God we'll go out with dignity. As for my Northern pal's reactions, well as the Nevadan's boss said: "Now I get it."

Selleck's third TNT Western is a poignant goodbye to the cowboy way of life.......2006-11-04

This 2003 remake of "Monte Walsh" was Tom Selleck's third (but hopefully not last) Western for TNT, and it is probably the most stirring film tribute to the end of the Old West and the cowboy way of life. This is saying quite a bit as some fine Westerns like "The Wild Bunch", "The Shootist", and (even more recently) "Open Range" as well as other movies have dealt with the changes resulting from progress as the U.S. was about to enter the twentieth century.

Other reviewers have covered the plot line in great detail already, so I won't retread that ground. Suffice it to say that, while Selleck's Monte Walsh is the hero of the picture, he is portrayed with character flaws intact as well. Montelius Walsh loves three things in life: horses, women, and drinking (and the order of these things changes at different times in his life). He is stubborn, afraid to commit to Martine (his favorite prostitute whom he does seem to love), and refuses to change. He is also hard-working and loyal to his friends, especially his best buddy Chet (played by Keith Carradine), and these qualities are what make his character heroic and the storyline affecting.

I'm convinced that if Selleck had starred primarily in Westerns throughout his film career, then his movie success would have dwarfed his "Magnum P.I." role. The TNT Westerns, along with his three previous Westerns dating back to 1979's "The Sacketts", establish him as a premier cowboy actor. "Monte Walsh" is the finest of those efforts to date, and it is to be hoped that Selleck will 'saddle up' again soon; perhaps he'll even reunite with Sam Elliott with whom he starred in his first two made-for-TV Westerns and who has also made some first-rate Westerns for TNT.

Watch this one. It's an elegiac tribute to the passing of the Old West and the American cowboy. May both continue to live on in films!

Better than your average sequel, Shanghai Knights almost defies the law of diminishing returns. Lacking the freshness of Shanghai Noon, it compensates with a looser, disposable plot that plays to the strengths of costars Jackie Chan and Owen Wilson. It's 1887, and odd-couple heroes Chon Wang (Chan) and Roy O'Bannon (Wilson) are in London to retrieve the Imperial Seal of China, stolen by an English lord (Aidan Gillen) who killed Wang's father in his quest for the British throne. Wang's lithe and lovely sister (Fann Wong) joins the battle with high-kicking force, appealing to Roy's roguish charm and surfer-dude anachronisms. While Chan continues his transition to safer stunts and good-natured homage to Buster Keaton, Gene Kelly, and other Hollywood legends, Wilson indulges the party vibe to good effect, maintaining the anything-goes approach that allows silly encounters with Jack the Ripper, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, and a Dickensian urchin named Charlie Chaplin. Rush hour meet the western.......2007-02-11

The heroic storey Chon Wang continues in Shanghai Knights the hilarious sequel to the successful Shanghai Noon. In this storey it has been a couple of years since Jackie Chain and Owen Wilson last rip roaring adventure. As the story starts of Jackie father who has protected the emperor's seal for over ten generations is brutal murder in Shanghai. Getting word from his sister Lin Jackie goes to New York to reunite with his old sidekick Roy "O' Bannon, played by Owen Wilson. Together with the aid of his sister line they must track down there killer. Which pulls them into a despicable plane set by the evil son of the former emperor and a selfish English prince to take the position of the royal throne on as the emperor of china and the other as the king of London will there dastardly plan to wipe out the rest of the royal family go through find out in the action packed conclusion. A word of warming due to several scenes in this movie with heavy Konfu action sequences and several brief scenes with heavy sexual content I do not recommend this two any one under thirteen. If you are 13 to16 years of age or older this movie should be fine for you.

Another uninspired sequel.......2006-11-10

Chon Wang (Jackie Chan) and Roy O'Bannon (Luke Wilson) reunite to recover the Imperial Seal of China and avenge the death of Chon's father, the Keeper of the Seal. They are joined by Chon's sister, the beautiful and equally dangerous Lin (Fann Wong). The chemistry of Wilson and Chan is as delightful as ever, but that (and the beautiful and talented Wong) is about the only reason to watch this tired comedy. Even the action scenes are uninspired. A disappointment.

When it comes down to naming the best Western of all time, the list usually narrows to three completely different pictures: John Ford's The Searchers, Howard Hawks's Red River, and Hawks's Rio Bravo. About the only thing they all have in common is that they all star John Wayne. But while The Searchers is an epic quest for revenge and Red River is a sweeping cattle-drive drama ("Take 'em to Missouri! Yeeee-hah!"), Rio Bravo is on a much more modest scale. Basically, it comes down to Sheriff John T. Chance (Wayne), his sobering-up alcoholic friend Dude (Dean Martin), the hotshot new kid Colorado (Ricky Nelson), and deputy-sidekick Stumpy (Walter Brennan), sittin' around in the town jail, drinkin' black cofee, shootin' the breeze, and occasionally, singin' a song. Hawks--who, like his pal Ernest Hemingway, lived by the code of "grace under pressure"--said he made Rio Bravo as a rebuke to High Noon, in which sheriff Gary Cooper begged for townspeople to help him. So, Hawks made Wayne's Sheriff Chance a consummate professional--he may be getting old and fat, but he knows how to do his job, and he doesn't want amateurs getting mixed up in his business; they could get hurt. This most entertaining of movies also achieved some notoriety in the '90s when Quentin Tarantino (director of Pulp Fiction, Reservoir Dogs, and Jackie Brown) revealed that he uses it as a litmus test for prospective girlfriends. Oh, and if the configuration of characters sounds familiar, it should: Hawks remade Rio Bravo two more times--as El Dorado in 1967, with Wayne, Robert Mitchum, and James Caan; and as Rio Lobo in 1970, with Wayne, Jack Elam, and Christopher Mitchum. --Jim Emerson

Slam-bang , exiciting, funny . One of the all-time great Westerns . On one side is an army of gunmen dead-set on springing a mordeous sidekick from jail . On the other is the Sheriff John T. Change and his deputies: one a drunk , the other a cripple . Place your bets . John Wayne (Chance) 1907-1979 in RIO BRAVO , a lean Western classic packing solid heroism and a strong emotional core . He's joined by Dean Martin (1917-1995) as it the deputy coming off a two-year drunk , Walter Brennan (1894-1974) as the old coot whose spirit outmatches his hobbled stride. Ricky Nelson (1940-1985) as a youth out of place himself and Angie Dickinson (1931 - ) as a scarlet woman with one eye on Chance . Directed Howard Hawks (1896-1977) lifted the Western to new Hights with RED RIVER (1948). Capturing the Legendary West with a stellar cast in peak form , he does it again here . GREAT MOVIE.......2007-08-12

A famous western that fully deserves it's status as one of the genre's greatest, 'Rio Bravo' is a laconic classic. The plot is simple, the pace is relaxed but there's real movie magic at work here, with a superb cast under Howard Hawks' assured direction. Front and centre is the effortless charisma of John Wayne, he's commanding, funny and even vunerable as the iconic Sheriff John T. Chance. Dean Martin is terrific as Dude, the drunken deputy trying to sober up, he's so underrated as an actor and performs marvellously here. And who can forget Walter Brennan as Stumpy? Add music sensation of the day Ricky Nelson, then watch these men sit round the jail bonding, arguing and even singing a song. The chemistry is amazing, full of humour and wonderful warmth. And Angie Dickinson is absolutely luscious as the Duke's fiesty love interest. So here's a great ol' fashioned classic that has it all. A must see for any movie buff.

Rio Dorado, or I mean Bravo!.......2007-07-26

This is classic John Wayne and Howard Hawks. If you love John Wayne movies you'll love this one. Now personally I enjoyed El Dorado better than this one and sure they are basically the same movie, but they are different enough that you can watch them both and enjoy them for different reasons.

In Rio Bravo, unlike El dorado, Wayne is the sheriff and he is definitely the law. This is a powerful man that knows his job. Dean Martin is his drunken deputy, Dude, who fell apart over a woman we never meet. Part of the fun and drama of this movie is Martin becoming the man he used to be while he and Wayne keep guard over the murderous Joe Burdette played by a smug Claude Akins, while dodging bullets and threats from Nathan Burdette (Joe's wiser brother) played by John Russell.

Along for laughs (and there's plenty) are Walter Brennan playing the old crippled jail hand Stumpy and Pedro Gonzalez Gonzalez as the hotel owner. Of course there's the love interest for Wayne as well, and although done ok, it really isn't the reason to keep watching this movie over and over again.

Rio Bravo isn't Wayne's best movie, but it is one of my favorites and one I can continue to watch year after year.

Still cut by Warner ?.......2007-07-16

I have european and american prior releases. Cut. First the full image that I have on VHS from TV, is cut on dvds by two bars top and bottom to get a 1:85 image ratio, as Warner says "as shown first in theaters". But since, Warner, Tv offered the full image version for all those who missed the initial release !, and you seem to ignore that remote control allows dvd player or large screen tv to enlarge the image for those who chose it. Still planning to gain money one day releasing the "full image" version, uh ? (as for the Hammer films)
Second, I saw the movie in the 50s in Paris, and at origin, and still in mid-70s in Paris in the original subtitled version in theaters (full screen), because Walter Brennan asks him to keep his promise, Dean Martin washes himself in a bucket in the prison with the others around. It is WHY he changes his dirty clothes for clean ones, BEFORE he announces going to the hotel for a bath (to finish details of course).
