5 out of 5 stars Awesome film... but a HORRIBLE American DVD release.......2007-08-13

Death Wish II (1981.) The second film in the Death Wish series.

INTRODUCTION:
In 1974, the widely-loved (and widely controverisal) Death Wish, starring Charles Bronson, arrived in theatres. The film got a mixed reaction from moviegoers and critics alike. Seven years later, the sequel arrived. Is it a pathetic rehash of the original, or something fresh?

OVERVIEW:
Death Wish was released in 1981. The film stars Charles Bronson and co-stars Jill Ireland, Lawrence Fishburne, and Vincent Gardenia. Michael Winner directed it.

BASIC PLOT:
Paul Kersey can't catch a break. First his wife was murdered and his daugher became mentally ill due to the conflict. Now, in his new home on the west coast, tragedy strikes again. Following Kersey standing up for himself, the would-be robbers rape and murder his housekeeper and ultimately lead to the death of his daughter. Distraught from recent events, Paul rents an apartment on the bad side of town, and vows to hunt down and kill the murderers, one by one - while at the same time trying to hide his vigilantism from his wife. And when police discover a vigilante has taken to the streets, they call in a cop from Paul's old hometown, to see if Paul is up to his old tricks.

FILM OPINIONS:
Another excellent film in a classic series. It's clear from the get go this is film, though it retains a lot of elements from the first, is a different film. In the original, Paul took to the streets to make them safe again, with no leads and no target to go after. This time Paul knows exactly who he is looking for, and sets his sights on these particular targets. Unlike the first film this one is NOT based on a novel, and that's a good thing (the novel that inspired the original Death Wish paled in comparison to its film counterpart.) Definitely more of a sleaze factor at work here, and less to provoke your thoughts, but still excellent. Easily the best of the sequels.

DVD:
The Death Wish films got screwed for their DVD releases. Not only are all the films cropped and fullscreen, but most of them feature scenes that have been EDITED. This is most noticable in the rape scenes in the first and second film. For the first two films, import the Region 4 DVD that combines the first two films. For 3 and 4, import the Region 2 European DVDs. Or if you can find it, get the import Vigilante Collection that has all five films in widescreen. Just be sure you have a multi-region player first!

OVERALL:
Say what you will about this film, I love it. And I'm sure plenty of others will back me up. If you want to see Charles Bronson at his finest, look no further than the Death Wish series. With plenty of character development, action, and drama alike, there's plenty to please here.

4 out of 5 stars Good remake.......2007-07-28

Plenty of people here have summarized what the film is about, so I won't. I'll try to add something original to the mix, so forgive me if I don't confine myself to describing the film's plot. The popularity of this film cannot be explained without a wider understanding of cultural conditions and sentiments at the time of its release. Death Wish was a bombshell, as it gave voice to how hundreds of thousands of people were feeling, sentiments people felt and may not have publicly expressed for fear of backlash from the PC movement. In a few sentences, the cultural circumstance referred to was a growing discontent with what was growingly considered to be misguided attempts to solve society's "problems." In the sixties the government gave itself the responsibility to "fix" many problems, from teenage pregnancy to poverty to drug use to discrimination to crime, with social "programs," judicial activism and new legislation. Ironically, ALL of these problems were already rapidly decreasing in the early sixties. Crime was HALF what it was in 1930, even if you don't control for the increase in the population!! Poverty was lessening each and every year. What happened after the social programs of the late sixties and the generation of the welfare state? Well, the crime rate literally exploded. So did teenage pregnancy. Poverty quadrupled. Another thing that happened was the rewriting of law to lessen the punishment of criminals to the result that even the criminals that were arrested and successfully prosecuted often ended right back out on the street in a matter of months to commit even more crimes. People were sick and tired of this crap. Some filmmakers new it, and tapped into this sentiment with wildly popular films like Death Wish, The Stone Killer, and Dirty Harry. An entire genre of "vendetta/revenge/let's take out the human garbage" films was born, and Charles Bronson, after Death Wish, was for a decade the most popular actor in the world. Cinematically Death Wish is an amazing, spellbinding film. Bronson's presence is undeniable. The seventies threw up some wonderfully gritty films drenched in utter realism, and the Death Wish films are some of the greatest of all time. Though good, Death Wish 2 is more so a remake than a sequel.

3 out of 5 stars A violent but realistic thriller.......2007-07-16

I have been familiar with death wish to since its original release on HBO. However, I don't like any movie that has important scenes deleted and in this case quite a bit of the violent sexual content was removed. Other than that the movie was fine. If you're Bronson fan you'll like this movie. If you dislike violent criminals you'll love this movie.

1 out of 5 stars Sleazy and scuzzy .................2007-02-15

As with most great movies, sequelidas has to follow and the original classic , Death Wish was not spared from this. Number two followed eight years later.
Th gang rape scene has to be one of the most gratuitous and unpleasant moments in movie history. I know rape is not supposed to be a pleasurable experience, but was it really necessary to have it as long as it was? I dont know about anyone else, but I was squirming thorugh this. The rape scene from the first movie was brutal too, but it only lasted a few minutes and was used effectivley in conveying that senseless crime . This scene from Death Wish 2 seems to convey director Michael Winner`s sick fantasies.
Ironically, the actress who played Bronson`s gang -raped maid gives the best peformance of the entire movie. The late Bronson, his wife Jill Ireland(never one of the better actresses in history), and surprisingly, Vincent Gardenia ,turn in weak, ineffective performances. Bronson`s peformance is statuesque and I dont mean on a grand scale..He demonstrates the emotions and range of a statue.
This is poorly directed, cheap and grainy film making if you can call it film making. After the brutalization and murders of his daughter and maid, Bronson embarks on a dreary chase for the thugs in which he surprisingly remembers all their faces from two brief encounters. Predictable results follow, obviously, since there were three more sequels on the way.

3 out of 5 stars Graphic.......2006-11-28

I have to agree with the highlighted review above. This film is very disturbingly graphic in the depiction of the group rape scene. I do have to doubt the validity of that whole scene being there in the first place. It is definitely not for under 18 viewers, and in some cases, not for those weak at heart/ emotions.

That being said, overall , it follows as a decent sequel to Death Wish 1. Not a buy, but you can rent it out on a Saturday night when your bored and definitely *NOT* with your loved one or family..

Part 1: In this explosive story of revenge and urban violence, Charles Bronson plays Paul Kersey, a bleeding-heart liberal who has a change of opinion after his wife and daughter are violently attacked by a gang of thugs in their apartment. His daughter is raped, his wife raped and murdered. Bronson then turns vigilante as he stalks the mean streets of New York on the prowl for muggers, hoodlums and the like. A violent, controversial film which is frank and original in its treatment of urban crime and the average citizen's helplessness in dealing with it. ~~~~~~~ Part 2: Charles Bronson returns with a vengeance in this sequel to the popular crime thriller DEATH WISH. Bronson reprises his role as vigilante Paul Kersey, whose family is once again victimized after moving to Los Angeles from New York. Kersey is mugged by a gang of street punks who later break into his home and brutally assault his maid and daughter, resulting in their deaths. ~~~~~~~ Part 3: Paul Kersey has moved from LA to New York City to escape the crime and begin anew. But after an dear friend is murdered, the architect-turned-vigilante begins to deliver his own inimitable kind of street justice. The rugged Mr. Bronson is back again as Paul Kersey, the Korean War vet who loves to lure street thugs to surprise endings. ~~~~~~~ Part 4: When his girlfriend's daughter overdoses on toxic "crack," vigilante Paul Kersey explodes into action in an all-out war to exterminate the cocaine network in L.A. ~~~~~~~ Part 5: Aging ex-vigilante Paul Kersey has made a quiet life for himself: he's now a teacher, and engaged to a lovely woman, Olivia. 5 out of 5 stars I'm very surprised by everyone's reaction to this movie.. i thought it was great..........2006-11-26

Perhaps it's because I feel that I can relate to the guy, but I thought it was actually quite humourous. The guy seemed pretty real, cynical, and tired of living a boring lonely life. I loved it...

1 out of 5 stars How bad can a movie be?.......2005-09-13

Wow. It's rare I consider a movie absolutely horrendous, but this one qualifies. We are given absolutely no reason whatsoever to care for this guy, and halfway through this tedious excuse for a movie, I found myself yelling "DIE already". When he doesn't kill himself in the end, all I wanted to do was shove him face down in the ocean and drown him. A dumb stupid awful "indie" movie that is a waste of film, time and effort.

1 out of 5 stars I wanted to kill myself!.......2005-01-03

We must have reached the End of Days. Our civilization as we know it is over when films like these get made. What can I say, this home video is so amateurish it should not have ever found its way into my video store. Because the premise sounded promising and the cast was decent, I gave this title a try. Mistake! BIG MISTAKE! The film is a random compilation of pointless scenes, dwelling on the melodramatic life of Paul Rudd, who because he failed as an actor, wants to kill himself. Yet I am never given any believable insight into his soul nor do I care about his failure. This is some of the whiniest filmmaking I have ever seen. Who ever made this film is trying too hard to be heard, although apparently has very little to say!

1 out of 5 stars Sean Mcginly Fan disapointed.......2004-12-09

im a huge fan of writer Sean Mcginly, his classics include Venomous starring Treat williams and Sonic Impact with Ice-T. Mcginly's films are the topic of discussion at film schools all across the world, he is a renowned talent and i have to say that i was appalled when i saw his latest film Two Days. i think he should stick to writing as the film was virtually without direction and the cast (which included hacks like Paul Rudd) was not in the same league as superstars Traci Bingham and Ice-T who have graced some of his previous work. Please Sean, stick to doing what you know best and stay away from the intellectual stuff, leave that to idiots like Capra, Wenders, Scorcese etc. They are not in your league.

    1 out of 5 stars garbage.......2004-12-08

I think producer Mo Ramchandani should be commended for his integrity in honestly reviewing his own film. This is rare in an industry that is proliferated with bald old men who are more interested in turning a profit than producing a good film. This was by far the worst film i have ever seen, i urge anybody on this page not to waste their time. Director Sean Mcginly should have been fired on the first day of shooting and replaced with anyone, even a farm animal, and then maybe the psycholgical complexities of suicide would have been better explored. I look forward to more from producer Mo Ramchandani, its clear he's not going to make teh smae mistake twice!!!!!
